Deposits of metals in only slightly disturbed strata have been attributed to sedimentation processes contemporary with deposition of the strata. Recently this origin has been extended' to a greater variety' of deposits and local enrichment has been attributed to selective remobilization of metallic minerals in the host stratum. Effects attending metallization and deformation, and exact age' of the metallization are compiled to establish the sequence of events in ore deposit histories in order to clarify importance of remobilization within a formation relative to introduction from an outside source into an fav¬orable host. The pertinence respectively of deposit; origin and geometry to the work of the mining geologist is reviewed. Dwarf faunas in the Clinton iron ore, Tully pyrite bed and Rammelsberg deposit, indicate abnormal metal ions in the sedimentary environment. Slight¬ly disturbed strata are host rocks in the Swedish Kolm, Timna, Kupferschieffer, and White Pine deposit; the latter two have ore only in conjunction with tectonic structures.

Land surface deformation can be caused by underground mining activities. The maximum subsidence normally occurs directly above the location of the excavation of the coal seam. In the case where the longwall mining technique is applied, the magnitude and shape of the subsidence bowl are constrained by the longwall structure (pillar). This paper describes the use of satellite radar interferometry for monitoring surface subsidence due to underground mining, as a cost-effective geodetic technique and complementary to conventional ground surveying techniques. This paper uses data acquired by the current generation of SAR satellites û the European ENVISAT and the Japanese ALOS û to monitor ground subsidence in the southern highland coalfield in New South Wales, Australia. An accumulated DInSAR subsidence mine map is produced using six successive ALOS acquisitions. The results are post-analysed with the aid of geographic information systems (GIS) and validated using ground survey data.

"The INCO SO2/air process was patented by INCO in 1985 (Borbely, Devuyst, Ettel, Mosoiu & Schitka, 1985). Well over 80 mining operations worldwide are using this process to oxidize cyanides to cyanates in the tailings from gold, silver and copper mining operations. Though it is possible to supply sulphur dioxide (SO2) in either gas or liquid form, the majority of these SO2/air operations use sulphite-based salts as the ‘SO2’ equivalent reducing agent. This is probably due to the lower capital cost, safety concerns with, and availability of liquid SO2. Sodium metabisulphite (SMBS) is commonly employed, and its cost is an order of magnitude higher than that of sulphur. The increased capital expenditures (CAPEX) for a sulphur-burning SO2 gas plant could have a pay-back of less than two years. In addition, a SO2 gas plant offers potential for significant heat recovery from the sulphur burning process. In terms of safety, the SO2 gas plant only requires the storage of relatively benign sulphur and the site inventory of SO2 will be limited to the plant gas inventory. Furthermore, a SO2 gas plant will not trigger the US Clean Air Act Section 112(r) accident prevention regulations, as may be the case for liquid SO2.Most existing mining operations using ‘SO2’ are gold operations, but in recent years there has been an increased interest in larger sulphur dioxide gas plants for hydrometallurgical facilities that employ leaching of cobalt/manganese minerals or precipitation of manganese/iron (e.g. Tenke Fungurume and Boleo).This paper discusses the different processes which require SO2 as a reducing agent and compares the capital and operational costs of a SO2 gas plant to conventional process alternatives using sulphite-based salts or liquid SO2.The heart of the SO2 gas plant is the sulphur furnace. The most economical way to produce SO2 is by combustion of sulphur in air producing up to 19.5 vol% SO2. Examples of large and small sulphur furnaces are discussed in terms of design, operation, and impacts on operational costs.The SO2 gas produced in a sulphur-burning plant has to be contacted with the liquor to be reduced. The choice of gas-liquid contacting device is important, and two contacting devices are discussed: 1) Gas sparging into the bottom of leach tanks (high, nearly constant, back pressure due to liquid head) and 2) absorption columns (low gas-side pressure drop)."

"What is new in air compressors? A good deal - the designers have been keeping pace with technical developments in related fields and also contributing new techniques of their own. Plant reliability no longer requires bulky slow-speed machines. Even the reciprocating machines, which still provide the most efficient method of compressing air, have been greatly reduced in size and installation cost for a given capacity rating. New materials and fabrication techniques are being used, by most manufacturers, to produce less costly plants in total. Many packaged plants are available, which generally means a more complete assembly for shipment. This type of construction offers savings in handling and erection costs at the site. A warning is in order, however - the extent of packaging in any given plant should be investigated carefully to determine what is included and just what field costs can be realized. A suggested specification has been offered for consideration when studying comparative costs. Rotating machines intrigue many because of their potential as regard fewer wearing parts, higher speeds and hence smaller units, utilizing less expensive drivers, and lack of contamination of the compressed air by lubricants. The inherent shortcomings of these machines - lower •efficiency and capacity control - have been much improved lately, and this type of plant is now becoming quite popular. Noise control, of much concern to everyone, is another development that has received considerable attention.Systems for efficient capacity control and continuous monitoring of compressor operation offer additional reliability and low-cost operation of the modern compressed air plant. Accessory equipment and its effect on over-all plant operation is also considered."

This paper discusses the temporary support design methodology for the largest road caverns ever built in Australia—the Lutwyche Caverns—part of the Airport Link project in Brisbane, Australia. The Lutwyche Caverns with a maximum excavated span of 27 m form a key component of this major road project, allowing on and off ramps merging with the underground highway. In addition to the two large span caverns, a 15 m soft ground tunnel with 5 m cover above the caverns and two 24 m deep burial chambers for the 12.4 m tunnel boring machines (TBMs) had to be built in record time at Lutwyche.The temporary support design methodology involved the use of a range of analytical approaches, including empirical methods to provide a starting point for design development, key block models to determine the potential influence of discontinuities on excavation stability and 2/3D continuum and discontinuum models to determine the potential influence of adjacent excavations and the proposed construction staging on the design. In addition, probabilistic analysis of potential kinematic instability using a discrete fracture network (DFN) approach was also undertaken to establish the critical block loads for the temporary lining, while the continuum and discontinuum models were used to design the support for the 1.5 m diameter rock pillar at the north end of the northbound cavern.The numerical modelling was undertaken in close conjunction with the contractor to develop the optimal construction sequence, considering the available construction equipment on-site and the overall project program requirements. UNUSUAL interest has recently centered in the Mojave mining district of California, owing to new discoveries of gold ore at the Silver Queen mine, and subsequently at other neighboring proper- ties. These finds have proved that opportunities exist for the prospector even in old mining districts, where careful search may still be rewarded. The Mojave district is characterized by a group of small hills centering around Soledad Butte, four to six miles southwest of Mojave, in Kern County. This butte is 1250 ft. higher than the surrounding desert and 4000 ft. above sea level. Four miles west of Soledad Mountain are the so-called Middle Buttes, a group of flat-topped hills. "The Eglinton-Crosstown Light Rail Transit line is a 19-kilometre corridor with a 10-kilometre underground portion currently being constructed by Metrolinx in Toronto through a densely populated urban environment. Tunneling works are being completed through two separate design-bid-build contracts that include consideration for a phased handover to a follow on contractor who will take ownership of the tunnels, including warranties, and will complete the stations and remainder of the system through a PPP delivery model including maintenance of the system for 30 years. Warranty provisions, settlement apportionment, tunnel leakage, potential delays and conflicts between contractors are just some of the risks the team managing tunnel contract integration had to consider when developing the PPP contract. This paper will present an overview of how these risks were assessed and allocated through the contracts and the strategies adopted to minimize risks to Metrolinx while ensuring successful procurement was maintained. INTRODUCTION The Big Move is a 25 year, $50 billion ($-CAD) plan for coordinated and integrated transportation in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA) in Ontario, Canada. This plan has been initiated by Metrolinx, a division of the provincial government of Ontario, and its vision, goals and objectives are rooted in creating a high quality of life; a thriving, sustainable and protected environment; and a strong, prosperous and competitive economy for the GTHA. The Big Move will triple the length of rapid transit service in the GTHA to 1,725km, significantly increase the percentage of the GTHA population living within two kilometers of rapid transit, reduce commute times to an average of 77 minutes per person per day and decrease greenhouse gas emissions from passenger transportation per person by 29%. Work is currently underway on several projects and more than $16 billion ($-CAD) of the planned investment has already been committed. A key project that forms part of this commitment is the Eglinton Crosstown Light Rail Transit (LRT) Project which is being delivered in the City of Toronto under Metrolinx’s Rapid Transit (RT) Program. This complex and sizeable undertaking has been broken into a number of separate contracts comprising: LRT Vehicles contract; Eglinton West Tunnels Project; Eglinton East Tunnels Project; and a Public-Private-Partnership (PPP) contract to complete the underground stations, at-grade stops, all rail infrastructure and systems and to maintain the entire system for 30 years. The PPP contract, which includes an initial capital portion of approx. $5.1 billion ($-CAD), has recently been awarded to Crosslinx Transit Solutions, a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) consortium comprised of SNC Lavalin, Aecon, Dragados and EllisDon."

A program, to demonstrate this technology is described.

It is well known that horizontal current density in the metal pad contributes greatly to the generation of MHD driven bath-metal interface wave. It is possible to compute very accurately the metal pad current density using a very detailed finite element model [1], but a MHD model must be compatible to this level of mesh refinement and to recalculate the current distribution at each time step, including the full busbar supply system. The accuracy of the instability prediction of the cell depends on the accuracy of the metal pad current density calculation. This study presents the comparison of the metal pad current density calculation of the detailed finite element model and the MHD-Valdis model for different metal pad heights and ledge thickness. It also presents the corresponding cell MHD stability predictions.

Commonly the most frequent method of calculating the overall mass balance of a multi mineral platinum-group metal (PGM) concentrator circuit in Southern Africa has been through the use of spreadsheets, typically Microsoft EXCEL®. While there are some advantages in using spreadsheet based mass balances during the conceptual design phase of the project, their use becomes limited in the detailed design phase of the project. This paper discusses the successful application of METSIM® for mass balancing of a PGM concentrator and highlights the benefits gained during the conceptual and design phase of the project.

Erosion corrosion is acceleration in the rate of corrosion attack in metal due to the relative motion of a corrosive fluid and a metal surface [1]. The increased turbulence caused by pitting on the internal surfaces of a tube can result in rapidly increasing erosion rates and eventually a leak [2]. Engineers and scientists in different disciplines have worked for many years on methods of complete protection from flow induced corrosion or partially reducing corrosion of this type, and they have proposed or applied different countermeasures [2]. The accident at the Surry-2 nuclear power plant (USA) and other similar incidents have once again disturbed the scientific-technical community. This has forced the plant operating personnel and the management to undertake wide-ranging measures in order to discover on time, assess, and monitor such cases. In these extreme cases, protective coating and even metallic bulk material coating (the substrate itself) may suffer considerably from mechanically induced damage [2]. At high velocities, the "leaching out" dissolution reaction of particular, for example, steel elements at the solid-liquid interface become the rate determining step. One practical example for the difference between erosion corrosion and flow induced corrosion is the famous steam eruption from a Japanese [3, 4] nuclear power plant cooling system at the pressurized water reactor (PWR), turbine and in the condenser-steam generator connecting pipe. The rupture occurred in the carbon steel pipe connecting the condenser and steam generator. The damage occurred in the easily eroded/corroded carbon steel at a vulnerable location downstream of an orifice plate, In general, when there is significant reduction in pipe thickness through erosion/corrosion, distinctive patterns are visible, but those patterns were not observed in this case, Thus one can speculate that another phenomenon is possibly controlling, Fluid flow within pipes reduces the pipe thickness leading to an eventual rupture, The thickness reduction mechanism is erosion/corrosion, One example is "cavitations corrosion", Erosion and corrosion occur at the same time, and it is difficult to determine which one is dominant, Therefore, the term, "erosion/corrosion," is used [5]. In the atomic energy field, the terms "Flow Accelerated Corrosion" and "Flow Induced Corrosion" are also used. It is the purpose here to show that during flow induced corrosion a different mechanism may possibly be operating and in some cases it can be different from the well known erosion corrosion. Another example is fretting failures in early Canadian nuclear steam generators which was thought to be due to excessive vibration caused by high.

Direct relationships between rock texture and BWi (grindability index) have been established based on geological and metallurgical information supported by optical microscopy observations, gathered from 731 samples.Each recognised rock texture is observed to be related to a certain BWi range and, this texture is also characteristic of distinct lithological subunits (recognisable at mapping scale). Therefore, this relationship may provide an important tool for early milling in situ estimation.Since each textural type is a response to rock formation conditions, the causality of the relationship between BWi and texture is based on such conditions and, particularly, on the interfacial free energy among its components.According to the abovementioned textural features, the greater the free interfacial energy between mineral components, the greater the necessary energy required to break its grain boundaries and, consequently, the greater the necessary energy required for milling.If the textural evidence indicates that the rock was able to adjust the shape and/or size of its components – in a natural tendency of all systems to minimise energy– then the necessary energy required to break its grain boundaries will be lower.

The Meikle Mine is a high-grade, underground gold mine that utilizes a primary and secondary stoping method with delayed backfill. The newly developed Rodeo Mine will start production using similar mining methods in late 2001. The combined production for the mines will be 4100 stpd of ore in 2002. Dilution of the secondary stopes resulting from blast induced overbreak of the backfill placed in the primary stopes was an issue identified as being a major contributor to the total mining cost at the Meikle Mine. To address the overbreak issue, a low-density, polystyrene enhanced bulk emulsion was developed and introduced to the mine. The density and energy of the emulsion was varied until an optimal level was reached. The use of a low-density bulk emulsion has greatly reduced the overbreak of the primary stope backfill when blasting the secondary stopes. Benefits to the mines include reduced secondary stope dilution, lowered total mining cost, and increased revenues.1

Selenium-rich metallurgical waste, also known commercially as “crude selenium,” is a byproduct of the copper (Cu) refining process. This by-product, contains ~ 90% selenium (Se), precious metals, platinum group metals (PGMs), and other critical elements. This study investigated the leaching efficiency of Se from the sludge under alkaline conditions using different oxidizing agents to enrich PGMs and precious metals in the leach solid residue. The effectiveness of each oxidizing agent during leaching was assessed and compared. Additionally, Eh-pH diagram for Se was established under specific experimental conditions and utilized to inform process optimization. Key variables, including leaching time, temperature, and oxidant concentration, were evaluated for their impact on the efficiency and the selectivity of the oxidative alkaline leaching process.

A preliminary study was conducted by the Bureau of Mines to determine the effect of humidity on salt mine airborne dust levels. Results showed less dust where the humidity was elevated. Dust reductions appeared to be dependent on the equilibrium between humidity and salt.
