WHEN so many statements are being made relative to the requirements of zinc metal, it is difficult for some of us who are acquainted with the industry to visualize how it is possible to step up production so as to supply some of the fantastic requirement figures that are published from time to time. I shall attempt to approach this subject from the standpoint of existing conditions which affect production, also keeping in mind the price ceiling under which the industry operates. Total production of primary and secondary zinc in the United States for 1941 will be about 878,000 tons, to which should be added about 36,000 tons of Mexican slab zinc available for consumption or export from the United States, giving a total available of 914,000 tons. Production of slab zinc of all grades in 1942 should be 953,000 tons. Adding the available Mexican supply should bring the total to 989,000 tons.

The element probably constitutes much less than one-millionth part of the earth's crust , but the potential supply - to no small extent as a by-product of the production of lead and copper with which it is associated in nature has tended for many decades to exceed the demand. A single mine in Bolivia could readily flood the world's markets , and considerable quantities of bismuth are allowed to escape recovery at many smelting plants .

Telerobotics focused on mining is currently being introduced into production systems around the world. Mining companies in Canada, Sweden, South Africa and Australia have tended to lead the international charge to this form of technology for mining. While this introduction is taking place a few basic questions have yet to be answered. How many machines can a single operator run? How many types of machines can a single operator run? A new Canadian Research Chair in Robotics and Mine Automation has been established at Laurentian University. This chair will investigate these questions and many more through a series of experiments in a newly established telerobotics laboratory that connects Laurentian teleoperation workstations to model mining machines at Cambrian college?s eDome. The laboratory will support many experiments allowing researchers to physically run multiple robot scenarios differing the numbers and types of machines at one/quarter scale. Further experiments are being designed to investigate the potential for managing time delays in telerobotics. This paper describes the laboratory, experiments and some preliminary results.

IN reviewing the field of mineral industry education last year reference was made to recent assertions, mostly emanating from sources not in a position to know the facts, that mining engineers as a class are disappearing. Attention might also then have been called to a statement that appeared in Engineering News, August 11, 1892 (p. 130), ". . . the great absolute decline in number of mining graduates, which last amounts almost to a complete abandonment of mining engineering as a distinct branch of study." With the development of industrial processes and the consequent emergence of numerous products that quickly become necessities, industrial activity has acquired an essential character today. Although its importance is unquestionable, industrial activity is responsible for generating quite a large number of residues, with different shapes and characteristics. It has been observed, in particular the grits (Kraft process in the cellulose industry) and the residue from the processing of granite. And, given the importance of Portland cement as a building material, its vast employment and waste properties that resemble components of the clinker, it was decided to produce cementitious compounds from these industrial wastes. The residues were subjected to mineralogical, chemical, physical and morphological. And, the mixing ratio between the residues in the 70% and 30% grits residue granite was sintered at 1250 ° C furnaces to burn threshold of 6 hours forming new compounds observing tri-calcium aluminate and di-calcium silicate that are compounds found in portland cement.

"Magnetic surveys made by the Missouri Bureau of Geology and Mines in 931 and 1932 disclosed a large positive anomaly about a mile south of Bourbon, Mo. 3/ Electrical resistivity measurements made by the Division of Geophysical Exploration of the Bureau of Mines in the winter of 1942-43 indicated that the source of this anomaly was in the pre-Cambrian rhyolite at a depth of more than 1,400 feet. 4/In order to determine the character of the material that caused the magnetic anomaly, which might be either a body of magnetite or a large intrusive of basic rock, the Bureau of Mines drilled four holes to depths of 1,800 to 2,300 feet. Magnetite in rhyolite porphyry was encountered at 1,600 to 2,000 feet, and this is doubtless the main source of the magnetic anomaly, although it is possible that additional iron ore exists at greater depth.Hole 1 was apparently located southeast of the source of the anomaly and encountered only small stringers of magnetite. Hole 2 penetrated four mineralized zones having a total thickness of 125.7 feet and an average weighted content of 43.52 percent iron and 31.62 percent silica. These zones were tested again by a deflection hole, 2A, which gave nearly identical indications. Hole 3, 500 feet north of hole 2, penetrated 58 foot of mineralized rhyolito containing an average 43.4 percent iron.Metallurgical tests showed that the silica in the ore is tightly locked with the magnetite. After grinding to minus 100 mesh, a 66 percent iron con¬centrate with 7 percent silica was obtained by flotation."

"Soil mixing is a proven solution for the construction of ground improvement adjacent to sensitive structures due to the use of computer controlled and monitored equipment. The precision to which geometry is controlled can often be the deciding factor for selection of soil mixing versus other means of ground improvement. Protection of existing structures and utilities requires careful planning, investigation, and may demand supplemental control measures. During planning, it is imperative that the process be fully developed by the project team to ensure proper control measures are budgeted; otherwise, the success and safety of a project can be jeopardized.This paper discusses case histories of soil mixing performed in close proximity to large, sensitive, and critical utilities, including foundation support for an existing earthen dam impounding a water reservoir in upstate NY, a buffer zone for a tunnel drop shaft at an operating wastewater treatment plant in Washington DC, and a containment system to protect a major water line along an interstate widening project in Baltimore, MD. The function of soil mixing as ground improvement varied; however, the selection and application of the technique versus other means of ground improvement was specific due to the controlled manner of construction with soil mixing. Through the three case studies, small diameter (3- ft [0.9 m]), large diameter (8-ft [2.4 m]), and mass mixing applications will be discussed. Furthermore, the case studies offer insight into how the geotechnical community in the Mid-Atlantic utilizes soil mixing technology for widely varying applications. Additional topics of discussion will be the design and construction of the ground improvement systems, procedures and execution of the work to protect existing structures, and the QA/QC methods, procedures, and results from the projects.INTRODUCTIONWet soil mixing, also known as the Deep Mixing Method, is a ground improvement technique that improves the characteristics of weak soils by mechanically mixing them with cementitious binder slurry. To construct columns, a powerful drill advances a mixing tool with radial mixing paddles located near the bottom of the drill string. The binder slurry is pumped through the drill string to the tool as it advances and additional soil mixing is achieved as the tool is withdrawn.Wet soil mixing is applicable in a wide range of soils. Soil mixing has been performed at depths more than 100 lf (30 m). Soils vary widely in their ability to be mixed, depending on the soil type, strength, water content, plasticity, stratigraphy, and texture. Almost any soil type, including organics, can be treated with certain soil mixing technologies, although they may require high binder contents and/or pretreatment to achieve the required results. In cases when the target soil is very soft, including some very weak clays and peats, 100% of the soil may require treatment. This complete coverage of soil mixing is referred to as mass mixing."

Bauxite residue (red mud) is an alkaline waste derived from the industrial process for extraction of alumina from bauxite ore. Some bauxite residues contain considerable concentrations of critical metals, for example, rare earth elements. Lithium in red mud was also reported as a potential resource. In the current study, a Li-rich red mud was leached using acetic acid to investigate the leaching behavior of lithium followed by neutralizing with hydrochloric or oxalic acid. By neutralizing red mud using diluted hydrochloric acid (0.01 mol/L), 58.04–60.27% of lithium was leached using 25% acetic acid at 95 °C for 60 min. In the meantime, more than 95% of sodium and 85% of calcium were also dissolved in the leachate solution. While oxalic acid (0.5 mol/L) was used to neutralize red mud prior to acetic acid leaching, lithium performed lower leaching efficiencies (42.41–46.88%) in comparison of using of hydrochloric acid–neutralized red mud. Nevertheless, these leaching efficiencies of lithium were close to that of calcium and much higher than those of sodium under the condition. In this study, 25% (v/v) of acetic acid, at 85 °C for 60 min, was demonstrated as optimum conditions for lithium extraction from oxalic acid–neutralized red mud using acetic acid. The results would be useful and of interest for lithium recovery and purification from red mud.

Introduction In presenting this paper on the water-power resources of the Province of Manitoba, it was considered that a brief resume of the power resources of Canada, of the power already developed, and its utilization in the industries 9f the country, would be of particular interest in showing the rapid progress that has already been made. Amongst Canada's national assets, water power occupies a foremost place because of the facilities it provides for the development of her other great natural resources. The rapid development of the mining, pulp and paper, and general manufacturing industries, and the concomitant growth in urbanization, with its numerous demands for domestic, commercial, and municipal service power, have combined to stimulate hydraulic development to a point surpassing even the most sanguine predictions of a few years ago. With the bringing into operation during 1928 of hydraulic turbines aggregating over 550,300 h.p., and of a further 378,400 h.p. in 1929, Canada's total hydraulic development at the end of 1929 amounted to over 5,700,000 h.p., and in this year, 1930, the active construction in hydro-electric plants throughout the country totals in excess of 1,600,000 h .p.

Réseau Express Métropolitain (REM) is the new Light Rail Transit (LRT) network of Montreal, Canada. This new LRT network uses a century-old Mont Royal Tunnel (MRT) to connect Downtown Montreal to the north side of the Island of Montreal by passing through Mount Royal Mountain. This railway double track horseshoe tunnel is approximately 5 km (3.1 mi.) long, 8.8 m (29 ft.) wide and 5.5 m (18 ft.) high, with a constant 0.6% grade. Due to different geological characteristics of the surrounding ground, varied from hard rock to soft soil, different cross sections and excavation methods were adopted for construction of this tunnel. In order to use MRT in the modern transit system, the tunnel needed to be inspected, rehabilitated and be compliant to the recent safety standards. This paper presents a summary of history and characteristics of the existing tunnel plus the implemented steps to upgrade the tunnel. It includes the details of the structural inspection and rehabilitation methods of the tunnel. Further, this paper summarizes the procedures for the space proong, construction of the separation center wall, and the tunnel enlargement. It also describes parts of complications encountered during the construction and solutions implemented to tackle these issues.

New information on possible resource value of sea floor manganese nodule deposits in the eastern North Pacific has been obtained by study of records and collections of the 1972 Sea Scope Expedition. Nodule abundance (percent of sea floor covered) varies greatly, to judge from bottom photographs from 8 stations and data from other sources. All estimates considered reliable are plotted on a map of the region. Similar maps show the average content of Ni, Cu, Mn, and Co at 89 stations from which 3 or more nodules were analyzed. Variations in nodule metal content at each station are shown graphically in an appendix, where data on nodule sizes are also given. Results of new analyses of 420 nodules from 93 stations, for Mn, Fe, Ni, Cu, Co, and Zn, are listed in another appendix. Relatively high Ni+Cu content is restricted chiefly to four groups of stations in the equatorial region, where group averages are 1.86, 1.99, 2.47, and 2255 weight percent. These and a few other areas may warrant more exploration. It is hoped that this report will stimulate new interest in North Pacific nodule deposits and that the maps and quantitative data will aid future exploration.

Wind turbine components undergo many loading cycles during their operational life. Additionally, wind turbines may undergo extreme loading conditions from natural hazards, mechanical failures, or emergency stops. Current design practice for the foundations of wind turbines accounts for these complex loading conditions through a simplified pseudo-static approach based structural loading combinations. A rotational stiffness for the foundation is estimated from the pseudo-static analysis and then compared to an acceptable minimum rotational stiffness provided by the turbine manufacturer. These minimum rotational stiffnesses are based on dynamic analysis of the tower and nacelle system with the foundation represented as linear springs. This approach provides a reasonable approach to the foundation design but does not accurately capture the true dynamic performance of the entire soil-foundation-tower-nacelle system. This becomes especially important for pier-type foundations, which are being more commonly used to support modern and future generations of larger turbines. Additionally, the dynamic performance of the foundation will vary as the adjacent soil undergoes a large number of loading cycles of varying strain magnitudes. In this study, the full turbine-tower-foundation-soil system was modeled using finite element methods. An advanced non-linear soil constitutive model and dynamic loading time histories were used to investigate changes in stiffness of the soil, and the possible impact on the dynamic response of the system. Results were compared to conventional design methodologies with the goal of reducing foundation capital costs while avoiding increases in O&M costs and which can lower the LCOE of wind energy.

I~JTI HE work on the indium-zirconium system is part A of a larger investigation of zirconium-phase diagrams with solute elements, silver, cadmium, indium, tin, and antimony, which is intended to provide information about the metallic valency of zirconium. The system is an ideal example since the sizes of indium and zirconium atoms are nearly the same, and the solute and the solvent occur in the same row of the periodic table. The only solute from Group III B which had previously been added to zirconium was aluminum' and it was of interest to determine whether indium would dissolve appreciably in alpha zirconium and stabilize this phase in the same manner. Experimental Procedure The experimental methods used in the indium-zirconium work are similar to those described earlier for the silver-zirconium system.' Reactor Grade 1 iodide zirconium of 99.95 pct purity* and indium of 99.99 pct purity were arc cast, and then annealed in silica capsules with protective foils of zirconium and molybdenum. Annealing temperatures and times varied from 1 day at 1300°C to 43 days at 550°C. The compositions of the alloys were detcrmined by an individual chemical analysis of the actual metallographic specimens after two or more sides were examined to insure the absence of solute segregation. Calibrated thermocouples were used throughout, and the uncertainty in the temperatures reported, owing to calibration error, furnace control, and measurement of the small temperature gradients near the capsules, is believed to be well within ±2°C. Typical impurities in the alloys were found by a neutron-activation analysis of four different alloys. The results are given in Table I where the ranges of values will be seen to compare favorably with the usual values for iodide zirconium. With respect to oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon the absence of any unusual amount of these elements compared to iodide zirconium was indicated by the alloy hardness values, since hardness is increased sharply by the presence of these elements. The value for 0 pct In, obtained from the alloys by extrapolation, is 58 2 7 VPN which is in the low part3 f the normal range of hardness found in iodide zirconium. WMS boosts the traceability of material while optimizing the storage space. The operations in the yard are safer and logically organized according to algorithms that are specifically adjusted case by case. WMS can easily handle multi-cranes yard avoiding conflicts and increasing accuracy of positioning with decreased number of movements. The synergy of automatic cranes and WMS reduces bottlenecks and speeds up the preparation of deliveries with an overall improvement of warehousing and shipping scheduling.

"The International Nickel Company of Canada Limited consumes some 33 ½ millions of gallons of fresh water and reuses more than 100 millions of gallons of water daily. The continuing search for suitable recycle methodology has enabled the Company to put one 25,000 TPD mill on line utilizing recycled water entirely and a second 35,000 TPD mill is under construction which will likewise employ the concept of recycled water. Future milling plans are aimed at the replacement of all fresh water with recycled water, including sewage effluent and mine waste water.WATER REUSE AT INCO’s SUDBURY MILLSAs man searches unexplored horizons for new and economic industry, he must be constantly and acutely aware of the presence or absence of that precious commodity without which Industry, indeed Man himself, could not survive -- W A T E R. The water requirements of the world today are magnanimous, considering that in 1960 the estimated consumption in the United States was over 300 billion GPD (l) or more than 1,700 GPD per person(5) The magnitude of the problem can be visualized as one considers that three times this quantity of water will be required in the United States by the year 2000, when the dependable supplies of water are estimated to be only two-thirds of that required(2). "Advanced data acquisition and process modelling technology provides online data and decision support about different aspects of the resource extraction process. Real-time approaches have recently been applied to utilize the value of this information for improved production control in mineral resource extraction in different operational set ups including coal, polymetallic ore and gold deposits. The key concept of these approaches promotes the change in paradigm from discontinuous intermittent process monitoring to a continuous process and quality management system in the resource extraction process. The framework includes a real-time feedback control loop that rapidly links online material characteristics data acquired during extraction at the mining face, during material handling and processing with a sequentially up-datable resource model. This will allow near real-time optimization of decisions related to long-term planning, short-term sequencing and production control. The contribution reviews recent developments in the three main constituents sensor based material characterisation, rapid updating of grade control models and simulation based optimization for improved production control. Technological readiness is assessed and critical gaps for further technology development are identified. The value added is illustrated by means of selected case studies. INTRODUCTION With the depletion of known and established mineral reserves, the decrease in head grades and the continuing demand of mineral raw materials by the modern society, future exploitation will move towards extraction of deposits under geologically more complex conditions. Complex deposits are characterized by a low continuity in grade, presence of deleterious elements such as arsenic and high irregularity in the geometry of the ore boundaries. The profitable exploitation of such deposits becomes significantly more challenging. To be able to better utilize such unconventional mineral resources of the future, smart autonomous mining systems are needed, which integrate local exploration of spatially varying material characteristics in–situ and have the ability to follow and extract the pay zones in the ore body while minimizing dilution (Buxton and Benndorf, 2013). The main barriers to overcome for the successful economic exploitation are: • effective grade control which will maximize resource potential along the whole value chain, • minimization of handling zero-value material introduced by dilution, thus • reducing unnecessary expenditure of energy and financial resources and • management and control of the geological uncertainty due to limited information available,"

A coal mine located in southern West Virginia recently set a world record for daily low-seam coal production using a Cat automated longwall plow system. In a 24-hour period on April 10 and 11, 2014, the Pinnacle Mine longwall produced 32,411 t (35,724 st) from the Virginia Pocahontas No. 3 Seam, in a seam height of just 1.42 m (56 in.) along the 298-m (980-ft) longwall face. The Pinnacle Mine, located near the town of Pineville and owned by Cliffs Natural Resources Inc., an international mining and resource company, operates a Cat Gleithobel GH1600 Longwall Plow System. A previous record was set by this system at Pinnacle in August, 2012 when 29,423 t (32,430 st) were mined in a 24-hour period. The record was set by the same system, mining its second panel after a comprehensive rebuild was performed by Carter Machinery, the Cat Dealer in that area. The rebuild encompassed a complete rebuild of the headgate and tailgate armored face conveyor (AFC) drive, the headgate and tailgate special AFC pans, the stageloader drives and return end, the complete crusher and all gearboxes for the plow, AFC and stageloader. Carter acquired the rights to sales and aftermarket support associated with the former Bucyrus mining products, both surface and underground, in 2013. ?Supporting and rebuilding a longwall plow system was a new experience for the Carter service team,? said Chris Curfman, president of Caterpillar Global Mining Sales and Support Division. ?However, given the record production results attained by the rebuilt system at Pinnacle, it?s obvious that they are up to the challenge of supporting the underground product lines at the same high standards and quality level that they have been delivering for many years on the traditional Cat surface mining products.? Tom Bluth, president of Caterpillar Global Mining Products Division, said, ?Caterpillar congratulates the Pinnacle team for this great achievement. Without their efforts and dedication this record would not have been possible. To safely deliver that kind of output from such a thin seam is remarkable. We have been privileged to work alongside their team to demonstrate the capabilities of Cat longwall mining technology. ?

The principal goal of the Oil-Shale Mining Division is to develop the most economical methods and practices for mining oil shale. Experimental work in the mine has not progressed far enough to conduct full-scale breaking tests; therefore, mining season - to October 31, 1945, has been confined largely to problems connected with drilling cost oil shale. Calculations have indicated that commercial production will result in breaking the oil shale; the largest individual turn will be for drilling. This paper is a report on the progress of phase two of drilling research to date; it outlines the development of a successful hard-surfaced rock bit for drilling oil shale.
