"The nickel deposits of Sudbury, discovered in .1885, have probably commanded as much attention as any single group of orebodies in the world. They have been the major source of the world's nickel supply since 1903, when their production first surpassed that from the Pacific Island of New Caledonia. From 1903 to 1914 the production from New Caledonia remained essentially constant, whereas that from Sudbury increased from 13,000,000 to 50,000,000 pounds a year. After 1914 the production from New Caledonia gradually dropped to about 4,000,000 pounds in 1919, where it remained until 1923. During these years the Canadian production increased steadily and since 1923 has gone up at an amazing rate to a peak of over 280,000,000 pounds in 1941. Meanwhile the New Caledonia production increased to about 10,000,000 pounds until the pressure of war raised it to roughly 14,000,000 pounds a year.The Sudbury deposits, because they have been the source of 80 per cent of the world supply of nickel, because of their economic importance to the world of metals, and because they are geologically unique in their occurrence, structure, and genesis, have attracted foremost consideration and the literature relative to their geology is voluminous. This is particularly true in regard to genesis.There is a significant and interesting parallel in time between the advancement of the science of economic geology and the great expansion of the nickel industry. The controversies regarding the fundamental classification of orebodies into generalized types were in full swing during the height of the development and expansion of the great nickel mines, and the Sudbury deposits, being the most important and the only ones of the sulphide type extensively developed, have been the chief source of information in regard to this type. The observations and the conclusions drawn thereon from numerous studies of the various mines of the district have not only influenced, but are the essence of, this chapter of the science."

Ten Council meetings were held during the year with an average attendance of seventeen and the standing committees held 45 meetings. FINANCE The annual accounts, which are attached to this report, show an excess of expenditure over income of R4,608 compared with R2,124 last year. This deterioration can be attributed largely to two important factors, namely an increase in secretarial fees of RI, 789 and an increase in the loss on the Journal from R2,343 to R3,508. In addition, our contribution to the expenses of the Federation of Societies of Professional Engineers increased by R607 from R549 to R1,156. The increase in secretarial fees is partly due to our increased demand for services and partly to increased salaries. In order to maintain its essential services it has been necessary for the A.S. & T.S. to increase salaries in order to keep pace with commerce and industry. With regard to the Journal, we did not expect immediate dramatic results from the changes that were effected as from the beginning of last year in the arrangements for publication. However, the improvement has been even slower in materialising than we expected. This situation is being watched carefully and we will not hesitate to make further changes if necessary. It became clear early in the year that the financial position was deteriorating and your Council decided that it was essential to meet the situation by raising subscriptions and entrance fees. At the same time it was decided that there are no grounds for a distinction between Town and Country members and that in future the scale for the compounding of subscriptions should be based on anticipated future membership, rather than past membership. These changes have had only a minor effect on the accounts under consideration. The MacArthur Forrest Memorial Fund shows an excess of income over expenditure of R132 and the total fund was, therefore, increased by this amount to R4,338. The balance sheet shows that the market value of quoted shares and debentures decreased during the year from R13,059 to R6,567, while accumulated funds now amount to R17,959 compared with R22,567 last year. It will also be noted that we are holding R25,844 on behalf of the Symposium on Opencast Mining. MEMBERSHIP Twenty-eight Fellows, twenty-four Members, seventeen Graduates, twenty-five Associates and twenty-seven Students were elected during the year. "CANMET’s Mining and Mineral Sciences Laboratories have developed the Canadian Mining Technology Network (CMT-Net), a website to provide industry with up to date information on technologies in several areas. This paper gives background on the Mineral and Metal Processing sector, describes the steps leading to the development of the websites strategy and gives a tour of CMT-Net. IntroductionThe government of Canada is developing a strategy aimed at fostering the development of value-added activities in the area of mineral and metal processing (MMP). Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) and Industry Canada will partner in delivering on this strategy. Instrumental in defining the main thrusts of the value-added strategy was a series of consultations held across Canada with representatives of companies and organizations active in the sector. The objective of the consultations was to identify barriers to the development of activities which add value in the sector, as well as point to positive factors.Following the consultations, a discussion paper was produced, “From Mineral Resources to Manufactured Products: Towards a Value- Added Mineral and Metal Strategy for Canada” (Natural Resources Canada, 1998). The paper reviews the sector’s structure and main statistical information, lists some of the positive factors and barriers to value-added activities and defines a new partnership between industry and government that will lead to more valueadded activities. The main objective of the paper is to serve as a discussion document between stakeholders during the development of the strategy."

"INTRODUCTION The primary object of this investigation was to determine changes in physical and chemical properties of subbituminous lump coal while in storage for 8 months in a typical residence and to demonstrate how this fuel may be stored without degradation or spontaneous combustion. The second object of the study was to determine how the stored coal performed in a hand-fired furnace operated under practical conditions.The investigation revealed that if care is exercised in placing sub-bituminous lump coal in a closed bin, no significant slacking or degrada¬tion occurs, no hazards arise, and over-all indicated efficiencies of about 65 to 69 percent can be obtained under practical,firing conditions that the average home owner can meet.Owing to the war emergency, much attention is being given to the proper storage of coal, and campaigns are being conducted to increase the quantity of coal being stored to relieve transportation and production overloads. Ordinarily, coal dealers do not recommend storage of subbituminous coal in homes owing to deterioration of the coal and to possible hazards from spontaneous combustion. This practice has grown from some troubles that have been experienced, which can be traced to improper preparation, improper bins, and poor technique in placing coal in a bin. There is no good reason why subbiturninous lump coal cannot be stored safely in homes."

A mineral purvey of the Granite Chief RARE II area (A5-261), covering about 23,400 acres (9,470 ha) of Tahoe National Forest and the Like Tahoe Management Unit, was conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines and the U.S. Geological Survey in 1979 and 1980 (fig. 1). The investigation by the Bureau of Mines indicates that the area has a low potential for mineral resources. Samples taken from prospect pits and favorable outcrops indicate no minable quantities of precious or base metals. Placer deposits are too small and low grade to be considered a resource.

The freezing and subsequent solidifying of unstable, weak (sands, silts and clays) and/or wet soil to form a desired-shape frozen barrier around a construction area are possibly the main features of the freezing method for shaft sinking. The barrier, along with strengthening the soil, provides a dry environment to ensure sustainable subsurface construction work before placing a permanent lining. The freezing method requires the installation of freezing pipes in boreholes around the construction area and the circulation of chilled salt water through these pipes and has long been a proven technique for dry shaft sinking through unstable and water-bearing seam around the world. As removing heat from the ground is the main feature of the method, an efficient thermal design of the freezing process is mandatory to ensure success of the shaft sinking operation. This applies to both the sustainability and economy of the intended structure. The design presented in this paper is aimed at figuring out the heat-removing ability and operating time of the refrigerative equipment using some simple formulae. The authors adopted a theoretical approach to determine the quantity of heat to be removed from the ground. The amount of energy for the equipment was found to be greater than that for freezing, which proved the validity of the design. The active freezing period was calculated to be 121 days. The authors followed the structural design of the freezing process they proposed in their previous work (Farazi and Quamruzzaman, 2013). Though the first coal seam in the coalfield was encountered at a depth of approximately 352 m in the subsurface, the target depth for cooling and freezing was decided to be 162 m. The formation demands extra care to nullify its risk of the temporary structure collapsing and water rushing in (Farazi et al., 2012). Discussion on the determination of refrigerative equipment parameters was excluded from the scope of this work.

Tracking plant and personnel in underground environments provides multiple potential benefits for a mine including increasing safety, better monitoring of production, traffic control, and in the future monitoring and control of autonomous vehicles. The main techniques for wireless tracking are to use radio frequency identification (RFID), signal strength based techniques, and time of arrival (TOA) based techniques. RFID does not provide continuous tracking and signal strength techniques have poor accuracy in the complex radio propagation environment present in mines. TOA based techniques are potentially the most accurate, but most current equipment does not realise the potential of the technique. CSIRO has been developing the wireless ad-hoc system for positioning (WASP) system for wireless tracking in a range of challenging environments including underground mines. WASP has been licensed for sporting applications and has delivered encouraging results in early trials for a surface and an underground mining application. The system utilises a number of ‘anchor nodes’ that are placed at surveyed fixed locations within the mine, and tags attached to plant or personnel to be tracked. The system provides an ad hoc data communication network, thus wired data connections are not required to the anchor nodes. WASP uses transmissions in the 5.8 GHz ISM (instrumentation, scientific and medical) frequency spectrum to perform highly accurate ranging between nodes, hence tracking of tags. The localisation performance of the system depends upon the radio propagation environment, ranging from 0.1 m in low multipath conditions. In this paper we describe the WASP system and provide results of initial testing in an underground mine that shows that the system achieves high ranging accuracy, hence localisation accuracy.

Sensor-based bulk ore sorting is a form of preconcentration that autonomously measures and physically separates discrete bulk ‘pods’ of run of mine (‘ROM’) or primary crushed material. This case study examines the results of a full scale bulk ore sorting trial undertaken at Cozamin mine in Zacatecas, Mexico in 2019. The bulk ore sorting plant comprised primarily of a mobile jaw crusher, fixed conveyor, MR analyser, and diverter gate. Results of the trial demonstrate that bulk ore sorting could deliver a net improvement in copper metal fed to the processing plant of 6-8 per cent within an equal gross tonnage of ore. Copper metal increases were the result of improvements in mining recovery, where valuable mineralisation is recovered from marginal or sub-grade material that would otherwise be discarded as waste or stockpiled as low-grade. The increase in mining recovery more than compensates for metal losses suffered in the bulk ore sorting plant.

INTRODUCTION The first references in the literature to the so-called C.S.I.R. 'doorstopper' strain cell were made in 1964 1,2,3,4. These were the climax of nearly two years of experimental and developmental work with the instruments and the operating techniques involved. Since that time numerous field measurements have been made with 'doorstoppers' and they have been developed to a stage where they are in commercial production and are being supplied to users throughout the world. No detailed description of the latest 'doorstopper' equipment has, however, appeared in print and this paper is written to bring the literature up to date in this respect. The triaxial strain cell was developed three years ago 5, 6, 7 and was first described at the First Congress of the International Society for Rock Mechanics in Lisbon in 1966 8. Since that date laboratory tests and-particularly important-field tests 7' 9 have demonstrated the validity and practicality of the instruments and techniques. These instruments have also been developed to a stage where they have been released for commercial production. In this form they are very different from those described two years ago and a full description of them at this stage seems to be justified. THE INFORMATION SUPPLIED BY 'DOORSTOPPER' AND TRIAXIAL STRAIN CELLS Both the 'doorstopper' and triaxial strain cells were designed specifically to determine the absolute stress in rock using an overcoring stress relieving technique. They were not designed to measure changes in stress. They may, however, be used for the latter purpose provided the glue which is used to stick the strain gauges to the rock is known to possess sufficiently stable strain-time characteristics as not to affect the accuracy of the results during the time the measurements are made. The 'doorstopper' was designed primarily to measure the major principal stress in situations where its direction and those of the two other principal stresses were either known or could be assumed. For example, at great depth in undisturbed virgin ground, it is reasonable to assume that the maximum principal stress is vertical and that the other two lie in a horizontal plane. The borehole in which the 'doorstopper' is installed would thus be drilled in the horizontal plane parallel to one of the minor principal stresses, the direction of which would either have to be assumed or determined as described later. The stresses measured would be the vertical major principal stress and the principal stress acting in a horizontal plane normal to the borehole axis. It is possible, as will be shown later, to obtained the complete state of stress using 'doorstoppers'. In this event, it is necessary to make measurements in three boreholes drilled in any three known directions to each other and relative to a system of three orthogonal axes. The triaxial strain cell was designed to determine the complete state of stress in a single borehole drilled in any direction in any stress field. "INTRODUCTION As we push further into the 21st century and closer to a more efficient mine, safety and operational enhancements are the two major keys towards attaining success. The Crusher Vision Automation System (CVAS) is a technological advance that will allow an operator to achieve higher safety and higher operational goals in the same piece of equipment. The CVAS is a patent pending system and method for measuring and maintaining the closed side setting (CSS) on gyratory crushers. In the same equipment and technology package, the CVAS will also allow safer placement of main shaft pieces for maintenance and replacement. This technology yields multiple uses and allows a site to significantly enhance safety and operational efficiencies. This measurement technique is used to provide more accurate data and faster data collection times than current techniques used today. It will give crusher operators accurate and reliable measurement for the CSS in a live, operating environment. Measurement data can be collected in five minutes allowing for fast adjustment of the mantle position and subsequent enhancement and streamlining of a crusher and downstream flowsheet. The advantage of this system is that it is permanently mounted at the crusher location, where the operator can turn the system on and off as many times as they like throughout the day with a goal of maintaining a constant CSS gap based on production and maintenance criteria to help streamline operations and enhance safety efficiencies.Regarding its other main functional area, mainshaft maintenance, it allows this work to be performed remotely while keeping personnel safer and out of harm’s way. SAFETY ENHANCEMENT The safety factor enhancement with this system is extreme. It does not require the use of overhead cranes, cleaning out the crusher, lowering people into the crusher or having the operator lower paint cans or lead balls into the crusher pocket while the crusher is in operation for measuring the setting. In order to perform the CSS measurements, the operator only needs to operate the laser through manipulation of a joystick while watching the video feed. Danger of a person falling into the crusher while trying to take measures is eliminated, as are the effects of handling lead balls and tracer dyes."

The U.S. Bureau of Mines is currently conducting laboratory experiments to study the reactions occurring during in situ leaching of oxide copper ores hosted by biotite-poor granite and biotite-rich granite porphyry. Detailed pre-leach and post-leach petrographic examinations of the rock samples are combined with the leach solution chemistry resulting from core leaching experiments to enable an evaluation of the various reactions which are responsible for the observed fluid chemistry. The information resulting from these laboratory studies is being utilized to support the design of the Bureau's ongoing field research project at the Santa Cruz deposit near Casa Grande, AZ. Atacamite and chrysocolla are the primary copper minerals present in this deposit, and both are readily soluble in the dilute 5% sulfuric acid solutions used in these experiments. In addition to the dissolution of copper minerals, biotite dissolution also occurs during the experiments, contributing K, Mg, Fe, and Al to the leach solution. The biotite dissolution appears to be non-stoichiometric, as it is progressively altered to vermiculite and finally, amorphous silica. While K, Mg, and Fe concentrations in solution steadily increase with time, Al quickly reaches a maximum, and then remains relatively constant for the remainder of the experiment. This suggests that Al saturation is achieved, and this Is supported by the presence of precipitated Al sulfate and aluminosillcate clay mineralization in the post-leach rock samples.

This paper traces the evolution of the cast-in-place industry. Emphasis is on developments in the United States; however, since there has been a substantial fusion of US and European processes, notable European developments are also discussed.

Northwestern Resources Co. (NWR) was established in 1972 as a wholly-owned subsidiary of Western Energy Company of Butte, Montana, to acquire, explore, develop, and produce energy resources outside the state of Montana. Western Energy is a coal mining company with successful operations in Montana and Wyoming. In 1974, NWR acquired its first lignite lease in Texas. NWR eventually acquired a large leasehold in central Texas, which was identified as having a high potential for future production. In 1979. NWR contracted to supply lignite to Utility Fuels, Inc. (UFI), a fuel affiliate of Houston Lighting and Power Company (HL&P). This project, together with leases held by UFI, became the Jewett Mine. Lignite from the Jewett Mine is used as fuel at the adjacent HL&P Limestone Electric Generating Station, at an annual rate of approximately 7.3 Gkg (eight (8) million tons) per year.

This circular presents the method of making tests and apparent results of comparing performance of tungsten carbide insert bits and steel detachable bits by the Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co. at the company's mines on the Marquette iron range of Michigan. The mines are at Ishpeming and Negaunee, Mich., and include the Cliffs Chaft, Mather "A", Cambria-Jackson, and Mather "B". There are four general characteristic types of high-grade iron ore on the Marquette range. B. H. Boyum2/ classifies the Cliffs Shaft as "hard-ore" and the Cambria-Jackson and Mather "A" as "soft-ore" types of deposit. Shaft sinking through Jasper, slate, and graywacke was in progress at this writing at the Mather "B", with completion at 3,100-foot depth in August 1949. The many different kinds of rock and ore at the mines of the Cleveland- Cliffs Iron Co. and the experimental work being carried on with carbide in- sert bits make it possible to compare, generally, the carbide insert and steel detachable bit. The type of "hard ore" at the Cliffs Shaft mine re- quired close study of the possible use of the insert tit, and their records are more complete than those of the "soft-ore" mines. History and development of tungsten carbide tips inserted in rock drill bits have been covered by R. W. Adamson, C. H. Vivian, R. C. Sullivan,5/ and others. Tungsten carbide insert rock bits have only recently been introduced to the domestic mining industry. Although unusual performance records are being reported at operations employing the insert bits, the general adaptability of the tool to all rock types and the advantages to be gained by using carbide insert tits remains to be demonstrated. Insert-bit performance is being observed at numerous mines and quarries throughout the United States The several mining operations at the Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co. at Ishpeming, Mich., is one site where exhaustive comparative tests of insert and conventional steel detachable bits are currently in progress. Archean supracrustal rocks of the South Pass greenstone belt of western Wyoming have been the State's most prolific source of gold and iron ore. Actual gold production statistics are incomplete, but as much as 400 to 500 thousand ounces may have been mined with some silver and tungsten as a by-product. Iron ore was also mined from the greenstone belt for 22 years, and production totaled more than 90 million tons. Immediately south of the exposed greenstone belt in the Oregon Buttes area, Tertiary boulder conglomerate, which has been eroded from the granite-greenstone terrain, may contain a gold resource of 28.5 million ounces (Love and others, 1978). The amount of gold placered from stream alluvium derived from these Tertiary conglomerates is unknown.

The GRATE-KILN System plant at Svappavaara, Sweden, was constructed for LKAB by Allis-Chalmers under a turnkey contract and commissioned in 1969. The plant was designed to produce iron ore pellets from magnetite concentrate at 6100 mtpd using imported fuel oil. It represented the state of the art for plants of its type at the time. Fuel rated capacity was attained within one week of start-up. Product quality, power usage, fuel consumption and machine wear were within warranty limits during sustained production thereafter. As operator skills improved and gas handling system reserve capability was utilized, the plant frequently produced acceptable product at up to 115% of design capacity. During the period 1969 to 1976, market demands increased for high-quality pellets while energy costs rose steadily. At the same time, important advances in the design of GRATE-KILN Systems were being made in other plants constructed by Allis-Chalmers.

Improvements in fine (28x0) and ultrafine (200x0) coal cleaning is an acknowledged goal with potential benefits in both steam and metallurgical coal markets. This work focuses on adaptation to fine coal flotation of FLOTE, a computer simulation model of the froth flotation process originally developed in the hard minerals field. FLOTE describes the flotation of solids based on particle surface activity, composition, and size. The quasi steady state model was applied to predict flotation performance at an Eastern Kentucky, full scale metallurgical coal preparation plant. Parameter estimation and model testing used detailed flotation test data from a five stage rougher flotation bank. Overall grade/recovery predictions compared well with known plant performance under variation of principally feed grade, plant throughput and reagent addition; however, grade/ recovery predictions for each cell weaken under overloading conditions. Analysis of grade/recovery over a range of sizes is presented. Suggested model improvements and extensions are discussed.

Sophisticated pit optimisation software has allowed mine planning engineers to generate mining outlines that consider the numerous factors that have a major effect on the success or otherwise of a mine plan. The outlines are generally generated using a range of values for which one can assume a fixed mining cost and a variable revenue. During analysis, the expected costs and revenues are used to investigate the cashflow and sensitivities. Ultimately, the final pit and incremental outlines, or shells, are selected for a given expected price. This paper proposes an alternative method for incremental pit shell selection that considers the risk the mine be prepared to accept. The life of mine is divided into a number of Business Risk Periods (BRPs). The BRP represents the period of time over which the owner is prepared to invest capital. During each BRP, the mine will then operate at a selected investment cost which is generally equal to or greater than the minimum required to meet production targets. In this way, a robust mine plan can be produced which allows the mine to react to change without having to alter the incremental shell limits while maintaining a strategic risk profile. This paper will summarise factors to be considered in selection of the BRP and the incremental pit shells within the BRP.
