Develop hydrometallurgical or pyrometallurgical recycling methods to recover valuable rare-earth compounds from various forms of NdFeB magnet scrap. Background The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) has developed technology to treat and recycle a variety of wastes containing valuable and strategic metals. As part of this effort, the USBM developed a process to separate neodymium and other valuable rare earths from iron in NdFeB magnet scrap (fig. 1). Since this scrap typically contains nearly 30 weight percent neodymium and since the demand for neodymium is constantly increasing, cost-effective methods for scrap treatment could have a significant impact on industrial expenditure and materials supply in the expanding area of magnet manufacture. Approach A hydromctallurgical, H2SO4 dissolution-precipitation process provided the most effective treatment for separating rare earths from bulk NdFcB magnet scrap (fig. 2). Precipitation of neodymium-alkali sulfate double salt proved advantageous over direct precipitation of fluoride or oxalate products. This double salt is easily converted to a variety of useful rare-earth compounds, which eliminates many of the materials-handling and economic problems inherent with direct precipitation. Following rare-earth precipitation, dissolved iron was removed from the acid leach solution by precipitation as a jarosite.

"Recent fluid inclusion and stable isotopic studies in the Bousquet mining district have identified spatial and temporal trends in mineralization temperatures and isotopic compositions of vein forming fluids. These studies indicate that mineralizing temperatures were lower during sterile vein formation (T=200-300°C) than during auriferous vein formation (T = 300-400°C), and that 8 80 values of minerals in sterile veins are lower by 1-3 %o than in associated auriferous veins. In addition to these small differences in 8 80 within individual mineralized zones, a trend of increasing 8 80 values of vein minerals is identified from west to east across the district, with 8 80 of vein minerals increasing by4-6%o. Quantitative evaluation of potential causes of the observed oxygen isotopic shifts suggests that the best explanation for these trends is the derivation of the mineralizing fluids from an isotopically inhomogeneous terrain in which the fluid isotopic compositions are controlled by the isotopic compositions of the host lithologies due to high rock/water ratios in these source terrains. This inhomogeneous source terrain is interpreted as consisting of the Blake River Group volcanics (low 8 80 component) and the adjoining Kewagama and Cadillac Group sediments (high 8 80 component).The genesis of the hydrothermal fluids is attributed to crustal heating during metamorphism, with the fluids representing metamorphic dewatering products and/or fluids incorporated during deposition and burial of the host lithologies. Ductile deformation of the fluid source regions impeded fluid migration during metamorphism; the ultimate release of the mineralizing fluids is attributed to the penetration to depth of vertical structures (fault and shear zones) during brittle deformation of the crust under waning metamorphic conditions. Release of fluids caused by this puncturing of the closed hydrologic source regime produced a localized zone of lowered pressure, drawing fluids from adjacent lithologies toward the fault zones, feeding further hydrothermal fluid upwelling. Au mineralization resulted from chemical processes related to cooling of the hydrothermal fluids and/or interaction with lithologies encountered during fluid migration; the level of crust at which Au deposition occurred likely migrated upward with the thermal anomaly caused by hydrothermal fluid upwelling, eventually reaching the level of current exploitation. Cessation of fluid flow along the vertical structures is attributed to inadequate recharge of the hydrothermal systems as fluid contents were depleted in the lithologies proximal to the vertical structures and/or sealing of the structures by mineral deposition."

Introduction The copper smelter of the Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Company, Limited was constructed to handle the concentrates produced by the concentrator, the residues from the zinc plant, concentrates from Sherritt-Gordon Mines, Limited, and other custom material that might be available. Construction work was started in 1929 and the first concentrates were smelted in November, 1930. From that time until June, 1931, the operations were more or less of an experimental or tuning-up nature. In designing the smelter, it was believed the following tonnages would be available for smelting per day: Copper Tons Content H. B. M. & S. Co. concentrates 331 14.0 per cent H. B. M. & S. Co. zinc plant residues 77 2.5 per cent Sherritt-Gordon concentrates 200 20.0+ per cent Consideration was given to wet-smelting the charge, but, in order to give greater flexibility to the operation, it was finally decided to roast the concentrates before smelting. Briefly, the smelter equipment consists of three Nichols-Herreshoff roasters, one reverberatory furnace, two Peirce-Smith converters, a Walker casting wheel, and a four-unit Cottrell plant, two units' for the roaster gases and two for the converter gases. A general plan of the smelter is shown in Figure 1. Prior to the commencement of smelter operations, a stockpile of about 9,000 tons of concentrates had been built up by the concentrator and the old pilot-mill. The zinc plant was in operation, but the equipment for drying the residues at the smelter had not been completed. Sherritt-Gordon did not commence their shipments of concentrates until April, 1931. The only flux available was barren sand from a pit ten miles south of Flin Flon, adjacent to the railway. Several small deposits of metal-bearing siliceous ore had been discovered in the district, but none of these were sufficiently large to be considered as a source of smelter flux. At the beginning of March, 1931, the entire stockpile of concentrates had been consumed, and available tonnage for smelting was limited to the daily production of the concentrator.

This paper will examine the challenges involved in ventilating and cooling South African mines, with particular emphasis on solutions to the issues of heat (generally associated with depth), mechanization and energy efficiency. Comparisons will be made with other international mining areas. Some of the deepest mines in the world are to be found in the South African goldfields. The Mponeng mine is approaching 4,000 m below surface, with virgin rock temperatures (VRT) of between 60°C and 70°C. Mining at these depths has only been possible with the use of large refrigeration plants supplying cold air, water and ice to the workings. In the Bushveld Igneous Complex, where most of South Africa?s platinum mines are located, similar VRTs are being experienced at significantly shallower depths. This is due to the different geothermal properties of the host rock between the two areas. Existing mines are being forced to go deeper and new underground mines are being planned and constructed in other areas with widely differing thermal conditions. South African metal mining has traditionally been labour intensive for historical reasons as well as for the narrow tabular nature of many ore bodies. Due to cost pressures and labour problems, some mines have been investigating the possibility of using mechanized equipment, both diesel and electric, to increase production and to improve efficiency. Studies have been carried out to determine the effect of the additional equipment on the overall ventilation system and some of the conclusions are discussed. The use of diesel equipment adds heat and pollutants to the ventilation air but, although electrical equipment has a lesser effect on the ventilation systems, it is generally less favoured due to claims of lower flexibility/manoeuvrability. Mechanization holds the promise of more concentrated mining activities but, with higher localized ventilation and cooling needs. Systems which will control the provision of air and cooling more effectively are required and are being implemented. In the 1990s and early 2000s, the South African economy experienced significant growth which was not matched by the growth in infrastructure. Consequently, at present there is a shortage of electricity generation capacity which affects large industrial consumers, including mines. Increasing levels of heat and mechanization will require more electrical energy for ventilation and cooling. There are many initiatives underway to save power or to shift consumption to periods of national low demand and these will be described.

Research on modern hydrothermal systems provides quantitative measures of the processes of formation of hydrothermal fluids and of precipitation mechanisms from them. Studies of ancient deposits provide new information regarding volcanological processes that are related to the deposits, as well as data on their spatial and temporal compositional variations. Mew exploration guidelines result from both aspects of research. The most fundamental requirement for large metalliferous hydrothermal systems is an abundant heat supply for the upper two kilometers of the crust. This heat may come from a focused heal source (shallow-level subvolcanic intrusion), but ambient heat also may have provided enough energy for the reactions necessary to effect leaching of metals, especially where heat flow is particularly high (i.e. very large or high-temperature magmatic source, such as ultramafic environments). For most VMS systems, the majority of the metals were derived through leaching from footwall strata; in addition interstratal fluids may enter subvolcanic intrusions during episodes of magma a chamber "cracking," engendering some '?magmatic" component in the hydrothermal system. Direct contributions of metalliferous magmatic fluid also may be significant from arc-related or back-arc felsic or alkalis systems. These latter contributions may form exceptionally high - grade portions in some deposits. Subvolcanic intrusions, which are excellent indicators of high heat flow and may have been the direct driving mechanisms for some stems undergo two stages of alteration: On intrusion emplacernent. fluids may rapidly enter and react with their mesostatic portions, evident in the sills in the Middle Valley. High temperature interactions caused albitization and destruction of oxides and sulfides, releasing metals. During terminal hydrothermal stages, the metalliferous fluid collapsed into the intrusions, forming disseminated and vein sulfides.

An accurate value of formation water resistivity R, is essential in calculating formation porosity and fluid saturation from electrical well logs. In the cases where R, has not been measured directly, it must be obtained from other data, e.g., the SP curve. This paper deals with another approach: how to calculate R, from the chemical analysis of the formation water. INTRODUCTION It is known that the resistivity of aqueous solutions of pure salts depends on their concentration and on the temperature; the concentrations are given in MPL (mg of solute per liter of solution), or sometimes in ppm (mg of solute per kg of solution): MPL = ppm X specific gravity. Values for different pure salts are available in the literature, but not for solutions of mixtures which are of practical interest. The major component of the dissolved material in almost all formation waters being sodium chloride, it is customary to express the resistivity of formation waters in terms of equivalent sodium chloride concentration, i.e., the concentration of a solution of pure NaCl which has the same resistivity at a given temperature as that of the formation water under consideration. Thus, the problem of calculating R, from the chemical anaylsis can also be stated as how to convert the other constituents of the solute into equivalent NaCl concentration. Salts dissolved in water are at least partly dissociated into ions, and do not conserve their identity. If known amounts of several salts are dissolved in water, the solution does not necessarily contain the same salts in the original proportion, but perhaps some other combination of the ions, along with free ions in solution. This is why the chemical analysis of formation waters is often given in terms of ions, as if all dissolved salts were completely dissociated. Our problem then boils down to how to convert the concentrations of the various ions to equivalent concentrations of Na' and C1-. Dunlap and Hawthorne' have proposed to convert the concentration of all other ions to equivalent Na' and C1-concentrations by means of constant multipliers; e.g., 0.95 for Ca"; 2.0 for Mg"; 0.27 for HCO 3-; 0.5 for SO, -, etc. Their factors were based on measurements made at 68F on 26 formation water samples from the Texas Gulf Coast, ranging in concentration from 1,500 to 75,000 ppm. The Dunlap method is widely used in electric log interpretation, and is often extrapolated beyond its original concentration range. A comparison of R, values calculated by this method and values actually measured on formation water samples has shown large discrepancies, especially at higher concentrations. Therefore, two new methods were developed at Sinclair Oil Corp.'s Tulsa Research Center to calculate equivalent sodium chloride concentration from the chemical analysis of formation water samples. FUNDAMENTAL CONSIDERATIONS The resistivity of a solution, or its reciprocal the conductivity, at a given temperature is determined by the charge, concentration and mobility of the ions actually present. Monovalent ions such as Na' or C1- always carry the same charge. Compounds of polyvalent ions, however. may show incomplete dissociation, e.g., NaSO; + Na' instead of SO,-- + 2Na'. This happens especially in more concentrated solutions. Only very dilute solutions are completely dissociated, as assumed in the chemical analysis report. At higher concentration, the degree of dissociation depends not only on the nature and concentration of the particular salt under consideration but also on the nature and concentrations of the other solutes. Mobility of the ions depends on the viscosity of the solution. It also depends on the degree of hydration of the ions, which in turn is a function of the nature and the charge of the ions and also of the amount of free water available per ion, i.e., the total ionic concentration. The net effect is that the conductivity increases slower than proportional to the concentration, even if a solution contains only one salt such as NaC1, and is different for different salts (Fig. 1). Conductivity can even decline with a further increase in concentration, e.g., if additional salt is little dissociated but ties up some of the free water and/or causes an increase in viscosity. In solutions containing more than one salt, the contribution of one salt to the total conductivity depends not only on the fractional concentration of this same salt, but also on the concentration of all other solutes. A perfect method would give the conductivity or resistivity of a solution as a function of the concentrations of all solutes present. This is so complicated as to be impractical, and a simpler method must be found which is of acceptable accuracy. "In a study of the chemistry and pathology of chronic benzene poisoning, which was conducted cooperatively by the United. States Bureau of Mines, the Barrett Co., and the producers of benzene, it was necessary to make quantitative determinatious of the abzorption, distribution, and: fate of benzene in the organism. Although methods for determining benzene in relatively large amounts were available no satisfactory method was found for removing and determining the small amounts that are present in the tissues or excretions after exposure to conditions which ultimately cause chronic poisoning. This no doubt accounts for the lack of information in the literature on this particular phase of benzene poisoning.The writers have found in work that will be described in a subsequent publication that the amounts of benzene present in the tissues and excretions under conditions of exposure which produce chronic benzene poisoning arc of the order of a fraction to a few milligrams per 100 grams of tissue. This report describes a method developed and found satisfactory for these determina¬tions.RÉSUMÉ OF PERVIOUS METHODSA method for the determination of benzene in tissue was developed by Joachimoglu. 5 In the Joachimoglu procedure the ground organs are mixed with water and acidified with diluted sulphuzic acid, and the benzene is distilled into a receiver containing carbon tetrachloride. The benzene is nitrated in the carbon tetrachloride, the carbon tetrachloride evaporated, the acid mix¬ture neutralized, and the dinitrobenzene extracted with ether. After removal of the ether the dinitrobeuzene is determined gravimetrically. Joachimoglu reports that this method is about 55 to 60 percent quantitative."

It is believed that sulfur and volatile matter contents in coals are the main intrinsic properties to cause the self-heating of coal. Their oxidation at lower temperatures than that of fixed carbon to initiate coal's self-heating should be quantified. This study is aimed to improve the previous mathematical model developed by the authors for studying the coal's propensity for spontaneous combustion. It enhances the model's ability to consider the effects of sulfur, volatile matter and moisture contents in the coal - three important factors affecting the coal's self-heating process. Sulfur exists in coal primarily in the form of pyrite which will be oxidized rapidly under suitable conditions. Volatile matters, higher in low rank coals, are more easily to be oxidized. Heat of water condensation provides initial energy for low temperature oxidation. Heat release rates for pyrite oxidation and moisture condensation are built in the model. Finally, the simulation results in terms of time versus temperature on pyrite oxidation and moisture condensation are validated with the adiabatic testing data respectively.

"The Irkutsk region is a raw material region. There are a lot of big enterprises for extraction and processing of oil, gas, coal, iron, gold and rock salt. Besides of it, refractory clays, limestone, mica, gypsum and talc are mined in the region. The most important type of mineral raw material is a gold. More than 8.5% of the total mining in the Russian Federation is extracted in Irkutsk region. It is about 0.7% of the world production. The environmental problems of mining and processing enterprises are a complex set of issues that requires of the searching of effective methods to be solved. One of the key environmental problems remains the reduction of waste generation and the introduction of environmentally safe waste management. After analysing different methods of environmental impact assessment it is established that the method of Life Cycle Assessment is one of the most effective methods for mining production. This method base? on the material balance of flows of raw materials, products and waste. The method of Life Cycle Assessment allows to identify the effects of environmental pollution under the influence of mining and processing at a quantitative level and to show real quantitative forecasts of the possibility of managing the flows of raw materials and waste.INTRODUCTION The Irkutsk region is a raw material region. Placer gold is extracted by more than 40 enterprises. In connection with this, there are many plans about a building of new and reconstruction of concentrating factories. Consequently, an increase in the volume of processing is expected. The main projects are the construction of a new mill of the Mining and processing plant GOK “Vysochaishy” with a capacity of 2.6 million tonnes of ore per year; the development of the “Uhakhan” gold-field - 23 km from the “Goltsa Vysochaishy” gold-field; the opening in the Bodaibo region the next parts of the gold-deposit ""Pervenets"". As the problem of inclusions in steel has become increasingly important, more and more attention has been paid to the source of the oxide inclusions in steel. In killed steels the oxide inclusions are traceable to the reaction of deoxidizers with the iron oxide dissolved in the steel during the refining period of the open-hearth heat. In a large class of steel known as "rimming steel" the action of the steel during solidification depends entirely on the gas evolved, and this evolution in turn is controlled by the amount of iron oxide in the liquid steel in the mold. It is therefore of great importance to be able to determine the amount of iron oxide dissolved in steel and to devise methods for the control of iron oxide in any class of steel. The object of the present investigation was to obtain a true value of the oxygen con-tent of liquid steel. If the steel has not been deoxidized, the greater percentage of the oxygen is present as iron oxide in solution.

Higher employer costs and increased employee benefits will result from the current sweeping revisions of the un-employment insurance system now receiving consideration before Parliament. The new legislation, the Un-employment Insurance Act, 1971, will substantially increase the unemployment insurance costs of many employers through an increase in the level of employer contributions -generally, employer contributions will go to 1.4 times employee costs -as well as by extending coverage to many classes of employees now exempt. Under the new legislation, executives, technicians, teachers, institutional workers and others will be covered, and eligible for the higher benefits which it provides. For the first time, absence from work because of illness or accident may qualify individuals for unemployment insurance benefits.

This paper is one of a series of presentations organized by the Conference of American Society of Civil Engineers with the goal of making significant progress toward an equitable and effective allocation of risks in construction undertakings among the principal parties - owner, contractor and designer. The role I have been assigned is principally one of identification of risk while others will devote greater attention to the allocation of these risks and the contractual arrangements necessary to properly make these allocations. Construction projects are joint undertakings by parties who bring different skills and interests toward a common effort, much as this conference does. A project is not an adversary proceeding and does not benefit from establishment of an adversary mode, as our lawyer friends seek in the resolution of legal issues. Accordingly, I urge upon this Conference the adoption of two basic precepts and guidelines as the criteria for sharing of the risks inherent in construction undertakings toward achievement through mutual effort the common goal of a successful project completed in the shortest time and at the least overall cost. These precepts are: (1) that all risks are rightfully the owners unless transferred to or assumed by another party for a fair compensation; and (2) that the principle guideline in determining whether a risk should be so transferred should be whether the receiving party has both the competence to fairly assess the risk and the expertise necessary to control or minimize it. The sponsors of the conference have provided certain guidelines to the authors. There is, however, no constraint in expressing one's bias and I suspect that my contractor's outlook may be inherent in my comments. The guidelines have suggested that I indicate whether the risks identified are ones that can or should be shared or borne by one party alone. In doing so, I will attempt to follow the precepts I have recommended.

Safety work in mining at the Andes Copper Mining Company, Potrerillos, Chile, is divided into three parts: (1) accident prevention, (2) fire prevention and protection, and (3) silicosis prevention and control. In the company's operations a steady campaign has been waged to reduce accidents and silicosis, and to prevent fires. In the following pages the safety record for the past twelve years will be examined and the methods explained by which the accident rate was reduced. Table 1 contains yearly data pertaining to the scale of the mining operations and the accident record. Block caving is used for all ore production and the tonnage mined has averaged 30,000 short tons per day for the past seven years. Table 2 classifies 44 fatal accidents which have occurred since 1935. The leading causes of accidental death are transportation of ore and use of explosives, followed in order by persons falling, falls of ground, and by asphyxiation. In the case of serious accidents, however, the greatest cause is falls of ground, followed, in turn, by ore transportation, persons falling, explosives, and asphyxiation. Accident Prevention The improvement of the safety record was obtained by a combination of many factors. In surveying the results at Andes for the past twelve years, it is possible to select some features of the present operation which have contributed to the accident record. The most important of these are: (1) good staff planning, (2) good equipment, (3) an alert safety organization, and (4) education and selection of the workmen. GOOD STAFF PLANNING As a result of good staff planning, the mine has good working conditions, namely, good ventilation, moderate temperatures and humidity, and good lighting. These factors not only reduce accidents but also improve efficiency. In haulage work, accidents have been reduced by having traffic move in a forward direction only. The latter makes possible a one-man train crew. Trains are centrally dispatched from loading drifts which are interconnected by signal lights, so that when a train in a lateral drift is given permission to move into a main line drift, a red light signals in all other lateral drifts in that area. Good track is maintained, and safety niches are required at all switch throws. Since safety niches were provided there have been no fatal or serious accidents at such points. All main line haulage drifts are illuminated by electric lights. Haulage drifts are kept clean. Adequate clearance has been provided between cars and between cars and the sides of the haulage drifts. The 4 1/2 ton Cranby type cars are equipped with roller bearings, and the 10 ton loconlotives with trolley shoes instead of wheels. These two features are responsible for improved ore haulage conditions and contribute to greater efficiency and safety.

In the froth flotation process the detrimental effect of slimes on the froth flotability of valuable minerals has long been known.1 Work by Aplan2 on the froth flotation of coal has shown that the presence of clay slimes causes loss in flotation selectivity, and recovery of combustibles. Obviously then the presence of clay slimes to any great extent in the froth cell feed in a coal preparation plant is undesirable. This problem is exacerbated in plants treating raw 600 um (28#) by zero material due to the variation in flotation with size. The net effect of this phenomenon in a bank of cells treating raw minus 600 µm (28#) material s that by the time adequate flotation of the coarsest size fractions has occurred the finer sizes are already producing undesirable high ash material, which often leads to unacceptable overall quality. Reduction in aeration rate and/or chemical addition to combat this, further decreases the flotation rate of the coarsest fraction leading to heavy losses of coarse low ash coal to the tailings. The above mentioned characteristics formed a key aspect of the fine coal circuitry design at Elk Run Coal Company in Sylvester, WV. The plant was designed to produce compliance steam coal (less than 1.20 lbs. S02/million b.t.u.) Desliming ahead of the froth flotation was included, as the slimes in the plant feed were clay rich, had very high ash levels, and low potential recovery. Lab testwork had also shown that poor selectivity would be expected if raw minus 600 um (28#) material was froth floated.

A thermistor probe has been developed to measure in situ temperature profiles underground. A full description of the probe is given. Data collected from the probe has been used to compare the actual profiles with those predicted from a finite element analysis using laboratory measured thermal properties of the different rock types. This comparison indicates the applicability of laboratory measured parameters in modeling the real conditions. Factors such as applied pressure, moisture content and anisotropy on laboratory measurements is discussed.

Oklahoma City is undergoing a replacement program for an existing 66in (1.675m) water pipeline that conveys raw water from Atoka Reservoir to the City. This pipeline currently crosses the Canadian River on elevated piers and is subject to flood hazards. To replace the existing pipeline and mitigate flood damage concerns, two parallel microtunnels will be constructed below the river channel. Access is from construction shafts located near the midpoint of the tunnels; opposing drives are launched from each shaft. This geometry dictated shafts of significant depth – exceeding 120 ft. (37m). To accommodate the casing pipe segments and microtunneling machines, a minimum shaft diameter of approximately 34 ft. (10.4m) was required. Due to the difficult geologic setting, a reinforced secant pile compression ring is specified by contract in the top 70 ft. (21.3m) of these construction shafts to provide a very low permeability support system.

"A load transfer program AXPILE was developed for simulation of the loadmovement characteristics of socketed piles of the Mumbai reg ion. This program used empirical relationships for ultimate shaft resistance at pile-rock interface recommended by Zhang and Einstein (1998). According to their recommendation, ultimate shaft resistance at pile-rock interface is related to the square-root of uniaxial compressive strength of intact socket material by a parameter C, which ranges from 0.4 for smooth sockets to 0.8 for rough sockets. Results of three instrumented pile load tests were compared with the AXPILE generated results. The comparison of analytical and field estimates of the unit shaft resistance confirm the recommendations of Zhang and Einstein (1998) on the unit side shear parameter c,, which was found to be in the range of 0.35 to 0.67.INTRODUCTIONInstrumented pile load tests were carried out on the test piles at the Bandra-Worli sea link project in Mumbai city of western India. High capacity socketed piles were required to take up loads from the superstructure. Hence, in addition to the available toe resistance, an accurate measurement of the shaft resistance in socket portion was desired. The instrumented load tests incorporated Osterbergcell (0-cell) assisted by strain gauge instrumentation to estimate the shaft resistance mobilization in the socket portion.AXPILE load transfer program was developed for load-movement simulation of socketed piles (Basarkar, 2004). The load transfer algorithm based on Coyle and Reese (1966) was incorporated in this program, which used empirical correlations and functions to account for load transfer in piles through shaft and toe resistance.This paper compares the computed unit shaft resistance from the AXPILE program with the measured values recorded from the instrumented pile load test."

ONE of the morning sessions at the recent Annual Meeting was devoted to a Symposium on ways and means to expedite geological investigation, and also to promote greater prospecting activity, in Canada. It will be recalled that at the 1940 Annual Meeting, held in Winnipeg, a paper(l) prepared by Dr. G. A. Young, Chief Geologist of the Geological Survey, was presented, and was followed by a Symposium on Geological Investigations in Canada(2). On that occasion, the participants were in the main geologists, and they included the directors or other officials of each of the Provincial departments or bureaus of mines. At the Montreal meeting, the subject was discussed mainly from the point of view of the mining industry. The following pages present, in somewhat summarized form, the several contributions to that discussion.-ED. DR. J. J. O'NEILL(3), who was to have opened the Symposium, was unfortunately prevented through illness from attending the meeting. He had intended outlining the main features of his paper on The Exploitation and Conservation of Mineral Resources in a Balanced Development of Canada, presented at the last annual meeting of the Royal Society of Canada( 4). In his absence, DR.J. A. DRESSER presented a summary of the paper.
