The Line Creek Mine is operated by Crows Nest Resources Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of Shell Canada Resources Limited. It is located approximately 25 km north of Sparwood in southeast British Columbia (refer to figure 1). The Line Creek coal deposit is part of the Upper Elk Coalfield in the East Kootenays. The coal is a medium volatile, low sulfur, bituminous coal and is used as a coking coal. Coal close to the outcrop is typically of low F.S.I. and is processed for thermal use. The present pits have a total coal reserve of 30 million clean tonnes and is a multi-bench, open-pit operation. The coal is recovered by front shovel and backhoe combination, and hauled to the plant with a fleet of 120-tonne and 40-tonne capacity trucks. Line Creek is unique in that it can simultaneously treat both metallurgical and thermal coal in separate processing facilities (refer to figure 2). Run-of-mine coal is delivered to the truck dump. The plus 50 mm material is scalped off and reduced to minus 50 mm in two rotary breakers. The raw coal is then conveyed to one of five, 5000-tonne capacity, silos. Typically one silo is used for thermal coal and four for metallurgical coal (refer to figure 3).

The formation of elemental sulfur on the surface of sphalerite in aqueous systems was investigated. Hallimond tube flotation tests showed that unoxidized sphalerite did not float well without a collector. Flotation recoveries of greater than 95 percent were obtained without the use of a collector or frother after the sphalerite had been reacted with oxygen under pressure and water at pH 2.8 at room temperature. High flotation recoveries also resulted when sphalerite was reacted in acidic solutions in the presence of platinum sponge, titanium sponge, 316 stainless steel, copper turnings, or [10-5M++]. Conditions which produced high flotation recoveries of sphalerite yielded contact angles of 37° to 40° and also produced elemental sulfur. The increase in elemental sulfur on the surface of sphalerite was detected by elemental sulfur extraction with petroleum ether, electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis (ESCA), and the electron beam microprobe. The quantity of elemental sulfur formed was insufficient to be detected by infrared or Raman spectroscopy, or by the optical microscope or by the scanning electron microscope. An electrochemical type reaction for the production of elemental sulfur in acidic solutions was proposed. The cathodic reduction of oxygen was the slow step which needed to be catalyzed. A chemical type reaction which produced H2S rather than elemental sulfur was evident in non-oxidizing conditions.

"INTRODUCTION The float-and-sink test 5/6/ is generally the first test used in determining the washing characteristics of coal. The simplest form of the test is that of using one solution of such specific gravity that the test sample is separated into ""float"" and ""sink"" fractions. In practice, however, a series of solutions is used, and the sample is separated into a number of fractions of a definite specific-gravity range. Analyses of a series of fractions of this type are often referred to as the ""specific-gravity analysis,"" and are of great value in the selection, construction, and operation of commercial washing equipment.The test is rather simple to use, provided a number of conditions are recognized and as many as possible held constant, such as:1. In laboratory testing, two types of solution are available -Aqueous solutions of calcium and zinc chlorides.Mixtures of organic liquids such as carbon tetrachloride, benzene, gasoline, bromoform, etc.2. Absorption of the solution by the coal,3. Solvent action of the solution toward the coal.4. Constancy of specific gravity during the test is affected by temperature changes, dilution, and evaporation.5. Personal technique of the test, such as the time the coal is in the liquid, rate of adding the sample to the liquid, stirring, time of draining, etc.6. Moisture content of the coal as tested."

Introduction The Author As the pail of smoke and wartime destruction gradually rises from the surface of the earth, from all countries, statesmen assemble to discuss and prepare pacts and treaties which are designed to, once more, bring people of all nations to understand each other and live in harmony. Scientists and engineers throughout the world are also undergoing a drastic reconversion in their ideas and objectives. No longer do they think only in terms of destruction and twist their brains to develop more devastating weapons or to surpass production records of war machinery. They have turned their eyes and ambitions to more pleasant tasks and are taking stock of wartime developments in materials, fabricating procedures, and equipment, many of which had been carefully shrouded with a veil of secrecy, and are applying their new knowledge to the fabrication or improvement of the tools of peace. The next few years will see the gradual elimination of scores of substitutes and makeshifts, expedients which the constantly changing law of supply and demand' under wartime stress necessitated. The universal search for satisfactory substitutes, however, has resulted in a general awakening of plant engineers to the possibilities of materials with which they were relatively inexperienced, with the result that, in many instances, what was considered a substitution at the outset turned out to be more satisfactory than the original material, and, in reality, can be considered a worthwhile development. Not only have materials been explored, but existing fabricating processes have been reviewed, and others, built around the properties and characteristics of new materials, created.

The Department of the Interior has recently investigated the atmospheric conditions in tunnels of the Union Pacific Railroad in Utah and Wyoming , by observations made from the cabs of freight locomotives . This work was conducted by the Bureau of Mines at the request of , and in cooperation with , the Union Pacific Railroad Co .. and was brought about by several accidents to members of engine crews while passing through tunnels , from pollution of the tunnel air by exhaust gases from freight locomotives . The object was to determine the cause of gassing accidents , by examining into composition of the air in locomotive cabs while passing through railroad turmels ; to learn the effect of these conditions on the engine crew; and to provide a means of protection for the men so exposed . Gas samples and temperature readings taken in the cabs of locomotives were used in studying the atmospheric conditions to which the locomotive crews were exposed . The symptoms and the physiologica effects produced in men exposed to the atmospheres encountered were studied . The pulse rates and body temperatures were taken , and the determinations of the carbon monoxide content of the blood were made . Various methods for the prevention of gassing and for the protection of men therefrom were considered and tested , among which were the use of mechanical devices for deflecting the smoke away from the engine cab, and the use of various types of gas masks and breathing apparatus . While this investigation is a part of the safety work of the Bureau of Mines in connection with hazards from atmospheres containing carbon monoxide ( CO ) , the results are of particular value to railroads operating steam locomotives through tunnels , and are also valuable to other industries where atmospheres having poisonous gases or of a high temperature and humidity may be present . Lithium is a key component for future electric vehicle batteries and energy storage. The future availability of lithium to meet the growing demands remains in question. Around 60% of lithium resources exist in the form of continental brines. Traditional methods to recover lithium from brines use solar concentration with precipitation and have found limitations in lithium extraction due to interference of Mg in high Mg/Li brines. Thus, there is a need for highly selective adsorbents. Recently, spinel structured delithiated lithium manganese oxides have demonstrated promising results. However, due to the small particle sizes, it is economically difficult to recover the adsorbents and thereby limits industrial applications. In our work, LiMn2O4 ion sieve was synthesized and immobilized on diatomaceous earth. Fundamental adsorption studies were carried out in lithium buffer solutions to understand the nature of adsorption and kinetics. The adsorbents were also tested for recycle stability, as well as recovery of lithium from Great Salt Lake water samples.

This paper presents the unique design and construction challenges for the Technoparc Station, located in downtown Montreal as a part of Réseau Express Métropolitain (REM), a light rail rapid transit system. The station is located 15 m below the street with rock-bearing secant pile wall as the primary structural system working as both the retaining and gravity structure. The paper highlights the challenges related to the support of excavation structure, invert slab resisting high hydrostatic forces, waterproofing tightness etc. It also focuses on the importance of Building Information Modeling (BIM) in underground tunneling projects for effective coordination, clash-free, optimized design and costs.

San Antonio has experienced sustained growth for decades, putting increased pressure on existing wastewater infrastructure. In June 2013, San Antonio Water System (SAWS) reached a Consent Decree agreement that requires significant improvements to the wastewater system over a 10-year period to reduce Sanitary Sewer Overflows. One of the critical projects was the W-6 Upper Segment Tunnel project to reduce sanitary sewer overflows on an existing sewer main running through Lackland Airforce Base. The replacement project consisted of a new tunnel nearly 29,000 LF of primarily 104" FRP. The project also includes nine shafts and multiple trenchless crossings to make near surface connections to the new works.

1 Triton Square was originally a six-storey building with a one-level basement located within a commercial development near Euston, London. It was designed and constructed in the 1990s and the foundation scheme comprised straight shafted London Clay piles arranged singly beneath columns. The scheme added three storeys and a five-storey infill in the central atrium area to increase the building floorplate by 70% and maintained the usability of the basement space. As the loads to support the additional floorplate area were greater than the capacity of the existing foundations, an optimised strengthening scheme of small diameter piles installed within the existing basement and a slender retro-fitted raft was installed to augment the existing piles. The re-use and strengthening of almost all of the existing foundations enabled re-use of a very high proportion of the superstructure and in approximately 35,000 tonnes of concrete and 1,900 tonnes of reinforcement and structural steelwork being re-used. The structural embodied carbon for the refurbished building scheme is estimated at an average of 136 kgCO2e/m2, achieving a Structural Carbon Rating Scheme (SCORS) “A” rating with components detailed in the paper.

Paper presented at Mineralisation in the Caledonides, the Mike Gallagher memorial meeting held in Edinburgh, 27-28 June 1996. The synorogenic, mafic Ordovician intrusion comprises orthopyroxene-rich xenoliths and mafic-ultramafic cumulates with low-grade pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite and pentlandite mineralisation. Despite abundant textural, mineralogical and O isotope evidence for significant assimilation of country rocks, S isotopes indicate only a modest uptake and suggest that mineralisation is dominated by magmatic sulphur. The preferred explanantion is that the magma was close to S saturation on emplacement. Uptake of elements such as Si and O led to early crystallisation of orthopyroxene, resorption of olivine and early segregation of a sulphide liquid. Post-magmatic interaction with a high-temperature, surface-derived fluid, whose movement may have been controlled by regional shear zones, reset biotite and whole-rock O isotope values but not those of orthopyroxene. This model identifies the presence of olivine-rich rocks and evidence of extensive assimilation as guides to prospectivity

The characterisation of rock fracture networks is an important component of rock engineering applications involving stability assessment or fluid flow analysis. However, the derivation of a reliable rock fracture model remains a very challenging problem in practice. This paper describes a Bayesian framework, in the form of Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) simulation, for the construction of such a model. Model conditioning using different data sources is discussed including seismic events recorded during hydraulic fracture stimulation, rock face fracture mapping data and downhole geophysical survey data. The freeware FracSim3D is used for the simulations.

In recent years more emphasis has been placed on the control of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) emissions from mining diesel equipment. Worldwide, diesel engine regulations to control emission and protect the environment are also driving the development of the diesel engine technology to reduce oxides of nitrogen NOx (Nitric oxide, NO + NO2). NOx are toxic gases produced in mines during the operation of diesel equipment. Most of the diesel equipment used in underground operations are equipped with Diesel Oxidization Catalysts (DOCs) designed to reduce carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrocarbons (HC). The effects of DOCs on NO2 production from diesel powered equipment is not well understood. DOCs do not alter NOx concentration, but may promote the oxidization of engine exhaust NO to the more toxic NO2, thus increasing the undesirable NO2 exposure of workers in the mine environment. In 2012, the ACGIH reduced the NO2 TLV concentration value from 3 ppm to 0.2 ppm. Vale and CanmetMINING have been involved in several research projects to reduce diesel emissions exposure to workers. One aspect of the current program is to determine the effects of in-use DOCs on NO2 production. Several in-use DOCs taken from mining equipment were selected for testing in the laboratory using ISO 8178-C1 and mine LHD transient test cycles. The paper presents the laboratory test results and effects of DOCs on NO2 production. The results indicate significant reductions in CO concentration, by over 77%, while increases in NO2 varied from 46% to 315% based on the ISO 8178-C1 8-mode steady state test cycle. The mine LHD transient test cycle showed the same pattern, although the magnitude of CO reduction was less. Consequently, it is recommended the use of only those DOCs that have been properly evaluated and shown not to significantly increase NO2 emission in the environment be used on mine equipment.

THE remarks of Dr. Rathbun in his address of welcome render it unnecessary that I dwell either upon the history or aims of the National Museum, and enable me to proceed at once with a brief descriptive outline of the Department for which I am responsible, and this with particular reference to that division devoted to applied geology. The amount of geological material brought together prior to 1876, under the various Congressional acts quoted, was, though valuable, comparatively small. It consisted mainly of the collections made by Professor J. D. Dana and his assistants during the Wilkes Exploring Expedition; by the various geologists accompanying the surveys of the Pacific railroads in 1854-55; the Surveys West of the 100th Meridian under the direction of the Engineering Corps of the Army; the United States geological surveys under direction of Dr. F. V. Hayden ; and the various Land Office surveys. Prior to 1873 there were no paid assistants to care for these collections. They were studied, if studied at all, by " collabrators," so-called, several of whom had offices and even sleeping apartments in the Smithsonian Institution. In the list of these collaborators are found such names as Conrad, Cope, Gabb, Leidy, Lesquereux, Meek, and Newberry. The building now occupied by the National Museum was designed primarily to make room for the great mass of material secured in 1876 at the close of the Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia. As completed in 1880, it afforded opportunity for expansion and incidental organization on much more practical basis than had previously existed. This found expression in the creation of numerous departments with salaried officials to take charge of the various collections. With the appointment of Dr. George W. Crandallite and millisite in Christmas Island 'B' and 'C' phosphate ores are rapidly decomposed by sodium hydroxide solutions at about 80QC. As these phosphates generally contain less than 1% silica, an alkaline extraction process can be designed, in which up to 95% of the sodium hydroxide used, may be recycled. The insoluble residue consists of an impure, highly reactive apatite, which in pot trials, has given good responses as a direct application fertiliser; alternatively this residue can be underacidulated to give a granular product with fertiliser potential. The hot leaching solution contains up to 95% of the alumina and approx- imately half of the phosphate from the original ore. Simple crystallising techniques have been developed on a laboratory-scale to use this leaching solution for producing smelter-grade alumina and detergent-quality trisodium phosphate. As the demand for detergents is limited, an investigation was made of the reaction between trisodium phosphate and slaked lime, derived from a high-grade New Zealand limestone occurring near Oamaru. The product is calcium phosphate, containing up to 40% P205, and less than 0.2% each of iron, aluminium and fluorine, and it should be a useful raw material for phosphoric acid manufacture. A preliminary economic evaluation of the whole process looks promising, And warrants further investigations, including pilot-plant work.

Lead, zinc, copper, silver, cadmium and many other heavy metals which are potentially hazardous if released into the environment in wastewater discharges have been of considerable concern to governmental agencies, industry and the general public. In response to this concern, an interdisciplinary research team at the University of Missouri has been funded by the National Science Foundation-RANN program to study trace contaminants associated with the production of lead for the past eight years. Seven modern mines in close proximity to two lead smelters in the forested Ozarks of Southeast Missouri are the largest source of lead in the world and in 1976 alone produced 504,095 short tons of lead, 82% of the United States total production. This new and rapid industrial development in a sparsely populated. rural forest region has offered a unique opportunity for studying the impact of trace metals and for developing improved techniques to control detrimental effects. Research on the wastewater discharges and two methods of biological and recycle control are discussed in this paper. Although the two mine-mill complexes investigated in this study have many similarities, the differences between the two are substantive and warrant separate examination.

As productivity in coal extraction demands increase in underground coal mines, the industry is faced with finding new ways to support production without jeopardising safety. In modern mines the capacity and scale of longwall coal extraction has steadily increased to a point that support processes are failing to keep pace. In particular, roadway development is continually placed on the critical path of activities which maintain mine production, so any inefficiency in this area is quickly exposed. Original equipment manufacturers are under immense pressure to modify their machines to be more interconnected with each other, with machine communication and logistical sharing of space becoming a known requirement. This paper looks at the changing trends in mining practice, analysing available technology as well as currently emerging research into hard automation and discusses the need to integrate machinery and processes in order to see increases in productivity and safety.

"The purpose of this project was to design the Electrical Service Platform (ESP) for the Cape Wind Offshore Wind Farm. The ESP structure comprises two primary parts: the topside platform housing the electrical equipment and the two jacket substructures providing foundation support to the platform. The topside is supported only by the two inner legs of each jacket. The site water depth is relatively shallow and the seabed comprised of loose sediment subject to severe local scour up to 18 feet. The piles are designed for local scour, storm conditions, vessel impact, ice loads and pile installation fatigue. This paper focuses on the design and construction aspect of this project.PROJECT DESCRIPTIONBackgroundThe Cape Wind project will be located in Nantucket Sound between Cape Cod on the Massachusetts mainland (northeastern coast of the USA) and the Islands of Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket (Fig. 1). The project is to be sited on Horseshoe Shoal, about equal distances from the mainland and the two islands. The project will produce 75% of the electricity used on Cape Cod and the Islands of Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket with zero pollution emissions and resulting in the reduced operations, fuel consumption and pollution emissions from the fossil fuel power plants in the region. The wind farm, if constructed per plan, is expected to be America’s first offshore wind farm.The wind farm will consist of an array of 130 Siemens 3.6-megawatt offshore wind turbines with a combined production capacity of 468-megawatts. The offshore wind turbine towers will be bolted onto the transition pieces supported by monopile foundations driven into seabed. The power from the 130 wind turbine generators will be delivered to the Electrical Service Platform (ESP) by an array of up to 14 seabed conductors."

This investigation is concerned with the optimization of ultrafine grinding of solids. It is focused on a dynamic classifier for recovering the fine fraction, for automatic recycling of the oversize particles and for reducing power consumption. Power consumption plays a major role in these energy intensive processes and depends on several parameters such as nature of the solid, degree of fineness of the finished product and, above all, grain size of the feed. This study indicates the optimal conditions for a dynamic classifier, that is, geometric characteristics of the apparatus and its capacity, inlet air flow rate and dimensions of the classification circuit. It is also shown that a mean grain diameter (dm) of about 2.00 µm with top size (dmax) of 50 µm can be achieved with an imperfection value of below 0.40 and energy consumption of 215 kWht-1.
