A geostatistical approach is proposed for the design of infill drilling programs. The method is consisted of three major steps: developing geological favorability models, delineating mineralization and ore envelopes, and classifying reserves or resources. Geological modeling aims at developing favorable geological zones in which drilling is designed. Modeling mineralization and ore envelopes establishes criteria on potential blocks to be drilled. Top target blocks should be those included within ore envelopes. The framework of resource categories includes five types: probable reserves, indicated reserves, indicated resources, possible resources, and barren. Indicated reserves or resources are the top priority to be drilled for the definition of minable reserves. Possible resources may be considered as targets for further exploration. The algorithms involved in the analysis include indicator favorablity analysis, ordinary kriging, and indicator kriging. A case study presented here involves a gold deposit of Carlin type. The deposit was delineated by a sparse drilling program with 230 feet of average spacing. The infill drilling program designed by the new method suggests a significant reduction on the number of holes from a regular-grid infill drilling pattern.

THE DEFINITION of the continental margin, as considered in this paper, is in the broad sense: " ... those provinces of the continents and of the oceans which are associated with the boundary between these two first-order features of the earth" (Heezen et aL, 1959, p. 17). The provinces in the area under con-sideration are: the Continental Shelf, the Continental Slope and the Continental Rise. The Continental Shelf extends from the shoreline to the shelf break, which lies at approximately the 200-meter isobath through-out the region (except north of the Grand Banks, where the break may be defined more properly by the 400-meter isobath). The Continental Slope and Rise occur between the shelf break and the 4,000-meter isobath. (The last figure was somewhat arbitrarily selected for the purpose of this paper.) The Atlantic Continental Margin as thus defined extends along the eastern coast of Canada from the International Boundary in the Gulf of Maine northward to approximately the 60°N latitude off the coast of Labrador. The area of study amounts to at }east 500,000 square miles -an area roughly equivalent to 13 per cent of Canada's total land surface.

The Southern Alps of New Zealand and the mountains of Taiwan are both young transpressive orogens characterised by rapid uplift and exhumation, high heat flow and vigorous surface processes. Comparing and contrasting the two provides an ideal framework through which to explore the structural and lithological controls on fluid and gold mobility during collisional deformation. Both have two fluid flow systems centred about their drainage divide with shallow topographically-driven meteoric water above a deeper flow system dominated by mineralising rock-exchanged fluids. Despite similar tectonic settings, the distribution of heat flow, hot springs and veins in the two orogens are different. Taiwan has higher heat flow, distributed hot springs and localised veining whereas the Southern Alps have a narrow heat flow anomaly, localised warm springs and widespread veining. We use three-dimensional numerical models to evaluate key parameters that affect fluid flow and gold mineralisation. Models show that differences in crustal strength and thickness affect the locus, scale and rate of crustal fluid flow and hence influence gold deposition at a variety of scales. We explore how surface topography can lead to localised changes in the stress state, facilitating the switching of principal stresses and hence vein orientations.CITATION:Upton, P and Craw, D, 2015. THE Sub-province of Benguet is in the North Central part of the Island of Luzon. Baguio, the capital, is situated on a piateau 5000 ft. above sea level, and is the main health resort of the Philippines. It is rapidly becoming the favorite resort for the China Coast as well, and has many miles of beautiful, curving drives with nearly every pine-covered knoll surmounted by a summer home. The United States Army has a recreation post here, known as Camp John Hay, with a well-equipped hospital, and there is a Country Club with a good golf course adjacent. The weather during the winter months and until late spring is ideal. The business center consists mainly of Chinese and Japanese stores, several hotels, and a large public market, in which are displayed all of the vegetables of the temperate zone, which are flown near Baguio, and many tropical and other products brought up from below. This district is reached from the Coastal Plain either by the old Benguet road built in 1904 by the United States Government, or by the Naguilian road, built some years later. The former is now a toll road, with a line of stages operating over it to and from Des Mortes in connection with the government-owned rail- road. Auto travel from Manila is also along this road, the trip from Manila to Baguio requiring about seven hours, following up the great valley north of Manila for nearly 150 miles to the lower end of the Benguet road, and thence to Baguio, 25 miles. This is an interesting, scenic trip; the road is especially famous for the zig zags where it climbs out of the canyon of the Bued River to the plateau. In the September number of the National Geographic Magazine, a fine aerial picture of this road, as well as of other interesting points in various parts of the Philippines, appears. Freight for the district is taken in mainly over the Naguilian road connecting with the railroad at Bauang. This route follows the ridges of the mountain slope with broad vistas and views of the coast.

Modelling and optimisation of the power draw of large SAG mills are important due to the large power draw which modern mills require (5~10 MW). The cost of grinding is the single biggest cost within the entire process of mineral processing. Traditionally, modelling of the mill power draw has been done using empirical models. Although these models are reliable, they cannot model mills and operating conditions, which are not within the model database boundaries. Also, due to their static nature, the impact of the changing conditions on the power draw, within the mill, cannot be deter-mined using such models. Despite advances in computing power, on-line modelling of large plant scale mills could be a time consuming task. On the other hand, using on-line parameters for model-ling, result in more reliable control of SAG mill without performing any more costly tests. In this paper, SAG mill power draw is modelled using neural network approach. Six inputs, namely: solid percent, two bearing pressures, noise, recycle and feed rate were used to model the power draw. The produced model shows an acceptable correlation coefficient, R2 =0.9623.

"The Highway 53 relocation project in Virginia, Minnesota, involves construction of a very tall bridge across a currently inactive iron ore mine pit. The inactive pit is partially flooded and serves as the community’s drinking water source. The 1,132-ft long new bridge is a three-span, plate girder structure. Two intermediate, approximately 200-ft tall piers are located within the pit.The foundations for the two piers consist of groups of 30-in diameter piles which, despite the contradiction in terms, are essentially very large micropiles. Extremely challenging and highly variable subsurface conditions exist at the site, ranging from uncontrolled iron ore mine waste fill to some of the hardest rock on earth that can also be highly fractured and abrasive. Despite the conditions, large diameter (30-in) micropile foundations up to 175 ft deep were successfully installed using down-the-hole hammer methods and full-length permanent casing under an extremely aggressive construction schedule.Full-scale foundation load testing using the Statnamic rapid loading method was also conducted in support of the design and construction but under a separate pre-design phase contract. This paper describes the unique aspects of this foundation project, including design, construction, and load testing of the large micropiles.INTRODUCTION AND BACKGROUNDIn 1960, a segment of Trunk Highway 53 (TH-53) in Virginia, Minnesota, was built on land owned by iron ore mining interests. As part of the roadway easement agreement, Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) was to be given notice three years prior to termination of the easement. In 2010, MnDOT received notice that the mining interests wished to access the ore. Through negotiations in 2010, MnDOT and the mining interests agreed to a 2017 date for abandoning the existing section of roadway. During this period, MnDOT needed to procure project funding, satisfy environmental permitting requirements, and acquire new right-of-way to permanently reroute TH-53 and keep it open to traffic. This was no easy task due to the existing mine pits surrounding the area.The E-2 alignment option shown in Fig. 1 was ultimately selected for the rerouted highway in 2014. The new highway segment includes a three-span bridge across the currently inactive Rouchleau Mine Pit. The inactive pit is partially flooded and serves as Virginia’s drinking water source. The 1,132- ft long new bridge is a three-span, plate girder bridge. Two intermediate approximately 200-ft tall piers are located within the pit. Fig. 2 is a conceptual rendering of the bridge."

This is true with respect to the production of Cold rolled Annealed, Galvanized, Continuously Annealed, Galvalume, CRGO, CRNGO and Colour coated coils which need total care in handling, tracking and dispatch. Understanding the above needs precisely JSW, Vijayanagar, India, has rightly gone in for a total automatic Yard management system and ASRS wherein the coils are handled as much as possible automatically in cradles without any damage insuring the receipt of coils to the customer as was produced. This CRM 2 has been commissioned and is operating with maximum automation with least manpower and max productivity with assured quality and safety. Pesmel OY Finland had the opportunity to Design, Supply and Commission this system which is first in the country and this technical paper analyses the above project as a case study enlisting the sound technical aspects as well as emphasis on the techno economics with assured ROI (Return on investment) and enhanced efficiency.

MANY producers of by-product coke have spent considerable time and given considerable thought to the use of a substitute for low-volatile coal as an admixture with high-volatile coking coal for charging high-temperature by-product coke ovens. Generally speaking, there are two principal reasons for this, one being occasioned by the lack, in certain localities, of low-volatile coal delivered at a cost sufficiently low to permit its use, and another being the desirability of finding a substitute product with a delivered cost lower than the cost of the low-volatile coal. It was for the first of these reasons that the Colorado Fuel and Iron Corporation was particularly interested in this subject. This paper deals with the experimental work and the results obtained by that company in producing and using low-temperature char. OVERCOMING DEFECTS IN COKE FROM COLORADO COALS Colorado coking coals are all of the high-volatile type and were all laid down during he Cretaceous period, which makes them something like 80 million or so years younger, geologically, than eastern coals. They behave, when coked alone, something like the Pittsburgh-seam coals. They make a very brittle, highly cross-fractured, fingery coke of fair shatter value but quite low in resistance to abrasion. Mixed with a low-volatile coking coal such as Pocahontas or certain Oklahoma coals, they make a coke that is equal to virtually any of the eastern cokes. The inferior quality of Colorado coke has long been recognized, and a considerable amount of time, effort and money has been spent upon investigations of means for improving its physical properties. While it has been found that some improvement in quality of coke can be secured by the adjustment and control of such variables as pulverization, moisture content, oven temperature and bulk density of charge, and through the addition of certain inert materials such as pulverized coke breeze, pitch, high-volatile noncoking or semicoking coal, the benefits so gained have been comparatively small. There are no low or medium-volatile coking coals available within a reasonable freight-cost distance. Therefore a substitute for low-volatile coal was developed through low-temperature carbonization-or, more correctly speaking, through the partial devolatilization-of high-volatile coals. The blending of this lower volatile char with the high-volatile coking coal distinctly improves the quality of coke made from Colorado coal. There is nothing especially new about this idea. In 1908 a Japanese patent was taken out by Kotaro Shimomura, whose claim was: The method of making a nonfingery coke out of bituminous coals, without using natural coals of low-volatile matter; according to which a certain coal is heated at a temperature between about 300°C. and about 600°C. so as to leave about 15 to 25 per cent volatile matter in the coal; this coal is mixed with the

Although geostatistical techniques have been widely accepted as the standard methods for reserve calculations in the mining industry, the production data of many mines frequently differ from geostatistical estimations based on exploration and development drilling. The discrepancies in recovered metal amounts, commonly in the range between 10% and 30%, are related to different factors. Major causes vary from mine to mine. A common cause, however, is the ignorance of important geological constraints in reserve modeling. Three major factors appear to be related to such an unfortunate fact: 1) modelers are over-confident on geostatistical techniques, 2) it is difficult to establish geological models, and 3) mine schedules are too tight to allow detailed geological modeling work. Defining mineralization envelopes has been a major effort in geological modeling. Past experiences have showed that geological modeling is much mo~ demanding than the choice of sophisticated kriging estimators. Since building envelopes for complex ore bodies can be extremely tedious and time-consuming, computerized approaches are badly needed for mine modelers. A comprehensive procedure reported here is referred to as probability-assigned constrained kriging (PACK), which includes a built-in method for defining 3-d mineralization envelopes. The modeling technique is fast and accurate for complex precious metal deposits. The technique is demonstrated on a gold deposit. The estimation results are compared with blast-hole based production panels, showing that the estimated tonnage is 2.2% larger than the actual production and the average grade is 2.6% lower.

Back in 1970 Congress passed the National Mining and Minerals policy Act, which had as one of its basic tenets to rely on a strong and stable private minerals industry for the development and production of our mineral resources. Since then, a substantial amount of legislation has been introduced that impacts on the minerals industry. Although most of the bills proposed are not passed into law, each bill affecting minerals and mining is given careful review by the Bureau of Mines. Comment is forwarded with the object of being helpful to legislators by providing our assessment of the probable impact of each bill proposed along with suggestions to improve them. Actually few bills introduced become law. For example, in the 93rd Congress 4,260 bills were introduced in the Senate and 17,690 in the House. In the final accounting there were passed 123 private laws and 649 public, 3 percent of the bills introduced. There would be little merit here in attempting to analyze each mineral-related bill that was proposed. Many are similar and aim at making a certain aspect of our minerals activity fit needs. So, to simplify the task the many bills have been grouped by subjects. Slide 1 shows the principal topics and the number of related bills introduced. Putting it altogether, there are 26 principal subjects and almost 200 bills. And these numbers are probably off somewhat, as this accounting was made early in December.

"SUMMARYAs a result of the increased demand for fluorspar during the war, the Bureau of Mines investigated numerous fluorspar properties in the southern Illinois field, which is centered in Rosiclare. Among these the J. J. Shelby 40-acre tract on the western edge of the district presented favorable factors that caused it to be chosen /or exploration.H. G. Spiller, formen lessee of the property, had explored the Shelby vein by means of an adit level and winze, and showed it to contain goad values in zinc and fluorspar at the depth explored. A diamond-drill hole with which Spiller explored the vein 78 feet southwest of the winze, however, failed to cut ore. After studying the field evidence, the Bureau concluded that the vein merited further exploration, particularly at a depth of about 440 feet, where the Fredonia limestone would form the foot-wall of the vein and the hanging wall would be the competent Cypress sandstone.Between October 17, 1944, and March 26, 1945, three diamond-drill holes were bored for a total inclined depth of 1,592 feet. Holes 1 and spaced approximately 500 feet apart, explored the vein at 440 feet 4 below the surface. The economic mineralization existed in the vein where cut. Hole 3 cut the fault at approximately 300 feet below the outcrop but failed to find any vein matter except stringers of calcite with small amounts of pyrite."

"This paper contains description of research results of technology development for copper recovery from weathered tails of iron processing plant. The predominant host mineral that contains valuable component is chalcopyrite occurring in its free form and in associations with ore and rock-forming minerals. Copper grade is 0.26-0.30%. Emulsion inclusions of chalcopyrite in pyrite and sphalerite were noted. Major problem is low copper recovery (30-35%) by flotation. When studying chalcopyrite in primary concentrate it was determined that the surfaces of many chalcopyrite grains are covered with oxide films which prevented collector attachment onto them. Second issue was deep association of chalcopyrite with pyrite and sphalerite. Sulfidizing reagent addition did not help to reach the required level of copper recovery to concentrate. In the result of research performed the technological flowsheet was developed including preliminary treatment of head material in a special unit aiming at oxide films removal, followed by copper rougher flotation on head size tails, crude concentrate regrinding and a number of cleaner flotation operations. After the treatment of weathered tails according to the flowsheet developed, copper recovery to flotation concentrate became 71.53%, at 23.46% copper grade. The suggested technology allows one to solve the issue with treatment of technology-related copper-containing stockpile material, as well as to include the ores where copper is represented by sulfide minerals covered with oxide films into processing."

The Ernest Henry Mining (EHM) underground mine is situated adjacent to the Great Artesian Basin in North Queensland and within a fracture zone. Underground development commenced in February 2008 and has extended to approximately 1000 vertical metres below the surface.Groundwater has been encountered in numerous locations throughout the mine, predominantly on the eastern side of the orebody and often related to fault structures. Most of the groundwater encountered has been managed with conventional pumping systems; however, on occasions large water inflows have been encountered, which have had a significant impact on the planned development of the mine. Some of the intersections encountered had the potential to compromise the mine from a combination of high temperature (over 45°C), high pressure (3500 kPa) and high flows (50–100 L/s).This paper describes three case studies where significant water inflows were encountered and then controlled by the injection of cementitious grout into the rock mass. The case studies are the 1650 mid-shaft heading, the 1325 shaft access decline and the 1625 to 1475 fresh air rise (FAR) raise bore. Each case study includes a brief description of the event that occurred and the grouting equipment and techniques developed to enable mining to continue.The paper also describes the development of a hydrogeological map of the mine, the probe-hole regime used for high-risk headings and the required processes and systems to inject both cementitious grouts and polyurethane resin into the rock mass.CITATION:Purvis, T, Calverd, J and Greve, A-K, 2014. "The availability of fresh water to meet present and future needs in Ontario is of concern to an increasing number of people. Rain and snow are the source of our potable water and provide, on the average, some 180,-000 billion gallons of water annually. This amount is reduced to 94 billion gallons a day as a result of the evaporation and transpiration of water and our inability to construct the necessary reservoirs for capturing surplus stream flow.The water used for domestic, irrigation, public supply and industrial purposes amounts to some 7 billion gallons daily at present and will reach 21 billion gallons daily by the year 2000; however, only about one-fifth of the water used is actually consumed, and this, along with the possibilities of water re-use, improves the water supply picture still further.The need for adequate pollution control has accompanied industrial and urban expansion and is an important factor in the extent to which our surplus water is used. In the 10-year period since the formation of the Ontario Water Resources Commission, the cost of water and sewage works constructed in the Province has exceeded one billion dollars. A special effort is now being made to control the industrial pollution situation.Numerous federal and provincial agencies are engaged in hydrologie studies in the Province, providing in-formation of benefit to those involved with water resources management."

THE Lepanto Consolidated Mining Company is the largest copper producer in the Philippines, and the only one that makes a concentrate valuable principally for its copper; also, it has the only productive copper mine situated at considerable distance from the sea, and is the only one in the islands operating its own smelter. The Lepanto mine is in the Municipal District of Mankayan, sub-province of Benguet, near the heart of the Mountain Province of Northern Luzon. It is 165 km. from its shipping point at San Fernando, Province of La Union, on the shore of the China Sea. Elevations at the property range from 3200 to 4500 ft. The climate is very mild; temperatures are seldom below 50° or above 80°F. Annual rainfall approaches 170 in. and is mainly confined to a rainy season lasting from May to October. The months from December to April, inclusive, are usually extremely dry. This climatic pecularity entails the problems of landslides on the roads during the rainy season and water shortage during the dry season. The Mountain Trail, an improved rocksurfaced toll road maintained by the Commonwealth Government, gives access to the property. The 105 km. over this road may be traveled in about 4 ½ hr. during the dry season. Very few sections of the road are straight for more than 100 meters, and about one third of it is a one-way road controlled by gates. All freight for the property is delivered by the Manila Railroad Company to Bauang, La Union, 45 km. west of Baguio and at sea level, where it is picked up by freight trucks and hauled via Baguio to Lepanto. Granulated matte is hauled in bulk from Lepanto in four-ton lots on freight trucks to the storage bins at San Fernando. Freight rates from Bauang to the property amount to [P]8.oo per ton, and from the property to San Fernando the rate is [P]16.00 per ton. The company pays the road toll, [P] 1.00 per truck, each way. THE CAMP The company maintains a modern camp, well separated from the mine and reduction plant. Comfortable and sanitary living quarters, water, and light, as well as free medical service are provided all employees. A hospital staffed by a doctor and two nurses takes care of all medical treatment. Considering recreational facilities of great importance, the company has provided two tennis courts, two basketball courts, and badminton courts for employees. Bowling alleys and a motion picture theater are operated by the company, the profits being expended for other recreational purposes. "The slow-spreading Mid-Atlantic Ridge (MAR), with a length of ~1.26*104km (Bird, 2003), is the longest mid-ocean ridge on this plant. Separated by the large, left-stepping Equatorial fracture zones, it then be divided into two approximately equal-length parts: Northern Mid-Atlantic Ridge (NMAR, ~6292km) with an average spreading rate of 24mm/yr, and Southern Mid-Atlantic Ridge (SMAR, ~6332km) of 33mm/yr (calculated from PB2002 model, Bird, 2003). Previous works (e.g. Fouquet 1997, Hannington et al., 2011) suggest that slow-spreading ridge could support hydrothermal activities and further favorable for the development of extensive seafloor massive sulfide deposits (SMS). Unlike the NMAR for which large part has been explored for SMS (Hannington et al., 2011; Beaulieu et al., 2015), the SMAR is amongst the least hydrothermal explored spreading ridges until now (Haase et al., 2005, Beaulieu et al., 2015), though both of them show significant similarities in terms of spreading rate, ridge morphology, segmentation, etc. (Macdonald et al., 2001, Sandwell et al., 2014, Tucholke et al., 2008).Before this work, several hydrothermal cruises had been to SMAR since British and German programs starting in 2002, some hydrothermal fields, along with systematic geophysical data, were newly investigated, and types of geologic setting that can host hydrothermal activity were firstly identified (e.g. German et al., 2008; Haase et al.,2005; Haase et al.,2009; Devey et al.,2010; Schmidt et al.,2011).."

The utilization of natural gas in non-ferrous industries during smelting and refining stages of copper , aluminum, zinc and lead was studied. The total amount of nonelectrical energy consumed in the production of zinc, copper, lead and aluminium, are 96.5% ,93%,92%, and 6 % respectively. It is calculated that 9.45 wt %of air of stoichiometric amount can be substituted by natural gas to the total air input in the nonelectrical energy utilization processes. The results showed that the non electrical energy may be substituted to an amount of 71 % ,52 % ,35 % ,32 % ,and 26% ,in the production of lead, aluminium (plates, foils) copper, aluminium, zinc, respectivelly. Similar calculations are carried out in terms of energy in Btu for the total production of non-ferrous metals in the U.S. It shows that 51.866~106 millions of Btu of nonelectrical energy can be substituted by 54.58~106 cu. ft of natural gas. Finally, the substitution of non electrical energy in terms of equivalent coal energy is discussed. 1t is shown that total non electrical energy is equal to 1.852 million tones of coal .If this 1.852 million tones of coal is replaced by natural gas, a total savings of 22.14 million dollars are achieved. The total or partial substitution of coal by the natural gas in the existing industrial processes and modification of redesigning the processes is discussed.

During the 1998/99 Asian crisis Solid Energy's export revenues collapsed from over US$70M to under US$40M. Simultaneously, domestic market uncertainty led to decreases in volumes and prices. A major new underground mine was not technically viable, and was closed, and several other mines were marginal. Less than two years later, Solid Energy and its JV partner closed a second new underground mine. The company was in financial crisis, and reported an $86M loss for 1998/99. After refinancing with stringent workout conditions it still had minimal returns due to low prices, unaffordable transportation costs and huge unrealised FX losses as the NZ dollar fell 40 per cent in value. The obvious scenario was to æcash upÆ û complete extraction at remaining mines, sell off any viable parts of the business, pay off debt and wind the company down.In 2002 Solid Energy has completed its recovery. Although margins remain slim and volatile in both export and domestic markets, it is achieving record volumes and revenues. It has paid off its shareholder loan, has minimal remaining FX losses, and cashflow is allowing further mine and infrastructure development. The key to the turnaround has been implementation of rigorous planning, analysis and decision-making in all aspects of the business. The company has a comprehensive, rolling 20-year plan used annually to update rolling five year and annual business plans. Solid Energy augments strong line management operations with rigorous standards and processes for mine planning and development, operational decision-making, and functional support. Detailed, quantitative risk analysis is used in all aspects of the business and allows comprehensive integration of opportunity and risk management across all activities in the company.Coal mining is widely perceived as an æold-economyÆ industry. But, like other successful æold economyÆ companies, the information systems and management processes used by Solid Energy are as leading edge as any in the high-tech sector. They are the key to managing to add and sustain maximum value for a company that has access to coal resources sufficient for hundreds of years.

The Shagou deposit is located along NE-trending faults within the high-grade metamorphic basement of the Xiong’er Terrane in the Qinling orogenic belt. It is a large Ag-Pb-Zn deposit hosted in the Taihua Supergroup and has proven reserves of 1.54 Mt of ore with grades of 767 g/t Ag, 13.24 per cent Pb and 4.31 per cent Zn. The hydrothermal ore-forming process can be divided into early quartz-pyrite, middle quartz-polymetallic sulfides and late quartz-carbonate stages. Four types of fluid inclusions (ie pure carbonic, carbonic, pure aqueous and aqueous) can be distinguished in quartz. Fluid inclusion, hydrogen, oxygen and sulfur isotope systematics indicate that the ore-forming fluids are initially deeply sourced metamorphic water with meteoric water gradually mixed in the later stages. Sulfur isotope data show that the ore-forming fluids originated from both the Taihua Supergroup and the sedimentary successions of the Guandaokou and Luanchuan Groups (CSC) located to the south of the Machaoying Fault. A genetic model of the Shagou deposit is proposed as follows: CSC subducted northward along the Machaoying Fault beneath the Xiong’er Terrane during the Mesozoic collision between the North China Craton and South China Block. Subsequent dehydration resulted in the devolatilisation of fluids rich in CO2. These fluids migrated upwards, reacted with the Taihua Supergroup and formed the Shagou deposit.CITATION:Han, J-S, Yao, J-M and Chen, H, 2015.
