25th Julius Wernher memorial lecture given at Tunnelling '91, sixth international tunnelling symposium held in London, 14-18 April 1991. The title gives the lecturer a chance to share some of the lessons he has learnt in a lifetime of tunnelling and particularly in the last six years of his involvement with the Channel Tunnel and the International Tunnelling Association. These included: the difficulties of split contracts but the problems arising with Eurotunnel over the need to create a single owner to whom the banks could lend; the peripatetic nature of tunnellers who built London's underground in the 1960s and returned to build the Channel Tunnel from Egypt, Singapore, Hong Kong and Australia; the increasing requirement for strategic planning resulting in tunnels between European countries and the need for engineers to deal with decision-makers; EU work on harmonising regulations so that there need no longer be, for example, arguments over which regulations should be followed for temporary electrical equipment in the section of the UK tunnel that is technically in France; the huge improvements in safety standards and attitudes; the enormous increase in the scale of undertakings and individual contracts, with an accompanying change in attitudes to logistics; technological advances to cater for the high performance now required of equipment; and the rising importance of environmental issues. The main direction in the mechanisation in the mines of the Donbas and the USSR is long-face technology with complexes on the base of hydraulic supports. On the base of the 30 year old experience of exploitation of the coal clearing systems the serious data about the behaviour of the contained rock, display of underground pressure 'on longwalls and preparatory workings have been accumulated. Exploitation works in mines of the USSR are carried out at different depths: from 1000m to 1200m. There are 26 mines in Donbas, which exceed the depth of 1000m. It is the mines of Donbas, where is a rich experience of the exploitation of coal seams in various conditions. Besides, there are wide variations on the factors of the extraction thickness, depth of seam, angle of dip, occurrence of gas dynamics and others. In many scientific establishments, and in Donetsk Polytechnical Institute also, there are scientific research/results, which can be of interest for the coal mining countries.The volume of coal mining from longwall system-mechanised walls in Donbas became stable at the end of the 70s at level of 70 percent. All the efforts to increase this level have not given any notable results, not saying about the technical-economical data, which gradually deteriorate. It shows that positive progress in using the technology for the long walls is over and it is necessary to find new ways of mechanisation of coal winning.

The term bauxite was first used by O.P.A.P. Dufrenoy in 1845 for an ore which was discovered by Pierre Berthier in 1821 near the village of Les Beaux de Provence near Arles in southern France. His data suggested that this mineral was an alumina hydrate with two molecules of water. However, it was subsequently shown by thermal analysis that the mineral was a fortuitous mixture of the mono-hydrate and the tri-hydrate. Diaspore had been previously discovered in 1801 and gibbsite in 1822. The term was however retained as a rock name. The name of the village was changed to Les Baux around 1885; Sainte Claire Deville suggested that the mineral name should reflect this, and it was changed to bauxite (Bracewell, 1962, Rkgnier, 1988). Mining of bauxite began around 1860 in the Auriol region in the Bouches du Rhine area in the south of France. This ore was transported toMarseilles by carts and was processed in the Salindres plant, which at that time was the only plant producing alumina using the Deville process and aluminum by the chemical process. During that period white bauxite (low iron content) was particularly sought after for the production of aluminum sulfate, refractory bricks, and quick setting cement. Export of bauxite from France began in 1880 and was initially delivered to Chemische Fabrik, Goldschmischen near Breslau, and to Guilini's Ludwigshafen plant in Germany in 1885. These companies produced alum and aluminum sulfate (RCg- nier, 1988). The next bauxite mining operation was in Antrim County in Northern Ireland in 1873. This was first used for the manufacture of alumina refractory bricks and quick setting cement (Bracewell, 1962). It is important to emphasize that initially almost all of the bauxite which was produced came from France and was mainly used for non-metallurgical purposes. At that time even the production of alumina was mainly for use as a mordant in textile dying. However, with the development of the Hall-Héroult process, the alumina which was available was increasingly used for smelting to aluminum. In spite of this the demand for non-metallurgical bauxite continued to increase and a set of applications were developed. These include refractories, abrasives (including the recently developed proppants), high alumina cements, aluminum chemicals, activated bauxite, and alumina. It became increasingly evident that the high alumina-low alkali raw materials have special advantages. The question however was one of cost benefit. Chin (1989) has pointed out that the non-metallurgical operations have been traditionally grafted on a bauxite/alumina/aluminum industry tree. One of the most significant advances in Mineral Processing in recent years, is the development of the selective flocculation technology. The technology is primarily aimed at recovering the mineral values from ultrafine ore suspensions. This is achieved by selectively aggregating the mineral particles in question to such size as to enable their effective separation from the suspension. Selective flocculation utilizes the differences in the physical-chemical properties of the various mineral components in the mixed suspension. It is based on the preferential ad- sorption of an organic flocculant on the particular solids to be flocculated, leaving the remainder of the particles in suspension. In order to understand the mechanics of this process, selective flocculation may be divided into four major sub processes; these being: ore slurry dispersion, in which all the particles are stably and uniformly distributed in the suspension with the individual particles being essentially separate; flocculant selective adsorption and floc formation; floc conditioning, which aims at obtaining flocs with desire properties for their subsequent separation and with minimum entrapment of dispersed particles; and floc separation from the suspension. These sub processes will be reviewed later in this article.

Evaluation of results obtained by the Harris method for inverse pole figures is discussed. Two existing analyses and a new approach are compared. In the most frequently used analysis, different reflections are accorded equal weight. A second method involves area-weighting of reflections, mainly to take account of nonuniformity of Pole distribution. In the new method, reflections are weighted according to their multiplicity factors. Intensity ratios obtained from a sample of steel sheet by the three methods are compared. INVERSE pole figures offer a convenient method of depicting the proportions of material with various orientations referred to a unique specimen axis. The technique was first applied to fiber textures, but it is now frequently used as a description of texture in sheet metal, the unique axis in this case usually being the sheet normal. The Harris method' for the determination of inverse pole figures has the great merit of simplicity. It suffers certain intrinsic limitations, but provided that these are borne in mind, the results allow useful conclusions to be drawn regarding the effects of texture components on certain mechanical properties. Much thought has been given to alternative methods of texture description, aimed at eliminating the ambiguity in the simpler methods.2"6 Refinements in the method of description are obtained at the price of increasing complexity, and it seems clear that a simple method, such as that of Harris, will continue to find application. The original derivation by Harris1 has been corrected by Morris7 and later by Mueller, Chernock, and Beck.2 Since the latter reference is more accessible, it is referred to more frequently than the work of Morris. Most users of the inverse pole figure method present their results on the basis of the treatment by Mueller et al., and it is the purpose of the present communication to comment on this treatment and to suggest a simple modification to the method of presentation which enhances the meaningfulness of the results. Recently equations have been presented by Rose and Bruce' and by Rose², showing how the relative permeability of a reservoir rock may be determined from the capillary character of the rock. In particular, equations were developed to show the relationship between capillary pressure and the effective permeability to the wetting phase in a poly-phase flow system. The equations are as follows (nomenclature the same as in the Rose and Bruce paper) Rose and Bruce assume that the average length of path (L,), which the wetting fluid follows in flowing through a porous media is independent of the saturation to the wetting phase, so that 1 is a constant dependent only on the k rock, and the permeability to the wetting phase is a function of the saturation and of the capillnry pressure: In measuring the flow of ekctric current through partially saturated core samples, it has been observed that the electrical resistance usually is not a simple linear function of saturation. This fact indicates that the average length of path in the flow of electric current is not independent of saturation, but rather that the tortuosity of the path depends upon the average saturation to the conducting fluid as well as upon the characteristics of the rock. itself. Inasmuch as the flow of fluid and the flow of electric current in many respects are analogous, it may be indicated further that the length of path for fluid also may not be independent of saturation. The correction factor may be obtained from the resistivity-saturation relationship. As a part of the Bureau of Mines long-range program in asbestos, synthetic asbestiform compounds and minerals were prepared and described. Fundamental structural data on two such compounds are given in this report. Crystallographic data are provided for the synthetic isotypic compounds potassium-lead silicate, K2.Pb4 -Si8021 (I), and lead-aluminum silicate, Pb2. Pb4 .Al2Si6O21 (II). The space group symmetry 14/mmm was assigned provisionally to I and II on evidence of single crystal and piezoelectric measurements. A statistical evalua¬tion of indexed powder diffraction data revealed the cell edtes of I to be a 11.816 and c 7.932A and those of II to be a 11.723 and c 8.044A. The phases are uniaxial with observed refractive indices eD 1.790, an ?D,699 and eD 1.884, cusp 1,807, respectively. The atomic structure of I and II may be based on a complex of chains of silicon-oxygen tetrahedra lying along the c cell edge similar to the type of chain structure postulated by Pauling for scapolite. K2.Pb4.Si8021 and Pb2.Pb4 Al2Si6021 were first described by Geller and Bunting (5, 6)4 as fibrous compounds similar in crystal habit to asbestos. These authors gave powder diffraction data, although no attempt was made to find the cell edges or to index the powder diffraction patterns. Later, Shell and others (9) conducted a crystallochemical study of these fibrous silicates in search of a substitute for strategic asbestos. Their single crystal data revealed K2.Pb4 -Si8021 to be tetragonal body-centered with cell edges a 11.66, c 7.95 A. Pb2.Pb4 Al2Si6021 was concluded to be isotypic with K2.Pb4 -Si8021 on the basis of similar powder diffraction patterns, chemistry, and physical properties. No attempt was made, however, to index the powder diffraction record nor to determine the appropriate space group of either compound.

"Construction of the drilled shafts for the Brightman Street Bridge Replacement Project were not only challenging due to working over the water but were also challenged by changed soil conditions, concurrent work being performed by an adjacent contractor on the same project, environmental restrictions and severe winter conditions. A total of 36 x 8 foot (2.44m) diameter drilled shafts with 7.5 foot (2.31m) rock sockets were installed for the East and West bascule piers. This project also included Osterberg Cell load testing on two production drilled shafts at both the East and West bascule piers. The results from the load test program were used to fine tune the design of the drilled shaft rock sockets. From a constructability standpoint the reverse circulation drilling method with a pile top drill rig proved to be an excellent choice for drilling the overburden and rock sockets of the large diameter deep drilled shafts. INTRODUCTIONThe replacement Brightman Street Bridge spans the Taunton River between Fall River and Somerset in Massachusetts.The new crossing is located approximately 1500 feet (450m) upstream from the existing Brightman Street Bridge, which was built in 1908. The new mainline bridge includes nine spans totaling 1725 feet (525m). A bascule type moveable span will be located in the middle of the Taunton River and provide a 200 foot (61m) open channel centered about the 400 foot (122m) navigational channel. The bascule span, which has a span length of 409 feet (124.7m), will be a trunnion-type four leaf structure with a solid deck. A site plan is shown in Figure 1 Contract 3, which includes construction of the foundations for the East and West bascule piers, was bid on December 19, 2000 and was awarded to Modern Continental Construction Company (MCC) on January 24, 2001. MCC in turn awarded the subcontract for the installation of the drilled shafts to TREVIICOS Corporation, which started mobilizing in June of 2001.The scope of work for the drilled shafts of Contract 3 consisted in installing 18 drilled shafts in three rows on each side of the river to support the bascule piers located in the middle of the Taunton River.The foundation plan for the bascule span is shown in Figure 2."

Two processes are available for the production of synthetic fuels from coal high-pressure hydrogenation and the carbon monoxide-hydrogen synthe- sis. This paper presents some ideas and new developments in coal hydrogen- ation that have been incorporated in an estimate for the production of 30,000 barrels per day of liquid fuels, mainly gasoline. A few comparisons of the processes will be helpful before discussion of the details of pro- posed improvements in the hydrogenation process. The principle of the high-pressure hydrogenation process ie the addi- tion of hydrogen at pressurea in the range of 3,000 to 10,000 p.s.i. to coal at elevated temperature and with the help of catalysts. On the other hand, the principle in the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis is the complete break-down of coal into a mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen, followed by the catalytic combination of these two gasse into hydrocarbons or suitable catalysts. For the synthesis, moderately elevated pressures of about 350 p.8.1. will bo used in the immediate future, although it can be carried on at atmosphoric pressure with certain catalysts. The products of these two processes using coal as raw material are almost as differont as hydrocarbons can be. The products of the high-pres- sure hydrogenation of coal reflect the original constitution of the coal. They are, therefore, rich in ring compounds, both aromatic and naphthenic, but, due to the action of highly comprcesed hydrogen and catalyst, are satu- rated and very stable. These constituents give the gasoline a high octane number and excellent rich-mixture performance, combined with good gum and storage stability. Therefore, this gasoline is suitable for aviation gaso- line or base stock. The Diesel fuel can be hydrogenated to a centane number of 45 or higher, which is entirely satisfactory for operating normal Diesel

The Fosterville Gold mine is located approximately 20km to the East of Bendigo in central Victoria. The gold at Fosterville occurs as solid solution within disseminated arsenopyrite and pyrite. The Fosterville ore bodies contain various amounts of native carbon in the form of bituminous coal. This carbon (Non-Carbonate Carbon or NCC) has been the predominant mechanism for gold loss from the processing facility through”preg-robbing”.Processing of the Fosterville ore is achieved initially through crushing, grinding and flotation to extract the sulphides. The sulphide concentrate is oxidized using Bacterial Oxidation, before being leached in a conventional CIL circuit. A high portion of the native carbon (NCC) in the mine ore is naturally hydrophobic in nature, and subsequently reports to the flotation concentrate stream, and ultimately onto the CIL circuit. This NCC has a notable preg-robbing ability. Treatment of Black Shale ores, which have elevated NCC levels, has historically resulted in CIL recoveries as low as 35%, with around 60-80% of the gold loss from the leach circuit attributed to preg-robbing.Standard technologies for dealing with a carbonaceous leach feed have been trialed with limited success. The discovery of the significance of heat on leach recoveries, triggered extensive testwork on a range of leach feed and tails samples. Pilot plant testing demonstrated that “Heated Leaching” of the CIL tails was the best process with an average recovery increase of 7.5% being achieved. Following a successful pilot study, an engineering feasibility study was completed by Minerva Engineering, and the project economics determined. With strong recovery gains evident and a predicted project payback of 1-1.5 years, approval for the installation of the full scale plant was granted. Detailed design commenced in September 2008 with installation commencing in January 2009. The circuit was successfully commissioned in April 2009.Following commissioning, the Heated Leach circuit has achieved recovery gains of 4-14%, and has proven itself to be a significant contributor to the overall plant performance.

As part of a program designed to promote safety in industrial operations , the Bureau of Mines has been investigating the explosibility of numerous powdered products and dusts and studying means for the prevention of dust explosions . In a previous paper the results of a study of the inflammability and explosibility of metal powders were published . This report summarizes a similar study which has been made on various powders used in the plastics industry. The work was undertaken to provide information for a subcommittee of the Dust Explosion Hazards Committee of the National Fire Protection Association, which was charged with preparation of a code for the prevention of fires and dust explosions in plants producing or processing synthetic resins and molding compositions . The production of powders and generation of inflammable dusts are inherent in one or more steps of the manufacturing process of many resins and molding compositions, and control of the dust hazard is a major problem in the plastics industry . In the preparation of phenolic resin molding powders, for example , the solid synthetic resin is crushed and pulverized , and then blended with ground wood flour , cotton flock, or other fillers , as well as with coloring pigments . This raw mix is then passed through compounding mills , from which it emerges in the form of homogeneous sheeted stock, which is crushed , ground , and graded to form the molding powder . The number of major dust explosions in the plastics industry has been limited, but numerous small explosions have occurred, and in view of the ever -increasing volume of production the potential explosion hazard must be considered a very real one . Fortunately, this fact is realized by several manufacturers of plastic compounds , as well as by insurance companies , who are taking precautionary measures against possible accidents and during the past year or two have submitted numerous powder samples to the Bureau of Mines for explosibility tests .

"Technical publications in the field of mining and metallurgy have existed for a long time. Recent developments in electronic publishing on websites make it possible to disseminate information more widely and cost effectively than before. Professional societies have an opportunity to serve their members and their industry by publishing high-quality peer-reviewed papers on their websites as well as in printed form. Older publications can be scanned, and optical character recognition can be used to provide searchable text. Various business models exist around this process. This paper outlines the approach used by the Southern African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (SAIMM) to provide free open access to their journal papers and conference proceedings, as well as the work being done by OneMine.org to collect technical papers from a number of international societies and make them available to subscribers via a large database. An approach is outlined that should be of benefit to authors, readers, and society at large.INTRODUCTIONGeorgius Agricola (1494-1555) was not the first writer on the subjects of mining and metallurgy, but is well known as the author of De Re Metallica (‘of things metallic’ or ‘on the nature of metals’), a book that documents and illustrates the observations he made in the course of his extensive travels in the 1500s. Agricola wrote extensively about mining methods and metallurgical processes that were in place in the Middle Ages. The original Latin version of De Re Metallica was published in 1556, the year after Agricola died. It was translated into English by Herbert Hoover, a mining engineer and later President of the United States, and his wife Lou Henry Hoover, a geologist and classicist. The English version of De Re Metallica was published in 1912."

This paper explores the capacity effects of a square steel plate welded at the ground surface on a driven open-ended steel pile (i.e. the plate would touch the ground surface after the pile achieves the required penetration). A series of strain-controlled, 1-g laboratory tests were undertaken on piles with and without a square steel plate attached. The piles were driven in dry, loosely packed, uniform sand. Two plates were used, one with a breadth equal to two times the diameter of the pile (2D) and the other with a breadth equal to three times the diameter of the piles (3D). A 20% increase in capacity was recorded for the 2D plate, and a 110% increase in capacity was recorded for the 3D plate when compared to the pile without an attached steel plate. The back-analysis of the results allowed the derivation of a new expression to calculate the capacity of bearing plates, which accounted for the effects of sands compaction and dilation. By extrapolating the findings of these tests to a hypothetical scenario, a model design problem was described where the length of a pile can be reduced by 20% to 60% (depending on the load) by using a plate attached to the pile. The results of this study can help designers to minimise penetration depth; thus, achieving a more economical and sustainable design.

Sensor-based sorting methods to remove waste or for upgrading ore prior to downstream metallurgical processing is becoming more prevalent for mining operations. X-ray transmission (XRT) sorters are a popular choice for mineral processing plants since they can sort a wide variety of minerals. XRT sorters pass high intensity X-rays through particles to generate images of varying greyscale, based on their effective atomic density. The ore sorter then mechanically separates the particles using algorithms based on the images. A popular test currently used to evaluate the amenability of the ore to XRT sorting is to pass the particles through the sorter and obtain the greyscale images showing mineralogical differences. This test provides information on the mineralogical heterogeneity between ore particles for their separation. However, it does not provide an understanding of the actual mineralogical composition of the ore or information pertaining to which other minerals may respond in a similar manner, nor does it provide liberation information. This paper describes a test that combines high resolution X-ray micro Computer Tomography (CT) combined with QEMScan to obtain information about amenability of ore to XRT sorting and to obtain valuable information that can streamline metallurgical testwork programs. This test also provides information relating to particle thickness and associated X-ray attenuation coefficients, desired mineral presence and mineralogical information relating to associated minerals and clays to assist with developing sorting algorithms. Combining the CT and QEMScan can address many limitations of the current method to determine whether XRT sorting technology is appropriate for particular ores. Mineralogy information from QEMScan can identify incidences of; mineral encapsulation, problematic clays, detrimental minerals as well as calibrate the greyscale values of CT data. Additional 3D CT imaging carried out on cores provides spatial information of the minerals within the ore and mineral grades.

IT is a distinct privilege to participate in this meeting convened to honor the memory of Henry Marion Howe, a distinguished scientist and metallurgist. Many have added to our rapidly growing fund of metallurgical knowledge but few have made the unique contribution of formulating basic concepts essential to an over-all comprehensive view of the subject of metallography. Of those previously selected to deliver this lecture, several have added a personal touch to their discourse because they were able to refer to their associations with Dr. Howe. It was not my good fortune to know him or to enjoy his inspiring influence. Like most of you, my contact has been with his published works, which are outstanding in that they provide lucid, detailed expositions of the nature and behavior of metals and alloys. His deep understanding and clarity of expression have greatly accelerated our progress in metallography and in the use of metals. The degree to which a man's thinking, experimentation and writing contribute toward an understanding of basic laws and phenomena determines whether his life's work is of transitory or permanent value. This occasion appropriately recognizes the fundamental importance of Dr. Howe's pioneer work in the field of metallurgy. On two former occasions, gray iron was selected as a subject for discussion. The fact that the production of pig iron has not been discussed before does not reflect any lack of interest on the part of Dr. Howe or former lecturers in the process that under- lies the production of steel. Although Dr. Howe's work in his later years centered around metallography, his earlier publications show a considerable interest in the production of iron and steel. He recognized that in the ascending spiral of metallurgical advancement we are not winding a single thread but are weaving a complex fabric. Specific evidence of his interest in the production of pig iron may be found in his book1 on The Metallography of Cast Iron and Steel. In explaining why blast furnaces have been in constant use for about 600 years, he says: "The process is economical because it utilizes with extraordinary completeness the calorific power of the coke due to the thorough transfer of heat from the gaseous products of combustion to the charge." This emphasis on heat transfer, overlooked in many more extended and more recent discussions of the blast-furnace process, illustrates Professor Howe's ability to see the essentials. Other distinct advantages of the blast furnace, such as the removal of much of the sulphur and practically all of the oxygen, were mentioned. It was also stated that although the blast- furnace process is complex in nature, its outward form is comparatively simple, thus permitting large-scale production at small labor costs. IT is a privilege and a pleasure to deliver this, the Twenty-sixth Annual Institute of Metals Division Lecture. Eleven years ago C. A. Edwards addressed this audience on the subject "Gases in Metals." In spite of this relatively recent presentation, I propose to, present to you some quantitative considerations of industrial significance on the separation of gases from molten metals because recent observations and measurements, presented in the literature, have made it possible to evaluate mathematically the gases or gas-forming elements and to develop an understanding of the mechanism of gas separation that should permit, in many cases, the control of this baffling phenomenon. DEFINITIONS Before becoming involved in the subject it seems desirable, for the sake of clarity, to state certain definitions and axioms: I. We are dealing only with gases that separate from the molten metal either during cooling or in the transition from liquid to solid. Gases injected by the liquid stream and trapped in the solidified metal, or those forced into the solidifying metal from the mold due to either thermal or cher4ical effects are not considered. Neither are we concerned with the separation of gases within the metal after solidification is complete for the data on this subject are at least complete enough to permit the practicing metallurgist to satisfactorily control the phenomenon. 2. Only where there is a decrease in solubility or a change in equilibrium of either a gaseous element or an element that reacts to form a gaseous compound, can there be a separation of a gaseous phase from the liquid or solidifying metal. 3. The amount of gas separating from the liquid during solidification can be computed directly from the amount of the element contained in the liquid when freezing commences less the amount of the element found in the solid either as a separate solid phase or in solid solution. 4. There can be no separation of gas bubbles unless the told pressure of the gases in the liquid meld exceeds atmospheric pressure plus the hydrostatic pressure of ' the liquid metal head. (In addition, pres- sure resulting from surface tension in- creases the total pressure requirement for initial gas separation. Probably the remarkable differences in appearance caused by different gases in the same host metal are influenced greatly by the rate of diffusion of the gas in the liquid metal balancing the decrease in pressure as the gas bubble size increases and the surface tension effect decreases. Thus hydrogen with its high diffusion rate in liquid copper separates in the form of relatively coarse cavities for a given rate of heat extraction.) 5. IN this paper the authors aim to chronicle the experience and salient points brought out in changing flotation reagents at a concentrator which had probably been using a mininium amount of oil at a minimum cost per ton, to a more complicated system requiring a partial chemical control. The original oils were coal tar and pine oil. The new reagents are lime, xanthate and pine oil. It was found that there were no insurmountable difficulties and eventually the cost of the new reagents per ton of ore proved to be very little more than that of the old. LIME PLANT When the question of handling lime came up there were two propositions open: (1) to handle the lime dry; (2) to handle it wet in the form of an emulsion. Granting that a dry lime feeder would function properly, delivering lime uniformly, the chief objection was the dust that would be raised when these feeders were being charged or operated, as the only possible location was on a gallery beneath which men were working. With this objection the handling of lime as an emulsion seemed to be the better scheme. The lime plant which was first installed was for experimental work on one section. This was gradually changed and developed until it was of sufficient size to accommodate 20 sections. The various changes will not be discussed and the following description deals only with the fully developed plant. Crude as it is, and perhaps somewhat expensive to operate, the lime-handling plant has been quite successful. Much has been learned which will pave the way for a better installation in the future. Burnt lime is received loose in standard gage box cars. This is the product of the kilns and has had no screening or sorting. A grab sample is taken from each car as it is unloaded. The distribution of volcanic-hosted massive sulfide deposits through time is episodic, involving relatively short time intervals of apparent high productivity and long intervals of low productivity. This distribution is principally related to the geodynamic evolution of the Earth. The vast majority of these deposits is associated with the assembly of supercontinents and form along convergent margins, generally in back-arc basins or rifted arcs. This contrasts with the distribution of black smoker deposits, which presently form along both convergent margins, particularly in the western Pacific, and divergent margins at mid-ocean ridges. However, the latter environment is rarely preserved deep into the geological past.There also appear to be systematic patterns in a number of other features of volcanic-hosted massive deposits through time. Deposits hosted by mafic-dominated successions are dominant in Archean to Proterozoic rocks, whereas deposits hosted by felsic-dominated successions are most common in Phanerozoic rocks. Geochemical characteristics of felsic rocks within the host successions and ore lead and sulfur isotope data of the ores have also changed with time. This suggests changes in the process of subduction and/or changes in the characteristics of the over-riding plate with time, consistent with isotopic and geologic evidence for greater reworking of pre-existing crust during the Phanerozoic.Other secular changes that are reflected in characteristics of volcanic-hosted massive sulfide deposits include the redox state and salinity of coeval oceans. As an example, both the abundance of sulfate minerals and sulfur isotope patterns reflect the development of periods of anoxic conditions over time, with major intervals of anoxia reflected by a virtual lack or low abundance of sulfate minerals in volcanic-hosted massive sulfide deposits in the Mesoarchean to the Palaeoproterozoic, and shorter intervals since.CITATION:Huston, D L, Eglington, B, Pehrsson, S, Piercey, S and Doublier, M, 2015.
