The search for environmentally friendly and cost-effective methods for gold extraction has been undertaken in order to provide alternatives to the use of cyanide leaching in the gold industry. Among such alternative reagents is the combination of chloride and hypochlorite ions due to their oxidation of metallic gold and its complexation. Therefore, the current work aims at investigating gold leaching from an oxidized material by means of a solution comprising calcium hypochlorite and sodium chlorite. The sample used in the current research contained 66.1% Fe2O3, 20.4%SiO2, and 35.7 g/t of Au. In addition, XRD and SEM-EDS analysis revealed iron oxide, quartz and muscovite as the main crystalline phases in the sample. For comparison purposes, cyanidation of the oxidized material resulted in 90% gold extraction in 24 h. The reference conditions for the leaching tests with the chlorite-hypochlorite system were: particle size −37 μm, solid/liquid ratio of 10% (w/v), 10 g/L NaCl, 10 g/L Ca (OCl)2, pH 5–6, 3 h of leaching. The effects of the: (i) Ca(OCl)2 concentration, (ii) NaCl concentration, (iii) pHrange and (iv) the effect of pulp density in the extraction of gold were assessed. In addition, the stability of the hypochlorite solutions (OCl−) was investigated. The ideal concentrations of Ca(OCl)2 and NaCl were determined as 25 g/L and 15 g/L, respectively, whereas the optimal pH range was 4–6. Under these conditions, the final gold extraction reached approximately 84%. By varying the solids content of the pulp (10%, 20% and 30%), it was observed that the lower solids value resulted in greater gold extraction (84%). The degradation of the hypochlorite solution and the possible catalytic effect of the presence of the solid were evidenced. To sumup, in the experiment, high gold extractions were achieved in shorter periods of time (3 h), as compared to the cyanidation of the same sample. On the other hand, itwas necessary to use significant amounts of the reagent due to hypochlorite instability at the pH conditions recommended for high gold extractions.

This paper covers only the energy uses of natural resources and does not deal with non- energy uses, which in 1975 were of the order of 10 per cent of the total consumption of energy resources. The United Nations `J' Series of Statistics ex- presses each of the various forms of energy in terms of its coal equivalent in metric tonnes and this basis is followed in this paper. The strategic plan for bridge engineering issued by AASHTO in 2005 identified extending the service life and optimizing structural systems of bridges in the United States as two grand challenges in bridge engineering, with the objective of producing safer bridges that have a minimum service life of 75 years and reduced maintenance cost. Material deterioration was identified as one of the primary challenges to achieving the objective of extended life. In substructural applications (e.g., deep foundations), construction materials such as timber, steel, and concrete are subjected to deterioration due to environmental impacts. Using innovative and new materials for foundation applications makes the AASHTO objective of 75 years service life achievable. Ultra High Performance Concrete (UHPC) with compressive strength of 26,000 psi (180 MPa) and excellent durability has been used in superstructural applications but not in geotechnical and substructural applications. This paper explores the possibility of using precast, prestressed UHPC piles in future bridges. An H-shaped UHPC section, which is 10-in. (250-mm) deep with weight similar to that of an HP10×57 steel pile, was designed for constructability and economical reasons. Instrumented UHPC elements were cast to conduct large-scale field tests. In the field, two UHPC piles have been successfully driven in glacial till clay soil and load tested vertically. Test results, durability, drivability, and other material advantages over normal concrete and steel indicate that UHPC piles are a viable alternative to extend the life of bridge structures.

Efficient enrichment of high-carbon low-grade mica stone coal containing vanadium is a key problem in the mineral processing field, and the mature beneficiation process is yet to be developed and applied. In this paper, a special mineral mica type of stone coal containing vanadium from Tongshan, Hubei Province, China was selected as the research object. Chemical analysis results show that this mineral contains V2O5 0.71%, SiO2 49.28%, C 13.44%, and CaO 6.26%. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) shows that vanadium generally exists in all kinds of mica minerals in 20 µm to 50 µm fractions. Mica stone coal containing vanadium must be ground to a particular fineness (approximately 45 µm). To reduce acid consumption during vanadium extraction from stone coal through acid leaching, a pretreatment process was proposed to enrich micas by using shaking table and flotation methods. A new combined technology process was implemented, resulting in a 0.96% improvement in the vanadium grade of raw materials in the succeeding process. Vanadium losses were controlled to 4.57% through the pre-concentration process, which reduced the burden of the subsequent procedure. The content of high acid consuming minerals was also diminished, such that approximately 6612 CNY was saved from producing 1 t V2O5. Therefore, stone coal containing vanadium should be pre-concentrated by using an appropriate combined process to reduce costs.

The dressing-works of the St. Joseph Lead Company were destroyed by fire, February 26th, 1883. Within about four months, or on July 5th, 1883, the new mill, with a capacity of 500 tons per day, was built and in active operation. The capacity of the new mill has since been increased to 800 tons per day. The old mill was built in 1867, by Mr. C. B. Parsons, the present superintendent. It was a curious rambling old structure, which had grown with the demands of the business; a few jigs having been added in one place, a table or two in another and wings and sheds added to the main buildings, from time to time, as it was found necessary to increase the efficiency or the capacity of the mill. The old mill was, moreover, a most interesting place to the student, a perfect "museum of ore-dressing." Nearly every form of dressing apparatus known to the art had, at one time or another, found a place under its roof, jigs of many kinds, concave, convex, side-bump and stationary tables, tyes, buddles, dolly-tubs, etc., etc. The method of dressing followed in the main the lines of English practice, but with many modifications, both in the machinery and the methods of working, due to the inventive genius of Mr. Parsons. The grinding mill is probably the most common unit operation in mineral processing. There is, however, much that can still be done in the way of optimization. This paper discusses the results of a well-controlled pilot-scale test in which the performance of a tumbling mill equipped with a conventional rubber lining and lifter bars was compared to a tumbling mill equipped with a smooth rubber lining of the magnetic type. The results indicate that the smooth lining is about 14% more effective with respect to energy consumption. By optimizing the size of the grinding media, the mill capacity can be increased in many grinding operations. In this specific case, grinding with a -20-mm ball charge required 26% less grinding energy than grinding with a -30-mm ball charge. The energy savings can, in most cases, be converted to an increase in capacity. The wear of the grinding media is difficult to assess over a short test period, but the results suggest that the wear is somewhat less when a smooth lining is used. A determination of the wear of the linings was not included in this study, but it is generally accepted that the use of magnetic linings reduces the lining costs dramatically. Computer simulation using the Millsoft code developed by Mishra et al. confirms and explains the increased effectiveness of comminution when a smooth lining and smaller grinding balls are used.

To develop a method for predicting the stability of a fuel during long-term storage from rapid aging tests at 200° F, the Bureau of Mines determined the stabilities of three gasoline base stocks and an alkylate blending stock in both sealed storage and aerated storage at 110° F for periods extending to 32 weeks. Stabilities of samples containing gasoline-additive compounds were compared by aging, using two methods--rapid aging in a bomb at 200° F for intervals up to 16 hours and storage at 110° F. The additives used were an uninhibited tetraethyllead motor mix, N,N'-di-sec-buty1-p-phenylenediamine and 2,6-di-tert-butyl-4-methylpheno1. Results were related by graphs that enable predictions of gum and sediment formation during storage from data obtained in bomb tests. A premium-gasoline base stock and the alkylate proved to be stable, but the two regular-grade gasoline base stocks were found to be unstable. Addition of the diamine antioxidant improved the stability of both of the regular gasoline base stocks, while the phenol antioxidant improved only one of them. The presence of the tetraethyllead decreased the storage stability of all four fuels, both with respect to formation of gum and precipitation of inorganic sediment. The rapid test at 200° F appears to offer promise as a basis for a method of predicting gasoline stability in long-term 110° F storage.

In planning and designing of underground excavations and construction, it is of considerable importance that the stresses and displacements in the rock mass subjected to arbitrary sequences of unloading and loading be within allowable limits. For determination of the stress and displacement fields, the usual approach is to treat the rock as an elastic material and to apply the principles of the theory of elasticity. However, analytic solutions are available only for a limited class of problems of simple geometry and idealized material properties. Nonhomogeneity and anisotropy of material coupled with complex geometrical configuration and initial stress fields that are almost always preexistent in rock masses at great depths, render the problem intractable by analytical methods. Approximate solution techniques using numerical procedures have, therefore, to be resorted to. The finite element method as applied to plane stress analysis was introduced by Clough.1 It has developed into a powerful tool for the analysis of various field problems in structural and continuum mechanics. The method is well documented in the literature2-6 and, therefore, its historical development will not be discussed here. Wilson's analysis of the plane stress/strain problem has found extensive use in the area of soil and rock mechanics including stresses around underground openings; stresses and displacements in dams, foundations, etc.7-11 In his analysis of the axisymmetric solid,3 Wilson proposed a procedure to allow for certain cases of nonlinear material properties. Spatial and temporal trends in water chemistry in the acidic (pH ~2.6) Berkeley Pit lake, Butte, Montana, can be explained by a newly developed iron-cycling model. Key elements of this model include: subaqueous oxidation of pyrite and other metal sulfide minerals by dissolved ferric iron, producing Fe2+ as a by-product; re-oxidation of Fe2+ to Fe3+ in the epilimnion, assisted by A ferrooxidans; precipitation of secondary ferric minerals (schwertmannite, jarosite) in the epilimnion; and replenishment of the Fe3+ concentration of the hypolimnion by seasonal lake turnover and gravitational settling and re-dissolution of ferric precipitates. Pyrite oxidation rates were approximated by using published rate laws and information on the Fe3+ concentrations (~5 mmol) of the Berkeley Pit as a function of depth. The results indicate that subaqueous pyrite oxidation may be releasing as little as 6 + 106 or as much as 600 + 106 moles of H+ each year to the lake; the large range reflects uncertainty in calculation of the specific surface area of pyrite in the flooded pit. This helps to explain the observation that the pH and metal concentrations of the Berkeley Pit have not improved with time since mine flooding began in 1983. Vertical cycling of ferric iron in the pit lake permits pyrite oxidation to continue in deep water, even in the absence of dissolved oxygen. This hypothesis is supported by preliminary stable-isotope data.

The Silver Peak Range North Wilderness Study Area was deleted from the list of US Bureau of Land Management lands in Nevada to be considered for wilderness designation. This decision was based in part on the US Bureau of Mines mineral investigation of the wilderness study area which found indications of precious- and base-metal-resources. The study area lies between the Silver Peak and Dyer mining districts of west-central Nevada. The Bureau examined 13 mineralized sites, most of which were previously unknown and unclaimed. These sites are along two zones that cross the study area from the Silver Peak mining district to the Dyer mining district. The two zones transect a volcanic center of fractured and altered rocks that contain epithermal veins of quartz and calcite with gold, silver, and base-metals. At the surface, these veins are poorly defined. Exposures of the more than forty veins examined were as thick as 17 ft and as long as 1000 ft. Samples from these veins contained significant amounts of precious- and base-metals-as much as 0.02 oz per ton gold, 2.1 oz per ton silver, 1.0% copper, 2.6% lead and 0.4 % zinc. No vein large enough or of high enough grade to be classified a mineral resource was disclosed by the sample data. However, most do have indications of precious- and base-metal-resources at depth. Subsurface exploration of some of the veins is recommended.

Teleseismic travel time residuals measured on 600-1000 km seismic arrays across the Rio Grande and East African rifts provide evidence for upper mantle low velocity zones beneath each rift of velocity contrast 6%-8%. Refraction studies show thinning of the crust below the rift axes. Regional uplift which extends hundreds of km either side of the axes, is isostatically compensated by negative density contrast at depth. Since the refraction argues against compensation by thickened crust, compensation in the upper mantle low velocity zones is suggested. Temperature effects alone can not explain the reduced velocities. Generation of a few percent of partial melt is the most probable source of the reduction. A passive extensional mechanism is investigated for the Rio Grande rift in which hot asthenosphere intrudes the lithosphere raising its temperature and generating moderate melting. It requires less than 1% extension to explain the melting but a prodigious 26% to raise the temperature from a pre-rifting continental geotherm to the solidus. Geological estimates find that extension is less than 10% over the uplift zone. Such a mechanism is possible only if the prerifting lower lithosphere geotherm lies closer to the solidus than that of stable continent. This is supported by the observed high heat flow in the Rio Grande rift uplift region which, given the long time constant for thermal diffusion, reflects elevated temperatures at depth well in advance of the onset of rifting.

The technology developed by the authors uses new methods for raw material smelting in electric furnaces, a new autogenous method and apparatus for subliming smelting for antimony trioxide production and separation of antimony and gold. Concentrate produced from the ore deposits in Yakutia has the following average contents of main constituents, % by weight: 29.4 Sb, 1.2 Fe, 13.1 S, 40.0 SiO2, 0.2 As, 2.6 CaO and 45 g/t of Au. Unlike the technology used abroad a new autogenous method makes it possible to increase considerably specific capacity and reduce gold losses with antimony trioxide by several times. At the same time mineralogical composition of trioxide has improved considerably ? it has mainly a cubic base with prevalence of senarmontite. The content of a main component (Sb2O3) in the final product has increased from 99.0% up to 99.6% which means better quality and makes it suitable for use in special technologies. Despite a lower antimony content of the concentrate (29.4% as compared with over 33% as common in the world practice), an antimony recovery of 85.3% into a commercial-grade product has been achieved, as well as a gold recovery of 96.65% into a gold-antimony alloy. The technology for processing gold-antimony materials developed and introduced at the Ryaztsvetmet plant is unique in the world with respect to gold recoveries.

During periods of high metal prices and strong metal demand tailings retreatment can be economic. Most tailings retreatment operations are technically challenging, low margin operations, because the easily recovered mineral has already been removed, therefore, process improvements can potentially yield large economic benefits. The Hellyer tailings dam was owned by Intec Ltd and contained 10.9 million tonnes grading 2.8 per cent zinc, 3.0 per cent lead, 88 g/t of silver, 0.16 per cent copper and 2.6 g/t gold. In November 2006 the Polymetals Group, as operator, restarted the Hellyer plant to retreat these tailings. Within a few months the operation had stabilised and Polymetals was meeting budgeted targets of throughput, metal recovery and concentrate quality. Polymetals and Intec then investigated methods that would improve the metallurgical result for this difficult to treat tailings. Since the tailings are fine-grained with 80 per cent <45 ¦m, magnetic aggregation of the paramagnetic sphalerite was evaluated. Magnetic aggregation of an oxidised tailings feed has not been tested before, nor had the technology been available when Hellyer ore was originally processed. Extensive statistical test work showed magnetic aggregation of the sphalerite fines in the zinc cleaner circuit increased total zinc recovery. The increase in the mean zinc recovery with magnetic conditioning was 3.63 per cent, at a statistical level of confidence of 97.8 per cent, and at the same mean zinc concentrate grade.

[Secretary's Note.—The following official tables, prepared by the government of the State of Nuevo Leon, and presented to the Institute at the fifth seseion of its Mexican meeting, held at Monterrey, November 26, 1901, present in compact form a general summary of the mineral and metallurgical industry of the State for the preceding calendar year, together with a statement of the railway-shipments of ores from January 1 to October 31, 1901, which, in the absence of direct official mining and metallurgical statistics (not yet available for that year), clearly indicates an increased activity and productiveness of these industries. In other words, the mines are reported to have yielded in 1900 a total product of 83,960,169 kilos of ore; whereas, the railway is reported to have carried, in 10 months of 1901, a total of 108,318,647 kilos of ore. At this rate, the railway-shipments for 1901 mould amount to nearly 130,000,000 kilos. It is, of course, possible that the railwaystatistics include other freight than ores, or that they include duplications, such as would be involved in the record, first of certain ores transported, and afterwards of the " base bullion " produced therefrom. An accurate comparison is therefore impossible ; yet, after making all reasonable allowances for such items as have been named, it seems safe to infer that the mining and metallurgical industry of this State accomplished in 1901 a substantial progress.]

Investigations in the Ortiz Mountains have revealed the relationship of igneous activity and gold mineralization to the Tijeras-Canoncito Fault System (TCFS). The northeast-trending TCFS passes through the southeastern part of the Ortiz Mountains where its principal structure is the asymmetric Ortiz Graben. Several fault blocks, containing up to 305 m (1000 ft ) of Eocene Galisteo Formation, comprise the graben that has up to 1220 and 610 m (4000 and 2000 ft) of stratigraphic separation on its southeast and northwest sides, respectively. Intrusions in the Ortiz Mountains can be subdivided into two petrochemical types: an older calcalkaline suite and a younger alkaline suite. The calc-alkaline rocks are characterized by extensive sill, dike, and laccolithic bodies of latite-andesite intrusives and at least one younger (?) granodiorite stock at Candelaria Mountain. The alkaline rocks consist of a large nepheline-bearing augite-monzonite stock, a latite-porphyry hypabyssal plug, the Ortiz diatreme (vent breccia), and trachytic-latite dikes radial to the diatreme. K-Ar age determinations suggest the older suite to be 34 +/-2.2 million years while the younger alkaline rocks range from about 30 to 26 million years. Gold mineralization in the Ortiz Mountains occurs in five distinct environments: brecciapipes, skarns, veins, porphyry-like stockworks, and placers. Lode mineralization is associated with the alkaline suite of intrusive rocks postdating the Ortiz diatreme and predating most of the trachytic-latite radial dikes.

Mkango Resources Limited is developing the Songwe Hill Rare Earth Element Project in southeast Malawi. Since being awarded the exclusive exploration licence for the project in January 2010, Mkango has completed an extensive work programme including detailed mineralogical studies, geological mapping, geochemical sampling and trenching, environmental and social studies, two phases of diamond drilling, and extensive metallurgical test work. In October 2012, the company announced a NI 43-101 compliant mineral resource estimate comprising an Indicated resource of 13.2 million tonnes grading 1.62% total rare earth oxides (TREO) and an Inferred resource of 18.6 million tonnes grading 1.38% TREO. The Indicated mineral resource estimate formed the basis for commencement of the Preliminary Feasibility Study (PFS). The mineralogical program identified the fluorocarbonate mineral, synchysite, and the phosphate mineral, apatite, as the primary rare earth element (REE) bearing minerals. Extensive flotation testwork conducted at Mintek in South Africa has resulted in an effective regime to increase the REO grade 2.6 times. Initial leaching testwork by Mintek identified that a selective hydrochloric acid (HCl) leach can target the gangue minerals with minimal REE dissolution. Recent testwork undertaken at Nagrom in Western Australia has expanded on this work to develop a two stage HCl leach process incorporating HCl recycling. A downstream processing route of purification and cerium rejection to produce a cerium depleted high grade REE concentrate suitable as feed to a separation facility is proposed.

THE slag performs two useful functions. in open-hearth steel-making. First, it is the means of disposal of all the impurities, save carbon, which are removed from the charge materials in refining the steel, so it must be suited to receiving and retaining as much as possible of undesirable elements with minimum loss of iron and useful alloying elements. Second, the slag serves as a buffer between the flame and the bath and transfers oxygen to the metal at a measured pace contrasted with the violent and difficultly controlled oxidation of the bessemer process. At the same time, the slag is a thermal insulator that limits the rate at which heat can be delivered to the metal from the flame, and a heavy slag blanket thereby serves as a brake on production rates. It has been said with justification that the secret of good steel- making is to make a good slag and the steel will take care of itself. In a broad sense, the subject of slag control includes not only the adjustment of the composition of the slag but also of its relative weight in terms of percentage of the metal-bath weight. The slag is made up essentially of: (1) oxides formed by oxidation of silicon, manganese, phosphorus, and iron in the charge, (2) SO2, MnO, MgO, and other oxides charged as such or introduced incidentally with ores or fluxes or by refractory erosion, and (3) lime charged or fed to the heat to neutralize the "acidic" oxides present (SiO2 and P2O5). Obviously, if practically perfect control were possible over the composition of the charge as well as over the oxidation process during the melting period, both slag weight and composition would be very nearly predetermined, and the control problem would be solved. Unfortunately, only a somewhat imperfect control over these factors is possible, so the operator must begin during the lime boil and continue through the refining period to discover and correct departures from the normal pattern of slag development.
