"Base metal and precious metal deposits are well known for their significant geometallurgical variation throughout the volume of the proven resource. At the metallurgical level, the plant normally processes an upper oxidised layer, a transition zone and a sulfide zone, often leading to different processing techniques for the different zones. A novel processing approach is presented whereby alkaline leaching with glycine is used to leach base and precious metals, using a copper-gold ore deposit as a case study. Glycine is a cheap, non-toxic, non-volatile, highly water-soluble crystalline solid produced industrially in bulk quantities. As a chelating ligand it forms a number of stable glycinate complexes with Ni, Co, Cu, platinum group metals (PGMs), Au, Ag, Zn, Pb, Hg and Cd, with broad stability regions over an extended temperature-pH-Eh range, allowing dissolution of these metals in the neutral and alkaline regions (pH 7–13). It has been shown that this lixiviant system can leach the metals from their oxide, oxy-halide, basic sulfate, carbonate, native and various sulfide forms, including refractory sulfides such as chalcopyrite. Extraction of the metals from their soluble glycinates is easily achieved using a range of solvent extraction and precipitation processes, and the glycine remains stable in aqueous solution for recycle and reuse. Minerals bearing metals in Groups 1 to 8 of the periodic table are normally unaltered. This technology therefore provides a highly selective leaching environment for the extraction of numerous scarce metals of economic interest, with minimal interaction with gangue minerals, whilst using environmentally benign reagents. Problematic leach residues such as jarosites, elemental sulfur and silica gels are averted through this processing approach. "An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. Cu-Ag-Au mineralisation at Kluwih prospect in Eastern Java, Indonesia is related to a high-sulfidation hydrothermal system within a volcanic dome (2.35 × 1.7 km diameter). The mineralisation occurs mainly in steeply dipping, structurally-controlled quartz-enargite-pyrite veins (several centimetres to 2 m wide) and is hosted mainly in porphyritic dacite, volcaniclastic rocks and volcanic breccia of the dome and in an underlying andesite that yielded a zircon U-Pb age of 11.5 Ma.Short wave infrared spectrometer analyses were carried out for alteration mapping at Kluwih. There are two main stages of alteration produced by the hydrothermal activity. The alteration mineral assemblages indicate an advanced argillic alteration. The Cu mineralisation occurred in the form of enargite and subordinate chalcopyrite with an intergrown texture in the early stage. These mineralised veins are characterised by narrow pyrophyllite ± diaspore and dickite selvages (metres wide) and a peripheral K-muscovite envelope (sericitic alteration) up to 100 m wide. The K-muscovite envelope is zoned outward to Na-muscovite or Na-illite. Late-stage kaolinite and smectite alteration overprints the porphyritic dacite and may obscure the nature of early mica-clay alteration. The spatial distribution of different alteration assemblages suggests that the temperature of hydrothermal fluid increases with depth.Both the high-sulfidation mineralisation and advanced argillic alteration are suggested to be related to magmatic-hydrothermal fluids, which are likely to originate from an undiscovered deeper porphyry Cu-Au system below the porphyritic dacite. Based on alteration mapping results and comparisons to similar deposits, the porphyry intrusion could be up to 500 m below the volcanic dome. In the field of pyrometallurgy, the equilibrium evaluation has recently become easy by use of thermodynamic software, but it is strongly desired to estimate the amounts of non-equilibrium minor components to simulate practical processes. However, simple physico-chemical technique can not be applied to evaluate practical non-equilibrium components for many reasons. As an engineering solution for postulated equilibrium system, the activity coefficient is modified and introduced as the simulation parameter referred to as the "adjustment coefficient." This modified thermodynamic calculations were adopted to various sulfide roasting processes where many solid phases are participating and the system is not necessarily in equilibrium. Successful simulation was realized by assigning suitable adjustment coefficients for minor components which form a pseudo solid solution in the calcine. Some examples from sulfation roasting and dearsenizing roasting were discussed. In the smelting system, the loss of copper in slag is caused by equilibrium and non- equilibrium reasons, that is, chemical dissolution and entrainment of copper in slag. The total copper content of slag was simulated by use of the adjustment coefficient for entrained copper.

"The mechanism of joint action of a frother (alpha-terpineol) and a collector (ethyl xanthate) in the flotation of chalcocite has been examined. In order to study the dynamic effects of frother and collector in bubble-particle collisions, the following aspects were investigated : determination of zeta-potential. Measurements of the thickness of fluid film on the surface of chalcocite and adsorption of xanthate, as influenced by alpha-terpineol, induction time and flotation versus concentration of alpha-terpineol and ethyl xanthate.The mechanism of the adsorption-desorption phenomenon on chalcocite with regard to non-ionic molecules, e.g. a-terpineol, has been considered, and the influence of this on the stage and thickness of the intervening wet layer between a bubble and a particle, changing the probability of collision and attachment, is suggested."

"Near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy sorting technology is incorporated in an automated optical mineral sorter that can discriminate between materials using the differences in characteristics when exposed to near-infrared radiation. During September 2014 to April 2015, a pilot plant that utilized NIR technology to discriminate between kimberlite and waste materials was commissioned to determine the viability of including this technology in the diamond winning process flow sheet at Cullinan Diamond Mine. The plant was used to minimize the waste content in the size fraction -70+35 mm that reports to the crushing section and then to the dense media separation process. This paper describes the initial test work, conducted at Mintek, that led to the decision to conduct a pilot-scale study. The mineralogical characterization of the feed and product streams to establish the sorting criteria and the operational data obtained during the pilot plant campaign are described. The results indicated a good possibility of discriminating between the kimberlite and waste material using NIR technology. However, the consistency of discrimination was not good enough to avoid the risk of potential diamond loss. Furthermore, a lower than expected availability of the machine reduced the throughput capabilities. IntroductionUsing near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) technology for ore sorting is a new concept for the mineral processing and mining industry. NIRS has been used for decades in the laboratory for the identification of pure minerals, and has its roots in the recycling, food, and pharmaceutical industries (Salter and Wyatt, 1991; Robben et al., 2009). Ore sorting in itself is not a new concept; it was introduced during the Stone Age with handsorting being the first method to separate valuable materials from gangue (Wills and Napier-Munn, 2006; Sassos, 1985). However, over the years the scale of mining has increased and hand-sorting has become challenging to implement (Joensson, 2014).Sensor-based sorting is an advanced technology that can help overcome problems such as ore dilution experienced in mineral processing operations. The benefits are lower energy and water costs, reduced ore dilution, lower environmental impact, and improved profit margin (Mathew, 1974; Jonsson, 2014; Salter and Wyatt, 2009; Death et al., 2009). In sensor-based sorting, materials are mechanically sorted based on certain physical properties that are detected by a sensor (Dalm, 2013). Research has found that with NIR scanners it is possible to obtain a ‘fingerprint’ of a sample that is directly related to its mineralogical composition. According to Woutruba et al. (2009), molecules absorb NIR radiation by means of electronic and vibrational transitions. Nowadays, there are many sensors available in the market that utilize different material properties; the choice of a sensor is dependent on the mineralogy of the ore."

Further development of the Nitric-Sulfuric Leach (NSL) process has led to an improved design of the leach and nitric acid recovery steps. NO produced in the leach step is reacted with oxygen, regenerating N02, which is sparged directly into the leach reactor. Leaching is simplified to two steps and the nitric acid plant is replaced with an oxidation recycle gas sys-tem. Laboratory work substantiated the concept and led to selection of operating conditions. The lab work also pointed to improved process control compared to use of nitric acid as the sole oxidant. Recovery of copper from purified pregnant liquor is modified to use air agitation electrowinning improving cathode quality and lowering tankhouse costs. Economic evaluation shows reduction of capital requirements from $2400/AT to $2000/AT in 1978 dollars for 50,000 TPY of copper production.

"The use of hydraulically delivered classified tailings sands to provide ground support in large mining operations is still widespread despite recent developments of alternate backfilling methods and materials. The major disadvantages of the use of hydraulic fill are the costs and risks associated with slurry delivery. The main risk is that of bulkhead failure resulting from sand liquefaction due to insufficient operational control or due to dynamic loading from earthquake or rockburst. That risk may be eliminated by the pouring of a stiff cemented sand plug in the base of each stope prior to continuous fill pouring in that stope. An additional advantage of cemented plugs is that massive bulkheads are not needed. Instead, a temporary (removable and reusable) bulkhead can be used for plug forming.Physical model studies of fill pressures on a temporary bulkhead were carried out in a 3 m radius centrifuge facility. Fill pouring in-flight was carried out in order to model prototype stress paths. The results indicate that the average bulkhead pressure is likely to be less than 10 kPa under normal operating conditions and less than 20 kPa under the poorest anticipated operating conditions which include smooth walls, high slimes content and high water-content slurries. A portable bulkhead consisting of a central core and a surrounding sealing bladder was modelled and found to be effective. The use of different sizes of cores allowed the stress distribution adjacent to these bulkheads to be evaluated."

"'Optimisation' has become a catchcry among many mining companies looking to tell the market how mining businesses will be improved and shareholder value increased. Consequently, the term 'optimisation' has been adopted by many service providers as they look to assist mining companies in achieving their objectives. But the explosion of services and products being offered with the label 'optimisation' has created some confusion. Mining companies ask for help in 'optimising' and service providers offer their assistance because they have a product that has the word 'optimisation' in its title. This is of course an over-simplification, but not by much! The authors' discussions in recent years with both mining companies and service providers have uncovered a number of very different definitions of optimisation.This paper provides a framework for identifying the scope and approach of different mining optimisation products and services, particularly the distinction between optimisation of components of the operation and the business as a whole. The different types of business optimisation are discussed, highlighting the failings of the mining industry's typical approach of strategy selection (as opposed to strategy optimisation). Mining business optimisation is discussed as a wicked problem, with the implication of this on how strategy optimisation models should be used and what the objectives of a business optimisation study should be.Case studies are also included to illustrate how fully flexible strategy optimisation models have been applied to assist decision-makers understand the impacts of changes in one part of the operation on the whole mining and treatment process, from geological models to the sale of product to customers.CITATION:Kahler, D B and Hall, B E, 2016. In this study, 3.1 mm thick Ti-5553 (Ti-5Al-5V-5Mo-3Cr) butt joints were autogenously welded using a 4 kW continuous wave Nd:YAG laser. The effect of welding speed and defocusing distance on the weld quality was investigated in terms of the surface morphology, welding defects, microstructure and hardness. Welds with full penetration were achieved at a defocusing distance ranging from -1 mm to 0 mm and welding speeds from 2.25 to 6.0 m/min. Underfill and porosity were the two main defects most frequently observed but within the optimum process window these defects could be maintained to meet aerospace specification tolerances. The fusion zone (FZ) consisted entirely of retained beta with a refined dendritic morphology. Compared to the bimodal alpha (a) + beta (ß) microstructure of the base metal (BM), the dissolution of the a phase was observed in the heat affected zone (HAZ), which led to an 11 % decrease in hardness from the BM to the FZ. To determine the tensile properties of the welded samples, an automated 3D deformation measurement system was used to measure the local strain in the weld region. The yield strength (YS) and ultimate tensile strength (UTS) increased with increasing welding speed with a highest joint efficiency of 75 % being achieved, albeit with a concomitant reduction in the ductility.

Pipe canopies continue to gain momentum as a reliable methodology for construction of excavations below critical facilities with minimal surface settlement tolerances, such as railroads or roadways. Two tunnel projects designed by Kilduff Underground Engineering in the Salt Lake City, UT area, each at varying stages of completion, had project design criteria for selection of a tunneling methodology to minimize surface settlement. Both projects consist of a pedestrian tunnel, one crossing beneath a major roadway in downtown Salt Lake City and the second beneath UPRR tracks. Both projects were in difficult, coarse alluvium/fan ground conditions with project criteria that resulted in minimal cover above the tunnel. For each project, a pre-support pipe canopy was designed, requiring the placement of steel, canopy pipes driven the extent of the tunnel length. The pipe canopy is installed using a trenchless technology and then excavated with SEM tunneling and shoring provided by traditional support of excavation methods. The pipe canopy pre-support method offers a low-impact method to install an underpass beneath critical structures by adding significant stiffness to the subgrade to mitigate surface settlement during the main tunnel excavation sequence. These case studies seek to communicate the challenges associated with pipe canopy installation in site-specific ground conditions and explains how these challenges were overcome. This paper aims to define the project risks and describes the pipe canopy methodology as a viable solution to mitigate surface settlement in low cover tunneling scenarios.

Confirmation that acid drainage (AD) was a significant environmental issue for the Australian minerals industry came in 1992 with the first national workshop on the topic. Subsequently the extent of AD was documented in a national survey published in 1997. The recommendations arising out of that survey served as a platform for actions by government, industry and industry-support organisations such as the Australian Centre for Mining Environmental Research (ACMER) to enable more effective prevention and management of AD. This paper briefly documents the extent of AD in the industry, the government regulations and guidelines for AD management, industry initiatives, the role of ACMER and other organisations in assisting industry through research and technology transfer, and the efforts being made to deal with AD at derelict mines. Future management of AD in the industry will be assisted by the linkage of Australia (through ACMER) into the International Network for Acid Prevention (INAP) which is facilitating the interchange of knowledge on AD as well as coordinating global research on the topic.

[Improvements in refractories for high-temperature service have made possible the use of higher temperature in many processes. Consequently, it sometimes is desirable to use gases heated above 1,600° F., and for moderate rates of gas flow, there gases can be heaters best with pebble heaters. Pebble heaters of the stationary-bed type in which the chanber was lined with mullite brick and pebbles of pure alumina served as the heat-exchange medium have been used recently to heat the air blown into an experimental blast furnace4/ These pebble heaters worked well and made it possible to use air temperature up to 2,500° F. at the tuyere of the furnace. Since little has been published on this type of gas heater, a review of the construction on employed and operating data should assist in selecting applications and designing units.]

The characterisation of the flotation kinetic response in future mining deposits is important because the flotation response is affected by changes in ore mineralogy. Current methods for characterising the flotation response of different ore types, such as the JK floatability index test (JKFIT) methodology, require at least 10 kg of feed material. In geometallurgical applications, this material is taken from core samples. Core samples are generally obtained using specialised drills and are limited in nature. Thus, it would be beneficial to develop a laboratory technique that required less sample material but still characterised the flotation response of different ore types. The JK mineral separation index (JKMSi) is a small-scale flotation test that requires significantly less feed material (10 g of sample/data point). This study aims to investigate the JKMSi system kinetics and to validate this technique using the JKFIT proven methodology. The JKMSi flotation kinetics were manipulated by varying selected system parameters. The relationship between these parameters and mineral recovery was used to obtain floatability characteristics of the ore. For an ore sample containing chalcopyrite and pyrite, it was found that the chalcopyrite floatability parameters determined from both the JKMSi and JKFIT tests were of the same order of magnitude and the mass fractions of the fast, slow and non-floating components were similar. For pyrite, the floatability parameters were not of the same order of magnitude, but modifications to the test procedure have been identified, which may correct this.CITATION:Morgan, S, Bradshaw, D J and Schwarz, S, 2012. Construction of a new underground parking structure in State College, Pennsylvania, is situated on a site constrained by limited ROW and required excavations ranging in depth from 25 ft to 40 ft. Additional complications included busy surface streets, an active intersection, and numerous underground utilities that could not be disrupted by construction activities. To combat these challenges, an innovative approach for earth retention was designed that combined multiple types of retention systems. The overall system included alternating sections of soil nail walls and a hybrid system of soldier pile walls (consisting of micropiles) that were partially restrained by a soil nail wall in the lower portions of the excavation. Further, due to the limited space within the property limits that inhibited the length of the permanent nails, the wall design team collaborated with the project designers to develop a solution such that the completed wall became an integral part of the final design/construction of the underground parking structure. INTRODUCTION HERE at State College is a mixed-use, high-rise building in State College, Pennsylvania. The 12-strory building has up to 3 levels of below-grade parking, with the above-grade levels consisting of residential and commercial/retail space. The existing property was a parking lot bound by the streets Calder Way to the north, Garner Street to the east, East Beaver Avenue to the south, and Heister Street to the west. The overall property sloped approximately 20 ft in elevation from southeast to northwest. Excavation for the below-grade levels extended 21 ft to 36 ft (6.4 m to 11 m) below street level. During design-development phases of the project, it became evident that due to subsurface conditions and right-of- way limitations, conventional construction techniques would not be feasible. The full perimeter of the excavation would require earth retention including the weak shale bedrock along the bottom of the excavation. The project developer (CA Ventures) and general contractor (Brinkmann) coordinated with the specialty contractor and wall design engineer to find a solution. At this time, Coastal Drilling East (specialty contractor) and Wood Environment & Infrastructure Solutions (wall design engineer) became involved. The project developer and general contractor were aware they needed an earth retention system, but given the many variables the project faced, a single, straightforward solution would not work in this application.

The Alan Wood BOF Shop consists of two 140 ton furnaces with a rated yearly capacity of 1-1/4 million ingot tons, he hot metal for the BOF Shop is supplied by two 18 foot blast furnaces which produce an average of 2000 tons per day, To achieve the rated ingot ton capacity with this limited supply of hot metal, the preheating of scrap is necessary. This is accomplished in the furnace by using an oxygen-natural gas burner. Piping Arrangement The natural gas and oxygen are piped into the Shop through 8-inch lines to their respective valving stations. As can be seen from Figure 1, the flow of natural gas passes through a flow control valve which is common to both furnaces, after which it divides into two 6-inch lines forming two identical and independent gas control lines, one for each furnace.

IN MAY, 1930, G. LaBine and E. C. St. Paul, prospect¬ing round the southeastern shore of Great Bear Lake, in the North West Territories of Canada, discovered pitchblende at what is now LaBine Point. At the same time, they also found native silver in a small sheared break on an island lying off the point. Late in 1930, samples of the pitchblende were sent to the Mines Branch, at Ottawa. The material consisted of several fair-sized slabs of botryoidal pitchblende banded with a brownish quartz. A small amount of chalcopyrite was visible as small particles and fine veinlets, and the pieces were rather heavily stained a yellowish-green by secondary copper-uranium salts. Analyses were run in the Mines Branch Ore Dressing Laboratories on two samples, and small-scale concentration tests were made on one of them. The results of this work were published in a Memorandum Series report (No. 48) of the Mines Branch, in March, 1931.

INTRODUCTION THE problem of mechanization is one of the most vital in the minds of Alberta coal operators today. In these times of constantly increasing operating costs, any way of decreasing the cost of a ton of coal must be explored to the limit. There seems no better field for such effort than the successful application of power to the mining and loading of coal. We are fortunate in having neighbours to the south who have made .remarkable progress in recent times along these lines. Higher tonnages per man have resulted in higher wages to the employee and lower cost to the employer. It might seem that our problems could be solved merely by imitating our neighbours. Unfortunately, neither practice nor experience substantiate this conclusion. It is with the purpose of reviewing our accomplishments, as compared with practice in the United States, and at the request of the Prgoramme Committee for this meeting, that this paper is written. The Committee believes that such a general discussion and comparison may well lead to further advances in our mining methods. SUMMARY OF PRACTICE IN THE UNITED STATES A visit to the highly mechanized coal mines of the United States is always most instructive and encouraging.

This report summarizes the principal activities and significant results of the Bureau of Mines respirable dust research program since passage of the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 and the Federal Mine Safety and Health Amendments Act of 1977. This program has investigated new and improved techniques and equipment to reduce or prevent the formation of dust during the cutting cycle; to dilute, suppress, or collect airborne dust generated during mining, handling, and processing; and to improve the measurement of dust levels for evaluation of engineering controls and for enforcement of Federal dust standards. The report is intended for mining industry dust control specialists and other interested parties. It includes a brief summary of the program to date, a section on future research plans and goals, and a list of publications resulting from the Bureau's respirable dust program.
