En esta perspectiva, el presente trabajo describe las herramientas utilizadas en Southern Perú Cooper Corporation para el logro de la calidad de trabajo a través del incremento de la productividad y control de los costos. Para ello, se han utilizado herramientas como: la recolección de datos, visualización de datos, diagramas de Pareto y análisis de beneficios. Asimismo, para una óptima efectividad del equipo deben mantenerse registros precisos de la operación del equipo.

Improved practice resulting from recent changes in the method of supplying compressed air and in pneumatic drilling equipment used in secondary drilling and in development work at the Morenci mine of the Phelps Dodge Corp., has resulted in improved safety conditions, as well as in a reduced cost per foot of drilling. A large stationary compressor installed outside the mining area and the compressed-air pipelines in the mine were replaced by portable compressor units. A self-propelled, self-contained drilling unit was obtained for drilling large footages where short moves were involved. Large wagon-drill units were replaced by faster and lighter drill machines and conventional bits by carbide insert bits. The safe practices employed in air drilling and in the related blasting and scaling operations have contributed to an excellent safety record at this mine. The complete sets of instructions listed in the company codes of safe practice aid materially in training employees.

This '90s 'Public Relations spin' approach, usually backed up by scientific data, technical reports and graphs outlining risk probability and the impact potential on people and communities, is being challenged. Challenged by communities who have greater access to information, demand greater levels of transparency and corporate responsibility of large corporate operations and possess greater awareness of the communities they live in.   The growth of the environmental movement, of anti-globalisation, anti corporatism, apprehension of a large corporate's ability to deal with community issues, and a lack of faith in the abilities of regulators to regulate corporate activities, means our industry faces challenges on multiple fronts. It must now be able to address these from a personal/community perspective if it is to remain relevant within communities.   One of the keys to this is linking the internal activities and responsibilities to the externals concerns and demands for higher levels of operation and care.   This presentation draws on Corporate Public Affairs trends, functions and approaches and the application to External Affairs activities within Newmont Waihi Gold's operations in Waihi and regional exploration activities throughout the Hauraki Goldfields.   The approach presented works on the philosophy that communities don't necessarily have to like what we do, but should be able to identify and recognise the way in which we involve them in decision making, communicate our intentions and respond to issues.

The viability, self-reliance and resilience of small communities are perennial challenges in regional Australia. Recent developments in Australian mining regions seek to govern the minerals industry in a more holistic way that contributes to sustainable futures for affected communities in different contexts. In some areas of the State of Queensland land use conflicts and the cumulative impacts of multiple projects and activities across time and space have come to the fore. In more isolated regions of Western Australia the dominant issues relate to overstretching people, infrastructure and services in predominantly mining towns. In both cases, there is an ambition for regional towns with a strong extractive industry presence to transition into desirable, liveable and affordable cities with a diversified economy. The paper analyses two strategies - the Pilbara Plan in Western Australia, and the Sustainable Resource Communities Policy in Queensland - to identify how these governance instruments are contributing to sustainable development.

The mechanical properties of a low carbon low alloy steel in the austenite and _-ferrite regions have been examined by thermal-tensile tests using a Gleeble-1500D system at temperatures in the range 600oC to 1300oC and at a strain rate of 10-3/s; these being the conditions that apply to the unbending operation during the continuous casting of steel. The yield strength and tensile strength of steel decreased with increasing test temperature and the embrittlement zone occurred in the temperature range 800oC to 970oC. In the embrittlement zone, the fracture surfaces and microstructures of the tensile specimens were examined by scanning electron microscope. The results showed that the cause of the embrittlement at 950oC in which the minimum %R of A was around 36% is the second phase particles precipitated along the _ grain boundary during deformation leading to inter-granular brittle fracture.

Coupling between deformation processes and rock permeability is a major factor influencing the architecture of fluid migration and the localisation of ore deposition in several types of hydrothermal ore systems in middle to upper crustal regimes. Permeability in many hydrothermal systems is controlled by a dynamic competition between deformation-induced porosity-creation processes and porosity-destruction processes. Localisation of deformation within faults, fractures and shear zones leads to flow localisation, with large-scale flow systems forming when active faults and shear zones link to create percolation networks. Numerical modelling techniques are used to explore the growth of fracture networks and evolution of network connectivity during progressive deformation. Initial results indicate that networks reach a percolation threshold at very low strains. Near the percolation threshold, flow is localised along a small proportion of the total fracture population and favours localised ore deposition. At higher strains, flow is distributed more widely throughout the fracture population and may provide reduced potential for production of high-grade deposits. The distribution of mesothermal gold deposits along a small subset of the total population of co-active faults and shear zones in the Archaean Yilgarn Craton in Western Australia indicates that some hydrothermal systems maintain themselves near the percolation threshold for a substantial part of the lifetime of the system. Fluid-driven growth of fault/fracture/shear networks may lead them to self-organise near the percolation threshold.

There are no producing or developing mines or active mining claims in the Deschutes Canyon RARE II study area. Only two prospects were found; they have no identified potential for mineral resources. Thin diatomite deposits occur in the Pliocene Madras Formation. Development of sand and gravel deposits in the area could not favorably compete with similar deposits in the surrounding area which are closer to points of use. By mid-1982, active oil and gas lease applications covered about 25 percent of the area, a reduction from nearly 100 percent in early 1981. No holes were drilled for oil and gas exploration. INTRODUCTION Personnel of the Bureau of Mines, Western Field Operations Center conducted a mineral investigation of the Deschutes Canyon RARE II area during the summer of 1982. The area, about 10 mi (16 km) southwest of Madras, Oregon, covers 10,890 acres (4,407 ha) in the Crooked River National Grasslands (fig. 1). The Deschutes River has incised a deep canyon into the north sloping elevated lava plain near the transitional boundary of the High Lava Plains and the Deschutes-Umatilla Plateau geomorphic divisions (Baldwin, 1964, p. 20).

The Murray Basin is being heralded as the next major mineral sands province in Australia. Already exploration programs have delineated extensive commercial deposits and several companies are progressing with plans to produce zircon, rutile and ilmenite in the Basin. As these deposits are developed consideration will need to be given to several key issues of the Murray Darling Basin; the availability of fresh water and management of salinity in the area being two of them. In this paper ideas being developed in CSIRO that link the processing of mineral sands with the salinity problem in the Basin are presented. The proposal presented here is to process saline water to produce industrial minerals with large volume applications and to produce value-added products from the mineral sands in the Basin using reagents produced from the saline waters. Processes to produce titania pigment and zirconia consume chlorine, caustic soda, soda ash and hydrochloric acid, all derivatives of salt (sodium chloride). There may be a good economic incentive if these processing plants were located in the close vicinity of each other.

Lower Miocene Maryville Coal Measures at Waitewhena Coalfield, in the Taranaki coal region, include seams of sub-bituminous coal up to 4 m thick. During coalfield exploration Fletcher Challenge Ltd drilled ten cored holes, all of which encountered at least one seam. Coal quality is variable. Ash ranges from six to 12 per cent and sulphur from 0.5 to three per cent. A basal seam, overlying the Lower Mokau Sandstone, appears to extend throughout the area under investigation. A rider seam, of variable thickness, closely overlies the main seam in most drillholes. The rider converges with the main seam to the north and vertical trends in coal properties suggest that the seams are united in some locations. A less extensive seam sometimes occurs at the top of the coal measures beneath the Upper Mokau Sandstone. The lithostratigraphy of the intervening coal measures is complex, and coexistence of fluviodeltaic, lagoonal/lacustrine, and marine depositional environments is provisionally inferred. Lateral variations in coal properties (clastic derived ash, volatile matter, inertinite, hydrogen), thickness of the sedimentary parting between the basal seam and rider, texture of the coal measure sediments, and distribution of the upper seam all indicate persistence of a relatively low lying northeast-trending zone which may have been structurally controlled. Available data indicate that coal measure accumulation was terminated by marine transgression from north to south.

fhis paper describes investigations into drainage of gas from the solid to control outbursts. Initial studies conducted on drainage of shear zones showed that, given enough time, these can be successfully drained. Once drained, they can be intersected and driven through without any activity of outbursts. The results of programme of investigations to determine parameters for drainage from the solid show that gas flow rates from the Bulli Seam on the average are about 2 litres/min/metre length of borehole. But when shear zones are intersected, the flow rates could be as high as 8 litres/min/ metre length of hole. Shear zones can be picked up from pressure measurements 50 - 60 m away and this could give sufficient time to drill through these zones and drain them in advance. Systematic drainage of Bulli Seam at West Cliff Colliery could eliminate or reduce frequency of outbursts considerably. At present drainage holes are being drilled systematically in the seam, with drainage installations on the surface. Gas purity of 80% methane is being delivered at the surface plant.

The North 27th St. ISS Extension tunnel will, under present plans, be the last constructed section of Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District?s (MMSD?s) existing deep tunnel system. The 6.5 m (21 ft) finished diameter tunnel is approximately 3,260 m (10,590 ft) long and is located in NE Milwaukee County. When disputes over the pro-cesses to be used in owner-directed pre-excavation grouting in rock threatened the completion date stipulated between MMSD and the State of Wisconsin, the MMSD and J.F. Shea, the contractor, entered into a unique agreement. Shea accepted responsibility for all shaft and tunnel grouting and water control during the project in exchange for settlement of claims related to grout quantities and perceived delays. This significantly reduced risk for the MMSD and helped ensure the stipulated completion of the project.

The separation and purification of uranium from either nitric acid or hydrochloric acid media tan be accomplished by using either solvent extraction or ion-exchange. Over the past two years at Los Alamos, emerging programs are focused on recapturing the expertise required to do limited, small-quantity processing of enriched uranium. During this period of time, we have been investigating ion-exchange as a method for extraction/purification of uranium from acidic media. In addition, waste stream polishing is associated with this effort in order to achieve more complete removal of the uranium prior to recycle of the acid. Extraction chromatography has been demonstrated' to further polish the uranium from both nitric and hydrochloric acid media thus allowing for a more complete recovery of the actinide material and creation of less waste during the processing steps. We will discuss contact experiments for evaluation of eleven different resins for uranium removal from nitric acid, the evaluation (again by contact experiments) of uranium elution from the ion-exchange media by various chemicals, and small-scale experiments for the removal of 235U from nitric acid. Larger-scale (100-gram) flow experiments using depleted uranium, were done after the small-scale evaluation Of the selected resin. A discussion is also included concerning the shortcomings of the contact experiments and how the flow experiments were modified in order to overcome these problems. We will also discuss the application of ion-exchange for some specific process needs at Los Alamos Contact experiments were used to evaluate some commercially available solvent-impregnated resins in addition to evaluation of several resins of this type synthesized in our laboratory. These experiments' involved both nitric and hydrochloric acid media. The data from these experiments will be used to determine the column size and' amount of resin required to polish the waste stream produced by the ion-exchange process described above. Small-scale flow experiments will be described and data given on the mass balances achieved using this two step process. Future work for evaluation of new ion-exchange and solvent-impregnated resins as well as the search for new eluants will be discussed. Other future experiments for both processes, including large-scale experiments, will be discussed in detail.

Mechanical twins were produced in electron-beam melted columbium by high-speed impact at room temperature and by slow or fast compression at -196°C. The composition plane of the twins was { 112} and the shear direction was <111>. Notches in the twin bands often corresponded to traces of {110) of the matrix and appeared to be untwinned regions. Markings within the twin bands were interpreted as resulting from {110} slip in the twins. THERE has been much work in recent years concerning plastic deformation by glide, and the dislocation theory relating to glide has reached a relatively high degree of development. On the other hand, there have been fewer studies of deformation by mechanical twinning, and understanding of this process is far from satisfactory. This method of deformation is of interest for at least two reasons. First, it provides a mechanism in addition to glide for the relief of stresses, and, in the bcc and hexagonal close-packed metals may result in significant amounts of plastic flow. Secondly, there is the possibility that twins may act as barriers for dislocation movement, resulting in pile-ups which could nucleate cracks. As might be expected, the bulk of the literature on mechanical twinning in the bcc metals is concerned with iron. A good summary of the work done prior to 1954 is contained in the book by all.&apos; Recently the refractory bcc metals have become increasingly important. Limited studies have shown that tantalum,2,3 molybdenum,4,5 vanadium,6,7 tungsten,&apos; and columbium9-11 deform by mechanical twinning under some conditions. Alloys of molybdenum with rhenium and tungsten with rhenium show extensive deformation by twinning at room temperature.I2-l4 Most of these studies have dealt primarily with mechanical properties at low temperatures or have shown the existence of twins, and there is only a small amount of information concerning the conditions under which they form. The subject of the present paper is the formation of twins under stress in columbium with a consideration of their morphology. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The material used for these studies was taken from an ingot of columbium which had been melted twice by the electron-be am-method. The analysis of the ingot was (in ppm): B < 1, C = 10, Fe < 100, The cast ingot contained very large grains, and it was possible to obtain single-crystal prisms which measured from ¼ to 3/4 in. on a side. A few experiments were conducted on polycrystalline plate which was prepared by rolling material from the same ingot at room temperature and annealing at 1000 in a dynamic vacuum of 10-6 mm Hg. This gave a plate in which the grains had an average diameter of 3 mm. After the specimens were cut from the ingot, the six faces were metallographically polished and elec-tropolished to remove all traces of cold work. Most of the observations were made on the surfaces of the deformed specirllens without further treatment. Occasionally, etching after deformation was desirable. In these cases, an etchant of the composition 50 parts H2O, 5 parts HNO3 25 parts HF, and 10 parts H2SO4 was found to delineate the twins very well. Unless considerable care was taken to ensure the removal of all disturbed metal left by the mechanical polishing, etching failed to reveal many of the features discussed in this; paper. The specimen&apos;s were deformed either by impact or slow compression at 77°K (liquid-nitrogen coolant), 198°K (dry ice and acetone coolant), and 298°K. The impact load was delivered by a hammer except in one case where the load was delivered by a bullet. Slow compression was carried out on a hydraulic testing machine equipped with a chamber to hold the coolant. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS It has been generally believed that the conditions favoring the formation of deformation twins are large grains, low temperature, and impact loading. In fact, Barrett and Bakish2 found twins in tantalum only after impact deformation at 77°K, and Adams, Roberts, and Smallman10 observed twins in columbium only at 20 For these reasons, the initial experiments of this study used impact loading. Hammer blows caused many bands resembling twins in single crystals a.t 77" but not at 198°K. Only a few slip lines were observed on any of the single-crystal specimens of this study—essentially all the deformation occurred by twinning. The appearance of the twins on the as-deformed surface is shown in Fig. 1. Although both Figs. 1(a) and l(b) are photomicrographs of twins taken at the same magnification and from the same crystal, they are startlingly different in appearance. The Weda Bay nickel and cobalt laterite deposits on Halmahera Island, Republic of Indonesia were first drilled in May 1996 by Strand Minerals Pte Ltd (Strand). Subsequent exploration has delineated four large laterite provinces, parts of which have been diamond drilled to outline an indicated nickel resource of 59.9 Mt of 1.51 per cent Ni and 0.09 per cent Co within a total indicated and inferred resource of 117 Mt of 1.36 per cent Ni and 0.12 per cent Co. The project is held as a Seventh Generation Contract of Work (COW) by PT Weda Bay Nickel, which is jointly owned by Strand (90 per cent) and PT Aneka Tambang (ten per cent). Strand is a wholly owned subsidiary of Weda Bay Minerals Inc, a company listed on the Toronto and Alberta Stock Exchanges in Canada. Halmahera is located in the north-eastern part of the Indonesian archipelago at the convergent junction of three major plates and is a region of considerable tectonic and geological complexity. The western arms of Halmahera form a classic volcanic island arc while the central region and eastern arms contain ophiolite complexes and interlayered sediments. The extensive areas of laterite discovered at Weda Bay have developed over serpentinised harzburgites and dunites of pre-Cretaceous age. Weathering of these rocks has produced laterite profiles that are enriched in nickel and cobalt. There are three economically mineralised laterite types, namely limonites, ferruginous saprolites and saprolites and all are amenable to rapid pressure acid leaching with recoveries of 98 per cent nickel and 94 per cent cobalt in less than 20 minutes.

The petroleum industry has not attempted to operate in a harsher area. The Labrador coastline is exposed to North Atlantic storms and icebergs year’round, Arctic pack ice occurs up to six months of each year. However, there is no doubt that, if sufficient hydrocarbon potential is outlined, development will proceed."

Introduction The introduction of teleremote systems to underground mining can provide a significant improvement in the performance of a mine when compared with conventional mining techniques. This paper presents the concepts of teleremote mining in a case study showing how the systems work and the competitive advantage autonomation of mining techniques will provide for underground metal mining operations into the future. This paper is divided into two sections: the Mining Automation Program and What is next? On January 1st 1996 Inco Limited, Tamrock Oy, DYNO Explosives Group and CANMET formed a consortium for the development of teleremote mining equipment called the ‘Mining Automation Program’ or MAP. This program included a five-year research and development agreement that combines the talents of the above organizations to create mining equipment and systems for autonomating mining. The projects are based on the communication system currently sold and marketed by Automated Mining Systems Limited. The main components of the program investigated the development of a positioning and navigation module, autonomated systems using teleremote techniques for development and stoping, and software systems to support the use of this equipment. The program included the establishment of a test mine, at Inco’s 175 Orebody near Copper Cliff North Mine. This facility was unique allowing collaboration of companies and research organizations inthe design and testing of techniques and equipment used to apply autonomation to mining. Since the inception of the project other research alliances have been added to enhance the program. These include the application of ground support (Meyco/ Master Builders), muck pile recognition, the broadening of telecommunications links (PRECARN Associates Inc.-MALTA project) and the collection and processing of drilling core through the automated diamond drilling project (J.K.S. Boyles). MAP began as an idea a number of years ago with the fundamental question ‘Can an ore-body be profitably mined through autonomation?’ The concept was to design mining equipment and systems that would allow the teleremote operation of a mine. Automation was only one componentof this much larger teleremote mining issue. To start with, it was essential to prove or disprove the feasibility of this concept. The fundamental requirements are: • Telecommunications • Positioning • Navigation • Equipment • Software • Electronics • Mining Engineering • Organization. Each of these had to be considered. Technically, the feasibility of the project hinged on the successful development of a high capacity communication network, an accurate underground positioning system, a navigation system and finally the electronics and software that could integrate these. Mining equipment that could perform all the mining functions was the next requirement, along with explosive supplies that could be delivered to the holes teleremotely. Whatever the systems developed, they must be able to work in both bulk and selective mining situations and in varying conditions within a mine. Finally, the organizational issues of a change from our current method of operation to teleremote mining had to be understood. After five years of research and development the answer to the question ‘Can an orebody be profitably mined using autonomation techniques?’ is YES! There are still hurdles to overcome, however, the basic premise has been proven. The development and production of underground tunnels and stopes has been done. There have been interesting outcomes in terms of reduced effort to accomplish mining and the total time to mine. Definitions •Automationis the process by which a machine or system is run continuously including the ability for the system to self-correct. •Autonomationis the same as automation except that the process does not self-correct. •Teleremote operation is the operation of mining equipment over a network from any location out of line-of-sight of the machine. •Equipment Automationis the addition of technology to a machine that allows for unmanned operation of a machine and thus enhances the productivity of the operator. For example, a guidance system that allows a load-haul-dump to drive by itself, thus freeing the operator for other tasks. •Teleremote mining describes a mine process that combines the use of teleremote operation (potentially with some automation), positioning and process engineering, monitoring and control. •Tamrock DataSoloTMis a computerized drilling rig as shown in Figure 1. •Tamrock DataMini™ is a computerized development drill rig used for drifting and construction tunneling as shown in Figure 2.•Tamrock Toro 450™ is a LHD (Figure 3).

THE cyanide plant of the Cariboo Gold Quartz Mining Company, Limited, at Wells, B.C:, in the Barkerville section of the Cariboo mining division, was erected during the latter part of 1932 and placed in operation in January, 1933. The initial capacity of the plant was about 50 tons daily. This was increased to 100 tons at the end of 1934 and stepped-up to 150 tons in September, 1935. It is expected that further plant extensions, for milling a total of 200 tons daily, will be required during the early part of 1936. Recent additions to the mill have been so planned as to permit ready expansion to 275 tons daily when underground development warrants the milling of this tonnage. It is the purpose of this paper to outline briefly the steps taken to bring the plant to its present capacity and to comment on possibilities for further plant expansion. The gold in Cariboo Gold Quartz ore occurs as free gold in the quartz and on pyrite surfaces. Some of it is very finely divided, specks l/10,000 inch having been observed microscopically, according to Dr. G. Hanson. In addition to pyrite, which comprises probably 15 to 20 per cent of the mill feed, galena and sphalerite are present, with small amounts of arseno-pyrite and chalcopyrite. Sulphobismuthites-chiviatite, galenobismutite, cosalite, etc.-occur more or less frequently in certain sections of the mine. Following tests on Cariboo ore by the Mines Branch, Department of Mines, at Ottawa, treatment of the ore by straigh t cyanidation was recommended and a 50-ton plant employing continuous counter-current decantation was erected. This plant was built as a pilot mill, the intention being to erect a larger mill after metallurgical treatment had proved successful over an extended period. This original installation, however, has been enlarged and retained as an operating unit, additional equipment being added to it as capacity increases have been required.

The fast tracked mine development strategy attempts to blend feasibility studies and engineering/commissioning functions into a streamlined process. In this compressed process, environmental issues are difficult to control with respect to the optimisation of operational environmental performance. This paper presents a standard mine development process with specific focus on environmental issues, and contrasts this against Rio TintoÆs recent fast track experiences on the Hail Creek project (Australia), the Baranj project (India) and the Gokwe North project (Zimbabwe).

Serpentinite is an ultra basic and metamorphic rock consisting mainly of magnesium, calcium and silicon oxides. The rock under study is a host rock of chromite mine located in Andorinha, BA. The objective of this paper is to evaluate the rock&apos;s physical and chemical characteristics to be used as an additional fertilizer of acid soils. After comminution, rock samples were submitted to chemical analysis, XRD, SEM-EDS and TGA. Afterwards, particle size distribution was determined. Result analysis confirms that our rock consists mainly of dolomite, calcite and diopside. According to the result obtained, it can be said that the serpentinite rock has promising applications in agriculture for the correction and additional fertilization of acid soils. However, it is necessary to study the characteristics of the rock such as its dangers and toxicity as well as evaluate them according to the legislation for corrective acidity.

The Federal Bureau of Mines has conducted research in support of the National Aeronautical and Space Administration&apos;s (NASA) Apollo program to acquire fundamental scientific and engineering knowledge of lunar-mineral resources for NASA&apos;s Office of Advanced Research and Technology. Equipment and techniques were developed to conduct soil shear tests in a simulated lunar environment. Shear tests performed with this equipment in ultrahigh vacuum and controlled laboratory atmosphere showed that simulated lunar soil increased in strength in the simulated lunar environment.
