CUBA'S lateritic iron ores, occurring on the northern coast of that island, though known to the Spaniards. did not receive any general attention until the close of the Spanish-American War. Preliminary studies of these deposits at that time indicated that the limonite contained small percentages of nickel and chrome, and it ryas subsequently discovered that although the average nickel content was only approximately 0.6 per certain limited areas of ore were suffiniently high in nickel to be considered commercial provided a suitable process fur its recovery could be developed. Early in 1937, Pardners Mines Corp. began a series of investigations which led to the development of such a process. Coincidentally, this company acquired option' on certain properties in the Levisa Bay and Moa Bay regions and conducted a systematic campaign of exploration by test pits and hand-auger holes in the course of which an aggregate of 90.000.000 tons of ore was developed in eight deposits.

Traditionally the feed to coal preparation plants was de-slimed at 0,5 mm. The +0,5 mm size fraction was processed via dense-medium cyclones and the -0,5 mm size fraction was beneficiated with froth flotation, water-only cyclones or spirals. With the introduction of large diameter cyclones, the aperture sizes of de-sliming screens have progressively increased to about 3 mm in the belief that the larger cyclones are not able to effectively beneficiate coal which has a particle size below the ?breakaway? size. The efficiency of separation in the large dense-medium cyclones is improved by presenting a coarser feed to the units. At the same time, the capacity of the de-sliming screens is increased due to the larger screen apertures and in effect, the throughput capacity of the dense-medium section is increased. The 3 x 0,5 mm size fraction, which was previously processed in the dense-medium cyclones, is now added to the fine coal size fraction and processed by water-only methods such as Teetered Bed Separators (TBS) and spirals. Whether this practice is the most economical way to process the 3 x 0,5 mm size fraction requires further thought since the best processing route for the 3 x 0,5 mm size fraction will depend on a number of factors, amongst which are: o The washability of the coal and the amount of near-density material o Processing efficiency o Specification of the required product o The price paid by the customer for the product o The cost of processing the coal Breakaway size The ?breakaway? size is defined as the particle size below which the Epm of the smaller particles starts to decrease significantly. Bosman1 provides an approximate breakaway size versus cyclone diameter (Figure 1). It should be kept in mind though that the Epm of the small particles is a function not only of the cyclone diameter but also of feed pressure, medium density, medium viscosity, particle shape and density, top-size of particles in the feed, etc.

The oxygen activity of the ladle slag determines the reactivity towards the steel during ladle treatment. Therefore, the in situ measurement of the oxygen activity of slags can be an important tool. The applicability of an electrochemical sensor is examined in this work. The sensor measures the electromotive force (EMF) that is established between a sample of the slag phase that is immersed in the liquid steel bath and a reference system (Cr/Cr2O3). Industrial and laboratory experiments demonstrated the capability of the sensor to detect the influence of the slag components on the measured oxygen potential. Comparison of the measured values with thermodynamically calculated values shows that the measured oxygen activity is systematically too low. This was attributed to a reaction of the steel with the slag sample. To investigate this, further lab tests were performed where the slag oxygen activity was measured after the slag had been equilibrated with the steel. The measured values were dependent on the oxygen activity (aO) of the steel. For industrial applications, it is concluded that the aO of the steel should be known and that this value is necessary for the interpretation of the measured values. This paper studies the effect of binder type and content on the early age development of cemented paste backfill (CPB). The early age development of the mixtures is analyzed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDX). These tests show that the early age development of CPB is sensitive to changes in the paste composition. The properties of the CPB depend on the cement content and hydration time. The quantity of hydration products increases with hydration time for all of the mixtures containing cement. However, the high cement content pastes (at least 50% PC) exhibit complete coverage of the PC grains and mine tailings by C-S-H, while the low cement content paste shows scattered coverage of the PC grains and mine tailings and a higher void ratio.

In 1933, R. paris1 published a phase diagram for the entire Mg-Ca-Zn system. He reported the existence of a ternary intermetallic phase, Mg5Zn5Ca2, which formed a quasi-binary with the magnesium solid solution. Since then, no extensive work has been reported on the system. Recently however, indications of the existence of a second ternary in-termetallic phase in equilibrium with the magnesium solid solution led to a reinvestigation of the solid phase equilibria involving the magnesium solid solution. The 335°C (635°F) isothermal section was chosen for study. Metallography and powder X-ray diffraction were selected as the best mutually corroborating methods for determining the solid phase constitution. Seventy-six alloys were prepared from singly sublimed (99.95 pct) magnesium, electrolytic (99.95 pct) zinc and USP calcium. The analyses of some of the alloys are shown in Fig. 1. The alloys were melted in a graphite crucible under a chloride flu and chill cast in a split graphite mold. Dif-fusion couples (see Fig. 2) were prepared by casting molten Mg-20 wt pct Zn alloy around a cylinder of Mg-30 wt pct Ca alloy. The alloy samples and the diffusion couples were sealed under argon in Pyrex vials and annealed in a furnace capable of controlling within 1/2°C of 335°C. At the conclusion of the anneal, the alloy samples were quenched in ice water and the diffusion couples were air cooled. Procedures standard for magnesium alloys were used for metallographic examination. Powder X-ray diffraction patterns were taken on a G. E. camera with a 14.32 cm dim using nickel-filtered copper radiation. The redetermined 335°C (635°) section of the Mg-Ca-Zn phase diagram is shown in Fig. 1. This paper presents the conceptual design of a magnetically-levitated skip for use in an underground mine. A skip is used to move rock from an underground mine to its surface processing facility. Conventionally the skip is raised and lowered by cables, similar to an elevator. In a magnetically-levitated skip, the cable is replaced with a linear induction or synchronous motor to provide propulsion and levitation. Removal of the cables in a magnetically-levitated skip provides many advantages over a conventional system including the ability: to negotiate corners, to travel vertically in the shaft as well as horizontally to the mining face, and to move a very large volume of material using multiple skips in a small shaft. A magnetically-levitated skip is a safer, more environmentally-friendly, productive alternative to conventional skipping. It has the further advantage to decrease haulage distances for underground vehicles.

The professional skills shortage is intensifying, and commentators are predicting a shortfall in supply of qualified professionals for the mining industry, ranging from thousands to tens-of-thousands by 2020 (Tuckwell, 2011; Scoble, 2011; Laurence and Hebblewhite, 2011). Human resources are already stretched, and university graduates arriving in the workplace are often moved rapidly into management positions where there is limited scope to develop their engineering proficiency. This process may well be developing excellent young managers, but our industry is producing fewer excellent young engineers (Munro and Tilyard, 2009). Many believe that it is engineering excellence that is likely to be the key to our industryÆs success in the decade to come. An innovative in-house graduate development program has been created by specialists at the JK Centre in partnership with two mining companies. This program, known as MetSkill«, has been running throughout 2012. Groups of graduates have had to identify a process plant optimisation opportunity and embark on a structured program of data collection and analysis, facilitated by a æteaching teamÆ of researchers and consultants from the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC) and JKTech. This group project culminates in a report-back session to senior company officials. Along the way, a series of short workshops and other activities provide opportunities to work on specialist skills, and support is also offered by senior technical specialists from the companies involved.This paper outlines key features of the MetSkill« program, along with a report-card on progress in 2012 and plans for further program development in 2013.CITATION:Drinkwater, D and Bianco, N, 2012. "With the narrow vein structure of Nova Scotia gold deposits, selective mining is rarely possible and mill heads will be too low (below 0.10 oz per ton of gold) to support a conventional mill of up to 1000 ton per day capacity at present gold prices. The recent operation of a small 100 t.p.d. mill at Cochrane Hill using fine grinding - leaching - filtration supported this assertion. Milling costs exceeded $25.00/ton of feed mainly due to high capital, labour and maintenance costs.Accordingly, since 1981, efforts have been directed towards the development of a cheap gold extraction process in terms of both capital and operating costs. The main criteria is to produce gold below US $200 per oz including all administration, mining and process stages. This paper describes such a process development for Cochrane Hill. LOCATION AND HISTORY OF THE PROPERTYThe Cochrane Hill property is located about 8 miles North of Sherbrooke, N.S. on highway No. 7. Sherbrooke is about 180 miles east of Halifax. Gold was originally discovered at Cochrane Hill in the 1860's. Early work consisted of trenching. In the 1930's a small shaft was sunk to about 80 feet and some tonnage treated using a stamp mill with gravity concentration of gold.Northumberland Mines Ltd. acquired a 70% interest in the property in 1977. Subsequent drilling indicated a potential zone of gold mineralization with a drill-indicated tonnage of one million tons having a grade of 0.07 ounces per ton of gold (all high assays cut to 1 oz) down to a depth of 300 feet recoverable by open pit mining methods. In broad terms, the goldbearing zone is about 50 feet wide and 800 feet long and dips at about 70°."

PZH (Pan Zhi Hua) Iron and Steel (Group) Corporation, the biggest steel company in southwest China, has been using titanium-vanadium-magnetite as the main raw materials for blast furnace iron making processing for over 30 years. One of the problems that has a negative affect on the blast furnace operation is slag foaming. Based on the chemical components of the blast furnace slag-bearing higher TiO2, the foaming properties were studied. The TiO2content, which is calculated according to the total titanium content in all the forms of titanium compound in the slag, in this research is 30% weight per cent. Different forms of titanium compounds have different actions on the slag foaming behaviour that depends on the reduction condition in the blast furnace. The relationships among slag foaming performance and the binary alkalinity of the slag, the content of CaF2, MnO in slag, and the amount of gas injected in slag are investigated. The results show CaF2 and MnO have a stronger anti-foaming affect on the slag, even in the lower percentage. The way to measure high TiO2slag foaming performance and how to eliminate foamy slag are also discussed. Keywords: blast furnace slag bearing TiO2, foamy slag, foaming performance

Stoping is one of the widely adapted methods in underground mining. In this method, fanned or parallel holes are often drilled from a top sill down to a sub- level in the ore zone and blasted ring by ring into a stope for excavation. At Brunswick Mine of Canada, this technique has been used daily in conducting production blasts. However, when mining into the West Ore Zone, it has been identified strategically that a mass stope blast, involving the blasting of rock from the 3-sub level down to the 1-sub level, should be considered to ensure the safe operation and regaining of access to the trapped main ore zone. The challenge of this mass blast lies in the control of ground vibration and precise timing for blasting 800 holes drilled in six blocks from three different levels within 6.5 seconds, to allow sufficient void to be created in each level for the muck moving in order from the upper to the lower levels without bridging. This paper describes stope blast simulations using a discrete element computer code for modeling blast-induced rock displacement in conjunction with a precision electronic programmable delay timing system for various stope geometries including a drop raise blast at the start of the mass blast. The modeling concept is also described in the paper.

Petrographic studies, assay records, and laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometer (LA-ICP-MS) analyses of major sulfides suggest nearly all of the gold at the Ernest Henry Cu-Au deposit occurs in the form of native gold or electrum (95-65 wt.% Au); sylvanite and dissolved gold in cobaltite, chalcopyrite, and pyrite make only minor contributions. LA-ICP-MS analyses of the gold contents of chalcopyrite gave from 8 to 139 ppb (mean = 56 ppb), more than an order of magnitude lower than those experimentally determined in chalcopyrite in equilibrium with native gold at the estimated mineralization temperatures (350°-450°C). Gold content is more variable in pyrite (1-400 ppb, mean = 77 ppb) and highest in narrow growth zones of a subordinate type of complexly zoned pyrite wherein it is associated with elevated As, Ag, Sn, Sb, Te, and Bi. Deposition of gold-electrum was closely associated with, but preceded some of the chalcopyrite deposition, as indicated by microtextures and lower bulk Au:Cu ratios in late-stage chalcopyrite-rich veins. Gold grains have maximum dimensions from <1 to 50 micrometers, and are heterogeneously distributed with most occurring in microscale clusters. Fifty-five out of 76 grains recorded in polished sections are in contact with both chalcopyrite and pyrite, and many of the rest are in sites where such a relationship could exist in the third dimension. The dominant textural sites are intergrowths with chalcopyrite in microveinlets cutting pyrite, and on faces of pyrite grains in contact with chalcopyrite. Scanning electron microscopy, electron microprobe analysis, and proton induced X-ray emission studies show that pyrite associated with gold includes complexly zoned, weakly zoned, arsenian, and arsenic-poor types. The textures are compatible with the possibility that most gold was deposited electrochemically as native metal on pyrite surfaces. The textural distribution of gold has important metallurgical implications given that the ore processing circuits at Ernest Henry and most other sulfide copper mines are designed to exclude pyrite (and arsenic) from concentrates.

"The surface of many concentrate thickeners has traditionally looked like that of a flotation cell. Over the last three years Normandy Golden Grove Concentrator, in partnership with Outokumpu Technology have developed and implemented an innovative breakthrough deaeration technology to address this problem.When installed in the thickener feedline, the system successfully detached air bubbles adhering to the solid particles and removed air bubbles from the feed stream, subsequently presenting a fully deaerated feed to the thickener feedwell.Tests to date have shown an 80% reduction in overflow solids. As a result, costs associated with concentrate loss and measures to recover concentrate that settles in process tanks and ponds have been minimized.MOTIVATIONIt is recognised in mineral processing operations that the entrainment of finely divided air in thickener feeds can cause significant problems in the operation of a thickener. This is particularly the case with thickening of flotation concentrates, in which air bubbles are strongly attached to the mineral particles and are difficult to remove. Such particles attached to fine air bubbles rise to the thickener surface, and hence over the weir and into the thickener overflow. High solids carryover can lead to a direct loss of mineral product, and if the product settles in process water tanks and ponds, the recovery of this product by means of intermittent dredging operations is usually expensive and inconvenient.Many concentrate thickeners are fitted with devices which attempt to alleviate this problem. Froth rings or baffles, skimmers and froth sprays, all play a part in reducing the amount of solids carried over into the overflow. However, many froths are very stable and persist despite these measures. In the worst cases, a thick froth layer forms which builds up to a depth greater than the froth ring, and hence may overflow or pass beneath the ring . Any concentrate that finds its way past the froth ring can also cause blockage of the overflow weir and launder, and has the potential to upset clarification performance by cutting off sections of the overflow handling system. The formation of a froth layer on the thickener also makes it more difficult for the operator to monitor the clarification performance."

In September, a fleet of 363-t (400-st) Liebherr trucks became operational in Brazil and have already begun moving iron ore in Para state. Prior to the arrival of the the trucks the Brazilian fleet relied on trucks up to 218 t (240 st). With the addition of the 363 t (400 st) trucks, the fleet has since experienced the high productivity offered by Liebherr T 282 B trucks.

The mineral sector is a fundamental part of the U.S. economy. It contributes to the real gross domestic product (GDP) at several levels — basic (mining), intermediate processing, manufacturing of finished goods and construction. The real GDP during 2004 increased by 4.4 percent. The nominal GDP was about $11.7 trillion. Housing starts were up by slightly more than 4 percent for the year. And the nation’s unemployment rate decreased to5.5 percent in 2004 from 6 percent in 2003. Interest rates continued to be low (prime rate was 5.25 percent at the end of 2004) but have risen gradually, following rising inflation.

Steady increases in longwall production have required operators to apply greater quantities of ventilating air in an effort to control and dilute respirable dust. Significant increases in shearer speeds necessitate that longwall supports also be advanced at a faster rate. Both of these factors may contribute to overall respirable dust levels on the longwall face because as supports are lowered and advanced, broken material falling from the top of the canopy is entrained directly into the air stream. To address this issue, the Pittsburgh Research Laboratory collected respirable dust samples from four longwall faces to characterize shield-generated dust. This paper investigates the influence of air velocity and shield advance rates on respirable dust levels. Also discussed are engineering controls currently used to reduce shield dust and alternative controls being investigated by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH).

This paper describes preliminary research on the application of Markov Decision Processes (MDP) to Real Option Valuation (ROV) and the optimisation of mine scheduling. The MDP framework is a novel approach to option valuation and scheduling in mining operations. A learning agent is introduced into the valuation process of an open pit, where prices and block ore grades have probabilistic values. The prices are modelled using a mean reverting diffusion process and the block grades using sequential Gaussian simulation. The agent is asked to learn which production parameters should be used in order to maximise the overall value of the project. The introduction of the agent permits a real option approach to mine valuation, such that the value associated with the robustness of a design to uncertainty can be measured. A simulated example is used in which there are ten blocks to be extracted under conditions of grade and price uncertainty. Using policy iteration, an optimal policy is generated and the value of production options is found. The potential financial gains from applying MDPs to mine valuation and optimisation are substantial and warrant further investigation.

"The ceramic industry of the United States has a total yearly manufactured product of nearly half a billion dollars, despite large foreign importation.After careful investigation of the industry by the Bureau of Mines, it is the belief of those in charge that the usefulness of the industry can be greatly enlarged and the importations greatly lessened through the development of processes that will lead to a greater and better development of the ceramic resources of the United States. This will result in a greater industry with more men employed than ever before, and perhaps a world's supremacy in ceramic trade matters.Investigations in behalf of the ceramic industry are being made at the Bureau of Mines experiment ceramic station at Columbus, Ohio, under the supervision of R. T. Stall, superintendent, who reports a number of instances of practical, beneficial cooperation between the industry and the station during the last fiscal year.Graphite to Crucibles:Prior to 1914, practically all graphite crucibles manufactured in the United States were made from Ceylon graphite bonded with German Klingenberg clay. It was the general belief among graphite crucible manufacturers and users that good crucibles could not be made from American bond clays and graphites.Graphite crucibles were essential for melting certain alloys and special steels urgently needed for the manufacture of war materials. The demand for such metals was so great that it created an unprecedented demand for graphite crucibles.After the European war began no Klingenberg clay could be shipped out of Germany. However, it was fortunate for the cyucibly makers that they had large stocks of Klingenberg clay on hand. When the stock of Klingenberg clay became exhausted, it was necessary for the credible makers to turn their attention to American clays. There were no data or other information available to guide the crucible makers in the selection of good bond clays for their crucibles. It was necessary for them to select their clays more or less by ""guess"", which resulted in the period of service or life of graphite crucibles being shortened 15 to as much as 60 per cent."

Over ten million pounds of explosives are used daily to blast rock in mines, quarries and construction projects throughout the United States. Despite the immense volume of explosives used, serious incidents involving the legal use of explosive materials are rare. Unfortunately, when incidents arise they are well publicized, whereas the great majority of blasting projects-even the most challenging ones—quietly occur without incident or public recognition. Although unfair, media coverage focuses on incidents and/or accidents, and as a result skews the public’s perceptions of our industry. These negative perceptions about blasting profoundly effect our work. Most apparent are the community groups who organize to fight blasting work. However, other impacts are more insidious and have long-term effects on our industry. For instance, planning engineers or government agencies often prohibit blasting to avoid the public’s adverse reaction or because of general fear of blasting impacts. Ironically, as regulations and specifications continue to curtail our industry, the net effect is an increase in the cost of rock excavation. As taxpayers, we suffer needlessly by paying more for government funded construction projects. As blasting professionals we are additionally penalized through loss of work.

During 1981, Ecuador&apos;s gross domestic product (GDP) increased by a reported 4.8% in real terms, a slight improvement over that of 1980. In current prices, the CDP in 1981 was estimated at $13.7 billion.2 The inflation rate increased to 15.6% according to official figures, above that of 1980. Ecuador&apos;s production of petroleum increased 3% in 1981 compared with that of 1980. The consortium of Corporación Estat al Petrolera Ecuatoriana (CEPE), the state oil company, and Texaco, Inc., produced almost 98% of the total from their Putumayo Basin operations in Oriente, the eastern jungle region. In sharp contrast, output from the Santa Elena Peninsula Fields, where oil was first produced commercially in 1921, continued to decline, producing only 510,000 barrels, a decrease of almost 8% compared with that of 1980.

"Depressed metal prices coupled with increasing production costs have presented a great challenge for operators to control and reduce the costs of production to maintain profitability. Depleting ore reserves, added to the above has forced Outokumpu to take a hard look at its operations, to develop new methods to profitably extend the life of its mines. One of the areas investigated and approved for further development has been the use of larger and more energy efficient equipment. As a result, large flotation machines were developed and today 38 and 60m3 flotation machines are in use.Secondly, ore preconcentration has been developed to avoid processing the part of the ore that has little or no mineral values.Another quite recent development and the topic of this paper, has been the use of coarse flotation before conventional flotation. The main idea is that part of the valuable mineral is separated as early as practical by floating it with specially designed flotation equipment, installed in the grinding classification circuit. The new flotation cell is specially designed for this application and differs from the conventional cells in the tank design, feed arrangement and modified mechanisms in some cases."
