At Sams Creek a gold-bearing, peralkaline granite pophyry dike intrudes Ordovician-Silurian metapelite and quartzite. These metasedimentary rocks have undergone three phases of folding: a first phase of recumbent folds (F1), a second phase (F2) of northerly-trending inclined folds with a prominent crenulation cleavage, and a third phase (F3) of steeply plunging folds. The granite porphyry dike has a thickness of up to 40 m and intrudes thin lamprophyre dikes along its contacts. Deflection of the crenulation cleavage around the granite dike, shearing within the dike and its sinuous outcrop pattern indicate that the granite dike has been deformed during F2 and F3. The granite has been hydrothermally altered, with a first stage of magnetite-ankerite alteration. This first stage is cut by a second stage of quartz-pyrite veins and a third stage of sulphide, quartz and ankerite veins, accompanied by pervasive silicification represented by quartz-perthite-albite-rutile¦pyrite-ankerite-sericite assemblages. Lamprophyre is altered to an ankerite-chlorite-sericite assemblage. The sulphide veins are composed of arsenopyrite + pyrite ¦ gold ¦ galena ¦ sphalerite ¦ chalcopyrite ¦ pyrrhotite. The altered granite and the veins have been deformed and recrystallised. The competent sulphide minerals pyrite and arsenopyrite are fractured and brecciated, with fractures locally filled by galena, a ductile sulphide mineral. Vein quartz shows local cataclastic and mortar textures and develops pressure shadows around arsenopyrite. Alteration and mineralisation are confined to the granite porphyry and adjacent lamprophyre. These features together with the style of veining and the sulphide mineralogy indicate that the mineralisation was formed from a magmatichydrothermal fluid that was sourced from the granite. Oxygen, carbon and sulphur isotope values of the vein minerals (quartz, ankerite and sulphides) are also consistent with a magmatic source.

The imperative to operate sustainably requires all equipment and processes to operate at their maximum possible efficiency. Achieving this ideal state requires a thorough understanding, not only of the process itself, but also of the tools available to design and assess potential improvements. This paper presents a case where the widely employed Discrete Element Method (DEM) toolset proved insufficient to model problematic material flow during the process of optimising wet screening performance. A Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) model was found to more accurately replicate the flow characteristics of the physical system. Site observations identified biased loading of the screen decks to cause inefficiencies in the wet screening of an iron ore processing circuit. Two numerical modelling approaches were pursued with the aim to select the most suitable one and continue the optimisation process based on that selected model. Selection criteria were established, based on the minimum requirements of being able to replicate the problem, including the main flow dynamics deemed to cause the issue. The DEM model was found to over-simplify the slurry flow dynamics within the scrubber and no laterally biased flow was introduced by the scrubber’s rotation to the otherwise symmetric system. Since DEM was not able to accurately replicate the existing problem, it was deemed an unsuitable method to assess the effect of any changes to the system. The second approach consisted of a SPH model. This model was deemed to map the flow within the scrubber with sufficient accuracy to address the problem, as it produced biased screen loading comparable to that reported from site. Changes to the wet chute, delivering material from the scrubber to the screen, aimed to neutralise the non-centrality introduced via the scrubber, were then successfully designed and assessed using the SPH model.

The objective of the draw strategy in a caving mine is to maximise economic return by minimising waste dilution3 and maximising ore recovery4. The draw strategy must also include suitable controls for air blast and mud rush hazards and is highly constrained until continuous cave propagation has been achieved. This paper details a three-year project at the Ernest Henry Mine (EHM), which used cave flow simulation software to develop a draw strategy that increased the mine value by 32 per cent.Dilution and ore loss can be significant in sublevel cave (SLC) operations and result in poor recovery and considerable economic losses. To minimise dilution and ore loss, cellular automata software was used to simulate cave flow over the mine life. The optimisation project required mining footprints for various cut-off grades to be developed. Draw strategies for each mine footprint were then generated using a range of shut-off grades. Economic assessment of each scenario was then conducted to determine the mine footprint and corresponding draw strategy that generated the highest NPV (net present value). The iterative simulation process was improved by developing automated software functions in the flow modelling software to reduce time taken to generate and assess life-of-mine (LOM) draw strategy scenarios.In addition to improving the NPV of the mine, the optimisation project also enabled a decrease in the mine cut-off grade which increased the ore reserve and extended the mine life. Overall, an iterative process of mine planning, cave simulation, economic evaluation and geotechnical analysis was used to significantly increase the economic return of the SLC whilst ensuring caving risks were controlled to an acceptable level.CITATION:Campbell, A D and Power, G R, 2016. "As part of the Namew Lake project a mill was constructed to treat 1900 tpd of ore grading approximately 0.90% CU and 2.45% Ni to produce copper and nickel concentrates.Nickel occurs mainly as pentlandite and violarite while copper occurs as chalcopyrite. Two main ore types are present1 lower grade disseminated sulphides in a talcose ultramafic gangue and a higher grade solid sulfide with a granitic breccia matrix.Primary crushed ore from underground is treated on surface in a conventional closed circuit crushing plant using 2-stage cone crushing. Crushed ore is conveyed to storage and then fed at a controlled rate to a grinding circuit employing a rod and ball mill with hydrocyclone classification. Rougher flotation separates and cleans nickel and copper sulfides from waste materials followed by a high lime separation circuit to separate the minerals into final concentrates. Dewatering is achieved through use of high capacity thickeners and pressure filters prior to delivery to a loadout area. The crushing and milling control is highly automated.Plant design was based on metallurgical samples obtained from drill cores. After the first year of operations, plant results compared favourably with design projections.INTRODUCTIONThe Namew Lake Project is a joint venture partnership between Outokumpu Mines Ltd. (Canada) and Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Company Ltd. (60%). The project included construction of a mine and milling complex to treat approximately 500,000 tonnes per year of copper-nickel ore grading o.91% and 2.44% Ni. Known reserves are estimated at 2. 65 million tonnes. The deposit is located approximately 65 km south of Flin Flon (120 km by road) and about 5 km east of the Manitoba-Saskatchewan border. The decision to construct a concentrating facility was made June 15, 1987 and construction started a week later. The facility, designed for 1900 tonne per day throughput, was ready for commissioning in September 1988. Outokumpu Engineering of Finland was chosen to prepare metallurgical flowsheets, select and develop plant layouts, and provide construction management. Kilborn (Toronto) contributed detailed engineering for civil, structural, mechanical and electrical components and outokumpu Equipment of Canada, the design, the supply, and commissioning of the instrumentation package. Hudson Bay undertook the initial metallurgical test work and preliminary design work."

?Classification System Efficiency (CSE)? is a simple, powerful concept which can be used to measure and improve ball mill circuit efficiency. This paper describes six plant case studies which demonstrate the use of CSE to diagnose and/or improve grinding circuit performance, with related improvements in circuit efficiency ranging from 3 to 30 percent. The increased effective mill grinding energy is recaptured from energy that was going into over grinding, which can greatly benefit downstream mineral separation. The achievable CSE for given circuit design/operating variables is described, providing every plant metallurgist with the means to determine the potential for increasing their particular grinding circuit?s efficiency through increased CSE.

In 1994 the world's largest underwater tunnel was constructed to link Canada and the U.S.A. This new tunnel was large enough to accommodate double-decker railway cars. The construction of an unplanned Retrieval Shaft was required to allow removal and servicing of the Cutterhead of the Tunnel Boring Machine before it passed under the St. Clair River. This paper, which is a revision of that published in Canadian Tunnelling, has been modified here to emphasize construction considerations and describes the evolution of the design and construction of this "Rescue Shaft" under extreme schedule pressure, and changed ground conditions..

"The StackCell was developed to overcome the engineering and design challenges that are commonly associated with existing flotation technology such as pneumatic, self-aspirating cells, mechanical cells, and flotation columns. These challenges include high energy consumption, large floorspace requirements, and size. They are most evident when designing systems to process streams containing a high volumetric flow rate coupled with a significant float yield. Unlike many metalliferous and industrial mineral applications, fine coal flotation circuits are typically characterized by feed streams containing a low solids content (<5%, by weight) where up to 85% of the feed can report to the product launder. With input from major engineering houses and end-users, the Eriez Flotation Division (EFD) developed the StackCell technology with the goal of providing an additional flotation option for end-users. This technology was designed specifically to overcome these challenges by providing an efficient method of separation in terms of metallurgy, but also with respect to equipment size, energy consumption, and installed costs. Besides being placed in tandem with existing cells to provide cost-effective supplemental capacity, this technology can be installed in a stand-alone arrangement as recently demonstrated at Patriot Coal’s Kanawha Eagle preparation plant. This manuscript provides an understanding of the underlying fundamentals of this new technology and presents data from Kanawha Eagle in addition to other industrialscale installations.INTRODUCTIONOver the past decade, column flotation has continued to gain acceptance as an alternative method for recovering fine coal due to superior metallurgical performance as compared to mechanical flotation cells. This point has been proven on numerous occasions by comparison of plant flotation data with the release analysis separation curve (Dell et al., 1972). Data from a release analysis test approximates the ultimate flotation response of a coal sample. In North America, a number of investigations have been published that document bottom-line improvements achieved using column cells (Luttrell et al., 1999; Kohmuench et al., 2004; Baumgarth et al., 2005). According to these reports, the benefits are derived from an overall increase in plant yield that can be achieved due to the improved product grade in the flotation circuit. In particular, the application of wash water to a deep froth utilized in column flotation minimizes the nonselective recovery of high-ash ultrafines that are hydraulically entrained in the froth by conventional flotation machines."

High Pressure Sulfuric Acid/Oxygen Leaching of Platinum Group Metals Bearing Ni-Cu Mattes The processing of platinum bearing Ni-Cu ores for the extraction of platinum group metals (PGMs) involves comminution, flotation, smelting, and converter treatment of the furnace matte. Leaching circuits are predominantly used for further processing to separate the base metals and PGMs contained in the converter matte. Nickel dissolution is primarily achieved in the first stage leach (high pressure or atmospheric leaching, or a combination of the two), which is followed by second stage high pressure sulphuric acid/oxygen leaching to dissolve copper and the remaining nickel. PGMs are recovered from the leaching residue in downstream processes, and their dissolution in the first two leaching stages must hence be limited. Studies have been conducted to investigate the leaching mechanisms and kinetics of base metals in different leaching environments. The key operating parameters that influence the leaching kinetics of these metals include the temperature, acid concentration, degree of agitation, feed particle size distribution, and oxygen partial pressure. There is, however, a limited understanding of the behaviour of PGMs in the high pressure leaching process. Consequently, this process is controlled based on operators&apos; intuition despite its importance in the recovery of PGMs. An improved fundamental understanding of the behaviour of PGMs in this leaching environment is required to be able to accurately model the process. This in turn will allow the development of an improved control strategy and the estimation of optimum operating conditions. An overview of the leaching mechanisms of base metals and the effects of key operating parameters on their dissolution kinetics in different leaching environments are presented. Models that have been developed to predict the leaching behaviour of base metals are discussed and evaluated. Finally, initial results obtained with an experimental setup that will be used to investigate the behaviour of PGMs in high pressure leaching systems are discussed and compared with published results.

D. HARRINGTON: Owing to lack of funds, the United States Bureau of Mines have made no experiments in the Bruceton mines in the use of mudite. MR. McAULIFFE: I doubt that mudite cam be delivered at fifty cents a ton and that a mile of heading can be treated with mudite for ten dollars. You could not dig a ton of sand out of a sand hank for that money. L. C. CLARE: The tram road leading to Wattis mine crosses a shale bed and it is easy to screen the shale through a %-inch sieve and load it into a mine car. W. J. REID: A slow trip passing through a mudited entry will dislodge practically no dust, a rapid trip will make air disturbance enough to coat the cars with fine dust. MR. PRYDE: We have used mudite on stoppings around a fire in Reliance and for two months thought they were getting good results, but the fire was found to be drawing air and to be spreading. This mudite was smeared over the stoppings with a trowel. After this apparently failed we used dry adobe.

"When mining high grade, narrow ore bodies, the mining method often implies a very detailed knowledge of the ore contacts to avoid unacceptable ore loss and waste rock dilution. During the past decade, the use of microprocessor based drill monitoring equipment has become an accepted technique, even for percussive drilling. On the basis of the recorded drill performance, such as penetration rate, torque pressure, thrust etc., a fast evaluation of the lithological sequence of the ore zone can be made. In order to evaluate the potential of percussive drill monitoring to pro-vide detailed information of the geometry of the ore body, the technique was tested in the Viscaria copper mine in Sweden during 1996.To provide understandable information to the mine geologist, great emphasis was placed on the separation between the drilling response generated by variations in rock conditions from variations caused by the operator and the drill system. Due to the complicated geology in Viscaria, the drilling response presented to the geologists was separated in two independent signals, one representing the hardness of the rock and one representing the in homogeneity(fracturing) of the rock. With those signals a good separation between different rock types in the ore horizon was achieved.The experience from the Viscaria copper mine is that drill monitoring not only can be used to locate contacts between rock types, but also to characterize rock conditions and, often, also to specify the exact rock type present. Because it is possible to get the drill monitoring information very quickly it is a valuable complement to diamond drilling for increasing the specific knowledge of the geology and the ore body."

The metamorphic terrane of southwestern India is a geological environment containing ilmenite source-rocks, transport drainage systems, and resultant beach sand deposits that contain altered ilmenites greater than 60wt% TiO2. As such, this environment provides a geological laboratory, from source to deposit, for the investigation of ilmenite origin, alteration, and geochemical character. Ilmenite samples from potential source rocks, river sands, and beach sands all show degrees of alteration and a variety of alteration textures (iron leaching) producing leucoxene (here defined as >70 <90wt% TiO2) and progressing to rutile (here defined as >90wt% TiO2). Distinct alteration textures are specific to different source rocks and are used together with trace element geochemistry as provenance criteria. Ilmenites are classified on the basis of their trace element content. In India, the ilmenites are classified principally according to the Mg, Nb, and Mn content and this signature defines potential source rocks, even where the ilmenite is altered to a TiO2 content of 70wt%. The trace element data may fingerprint source rocks whose ilmenite is more prone to iron leaching and that criterion has application in exploration for higher-grade ilmenites.

It is important to study the ventilation system in order to better design and control of the working environment in deep underground mines. With increasing depth, heat, and humidity performance may be reduced and impair the attention of workers. The purpose of this paper is to apply a complex; development-end model configured in the MULTIFLUX program, developed at the University of Nevada, Reno, USA. The MULTIFLUX development-end model template has been benchmarked against measurement results from two UK coal mines in previous studies. The present study is a test of MULTIFLUX application in a metal mine. The model incorporates the simulation of the air flow field in the drift and the auxiliary air duct; simultaneous heat and humidity transport from the drift wall; heat and mass exchange between the air in the drift and the ducts; and the evaporation of process water and/or condensation of vapor as governed by the psychometric conditions. The results are compared with field data, measured at the Lucky Friday Mine (LF) in Idaho, USA, an underground mine and also shown between the results from the MULTIFLUX-based model, and those from another program, Kduct, developed at the Kyushu University in Japan.. This paper presents the design and construction of a multi-channel geophone array that improves tomographic imaging capabilities in both surface and underground mines. Especially important in the design of the array is sensor placement. Three issues related to sensor placement are addressed in this paper: 1) sensor placement in long, horizontal boreholes, 2) development of simple, robust, MSHA-acceptable clamping unit, and 3) orientation of the geophones within the borehole. Improved imaging capabilities will produce energy, environmental, and economic benefits by increasing exploration accuracy and reducing operating costs.

This work presents the findings from a number of NIOSH studies evaluating the impacts of emerging technologies that may reduce dust exposures for continuous mining and roof bolting personnel. These technologies include use of a wet head cutting drum on a continuous mining machine that places water sprays on the cutting drum instead of placing them on a manifold outby the drum. Evaluations at two separate operations showed that the use of the wet head sprays reduced dust levels at the miner operator in the return air, although these reductions were quite variable. NIOSH also assessed the effectiveness of a canopy air curtain for protecting roof bolting personnel. The data showed that dust levels were lower beneath the air curtain than outside the air curtain. This study also suggested several future modifications to the air curtain to in-crease its effectiveness. Finally, NIOSH evaluated mist drilling technology for its effectiveness in controlling respirable dust exposures of bolting personnel. A recent study showed that higher dust levels existed around a machine using the mist system compared to a machine using a conventional vacuum system for dust control. Unfortunately, the true impact of mist drilling was confounded by this machine operating downwind of the continuous miner for much of the study.

Ball mills are commonly used for regrinding operations in the mineral processing industry. But, in recent times, efforts are being made at the introduction of stirred mills particularly for those instances where very fine grinding is required. Media type (steel shot, glass beads, alumina balls and crushed quartz), media size, mill speed and the number of passes required to obtained the target product size are studied. The product size and energy consumption are used in the evaluation of the test results. The grinding media size, shape, density, filling ratio, mill circumferential speed and grinding time play a distinct role in product size fineness.

The Southern African region contains abundant gold tailing heaps that are an environmental concern due to dust pollution and chemical contamination of nearby water bodies. Nevertheless, these heaps contain gold with potential to be extracted for financial gain. In this study, the feasibility of extraction of gold from a Witwatersrand gold tailings using glycine was investigated using a two-level full factorial design. Effects of variables such as glycine concentration at levels of 0.5–1.5 M with a solid–liquid ratio of 50–200 g/L were investigated. Although the solid–liquid ratio used in this study was below the industrial norm, it provides a starting point for investigating the applicability of this technology. To enhance the gold extraction, potassium permanganate pretreatment and copper ion addition were adopted. The results revealed that 91.4% gold extraction was achieved after 24 h pre-treatment of the tailings using 2 g/L potassium permanganate followed by subsequent leaching using 1.5 M glycine at pH 12, with 50 g/L solid–liquid ratio and 2 g/L copper ions. Statistically, the solid–liquid ratio and potassium permanganate pre-treatment of the tailings were found to be significant at 95% confidence interval, whilst interactions of copper ions and glycine concentration were significant factors. The work demonstrates that potassium permanganate pre-treatment prior to glycine leaching of low-grade secondary gold resources, such as tailings, can be beneficial. Furthermore, the methodology developed in this work provides an opportunity for further investigation of the recovery of gold hosted in complex mineralogical matrices.

Jining No. 3 Coal Mine, a subsidiary of Yanzhou Coal Company Limited. China, is a super-large modern mine. The coal mine is not only the first one constructed with five-million tons of designed production capacity in China, but also a modern underground coal mine with coal transportation systems by trains and ships, and with a power plant. Based on the hard roof conditions of the sublevel caving coal face in the fault-affected zone, the authors designed rebar and cable bolts for supporting the tailgate that is separated from the gob by a narrow pillar. With extensometers and borescope, strata behavior was systematically studied during tailgate development: (1). Roof convergence is much smaller as well as roof strata separation between inside and outside the anchored zone. (2). The affected zone during tailgate development is approximately 50 m. (3). Because of serious floor heave and obvious rib convergence, the tailgate finally turned into a reversed-trapezoid from the original rectangular shape. (4). There being many joints and fractures in the pillar, coal is crushed from the elastic bedded structure into loose blocky materials. But the tailgate met the service requirements during longwall retreat mining, and demonstrated that the method of roof support was a success. Since then, roof bolting has been widely used for the tailgate of longwall panels at Jining No. 3 Coal Mine.
