Rock mass characterisation is a critical component of effective stope design. Unexpected excessive stope dilution or uneconomic stope sizes can be the result of rock mass characterisation that is not representative of actual stope conditions. Comprehensive characterisation of the rock forming the stope hanging wall, back, ends and footwall is best done by a rock mechanics or ground control expert, however, this is time consuming and is often limited by available access. There are two general approaches for characterising a stope hanging wall for dilution estimating. Detailed classification and mapping data can be collected in local areas where good exposure is available. Personnel, exposure and time are usually not available to do a thorough analysis for all stopes. The stope hanging walls are then broken into lenses or domains and similar conditions are assumed for each area. The second approach consists of using readily available data such as RQD. Other rock mass properties which influence hanging wall behaviour are estimated based on back analysing a few case histories. Stope design is then based on the variability of the one parameter, such as RQD, that is consistently measured for the rock mass surrounding the ore body. This paper presents a third approach which looks, in depth, at the interpretation of geological core logging data for rock mass characterisation. Several rock mass properties that influence stope design, such as joint alteration, rock mass strength, joint spacing and orientations, have been linked to data collected by the mine geologists. This drill hole logging data was calibrated against underground mapping and used to back analyse the dilution prediction for mined-out stopes.

For the use of those who prefer manila rope to wire rope for light hoisting and hauling, the Ingersoll-Rand Co. has brought out a new model Little Tugger Hoist which is designated No. 11. The square piston, reversible driving engine, automatic lubrication, inclosed gearing, rum release clutch and worm-operated band brake are essentially the same as in the No. 1 model which was introduced about two Years ago. The main differences are in the diameter and length of the drum, the width of the flanges and, necessarily, the main frame and overall dimensions. The new No. 11 Little Tugger has a hoisting drum 7 in. in diameter by 17 in. long with 5-in. flanges. This accommodates 300 ft. of 7/8 -in. manila, rope. The maximum capacity of this hoist is conservatively rated at 600 1b. The weight of the hoist itself is 358 lb. It is 21 ½ in. long, 31 ¼ in. wide and 23 in. high.

Optimum Colliery is an opencast strip mine producing 18Mt of bituminous coal per annum for the export and inland markets as well as for domestic power generation at the Hendrina PowerStation. Coal is exposed by four 60m3 and four 11m3 walkingdraglines and transported from the open cuts to the processing plants by twelve 130 ton coal haulers. Overburden and interburden areas are drilled by nine 250mm-diameter rotary drill rigs. Until 1997 all surveying tasks were conducted by electronictotal stations requiring accurate control points from which line-of-sight XYZ readings could be taken. In 1997 a GPS system was introduced which consisted of a fixed base station and two rovers. The rovers were able to perform most of the survey tasks assigned to total stations. In addition, two overburden drills were equipped with blasthole drill navigation systems, which includes the drill monitoring and material (strata) recognitions system. The rest of the drilling fleet will also be equipped with GPS systems. Blasthole positions are designed in the office based on survey and geological/geophysical information and transmitted via radio link to an industrial PC on the drills. Together with GPS positional data, both the planned and actual drill positions are displayed on an LCD screen. This eliminates the need for surveyed hole positions to be staked before drilling, and for actual hole positions to be surveyed after drilling. As holes are drilled, performance and rock property data transmitted back to the office. Future applications will include GPS monitoring of dragline positions and pad elevations. GPS receivers on the draglines will utilize the existing base station to calculate and transmit XYZ co-ordinates. Another application will be locating of boreholes in the field prior to the pumping of specified explosive charges into the blastholes. Charging instructions for each blasthole will be loaded into the computer on the explosives truck which will be equipped with a GPS system for hole identification.

A system to continuously measure the concentration of radon in mine ventilating air has been developed and tested in a uranium mine. In use, the air/radon mixture to be monitored is pumped through filters into a scintillation cell where nuclear decay of the radon produces flashes of light. These are electronically counted, giving a quantitative measure of the radon present. Air is continuously drawn from the mine atmosphere into the radon sensor box. This air sample passes through two filters into the detector cell as shown in the schematic diagram. A portion of the radon in the detector cell will experience nuclear decay, producing polomium 218 and an alpha particle. The alpha particles from the fraction that decays strike a zinc-sulfide coating on the inside wall of the cell and produce flashes of light. These enter a photo-multiplier tube which records each flash as an electrical pulse. An amplifier increases the voltage of each pulse, allowing electronic screening to remove noise and other undesirable pulses. The remaining pulses are counted by a conventional data acquisition system.

In 1975 bituminous coal and lignite production in the United States reached an all-time high of 637 million tons, an increase of 6 percent over production in 1974. The output, valued at $11.9 billion f.o.b. mines, was produced at 5,100 mines in 24 states (6). Coal mining is the largest mining industry in Alabama. Production from Alabama's mines in 1975 was over 21 million tons, and present projections forecast a steady increase in production, with tonnages almost doubling by 1985 (5). Of the total quantity of coal produced, about 16 million tons were consumed in electric power generation and the remainder was used for metallurgical coke production, extraction of chemicals and petroleum based products, and power for industry. The fact that 75 percent of Alabama's power is generated by burning coal attests to the importance of this fossil fuel to the State. Approximately 14 million tons of coal were produced by strip-mining methods in Alabama during 1975 and about 7 million tons were produced by underground mining during the same period. Surface mining is expected to continue at about 14 million tons per year, but by 1980 underground coal mining is expected to increase to about 25 million tons (3). About 7 million tons of surface-mined coal in Alabama is subjected to some means of washing or cleaning. The methods used are screening accompanied by heavy media separation, jigging, tabling and flotation. Some of the simpler approaches employ screening and jigging, or tabling. Except where flotation is used, the screen undersize fraction (finer than 0.25 inch) is rejected, with the result that 10 to 15 percent of the coal is lost. Thus, in the State of Alabama an aggregate of about 1 million tons of coal is wasted annually in the fines which are impounded from treatment of surface-mined coal. The Beirut Hilton Hotel, which was built in 1975, but never occupied, was imploded on Sunday, July 14, 2002 by Controlled Demolition, Inc. (CDI) of Phoenix, Maryland and their client, Optimal Engineering Consulting & Contracting, SARL, (OECC) of Antelias, Lebanon to make room for a new hotel. Twenty-seven years ago, just days before the grand opening, the Hilton Hotel became the site of fighting in Lebanon’s Civil War. Christian and Muslim militiamen fought room to room for control of the building and other nearby hotels. The Hilton, two other major hotels and other high-rise buildings were ravaged by the fighting. The building was one of the three major hotels badly damaged, but not rebuilt, in Lebanon. Located in the City Center, the Hilton stood out in a major redevelopment area which, in recent years, had erased the scars of the 15 year long Civil Wa r.

Como parte del proyecto de estudio de impacto ambiental presentado por la Compañía Minera Antamina (Ancash), el presente trabajo describe la reutilización de las aguas residuales de los procesos mineros realizado en Huarmey. El estudio plantea el transporte el concentrado de mineral desde la mina hasta el puerto de embarque en Huarmey a través de camiones utilizando una carretera que facilitaría el desplazamiento de los mismos. Una vez llegado el concentrado al puerto de embarque, se separaría el agua del concentrado y el agua sería tratada para luego descargarla en el mar. Sin embargo, por análisis posteriores, se optó por otra propuesta más ecológica, donde se traslade los concentrados de cobre y zinc en suspensión acuosa a través de un minero ducto, y el agua tratada remanente del transporte de mineral, sería disipada mediante una plantación forestal, evitando la descarga al mar, generando empleo y una extensa área verde en el desierto de Huarmey. De forma que se innova en la minería a través de la reutilización de las aguas y se desafia las condiciones extremas del desierto costero para desarrollar una superficie vegetal que consumiera esta agua.

Over the last few years, interest in the development and construction of large diameter, high pressure pipelines from the Mackenzie Delta in northern Canada and Alaska's North Slope has steadily increased as a result of the projected decline in recoverable natural gas from existing reserves in western Canada. The success of such enormous pipeline projects, which will require utilization of a strain-based design approach, is largely based on successful application of high strength line pipe steels, such as X80 and X100. To fully realize the economic benefits of high strength steels, welding processes and procedures must be developed to ensure that the requirements for high strength and good low temperature toughness are confidently obtainable in field girth welds used in the construction of such pipelines. This study aims to provide a better understanding of the factors that control weld metal strength and toughness for a series of mechanized X100 girth welds produced using a range of narrow-gap gas-metal arc welding procedures. The attainment of high yield strength (> 810 MPa) is considered to be an important target to ensure overmatching strength relative to the longitudinal property distribution of X100 line pipe steel. Some factors that have been considered in this evaluation include influences of gas-metal arc welding process variants (single and multi-wire) and changes in welding procedure specifications, including joint preparation. Key components of this work relate to the reliable measurement of weld metal strength variation through-thickness and as a function of position around the circumference of a given girth weld.

Reflected light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and electron microprobe analysis have been used to determine the mineralogy, phase percentages, grain sizes, textures, and partitioning of cobalt and nickel in two cobalt-nickel rich mattes. These mattes were prepared by submerged bath smelting from a flotation cobalt-nickel concentrate containing 4.8% cobalt and 5.1% nickel. The concentrate was derived from lead-zinc-copper ores of the Viburnum Trend, southeast Missouri. Eleven discrete phases have been distinguished in the matte samples, three of which contain significant cobalt and nickel. The phases are cobaltpentlandite ((Co,Ni,Fe)9S8), cobalt-bearing marmatite ((Co,Fe,Zn)S), shandite (Ni3Pb2S2), bornite (Cu5FeS4), galena (PbS), magnetite (Fe3O4), pyrrhotite ((Co,Ni,Cu,Fe)1_xS), chalcocite (Cu2S), CuPbS phase, metallic copper, and metallic silver. Cobaltpentlandite and cobalt-bearing marmatite- occur in coarse grains (50 µm) that would separate readily during grinding, but shandite contains small (5 - 10um), abundant inclusions of pyrrhotite and bornite.. The feasibility of producing low carbon (LC) ferromanganese (FeMn) by lime-'ore' melt refining of high-grade ferromanganese silicon (FeMnSi) was investigated. Thermodynamic simulations demonstrated significant benefits in moving from a single-stage ladle operation to a two-stage counter-current reladling operation (to emulate the commercial Penin Process). The theoretical alloy silicon content was predicted to be refined from 1.57 to 0.005 per cent silicon, at a 6.2 per cent higher manganese yield (yield predicted to increase from 82.3 to 88.5 per cent). Extension of this counter-current refining principle, to a multistage Counter-Current Reaction Launder (CCRL) was investigated using the Slag Metal And Gas Klnetics (SMAK) software to model the mass transfer kinetics of the multicomponent coupled reaction system. Simulation results suggested that commercial production of 50 000 tonnes per annum (tpa) of refined LC FeMn, containing less than 0.5 per cent silicon, at manganese yields of up to 90 per cent, should be feasible in a compact CCRL (7 m long by 0.7 m wide).

Economics, Resources, Environment and Technology are the major driving forces in the base metals industry. However, these factors are intertwined and together will propel the industry in the future. The demand for metals has grown with economic expansion, between 2 to 4 % p.a. The current growth cycle has been driven by economic expansion in China where the demand for base metals has risen from - 7 % of the world demand in the 90's to - 25 % of world demand today, and rising. Base metals are commodities and their demand and price are cyclical. Historically metal prices have declined in constant dollars, forcing the industry to reduce costs, increase productivity and increase the scale of operation for economies of scale. Due to resource depletion and capacity expansion the industry is driven to expand its reserve and resource base. However, in the case of sulphide deposits of copper and nickel it appears to be a losing battle. For nickel the laterites represent a vast source at this time. Their development requires development of new technologies to make these resources economic. Emission reduction is being increasingly mandated in most jurisdictions with all governments enacting progressively more stringent regulations. The industry has been responding with technological innovation. With the Kyoto protocol there is a push to reduce energy intensity in metal production. Technological innovation is driven by all the other factors and is leading to novel ways of doing exploration, mining and processing, that would maximize resource delineation and utilization, reduce costs, increase productivity, reduce energy consumption, maximize asset utilization and reduce environmental affects. Development of alternative technologies such as Pressure Acid Leach of laterite for nickel, bio-leaching, heap leaching, SX-EW etc are being adopted to achieve the aims of the industry.

This volume is the second of a four-volume final report on research carried out under a contract from the U.S. Bureau of Mines on the development of a computer simulation model for surface mine reclamation planning. The other volumes are titled as follows: Volume I: Ore Reserve Estimation, Volume III: Mine Coordinate Generator System, and Volume IV: User's Manual for OPMHS/2. The dragline model described in this report simulates the movement of the dragline bucket across the digging face, the swing load, the dump, and swing back. It is programmed to handle chopdown, key cut, main cut, and rehandling operations. Provisions have been made for simulating equipment and mining delays. Any mining method can be specified in terms of numbered blocks, the dragline positions for the mining block and the dumping location for the block. Accounting procedures permit the calculation of production rates, rehandle volume, dig and delay times. The model can be used to study the effects of varying mining conditions, cut width, and spoiling sequence with special reference to toxic spoil, overburden and bench removal procedures. The basic input data for the model include machine parameters, the geology and material characteristics, the mining parameter, and the delay characteristics of the equipment.

I?ve been asked to appraise the global role of coal and mining, and the best place I can think of to begin is with the World watch Institute, which purports to monitor all things global. Last fall the institute?s magazine, entitled World Watch, in a cover story called for a worldwide campaign to outlaw the use of coal before this century?s end. To my mind the article began the campaign. However, the institute had to admit that no such ban will be possible unless there is special help and heavy intervention?that is, novel policies and punitive taxes. I?ll quote directly from the magazine to underscore the point: ?without them the market will continue to deceive us into thinking coal is cheap, abundant and irreplaceable?.

To alleviate the hazard to personnel and danger to equipment caused by fires on large, mobile vehicles. The Approach: A system which automatically senses a fire at its early stage of development, warns the driver of the danger, and activates fire extinguishers in the zone of combustion, How It Works: The automatic fire protection system utilizes both thermal and optical sensors to detect the heat or light given off by a fire in the area of concern (Fig. 1). The system warns the driver of the hazard and then automatically extinguishes the fire with pressurized S-C class powder. The system can also be activated manually from the operator's cab or from ground level. Further, the automatic sequencing of the system can be manually overridden by the driver if he determines that the fire sensors have malfunctioned to cause a false alarm.

The increasing interest in the subject of electrical separation warrants the addition to what has already been written of a few lines covering the practical workings of the Tilly Foster mill under the direction of Mr. E. S. Moffat, General Manager. Since my last paper was presented to the Institute, Mr. S. P. Tomkins, the superintendent, has had thrust upon him for solution several problems complicated by the introduction of new conditions. 1. The richer portion of the lean ore dump, and that nearest the railroad track, having been worked up in 1890, the handling of the balance, including a largely increased amount of rock, could only be accomplished at an increased cost. 2. The tailings had accumulated close about the mill to such an extent that arrangements had to be perfected to move them further away.

Orano Canada Inc. (Orano) operates the McClean Lake mill in northern Saskatchewan, processing high concentration uranium ore, delivered in slurry form, from the Cameco operated Cigar Lake mine. This slurry is ultimately processed into the purified uranium oxide product known as calcined yellowcake. During the calcining process, sulphate (SO42-) entrained in the yellowcake undergoes thermal decomposition into sulphur dioxide (SO2). SO2 is a colourless gas that poses health and safety risks. Since 2016, an anhydrous ammonia dosing system was successfully added to the existing Venturi particulate scrubber system to provide efficient removal of SO2 from the calciner off-gas. Within the pH controlled scrubber solution, SO2 exists in a pH dependent equilibrium with sulphite/bisulphite (SO32-/ HSO3-). The presence of a significant fraction of reduced sulphite and bisulphite in mill solutions presents a hazard in downstream circuits. Should these solutions drop in pH, either through natural oxidation or inadvertent mixing with low pH solutions, the solution equilibrium will shift from SO32-/HSO3- in favour of SO2, resulting in the evolution of SO2 gas from any liquid surfaces. In 2018, Hatch Ltd. (Hatch) and Orano implemented a design change in the calciner scrubber system. Blowdown from this system is now treated in an oxidation pre-step utilizing hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and anhydrous ammonia (NH3) for pH control, in order to convert the residual sulphite/bisulphite present in solution to stable ammonium sulphate product. This paper will detail some of the challenges and actions undertaken to minimize SO2 risk, culminating in the recent introduction of a novel system designed to oxidize sulphite/bisulphite and prevent mobilization from the calciner scrubber solution into other mill areas where there is the potential for acidification and SO2 release.

Land disturbed by alluvial gold mining should be restored to a capability or productivity as good as that which existed prior to disturbance.   Effective rehabilitation requires detailed planning prior to mining and must also be closely integrated with the mining operations.   The main constituents of a rehabilitation plan: description of existing site conditions, choice of final land use, establishment of final landform, water management and erosion control, soil reconstruction, revegetation and management of rehabilitated land are briefly described.
