The selected mining method for the Rodeo lower Zone is slot and slash. Initial design indicated that the stope height should be limited to a maximum of 18 m, thus six levels were needed to extract the ore. Higher stope height in the Rodeo Lower Zone means less development thus less capital required to extract the available reserves. It was proposed to eliminate one level by establishing 30 m and 24 m level intervals. To ensure that no stability problems will be encountered by eliminating one level, a Matthew analysis, based on diamond drill core information, was performed for the Lower Rodeo Ore Body. In addition, comparisons between the rock mass quality of Meikle Main Zone below 1825 L and Meikle East Zone between 1600 L and 1750 L with the rock mass quality of the Lower Rodeo were made

Blasting induced rock fragmentation is an art that has been developed and refined for hundred’s of years through blasting and recording the results. Good blasting fragmentation practices were thus developed through experience. However, this method requires a history that is typically developed in a mine over a number of years and sometimes at considerable expense. Quantification of fragmentation as a function of rock-mass characteristics and blast design is attractive. Developments towards this end have included semi-empirical methods as well as computer codes that explicitly treat shock wave transmission and the subsequent rock breakage. This paper will present predictions of fragmentation resulting from rock blasting using the computer code AUTODYN and a new state-of-the-art material model for brittle rock and concrete.

At present, discounted cash flow analysis is generally accepted as the preferred method of valuation of mine projects in surface coal mining. One of the major reasons for that is its ability to take into account the time effect of money over the life-of-mine. As a looking-forward method, it requires forecasts be made with regard to economic, technological, technical, geological, and environmental conditions that will prevail in the future. All forecasts are inherently uncertain as they are a function of the uncertainty of all variables of the discounted cash flows analysis. This indicates that the only alternative for modeling the uncertainty in the project evaluation is the development of adequate risk models to serve the decision-making process. The paper offers a model of project cash flows at risk in strip coal mining, which is an integrated corporate risk management solution. The model is based on a stochastic approach that provides the answer to the question about how large is the deviation between stochastic cash flows and the planned value (or that used in the budget) at each time step of the discounted cash flows analysis, that is due to the uncertainty in the model variables. A solution is worked out for the allowable range of the stochastic cash flows variation that determines the probability of achieving the planned value of a mine project. The Monte Carlo simulation technique is used to model the stochastic behavior of the project variables. A case study of an opencast coal mine project is provided to illustrate the applicability of the risk model. The results obtained provide a new understanding of the mine project risk as a component of the project discount rate.

"This case study produced for the metal mine operating in Kazakhstan, which has ventilation controlled manually and working continuously at maximum speed to keep air flowing through each part of the mine 24 hours a day. The mine auxiliary ventilation has been designed with the maximum length of ducting systems with extra air volumes to compensate for potential leakage. The mine provided auxiliary ventilation to all production stopes even to those, which for various operating reasons become temporarily inactive. However, mine safety has to consider risks associated with the deficit of fresh air for mine gases dilution and removal. The mine needs additional investments for re-designing ventilation network and therefore needs to estimate financial risks associated with it. The aim of this study is to conduct risk analysis for ventilation network optimisation processes at the operational metal mine in Kazakhstan. Mine ventilation surveys were undertaken for validation of the computerised ventilation model. The mine ventilation network modelling has been undertaken to be compliant with Kazakhstan mining regulations. Results of the mine ventilation optimisation processes were analysed in terms of financial risks for investments into reconstruction of the ventilation shafts, extension of the ventilation network, variable speed fans and automated regulators. Savings were resulted from improving ventilation system efficiency by reduce airflow in areas without mining activity and redistributing existing ventilation capacity. Based on savings derived from the optimised ventilation network an additional NPV has been received. Stochastic modelling use Monte Carlo simulation producing representation of possible outcomes for the additional NPV considering electricity pricing as a major variability. As result probability distribution for the optimised ventilation network demonstrates the additional NPV in a range of 1.6 - 2.2 million US$ in the corresponding defined value of 90%. Moreover, there is only 5% chance that the additional NPV to be less than 1.5 million US$. Conducted risk analysis for ventilation network optimisation processes gives considerations on volume of investments into the mine ventilation system.INTRODUCTIONCosts for mine ventilation are typically increasing when mines expand to deep levels. "The current research study addresses a physical separation process of basic oxygen furnace slag “BOF-Slag” (also called Linz-Donawitz “LD” slag) for the removal of phosphorous. In order to recycle the LD-Slag into the steelmaking process, the physical dephosphorization methods are considered. The systematic geometallurgical investigation carried out on particle classes of decreasing size, which were further subdivided into susceptibility classes, shows intimate intergrowth beyond 40 µm due to slag´s fast cooling rate. Generally, LD-slag is constituted of oxide and silicate phases, among which di-calcium silicate “C2S” dominates. About 0.5 mass% of phosphorous was detected in the LD- slag, which is exclusively situated in the lattice of the C2S. The comparatively high grinding resistance (Rittinger index 12.9 cm²/J) of the LD-slag reflects the energy demand to liberate the phosphorous carrying phase from the iron containing minerals, while separation efficiency decreases in the very fine particle size range. Hence, the conversion of the phase intergrowth pattern was considered alternatively to re-build the mineral phase structure of the material to a separable interlock pattern. Carbon dioxide, as the most convenient substance in the steelmaking plants, was applied to digest the C2S in the presence of water and to reduce the basicity of the slag slurry. As a result of C2S-CO2 chemical reaction, calcite and calcium silicate are precipitated at the surface of the oxide particles and carried between 25% and 75% of the total phosphorous, respectively. Accordingly, the mobility of the phosphorous content phase to the top of the grains serves the possibility to separate the precipitated layer by mechanical attrition process. This paper is focused on the impact of the intergrowth pattern alteration on the slag´s separability characteristics. Moreover, the operating conditions of the carbonization process, such as temperature and pressure, on the deconstruction kinetics of the C2S and the generated products will be considered. INTRODUCTION The steelmaking BOF-Slag is a stony aggregate waste from the steel manufacturing process. The investigated slag by the current research work was provided by voestalpine steelmaking plant in Linz, Austria. The current legislative situation in Austria restricts the historical application of slag as construction material, due to the high level of heavy metals content and corresponded land-filling and transportation costs of slag, therefore the demand for recycling of BOF-Slag to the steelmaking process has raised, as an alternative application. Statistically, voestalpine steelmaking plant produces about 130 kg BOF-Slag per ton of final steel product, which serves annual BOF-Slag production of 700,000 ton, approximately."

The method of using large-diameter augers to recover coal was introduced to the mining industry about the end of World War II, and production of bituminous coal with augers has increased steadily to an estimated 7 million tons, or approximately 1.4 percent of the total mined in 1956. Although auger mining has proved to be a reliable and economical method of mining coal, a number of unfortunate fatal accidents have been experienced; consequently the need for these recommended safety standards is indicated for this comparatively new method of coal mining. As mining methods and equipment change from time to time and new hazards are introduced, these standards will be revised; therefore, questions or suggestions from the coal-mining industry will be welcomed and carefully considered.

The validity of a steady state assumption made by Adams and Nicol (1986) in the modelling of the elution of gold from activated carbon was investigated. It is shown that the accuracy of the steady state approximation is dependent, not only on the magnitudes of the solution flow rate and reactor volume, but also on the lumped elution rate constant. Under the experimental conditions used by Adams and Nicol (1986) the steady state assumption was inaccurate. This could be circumvented in this instance by applying a rigorous general model which accounts for unsteady state behaviour in the solution and in the activated carbon to the experimental data.

On scheduled commissioning and effective operation of a solvent extraction circuit relies on getting the design of both the core contact equipment and the peripheral plant right. Experience has shown that poor performance of new plants is frequently a result of ?utility? systems that do not match the requirements of the circuit, rather than the mass transfer equipment itself. Both the operator/owner and designer need to understand the ?complete requirements? for the circuit to get the balance of the design right. This paper reviews generic issues, frequently overlooked or altered during cost-cutting exercises, which have a significant impact on plant performance.

The rheological properties of mineral suspensions affect the design and operation of transport, mixing, size classification, grinding, gravity concentration, flotation and de-watering systems. In many cases, the rheological properties can be modified to improve processing through the addition of chemical additives. These additives may be either organic or inorganic and generally affect the state of particle aggregation or dispersion. Inorganic modifiers act primarily by affecting the surface charge of mineral particles and thus control the magnitude of electrostatic attraction/repulsion between particles. The action of organic additives (polymers and surfactants) is a combination of electrostatic and steric forces – the latter being related to the molecular weight of these reagents. While low molecular weight polymers are dispersants (viscosity reducers), high molecular weight polymers are likely to induce flocculation and increase yield stress.

The Doyon Mine?s Zone 1 (Altered Zone), found along the southern boundary of the mine, encompasses approximately 20% of the mining reserves. The mineralisation is found in a series of steeply dipping narrow veinlets, which are contained in an extremely weak host rock: a sericitic schist with RQD values ranging from 0 to 20. Longhole mining methods are used, with either longitudinal or transverse approaches, depending on the width of the ore zone. Dilution is of critical importance in the mining of this zone, particularly in longitudinal stopes, where dilution levels have averaged 55% since 2000. Major factors influencing dilution in this zone include the stope geometry and standup time. A two-phase approach has been developed to mine and backfill longitudinal stopes: the top of the stope is pastefilled after approximately half of the broken ore has been extracted; the remainder of the ore is extracted once the plug has cured; and the remaining void is filled. This method has been used in six stopes to date, resulting in an average dilution of 17%. This paper details the application of this technique and its effect on dilution.

Author?s note: Diversity in practice exists in the application of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) for purchase price allocations with respect to the recognition of Value Beyond Proven and Probable Reserves or VBPP, as defined by the Emerging Issues Task Force (EITF) in EITF 04-3: ?Mining Assets: Impairment and Business Combinations?. This diversity appears to arise from differing interpretations of what constitutes sufficient information to value components of VBPP in business combinations. Concerned with this diversity in practice, respected members of the mining community formed a working group which prepared an issues paper that discussed this diversity and provided recommendations for recognition and valuation of VBPP in business combinations. The working group then submitted this paper to the EITF, requesting further guidance be issued on the concept of VBPP. In conjunction with the submission to the EITF, the working group also provided this paper to the United States Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) for review and comment. The EITF discussed this issue at its May, 2008 agenda committee meeting. However, it declined to add this topic to the EITF agenda for further consideration. Absent additional guidance on VBPP from the EITF, the working group submitted a proposed definition of VBPP to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission for its consideration. The following article, which is consistent with the issues paper that was submitted to the EITF and the SEC, discusses the components of and valuation techniques for VBPP. The correspondence with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, which includes the proposed definition of VBPP by the working group, is attached as Appendix 1 to this article.

Diethylenetriamine (DETA) is known to be an effective pyrrhotite depressant in pentlandite flotation. It has been reported recently that its performance becomes more consistent when the reagent is used in conjunction with sulfur dioxide (SO2). In the present investigation, the effects of DETA and SO32- ions on the changes in the hydrophobicity of pyrrhotite electrode have been studied at pH 6.8. The results show that both DETA and SO32- can reduce the water contact angles of pyrrhotite; however, the contact angles can be reduced to zero only in the presence of the SO32- ions. This finding may be attributed to the ability of the SO32- ions to reduce the polysulfides formed on pyrrhotite by superficial oxidation, which may in turn provides an explanation for the robust performance of DETA/SO2 combination.

Proven and probable coal reserves in Iran are estimated to be in excess of 5 Billion tons while the annual coal production is a mere 2 Million tons. Underdevelopment of the industry has proved higher production levels to be impossible, despite growing demand for energy supplies. The existences of numerous legislation are thought to have a detrimental effect on coal mining activities to the extent that some business entities have become uneconomical in many areas. This paper provides an analysis of the prevailing mining laws, policy making, legal frameworks and obstacles. It also outlines some other obstacles enshrined in the law and also highlights areas where foreign direct investment should be encouraged. The costs of lost opportunities are then estimated. The paper concludes by demonstrating that deregulations, amendments and in some cases complete abolishment of the incumbent legislations governing the coal mining industry will greatly enhance development of the industry. The analysis provided in this paper together with the results obtained, can prove useful to macro-economic policy makers both at local and national levels.

Properties of an explosive which itiuence its performance on rock breakage are analyzed in relation to the rock: hardness and a discussion on the interaction of an explosive with the rock during the blasting process is given. Theoretical concepts regarding ideal and non-ideal detonation are reviewed to explain how the physical and chemical factors of an explosive influence the rate of energy release and its consequence on blasting performance. While a lower velocity of detonation indicates a slowed chemical reaction it does not necessarily mean a loss in energy from the explosive. High density ammonium nitrate (HDAN) can be used effectively in the formulation of modern industrial explosives to slow the energy release rate with its attendant decrease in detonation velocity. Examples of blasting performance using custom formulated explosives with HDAN are presented.

Application of Gy?s formula is appropriate for calculation of the Fundamental Error (FE) prior to samples being collected at any stage of the minerals process, provided that sampling parameters K and a (alpha) have been determined by calibration of the ores. Two types of calibration procedure are well established in the industry, the Hetrogeneity test and the 32-piece sampling tree experiment. The sampling tree experiment uses the variance and average grade of metal analyses from four series of samples at different nominal fragment size, as the basic input data. Pierre Gy suggested the cube as an appropriate exponent of the nominal fragment size for use in his equation. More recent work suggests that this exponent is variable and characteristic of specific ores and therefore requires calibration. The method described here explains the experimental procedure of the calibration. It is then possible to calculate a sampling nomogram using the sampling parameters K and a. This allows the sampler to determine a suitable protocol for the sampling event that will ensure that the FE does not exceed a predetermined precision at any point in the sampling procedure.

The thermodynamic model for species distribution in aluminium chloride (AlCl3) and 1-butyl-3- methylimidazolium chloride (BMIC) system was developed. The experimental thermodynamic data, considering a range of aluminium chloride species, such as AlCl4-, Al2Cl7-, Al3Cl10-, Al4Cl13-, and Al2Cl6 were used in developing the model. When the XAlCl3 was in the range of 0 to 0.50, only anion species Cl- and AlCl4- were existing in the solution. As the XAlCl3 value increased more than 0.50, the available anions were Al2Cl7-, Al3Cl10-, Al4Cl13-, and Al2Cl6. Specifically, the concentration of Al2Cl7- increased in the composition range from 0.50 to 0.67 XAlCl3, after which it decreased. This change in the concentration of Al2Cl7- was due to its reaction with excess AlCl3, leading to the formation of Al3Cl10-. The average cathode current density was determined by the electrochemical experiments varying XAlCl3 from 0.50 to 0.71 in the AlCl3:BMIC solutions. The average cathode current density increased as the XAlCl3 increased from 0.50 to 0.67. However, it decreased when the XAlCl3 > 0.67. This trend can be attributed to the electroactive species Al2Cl7-. The Al2Cl7- promotes the reduction rate at the cathode, resulting in an increase in the average cathode current density.
