The sensitivity of radiochemical techniques makes possible the study of the initial stage sulfuric acid leaching kinetics of chalcopyrite and other copper sulfide minerals. High-grade Transvaal chalcopyrite was neutron irradiated in a TRIGA reactor to produce radioisotopes copper-64, iron-59, and sulfur-35. Dissolution rates were measured in the time interval zero to 60 minutes during which time significant anomalies were observed. First, an initial period of rapid dissolution lasting a few minutes; second, an arrest or "plateau" region usually lasting from 6 to 10 minutes; third, a second period of dissolution of lesser rate than the first. The effect of solution variables such as pH, oxygen partial pressure, and ferric ion concentration at different temperatures were measured. The initial rate data were correlated by considering the rapid reaction to be due to the dissolution of surface oxidation products or the formation of an iron depleted surface layer. Safety conditions in industry have greatly improved over time. However, around the world, in Canada, and in each province or territory, people are still the victims of serious industrial accidents. The increasing safety of people at work then continues to be an imperative in industry today.<p> So how do we achieve a workplace where no one gets hurt? Well, in simple terms, folks need to be protected from unplanned exposures to equipment or energy sources that can do harm. If you think about it, all of our efforts in loss management and safety should then be directed toward avoiding these uncontrolled events. And it works! Our safety performance over the years has enjoyed tremendous improvement due to this support for loss management and safety. We now explore best practices toward achieving that next step in safety improvement.<p> As shown following, a large combination of loss management activities act together to support safety performance. Many of these activities are interrelated and some people have described them as the ?inputs? into an approach or program for achieving safety. Using this description, it follows that the ?outputs? of the program are some of the advertised measures of safety we see around us today, such as injury frequency rates. <p> It is asserted that a leadership focus to regularly measure safety and loss management activites (so-called ?inputs?), as a basis for taking supportive actions to ensure their effectiveness, is the basis for safety results (so-called ?outputs?) that consistently achieve high standards of excellence.<p> The concept of managing input activities, as enabled by effective measurements, can significantly act to transform our focus and priorities in the workplace. Supporting input activities like strategies, plans, or procedures with our best efforts will get us to our intended goals. Tracking outputs alone will not.<p> Safety and production have traditionally been cast as competing objectives. When both objectives are mutually supported and considered, however, people will invent ways of doing work that support both safety and production, and any other business parameter. When done right, innovation through meaningful involvement of affected people in the workplace will support safety excellence in a manner that in turn improves business efficiency overall.<p> For a workplace to be safe, it then requires everyone?s help and participation to make it happen, a collaborative effort by management, leaders, and frontline folks with the power and responsibility to take appropriate action at every level in the organization. In this way, everyone becomes a leader in safety.<p> The achievement of commitment to loss management input activities by folks in the workplace is the basis for attaining safety excellence. A workplace founded on commitment supports a safety culture with a vision for safe work performance at outstanding or world-class levels of achievement.<p> One may ask if injury incidents will be eliminated with this commitment and focus on workplace safety? Well, despite our best efforts in this area, there is never a guarantee that things can?t go wrong. We are simply not perfect. There remains in our workplace complexities and unanticipated risks that can have disastrous consequences if not managed at every moment. And when it goes wrong, we need to know we?ve truly tried our best, and now we have more to learn so we can get even better. <p> That?s the challenge represented by the safety imperative, a challenge to take safety performance that next step, a fulfillment of our commitment to the moral obligation we have to each other?s safety. Since the early days of risk management, developments in technology and guidelines (ITA, ITIG, OGG, UCA) have advanced risk management and probable cost estimating, which are now widely recognized. WSDOT’s CEVP risk-based cost validation process is now established after 20 years. This paper traces these developments, summarizes advanced techniques, and presents examples of US and international projects with results. A particular case of using advanced risk evaluation to allow enhanced-capability TBMs to be considered in a competitive bid process is presented. Further advances, including the use of digital twin risk-based representation of complex projects, are described.

"The process of filtrate loss of low solid-phase drilling fluid at different content of polyanionic cellulose is investigated by the standard filtration test. The test results showed that when time of filtration is same, the filtrate volume decreases linearly with the increase of content of polyanionic cellulose. When content of polyanionic cellulose is same, the velocity of filter loss decreases nonlinearly with the increase of time and the velocity of filter loss will reach a stable value. The filtrate volume in 7 to 8 minutes can reach half of the total filtrate volume. At the same time, the velocity of filter loss of drilling fluid decreases nonlinearly with the increase of viscosity. When apparent viscosity is between 3.5~4.15 mPa.s, decrease speed of velocity of filter loss is quick. The results are helpful for characteristics evaluation of filtrate loss of drilling fluid and control of filtrate loss.IntroductionDuring the process of drilling, water of drilling fluid can leakage into stratum, the water can result in instability and collapse of borehole wall. At the same time, the original ratio of drilling fluid will change. The density of drilling fluid will increase, the performance of the drilling fluid will change. Controlling amount of filtration is important to drill successfully. The additives of controlling filtrate loss are mainly two types, particle materials and polymer materials. High-molecular polymer is a kind of high-molecular material, has the adsorption effect, high polymer protection, can improve the advantages of slurry viscosity (Xu,2004 and Dehghanpour,2001). Some scholars carried out some study on the polymer material fluid loss agent in recent years, these study mainly focused on CMC, HEC, MHEC, CMHEC, starch and its derivatives(Zhang,2005 and Chevron,2009).About PAC (polyanionic cellulose) as drilling mud additives, a few of scholars carried out some relevant work. Plank (1992) applied PAC into ordinary freshwater drilling fluid and analyzed temperature stability of freshwater drilling fluid. Bennion (2000) applied PAC into drilling fluid and analyzed effect of polyanionic cellulose on strata inhibitory. Huang (2011) analyzed effect of PAC on properties of the high-density water-based drilling fluid. Mahto (2004) applied PAC into fresh water and salt-water drilling fluid and analyzed effect of PAC on rheological properties of the drilling fluid. Wang (2008) applied PAC into alkaline drilling fluid to study various performance of drilling fluid. PAC is a renewable resource and has good application prospect (Ankara, 2005). So it is very important to understand the effect of PAC on filtration process of drilling fluid.The test was conducted by changing the content of the PAC in drilling fluid. The object of this paper is to understand effect of polyanionic cellulose on filtration process of the low solid-phase drilling fluid."

"The as-cast microstructure of two commercial-size ingots of aluminum alloy 3004 produced by the electromagnetic casting process was quantitatively characterized. This involved the quantitative determination of through-thickness and across-width variations in dendrite cell size, grain size, macrosegregation of alloying elements, interparticle spacing, and the types, volume fractions, and sizes of the constituent or second phase particles. More than ninety-five percent of the constituent phases in the ingots consisted of the A16(Mn,Fe) phase; the desirable a-Al 12(Fe,Mn)3Si phase was not detected in any of the ingots by Guinier X-ray diffraction analyses or electron probe X-ray microanalyses. A significant microstructural heterogeneity through the thickness and across the width of both ingots was observed. For example, macrosegregation, and the sizes of the constituent phase particles, dendrite cells, and grains increased concomitantly from edge to mid-width and from surface to center of the ingots. There was a -20% depletion (negative macrosegregation) of Mg and a +54-87% enrichment (positive macrosegregation) of Ti in the center of the ingots. With the exception of grain size, there was no significant microstructural difference between the two ingots examined. The causes and practical implications of the observed microstructural heterogeneity in the ingots are discussed.IntroductionThe first step in the fabrication of majority of wrought products of aluminum and its alloys is the casting of large ingots or billets of simple shapes (round or rectangular). The sizes of the ingots vary from 10 mm to 450 mm diameter or 25 mm to 780 mm thick. The quality of the finished products is established at the ingot casting stage. This is because the microstructural characteristics, such as secondary dendrite cell size or arm spacing, amount of alloying elements retained in solid solution, macrosegregation, and the characteristics of second phases, produced during casting cannot be reversed by subsequent processing. Up until twenty-five years ago, the effect of as-cast microstructure of large ingots on the structure and behavior of thin sheets (0.34 mm thick) during drawing and ironing processes was incorrectly assumed to be minimal or nonexistent. This was based on the erroneous notion that the thermal treatments and large reduction (>99.94%) and strain that the ingot undergoes during production of the sheets completely destroys the original ingot structure and its inherent heterogeneity. However, the effects of ingot structure can, a priori, be deduced from the observed effects of constituent phase particle size, type and volume fraction on recrystallization, development of texture during annealing and deformation, and earing. In fact, careful examination of the behavior of products produced from different size ingots or castings have shown that the original microstructure of the ingot has a direct impact on the properties and performance of the end products."

Resin anchored rock bolts are an effective tool to control the deformation of an underground opening because they combine high support capacity with fast installation. However, there are still numerous shortcomings concerning the understanding and interaction of the system bolt-resin-rock. Field and laboratory test series have been conducted for evaluating the load capacity and bond strength of resin grouted rock bolts in different host rocks under axial load. This paper describes that the behavior and shear strength of the system bolt-resin-rock depends on the rock type and discusses a simple correlation between peak shear strength and shear stiffness in the ratio 1:1000 which may moreover be helpful for estimating rock bolt capacity after installation.

Recent studies by the authors into the behaviour of jointed rock masses using direct shear testing have confirmed that joint spacing has a significant effect on rock mass strength. The rock mass failure envelopes assessed from these tests have been compared to failure envelopes obtained using the Hoek-Brown GSI criterion. Good agreement between measured and estimated GSI strength envelopes where obtained when joint spacing was considered in the assessment of GSI. Les études récentes conduites par les auteurs sur le comportement des joints rocheux employant l&apos;essai direct de cisaillement ont confirmé que l&apos;espacement a un effet significatif sur la force de la masse rocheuse. Les enveloppes de ruptures obtenues pour ces essais ont été comparées à l&apos;enveloppe de rupture obtenue en utilisant le critère GSI Hoek-Brown. Une bonne corrélation a été constatée entre les enveloppes obtenues expérimentalement et les enveloppes calculées par la méthode GSI quand l&apos;espacement des joints a été pris en considération dans l&apos;évaluation de GSI. Die Bruchbereiche der Felsmassen die von diesen Untersuchungen entwickelt wurden, wurden verglichen mit den Bruchbereichen, die man mit der Anwendund der Hoek-Brown GSI Formulierung erhaelt. Eine gute Uebereinstimmung zwischen gemessenen und errechneten GSI Festigkeitsbereichen wurde erzielt, wenn der Abstand der Risse in der Berechnung der GSI in Betracht gezogen wurde.

In German hardcoal mining approximately 1 or 2 cases of spontaneous combustion are recorded per 10 million tonnes of saleable output. In approximately every 20th spontaneous combustion case, CH, is ignited. By the example of a fire caused by spontaneous combustion on Friedrich Heinrich colliery, an overview on the measures taken for firefighting and explosion prevention is given. These measures comprise (in sequential order) - early fire detection by CO-monitoring, - gob-sealing measures against ventilation air leaks, - full-space inertization of the coalface subsequent to a CH,- deflagration, - installation of a target inertization of the caved-in gob under the protection of the full-space inertization, - re-opening of the fire zone and reestablishment of the ventilation-air current, - completion of the salvaging work with continued target inertization of the caved-in gob and further sealing measures (monolithic packing), - sealing of the coalface after salvaging. The measures described allowed gain of control of a safety- critical (because close to the face) gob fire caused by spontaneous combustion, in spite of a CH, deflagration, within few days only, and salvaging of equipment from that coalface and start-up of the follow-up coal-face on schedule. The measures taken as well as the experiences gained allow deduction of general safety criteria for fighiing of gobfires caused by spontaneous combustion, and for controlling the explosion risk. e.g. - warning and alert thresholds for early detection of fires, - criteria for spotting of the zone of fire, - rules for tightening caved-in gobs, - thresholds for the retreat of firefighting crews from the vicinity of the zone of fire, and for starting ineiization, - considerations for positioning of and strength requirements for stoppings with/without inertization, - flow-by-volume adjustment of inertization, - safety rules for work with respiratory apparatus in the inertized zone, - safety rules for the re-opening of zones of fire. The considerations end up in the conclusions that the duration in terms of months of the classic cycles of sealing, waiting, and reopening can nowadays be reduced to a few days only by purposeful combination of full-space inertization and locally confined tar- get inertization of the gob area. The earlier high risks incured by the mine resuce squads en- trusted with sealing of zones of mine fires under explosion hazards can be reduced by the method described, provided the safety regulations are conformed with. In this way, intertizing contributes substantially to reduction of down-time caused by mine fires, to preservation of recoverable parts of the deposit, and to improved safety of the fire-fighting crews.

The OptiPit® software program is developed based on expertise gained at the Colorado School of Mines (CSM) using Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP) techniques. This program has been developed to satisfy the need in the mining industry for a multi-time period schedule and cutoff grade optimization tool that handles large scale open pit and underground mining operations involving many dumps, stockpiles, complex processing options and blending requirements. The current software (or earlier development versions) has been beta tested and used on various large scale projects within Placer Dome Inc., Newmont Mining Corporation, and Phelps Dodge Corporation since 2003. Through the use of this software, these companies experienced additional value creation by optimizing mine sequences, cutoff grades, material process flows and stockpiles under complex operational and processing constraints. This paper will present simple case study results to demonstrate the power of OptiPit® when used as a cutoff grade optimization tool. Furthermore, the paper will show, by example, how significant the difference in the Net Present Value (NPV) of a given project can be, depending on whether results are obtained by way of cutoff grade optimization using OptiPit®, or by using traditional breakeven cutoff grade approach.

Discrete (digital) signal processing techniques are proving to be very valuable tools for miners using the block cave method. Waveform analysis of different measured signals associated with active mining provides valuable information on production dynamics and safe operation of the mine. For example, correlation of the 3D surface displacement velocity waveform and the production output waveform reveals a remarkably predictable time-varying physical process. Studying the geometrical and temporal relationship between these two signals opens a broad window through which new management techniques become apparent. In this paper we discuss the signal processing techniques used to study these relationships, as well as the related implications for mining. This research was carried out in association with the Chevron Mining underground molybdenum mine in Questa, New Mexico. Some of these new techniques will be integrated into the decision management process at the mine and will provide insight on ore production, draw control, and safe reclamation. The science of signal processing involves the analysis and interpretation of physical processes that vary with time. Two general categories of signals1 are recognized. A continuous signal is a waveform of varying amplitude that is continuous in time (such as a sine wave). A discrete signal is a sequence of quantized values. The independent time variable and amplitude are sampled periodically such that we only know the value and shape of the waveform at the sampling frequency. Displacements measured by a Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver are an example of this. Discrete signals may be studied in the time, frequency, autocorrelation, or wavelet domains. In this paper the amount of ore extracted from the mine and the measured surface displacements are analyzed in the time domain.

Public-private partnership efforts are working to create green landscapes from abandoned industrial sites. Fabricated soils, potentially an essential element of such landscapes, are designed to substitute for topsoil on the areas free from ground cover and plant community. The aluminosilicate matrix and humus form the soil micelle - the primary unit of any soil complex. Humus formation is a process based on carbon-nitrogen interaction. Sources of carbon can be materials rich in easily composted products like cellulose and polyphenols (plant leaves) or aged lignin polymers (saw dust from different woody plants). The pathways of carbon-nitrogen complexes are discussed. Properties of the fabricated soil components were examined by bio-tests and plant models.

"Abstract The paper refers five examples of executed diaphragm walls with one to five levels of anchorages. For each example a comparison is made between the results of the design using the traditional criteria and the ones obtained by using the Eurocode 7 and the Portuguese Norm related to the EC7 (NP EN 1997-1 2010), as the Eurocodes consider the possibility of each European country to adopt their own geotechnical parameters as these may vary from one country to another. A comparison is also made with the behaviour of these diaphragm walls during its construction phase; so the values from the design that were adopted in the construction are listed in tables 2 to 6 in the “Construction Options” columns. From the referred examples the author presents his conclusions.1 - INTRODUCTIONIn the so-called “traditional criteria” the soil parameters (dry unit weight, angle of internal friction and cohesion) have values obtained through tests or empirically. It is assumed that the characteristic values of the soil parameters adopted in Eurocode 7 are equal to the soil parameters adopted in the calculations by the “traditional criteria”. In the present paper the design according to the EC7 was made considering only the ultimate limit states and the respective Cases A1 and A2.The partial coefficients used for the actions in the present paper were those on Table 1:2 - CONSIDERED EXAMPLESThe five examples correspond to the situations of figures 1 to 5, and the respective results are summarized in tables 2 to 6.For all the considered examples, that are case histories, a simplified method published by Matos e Silva (March 2000) was adopted. This method attains good performances when compared with other more sophisticated ones as the finite elements and the elasto-plastic methods as described in a paper published by Matos e Silva (2000). All the obtained values were compared between them and with the so-called “Construction Options” that were the values adopted by the designers of the considered examples. Keywords: Magnetostriction, magnetic properties, Pd(Fe,Co,Ni) single crystals Fe-Pd, Co-Pd and Ni-Pd alloy systems show appreciable magnetostrictive strains that are of interest for sensor applications. These systems exhibit congruent melting minima. In this work the magnetic and magnetostrictive behavior of congruent melting Fe-Pd, Co-Pd, and Ni-Pd compositions have been examined. The alloys examined include Fe-54.9 at.-% Pd, Ni-45.4 at.-% Pd, and Co-45 at.-% Pd. The paper describes the growth of bulk single crystals of these alloys using Czochralski technique. X-ray diffractometer was used to obtain rocking curves that were used to determine the [001] crystal direction. Magnetostriction in [001] direction was measured using strain gages. Magnetic properties were measured using a vibrating sample magnetometer. Ni-Pd showed the highest magnetostriction values among the congruent melting compositions. Magnetic and magnetostrictive behaviors of these alloy single crystals are presented.

The quality of resin used in South African collieries is currently controlled according to South African Bureau of Standards, "SABS-1534:2002". It has however been found that resin which passed the SABS tests failed in underground short encapsulation pull tests. An investigation was therefore conducted to determine the characteristics of resins that are currently being used in collieries. A series of in situ short encapsulated pull tests was conducted to determine the effect of expired resin on support performance. The results showed that the longer the time after the expiry date the poorer the resin performance. A series of resin-torque tests has been performed using Anglo Coal&apos;s testing facility. The following parameters were investigated on different resins: Spinning speed, Mixing time, and Setting time. An attempt was also made to develop a new quality control procedure for resin. This procedure enables mining personnel to make sure that the quality of resin can provide the required support performance. The effect of spinning speed on resin performance was also investigated. The results showed the resin gelling times of resin decreases as the spinning speed increases. It is found that over-spinning with slow speed roofbolters may result in decreased bond strengths. It was found that a 30-second resin (10-second spin, 30-second hold) should never be spun more than 20 seconds, even with very slow roofbolters (100 rpm).

Jet grout column formation at large depths are prone to several uncertainties, such as inaccuracy in setting out boreholes, drilling deviation, soil variability and reduced jetting energy at the nozzle. This would result in shorter cutting distance of the jet, with potential lack of interlock between grouted columns. A design strategy for mitigating the risk should include a soil investigation program aimed at discovering potential variability in soil conditions at the locations of jetting. Determination of soil strength profiles with depth would be useful for evaluation of jetting parameters and prediction of the achievable cutting distance at any depth. Selection of design column spacing should include allowance for setting out accuracy, verticality of the boreholes and the achievable jet cutting distance. For deep jet grouting operations, it would be necessary to take into account the energy losses at the nozzle inlet; however the increase in the presiding pressure at the nozzle outlet at depth is small relative to the range of jetting pressures commonly employed and would not affect the cutting distance to any significant degree. Design column spacing should not be so close as to cause problems with ?masking? which may lead to localized ungrouted zones of soil. For effective field control, boreholes should be cased up to the top elevation of the grouted zone so that the orientation of the borehole can be measured prior to grout injection. An analytical equation for calculating the cutting distance is proposed for adjusting jetting parameters where necessary to compensate for drilling deviation and changes in soil conditions. It is preferable that jet grouting trials be executed at elevations that correspond to the actual production jet grouting depths for accurate evaluation of jet cutting performance.

NPV is a static measure of project value which does not discriminate between levels of internal and external risk in project valuation. Due to current investment project?s characteristics, a much more complex model is needed: one that includes the value of flexibility and the different risk levels associated with variables subject to uncertainty (price, costs, exchange rates, grade and tonnage of the deposits, cut off grade, among many others). Few of these variables present any correlation or can be treated uniformly. In this context, Real Option Valuation (ROV) arose more than a decade ago, as a mainly theoretical model with the potential for simultaneous calculation of the risk associated with such variables. This paper reviews the literature regarding the application of Real Options Valuation in mining, noting the prior focus on external risks, and presents a case study where ROV is applied to quantify risk associated to mine planning.

Zoning is the legal means by which land use can be controlled. Although zoning laws have historically been quick to prevent quarrying, one is hard pressed to find zoning ordinances which specifically state that land should be used (or held in reserve) for quarrying and prevent other uses such as recreation, housing, etc. This situation is especially true when the mineral to be quarried has a low intrinsic value such as sand, gravel, and crushed stone. The chance of a gold mine surviving urban sprawl is probably considerably greater than that of a sand and gravel pit, even though it is possible that the dollar value of the sand and gravel&apos; would exceed that of the gold mine. The research reported herein was concerned with two major topics: to delineate the real costs associated with the non-protection of our construction aggregate resources (growth minerals) and to develop a computer simulation model which would aid planners in making economically sound decisions. This paper describes the problems faced by the mineral aggregate industry and discusses the role of computer simulation in planning problems. It briefly describes a simulation model which has been developed and previously reported12 and discusses the results of a pilot study conducted on the Tri-City area (Albany, Schenectady, and Troy, New York). 3

In 1998 an initial objective was given to the author, to process valuable off grade High Carbon Ferro Manganese (FeMn) metal fines profitably. The previous attempts that had been made to re-melt these metal fines through the furnaces had resulted in poor furnace operation, mainly to do with lack of electrode penetration and furnace bed permeability. It was decided that the method to resolve these problems was to agglomerate the metal fines. During the study on the agglomeration of the metal fines, a decision was made to use furnace baghouse dust and stockpiled furnace baghouse dust and sludge (DSF) as a ?filler? in the metal fines. The primary reason for using baghouse dust was to eliminate an environmental hazard, whereas the secondary reason for using the DSF was to utilize manganese units contained in the dust. The off-grade metal fines and dust were compacted using a brick press, with cement and aluminum rich plastic clay as a binder, to obtain agglomerate that was cost effective. Through the re-melting of the agglomerated off-grade metal fines, it was realized that this agglomerate concept could have other uses, that of replacing ores on the furnace, at a lower cost. The agglomerate recipe was changed to create an agglomerate that had a high manganese to iron ratio, this replaced Comilog ore on the furnaces, thereby reducing overall furnace unit costs. Future work concerning agglomeration, is to reduce furnace costs further through agglomerating .0.5mm ultra ore fines and .0.3mm Gloria and Nchwaning sludge. Using this agglomerate replaces a portion of the Gloria and Nchwaning lumpy ore on the furnaces at a lower cost. This would eliminate problematic material that exists at the ASSMANG Manganese mines.

Flotation behavior, of magnesite and dolomite pure minerals was studied separately. Rice bran oil (a source of fatty acid ) was used as a collector for both minerals . The aim of this study is to find a separating zone in the flotation of these pure minerals to be used in the separation of their mixture. Factors affecting the flotation process, such as pH and collector, were studied. It was found that magnesite can be separated, from its mixture with dolomite, in the pH range of 5-7. At this pH range flotation recovery of dolomite reaches~98% where magnesite reaches ~20% only. Besides, the effect of collector concentration on the flotation shows that the separation of magnesite from dolomite is feasible at a collector concentration of 3x10-4 M. At such concentration, dolomite recovery reaches ~98%, where magnesite reaches 25%. The differences in the flotation behavior of dolomite and magnesite were investigated by studying the adsorption isotherms of rice bran oil on magnesite and dolomite surfaces. The adsorption study indicates that while there is an excessive adsorption on dolomite surface, the adsorption density on magnesite was restricted to be lower than monolayer capacity. The adsorption behavior of dolomite and magnesite was discussed in the light of their solubility and crystal structure. It was found that due to the higher solubility of dolomite than magnesite, Ca2+ and Mg2+ ions are available and more reactive on dolomite surface increasing collector adsorption. In addition, it was indicated that dolomite mineral has a crystal lattice structure more compatible to the geometry of the fatty acid carboxylic group than magnesite. However, the adsorption of collector on dolomite surface is more compact and more regular than on magnesite surface.
