This was a description by the poet of what occurred over two centuries earlier to Hannibal’s troops as he passed through the Alps. Interestingly, the pass that many feel is the route that Hannibal chose, Col de la Traversette, is the sight of possibly the earliest avalanche mitigation known. Monastery records describe a tunnel built in 1470, near the top of the pass designed to protect pilgrims from the upper slopes. For the next several centuries, avoidance and reinforced structures were the primary tactics to defend from avalanches

"The development of indicators to assess the sustainability of mineral raw materials operations is amajor task with respect to its actuality and difficulty. This holds true even more when dealing withenvironmental indicators.The use of existing environmental indicators in the mineral raw materials industry leads to false orat least distorted results. Therefore the Institute of Mining Engineering I from the RWTH AachenUniversity developed indicators and an assessment system for the mineral raw materials industryon operation, company and sector level on behalf of the Federal Ministry of Economics and Labour(Bundesministerium für Wirtschaft und Arbeit, BMWA) and the Federal Institute for Geosciencesand Natural Resources (Bundesanstalt für Geowissenschaften und Rohstoffe, BGR).In total 30 indicators were defined and designed to assess the performance of the mineral rawmaterials industry in terms of sustainable development, 10 indicators for each pillar (economical,ecological and social pillar).The following paper describes some of the results focussing on the development of environmentalindicators. These had to be adapted or completely new designed in order to match the specificcharacteristics of the mineral raw materials industry."

During late 2010, a scientifically founded water spray system was developed for continuous miners (CM) (Patent Pending) that reduces respirable dust exposure for miner operator by about 30%. It includes engineered sprays around the cutting drum, outer bit-ring sprays, chassis sprays and side cutter boom sprays. About 3.6 ? 4.5m (12-15 ft) behind these sprays is additional sprays that spatially cover the area between the CM chassis and the mine roof and ribs. The spray system uses approximately the same volume of water as currently used on CMs with similar operating pressures. An Illinois mine decided to implement these concepts on a CM during rebuild stage. Dust control performance of the rebuilt CM was evaluated using gravimetric sampling and real-time monitoring using multiple personal dust monitors (PDMs). The average results based on about 105 cuts show about 30% and 20% reduction in dust exposure for the miner operator, and the haulage unit operator. Visibility in the mining areas was also significantly improved. The coal company has already decided to implement the system on all their CMs.

The present work considers the essence of fragmentation: on the level of a simple model as a material response to the curvature accumulated by it at large deformations. It is on this basis that the correlation between curvature and fragment sizes is determined. It is shown that at deformation the area of curvature center inevitably changes. It is revealed that a specific value of variation of center surface area, i.e. ^As parameter, is numerically equal to the value of curvature acquired by a material. Minimum sizes of fragments and grains depending on ^As have been estimated, and the dependence of this parameter on strain has been established. Besides, the present paper considers the effects exerted by curvature center geometry, material distortion, directions of deformation and thermal warming up in the localization zones on structure refinement when various techniques are applied.

The paper will also explore vibration prediction, neighbor relations, and related topics, such as blast plan submittal. Various projects from metropolitan construction blasting operations will be used as examples. Examples include blasting in the inner city, next to pipelines, and in housing developments.

This experimental study was done to determine pathological feature of vibration injury to the peripheral nerves in the hind limbs of rats exposed to 7 days of vibration. Materials and Methods Animals: Twenty four male Sprague-Dawley rats weighing 350-400 grams were randomly divided into two groups: sham control group and vibrated group. To document vibration-induced changes in the experimental model, the sciatic nerve was used because it contains both motor and sensory fibers and is relatively superficial in the posterior thigh. Customized Vibrating Platform: The hind limbs of the rats in the vibrated group were exposed to vibration in a custom-built vibrating apparatus consisting of two platforms: a smaller vibrating platform on which the hind limbs of the rat are secured, and a larger platform on which the remainder of the body rests. The vibration parameters (frequency 43.5 Hz, amplitude 1.5mm, acceleration 4.75G, velocity 6cm/sec., and displacement of 3.0mm) of this model were measured. Methods: Rats were anesthetized with 35mg/kg of intraperitoneal Nembutal (phenobarbital) and their hind limbs fixed to the vibrating platform by Velcro loops. Both hind limbs rest on the vibrating platform while the remainder of the body rests on the larger platform. The rats were vibrated 4 hours a day, for 7 days, with close monitoring of the vibration parameters. The 4-hour duration of hazardous vibration was based on recommendations from the British Standards Institution. The sciatic nerve of rats not exposed to vibration, but similarly anesthetized and secured to the vibrating platform, acted as controls. At the end of seven days of exposure to vibration, nerves from both the vibrated rats and the control rats were harvested after perfusion of the lower half of the body using glutaraldehyde as described below. Neural Fixation: The aorta was cannulated, and the inferior vena cava was nicked and the animal was initially perfused with 0.9% buffered sodium chloride. This was followed by perfusion of a filtered mixture of 3% glutaraldehyde and 3% paraformaldehyde fixation solution, The tissue was subjected to post fixation by routine. The neural tissue was then submitted for light and electron microscopy. Results While light microscopy showed minimal histological differences between vibrated (n=12) and control nerves (n=12), the changes revealed by electron microscopy were dramatic. These included thickening of the epineurium, as well as thickening of the myelin sheath as compared with normal nerve. Also, the axon plasma was detached from the myelin sheaths, and many vacuoles were seen between the myelin laminae(Fig.1); These changes were found in all vibrated animals, and in the whole segment of each vibrated nerve. CSIRO has been experimenting with supersonic flows as a method of rapidly quenching metallic vapours. Cooling rates above 106 °C/s have been achieved. The supersonic flow conditions are achieved by adiabatic expansion of the vapour through a Laval nozzle into a vacuum chamber. This paper will describe the basic physics of the process, outlining computer fluid dynamic (CFD) modelling of flow in the nozzle, the effects of different flow conditions on the condensation process and discuss the practical design issues associated with operating supersonic nozzles. Results obtained from a CFD model of the nozzle, which compared two methods of incorporating condensation, showed that inclusion of condensation substantially changes the conditions in the nozzle. Most noticeably, the effect of condensation produces a region in the nozzle where the temperature remains almost constant.

This paper discusses modern practices in the extrusion of steel. Particular emphasis is given to a description of the Ugine Sejournet method of extrusion, involving the use of glass as a hot work lubricant. Other methods are also mentioned. A brief history of extrusion is presented; present practices in the quality extrusion of tubing and solids are described; and the future potentials of the) process as a tonnage producer are briefly discussed. The advantages of extrusion and the reasons for the use of a glass lubricant, as well as the various methods of using glass, are given. The process, as described, is being used in the manufacture of large commercial quantities of stainless steel tubing and sections. This extrusion process is an essential and unique means of forming such atomic-age materials as titanium, zirconium, molybdenum and other super alloys all of which are materials required in the creation of nuclear installations.

Noranda?s Brunswick mine is a 10 000 t/d producer of lead-zinc-copper-silver ore that has been in operation since 1964. Mining of this multiple lens deposit is primarily by blasthole stoping techniques between 400 m and 1200 m below surface. The combination of a high overall extraction ratio, an overall steeply dipping tabular shape, and high horizontal stresses (twice the vertical) have elevated the induced stress regime to levels comparable to much deeper operations. Improved mine design, and a better understanding of how the rock mass responds to mining in high-stress environments is essential to improve overall recoveries and maintain safety. Seismic monitoring has proven to be an essential tool at Brunswick, for both short-term safety of workers, and long-term strategic planning. Practical case studies illustrate how seismic data, particularly source parameter information, can be used to measure the rockmass response to mining and improve mining layouts in difficult regions. As the global trend continues toward mining in deeper, higher stress environments (e.g., South African Witswatersrand Basin, Sudbury Basin) and as local extraction and thus ground stresses continue to increase in existing deposits, seismic monitoring will play a critical role in mining safely and economically.

Technological advances in underground coal mining have reduced fatalities but may not have reduced worker exposure to cumulative injury risk factors. The objective of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of cumulative injuries before and after the implementation of technological advances in underground coal mining and to make a general cost estimate for these injuries. A previously published algorithm was utilized to identify cumulative injuries within the Mine Safety Health Administration (MSHA) database for two data sets: 1983-1984 and 2003-2004. For both, the following were determined: the number and percentage of cumulative injuries, the average days lost, the average age at the time of injury, the average years of experience and the general cost estimate by body part. The percentage of cumulative injuries remained largely unchanged (37 percent in the 1983-1984 period and 33 percent in the 2003-2004 period). The average number of lost days due to cumulative injuries increased (36±55 days and 62±82 days, respectively), which may have been due to the increased worker age (seven years older in the 2003-2004 period), increased length of employment (seven years longer in the 2003-2004 period) or other factors such as changes in medical practices. Cumulative injuries to the back decreased by 10 percent, while cumulative injuries to the knee increased by 8 percent. The reduction in back injuries may be due to the implementation of assist devices, while the increase in knee injuries may be related to kneeling/crawling in low-seam mines. Cumulative injuries were found to remain a major financial burden on the industry. Recently, National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) developed tools to assist mining companies with incorporating an ergonomics process into their existing health and safety programs. The participating companies have reported tremendous success. Therefore, it is recommended that ergonomics processes be implemented as a means to systematically identify and address the root causes to cumulative injuries and ultimately reduce costs.

Stilfontein Gold Mine, located approximately 160 km west of Johannesburg, produced both gold and uranium from 1952 through to the early 1990s. On decommissioning the mine infrastructure, treatment plants, rock dumps and three tailings facilities were left to be rehabilitated at considerable cost to the mining company. The community that had grown up with the mine and had settled in the mine village were faced with deteriorating socio- economic conditions.   Mine Waste Solutions (MWS), a company with a socio-economic Vision expressly created by DRD (Pty) Ltd and Fraser Alexander (Ltd) for the purpose, took over the mine surface infrastructure with the objective of closing it down in an economically sustainable manner by recovering materials, converting mine infrastructure to useful purposes and re-mining of the tailings to recover residual gold to finance the project. A business case was prepared and presented successfully to investors and bankers and the project was commenced in 2003.   The paper covers the scope of the project and gives an account of the practical lessons that were learnt as the project developed over a period of five years. Key technical issues that are covered by the paper are the re-mining techniques that were deployed to clean up the old tailings dam footprints and the selection of the deposition site to minimise the incremental impact associated with the tailings and concurrent rehabilitation of the facility. In addition the paper will outline the positive benefits that were generated for the community and the improvement that was achieved in the physical environment.   The paper illustrates clearly how a mine can be closed in a manner that produces benefits for the community, the environment and the investor.

I propose to outline the main social changes which are taking place and their impact on the Minerals Industry. Also the changing way we do business and what are the skills needed to manage that change and diversity. How are Associations and Institutes responding to this ever changing environment? More specifically, what is my Vision for the Institute to assist professionals to achieve greater and continuing professional excellence in their chosen professions?

Truly integrated, quantitative, 3D GEOmetallurgical (or mineral system) characterisation, classification and 3D modelling should provide a cradle to grave unifying link across the exploration and mining value chain. All too often, spatially representative (quantitative) characterisation and modelling of a mineral system is delayed until feasibility stage, incurring a significant opportunity cost. The application of robust GEOmet characterisation methods early in the project lifecycle (at exploration stage) improves ground selection, exploration, and Mineral Resource estimation outcomes, long before there is a need for metallurgical test work. The zinc recycling is assuming more and more importance. A lot of zinc secondaries and wastes are ready to be collected and converted to zinc metal. The impurities present in these materials and the technical and economical problems that some traditional ways of treating these materials are facing, call for new technologies. The EZINEX Process, a fully hydrometallurgical process industrially proven to convert oxidised zinc bearing materials directly to zinc cathodes, is an innovative process that can deal with any kind of zinc waste/secondaries in a very powerful way. In this paper the highlights of this process will be shown and discussed to demonstrate the robustness of the process and its economic viability.

THE word "development," as used in connection with .mining, is a rather general term and in most instances must be qualified or explained before the exact thought in the mind of the user is made clear. For instance, by the development of a mining district is often meant its entire facilities of mineral production, such as railroads, towns, mine plants, etc. In speaking of the development of a property its prospecting by test pits or diamond drill borings may be referred to; or it may be the mines, strip pits or quarries from which the coal, ore or rock is won. But, as a rule, when the development of an individual mine is spoken of the idea in mind is the system of underground workings by means of which the mineral is recovered and transported to the surface. It is this character f development that is considered in this paper. The discussion will be confined to the ordinary room-and-pillar, system of mining. practically horizontal coal seams that is used in most bituminous coal mines in this country, and to only two phases of this subject; viz., what is properly included under the head of "Development"' as it appears on the books of a coal company or the inventories of an examining engineer, and how its "value" should be determined -by the accountant or engineer. No absolute rule or definite agreement covers these points, yet these questions are far more than academic. Development is often an important part of a mining company's assets, affecting the amount of its invested capital (and hence its rate of taxation under present Federal income tax laws) as well as the value of its total assets and the amounts chargeable to cost of coal and to depreciation.

Outburst of gas, coal and rock can be defined as sudden release of coal and rock accompanied by large quantities of gas into the working face or other mine workings. The outburst events appeared rarely in some metal mines has generally occurred in salt and coal mines especially bituminous coal mining. The most important factors that influence the occurrence of outbursts are gassiness of the coal seam, tectonics, properties of the coal and rock and vertical and lateral stresses occurring in the seam and or rock or part of the coal seam. This paper describes the problem of gas and coal outbursts in underground coal mines. The outburst events occurred in Zonguldak Coal Basin located on the Black Sea coast was investigated since 1969. Geological and gas conditions of Zonguldak Coal Basin are described. The incidents are analyzed statistically with the criteria such as amount of coal and gas outburst, depth of workings, effect of tectonism, thickness and inclination of coal seams.
