Copper, nickel, zinc and other ?penalty? metals are found with gold together in nature, and have a similar chemical affinity for cyanide used in leaching operations4. As a result, solutions that come from the heap leach pads contain a significant concentration of penalty metals along with the desired gold. In solution, gold and cyanide form the complex Au(CN)2- that is readily adsorbed onto activated carbon. Penalty metals as individual metal ions also load onto activated carbon and, depending on the concentration of cyanide and the pH of the solution, can form various cyanide complexes. Some of these complexes can also load onto carbon while some are significantly inhibited from loading. Copper, for example, can form the dicyanide complex Cu(CN)2-, the tricyanide complex Cu(CN)32-, and the tetracyanide complex Cu(CN)43-. At a low pH and a low concentration of cyanide, the dicyanide complex predominates. At a higher pH and a higher concentration of cyanide, the tetracyanide complex predominates. Without excess cyanide, however, individual copper ions can remain present. Activated carbon is used in gold extraction because it is highly selective for gold and less so for other metals, such as copper3. However, copper has the ability to adsorb (?load?) onto activated carbon and block the adsorption of gold when it is in the dicyanide form and in a high enough concentration. When copper is in the tetracyanide form, copper loading is significantly inhibited, allowing for the maximum gold recovery. In order to ensure the tetracyanide complex is formed, a combination of both available cyanide and elevated pH must be present. In the South Area of Newmont Mining Corporation?s Gold Quarry mine in Carlin, Nevada, copper and nickel loading becomes a problem when certain acid generating zones of the heap are leached. Copper, nickel, zinc and other penalty metals become leachable and the lower pH uses up more of the cyanide and creates carbon loading conditions for the metals. This decreases the carbon?s ability to extract the gold from solution, decreasing the recovery and increasing the concentration of gold in the barren solution that leaves the carbon columns. In this study, operational data from March through to May of 2007 is presented to show how Newmont developed a quick fix to lower pH and elevated metal concentrations that were causing low gold loadings on activated carbon at their South Area Leach (SAL) heap leach operations. Laboratory tested were also conducted to examine the chemical kinetics of metal loading and the individual effects of increased cyanide concentrations. THEORY Copper I ions form four different complexes with cyanide in solution: the monocyanide species CuCN, the dicyanide species Cu(CN)2-, the tricyanide species Cu(CN)32-, and the tetracyanide species Cu(CN)43-. The species are formed from the following reactions: [Cu)(?+-+ K1 (1) Cu ß2 (2) --+?+23)(3CNCuCNCu ß3 (3) --+?+34)(4CNCuCNCu ß4 (4) ] where K1 equals 1019.50, ß2 equals 1024.03, ß3 equals 1028.65, and ß4 equals 1030.35. Along with these complexing reactions, hydrogen cyanide and water also dissociate in solution, as per the following reactions: [H?+-+ KH (5) OHOHH2?+-+ KW (6)] where KH has a value of 109.24 and KW has a 1014 value2. These six chemical equations compete with each other, with domination of one over the others dependent on the CN- and H+ concentrations. Each complex also has different properties when it comes to its loading behavior on activated carbon. The dicyanide copper complex and the monocyanide copper complex have an affinity for adsorption onto activated carbon that is greater than the affinity of gold cyanide for adsorption. They also have a lower solubility in water, which enhances adsorption. The tricyanide copper complex and the tetracyanide copper complex are water soluble and have an affinity for loading adsorption on activated carbon that is less than the affinity of gold cyanide for loading adsorption1. There are three prime reasons for this phenomenon. First, the extra cyanides mask the metal ion more, which blocks the main adsorption characteristic of the complex. Second, the complexes are also larger, making it harder to physically fit into the active sites on the carbon. This helps make the latter two complexes kinetically inhibited from adsorption, freeing carbon active site to load with gold cyanide complexes. Third, it is also important to consider the expressions of the mass and charge balance. These balances describe all the overall concentration of copper and cyanide in solution, as well as marking overall charges of the ions in solution4. This is important because significantly changing the charge from positive/neutral to more negative is another reason for activated carbon to reject adsorbing the higher cyanide complexes. The speciation of copper and other penalty metal cyanide complexes in solution is dependent on the pH. At lower pH values, increased hydrogen ions (H+) can out-compete metals for cyanide ions. Lower free cyanide in the system leads to the lower cyanide species of copper cyanide predominating, with a noticeable concentration of the free metal, monocyanide and dicyanide species of copper cyanide. At higher pH values, hydrogen ions are significantly reduced, reducing the kinetics of HCN formation. More free cyanide remains in the system, allowing for more complexing. With this higher amount of cyanide in the system, the tetracyanide species of copper cyanide predominates, also with a noticeable concentration of the tricyanide species of copper cyanide. En ese sentido, el presente texto señala el análisis del cobre a través del método secuencial como una herramienta que define el modelo minero y mejora los parámetros de extracción de cobre lixiviable de acuerdo con la clase mineral. Asimismo, mejora del diseño mineralógico y geológico, sobre la base de lo cual se planea desarrollar pruebas de lixiviación de acuerdo con las características del mineral y su relación con el IS, como herramienta para estimar las recuperaciones a escala industrial.

Wall control blasting practices are necessary to reduce the impact of blasting on mine faces but can also have a significant negative impact on mine productivity and operating costs. The conventional practice in deep open pit mines is to use so-called trim blasts adjacent to pit walls. To provide burden relief these trim blasts have fewer rows than full production blasts and are fired to a cleared free-face; hence they are termed æunchokedÆ. This practice leads to scheduling constraints on the pit operations and can cause ore dilution due to excessive muckpile movement. The use of such trim blasts stems from the perception that increased wall damage results from æchokedÆ blasts. These concerns are based on the unproven assumptions that blast vibration levels and explosive gas penetration increase with increased blast burden and face confinement. This paper describes work undertaken as part of a major investigation into wall control blasting at the KCGM Fimiston Mine, Kalgoorlie, Western Australia. It details a study to assess damage effects due to blast burden. Borehole air pressure measurements and borehole video camera inspections were done behind a series of single blastholes drilled with varying burden distances, as well as behind a dedicated trim blast and a full production blast. It was found that the measured damage effects, including visible rock cracking, dilation, and the limited extent of gas penetration behind the blastholes, did not vary significantly with burden or blast type for the cases tested. This result was in complete agreement with detailed vibration measurements conducted by Blair and Armstrong (2001) during the study, which found that vibration was independent of blast burden. As a result of these investigations, changes to the blasting practices at the mine were implemented. Dedicated trim blasts and free-face blasting have been replaced by modified production blasts and the practice of æchokingÆ blasts has been introduced. This has resulted in a significant improvement in productivity and cost savings without compromising pit wall integrity.

Well-designed and maintained haul roads are the key to minimizing truck haulage onroad hazards and costs, as well as increasing productivity. In practice, however, designing and managing a haul road for optimal performance is often difficult to achieve, especially when resources assigned to design and construction are constrained. By understanding how a road design is developed from geometric, structural, functional and maintenance considerations and, critically, the interplay between these components in design and operation, optimal performance can be achieved. This paper briefly summarizes the evolution of mine haul road design, from the seminal USBM work of Kaufman and Ault in 1977, through to current geometric, structural, functional and maintenance management design components. These augmented design and management guidelines have been developed over the past decade, both in response to the requirements of mine operators for safer and more efficient haulage systems, the truck manufacturers’ requirements for a more predictable and controlled operating environment and the recognition of human factors as a significant contributor to haulage accidents. While the human factor is the most problematic to address in a road design, the paper shows that the more that is known about human error, the better a road can be designed to accommodate those actions or non-standard practices that would, on a poorly designed road, invariably escalate an error into an accident.

TheFiji Islands are remnants of a once continuous Solomon-Vanuatu-Fiji-Tonga volcanic arc (the Vitiaz arc), located at the boundary between the Indian-Australian and Pacific plates. They record a history of: (i)                  arc volcanism the late Eocene to late Miocene, (ii)                an extensive magmatic response to arc rifting (5.5 - 3.0 Ma) during which volcanism was dominated by shoshonitic to tholeiitic basalts, and as rifting continued, (iii)               a transition from arc to intraplate volcanism.   The Hunter Ridge-Hunter Fracture Zone separates the inactive South Fiji Basin from the actively spreading North Fiji Basin, and has been considered to be a transform zone, almost parallel to the motion vector of the Australian plate. However rocks dredged during the 1993 æAlizeÆ cruise, from along the northern part of the Hunter Ridge are typical arc tholeiites, and therefore demand that subduction has occurred beneath the Hunter Ridge sometime during the last ~5 Ma. The Kadavu Island group, south westernmost Fiji, lies at the north-eastern end of the Hunter Ridge-Hunter Fracture Zone, and possibly results from oblique subduction of South Fiji Basin oceanic crust, which may have accompanied the anticlockwise rotation of Fiji during opening of the North Fiji Basin. These islands consist dominantly of 3.4 - 0.5 Ma old medium-high K andesites and dacites, with many traits typical of subduction-related volcanics, ie predominance of intermediate members (55 - 65% SiO2) no Fe enrichment, TiO2<1%, and negative Nb-Ta anomalies. These features contrast strongly with volcanics from elsewhere in Fiji around this time, where volcanic centres produced Om-like intraplate olivine basalts. The Kadavu Islands become gradually younger to the southwest, and show a significant decrease in K2O with time. The north easternmost islands (Astrolabe islands) containing the oldest rocks (~3 Ma) have shoshonitic affinities and are considered to be of similar age and composition to the youngest shoshonites found elsewhere in Fiji.

AngloGold South Africa region currently consists of twelve gold plants. These plants use a combined total of $20 million of cyanide per annum. Of this, the major portion (60%) is consumed at two Ergo dump retreatment plants. Historically the primary motivation for cyanide control at Ergo has been one of leach/cost optimization. However, more recently, with the increased public awareness of cyanide in the environment, a secondary but increasingly important motivation for control has been to ensure that only the minimum amount of cyanide is added to the process whilst not compromising leach performance. Following a brief overview of the Ergo process, the methodology in determining the amount of cyanide to be added is described. The paper then traces the developments in cyanide control from very basic manual systems to the current automated control system. In line with the increasingly sophisticated control systems, developments also took place in regards to the method of cyanide analysis. The development of these analysers is also discussed. Whilst cyanide is one of the major drivers, if not the major driver of gold dissolution, it cannot be viewed in isolation particularly with respect to the relationship between cyanide and oxygen as ascertained from the Elsner?s well-known equation. Consequently, in order to control cyanide addition, knowledge of the relative cyanide/oxygen profiles is necessary. Various means investigated at Ergo for pulp oxygenation have therefore been included for the sake of completeness. Finally a comparison is made of the control achieved from the current system compared to the original manual system. The knowledge and experience gained at Ergo is now being used to draw up guidelines for the installation and optimization work at the other AngloGold plants. The net effect of this will be reduced cyanide consumption for the region, which also, apart from the obvious economic benefit, translates into a reduced environ-mental risk.

Existing processes for the recovery of platinum group metals (PGM) from UG-2 ores place stringent requirements with regard to chromite content upon feed material to the plant. An alternative hydrometallurgical process for which this is not an issue is proposed that involves reductive roasting of the ore followed by leaching with HCl/chlorine, ion exchange, and recovery of PGM from the ion exchange eluate by reduction. Problems associated with leaching of PGM are discussed and results of laboratory testwork for each of the process steps are given.

Seven legendary figures of American mining will be enshrined in the National Mining Hall of Fame in ceremonies on Saturday, Sept. 7 at the Little America Hotel in Salt Lake City, UT. The 15th annual induction banquet will begin with a reception at 6 pm, followed at 7 pm by the dinner and the program. Of the seven inductees, one is living. He is Alexander Murray (Bud) Wilson, 80, of Los Altos, CA. Wilson led Utah Construction (later Utah International) to become one of the world’s most diversified and successful mining companies in the 1960s and 1970s. It was acquired by General Electric in 1976.

Traditionally, most Australian iron ore mining operations have been surface-based. Processing plants were designed to handle dry ores. In recent years mining operations in the Pilbara have progressively moved below the water table exposing wet, sticky ores which have caused lost efficiency in screening operations as particles tend to agglomerate and adhere, blinding screening media. Miners and vibrating screen manufacturers have experimented with a shift from linear motion to elliptical motion screens. Elliptical motion conveys and lifts particles. Effective on flat deck (horizontal and inclined) or sloping decks it can be configured to provide a controlled transport rate, applying pressure in all directions to maximise screening efficiency. In practice, elliptical motion screens have proven to be effective in dislodging sticky particles from screening media, reducing blinding rates and improving screen efficiency. Moisture and clay content change during the life of a mine. These changes are sometimes the effect of seasonal rainfall, in other cases due to increased groundwater and clay content as mining operations go deeper. To compensate for such changes and optimise screen efficiency, changing the ‘shape’ of elliptical screen motion is required. This has traditionally required shutting down processing plants and making mechanical screen adjustments. Plant downtime is costly and machine adjustment has been a ‘trial and error’ practice. This paper will explore the results of a field trial that is currently underway in Brazil of a next generation elliptical motion screen design that allows operators to make changes to exciter rotational direction, speed and screen stroke angle, through electronic drive phase control. The machine’s electronic drive system synchronisation is enhanced for stability with a unique mechanical timing system. Operating at up to 6 g, screen adjustments can be made on the fly without stopping production. Early trial results are showing up to 50 per cent improvement in screen efficiency compared with traditional elliptical motion machines under certain feed conditions.

As much as 100% of the gold and 67% of the silver in a sulphur-bearing hydrometallurgical leach residue have been transferred to copper metal at copper smelting temperatures by dissolving the partially calcined residue in an iron-bearing slag maintained in equilibrium with the liquid copper metal and matte phases. The precious metals can then be recovered by conventional refining techniques. Copper can be recycled at least four times without any detrimental effects on gold and silver transfers and recoveries. Apparent copper recovery in the .process can be over 100% because of the copper content of the residue. Based on slag analys.es, the overal1 recovery of gold in the copper metal and matte phases varies from 94% to 100% under all conditions investigated. On the? same basis, silver recovery varies .from 9S% ?to 99% under optimum conditions, but is only 4S% to 73% under other, less attractive conditions. Unaccounted for silver losses of' about 30% make it difficult to determine the major factors affecting ?silver transfer and recovery. A method for implementing the technology on a commercial scale at a Canadian copper/zinc smelter has been proposed. A preliminary economic assessment and comparison of the proposed pyrometallurgical process with conventional cyanidation indicates that either process is economically attractive for recovering gold and silver from leach residues. Although the capital costs are higher, the pyrometallurgical process is simpler, has higher recoveries, lower operating costs and no .potential environmental problems related to cyanide disposal.

Any hypothesis for the origin of the Otago gold-quartz lodes must account for the following observations. 1. Southeast of Glenorchy, where the schists hosting the lodes are comparatively unaffected by Neogene Alpine Fault deformation, the dominant strike of the vein systems is NW-SE, parallel to the axis of greatest post-metamorphic uplift in the Otago Schist belt (Paterson, 1986). 2. The lodes are fault-hosted, with some developed along steep, low-displacement normal faults (eg Barewood, Bendigo, Nenthorn), implying NE-SW extension, and some developed along low-angle thrusts (eg Macraes) implying, in apparent contradiction, NE-SW contraction (Teagle et al, 1990). 3. The mineralising fluid was of metamorphic origin (McKeag and Craw, 1989), but while some of the lodes developed in a mesothermal environment at considerable depth (eg ~10 km for Macraes), others appear to have formed at very shallow depth (eg <1 km for Nenthorn) (Craw and Norris, 1988). 4. The timing of the mineralisation is generally poorly constrained but postdates the main Rangitata schist metamorphism. It probably initiated during early Cretaceous exhumation and unroofing of the schist belt (140 - 120 Ma?) and may have continued well into the Tertiary (Craw, 1989). Estimates for the relative ages of the different lodes are largely speculative but, based on pressure estimates from fluid inclusion studies, Macraes likely represents the deepest and oldest lode system while Nenthorn (just 12 km to the southwest) is perhaps the shallowest and youngest (Craw and Norris, 1988).

Sixty percent of the mines responding to the sixth annual Mining Cost Service labor survey reported increases in wages averaging 3.4% over the preceding 12 months. Only one mine reported a decrease in wages and this was accompanied by initiation of a substantial profit-sharing plan. Thirty-nine percent reported no change in wages. Thirty-seven percent reported using some form of incentive bonus plan. Mining Cost Service annually surveys coal, metal, and industrial mineral mines throughout the United States. Information about wages, benefits, and incentive bonus plans is part of an extensive data collection program to monitor cost areas of significance to the mining industry. This year, 131 mines responded to the survey. The data is collected by sending questionnaires to personnel managers at active mining operations. The information included in this article was taken from the returned forms, from labor contracts provided by some of the mines, and from followup telephone calls. This year's data was collected between November 1988 and February 1989.

The ARTA 2008 Project (Alpha Ridge Test of Appurtenance) was a Canadian Government sponsored deep water seismic survey carried out on the high arctic permanent polar ice cap. This Geological Survey of Canada operation was the second seismic research project in the high Arctic and was monitored by the Danish Government. Utilizing 100% air support from Eureka and then helicopters from an ice based tent camp north of Ellesmere Island, the five week study was accomplished in the early spring just after the sun returned to the far north.

With the gold industry looking to process more complex ores, the online measurement and control of cyanide addition to the gold leaching circuit has become more crucial. This paper compares the two commonly employed "free" cyanide online analysis methods (amperometric and potentiometric end-point silver nitrate titration) with the common site laboratory rhodanine endpoint silver nitrate titration and ion selective electrode methods. Measurement differences between these methods are presented and discussed for cyanide solutions containing copper and zinc with varying cyanide to metal ion ratios. The resulting cyanide available to leach gold is also compared with these measurements.

"This paper presents the development of a new grinding circuit steady-state modeling system. It is fundamentally based on the “functional performance equation”, which has now been used to improve the performance of numerous grinding circuits. This equation characterizes the two distinct efficiencies that are at work in a ball milling circuit, and how these relate to overall circuit productivity. It does so based on the particle size chosen to distinguish between coarse and fine (product size) material. Now, by applying it to all the material size classes, a simple yet reliable ball mill model was created. Combined with cyclone recoveries, the complete, detailed grinding circuit performance can be exactly reproduced mathematically by the computer program. It can then be used with separate process equipment application engineering methods to systematically engineer grinding circuit improvements. The development, features, uses and limitations of the system are described.INITIAL DEVELOPMENT OF THE CIRCUIT MODELThe Functional Performance Equation for Closed Circuit Ball (or Pebble) MillingIt has been shown that closed grinding circuit performance can be effectively characterized by the “functional performance equation” for closed ball or pebble milling circuits (McIvor, 2006a). One method of its derivation is summarized here for convenient reference.First select a cut-off size to define “coarse” versus “fine” or product size material for the grinding circuit. Any particle mesh size can be used to differentiate between coarse material and fines, but the circuit target P80 is often an effective choice for these purposes.Any energy expended on “fines” is wasted. It also generates “extreme fines” often detrimental to downstream processing (McIvor and Finch, 1991). Only the portion of the mill power draw that is expended on coarse material is effectively used. This portion can be estimated from the mill feed and discharge size distributions (McIvor, 1988a) by taking the average of the percentage of “coarse” material in the mill feed and discharge. We can define the thusly calculated percentage of the mill power that is expended on coarse material in the mill as the ball mill circuit “classification system efficiency” (CSEff). The “effective mill power” (EMP) can be calculated from the total mill power (TMP) as follows."

The geoscience matrix method has proven useful for valuing metallic mineral properties lacking delineated mineral resources or reserves. However, the method explicitly excludes commodity markets from the factors considered; marketability is assumed. When valuing industrial mineral properties, marketability cannot be assumed, it must considered. Market considerations may also significantly affect the standard weightings of geoscience matrix parameters such as the proximity to known deposits. In some cases, such proximity is desirable but in many cases it is undesirable. Application of the geoscience matrix method to industrial mineral properties therefore requires thoughtful, market-related adjustments to the basic geoscience matrix methodology.

In the USA, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) does a lot of work and has provided news of interesting new developments. Marcia L. Harris describes an ?Explosibility Meter: ?In underground mines, coal dust explosions are prevented by the addition of rock dust sufficient to render the coal dust inert. Federal [US] regulations require 65% and 80% incombustible content in samples taken in intake airways and return airways, respectively, assuming a nominal coal dust size of 20% minus 200 mesh. The Coal Dust Explosibility Meter (CDEM), a hand-held instrument developed by NIOSH uses optical reflectance to measure the explosibility of a rock dust and coal dust mixture.? The CDEM is now commercially available. It provides real-time results during rock dust surveys instead of waiting weeks for laboratory results1. ?With real-time results, the potential for a disaster can be mitigated immediately. The CDEM displays the percent incombustible content as well as a colour indicating the relative explosibility of the coal and rock dust mixture. A red read-out indicates that more incombustible material is required to inert the coal and rock dust sample, while a green read-out indicates that the dust sample is sufficiently inert. When the mixture is marginally explosible, a yellow read-out is indicated. The red-yellow-green output depends upon the particle size distribution of the rock and coal dust mixture with the finer size fraction being more explosible.?

Lime addition to acid mine drainage waters (AMD), possibly accompanied by aeration, has been the basis for their remediation by precipitation of predominantly metal hydroxides. An efficient novel alternative technique causes precipitation of double M(II)-M(III) hydroxy sulfates which readily precipitate and are easily dewatered. When the Fe(II)/Fe(III) + Al(III) ratio of the AMD is appropriate, the Green Precipitate (GP) Process provides a more effective alternative to normal liming/aeration. The process can be adapted to give a continuous in-line treatment by the choice of suitable computer-controlled reactors designed to improve the liming efficiency, reduce scaling and control the rate of treatment. The processes are described in terms of the chemistry involved.

Keywords: Recycling, Electrodeposition, Recovery, Dilute, Dissolved Metal Ions In order to facilitate the recovery of pure metals from solutions containing a mixture of dissolved metal ions, a pulsed electrodeposition method was developed. Using this method, it is possible to selectively remove metal ions from solution based upon the electrochemical potential of the particular ion desired. The use of pulsed electrodeposition rather than direct current electrodeposition creates an electrodeposited material with better morphology, increases electrical efficiency of the process, and avoids problems with short circuiting between electrodes. Using this method, it is possible to recover dissolved metal ions in a purified form in one simple step, and therefore maximizes recovery of the metal ions while obtaining them in a saleable form. This method is likely to be useful in improving the recycling process for numerous complex metal mixtures and alloys.

All mining operations are superimposed on natural hydrologic systems. As a result, mining operations are influenced by natural hydrologic processes and require water management systems to successfully conduct mining activities. Managing water and mining-related solutions is a critical task at all stages of the mine life because of the time-dependent nature of natural and mining-related flows. Effective operation of the mining water management system requires a “systems” approach that integrates the time-dependent effects of all water and mine solution handling components. This paper discusses the concept and application of dynamic systems modeling to address the time dependent nature of mining water management systems.
