Auxiliary equipment was assembled around a purchased oscillograph to permit observation of the current and voltage characteristics of low-energy, capacitance-discharge sparks having durations of at least 10 mµ-sec. Circuit details of the assembled apparatus, performance characteristics of the complete system, and some preliminary data from representative self-initiated sparks are given in this report. INTRODUCTION One of the subjects of continuing research by the Federal Bureau of Mines Division of Explosives Technology is the ignition of explosive-gas mixtures by means of low-energy capacitance sparks. Quite early in these investigations it was recognized that understanding the gas-ignition phenomena would be facilitated by detailed information about the performance of the ignition source (spark) under the actual conditions of interest; however, the sparks of practical interest are nonrepetitive transient phenomena whose duration could reasonably be estimated to be in the time range of 1 mµsec. to 1 µsec. As such, the only feasible method of obtaining detailed information was and is oscillographic representation of the pertinent current and voltage transients. The processing of heavy mineral concentrates can be enhanced by the use of power ultrasound to clean their surfaces of oxidation products and fine coatings, mainly through the large, but very localized forces, produced by cavitation. Results are presented of the application of power ultrasound to remove coatings from the surfaces of mineral sand concentrates in order to improve the sharpness of their high-tension separation and, in some cases, the quality of the low iron components such as zircon. Improvements of 10–15% in recovery and up to 20% in grade compared to unsonicated material were achieved in a single stage laboratory high-tension separation. Cavitation also ensures that a fresh, clean surface is presented to leachants during the leaching of suspended solids. At the same time, the effect of cavitation and the shearing effect of the sound wave passing over the solids ensure that the saturated boundary layer is kept to a minimum if not completely removed. This application of power ultrasound helps to speed up leaching processes as applied to the removal of excess alumino-silicate contaminants in some ilmenite. Alabama's non fuel mineral industry produced $560.6 million of mineral commodities in 1990. This was an increase of $99 million over the 1989 value and a new State record, a record achieved despite the slowdown in the national economy. This was the first year that Alabama's mineral value exceeded one-half of 1 billion dollars. The value of stone and cement, the two leading mineral commodities in terms of sales, increased $71 million over that reported for 1989 and was the primary reason for the new mineral value record. The State ranked 21st among the 50 States in total mineral value and contributed 1.68% of the total U.S. mineral value of $33.3 billion.

Introduction Longwall coal mining in the US has steadily increased since its introduction in 1960. There are now 108 systems operating. (Sprouls, 1986). Advantages of longwall mining include higher productivity, improved safety, and greater coal recovery. Respirable dust, however, is one of the more serious obstacles to realizing the full potential of longwall mining. Early in 1980, the US Bureau of Mines (USBM) initiated extensive in-house and contract research to identify and evaluate effective methods of controlling respirable dust exposure of longwall face personnel (Niewiadomski, Jankowski, and Kissell, 1981). It was found that several control procedures must be combined to assure compliance, using control techniques appropriate to the dust source. These techniques can typically be grouped into the following categories: reduction of dust generation; dilution of dust; capture or knockdown of dust; and dust avoidance. Control techniques can be divided into basic and effective dust control techniques; additional necessary controls; and optional supplementary controls. This information should allow longwall mine operators to select control methods applicable to their particular operations and to develop a dust control plan that meets Federal dust standards. Basic and effective dust control techniques There are three basic dust control techniques (Taylor and Jankowski, 1982) that should be implemented on all longwall mining operations. • A passive barrier or external water spray system design that confines shearer generated dust near the face and away from the operators. • Large quantities of water through the sprays, particularly the drum sprays, to aid in dust knockdown and prevent dust becoming airborne. • A cutting sequence that allows the shearer operators to work primarily on the intake-air side of the lead cutting drum. Shearer clearer There are some poorly designed shearer-mounted spray systems with nozzles directed upwind at the cutting and loading zone of the intake-side drum. These actually carry dust away from the face and upstream of the drum. Where, it mixes with the clean intake air (Fig. la,) and is carried out into the walkway over the shearer operators. The mining industry is at a crossroad. To sustain our technically based society, demands for commodities are increasing, and exploration for these commodities is a must. The debate is between sustainable development and the status quo and begins with exploration, where it is determined if a mineralized area contains enough potential ore to be mined economically. Mineral deposits are relatively rare and depend upon certain natural geologic conditions to form and may not always occur in locations that are most suitable to society. Exploration can be compatible with environmental protection and social responsibility, but difficult challenges face the industry to develop a property that is environmentally, economically, and socially responsible.

In looking to the future of mineral processing the focus is typically on improved processing units. Basically it is a search for an elusive wonder machine that could revolutionise the economy of mining: the sorter that strips 50% of the ore with only a few % loss of value; the comminution device that uses 5% of the energy while producing fully liberated particles; or the recovery device capable of producing a 99% recovery at 99% grade. These aspirations are propounded against a reality backdrop of sorters rusting in back yards, mill throughputs below design and varying by 30%, cyclones flaring and cut-sizes fluctuating, mediocre recoveries and soaring processing costs. This disconnect between aspiration and reality appears, to these authors at least, to be a mighty chasm. Moreover, it remains one over which we are expected to magically leap rather than methodically bridge. Indeed one may be forgiven for thinking that should such a wonder machine come along, taking advantage of it would be highly improbable. Questions would inevitably emerge on how to feed the correct material, how to cope with the wide variability of feeds, how to control such advanced equipment and how to handle the new product from such a machine. It is likely these questions might lie unanswered, or more regrettably, unasked. It is generally accepted that as an industry we are exceedingly unlikely to teleport from the current status quo to an entirely new reality in a single flash. It is our thesis that the probability of these magical machines materialising is remote, and even if they miraculously appeared, we simply wouldn?t know what to do with them. Rather, it is our contention, that a step change will only arise through a staircase rather than from a single giant leap. We should focus on building those steps and linking them together into a firm structure ? a workable mineral processing circuit. This paper addresses the alternative of a coherent set of modest but significant improvements, integrated to produce the step change we desire: essentially, a reduction of processing energy to below 40%, which we believe is achievable without recourse to any mystical machines. A key underlying capability to designing these dramatically improved processes, is the weaving of independent process models into a coherent circuit simulation, in order to design the new generation of mineral processing circuits. The efficient operation of an open pit mine presupposes that the slopes are maintained at an angle which closely approaches that of the ultimate stability of the slope. In order to do this in a safe manner, it is essential that the data relating to the behavior of the slopes be monitored and made available, through an instrumentation system, to the appropriate personnel so that soundly-based engineering decisions may be reached with the minimum of wasted effort. In addition to simply detecting potential failures, the system should also define what type of failure is developing; i.e., rotational, wedge, or dilational failures. Providing this data is the prime function of a stability monitoring system. Therefore, in an operating open pit mine, the instrumentation system must provide information which will have a direct bearing upon both the safety and the economics of the operation, as well as provide data which is pertinent to initial design, or to the re-design of slopes where developing instability is found to be a problem.6 It is possible to excavate pit slopes which will remain stable under extremely adverse conditions; however, such slopes would usually be so flat that they would tend to render the operation of a pit uneconomical which might otherwise be mined at a profit. On this basis, all practical pit slopes must be considered to be, to some ex- tent, unstable; if they are not, the design is too conservative and the mine is not returning its maximum profit. To reduce the problem to its fundamentals, one can simply state that the ideal pit slope design produces a slope which stands with zero maintenance for the entire life of the pit and then collapses into the final excavation as soon as the personnel and equipment have been removed. Such a design is impossible to achieve, but the fact remains that an efficient slope would hover on the edge of failure for the life of I the pit. As one retreats from this position, the profitability of the mine decreases because of an unduly conservative design.

The Discovery Expedition of St. Charles, MO chose to build its two-story museum in the flood plain of the Missouri River, near the starting point of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. Should the lower level be inundated at flood stage, plans call for the replica riverboats to be moved by trailer to higher ground. The museum's design required an open span structure with heavily loaded footing or piles. Spread footings could not be used due to the compressible soil profile. The location, in a historical district, precluded dynamically driven piles. Sixty-three uncased Helical Pulldown Micropiles were driven to the bearing stratum to support the museum with minimum disturbance. There were no spoils to dispose of during construction and the piles were completed in eight working days with minimum impact to the environment and neighborhood. The maximum working load required was 84,000 pounds (374kN). Test results are given in the form of installing torque.

The value of Alabama's nonfuel mineral production in 1983 was $361.3 million, an increase of $61.9 million over that of 1982. The increase reversed a downward trend that started in 1980 and established a new record high for value of nonfuel minerals in the State. Output of most nonfuel minerals increased to some degree with unit value increases creating the record-high value year. Cement, clays, lime, sand and gravel, and crushed stone were the major commodities produced in Alabama. Alabama led the Nation in the production of crushed marble; was second in bauxite; fourth in ferroalloys, dimension marble, common clay, and fire clay; fifth in bentonite and kaolin; and sixth in masonry cement and lime.

At this point in time, approximately 800 M tonnes (880 M tons) of coal are mined each year in the United States. Forty percent of this coal or approximately 320 M tonnes (350 M tons) is taken from underground coal mines, and from this subtotal 16% or 50 M tonnes (55 M tons) is from longwall panels (1). If, for the sake of argument, an aver- age extraction thickness of 1.5 m (5 ft), an aver- age extraction ratio of 50 percent and an in situ density of 1360 kg/ms (85 lb/ft3) for this coal are assumed, then the 320 M tonnes (350 M tons) of underground coal translates to over 310 km2 (76,000 acres) that is undermined each year. Con- sidering that the total U.S. production of under- ground longwall coal to date is approximately 345 M tonnes (380 M tons), then a total of approximately 165 km2 (41,000 acres) (considering 100% extraction) has been directly undermined by longwall coal production in the United States. If the angle-of- draw is considered, the total area affected by longwall subsidence in the United States is probably twice the above value or 330 km2 (82,000 acres) . In the future, a number of other miscellaneous factors seem likely to multiply the number of potentially damaging situations that occur due to longwall coal mining. First, the overall production of coal in the United States is expected to gradually increase. This factor is further com- pounded by both the fact that the percentage of the overall production due to underground mining is bound to increase, since the vast majority of U.S. reserves (68%) are only recoverable by underground methods, and the fact that the percentage of the underground production of coal that is recovered by longwall mining is drastically increasing (1). Finally, as the nicest underground reserves are depleted, the remaining reserves will tend to be deeper, which increases the affected surface area, and under denser population concentrations, which increases the likelihood and severity of possible damages. Overall, considering the number of factor which are biased towards increasing the amount of undermined acreage, it appears that there must certainly be a corresponding increase in the number of possible damaging situations due to longwall-induced, ground subsidence.

Foreword The complete history and early development of the Sullivan mine was fully covered in a paper entitled 'The Development of the Sullivan Mine and Processes for the Treatment of its Ores', prepared by the staff of the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada, and presented at the Annual Meeting of the British Columbia Division of the Institute at Trail in October, 1924. At a subsequent meeting at Blairmore, Mr. E. G. Montgomery read a paper on the mine, and in 1926 Mr. M. M. O'Brien brought the subject up to date at the joint meeting of the American and Canadian Institutes at Cranbrook. The present paper is necessarily based largely on these earlier accounts. Discovery and Early Development The outcrop was discovered in 1892 and the property was bonded and later sold to the Sullivan Group Mining Company, of Spokane. From 1896 to 1899, surface stripping and test pits (at A) around the outcrop exposed a vien of sulphides with varying amounts of lead and zinc. In some places, a 35 per cent lead ore carrying 15 ounces of silver was found. These lenses were of commercial value. With the completion of the Kimberley branch of the Canadian Pacific railway, in 1900, some systematic development was started. A shaft l00 feet in depth was sunk (at B). Shaft-house, boiler-room, and compressor-plant were erected, and a steam diamond-drill was put into operation.

The mechanical period of the geophone is the time required for an oscillation of the steady mass after an initial impulse is given it, and is determined by the effective stiffness of the spring joining the two parts together in relation to the weight of the suspended part. Explosives are used to mine coal. Any blast results in three size categories of products, namely over-, middle-, and under-size. Boulders can still be broken smaller in further operations after blasting. The under-size, for instance coal fines, negatively affects the mining efficiency. Their reduction ensures better returns. The paper concerns investigations aimed at reducing coal fines' generation. Inherent fractures are identified as one of source of fines. The discussion is therefore centered on establishing a relationship between the fracture occurrence, the explosive properties and the blast outputs evaluated in terms of the fines generated.

The assessment of landslide instability and risk has become a topic of major interest for both geoscientists and engineering professionals as well as for local communities and administrations in many parts of the world. In this paper, based on a new developed Geographic Information Systems (GIS) grid-based 3D deterministic model and taken the slope unit as the study object, the landslide hazard is mapped by the index of the 3D safety factor. Assuming the initial slip as the lower part of an ellipsoid, the 3D critical slip surface in the 3D slope stability analysis is obtained by means of a minimization of the 3D safety factor using the Monte Carlo random simulation. The failure probability of the landslide is calculated by an approximate method in which the distributions of f,c and the 3D safety factor are assumed to be in normal distributions. The assessment of the earthquake triggered landslide hazard is done by the dynamic displacement analysis using the index of the Newmark displacement. All the calculations are implemented by a computational system call 3DSLOPEGIS in that a GIS component is used for fulfilling the GIS spatial analysis function. Besides the results of 3D safety factor and probability, the possible landslide body and boundary can be three-dimensionally quantitatively identified. Dans cette étude, basé sur un modèle de maillage 3D et une approche déterniniste couplée au Système d'Information Géographique (SIG), étudiant la stabilité des versants , le lieu d'étude à risque est maillé suivant le facteur de sécurité calculé en 3D. En supposant que le glissement initial soit la partie inférieure d'un élipsoïde, l'analyse de stabilité pour le glissement critique 3D d'un versant 3D est obtenu grace à une minimisation du facteur de sécurité en 3D utilisant la méthode de simulation aléatoire de Monte Carlo. To reduce the respirable dust generated by auger-type continuous coal mining machines. The Approach: Use water sprays close to the cutting bits on the auger so that coal fragments are thoroughly wetted as they are formed to prevent dust dispersal into the ventilating air. How It Works: The "wet auger" system of dust control uses water sprays distributed on both shafts of auger type continuous miners. This approach has been tested underground by personnel of the Bureau's Twin Cities (Minn.) Mining Research Center on a Wilcox Mark 20 continuous miner, in a cost sharing contract with Buchanan & Sons Coal Company, Inc. Personnel of the Interior Department's Mining Enforcement and Safety Administration collected dust samples and analyzed the data. A test machine was fitted with six sprays on each auger (see Fig. 1). Water flow rates from 8 to 12 gpm at pressures from 90 to 120 psi, or about 8 gallons per ton of coal mined, were required.
