The Kumera Technology Center developed a unique type of steam dryer for drying copper concentrate in the mid 1990s. The dryer has been chosen in several copper smelter projects since 1999. To expand production capacities, the Norddeutsche Affinerie smelter, the Pirdop smelter of Cumerio, the Toyo smelter of Sumitomo Metal Mining and the Tamano smelter of Hibi Kyodo Smelting have carried out projects in which Kumera Steam Dryers were installed. The capacity of a single steam dryer varies from 70 t/h to 160 t/h. This article summarizes the latest operation results of the Kumera Steam Dryers in these smelters and introduces the progress of the ongoing projects in Yanggu Xiangguang Copper, Guixi smelter of Jiangxi Copper, Jinlong Copper, Boliden Harjavalta, and Onsan smelter of LS-Nikko Copper.

Residual stresses observed in rocks often result from non-compatible initial strains. These stresses can be determined when the incompatibility tensor associated with the initial strain tensor is known. The residual stresses in a cylindrical rock sample can be computed the sample is considered small enough for its incompatibility tensor to be constant. Les contraintes résiduelles, dont on observe couramment les manifestations dans les roches, résultent souvent de l’existence de déformations initiales non-compatibles. Ces contraintes peuvent être calculées lorsque le tenseur d’incompatibilité associé aux déformations initiales est connu. Les contraintes résiduelles dans une éprouvette cylindrique sont données dans le cas où le tenseur d’incompatibilité est constant. The development of feedforward semi-empirical control models for furnaces and the evaluation of mass balances are based on plant data. The models can only be as good as the data and it is therefore required to know the inherent uncertainty associated with the plant data. This uncertainty stems mainly from the fact that the slag, alloy or dust, have a distributed nature that depends on the degree of mixedness. It is commonly accepted that melts from open bath furnaces are well-mixed, and submerged arc furnaces less so. The impact of this assumption is significant, as a reasonably homogeneous melt could be represented by one sample only. As so much of metallurgical control depends on the assay information of the alloy and slag melts from furnaces, it was decided to characterise the possible variation in melt chemistry and temperature. Sampling campaigns and continuous temperature measurement of the melts were performed for different alloy and slag taps at a major ferrochrome producer. Both a submerged arc furnace and open arc furnace are evaluated in this way, by way of comparison. The slags of both open arc and submerged arc furnaces were found to be of similar degrees of homogeneity, with much spatial variance in the reducible iron and chromium oxides. However, it was found that the alloy melts deriving from open arc furnaces were significantly less homogeneous than the alloy derived from submerged arc furnace alloy production. The compositional variance could be related to the furnace operating conditions and it affects both metallurgical accounting and process control. In all cases it was found that the variance in melt solute components are larger than can be ascribed to analysis instrument error. It will be shown how this predetermined variance in melt composition could be included in process modelling and control.

Seattle’s Elliott Bay Seawall protects the 1½ miles of downtown waterfront between South Washington and Broad streets. The seawall supports the urban waterfront and infrastructure, including the Alaskan Way Viaduct and Alaskan Way, access to historic waterfront piers, and numerous essential buried utilities. Most of the original seawall was constructed between 1916 and 1936 over soft/loose non-engineered fill, estuary, and beach deposits. The majority of the original seawall was a pile-supported timber relieving platform that extended up to 60 feet behind the face of the wall (Figure 1). With maximum spacing between the timber piles of 3 to 5 feet, a virtual forest of timber piles were driven for the original wall.

A brief discussion of the methodologies involved in dewatering practices, particularly as used in Hawaii in coralline formations. A description of early dewatering practices includes a number of case histories; later dewatering practices also are detailed with case histories. There were disasters and some successes. Grouting generally was not successful. Deep wells are technically feasible and generally the economical solution to deep basement construction.

The stability of strip pillar is the key to successful strip pillar mining. In analyzing the stability of the strip pillar, the width of yield zone must be determined. The determination of the width of yield zone has been an important subject for researchers. In this paper, the numerical method was used to study the relationship between the width of yield zone in strip pillar and coal recovery ratio. The results showed that as the recovery ratio increases, the width of yield zone increases exponentially. Accordingly, the formula for determining the width of yield zone was updated and the effect of changing coal recovery ratio on strip pillar deformation is presented.

Water in mining, mineral processing and metal production on a life cycle basis has been at the top of agendas for various industries, government agencies, research organisations, academic institutions and communities. As a result, a number of water footprint assessment methodologies have been developed. However, their practical applications in mining and mineral processing industries with specific case studies are still rare.A key objective of the Minerals Down Under Flagship is to contribute to the long-term sustainability of the Australian mining and mineral industries. Researchers in the Mineral Futures theme have developed robust assessment methods to evaluate the impact of mining and minerals technology development on the environment. The future of mining and the mineral industry is strongly linked with its sustainability - better water management strategies will need to be implemented.Life cycle assessment (LCA) has been a recognised method for measuring the environmental impacts of products, processes and services. It provides a scientifically sound method of comparing products and processes using a common basis and identifies so called æhot spotsÆ and opportunities for reducing environmental impacts. The water footprint of mining, mineral processing and metal production using an LCA basis is still scarce in the literature. Research methodology is now being applied in detail for copper, gold and nickel. A primary focus has been the relationship between ore grade and water use for which mathematical models are being developed. These types of models provide inputs for LCA of mining and mineral processing plants and can identify water saving opportunities through scenarios and process route analysis.CITATION:Northey, S and Haque, N, 2013. LKAB’s Kiruna Mine, located above the Arctic Circle in northern Sweden, is the second-largest underground mine in the world today. The orebody is a world-class high-grade magnetite deposit, from which three raw ore products are extracted. We use mixed integer programming to determine a production schedule, i.e., which production blocks to mine, and when to start mining them, so as to minimize deviation from planned production quantities while adhering to the operational constraints of the mine. The resulting model contains thousands of binary variables and a commensurate number of constraints, precluding us from obtaining a schedule in a reasonable amount of time. To meet increasing demand of coal, underground mining is largely being replaced by the exploitation at deeper horizons and with greater complexities. The exploitation-proposition may be below not-to-be-disturbed surface properties or below water-bodies, posing a constant threat of inundation. Also, the mounting pressures to limit the adverse impacts on the environment bring the extraction-undertaking to face more challenges. An understanding of subsidence-mechanism and a rational quantification of subsidence parameters is a requisite herein. This paper presents such pragmatic quantification, validated at mine-sites in India. In comparison, better productivity, conservation and safety is ensured in this approach.

This paper deals with the development of environment performance indicators (EPIs) for the steel industry. Environmental performance has become one of the key measures of business success. Emergence of continuing pressure from customers, employees, government and NGOs for environmental performance evaluation (EPE) of industries has led to evolve a framework for the development of sector specific environmental performance indicators. EPIs can be used by steel industry for assessing the continual improvement in environmental perfromance, selecting various eco-friendly options, benchmarking, environmental reporting, technology assessment and dissemination, evaluating environmental impacts and building EPIs based environmental management systems. The objective of this paper is to develop EPIs for steel industry and provide framework for development of environmental performance indicators based environmental management system and its integration with the overall management system. An indepth discussion has been presented concerning identification of EPIs, eavaluation of significance of EPIs, their prioritization and its integration with Environmental Management Systems. A new methodology has been proposed for implementing EPIs based environmental management systems . The material presented is derived in part from PhD studies of Rajesh Kumar Singh.

Since its introduction in 2002, the modern air jig has processed a wide array of coals throughout the world. This paper explores the reasons and justifications for the installations and provides case history performance data. Specifically highlighted are air jig plants processing metallurgical coal in Colombia, bituminous coal in the United States and India and lignite in the United States and Spain. Each installation has unique reasons to justify an air jig facility. It is important to note that not all of the justifications were based on the ?most cost effective yield?, normally a mantra for coal preparation plant designers and owners. Dry jigging of coal has long been a proven technique for upgrading coal, the modern air jig, with its improved efficiency and operating systems simply extended the range of applications. In some cases, it even allows market quality coal to be produced when no other option is possible.

In order for solvent extraction technology to be acceptable as an alternative to existing jarosite precipitation circuits, iron must be cleanly separated and concentrated into a feed stream suitable for downstream iron by-product recovery which meets market specifications and economics. Ten years ago, significant progress was made in a joint McCill University/CANMET project that involved iron extraction with mono(2-ethylhexyl) phosphoric acid and stripping with HCI. Our iron solvent extraction research was reactivated recently by looking into this and other members of the organophosphorus extractant family. Our research focuses on the mechanisms and control of anion (SO42/CI) transport across the various phases (Rafinate/Organic/Strip), iron build-up in the strip liquor, and extractant stability/selectivity. In this paper, these issues along with some other performance parameters are discussed using data derived from an extensive search of the two commercially available and best known members of the organophosphorus family, di-2-ethylhexyl (D2EHPA) and mono-2-ethylhexyl (M2EHPA) phosphoric acid. Further in this discussion, the challenges lying ahead in the development of sx systems that overcome the deficiencies of D2EHPA and M2EHPA are outlined. In particular, the necessity of considering secondary separation technologies that can further concentrate iron values in the chloride strip liquor to levels economically attractive for the production of saleable iron oxide by pyrohydrolysis is addressed.

Agnico-Eagle started sinking the Penna Shaft in 1995 with a hoisting plant capable of hoisting 1800 t/d from a 2240 m deep shaft. Exploration success led to the installation of a hoisting plant capable of extracting 4500 t of ore and 1800 t of waste per day from a depth of 2210 m. The introduction of a new rope selection factor, permitting a safety factor of 4.0, represented the breakthrough required for a cost-effective project. This paper describes the process taken to introduce the new rope selection factor and its impact on the original plant.

The establishment and survival of different grass species and cultivars on various phytotechnic treatments at a limestone quarry was studied. The treatments applied were: a) bare soil, b) bentonite, c) bentonite-straw and d) asphalt-straw. According to the results, significant differences were found among species and cultivars, growing on different treatments as far as plant growth and survival are concerned. The seed germination was higher on bentonite -straw and asphaltic-straw than on bentonite but the plants survival were higher on bentonite. Lolium perenne had higher seed germination rate and better establishment than the other tested species at all treatments. However, the survival rate of Agropyron desertorum and of the cultivars palestina and chrysopigi of Dactylis glomerata was higher than of the other species.

1. “Daisy-Chain” concept The term “daisy-chain” stems from the fact that when the HotShot? detonators are connected there is a chain or electrical path for electrical current to flow from detonator A to detonator B, detonator B to detonator C etc until the path is terminated by an electrical means. The “daisy-chain” concept has long been used in electronic detonator systems, historically used in Expert Explosives’ ExEx 1000 5/6 wire system and currently in use in African Explosives Limited (AEL’s) Electrodet? electronic detonator system and has been adopted as the basis upon which the “auto-programmability” of the HotShot? electronic detonator system functions. HotShot? Detonators are connected to each other in a string, completing a “daisy chain”, and during the auto-detection mode of the control equipment, it is possible for the equipment to determine the order of hookup of the detonators as well as map the entire blast layout. The auxiliary components (Row Controllers & Branch Controllers) assist the control equipment in mapping the entire blast by indicating different points on the blast, i.e. The inflection point of a row of blast holes on a closed chevron timing pattern, the beginning of row of blast holes on open chevron timing pattern and extra blast holes or extra blast rows.
