This paper presents a case history on mitigating vibration problems associated with the installation of steel sheetpiles. The project in-cludes installation of steel sheetpiles for a utility trench within 40 feet (12.2 meters) of a very sensitive manufacturing facility. Numerous production line quality control instruments and manufacturing processes within the manufacturing facility are extremely sensitive to vibrations. To minimize the impact to the owner, we specified that the contractor perform a vibration study using different types of pile hammers. The results and conclusions of the vibration study are presented in this paper.

The importance of grinding as a unit operation in all industry has caused much effort to be expended toward improving the facility with which grinding can be done. Endeavor has continued nearly 100 years to formulate laws governing crushing and grinding. This has not been without controversy. However, grinding is an experimental science and our useful knowledge originates in experience. The recorded experience is grinding history. Today, many types of size reduction equipment, each with variations, are available to industry. Frequently, more than one type of grinding equipment will meet a requirement of grinding. However, an economic evaluation of installation and operating costs generally indicates a preferred type. The selection of grinding equipment requires' a consideration of the purpose in grinding, the characteristics of the material to be ground, equipment available for grinding, and the manner in which it can be applied best.

The 73rd Regular Meeting of the Rocky Mountain Coal Mining Institute convened at The Mark Conference Center, Lionshead Village, Vail, Colorado, and was in session at 10:00 a.m. Past President, Robert W. Wilson, President and General Manager, K&P, Inc., Golden, Colorado, called the meeting to order. The membership was asked to stand and pledge allegiance to the flag. As your immediate past president, it is my pleasure to have the responsibility of introducing our current President. But before I tell you about Ralph, I would like to make the following brief reflection, which I feel very strongly about: In these days of so much negativism toward our coal industry by so many people, we all must remember one thing as we go about producing energy for our country. Coal mining is just as American as the American hamburger, the American hot dog, and just as American as the flag to which we just pledged allegiance.

The zinc content of blast furnace and basic oxygen furnace dusts is low compared with electric arc furnace dusts and it is generally not economical to treat the dusts to recover zinc. However, they have a high iron content and removal of the zinc would allow recovery of the iron values. A literature review and thermodynamic analysis was undertaken and, as a result, several smelting options were identified. This paper describes experiments undertaken to develop understanding of metallurgical aspects of these processes which are not amenable to theoretical analysis. Dusts from an Australian steelworks were characterised in order to determine their mineralogical make-up and the form of the iron. The processing aspects investigated in the laboratory were slag-metal equilibrium and solid-state pre-reduction using reducing gases of compositions expected from bath-smelting processes. Particular attention. was paid to the deportment of zinc, sodium, potassium, phosphorous and sulfur between the phases formed during smelting and pre-reduction. The smelting results indicate that less than 10% of the zinc, sulphur, sodium and potassium report to the metal. About 99% of the zinc and potassium and about 80% of the sodium could be volatilised from the dusts by reducing them at 1,000°C with mixtures of CO, CO2, H2 and H2O even when metallic iron was not formed. The experiments indicate that smelting of blast furnace and basic oxygen furnace dusts should produce hot-metal of a composition which can be blended into the main stream of hot-metal in the steelworks.

Appraisal of industrial minerals beneath privately owned land requires a different approach and mindset from valuation of base and precious metals or energy minerals, and from valuation of government-owned mineral lands. First, is it the value of inground minerals or of mining rights that is being sought? Second, value to whom, the mining company, a potential investor, the mineral landowner, a lending institution, the property tax assessor, or a condemnor? Third, how should mineral value be apportioned between the land and mineral owner, and a mining company with limited years of lease-hold interest? These and many other questions must be addressed before a valuation method and Discount Rate are selected. For various reasons the Income Method is most often used, with Net Present Value calculations made for long term predicted mining income. Choice of an appropriate Discount Rate is critical.

The underground ventilation system at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant provides unparalleled ability to ensure safety of the workers, public and environment. Although small spatially, it can vary the airflow from 66,000 acfm to 460,000 acfm. It can automatically incorporate HEPA filtration in the event of radioactive contamination. Remote-capable regulators individually control the four main splits, and can be adjusted from the surface if necessary. A ventilation remote monitoring and control system provides real-time information. Future areas of concern include DPM compliance, system psychrometry, logic-based-real-time mine ventilation simulation and automation using PLC technology. This paper discusses the evolution of this system.

"XPotential Products Inc. has developed technologies to convert auto shredder residues and other forms of plastic waste into useful products such as posts suitable for retaining walls and parking curbs. The technology is competitive provided low-cost plastic waste is available, and could have applications throughout the world. The paper describes the technology used and illustrates the various processing steps. Development of the TechnologyPresently, state-of-the-art auto shredding yields approximately 75% ferrous and non-ferrous metals and approximately 25% by weight of auto shredder residue (ASR). Advances in metal shredding and non-ferrous metal separation technologies turned XPotential Products Inc.’s attention to ASR as a potential revenue source, or at least a means to markedly reduce the cost of disposal. This abundance of nuisance ASR was, in the company’s view, a potential resource as derelict autos and white goods were similarly perceived 40 years ago. As owners of General Scrap & Car Shredder Ltd. in western Canada, XPotential faced significant disposal costs for four shredders. This journey began over 10 years ago and took many twists and turns until a final course of action was chosen. The recovery of the metallic portion of vehicles and white goods has reached technological maturity and attempts to add value are now achievable only in very small increments."

The 68th Regular Meeting of the Rocky Mountain Coal Mining Institute convened in Manor Vail Lodge, Vail, Colorado, and was in session at 10:00 a.m. The meeting was called to order by Past President Max A. Robb, Vice President and General Manager, U.S. Fuel Company, Hiawatha, Utah. Mr. Robb welcomed the members and guests and was pleased with the large attendance. He then introduced President Joseph E. Ward, former District Man- ager, Denver Office, Coal Division, Joy Manufacturing Co. (Retired). A brief biography follows: Mr. Ward is a transplanted Westerner, having spent the greater part of his life in the Eastern and Southern areas of this country. In 1927, he graduated from what was then the Carnegie Institute of Technology in Pittsburgh, Pa., with a B.S. degree in Mining Engineering. He dropped out of school for a period between his Junior and Senior years and worked in the coal mines in order to obtain sufficient money to complete his education. Practically all his adult life since graduation, has been spent in or around the coal mines in this country. After graduation, he worked the next 15 years of his life as an underground supervisor, first for the Hudson Coal Co., in Scranton, Pa. and later for the U.S. Steel Corporation in Birmingham, Alabama. He then went into sales, selling basically to the coal mine industry and other mining operations. The last 13 years of his business career were spent as a district manager for Joy Manufacturing CO., 10 years of which were in the Coal Division of their Denver office, covering the Rocky Mountain area. He retired in August 1970 but still retains an active interest in the Rocky Mountain Coal Mining Institute and the Rocky Mountain Coal Industry it supports. He is a widower, his wife, Thelma having died in July 1970. He has two children and six grandchildren.

The selection of belt conveyor drive systems (*) is the subject of ongoing investigation. Frequently this choice has been governed by an incomplete perspective on the major considerations. A more comprehensive and objective approach is desirable. This paper presents additional factors which hopefully will broaden this perspective. BACKGROUND Conventional belt conveyors are powered by electric or electro-mechanical drives(*) mounted at the conveyor's head, tail, intermediate return span, or a combination of these (Fig. 1). A list of the drives reviewed is given in Table I. The following are main elements influencing the selection of the drive system: 1) dynamic characteristics, 2) economic factors such as capital cost, plant spares compatibility, reliability, availability, maintainability, and 3) environmental constraints. The principal dynamic characteristics of concern are the reactions of belt forces generated by the drive system during starting of the conveyor. Another attribute for consideration is the application of multiple driven pulleys used to 1) lower the conveyor's belt tension requirements, 2) increase the expected tonnage throughput, allowing for possible drive component failures, and 3) increase the plant spares flexibility related to the drive assembly.

This report, sponsored by the Bureau of Mines, presents the results of an examination of the safety of the Blind Shaft Borer (BSB) shaft sinking system and an alternative modified BSB design concept in comparison to conventional shaft sinking technology. Detailed study of the two systems was also performed to identify and recommend design changes for optimum safety conditions. A comparison of the BSB systems with conventional shaft sinking was made an the basis of relative risk levels. Risk incorporates both the frequency and the potential consequence of accidents. A safety evaluation of the component operations of the two BSB systems was performed using a Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA) methodology. The results of this analysis show generally that both BSB systems are safer than conventional shaft sinking. The potential risk of conventional shaft sinking operations could be reduced by over 30%, on the average, with the use of the original BSB system, and by an average of about 10% with the modified BSB. Design change recommendations to further improve the safety of these systems include a better fire suppression system, improved man haulage systems and more compact hydraulics. An operational safety manual was also developed for the modified BSB system.

The adsorption and desorption of gold cyanide by activated carbon is significantly influenced by particle size of the activated carbon particles and the chemical environment. A series of adsorption and elution experiments have been performed with ten different particle size fractions. The tests indicate that although the ultimate adsorption capacity is independent of the activated carbon particle size, the adsorption rate is strongly affected by the particle size. Further, desorption characteristics using traditional Mintek and atmospheric Zadra procedures reveal interesting trends with variation in particle size and will be discussed in this paper.

"Isothermal solidification can be used to form strong bonds at low temperature which remain solid at much higher temperatures. The exploitation of this principally known technique for new high temperature processing steps and applications in electronic assemblies is the aim of this study. Three basically different variants of this bonding process are given. A comprehensive metallurgical screening is performed and the feasibility of binary material systems is given on a quantitative scale. Very attractive systems are spotted that have never been studied before. Detailed examples for the realization of bonding with complex ternary and multilayer systems are given. A highly innovative example is the chip stack or wafer to wafer bonding of unmetallized Si or SiC at 250°C. The proposed bond remains stable above the melting point of Si and enables entirely new semiconductor manufacturing steps. An improved die bonding process was proposed and verified experimentally.1. IntroductionIsothermal solidification can be applied to form strong bonds at relatively low temperature which remain solid at higher temperatures. The general principle of this type of joining processes is illustrated in Fig. 1. An interlayer of a low melting component, Lo, is provided as a foil or a thin film coating between the high melting joint components, Hi. The assembly is heated under moderate pressure to the bonding temperature, T 8 , and a liquid filler forms, either because the melting point of Lo is exceeded or due to a eutectic reaction between Lo and Hi. This molten filler initiates a rapid interdiffusion or reaction diffusion between Lo and Hi and the subsequent approach to an equilibrium state results in isothermal solidification. The solid phases formed at T 8 in the joint region exhibit a remelt temperature above T8 •"

More than ever before, mining projects are besieged from growing regulatory, political, public, and special interest group pressure. Administrative and legal appeals to permits and environmental documents can delay project start-up and add tremendous cost to mineral development. Some mining projects have been canceled given undue external constraints. Successful managers must learn to cope with these constraints. This paper will discuss controversy and present a number of environmental management tips to minimize the potentials for delay and to lessen the impacts from government and anti-mining pressures.

The Horn Island gold and mineral field produced 194 kilograms of gold in the 4 years subsequent to its discovery in 1894, from an area of shallow workings 1.5 kilometres x 0.5 kilometres. Gold deposits in the adjacent Prince of Wales, Hammond and Possession Islands also drew attention at that time.These islands form part of a Carboniferous sequence of ignimbrites (Torres Strait Volcanics) intruded by the Badu Granite and minor volcanics within the Cape York-Oriomo Ridge. Gold is associated with the epithermal stages of igneous activity. Recent exploration has defined sub-horizontal zones of disseminated gold mineralisation in the sub-surface, as well as reserves in the outcropping sub-vertical structures mined in the past. Released estimates of 170,00 tonnes proven ore and 550,000 probable ore at 4 grams per tonne gold, have been established.Gold is mostly contained in quartz vein stockworks and hydrothermal breccias within the intensely propylitised medium grained granites which form the local host rocks within the coarse grained Badu Granite. Associated vein minerals are sulphides (primarily of lead, zinc and iron) and calcite. Various intrusions of porphyry, aplite and granodiorite occur through the prospect area.

This paper describes the microbiology basics underlying heap and tank biooxidation of metal sulfide ores and concentrates. The primary organisms are identified and described along with the reactions they catalyze and their growth requirements. Also described is the interaction between ore leaching bacteria and the leaching environment in terms of solution chemistry, temperature, and mineral precipitation. Specific factors and agents that stimulate or inhibit growth and activity of ore bioleaching will be identified. Some of these factors are organism-specific and others are generic for microorganisms that grow under acidic conditions. Current knowledge of the limits of bioleaching in terms of dissolved ions in leach solutions, pH, and temperature will be summarized.

"INTRODUCTION When tannin is present in a boiler water, it causes certain difficulties in many analytical testing procedures because of its colloidal action in interfering with the removal of suspended matter by filtration and also because of the color it imparts to the boiler water.For example, in any test for phosphate in boiler water the first step is to filter out of the sample all sludge and suspended solids. Calcium phosphate in the sludge would give high results if not completely removed. If tannin is present in the sample, the sludge and suspended matter tend to pass through the filter paper so that it is difficult to remove it all. It may even be that tannin makes some of the suspended material in the sample completely nonfilterable. If this is true, it would be necessary to destroy or remove the tannin from the sample before filtering to get complete removal of calcium phosphate from the sample. In addition, if the test used is a colorimetric one, the tannin causes interference by its own color.As the calorimetric phosphate test is so convenient for control purposes and the use of tannin for boiler water treatment has become common, it has become necessary to develop suitable methods for employing the colorimetric phosphate test for boiler waters containing tannin. In this paper three different methods for doing this arc described and studied."

Unlike most previous Howe lecturers, I had not the good fortune to be associated with Henry Marion Howe, nor to be directly one of his students. Yet, through his writings, he has been my teacher, as he has of all American metallurgists. Instructive as his writings are—I use the present tense because Howe thought so keenly and reasoned so surely, seeing clearly, as if by intuition, what was hazy to lesser minds, that his writings are still vital—it is not those books and papers, nor even the minds he trained in his classes, that were his most outstanding service. It was the spirit of Howe in his approach to the problems of metallurgy, his broad-mindedness and fairness, his recognition of the need for theories and hypotheses to explain metallurgical phenomena, his willingness to use them as servants, as well as his questioning attitude—his refusal to accept them as masters—that comprise his greatest service. This most thoroughly warrants the honor the Institute pays each year to his memory. These traits I so respect and honor in any man that I glory in this opportunity to do reverence to him in whom they were so notably united. Howe's Discussion of a Creep Problem I have often wished that Howe were still with us to turn his keen insight upon the problems of the use of metals at high temperatures, a field much studied but still very hazy. Indeed, 53 years ago, in a paper1 before this Institute, Howe stated a problem closely allied to some that still perplex metallurgists and engineers dealing with the high-temperature field. Howe was intrigued by a report2 from another old master, Robert Henry Thurston, on the behavior of annealed vs. cold-drawn iron wire, and in order to broaden the foundation for metallurgical generalization, Howe made experiments of his own on copper and silver. he Broken Aro coal mine is located at the Woodbury Wildlife Preserve 11 km (7 miles) west of Coshocton, OH on State Route 541. Underground min¬ing at the 16-hm2 (40-acre) site took place during the 1910s. During the past five years, surface mining has occurred along the western and northern perimeters of the underground region. The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR), R&F Coal and American Electric Power (AEP) are involved in a project to remine the abandoned underground complex. The program also includes installing a mine seal made of fixated flue gas desulfurization (FGD) material. Previous mining activity in this area has resulted in an acid mine drainage (AMD) problem on portions of the reserve. In particular, a prominent AMD source is present in the Simmons Run drainage. The project goal is to eliminate or reduce the AMD that is discharging into the watershed. It was initially hoped that the Simmons Run drainage area could be economically mined. Accordingly, this area was included in the mine permit. However, experience with other previously mined areas on this reserve showed that the old mine workings were more extensive than originally thought. Old mine workings present several problems. The most significant are reduced coal recovery, poor coal quality and AMD liability. All of these problems increase mining costs. And the more extensive the old workings, the more significant the increase in cost. Based on R&F's experience with old mine workings in this area, it was decided that economic recovery of the Simmons Run drainage reserve was not possible. As a result, R&F excluded the Simmons Run drainage area from its early mine plans. Some time after it was decided not to affect the Simmons Run drainage area, R&F and ODNR's Division of Mining and Reclamation discussed the possibility of removing this area from the permit and attempting to correct the AMD problem as an Abandoned Mine Lands (AML) project. Specifically, the discussion centered around mining through a portion of the old mine workings to expose the mine openings in the highwall. Once exposed, the mine openings would be sealed using FGD material from the nearby Conesville power plant operated by AEP. In addition, there was interest in reclaiming the old tipple and associated gob pile located adjacent to Coshocton County Road 17 on the opposite side of Simmons Run. R&F attempted to eliminate the AMD problem by sealing the mine openings with FGD material. Once the seals were installed, they were covered with overburden. Monitoring wells were installed to determine the effectiveness of the seal and the inundation progress in the old mine workings as well as monitoring the quality of ground water. The project was jointly funded by revenue from the sale of the coal recovered during the project and AML funds. The FGD seal is expected to cause well water levels to increase above preseal elevations. However, the additional head pressure due to increased water depths in the underground mine may cause seepage through the bottom of the mine or out through the perimeter. The in¬creased water depth in the underground mine is expected to cause lower oxygen concentrations in the underground mine water. Since acidity is produced by oxidation of iron pyrites, less oxygen should result in better quality water. Monitoring wells will be installed before seal installation so that pre- and postseal water levels and well water quality can be determined. Surface sampling locations will be identified. These will be monitored before and after seal placement.

The sign of the surface charge of selected potassium soluble salt minerals namely KClO4 , K2SO4 , KNO3, and KCl was determined from nonequilibrium electrophoresis measurements and found to be negative for each of the salt. Dodecylamine flotation of these salts revealed that the concentration of amine required for flotation increases in the order KClO4< K2SO4< KNO3<KCl. Precipitationof the amine collector colloid was not required for flotation of the oxyanion salts and in this case it appears that adsorption of the dodecylamine cation is sufficient to create the hydrophobic surface state. The order for flotation is explained in terms of surface hydration of these respective potassium salts based on contact angle measurements and FT Raman spectroscopic characterization of water structure.
