Technical innovation in electrical and electronic equipment with new functions and design, stimulate consumer?s purchasing desire towards the latest equipments and this leads the rapid increase in the production of increased amount of waste materials Treason et al (2006) have reviewed the data on electronic waste generation in different parts of the world. Studies by Bertram et al (2002) have also affirmed that waste electrical and electronic components are the fastest growing waste category; this emphasizes the need for efficient recycling strategies. Recycling of electronic waste is an important subject not only from the point of waste treatment but also from the recovery aspect of valuable materials. However, recycling of electronic scrap is still quite limited due to the heterogeneity of the materials present in the products (Veit et al. 2005). A bioleaching based process offers a number of advantages compared to the conventional pyro or hydrometallurgical methods (Lee et al. 2007; Lee and Pandey, 2012). The advantages include simple, inexpensive (in some cases) and eco-friendly approach besides, generation of less active leach residue then other metallurgical processes. Though, biohydrometallurgical process has been successfully applied for the leaching of metals from ores (Olson et al. 2003; Rawling 2000), data pertaining to its application for the extraction of electronic scrap is still scanty. Recently, a few studies have been undertaken for extraction of metals from electronic scrap/printed circuit boards (Brandl et al. 2001; Faramarzi et al. 2004; Choi et al. 2004, Ilyas et al. 2007; Ilyas et al. 2010). These studies were conducted with mesophilic chemolithotrophic (Acidithiobacillus ferooxidans and Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans) or cyanogenic bacteria (Chromobacterium violaceum) or moderate thermophilic bacteria (Sulfobacillus thermosulfidooxidans). However, compared to bacterial leaching, fungal leaching has the following advantages: (i) ability to grow under higher pH, and thus is more suitable in bioleaching of alkaline solid waste (ii) a generally faster leaching process with shorter lag phase (iii) Chelation of excreted metabolites (e.g. organic acids) with metal ion, thus reduce its toxicity to the biomass (Burgstaller et al. 1993; Aung and Ting 2005). The last few years have shown a significant increase in the demands for fine products, which means everything under 10µm. There are more and more applications requesting extremely fine ground powders leading to the development of several milling machines which are better adapted to the new products. Cost saving machinery is important for the worldwide competition. Especially the energy consumption is extremely important for any fine ground product. A worthwhile field for mechanical engineering companies is the dry milling machinery as there are not as many solutions available compared with wet milling applications. In many cases wet mil-ling is the only solution to reach the requested quality, but there are also a lot of applications which can be performed in a dry way on the premise that the right mill and classifier are available. Dry milling permits to save energy and allows to influence the particle size distribution more easily, as a classifier can be used in that case. This will significantly reduce production costs and can enable the production of new products with better properties. The Tower Mill is well-known already in the field of wet grinding. Recent research work and end user reports have shown clearly that this mill has a lot of advantages compared to a ball mill. Up to now this advantage is limited to wet grinding as only few mills have been used for dry grinding. There is no doubt about the efficiency of dry grinding, but new and improved feeding and discharg-ing systems have to be developed in order to enable the full range of its advantages. Especially the high production capacities are a challenge for mill and classifier designers. The Tower Mill with its special grinding mechanism allows to cope with very high feed rates, because machines with more than 1 MW are available. Improved grinding efficiency will decrease the circulation load through the classifier and also lead to smaller classifier sizes. Together with im-proved mills the classifier can work more efficiently because the feed material is finer. Results of a test center plant production will be shown together with a comparison between stan-dard machinery and the MaxxMill®. Preferential applications for each mill will be explained.

Without an exclusive definition of administration in business, we could propose to define it as performance by management to adopt or implement established business formulas. Administration could also be defined as a universal process that organizes people, and achieves, through efficiency, common objectives and goals. Humanity developed some form of this process from the beginning of civilization. To imply that something is new in administration might be considered specious or naïve. Moreover, what is new in management? Administration of business is not new to the world. To prove this statement, we need only ask this question: Does the architecture and monumental workmanship of the past civilizations of ancient Egypt, Rome, and the Incas demonstrate management without administration and without definition of objectives? The answer must be a resounding ?NO!? In spite of this acknowledgment and for the purposes of this presentation, I will use the word ?new? in business and hope that the reader will follow my reasoning. The mining industry has unique characteristics in respect to other industries. It is multi-disciplinary, has a single purpose (majority for one metal), has two players (man and nature), and it involves high risks for generating environmental imbalance. Mining exploits non-renewable and finite resources, creates an unstable job market (work hard to have no work) and a speculative economic market with unpredictable prices ? a one-time payment for a finite resource with multiple recycling. On top of all that, the industry still operates within obsolete petroleum-based technology, utilizing practices that were designed two centuries ago. Today, we confront the challenges of the millennium with outmoded practices and management. Ordinarily, several styles of administration are standardized into a FRAGMENTED vertical system of organization. Mining has rigid objectives in production, with profitability as the focus from the beginning to the end. Citing the concept of safety, as an important facet of production is bombastic since, in truth, mining is an experimental industry that consistently reports high numbers of fatal accidents. In mining, we designed a process to work according to our objectives, demanding attention and supervision of all levels of management with a halo of parameters that are not assimilated into the design. We continue to perform a rigid style of management in an industry that is still not responsive to variations of the market ? losses in particular. The existing design process generates loss without capitalization and without response to said loss. This perception is reflected in a mindset that is only too ready to ignore mining liabilities. The reality of the enterprise has created an immense pressure from top to bottom in the hierarchy to do more with less. It is for all of these reasons that I propose to set forth a new essence for administration that encompasses an alternative vision and style in mining: Management by Loss. MANAGEMENT BY LOSS Management by Loss (MBL) is a systematic, integral process organized to quality control operation and the human profitability within the industry. It permits focus on achievable goals by utilizing the best practices (Mining Open-closing). Identification and characterization of loss in the process determine how objectives are defined, controlling the time limits to execute based on constant balance of mass, energy, water, and ?wastes? in each stage of the industry, in order to reach final objectives. The concept of loss can be defined by various criteria. Generally, it is the mass that could not make or arrive at its destination from a designed process or simply, it could not maintain balance. Otherwise, the design of the process describes the final point of the resource. However, those resources could not make their destination because of failure to use the best design, resources and TIME. The loss has typical characteristics such as Identifiable, classifiable, measurable, manageable, controllable, valuables, negotiable, avoidable, reportable, and monitoring. In the traditional scheme, these losses are not registered; they are made exclusions. We are trapped within a system, which was designed to obtain objectives of the industry in a specific timeframe. In the present style of administration, the focus is total - our emphasis in this treatise is in the loss. The current traditional report form contains only the most positive achievement of objectives, only the best of the exercise, humanizing numbers, without touching what we left behind or what we were waiting for to assimilate as a ?surprise account?(new account of liabilities). Management by loss is a method that redefines the concept of waste (waste zero) for controlling the mine operation under the equilibrium of the ecosystems. This method confronts the problems that impact our industry in this millennium. Understanding and quantifying losses (reserves, resources, time, energy, water, soil, materials, equipment, tasks, labor, ecosystems, etc) is a priority mandate for the industry and demands the application of a ?new ? style of administration by seeking to maintain balance instead of the disequilibrium that mining now creates in nature. It is necessary to answer questions such as: How can we minimize loss? How can the loss be assimilated during the life of the mine? What is the vision of mining in respect to the generation of waste? How can we convert liabilities into assets? In addition, the control of loss is determined in the achievement of the plan. Loss occurs because of a failure of the process in the original plan. Still we do not plan to fail but we fail to plan appropriately. It is a remarkable thing to accomplish and compel those objectives described in the original plan when that plan is designed with a determined budget. If not, we lose time and, of course, capital. Moreover, in Management by Loss (MBL), we can find answers to the following questions: What is the multiplier of productivity in mining? What are the influences of identification and characterization of loss and what is the level of efficiency of energy in order to achieve waste zero (effective cut off grade)? The challenges of mining in this millennium validate this new style of administration. Finally, it is important to point out that mining is entering into an era that has different rules, but the industry is still run by companies functioning with objectives from two centuries ago. They are trying to confront issues with concepts that are not designed for new tasks. Therefore, I ask you to consider this new style of administration of business under a vision of how the industry should be organized and managed, with an attitude of balance toward nature and social responsibility.

Large open pit mines in desert climates, such as the Phelps Dodge Morenci copper mine in Arizona, can create groundwater cones-of-depression of considerable size and stability. The hydraulic containment provided by the groundwater depression prevents migration of process solutions into the surrounding regional aquifer. Copper leach operations that fall within the groundwater depression may not require costly lining if passive containment can be demonstrated. An approach is presented in this paper that was successfully used to demonstrate passive containment. The approach includes a combination of groundwater modeling and a water balance analysis of leaching operations failing within or immediately near the open pit.

Full-face tunnelling machines were introduced into German coal mines 12 years ago. It was aimed to utilize these highly efficient systems to drive mine tunnels in rock so that the large demand for development work in some mines could be met. A characteristic feature of coal deposits in Germany - and particularly in the Ruhr Area - is a thick overburden strata. Access is therefore only possible through vertical shafts. A network of horizontal drivages leading from these shafts open the deposits between the different mine levels. The hardcoal-bearing formations are multi-folded and heavily tectonically stressed. Apart from a few extensive fault zones there are many single faults of different natures in the carboniferous strata. During the course of decades coal mining has penetrated to ever increasing depths. Nowadays coal is mined from depths of between 600 m and 1,200 m. The effects of ground pressure in connection with extremely varying rock strengths and high temperatures are particular difficulties which have to be overcome during drivage work. The first full-face tunnelling machines to be applied in the mines had originally bee deigned and developed for tunnelling projects. Not only the machines themselves, but also the back-up equipment had to be adapted to meet the special demands of German coal mines.

In Taiwan, around 8,000 tons of batteries are consumed per year but only 17% of which were collected and transported to oversea for recovery. The dumping used batteries have become a potential environment problem. How to increase the collection efficiency of used batteries is an important issue for EPA in Taiwan. Besides, some treatment plants are on process to get permission for recovering used batteries. The objective of this study is to estimate the recycling cost of spent consumer battery and explore the feasibility of recovering used consumer batteries in Taiwan based upon the principle of cost-efficiency. The recycling cost including collection cost and recovery is estimated based on a survey. Results would provide some suggestions to Taiwan EPA regarding feasibility of recovering used batteries in Taiwan.

"Screw press technology is an innovative approach to tackling the growing pressure to conserve water and minimise the environmental impact of mineral tailings disposal. The principles of the technology have been known for a considerable period of time in non-mining applications such as water treatment, wastewater (municipal sludge), as well as in the paper and chemical industries for dewatering solids, particularly those containing clays.The screw press represents a viable niche technology for filtering fine and high-clay tailings, without the prior thickening stage, and is capable of producing a filtered product that is sufficiently consolidated and dry enough to provide a product suitable for conveying and dry stacking.The Ishigaki screw press was introduced in 1990 and key features are: continuous operation and excellent availability low wear to plant acceptable flocculant consumption low carbon footprint and low noise levels fully automatic.These features lead to simpler plant layouts, easier maintenance, smaller spares inventories, reduced wear, smaller footprint and overall lower capital and operating costs.The amenability of a particular tailing stream to treatment by screw press technology may be determined by test work. Two pilot plant studies are described where this technology has been applied in the mineral industry being flotation tailings from a rare earth (RE) mineral concentrator and coal tailings. To provide a means for accurately and reliably warning of impending roof falls or rock bursts and for evaluating support systems. The Approach: Development of a device for measuring rockbolt loads which is not affected by harsh environments nor by eccentric loading conditions and is easily adapted to various size rock bolts. How It Works: The Rock-Bolt Tension Load Cell, developed by the Bureau's Spokane (Wash.) Mining Research Center, is installed on a bolt and sandwiched between a conventional doughnut washer bearing plate and a torqueing nut (Fig. 1). As the bolt takes load, the bearing plate transmits the load axially to the cell through a ball and socket arrangement, compensating for uneven bearing surfaces. The cell body strains in proportion to the applied load: the strain is sensed by welded strain gages as change in electrical resistance. The resistance change is read through a Wheatstone Bridge and, through calibration, the applied load is determined.

The patterns of variation of the 21 anisotropic elastic constants with direction arc presented for all of the symmetry systems that are normally expected to occur in rocks and in the constituent minerals. The exception, which is not discussed, is the triclinic system for which no elastic constants are available. Variations are shown for rotations about the principal axes by means of polar graphs. These include graphs for all of the n-fold symmetry axes possible for elastic symmetry and thus make it possible to visualize variational patterns for rotations about any n-fold axis. Variations throughout space are shown by means of equal area projections for the only constants (those relating axial stress to axial strain) that are uniquely defined by a single closed surface. For those unfamiliar with the compliance (Sij) and stiffness (cij) coefficients, the variations that can be shown by Young's modulus (E), Poisson's ratio (v), and shear modulus (G) are also given.

Diatomaceous or infusorial earth, also called diatomite; fossil meal, or kieselguhr, is derived from the lowest form of vegetable life, the unicellular alga:. It consists of the siliceous remains of extremely minute aquatic plants, which exist in both salt and fresh water. Light i~ a prerequisite to their development. These very small particles secrete silica in much the same way that molluscs secrete lime to form their shells. The diatoms at death sink to the bottom of the body of water in which they lived, and the organic matter gradually decays and is washed away, leaving the skeletons. Thousands of years are required by this means to develop bed5 of sufficient thickness to be of commercial value. The siliceous remains vary in size according to the species, but all are very minute and, as a general rule, they can be identified only under a high-power microscope. Over one thousand types have been distinguished and named. They are all composed of a hydrous or opalescent form of silica, with silica content ranging from seventy to ninety-five per cent. Magnified, they present an attractive sight, a very fragile structure with many interstitial openings known as cells. Many of them consist of two parts, defined as valves, held together by means of a girdle. Certain species, belonging to the Pinnularia family appear as a long comb, in half longitudinal section. The spaces between the teeth are the cells. This particular genus is very common in Nova Scotian deposits.

High pressure acid leach (HPAL) and pressure oxidation (POx) or pressure leaching extraction processes occur in autoclave vessels operating at elevated temperature and pressure, acidic conditions with abrasive mineral slurries. The harsh process conditions require specialized severe service metal seated ball valves to support operation of the vessels. Over several decades thermally sprayed titanium dioxide (TiO2) and chrome oxide (Cr2O3) coatings have been applied to extend the service life of the ball valves and other high wear critical components. Variability in the coating application quality control and severe process conditions can result in spalling, coating failure and premature failure of the component resulting is decreased autoclave circuit availability. In 2012 MOGAS, together with BRENCO, initiated research and development for ML-381, metallurgically bonded coating. This paper includes the historical development of severe service ball valve coatings, success of the trials and increasing industry adoption of the ML-381 coating for ball valves and other critical autoclave circuit components.

The recent trend in underground mine developments is ?big is better?. This is most certainly evident in the mine shaft and the conveyances that operate within its compartments. Today, there are several new installations requiring mine cages that can transport up to 170 passengers. The technology in mine hoisting is advancing to address a combination of higher capacity requirements, deeper hoisting depths and faster winding rates, however, some areas of the hoist plant have not changed for the past fifty years. The most notable of these areas is the shaft compartment guide string and the conveyance mounted safety arrest mechanism. The technology in use today for the protection of passengers in a shaft conveyance from a hoist rope severance incident, remains conceptually unchanged from Elisha Otis? design of 1850. The actual retardation components, the safety dogs, have taken on several forms since Elisha?s invention with the last major design change occurring in the late 1940?s. The arrest of a free falling shaft conveyance requires that the shaft guides withstand the energy imparted on them by the safety dogs. There are some very real limitations presented by the use of wood for this application. The new hoisting era will most certainly continue to demand larger capacity equipment but also, an increased awareness toward safety.

"The interest in the use of sensor-based particle ore sorting has increased significantly with the recent advances in the sorting technologies and higher capacities per unit. This technology has the potential to provide great value in processing lower grade ores from the mine whilst delivering higher grades to the mill as well as in upgrading waste rock into ore. Typically, the focus is on the amenability of the ore to ore-sorting and associated reductions in the consumption of energy, water and consumables. However, layout has a significant impact on the installed cost of a concentrator and the layout impacts from fitting an ore-sorting circuit into the concentrator plan need to be carefully considered. This paper examines layout considerations that play an important role in ore sorting projects. These include additional crushing and screening requirement, transportation of the rejected material back to the waste stockpile (mine fleet requirements) and effects on concentrator footprints.INRODUCTION Ore sorting has been practiced throughout history with an early report by Agricola in 1556. Metallic and non-metallic minerals were extracted from rocks by laboriously breaking them with hammers and picks and hand-picking selected material with higher grade off a table. The concept has not changed but the sorting technology has evolved significantly over the last 20 years. Ore sorting is usually a dry process in which a portion of the material is rejected based on mineral properties and/or grade. The methods used for sensing ore particles cover a large range of physical properties. A variety of sensors are available that differ on the discrimination technique that is used, which include: photometry, radiometry, conductivity, magnetism, microwave, X-ray transparency: X-ray transparency and luminescence and UV fluorescence (Sivamohan and Forssberg, 1991; Wotruba, 2006). There are two main ore sorting techniques: particle ore sorting and bulk ore sorting. According to Nadolski et al (2018), the potential for sorting is determined though analysis of grade heterogeneity within the orebody (greater heterogeneity represents more opportunity to add value to a project) at the scale of the intended sorting unit size."

The flotation behavior of two high sulfur coals using a non-ionic surfactant as collector from two series of compounds containing oxygenated functional groups was studied in detail using a 2-liter Denver flotation cell. The performance of these reagents was compared with that of an oily collector, namely dodecane. The results showed that at the same coal recovery, a much lower dosage of these non-ionic surfactants was required as compared with that of dodecane. More import was the performance of these compounds as promoters for oxidized as well as un oxidized coal. Mechanisms of interaction of these compounds with the coal are suggested.

Many remnants of gold exploitation in the Middle Ages were found in the Lower Silesia region. The oldest evidence of such activity was found in the neighborhood of Zloty Stok and comes from the 7th century. Mining of precious and non-precious metal ores has a great relevance in the late Middle Ages when advanced metallurgic technologies were mastered, that allowed to obtain gold, silver, lead, copper, zinc and arsenic from complex ores occurring in the oldest middle part of Sudetes. Historically it concerned the area of the Swidnica Principality and Klodzko County. Experience obtained in Freiberg, which is located close to the Lower Silesia, was used in the development of mining. A high level of mining and metallurgic technology was obtained in the 15th century that caused significant increase of production of the metals mentioned above. Unfortunately, the good time of Lower Silesian mining lasted only up to the 18th century; the notion of preservation of cultural heritage was unknown at that time. The Lower Silesian medieval mines were not in such a fortunate situation as the ?Wieliczka? and ?Bochnia? mines, which are operating to present-day, and which made preservation of the most interesting headings and objects possible. All these objects are now available for visitors. However, in the case of the middle Sudetes it seems that it is often sufficient to localize old shafts and headings on the basis of careful observations and old maps and carry out some earthwork to uncover medieval headings and objects of underground mining activity. They are often preserved in amazingly good state; this also pertains to mining devices. Another issue is of course the permanent preservation of that heritage and its possible availability for re-searchers and tourists. Some success has been achieved in that field (Zloty Stok Gold Mine is a good example), but also problems were encountered in many cases. The Lower Silesian Coal Basin, which has not been exploited for 10 years is an evidence that there is not a holistic conception of mining heritage renovation. Many attractive mining objects disappeared irrecoverably from the mountainous landscape of the Middle Sudetes despite common consciousness of their significance for cultural development of Silesia and other regions.

Carbonaceous matter (c-matter) in sulphide ores can adversely affect the process of gold recovery during cyanidation due to its ability to adsorb, or preg-rob, gold from a cyanide leach solution. This paper describes a standardized procedure for characterization of c-matter in an ore sample providing detailed information on its composition, maturity and preg-robbing capacity. The procedure utilizes the following complementary analytical techniques in conjunction with several chemical tests and assays: SEM/EDX Raman spectroscopy and TOF-SIMS. Results of the test can be used as a predictive tool to estimate the impact the c-matter will have on the gold recovery process. A comparison between predicted preg-robbing behaviour and cyanidation test results are presented.

The Berkeley Pit of The Anaconda Company is located on the southeast slope of the Butte Hill, the legendary "Richest Hill on Earth," and is one of the largest pit operations in the world completely dependent on truck haulage. Through October 31, 1968, the Berkeley stripping and mining operations have moved more than 442,589,000 tons of material. Present scheduled production is at the rate of 260,000 tons per day, with a record quantity of 306,900 tons having been hauled on September 23, 1968. Although the Berkeley Pit has been in production only a little more than ten years, it has been the proving ground for many of the presently used large trucks. Beginning with the original R. G. LeTourneau 75-ton electric truck in 1960, Unit Rig 85- and 100-ton electric drives, Haulpak 65- and 105-ton electric drives, and Caterpillar 100-ton electric drives have all been tested under production conditions. In addition, engine development has kept pace with both 1000-hp diesel and 1100-hp gas turbine engines now under test. As the size of the Berkeley operation has grown, the truck fleet has changed in size and appearance in order to maintain economic mining costs. The original fleet consisted of forty-three 36-ton trucks with conventional mechanical drives. The present fleet is made up of eighty-nine trucks: nineteen 85-ton Unit Rig electrics with 700-hp diesel engines; sixty-nine 100-ton Unit Rig electrics with either 700- or 1000-hp diesel engines; and one 100-ton Unit Rig electric with an 1100-hp gas turbine engine.

"Aluminum is an important alloying addition to the zinc used in the hot-dip galvanization of sheet steel to control the properties and appearance of the resulting coating. Optimization of the galvanization process requires control of the alloy concentration which can be improved through the use of chemical sensors. Aluminum sensors based on molten electrolytes are commercially available but are not widely used because of their high cost. One approach to reducing the cost is to use a solid electrolyte which can simplify the sensor design and thus reduce the cost of fabrication. In this paper, the development of an aluminum sensor based on a solid fluoride electrolyte, specifically magnesium fluoride, will be described.IntroductionThe concentration of the zinc bath used in hot-dip galvanization affects the galvanization process as well as the properties of the resulting coating. Thus, accurate in situ measurement of the alloy composition can be used to improve process control. This paper describes a solid-electrolyte-based aluminum sensor for monitoring the bath composition during hot-dip galvanization."

The long-awaited COSMAR study prepared under the auspices of the National Academy of Science reaches one emphatic conclusion that has been enthusiastically seconded by the mining industry: The 1977 federal surface mining act is "poorly suited" as a vehicle to regulate noncoal mining. Though the industry greeted the report with approval, the weight it will carry and the extent of its impact are yet to be felt. The COSMAR report makes no recommendations-that's a job left to the Administration's Council on Environmental Quality-and the prospect of legislation still hovers. For a closer look at the study, MINING ENGINEERING talked to COSMAR committee chairman James Boyd, a well-known presence in the mining arena for over 50 years. After highlighting some of the study's major points, Dr. Boyd comments on the report's impact and possible repercussions. Dr. Boyd, for those readers who haven't seen the COSMAR report, would you summarize some of its major findings? The committee analyzed the surface mining act to determine if it was applicable to noncoal mining and found that there were provisions of the act that either could not be met by existing technology or would be extremely difficult and not necessarily beneficial to adapt. We found that most noncoal mineral mines, despite their obvious diversity, can be considered in two major groups: 93% of all mines move 45% of all materials mined (mostly small units mining construction materials); and the few gigantic regional operations (2%)-copper, iron, phosphate, and uranium mines-that move 50% of the material. With few exceptions, neither of the two groups is amenable to the coal mining practices addressed by the act. The strip mine law was designed for coal mining, where land is regraded, revegetated, and returned to usefulness. In contrast, construction mineral quarries supply local needs for decades, remove most of the material from the immediate vicinity, and cannot be returned to their premining uses (though they have innumerable other valuable uses). The nation's huge mineral deposits require enormous capital investments, are vital to the nation's economy, and can take centuries to exploit. Any attempt to return these locations to premining use would be illogical. Pebble phosphate in Florida and red-bed copper in Oklahoma come near to meeting the conditions contemplated in the act.
