Division Ministro Hales - Codelco (DMH) is located at 2600 meters above sea level, 10 km north of the city of Calama, Antofagasta region, Chile. In operation since 2010, it corresponds to a porphyry copper deposit that is exploited by the open pit mining method. The ore is mainly composed of sulfides, which is concentrated by comminution processes such as crushing, SAG milling and ball milling to liberate the mineral particles, and then separated from the waste (concentrate) in flotation stages, including a concentrate regrinding stage. Reports from the DMH processing plant area have identified a decrease in fine copper recovery, with the first hypothesis being the high percentage of ultrafine particles (% <45µm) in the flotation feed. Due to the above, DMH & Orica decided to carry out activities to identify the controllable variables that can impact the generation of low size particles in ore and adjust them to reduce the percentage of fine material generation, with special focus on the Drilling and Blasting processes. Based on the data provided by DMH, we evaluated what could be integrated to make an analysis. The different attributes associated with the ore and their effect on copper recovery were evaluated. In parallel, at the mine, a fragmentation measurement campaign was carried out at the loading faces and granulometric analysis of the drill cuttings. Once the correlations between the attributes and copper recovery were identified, hypotheses were established and reviewed with the Drilling & Blasting, Geotechnical, Geology and Process Plant areas. With the validations of the hypotheses and the results of the in-mine (cutting) measurements, we proceeded to review the criteria for the classification of Blastable Geotechnical Units and their associated D&B designs. Using software and the Crush Zone Model (CZM) tool, which considers rock and rock mass parameters, scenarios for various D&B design proposals were simulated with the objective of reducing the generation of ultrafine particles from the blasting process. Next steps include trial blasting with the D&B design recommendations, which will require follow-up to the flotation process to identify the impact on the reduction of ultrafine material from blasting.

A survey is made of changes in the technical status of a number of western world copper extraction and refining operations over the past 20 years. Specific developments in pyro- and hydro-metallurgy and refining practices are identified together with factors in the changing environment of the industry which has influenced their adoption. Nickel extraction and refining is similarly discussed.The replacement of traditional technology by more attractive alternatives has occurred in a considerable number of operations. The develop-ment and status of new continuous smelting processes, advances in hydrometallurgy and refining innovations which emerged during the 1960s and early 1970s is discussed. The varying experience in commercial acceptance of these new technologies is noted.Finally some possible future directions are canvassed for both operators and the research and development institutions.

"The Alberta and Northwest Chamber of Mines was founded in Edmonton, Alberta in 1935. The organization represented private sector mining explorers and developers in the province and north west Canada. The Chamber aided and abetted the establishment of the two territorial mining associations. Because of corporate human resource department creation by north of sixty mine operators, the Chamber refocused on Alberta and broadened its perspective to include activities beyond mining. In 1977 the name changed to the Alberta Chamber of resources. The slogan (in more modern terms vision, mandate, goal, etc) remains as Orderly Development of Canada's Resources.The sixty-three year reputation of the Chamber, built on volunteer rather than staff contribution, is the principal reason for any success. The key has truly been the reputation, not an image, as all activities have been solution oriented.This presentation provides insight into the structure and methodology applied by the organization, and reviews some of the successes and failures during the period 1985 to present. "INTRODUCTION The United States production of tin has always been negligible, and domestic requirements have been met almost entirely by imports. The advent of war in Europe in 1939 brought a threat to our foreign source of supply, and steps were taken by Congress to forestall shortages of tin and other metals. By authority of the Strategic Minerals Act, passed by Congress in 1939, the Bureau of Mines and Geological Survey conducted investigations of domestic tin deposits.An examination of Alaska deposits was undertaken in 1940 and 1941 by J. B. Mertie, Jr., and Robert R. Coats of the Geological Survey.H. B. Heide conducted a preliminary examination of lode and placer-tin deposits at Cape Mountain in 1942, which was followed in 1943 and 1944 by a program of exploration by churn drilling in the placer area and trenching and sampling the lode deposits.Placer tin, found at the head of Goodwin Gulch, Cape Creek, First Chance Creek, and Boulder Creek, indicates that the mineral was derived from the vicinity of lode cassiterite occurrences on Cape Mountain. Placer tin led to the discovery of at least one, cassiterite vein by the Geological Survey and the Bureau of Mines."

Great Salt Lake Minerals & Chemicals Corporation (GSL), a subsidiary of Gulf Resources & Chemical Corporation, is located on the east side of the Great Salt Lake, approximately 20 miles from Ogden, Utah. GSL processes brine from the north arm of the lake to produce potash, salt cake, salt and magnesium chloride brine. Potash fertilizer, in the form of K2SO4 is GSL&apos;s primary product. The GSL Sulfate of Potash Complex The GSL potash complex (depicted in Figure I) is divided into a solar evaporation pond system and the process plants. The solar,evaporation system consists of a 17,000-acre (68.8 Km2) ponding operation where the various salts deposit during the summer evaporation season, and a harvesting operation which recovers the deposits during the remainder of the year. The harvest is either preconcentrated in the flotation plant or processed directly in the chemical plant where sulfate of potash (SOP) is produced. The chemistry of the lake brine results in a solar deposit con¬taining primarily kainite (KCl-MgSO4.3H20), schoenite (K2SO4?MgSO4^ 6H2O), and halite (NaCI), with some carnallite (KCl.MgCl2.6H20) and epsomite (MgSO4.7H20). Other minor minerals may be deposited, depending upon the weather during the evaporation season. Each year, the solar deposit in the evaporation ponds will greatly depend upon the summer weather conditions, which have in the past proven to be quite unpredictable. Weather may alter both the quantity of the solar deposit and the composition of this deposit. Les autres ressources en minéraux industriels comprennent des gîtes déjà exploités de brucite, de chromite, de magnésite dolomitique et de feldspaths ainsi que des gîtes de magnésite, de barytine et d'apatite faisant présentement l'objet d'évaluation.

A great range of contacting equipment is used in solvent extraction. However, a tower filled with a regular packing offers many advantages in the direct extraction from slurries. A study was made of the flow of a dense slurry through a packed tower in which the continuous phase was kerosene. The grid type packing, which was preferentially wetted by the slurry, had slats inclined at an angle of 30¦, to the horizontal. On the sur- face of the slats there were uniformly spaced longitudinal indentat- ions. These were of a height slightly less than the film thickness and divided the slurry discharging from the bottom of the slats into a number of uniform streams. When slurry entered the tower it was distributed by means of a troughs and weirs type of distributor. Because of the relatively high slurry velocities that occur at the entry region, it was necess- ary to have the distributor and the first two grids above the solvent level. The interface at the bottom of the tower was located at the mid-point of the bottom grid, so that the slurry entered the interface as a continuous film across the full width of the slats. Using the above system, stable flow with low entrainment was achieved at slurry flow rates of 3.4 mis/cm/sec. This would be equivalent to a flow rate of 177 gallons per minute through a tower of cross-section 4 ft 4 in. by 4 ft 10 in., or 1200 tons per day of solids of specific gravity 2.6 when the pulp density was 65 per cent. Previous tests indicated that a total tower height of about 30 ft would be required for a recovery of better than 99 per cent.

To accommodate the fast growing need for services in Singapore’s Marina Bay downtown area, Marina South, the construction of a common services tunnel (CST) was required. The CST includes various services such as telecom cables, power lines and water pipes. A deep excavation and temporary earth retaining system (TERS) was required to facilitate the construction of the tunnels. Marina Bay is reclaimed land over thick soft marine clay which is likely to be still consolidating. The deep soft marine clay poses a big challenge for deep excavations in downtown areas where highways and sensitive structures are close by. This paper presents a case study of part of the CST Phase 1B and 2 at Marina South, in particular a 26 m deep excavation supported by a 46 m diameter temporary caisson. The construction started in late 2006 and the basic structure was completed in early 2011. The caisson was formed by 1.0 m thick overlapping diaphragm wall panels with a capping beam and three ring beams at different depths. Two-dimensional finite element analyses were conducted to predict the ground settlement, lateral displacement, bending moment and hoop stresses in the diaphragm wall and ring beams during different excavation stages. A comprehensive instrumentation and monitoring scheme was established to verify the design predictions, control excavation safety and trigger the contingency plan to protect public safety. The impact of construction activity, unbalanced temporary stockpiles and adjacent deep excavation for a mole removal will be discussed.CITATION:Zhang, H and Lawrence, A, 2014. Studies of sedimentary humic acids by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), stable isotopes, and elemental analysis show they are derived by oxidative degradation of complex plant macromolecules that are insoluble in aqueous or organic solvents. The mechanism by which humic acids originate is fundamental to our understanding of the role of organic matter in ore deposition, because these substances can complex and mobilize a number of metal ions. The organic matter associated with uranium ores of the San Juan Basin, New Mexico and Carlin-type disseminated gold deposits of Nevada has certain organic geochemical characteristics that suggest an origin from humic acids.

Structural steel final mechanical properties of strength and ductility are predominately generated by the final ferrite grain size/packet size and homogeneity of that ferrite grain size/packet size through the cross-sectional area. Forty to seventy percent of the strength components come from how fine the final cross-sectional ferrite grain size/packet size that can be produced.[1] All the ductility properties of structural steels for a given microstructure are predominately driven by how fine AND homogenous the final cross-sectional ferrite grain size/packet size can be refined.[2,3,4] One key ductility property of structural steels used in construction and energy transmission applications is fatigue. Both low and high cycle fatigue can be realized in these end applications, however, low cycle fatigue is typically the predominate mechanism. In construction applications the environment for fatigue is typically air, such as in wind towers or high-rise building construction. In energy applications, there is an interest in high pressure (5.5 – 21 MPa, 800-3000 psi) gaseous hydrogen as an alternative fuel source to fossil fuels. A project to study the effect of the cross-sectional grain size/homogeneity of a relatively pure polygonal ferrite microstructure on the fatigue performance in air and high-pressure gaseous hydrogen has been developed. This paper will discuss the project strategy, microstructure developed for the project and initial test results.

We are here today to witness the graduation of 63 young men as Engineers in the mineral industries . It is an important occasion and one in which the public takes a keen interest , since this school has long been famous for the educational facilities it affords young men, and for the high professional standing of its graduates . : : : It is fitting that once each year we should pause to review the path the student has traveled , and to reflect upon the perspective opening before him as an engineer . I was invited to come from Washington to take part in this ceremony and to say something to these young graduates . In searching for a theme ," it occurred to me. that perhaps my best contribution would be to duscuss certain beliefs as to college training , deal with the situation in which the young engineer finds himself on graduation , touch on the new ideas of the social and political responsibilities of the engineer , and point out what he may expect to find in practice , and , above all , what he must do to orient himself properly in the mining profession and maintain the best traditions of our brotherhood . Let us first review your college days and see what they have done for you . I am told there are still many temptations in college . I know there used to be . Rest assured the same holds true in the professional life ahead of you. The main difference is , perhaps , that your greatest temptations in college were those offered by your teachers , who tried to entice you into realms of harder work, closer application , increased concentration , clearer thinking and better understanding , by animating your curiosity and increasing your powers of reasoning and of observation . In other words , here you have carefully and systematically been decoyed toward finer and loftier things . Do not expect that similar helpful influences will greet you on every side in your professional life . Often quite the contrary is the case .

"The execution of classical building services in underground mining operations is more truth than myth. From small concrete foundations for conveyor belts to the construction of huge workshops for large machinery maintenance, nearly every operation requires building services. By creating such fixed facilities, these services ensure the efficiency of the production. A distinction must be made between fixed facilities which directly enable the production and auxiliary facilities which only indirectly support the production. The construction costs of such auxiliary facilities are often roughly estimated because they do not immediately contribute to mineral extraction. The research project ‘Development of a systematic cost-calculation method for building services in underground mines’ seeks to address the question: ‘Can the construction costs concerning fixed auxiliary facilities be neglected e.g. within a prefeasibility study?’ The presentation will show the monetary relevance and significance of these auxiliary facilities and introduce a guideline for cost estimators. PROBLEM DEFINITION The overriding interest of an underground mining operator is to exploit the commodity with the maximal quality by minimum cost and time expenditure. If a new operation shall be installed, it has to promise profitability. Therefore, predictive economic feasibility studies are performed in advance of installation. Herein, all cost expenditure for installation and operation of the future underground mine is determined and compared to the expected income by selling the raw material. The described interest of the mining operator is the starting point of the research project ‘Development of a systematic cost-calculation method for building services in underground mines’. While economic feasibility studies for future operations are focused on the profitable exploitation of raw materials and the efficiency of the accompanying necessary production processes, auxiliary actions are only considered rudimentary. Necessary production processes, as well as auxiliary actions regularly require classical building services, which are normally performed in construction business on the surface in the same manner. By performing building services like masonry or concrete works in underground mines, fixed facilities shall be set up in order to enable or support the raw material production. Production enabling fixed facilities are varying from small concrete foundations for conveyor belts or other infrastructural elements to upstream processing plants situated in the mine workings. While such fixed facilities are essential parts of the production process chain, supporting facilities underground shall increase the efficiency of the mining operation. Workshops, control rooms and social installations are only a few examples for supporting facilities. Those could be situated on the surface as well, but the efficiency increases significantly by installing them underground. Especially supporting facilities are evading from the main interest of the mine operator, since they are only indirectly connected to the production process. The building costs are oftentimes only roughly assumed."

The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (US EPA 319 program) provided funding to aid a public-private effort in the installation of an environmentally-friendly system to treat abandoned mine drainage at Jennings Environmental Education Center (Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources). Through this cooperative effort among state and federal agencies, mining, excavation, and environmental companies, college and home school students, Girl Scouts, and volunteers, a successful multi-component passive system, readily accessible for upgrades and public education/research activities, was built. 90 people were directly involved in construction of this award-winning system and about 1000 people annually benefit from the educational opportunities.

Since discovery of silver-gold lode deposits in 1864, the Butte district has produced more than $2.25 billion worth of copper, zinc, manganese, silver, and gold, an unprecedented value in the mining world. Exhaustion of the gold placer deposits along Silver Bow Creek, southwest of Butte, forced the early-day placer miners to turn their attention to the bold out- crops of the many veins exposed on the hillsides above the placer diggings. These outcrops bore silver and gold, and enough so that many lode claims were located. Such famous silver mines as the Alice, Moulton, Magna Carta, Nettie, and Blue Bird were developed. These and many smaller operations contributed to making Montana the leading silver-producing state in the 1880&apos;s. As depth was gained in the silver mines in certain parts of the district, occurrence of zinc minerals became troublesome. Zinc was not recoverable at the time, and in the chloridizing, roasting, and amalgamation of the ores, silver and gold recovery was greatly reduced. A period of active silver mining continued until 1892, when a decline in the price of silver brought the silver mining period to a close. Elsewhere in the district it was discovered that while some of the veins contained silver ores in the oxidized portions, the predominant minerals that were deeper were copper-bearing. Marcus Daly exposed rich copper ore on the 300 level of the Anaconda mine in 1891, and mining in the district disclosed that copper was destined to be developed in abundance. Early copper ore shipments were made to Swansea, Wales.

Introduction The Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act was passed in 1977 to put an end to the uneven environmental standards and enforcement established by various coal mining states in the US. One year after passage, the Secretary of Interior was directed to promulgate permanent program regulations implementing Title V provisions of the Act. These regulations were to form the basis for state regulatory programs under the Act and to allow states to assume primary regulatory responsibility. To implement the underground mining provision of the Act, the Secretary is directed in section 516(a) of the Act to promulgate rules. But they must take into consideration the differences between surface and underground coal mining. The regulations developed by the Secretary in 1979, with respect to subsidence control, included: • a subsidence control plan as part of the permitting process; • substantive provisions establishing performance standards for subsidence control; and • provisions providing for the prohibition of mining under perennial streams, impoundments larger than 24.6 dam3 (20 acre ft), and certain public facilities and urban areas. Industry challenged the Secretary&apos;s regulations implementing the subsidence control provisions. The litigation was consolidated with all other challenges to the permanent program regulations. (Permanent Surface Mining Regulation Litigation, Civil Action No. 79-1144; D. D.C., May 16, 1980.) In two opinions dealing with the multitude of issues raised by both industry and environmental groups, the US District Court of the District of Columbia ruled against industry. It upheld the promulgated subsidence control provisions. The US Court of Appeals stayed the appeals pending the agency&apos;s review and revision of its regulations. The regulatory reform was conducted in accordance with the order from the Secretary of Interior and the President in 1981. As a result, the subsidence control regulation was revised, reproposed, and finalized in June 1983 (Federal Register). This regulation, along with others, was again challenged by environmental groups and industry. On Oct. 1, 1984, the court, after finding the Secretary&apos;s reading of the Act reasonable, upheld the 1983 subsidence regulation except for one section. On Feb. 21, 1985, in accordance with the court&apos;s ruling, the Office of Surface Mining (OSM) suspended a portion of 30 CFR 817.121 (c)(2) concerning the damage correction requirement for structures or facilities and reproposed it on July 8, 1985 (Federal Register). In conjunction with a request for public comments, OSM now also seeks comments on the omission from the 1983 rule of the requirement in the 1979 rule regarding a presubsidence survey and monitoring of damage to structures. Technical issues related to subsidence regulations The subsidence regulations of June 1, 1983, consist mainly of two parts: a subsidence control plan as part of the permitting process; and substantive provisions establishing performance standards. DIE castings may be defined as metal castings made by forcing molten metal, under pressure, into a metallic mold or die. It is necessary to keep this definition in mind to avoid confusing this process with other permanent-mold casting processes. The fundamental principles of the process have been known and practised many years. The simplest application is embodied in the modern linotype machine in which molten metal (usually tin-lead alloy) is forced under pressure into a metallic mold. The pressure is derived from a piston and cylinder immersed in the molten metal. Progress in the art of die casting may conveniently be divided into threee groups: Machine for imparting pressure to the metal, material for the die or mold, casting alloys. CASTING MACHINES The problem of delivering molten metal under pressure into a die is comparatively simple, when dealing with low-fusing-point alloys, as the alloys of lead and tin, but it is much more complicated when dealing with metals of higher fusing points, such as the alloys of zinc, aluminum, and copper. Although the art of die casting is comparatively new and, to a large extent, unknown, the records of the patent office are replete with patents on the subject. Fig. 1 shows the Underwood machine patented in 1902; this is probably one of the first machines designed for the production of commercial die castings. The relation of this machine to the linotype casting machine is clearly. apparent. A cylinder and piston are immersed in the molten metal, the application of power to this piston forcing the molten metal, under pressure, into the mold or die. The Doehler machine, Fig. 2, patented in 1907, is based on the same general principles. This machine is used to a large extent at the present time, throughout the United States, for the production of zinc, tin, and lead alloy die castings.

T HE ore-dressing problem at Tul Mi Chung is complicated by the unusually complex nature of the ores. These come from replacement ore- bodies in limestone at the contact with a granite batholith, and contain copper, gold, silver, bismuth, molybdenum, iron, arsenic, zinc, and lead, the first two metals constituting the principal sources of profit. Iron is present as pyrite, magnetite, and hematite. Arsenic occurs both as mispickel and lollingite (FelAsa), the latter carrying a certain amount of finely divided gold. The gangue minerals are those typical of limestone con- tact-metamorphism and include a large percentage of garnet, together with diopside, serpentine, calcite, epidote, zoisite, actinolite, &apos;mica and other minerals. A part of the gold occurs in a free state; some is combined with chalcopyrite and lollingite, and a consider- able proportion is contained in the pyrite. Researches towards the improvement of recovery have been energetically conducted since 1915. Amalgamation, gravity concentrating tables, vanners, can- vas plants, etc., have all been tried and discarded in favor of flotation. It was very quickly established that fine grinding was essential for satisfactory recovery. This was and is still accomplished in Hardinge ball and pebble mills. A comparative test showed that when the ore was crushed to the point at which it contained 20 to 26 per cent. coarser than 100 mesh, the gold recovery was only 55.9 per cent., whereas when crushed so that only 11 to 15 per cent. was coarser than 100 mesh, the gold recovery was increased to 82.5 per cent. No particular difficulty was ever experienced in making a satisfactory recovery of copper but the losses in gold were considered serious and led to the investigation described in this paper.
