"The separation of nickel from the aluminum present in spent catalysts and different metallic industrial residues, is proposed in the following systems: alloy Al2Ni and the mixtures 50 wt% Ni + 50 wt% Al, 10 wt% Ni + 90 wt% Al2O3 and 12 wt% NiO + 88 wt% Al2O3. The experiments were carried out in a tubular reactor with a flow of 2 l/h of gaseous chlorine and from 200 ° to 800 °C. The final products of the reaction, extracted from the hottest zones of the reactor where characterized by XRD, SEM, EDS, AA and XRF, as NiCl2 y NiCl2.6H2O while in the coldest regions AlCl3 was deposited in the first two cases and in the other there was a residue of ?, a- Al2O3, sometimes mixed with some remainder of Ni and NiO. The procedure attained different separation factors which showed the optimun conditions for the recovery of both metals. Introduction Some studies of nickel corrosion were carried out in chlorine gas at temperatures above 950ºC, and suggested that nickel is not corroded below 538ºC. [1] However, in a previous work it was shown that the chlorination allows the separation of nickel from aluminum and the formation of NiCl2 was detected from 200ºC in binary mixtures Ni-Al 50 wt%, for isothermal conditions in chlorine flux. [2] Other researchers obtained selective chlorination above 650ºC of a fly ash containing 1.4 wt% of Ni and other metals (V, Mg, Al and Fe). The Ni was separated from the Mg and NiCl2 started to vaporize at 550ºC and was after condensed in a zone of the reactor above 380ºC with 90% of purity. [3]"

During the construction of a 1020 MW underground hydroelectric project in Bhutan a huge rock fall took place in the Downstream Surge Chamber (DSC) during March 2016. The total quantity of rock in the fall area is estimated to be about 1,50,000m3 (2.6 billion cubic feet), out of which about 25,000m3 (0.44 billion cubic feet) of muck was removed. The removal of muck was stopped apprehending that the cavity formed due to the rock fall may get further aggravated leading to widening and destabilising the adjacent transformer hall cavern or it might day light as the top cover was about 190m (623 feet). As the fall has virtually blocked the 314m (1030 feet) long cavern and divided it into two different chambers (south and north), and that the muck cannot be disturbed, it was decided to erect concrete wall on either side of the fall up to the cavern roof and then later address the filling of the cavity with appropriate fill material. As the access to the DSC was there for the southern side it was decided to extend a cable tunnel which was terminated at a distance on the north side of the cavern by D&B so that once it gets punctured into the north wall of the DSC it can be used to access the fall from this front too. This is a unique situation where in every blast approaching the DSC, the parting between them is diminishing and hence the tunnel blast will be exerting axial load on the parting wall leading to dynamic transient loading conditions and buckling may take place on the northern wall of DSC. This paper describes the various drill blast combinations adopted for successful excavation of this tunnel.

The effects of using surfactant solutions while diamond drilling in amygdaloidal basalt of the Upper Michigan copper mining district were investigated. Nonionic, anionic, and cationic surfactant solutions, all biodegradable, were tested with size AX surface-set bits mounted on a drill instrumented for continuous recording of thrust, rotational speed, and torque levels. Water flow and penetrations rates were also recorded. A drilling study was carried out, testing two rotational speed levels, two diamond bit grade levels, and four flushing agents (including water as a control). Comparison of all low-speed/high-thrust groups of tests shows that the non-ionic surfactant produced a 35% overall average increase in penetration rate over water, the anionic a 29% increase, and the cationic a 28% increase. These increases in, penetration rates resulted in a 22 to 26% reduction in cost over flushing with water alone. With the high-speed/low-thrust combination, the surfactants produced less benefits in penetration rate increases over water (14% increase for nonionic, 14% decrease for anionic, and 2% decrease for cationic type). Particle size analyses were run on drill cuttings produced by the three surfactant solutions and by water. All surfactant solutions showed a 20 to 50% increase in solids content over that of water alone. Since flushing rates were constant, these increases in solids content agree well with the penetration rate changes. The diamonds were recovered from each bit by matrix dissolution, and bit wear was measured in terms of total loss of weight. Flushing with surfactant solutions showed a savings in bit wear in most cases. The drill team noted also that surfactant flushing improved recovery of drill core by allowing easier removal of the core from the barrel.

In 1962, while investigating the tungsten potential in the Thompson Creek area for Union Carbide Corp., Henry T. Eyrich obtained anomalous concentrations of molybdenum (up to 19 ppm Mo) from stream sediment samples collected along Pat Hughes Creek, a tributary to Thompson Creek. Follow-up investigations by Eyrich during the same year disclosed the presence of a hydrothermally altered and molybdenite-bearing granitic exposure in the headwaters of Pat Hughes Creek about 2.4 km (1.5 miles) upstream from the sample point. The altered outcrop measured about 549 by 305 m (1800 by 1000 ft), contained abundant northwest-trending quartz veins locally with molybdenite, and was overlain and surrounded by the Challis volcanic extrusive sequence of mid-Tertiary age. Eyrich's subsequent soil and rock chip geochemical sampling program over the altered outcrop area showed a general increase in the molybdenum content to the northwest toward the postmineral Challis volcanic cover. Over a distance of about 305 m (1000 ft), values in the altered intrusive rock increased from less than 5 ppm Mo to over 600 ppm Mo, with aconcomitant intensity of the hydrothermal alteration pattern. Based on these geochemical results and on preliminar; megascopic hydrothermal alteration studies, Eyrich correctly concluded that the altered outcrop is an erosional window and that molybdenum mineralization of sufficient grade could exist beneath the Challis volcanic cover some distance further to the northwest. His recommendation to test the area of potential molybdenum mineralization with several drill holes was, however, declined by Union Carbide in 1962. The property remained unclaimed until 1967, when Eyrich joined Cyprus Mines Corp. Acting on Eyrich's recommendation, Cyprus immediately staked 26 lode mining claims to cover not only the altered intrusive outcrop, but also the northwest trend of mineralization where it projected beneath Challis volcanic rocks. Eleven of these claims are now patented.

IN recent years there has been an increase of interest in the flow of gases at relatively high pressures. Hydrodynamic calculation of the energy losses in the flow of gases in conduits, as well as through the porous solid materials constituting natural petroleum reservoirs, requires a knowledge of the viscosity of the fluid at the pressure and temperature involved. Although there are numerous publications concerning the absolute viscosity? of hydrocarbon gases at atmospheric pressure, there appears to be little information available relating to the effect of pressure upon the viscosity of these gases. Vogel28 determined the viscosity of methane at 32° F. and atmospheric pressure. His measurements at 32° F. were later substantiated by the measurements of Rankine and Smith17 at 63° and 212° F. Ishida12 also reported values for the viscosity of methane at atmospheric pressure. Trautz and Kurz26 measured the viscosity of propane at atmospheric pressure, from 83° to 530° F., by the use of a short capillary tube. Rap-penecker18 determined the viscosity of gaseous isopentane at elevated temperatures. Day' made an accurate investigation of the effect of pressure upon the viscosity of n-pentane and isopentane at pressures from 2 lb. per sq. in. ? to the vapor pressure at 77° F. (approximately 9.8 and 13.3 lb. per sq. in., respectively). Earhart5 reported data upon the viscosity of several natural gases measured by the long capillary-tube method. The viscosity of air, at atmospheric pressure and 73.4° F., was measured by Harrington7 by the rotating-cylinder method. Kellstrom13 has recently made an elaborate investigation of the viscosity of air at atmospheric pressure. The latter work is perhaps the most accurate investigation of the viscosity of a gas that has been made. .

The winning of zinc and lead ores from the comparatively shallow deposits of the Joplin district presents few such problems for the mining engineer as are encountered in deep ore mining and in the handling of complex ores. However, for those who are interested in the origin and nature of ore deposits in general, there is much here to investigate, and upon studies in this direction will depend, in no small measure, the future of an industry that has produced during the year 1916, in southwest Missouri, lead and zinc ores to the value of $26,319,383; adding $46,022,164 to the metallic wealth of the nation. Including the adjacent mines in Ottawa County, Oklahoma, and Cherokee County, Kansas, which are really continuations of the Joplin district, the total value of ores produced reached the sum of $34,089,503, and that of the metals, $58,927,941.l The ores produced in the Joplin district are remarkable on account of their almost uniformly high metal content in both lead and zinc. Their superiority in this regard is unparalleled, and is doubtless due to certain geological conditions that are now possibly explicable, provided that the artesian circulation = ascension hypothesis of the origin of the ore deposits is proved beyond question to be the only tenable explanation of the facts. These, as well as other valuable zinc-ore deposits, are bound to be exhausted in time, for ordinary mining purposes, and it concerns the mining engineer that the conditions under which ores of this character were actually deposited in the form in which they occur, may, if possible, be ascertained, in order that he may learn where to look for similar deposits in other regions, or even how to reproduce artificially such condi-

"Run-of-mine ore is reduced to 4 per cent on 4 mesh (3/ 16 inch), using four stages of dry crushing. The mill feed is then reduced to 2 per cent on 48 mesh and 60 per cent through 200 mesh, using one stage of ball milling in cyanide solution. During the subsequent treatment about one-tenth of the tonnage is removed as a table concentrate and ground to 77 per cent through 325 mesh. The size of the mill tailing is 66 per cent through 200 mesh.Four stages of ore reduction began when the dry crushing plant at No. 26 Shaft came into operation at a maximum rate of 440 tons an hour on July 31, 1941. A detailed description of the crushing plant was published in C .I .M. Trans., Vol. LVI, 1953.One-stage ball milling in cyanide solution came into full operation on January 11, 1938. The ball milling plant had a capacity of 4800 tons daily when reducing mill feed at 2. 7 per cent on 1/ 4 inch to 54. 3 per cent through 200 mesh. Primary grinding to 60 per cent through 200 mesh commenced May 22, 1945, when the feed was 3 per cent on 4 mesh. Under these conditions the capacity of the ball milling plant is estimated at 4300 tons daily. A description of the 11 Hollinger Crushing and Grinding Plant"" by D. C. Located on the island of Mindanao in the Southern Philippines, the Tampakan copper-gold deposit represents a major high-sulfidation epithermal deposit superimposed on an underlying porphyry copper system. With a recent JORC compliant indicated and inferred resource estimate of 1104 million tonnes at 0.65 per cent copper and 0.26 g/t gold at a 0.3 per cent copper cut-off grade, Tampakan represents the largest undeveloped copper-gold deposit in Southeast Asia. Since its acquisition by Indophil ResourcesÆ affiliate Sagittarius Mines Inc in August 2002, the deposit is the subject of an ongoing preliminary feasibility study into project viability that is initially focused on a higher-grade copper zone in the north-central part of the deposit. The deposit is hosted by a sequence of subaerial andesitic flows (Tampakan Andesite Sequence) related to a highly eroded andesitic stratavolcanic complex of Pliocene age. Detailed mapping and geochronological dating has identified four volcanic cycles or centres that have been sequentially developed and eroded. This stratovolcanic complex is interpreted to lie on the northern extension of the Sangihe volcanic arc that extends from Northern Sulawesi in Indonesia. The Tampakan district is located within a complex tectonic setting dominated by WNW trending wrench faults that form part of the trans-Mindanao Cotabato Fault Zone. The Tampakan deposit is located near the intersection of one of several WNW trending splay structures with a prominent NNE trending dilational structure, one of many that transect the host volcanic complex. High-sulfidation style copper-gold mineralisation at Tampakan is broadly associated with and central to a flat-lying tabular body of pervasive silica and silica-clay alteration developed within a district- scale lithocap of advanced-argillic and argillic hydrothermal alteration that extends over an area of 90 km2 within the volcanic complex.

"For the fourth time in five years, residents of northern Canada have seen a change in the tax treatment of housing and travel costs. The latest changes announced in December 1990 by the Minister of Finance are to become effective in 1991. When will the tinkering stop?IntroductionFor man y years prior to 1987, certain travel and housing allowances received by employees in remote areas were generally considered by Revenue Canada to be tax-free, even though some observers suspected that such generous treatment was contrary to the provisions of the tax legislation. In the mid-eighties, Revenue Canada decided to reconsider the tax treatment of the mining industry's long standing practice of providing housing and travel assistance to these employees. The tax- free treatment was continued by virtue of annual remission orders, but only pending the enactment of legislation which would tackle the issue head-on and layout the rules in black and white to be seen by all. To determine whether magnetite consumption could be reduced and salable coal production increased by using froth flotation units in series with magnetic separators, the Bureau of Mines conducted laboratory froth flotation tests on primary magnetic separator effluents obtained from three coal preparation plants. Tests were performed in a standard 500-gram-capacity laboratory batch flotation cell. Oleic acid and methylisobutyl carbinol were used as the collector and frother, respectively. Magnetite recovery was comparable to that expected from secondary magnetic separation, and salable float coal recoveries of 0,8 to 7.6 tons per hour were obtainable. The economics of the proposed technique appear to be sound.

"In the case of treating phosphatizing wastewater containing zinc, zinc had an impact on the solution chemistry, especially on pH. Fe2(SO4)3 and CaCl2 were used as precipitators to remove phosphate from zincic phosphatizing wastewater and the optimum pH was investigated. Zinc ion had a significant effect on the optimum pH. The optimum pH ranges were 12.10(inlet concentration of 15.67mg/L, outlet concentration of 9.53mg/L), 3.04-5.50(inlet concentration of 11.97mg/L, outlet concentration of 0.44-0.26mg/L), and more than 10.72(inlet concentration of 12.24mg/L, outlet concentration of less than 0.47mg/L) under the conditions without precipitator, with Fe2(SO4)3 and with CaCl2 respectively.Introduction Phosphate coating is commonly used for protective coating of machine elements. Including oil removal by caustic washing, rust removal by acid washing, phosphatization and inactivation, the phosphatization process produces wastewater containing inorganic salt of high concentration, especially the phosphate, beyond the environmental standards and polluting environment seriously. What’s more, the wastewater from zincic phosphatizing technology also contains another pollutant, zinc. At present, Chemical Precipitation (CP) and Biological Nutrient Removal (BNR) are two of most common technologies of phosphate removal. BNR, such as A/O, A2/O and UCT technology, is suited for wastewater containing organ phosphorus of low concentration and CP for wastewater with phosphate of high concentration [1]. Researches on CP treating wastewater containing phosphate of high concentration, mainly focus on adding quantity of precipitators[2-5] and coagulants[2-4] and the choice of technologies[3-9]."

The paper presents the limit equilibrium equations for the analysis of toppling blocks on a rock slope. The safety conditions are assessed by a numeric procedure implemented in an Excel worksheet. The UDEC numerical program was exploited to validate the procedure. A probabilistic model considering the spacing variability of the discontinuities was developed to define the most relevant parameters in this kind of problems. Five of the geologic horizons that yield oil in other parts of the world are represented in Brazil; namely, the Devonian, Carboniferous, Permian, Cretaceous, and Tertiary. Thus far, the first two have shown no evidences of being oil bearing within Brazilian territory. Not enough exploring has been done to permit trustworthy comparisons of the relative importance of the Permian, Cretaceous, and Tertiary as oil-bearing horizons in this country. The most important, indeed almost the only, information available relates to the locations of the areas and to the structural features of the several horizons. The theories regarding the physical conditions under which these rocks were laid down, however, I regard of the utmost importance. Permian Rocks of Permian age cover an enormous area in Brazil, extending from Rio Grande do Sul to Maranhao on the north, and to Matto Grosso on the west. These Permian rocks in many places are known to include oil-bearing shales and in some locations contain small veins of gilsonite. The geologic map of Brazil shows that the Permian area is widely distributed, but there is considerable doubt about the origin of some of the rocks. Some of the lower Permian beds in southern Brazil contain marine fossils, but in Minas no fossils have as yet been found in them, and in Bahia, at only one locality have a few Permian plants been found. Indications of oil have been found in the states of Sa0 Paulo, Parana, and elsewhere farther south, but wells drilled in the Permian of SaO Paulo near the Morro do Bofete did not find oil. One well has been started, by the Brazilian Government, in the Permian of Parana near Marechal Mallet, close to latitude 26" south, but thus far oil has not been found.

In January last I published in the Engineering and Mining Journal a table giving, with a considerable degree of accuracy, the production of anthracite coal for the year 1874. At that time it mas impossible to give any correct estimate of the production of bituminous coal, for the returns I had been able to secure from such distant and scattered districts were not always forwarded punctually, and the work of .obtaining anything like a true estimate of the coal mined in districts from which I was unable to obtain official returns was both laborious and tedious. As will be seen from the detailed reports furnished herewith, I have succeeded in obtaining tolerably accurate returns of 20,093,704 tons; and upon careful revision by numerous well-informed local authorities, my first estimate of the amount of coal not officially returned to me has grown very considerably; indeed, as I get more information on the subject I find that our bituminous coal production greatly exceeds the amount we have been accustomed to hear it placed at, aggregating as it does, 26,465,704 tons. Mr. Andrew Roy, State Inspector of Mines for Ohio, has reported the production of Ohio at 4,168,445 tons, while his first estimates were but 3,820,000 tons; and similarly, in other cases, the more full the returns direct from the mines the more incorrect do I find all previous reports. I am able now to furnish, not an accurate statement, indeed, but by far the most full and reliable one that has yet been published of our coal production. The amount of labor involved in obtaining this admittedly imperfect report has been simply enormous. INTRODUCTION This contract is the most northerly portion of the Metropolitan Sanitary District of Greater Chicago's Tunnel and Reservoir Plan. (TARP) The project begins at Addison Street in Chicago and proceeds northerly approximately ten miles to end at Wilmette Harbor and Lake Michigan. The project which consists of 2 work shafts, 32 drop shafts, 7.322 km (24,020 ft.) of 6.7 m (22 ft.) diameter circular rock tunnel, 8.458 km (27,750 ft.) of 9.2 m (30 ft.) diameter circular rock tunnel and miscellaneous rock bolting and grouting, was bid for a total cost of $63,140,480. The tunnel invert elevation varies from 65.5 m (215 ft.) to 77.4 m (254 ft.) below the ground surface, which places the tunnel in a rock formation of dolomite limestone. At the tunnel invert, the unconfined compressive strength of the limestone varies from 96 MPa (14,000 psi) to 152 MPa (22,000 psi). The 6.7 (22 ft.) diameter tunnel required the mining of 10.9 cu m. (14.2 cu yd.) of rock per lineal foot of tunnel while the 9.2 m (30 ft.) diameter tunnel required the mining of 20.1 cu m (26.3 cu yd.) of rock per lineal foot of tunnel. The total cubic meters of rock required to be excavated from both tunnels was 818,821 cu m (1,070,978 cu yd.). All of this will be mined by tunnel boring machines (TBM). These tunnels were not to be lined with concrete. The thirty two drop shafts have upper portions that are cylindrical in the overburden and rock sections. "Underground stone mines in the United States use the room-and- pillar method of mining. The stability of the roof between pillars determines the mining dimensions and size of equipment that can be used. The findings of a survey of roof span stability issues and design practices are presented, and the observed factors contributing to roof instability are discussed. Identified stability issues are evaluated, such as maximum roof span, horizontal stress, and roof beam stability. The results of field observations, roof monitoring, and numerical analyses are used in the evaluation. The importance of the first roof beam thickness and its impact on roof stability and support requirements is presented. An evaluation of the current experience with stone mine roof spans relative to international experience is presented. A step-by-step design procedure is suggested which emphazises the need to collect adequate geotechnical data, understand the immediate roof stability, select a mining direction, and meet support requirements.INTRODUCTIONIn room-and-pillar mines, the roof between the pillars is required to remain stable during mining operations for haulage as well as access to the working areas. Roof and rib falls account for about 15% of all reportable injuries in underground stone mines (Mine Safety and Health Administration, 2009). Therefore, the stability of the roof is an important safety consideration. The size of the rooms in underground stone mines is largely dictated by the size of the mining equipment. Large mining equipment is used, requiring openings that are on average 13.5 m (44 ft) wide by approximately 7.5 m (25 ft) high to operate effectively (Esterhuizen et al., 2007). The dimensions of the roof spans are largely predetermined by the equipment requirements, and design is focused on optimizing stability under the prevailing rock conditions. If the rock mass conditions are such that the desired stable spans cannot be achieved cost effectively, it is unlikely that underground mining will proceed. In addition, large roof falls can extend across the full width of a room and may extend more than 5 m (16 ft) above the roof line. These large falls are a safety hazard and can have a significant impact on mine access and production. "Natural fibers obtained from plants have increasingly been used as reinforcement of polymeric composites in engineering applications. This is the case of the fiber extracted from the piassava palm tree, a native of the southeast region of South America, which for a long time has been used in simple items like brooms and brushes. Recently it was reported that the tensile strength of the piassava fiber varied inversely with the equivalent diameter. Following that previous work, the elastic modulus and the density dependence on the diameter of stiffer piassava fibers of the Attalea fiinifera species was investigated. Precise measurements with a profile projector and Weibull analysis of the experimental results indicated that both the elastic modulus and the density of piassava fibers also follow an inverse correlation with the diameter. Scanning electron microscopy observations of the microstructure and fracture surface showed that defects and participation of microfibrils are responsible for this correlation.IntroductionIn the past decades, both the increase in the price of the petroleum and climate changes due to greenhouse gas emissions are motivating the use of renewable and low cost natural materials as a substitute for energy intensive and CO2 contributor synthetic materials [1]. A typical case is that of natural cellulose-based fibers extracted from cultivated plants in comparison to glass fibers, which are extensively used for composite reinforcement. In fact, these natural lignocellulosic fibers are increasingly being investigated [2-6] as possible reinforcements of polymeric composites, and in some cases, successfully replacing glass fiber composites in engineering applications [7]. The automobile industry has remarkable examples of lignocellulosic fiber composite substitutions [8-10]. Not only do some of these fibers display specific mechanical properties comparable to glass fibers but their composites also contribute to lower equipment wear and better finishing of molded components [6]."

Introduction THE winning of zinc and lead ores from the comparatively shallow deposits of the Joplin district, presents, few such problems for the mining engineer as are encountered in deep ore mining and in the handling of complex ores. However, for those who are interested in the origin and nature of ore deposits in general, there is much here to investigate, and upon studies in this direction will depend in no small measure the future of an industry that has produced during the year 1916, in southwest Missouri, lead and zinc ores to the value of $26,319,383; adding $46,022,164 to the metallic wealth of the nation. Including the adjacent mines in Ottawa County, Oklahoma, and Cherokee County, Kansas, which are, really continuations of the Joplin district, the total value of ores produced reached the sums of $34,089,503, and that of the metals, $58,927,941.1 The ores produced in the Joplin district are remarkable on account of their almost uniformly high" metal content in both lead and zinc. Their superiority in this regard is unparalleled, and is doubtless clue to certain geological conditions that are now possibly explicable, provided that the artesian circulation = ascension hypothesis of the origin of the ore deposits is proven beyond question to be the only tenable explanation of the facts. These, as well as other valuable zinc-ore deposits, are bound to he exhausted in time, for ordinary mining purposes, acid it concerns the mining engineer that the conditions under which ores of this character were actually deposited in the form in which they occur, may, if possible, be ascertained, in order that he may learn where to look for similar deposits in other regions, or even how to reproduce artificially such condi-

GoldcorpÆs Musselwhite mine in north-western Ontario, Canada has in recent years become a world-class deposit. Initially discovered in the early 1960s by Alan and Harold Musselwhite, the then marginal mine eventually started production in 1997 and has to date produced 2.6 Moz of gold. Two million ounces of gold are currently classified as Mineral Reserve and a further 1.2 Moz of gold are classified in the Mineral Resource category for a total gold inventory approaching 6 Moz. Growth of the mineral inventory has been achieved through the successful implementation of strategic planning that sought to extend the mine life through discovery of additional economic zones and increased mined tonnages. Accelerated exploration activity commenced in 2001, at a time when gold price was at its lowest in decades. Focus was placed on building, developing and retaining a highly skilled geological team, maintaining purpose, conducting external reviews and developing a new geological model through research partnerships. Ongoing collaborative research between Lakehead University and Musselwhite mine has seen the development of new structural and geological models through post-graduate and academic studies. Research has included lithogeochemical, stable isotope and structural and metamorphic studies and has led to the evolution of a new mineralisation model (for the mine) and the recognition of brittle and ductile deformation regimes within the mineralised horizons. Exploration drilling continues to provide support for the new geologic model. Gold discoveries have extended known mineralisation 2.3 km along strike from mineral reserves and laterally into parallel zones. The exploration potential to further increase production rates, Mineral Reserves and Resources remains very positive and increases in overall gold inventory are likely. Musselwhite mine has significantly exceeded initial projections for a ten year life-of-mine and a marginal existence.
