The New Almaden mine was discovered in 1824, and since that date production of quicksilver has exceeded 1,000,000 flasks. Because of this high production record, the New Almaden area was, upon passage. by Congress of the Strategic Minerals Act of 1939, immediately considered by the Bureau of Mines as a promising location for exploration. In 1941, the Federal Geological Survey undertook a survey of the entire district. R. R. Trengove, an engineer of the Bureau of Mines, made a preliminary study for a project in 1942, and in August 1943 the Bureau, in close cooperation with the U. S. Geological Survey, began the development project described herein. The Bureau of Mines drilled 36 holes, totaling 6,807 feet of diamond drilling, along the contact between the serpentine and Franciscan, sandstones and other sedimentary formations. The ore bodies are found along this contact and occur in the carbonate-silica rock. This report briefly describes the location, history, and ore deposits of the property. The recent operations are outlined, and the work performed by the Bureau is explained in detail.

The effect of the degree of nickel oxide reduction and the reaction gas composition on the furnace productivity has been estimated by computations and the established relationship is in good agreement with the practical data obtained in the process of electric smelting at the Severonickel smelter. An increase in the reduction degree within a range of =0.65 - 0.9 results in an increase in the furnace productivity by 19% to 37% and in a decrease in the unit electric power requirement by 16% to 27% depending on the reaction gas composition. The agreement between the computed and practical data has confirmed that the decisive factor for the process of treatment of reduced nickel oxide in an electric-arc furnace under the given conditions is the specific heat absorption, which is dependent on the nickel oxide reduction degree and the reaction gas composition.

The introduction of Progressive Closure and Rehabilitation Plans (PCRPs) in Queensland from 2019 places greater importance on planning and implementation of mine rehabilitation activities. The progress and outcomes of progressive rehabilitation activities is monitored and reported upon to demonstrate success in achieving progress towards the approved post-mining landform, and to inform corrective action where required. The requirements of PCRPs place additional emphasis on mine sites to quantify the risks of successfully achieving planned outcomes. This is particularly challenging given mined-land rehabilitation is a complex process involving decisions on multiple inter-acting management interventions, climatic conditions and spatially variable site characteristics.

The course of motorway tunnel under construction was set only 2 m away from the main motorway. The thickness of the tunnel overburden rock was 9 m. During the tunnel construction the traffic on the motorway was not supposed to be interrupted. The tunneling was carried out by NATM with classical drilling of blastholes and by blasting.

In 1991 the Government of the Republic of Zambia passed legislation providing for the privatisation of Zambia Consolidated Copper Mines Limited (ZCCM). The newly formed Mining Companies, established after nearly a decade of difficult and protracted negotiations on such matters as, cash at close; retained percentage interest by ZCCM; equity investment; future investment commitment and tax concessions, were faced with great internal challenges and a harsh external environment. There was a convergence of a number of negative forces that had and will continue to have an impact on the mining environment in Zambia. The most crucial of these being, the competitive pressures of the global economy, fluctuating copper price and the prevailing HIV/AIDS pandemic. In the short period after privatisation, the Industry has seen the collapse of Binani Industries (Luanshya Mine), the withdrawal of Anglo America Corporation from Konkola Copper Mines Plc and the disposal of Chambishi Cobalt and Acid Plants by Anglovaal Mining Ltd. The objective of this paper is to provide a theoretical and practically researched foundation, which may be used to assist Zambian Mining Companies in making informed decisions on the issue of Strategic Outsourcing and the degree to which this may support the successful and sustainable growth of the Zambian Copper Mining Industry. If judiciously implemented, Strategic Outsourcing has the potential to generate a practical business valuation and process to assist Mine Management in the achievement of their business goals and consequently the return on investment to their Shareholders.

The possibility of using an acidic autogenous hydrogen direct reduced iron (H-DRI) slag as a basis for vanadium extraction is investigated. For a raw material to be suitable for producing high-quality FeV, the vanadium oxide content should be sufficiently high and the phosphorus oxide content in a tolerable range. Therefore, the feasibility for vanadium extraction relies on fulfilling two demands: the predominate partitioning of phosphorus to the metal and vanadium to the slag. Correspondingly, the behaviours of phosphorus and vanadium in the Al2O3-SiO2-FeOx-VyOz-P2O5-Fe system were studied experimentally. Slag, 10 g, was put in contact with liquid iron, 30 g, for different durations (2–24 hrs) in closed alumina crucibles at 1873 K. The slag composition was varied between 33.1– 49.3 wt per cent Al2O3, 27.1–46.7 wt per cent SiO2, 16.6–30.1 wt per cent FeOx, and 2.5– 8.8 wt per cent V2O3. The equilibrium phosphorus distribution was 0.42, while the vanadium distribution ranged from 7.6 to 43.4, increasing with the Al2O3- and the FeOx-content.

The U.S. cement industry experienced its best year ever during 2004 in terms of production and shipments of cement. Clinker, portland and masonry cements production and shipments were up considerably. Clinker production as reported to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) was 87.75 Mt (96.73 million st), an increase of 5.4 percent. Gray and white portland cement production from domestic and imported clinker was estimated to be 91.6 Mt (101 million st), up 5 Mt (5.5 million st) from 2003.

The Lime Creek* ore body in northwestern British Columbia is one of the few commercial primary stockwork-type molybdenite deposits in North America. Others include the Climax, Urad-Henderson, Questa, and Endako ore bodies. They are mined on a low grade-high tonnage basis, and are open pit operations except for Climax and Urad-Henderson. Much recent geochemical research on both porphyry copper and stockwork MoS2 deposits has been concerned with dating of micas related to the mineralization and associated igneous rocks. The results appear to show that mineralization and the predominant magmatic events of the deposit are indistinguishable in age (1-5), except where dating has been in sufficient detail to resolve the analytical overlap (6). At Lime Creek, geologic information shows that the Main granodiorite, the major intrusive and dominant host rock for MoS2 mineralization, was emplaced and had solidified sometime prior to the introduction of MoS2. The first MoS2 episode is intimately related to localized bodies of kalialaskite which clearly intrude the older stock. K-Ar dating was undertaken to clarify the age relations between Lime Creek plutonism and the apparently younger hydrothermal event that began with kalialaskite.

The commissioning of a Distributed Digital Control. System for the grinding circuit at Cuajone, was completed by mid August, 1985. Development of a successful strategy, excellent operator acceptability and the visual aspects offered by the display of the central console, improved mill throughput significantly. The inherent features of a digital system enhanced the flexibility in grinding control and allowed the mills and classifiers to be operated at maximum capacity. This paper discusses in detail the strategy development, the production restrictions encountered, and evaluates the overall performance of the digital control system. 1.0 Introduction In November 1976, the Cuajone Concentrator, located on the western slope of the Andes in Southern Peru, was commissioned to treat a nominal 41,000 TPD of ore. A systematic elimination of production restrictions has resulted in a continual increase of concentrator throughput to 48,700 TPD before the grinding control was in- stalled.

One of the present trends in the mining industry is the increased use of mining contractors. In the past, many project owners have utilized mining contractors for topsoil stripping or overburden removal, usually on a short-term or periodic basis. In recent years, mining contractors have not only removed the overburden, but mined the product as well. Why is this change occurring? A prevalent trend in the mining industry appears to be the outsourcing of non-core and non-strategic functions, allowing producers to focus more on areas of technical expertise where higher incremental value is added—that is the processing, refining, and marketing of the product. As capital allocation becomes more critical, this trend is likely to continue.

The Vale’s Serra Sul mine, also known as S11D project, is one of the world’s largest open pit iron ore mines, located in Brazil’s Amazon region. The mine produces around 90 Mt of high-quality iron ore annually. Its unique orebody enabled the S11D project to adopt a truckless mining system with In-Pit Crushing and Conveying (IPCCs) for ore exploitation and waste stripping. The IPCCs system requires crushing the waste, mainly composed by the jaspilite lithology, and is also conveyed to waste deposits several kilometers away from the mine. Due to Amazon’s environmental restrictions, the project was designed with preliminary geological knowledge, leading to the installation of primary crushers not designed for the hardest jaspilite, with uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) up to 500 MPa. This resulted in low waste crushing performance, affecting stripping ratio and threatening future production. A project was developed to improve the fragmentation of the jaspilite, allowing higher waste IPCC production, and reducing the risk to the production due to low performance of waste crushing and conveying. The first challenge was the independence of the geological and the geomechanical models, while only the geological model was considered in blast designs, the geomechanical model describes six waste groups of jaspilite classified according to their strength. A new geological model was then created to incorporate the geomechanical classification, allowing different blasting design according to the rock strength of the jaspilite. The blasting pattern on most compact jaspilite was reduced 27%, from 22m² to 16m² in 9 7/8” diameter holes, with a proposed theoretical reduction of 23% of the P80, from 326mm to 250mm. The second challenge was the implementation of the new design, as this pattern size and the high powder factor (2.9 kg/m3) were paradigms for such a large iron ore mine. The measured results have shown 25% reduction of the P80, the crushing rate was increased by 17% (230t/h), saving around $2.4 million annually in crushing and conveying system maintenance.

The mineralogy of the primary and oxidized ores from the Malanjkhand porphyry copper deposit in India was studied to determine ore characteristics that affect metallurgy, and to assess applicable processes for recovering the copper. Three mineral assemblages were found. One occurs in primary ore, another in moderately oxidized ore, and a thir:d in intensely oxidized ore. Chalcopyrite, the main mineral in the primary ore, is relatively coarse-grained, with grain size increasing as the ore grade increases. High chalcopyrite liberations should be achieved at a relatively coarse grind, and good chalcopyrite recoveries should be obtained. The chalcopyrite, however, tarnishes readily and oXidizes to chalcocite in a relatively short time (several months). The presence of both the tarnished chalcopyrite and chalcocite may affect chalcopyrite flotation and reduce copper recoveries, The moderately oxidized ore occurs in an oxidized cap immediately above the primary ore, and stockpiled primary ore alters quickly to a moderately oxidized ore. Chalcocite is a major copper-bearing mineral in moderately OXidized ore. The concentrator processing this ore should be capable of handling a chalcocite-rich ore. The intensely OXidized ore contains a wide variety of acid-soluble copper-bearing minerals. Leaching may be required to recover the copper from them.

The use of electrical or electronic safety systems to protect personnel, and the engineering tasks associated with the design, manufacture and maintenance of these systems are referred to using the term ‘functional safety’. In the past ten years, the use of such systems has transitioned from its traditional base, in oil and gas major hazard facilities, to being a part of most large mining and materials handling projects. In particular, functional safety is rapidly becoming a significant component of Australian iron ore projects, typically in the form of emergency stops, remote isolation, drive through interlock, robot cell entry or mobile machine anti-collision systems. While these types of systems have been in use in iron ore for a long time, functional safety standards (eg AS61508, AS62061, AS4024.1503) require more rigourous demonstration of the level of risk reduction provided by the systems.The early engineering project development phases require a number of key decisions to be made around functional safety implementation. The decisions made at this point in a project will go on to dictate the required types of risk assessment and analysis, equipment selection, sizing of substations, and training and maintenance requirements for owners. For project teams that are unfamiliar with functional safety, or inexperienced in its application, an incorrect decision or failure to understand the requirements of the chosen standard can lead to a failure to meet contract requirements, as well as major cost and schedule overruns.This paper examines the implications of functional safety on early engineering studies, focusing on the following questions: How does a designer or company determine what standard is best suited to their project? What key aspects of functional safety design need to be considered during project development? Soda ash, an essential raw material for major industries, such as the glass, chemicals, soap and detergents, pulp and paper, mining and water treatment industries, is traditionally produced by chemical and thermal treatment of trona ore. The treatment processes for trona ore are not only chemically expensive but also energy intensive. Hence, the production of a high-purity trona concentrate at a lower energy and operating cost is of considerable interest to the trona industry. In this study, we describe a possible two-stage process for concentrating trona ore, involving dry magnetic separation followed by flotation, to remove insoluble impurities from the trona ore. The results showed that a trona concentrate of 91.7% purity with a recovery 91.1% can be obtained by two-stage magnetic separation, which could be further improved to 98.1% purity at a recovery of 83.8% by subsequent flotation of the non-magnetic trona product. The purity of trona concentrate is limited by the particle size and impurity content of the trona ore. The operating parameters for magnetic separation and flotation have been identified to obtain an acceptable quality concentrate.

As part of its mine subsidence research program, the Bureau of Mines and the American Electric Power Co. cooperated on a study, conducted at the Price River Coal Co. No. 3 Mine, directed toward developing the capability to estimate the surface subsidence resulting from longwall mining in a geologic, topographic, and mining environment common to coalfields in the Western United States. Subsidence was monitored at the No. 3 Mine over two adjacent longwall panels. The subsidence study area was reduced when the two planned panels were reduced in length because of equipment failure and a mine fire. Subsidence was measured for 21 months. Subsidence continued for 6 months after mining had been completed. A maximum of 2.2 ft of subsidence occurred over the two longwall panels mined at an overburden depth ranging from 300 to 1,500 ft.

This report details the investigation of multiple-seam longwall subsidence conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines from 1978 to 1989. A field investigation monitored ground surface movements over four upper-seam longwall panels and six lower-seam panels. The characteristics of the subsidence occurring as a result of mining these panels are examined; in particular, the angle of draw, subsidence development, total magnitude and areal extent, and critical width are evaluated and discussed. Comparisons are also made between the characteristics of multiple-seam longwall subsidence and single-seam longwall subsidence that occurred at the same site.

Precast concrete segmental linings for tunnels have traditionally been designed with conventional steel bar reinforcement. In many cases, this has been satisfactory in service, but in others, major problems have occurred with the durability of the linings. Commonly this has resulted from corrosion of the reinforcement, mainly from chloridesin ground water, causing spalling of the concrete and leading to very expensive and disruptive repair programs. This paper discusses the relative merits of designing tunnel linings with steel fiber reinforcement to provide long-term durability, improved impact resistance and toughness for greater load capacity across joints, enhanced robustness during transportation and erection, plus improved fire resistance with the addition of polypropylene fibers. Guidance is also given in the selection of the correct fiber type, mix design and testing methods to establish the optimum dosage required and production techniques to ensure even distribution and compaction.

Since World War II, the need for the use of explosives in construction, mining, and quarrying near congested urban areas has increased dramatically. Often times a coal mine, once isolated from a city, finds itself surrounded by residential and commercial structures. The United States Bureau of Mines and others have researched blast design to a point where ground vibration and airblast damage can be avoided. A problem still exists, however. It is the fact that people often react to only the loud noise associated with a blast although it may not cause damage. Most often it is the concussion of a blast, less than 20 hertz and inaudible, that produces damage. Public fear from the "startle" and "fright" of loud blast noise greater than 20 hertz leads to the complaints which are generally unfounded. When blasts are designed in accordance with U.S.B.M. specifications, management generally has little to worry about with respect to damage claims. Complaints, however, still arise when the noise is accentuated from the blast. It is meteorological conditions which dictate how the sound levels will propagate. Some mines use small pilot test shots (generally one-two lbs) to determine when atmospheric conditions favor sound travel.
