Guidelines are provided for the design of explosion-proof electrical enclosures that will meet MSHA certification requirements according to Part 18, Title 30, of the Code of Federal Regulations, and fulfill their intended service underground. The guide covers only those aspects of design which affect enclosure strength, ruggedness, endurance and flame path, i. e., the enclosure ability to properly contain an internal explosion. Internal static and explosion pressures, external impact and thermal heating load are treated as well as the proper selection of materials and welding procedures.

Introduction The most commonly used ground control design in coal mining is the determination of pillar size by various pillar strength formulae for mine layout (Bieniawski, 1983; Holland, 1973; Hustrulid, 1976; Obert and Duvall 1967; Wilson and Ashwin, 1972). However, there have been few documented case histories concerning the validity of those strength formulae. Recently there are indications that those strength formulae tend to overdesign considerably. From a safety point of view, there is nothing wrong with overdesign. But an overdesign with large chain pillars reduces the flexibility of machine movement and decreases production. It also reduces coal recovery and, thus, shortens the reserve's life. This is especially true for small operators who own a limited reserve. Those small mines, through past practices or out of necessity, experiment with smaller pillars than those predicted by the strength formulae. Conclusive ev¬idence has been collected that points to the need of a new concept of coal pillar design. Two case studies will be cited to illustrate this point. 3-D US pillar strength formulae Figure 1 shows a sectional layout of a one-unit mine. The seam was about 1.3 m (50 in.) thick with a uniform cover of 64 m (210 ft). A house was located near the center of the section. The homeowner demanded that no surface subsidence and domestic well dewatering should ever be allowed as a result of underground room-and-pillar mining. Physical properties - strength and Young's modulus - of the rock strata including coal were obtained by testing small samples in the laboratory. The uniaxial compressive strength of the coal was 3660 kPa (823 psi). Using various pillar strength formulae, the homeowner recommended that square chain pillars be at least 11 m (35 ft) wide. The coal company, however, desired to pursue optimum coal recovery in the safest and most economical manner. They engaged in three-dimensional finite element analysis of the section taking into account the complete stratigraphic sequence of the overburden. Results indicated that the section can be developed by 5.5 m (18 ft) wide entries at 21 m (70 ft) center-to-center. In retreat, the pillars can be splitted along both centerlines leaving a stump pillar of 5.5 m (18 ft) square at each of the four corners. Aggregate producers nationwide well recognize the numerous problems often faced in securing local approval to open and operate new gravel pits and rock quarries. Similar problems are faced in Colorado, but this region also presents certain political, social, and geological complexities that have become particularly troublesome in the last 10 years. The gravity of the local permitting dilemma can be related directly to the worsening supply-demand imbalance for aggregates in the state's most populated area, the Front Range urban corridor, particularly the Denver metropolitan area. The drive to develop crushed-rock reserves to supplement dwindling alluvial supplies and to meet increasing regional growth demands was somewhat predictable but perhaps more a "last resort" alternative forced onto producers by a hesitant and often apathetic government.

Prior to 1995, the smelting process at the Kennecott Utah Copper Corporation (KUCC) smelter consisted of Noranda reactors and Pierce-Smith converters. In the consideration of expansion opportunities, the existing process did not lend itself to a program geared towards processing the total output of KUCC mining and milling operations. During 1989 and 1990, a number of smelting options were evaluated. The final selection was the Outokumpu flash smelting process, coupled with the new Kennecott-Outokumpu flash converting technology. Facilities were designed and installed to process 1.0 million tonnes per year of copper concentrate, with the ability to expand to 1.2 million tonnes per year. Following the shutdown of the smelter facility utilizing the Noranda technology in May 1995, the flash smelting furnace commenced operation in June with the flash converting furnace startup following a few weeks later. The smelter has achieved design production targets and environmental goals. Current operating rates are at or above design rates for concentrate and matte processing. Emissions are lower than the permit levels and equate to less than 3.5 kg of S02 per tonne of copper. This paper outlines the design, construction, startup and the first two years of operation of the modernized KUCC smelter.

PREVIOUS investigations of E. L. Tucker and R. E. Head' related in particular to the effect of cyanogen compounds on galena, sphalerite, and pyrite, and their behavior in the presence of such com- pounds. The present contribution deals with the float- ability of the copper minerals and of pyrite. All experiments were performed on minus 200-mesh material, the method of preparation being the same as that described in the previous article. Flotation tests were made in a small mechanically agitated machine of 50-g. capacity designed in this laboratory by Gates and Jacobsen." General Naval Stores pine oil No. 5 and potassium xanthate were used in constant amount in all of the experiments; these agents were selected because of their present wide use in the flotation of copper minerals. Lime additions were varied to secure four 'final hydrogen ion concentrations, namely, neutral, 0.0005 per cent CaO, 0.003 per cent CaO, and 0.02 per cent CaO. The variation in lime addition was introduced to include the range of alkalinities employed in actual flotation practice.

Access to information is a key component for making improvements to any process. This is particularly true for all aspects of the iron mining and steelmaking process. The ability to make rapid control decisions can significantly influence process outcomes, including ensuring product specification, mining quality, transportation limits, upgrade factors, waste bypass and direct shipping, among many others. While traditional laboratory methods provide feedback for such processes, having access to analysis results in real-time can lead to positive reactive and predictive control decisions to be made rapidly, leading to significant improvements throughout the process. Scantech has been designing, manufacturing and supplying technological products to the minerals industry since 2002 to enable the availability of such realtime information to a mine or plant, with the benefits being enjoyed by a wide range of operators. This paper provides a summary of the available technologies used in the iron ore and steel industries, as well as providing a case study of their use at an Australian site, and a description of the potential benefits of a range of analysis equipment.

The performance of electrical grounding systems in open-pit metal mines is evaluated, using techniques which are described thoroughly. The normal electrical distribution and grounding practices used in metallic open-pit mines are reviewed and compared with coal mine usage. The results are used to generate the included recommendations for Federal Regulations concerning open-pit metal mine grounding systems.

"The fortunes of mining companies and their implied value are tied to cycles - both economic and commodity – within which they operate. Hence the determination of appropriate future metal prices is one of the most critical factors faced by mineral valuators especially for advanced projects. Price, and hence revenue, is usually the most sensitive input to the valuation model. Empirical studies of past forecasts show that the success rate for commodity price forecasting is very poor. This paper explores various approaches and comments on their strengths and weaknesses. We conclude that careful evaluation of long-term metal prices is a key element and is hardly a luxury that can be left to simple averages or rules of thumb. INTRODUCTION Discounted Cash Flow (""DCF"") analysis, is well suited for the valuation of advanced mineral development assets, for which there are identified mineral resources and some form of economic assessment (Pre-Feasibility or Feasibility Study). The DCF method is also the most commonly used method for determining value for such assets. It provides a means of relating the magnitude of expected future cash flows from profits (or losses) to the magnitude of the initial cash flow (investment) needed for capital expenditures to purchase or to develop an asset for commercial production. The method proves useful in making investment decisions as it allows for the quantification of the Net Present Value (“NPV”), as well as the Internal Rate of Return (IRR) and Payback Period on initial investment capital. Valuation by its very nature is a forward-looking exercise. The DCF method attempts to estimate the NPV of expected future cash flows, by selecting factors that will likely affect future cash flow based on informed analysis. One of the most critical and sensitive factors is the determination of appropriate future commodity prices. “The variables that have the greatest impact on a DCF evaluation are the reserves, the metal prices, and the discount rate.”1 The determination of future commodity prices for valuation purpose or during M&A negotiations is a hotly contested issue. There are a number of analysts, institutions and specialized commercial data suppliers that provide both short and long-term commodities price forecasts. Also, the use of an aggregated mean for all available forecasts, or consensus forecasted prices for valuation purposes is not uncommon. The methods used in making forecasts for each forecaster may vary and in many cases may not be publically disclosed. Nonetheless, the aggregated mean of all forecasted commodity prices of reputed institutions is usually taken to “represent the market’s view of likely future commodity prices.”"

DIFFERENT authors1 ' have been engaged in meas-uring the vapor pressure of pure cobalt. The results of their measurements satisfy the expected temperature dependence of vapor pressure and are in mutual agreement, with the exception of the results by De Dyk Man and ~esmejanov.~ The latter authors, by using the effusion method, have achieved considerably higher values than other workers. By using the isotope exchange method they obtained much lower values than other authors. The determination of thermodynamic functions of the binary Ni-Co system was carried out, as far as we know, only by De Dyk Man and Nesmejanov.4 This determination was based on extremely low values of vapor pressure over pure cobalt obtained by the isotope exchange method. Therefore we considered it useful to repeat these measurements. Furthermore, the reliable values of thermodynamic functions should complement the migration characteristics, the inner magnetic field data obtained by Miissbauer effect measurements, specific heat data, and the K effect and positron annihilation characteristics that have been achieved for the Ni-Co system in the Institute of Metallurgy of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences in Brno.5-9 The measurements in this paper were performed by the isotope exchange method. In this method, as has been shown by analysis,10-'3 the vaporization rate, w, can be calculated from the relation w = k/1oSw [1] i0Sw) [1] where L, is the activity per unit mass of the source, S is the area of evaporation, k is the tangent at the point t = 0 to the curve giving the radioactivity de-pendence of the target vs annealing time, t, and wis the probability for the tracer atom condensation on the target surface. The value for cc. can be obtained from the equation w = a + 2P(l-a) [2] where P is Clausing's coefficient and a is the condensation coefficient. In the present work the cylinder shaped containers for annealing the samples were used, characterized by the ratio 1:d = 1.06. Here 1 is the length and d the diameter of the container. For this ratio P = 0.514 and w =0.5, and w is independent of the condensation coefficient. The vaporization rate is related to the vapor pressure p by the relation where R is the gas constant, T is the absolute temperature, and M is the molecular weight of the component investigated. Measurements of the vapor pressure of the i component over the pure metal, p!, and the alloy, pi, at the given temperature and composition enable one to calculate the thermodynamic activity of this component from the equation ai=pi/pi [4] is and the activity coefficient ri=ai/xi [5] xi where xi is the molar fraction of the investigated alloy component. EXPERIMENTAL Evaporization rate measurements were carried out with pure cobalt and eight different Ni-Co alloys, which were kindly delivered by the Centre National de Recherches Me'tallurgiques Liege, Belgium. The composition of the alloys is given in Table I. The cobalt used in these alloys contained the following impurities: 0.016 wt pct Fe, 0.014 wt pct Cu, 0.01 wt pct Mn. Other elements were present in much lower concentrations. From the melts, samples in the form of small cylinders of 12 mm in diam were ma-chined. The Oak Creek Power Plant in Oak Creek, Wisconsin is currently undertaking an expansion project. In order to supply cooling water to this facility, a 27' (8.2m) diameter tunnel will be bored, in rock; to connect to 4 vertical Intake shafts located approximately 1.5 miles (2.4km) offshore in Lake Michigan. In 2004, Case Foundation Company was awarded a lump sum contract to Install these intake shafts. When complete, the plant is expected to circulate upward of 2 billion gallons per day (7.5 billion liters) through this system. Two shafts were drilled in a (shortened) construction season in 2005 and the remaining 2 shafts and 4 liner assemblies were completed in 2006. Future connection to the tunnel, in 2007, will be accomplished by mining upward to reach the lower portion of each liner and then removing its internal bulkheads to permit the flow of the lake water into the tunnel.

The study re-examines respirable coal mine dust samples using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). It finds that SEM tends to overpredict the abundance of dust from rock strata and underpredict coal content, possibly due to coal-mineral microagglomerates (MAGs). The findings suggest that MAGs could be valuable in improving dust controls in mines.

In the present work, the effect of pH, non-ionic polyacrylamide flocculant and anionic polyphosphate on rheology and settling behaviour of colloidal TiO2 suspensions (15 ? 50 wt% solid) is investigated. Maximum particle aggregation, reflecting in the highest suspension settling rate and maximum shear yield stress was achieved at pH 7.2, the isoelectric point (iep), consistent with DLVO expectation. However, the maximum aggregation condition at the iep also resulted in the poorest suspension consolidation behaviour. Significantly enhanced consolidation was achieved for a more dispersed suspension at pH values away from the iep but at reduced settling rate. Thus, when pH alone is used to control conditions which facilitate strong interparticle attraction, a high settling behaviour which is not conducive to compact consolidation results. Improved suspension consolidation may be achieved at the iep via anionic polyphosphate addition which leads to attenuation of the strongly attractive van der Waals forces and emergence of "soft" repulsion due to weak inter-particle electro-steric forces. The weak repulsion act to lubricate particles involved in the hydrodynamic interactions which controls the compressibility of the sediment bed, allowing a compact consolidation of solids to be obtained. Alternatively, non-ionic polyacrylamide homo-polymer (Magnafloc 333) was fairly effective in flocculating titanium dioxide suspensions leading to high settling rate and acceptable pulp consolidation at the iep.

A regional geochemical exploration programme commenced in July 1983, based upon low-density sampling of lateritic duricrust over parts of the Yilgarn Block of Western Australia. This resulted in recognition of an area significantly anomalous in chalcophile elements that progressively led to the discovery of the Johnston Range gold deposits in 1985. The deposits, on the Barlee 1:250,000 map sheet, occur in four mineralized zones, and production is expected to commence during 1988. The programme leading to the Johnston Range discoveries was a collaborative research/ applications study between the AGE Joint Venture (Greenbushes Ltd., St. Joe Minerals, and from 1985, Sons of Gwalia NL) and the CSIRO Laterite Geochemistry Research Group (Smith, 1987). It built upon a precursor project sponsored by Greenbushes Tin Ltd that commenced in 1980 and arose from an orientation laterite research project in the Greenbushes rare metal pegmatite district (Smith et at., 1987). Both were multi-commodity programmes and included the search for gold deposits. Basic methodologies for sampling and data interpretation have been described by Smith and Perdrix (1983) and Smith et at. (1984). Continuous geochemical coverage of designated parts of greenstone belts was sought using a triangular grid of 3-km or 1-km spacing, depending upon the expected prospectivity of the areas and the size and characteristics of the ore deposit targets. Recently, noequilbrium electrokinetic measurements using laser-Doppler electrophoresis were reported by Miller et al. (1992) for alkali halides and the sign of their surface charge thus determined. These results are generally as expected from simplified lattice ion hydration theory with KCI, under normal circumstances, being the most significant exception. In this regard, lattice defects (F centers and oxygen imperfections) have been found to influence the surface charge of KCI and its electrophoretic mobility. In particular, the presence of oxygen defect states in the crystal lattice has been found to be responsible for KCI's unexpected behavior. The concentration of oxygen defect states in KCI, as characterized by UV/Vis absorption, was varied in order to study their influence on the electrokinetic behavior and subsequently on the flotation response of KCl. At low oxygen contents « 60 ppm) KCI is positively charged as expected from lattice ion hydration theory. However, typically, KCI contains substantial oxygen (>300 ppm) sufficient to impart a negative surface charge which accounts for the selective flotation of KCI from NaCl by hetero-coagulation with oppositely charged alkyl amine hydrochloride collector colloids.

FROM the primary gyratory crushing plant, described in MacLeod's article, ore is delivered to a large storage or surge bin from which it is carried by two transverse conveyors to the secondary crushing plant. The bin has a useful drawoff of about 13,000 tons, this being slightly over one half of the initial daily capacity of the Morenci Reduction Works. This arrangement provides sufficient storage to permit intermittent operation of the primary and secondary crushing plants without too close a coordination between the two.

Barrick has had 6 autoclaves in operation at the Goldstrike Mine, North of Carlin Nevada, since 1993. The 6 autoclaves operate in parallel, processing slurry of gold ore. The gold in the ore is predominantly associated with, and encapsulated by, sulphide minerals. It is necessary to oxidize at least 90% of the sulphide mineral before the gold can be concentrated using a cyanide/carbon-in-leach (CIL) circuit. Sulphide oxidation chemical reactions occurring in the autoclaves are exothermic; however, the sulphide content in the ore is not high enough to operate the autoclaves in an auto-thermal mode. Heat from steam is added to the first 2 of 5 autoclave compartments to initiate the sulphide oxidation reactions. The steam used to heat the autoclaves is supplied by three boilers, which are fuelled with propane gas. The completion of a few operations and maintenance projects in the last 2 years has resulted in a 50% reduction in propane energy requirements. The autoclave operating temperatures were minimized. Excess oxygen addition was held as low as possible. The material of construction for the compartment walls inside the autoclaves was changed from brick to Titanium metal. And, the speed of the autoclave slurry agitators was increased. All of these activities had an impact on the propane energy requirements of the autoclaves. Presented below is a description of the autoclave systems, and a discussion of how the energy needs were reduced, resulting in significant operating cost savings.

The Virginia Center for Coal and Energy Research has been developing models of wireless signal propagation in underground coal mines since 2007. The current mine propagation modeling software, named COMMS, is able to locate potential broadcast points for underground wireless mesh systems and estimate their coverage. COMMS utilizes programmed routines to calculate necessary values to both quantitatively and qualitatively solve and analyze predicted coverage areas. The program approximates the spatial relationships that are encountered, such as ventilation regulators, belts and other obstructions. Using this model for propagation allows the optimal communications node locations to be calculated, by using lessons learned from current installations and experience with the new technology. In addition, the optimization can be calculated by checking all possible combinations of broadcast locations. This paper compares these optimization calculation methods. The ability to solve a mine?s communication network provides a pre-installation mine network design map, creates coverage maps of the mine and allows planning for future communication activities

The three days of technical sessions, at which 350 delegates are expected, will include introductory films on the properties and uses of stainless steels, papers on corrosion problems and prevention, design and economics, welding and applications in industries of particular importance to South Africa. The programme includes four overseas guest speakers who are acknowledged leaders in their respective fields. "One of the more challenging issues facing operators of U.S. mines and quarries is blasting in an environmentally acceptable way. It is quite important that industry management understand and apply guidance, discipline, and control in the exercise of blasting operations. This presentation is a discussion of problems related to that environment away from the blasthole that may or may not be adversely affected by blasting and the steps management may consider in resolving resultant problems. In any case, one of the main concerns that will continuously be brought up is thatmanagement procedures inherent to good blasting is a uxporate responsibility of the mine or quarry business entity; and can not be delegated to the explosive manufacturer or supplier. This management attitude, based on education, training, and the comprehension that the process of production begins with drilling and blasting and consumes a significant amount of overall production costs."
