The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated column flotation for recovery of a high-grade fluorite (CaF2) concentrate and byproduct concentrates from the Fish Creek fluorite deposit in Eureka County, NY. The recovery scheme consisted of (1) grinding the ore to minus 48 mesh, (2) fluorite rougher and cleaner flotation, (3) desliming the rougher fluorite flotation tailings at 20 Jjm, (4) mica flotation, and (5) silicate rougher flotation. Acid-grade fluorspar, mica, free silica (Si02) sand, and low-grade beryl (Be3Al2S~018) concentrate were produced in a 100 lb/h continuous column flotation unit (CCFU). The highest results achieved were %.6-pct CaF2 recovery in a fIrst cleaner concentrate containing 99.7 pct CaF2. Beryl recovery was as high as 92 pct at a grade of 5.3 pct BeO. The silica sand, which assayed 98 pct Si02, was recovered as the rougher beryl flotation tailings. Collector reagent consumption was reduced 45 pct for fluorite and 58 pet for silicate flotation in comparison with bench-scale conventional flotation. All products were signillcantly improved in both grade and recovery over conventional flotation results, and the recovery scheme was simplifIed by removal of several stages of flotation in the fluorite and silicate flotation steps.

The stability of rock slopes is significantly influenced by their curvature in plan view. The importance of this in open pit mining is indicated by the fact that, in a deep pit, steepening of the slopes by 1° may save as much as $100 million. It is considered that there are two significant factors that play a part in the influence of plan curvature. These two factors are the effect of stress, and the effect of geological structure. The scant literature that pertains to this aspect of rock slope design was reviewed. The geometrical influence of the plan curvature was then investigated. It was seen that it has a parabolic effect on the maximum possible wedge that can fail into a circular pit, where the tighter the concave curvature the smaller the wedge. The plan curvature also affects the volume of a particular wedge, where concave slopes result in an exponential decrease in the volumes and convex slopes have exponentially increased wedge volumes. A change in the strike of the wedge did not affect the curvature’s influence on the volume, but the volumes of shallower dipping wedges were affected more by the influence of the plan curvature. Es wird betrachtet, daß es zwei bedeutende Faktoren gibt, die eine Rolle im Einfluß der Planbiegung spielen. Diese zwei Faktoren sind der Effekt des Druckes und der Effekt der geologischen Struktur. Mineral aggregates are those natural and manufactured industrial mineral and rock materials that provide bulk and strength in port- land cement concrete, bituminous concrete mixes, and plaster or stucco surfaces. They may also provide special characteristics such as thermal and acoustical insulation, weight, surface textures, abrasion resistance, and impermeability to various concrete products and mixes. Most aggregates are relatively inexpensive materials, but despite their low unit value, the tonnages consumed each year in the United States and throughout the world make mineral aggregates by far the leading industrial mineral and rock materials both in terms of volume (tonnage) produced and value consumed. The major use of mineral aggregates is in concrete. The low cost, high bulk aggregates tend to keep concrete construction costs at levels competitive with other building materials. Other major uses of aggregates include highway and railroad base or ballast materials, graded fill, and various industrial uses such as metallurgical and chemical fluxes and raw materials-these latter uses are often considered nonaggregate uses of mineral aggre- gate materials. The value of mineral aggregate materials at the production plant varies from less than a dollar per ton to several dollars per ton for most crushed stone and sand and gravel, $2 to $15 per ton for slag and expanded clay or shale aggregate, to as much as $60 to $100 per ton for expanded perlite or vermicu- lite. The more specialized the use, the higher the price-although there are naturally some exceptions to this rule of thumb. The first four parts of "Construction Materials" deal with the utilization of four major mineral aggregate types: Crushed Stone, Light- weight Aggregates, Sand and Gravel, and Slag. CANANEA has long been recognized as a remarkable field for geologic study. The copper deposits and rocks of the district have been described by many geologists and engineers, but only the most general correlations have been made between Cananea sedimentary rocks and other known sedimentary sections in the southwestern United States and northern Mexico. The present paper describes the Cananea sediments in greater detail than has been done before and attempts to fit the Cananea sedimentary section more closely into the geologic time table. The lack of well-preserved fossils has made it difficult to date the sediments accurately in geo- logic time, but it is possible to make tentative correlations between the Cananea sediments and the southeastern Arizona sections, based largely upon lithology and general position in the geologic column. It appears that sedimentation at Cananea and Bisbee may have been closely similar during Paleozoic time. Even such generalized correlations, however, may be subject to considerable modification in the future. The present study has led to the recognition of other problems of age and mineralization relationships in the Cananea district. Cananea is located in the north-central part of the state of Sonora, Mexico, at an elevation of 5270 ft. It is about 135 miles northeast of Hermosillo, the state capital, and 25 miles south of the international boundary. By road Cananea is 40 miles from the twin towns of Naco, Ariz., and Naco, Sonora, and about 50 miles from Bisbee, Ariz. It is served by the Nogales-Naco branch of the railroad, F.C. Pacifico, and is connected with Chihuahua and Mexico City by the Aeronaves airline.

The velocity of gas passing through a flotation cell can be estimated by collecting bubbles by natural buoyancy in a closed tube and measuring the rate of pressure increase. The governing equation is derived and verified. Single- and two-tube gas velocity sensors are described. The latter design permits a correction for bulk density and level change during signal collection.

The potential benefits of implementing the Last Planner System (LPS) on mining infrastructure projects were explored through two case studies in the South African mining industry. The first part of the study involved measurement of the impact of LPS through earned value techniques on secondary project data. The second part sought to establish the lean construction success factors leading to improvements in construction performance. This was done by means of a research questionnaire distributed to the project owner’s teams, contracted parties, and the LPS facilitators. The results revealed a positive correlation between LPS application and planned percentage complete. However, the performance achieved during the LPS pilot was not sustained. The success factors and benefits considered most evident in the case study pilot differed among the three stakeholder groups. The findings are expected to guide construction stakeholders to better define performance measures and focus on factors required to make LPS implementation more effective in the South African mining sector.

There was a tendency several years ago for the average coal producer to more or less sit back satisfied with the big utility and metallurgical mar¬kets with long term contracts, not realizing, or possibly not evaluating correctly the importance of the growing industrial market Even the companies which were producing coal for the industrial market were primarily interested in the larger industrial customer, not fully realizing that a large percent of the industrial coal sold was to plants using less than 15,000 tons per year. As a result, possibly, the greatest inroad made by competitive fuel was made in this group. The situation mentioned previously cannot be blamed entirely on the fact that the coal markets were not evaluated in their proper perspective. Some of the responsibility would have to be due to the situation that existed during the last war' and the period immediately following, when most of the coal was put to markets of higher realization, leaving the relatively small -industrial user-to get his fuel wherever he could. This usually would mean coal from some 'gopher hole" with fluxuating quality and supply. Therefore, it was not uncommon for some industrial customers to go to competitive fuels as soon as equipment and fuel were available. Fortunately, before this situation got completely out of control, the coal producers, realizing the seriousness of the problem, made available, usually through their sales department, combustion engineers and other specialists, to help the industrial user with his problems; The engineers usually found several problems, old equipment, use of incorrect size con¬sist, ash and fusion coals, lack of automation, fly ash and dust problems which increased cost and jeopardized the customer's relations with his employees and the public.

The Fitzroy River Aqua-Eco Health Project is a collaborative research project between the Central Queensland University, the University of Queensland and BMA. It is designed to assess the aquatic ecology and health of the streams within the Fitzroy catchment located adjacent to mine sites. The universities are conducting an independent sampling program expected to yield the most comprehensive monitoring to date. The project design incorporates in situ testing of water quality variables including temperature, dissolved oxygen, conductivity, oxidation reduction potential, pH and turbidity. Water and sediment chemistry incorporate testing for sulfate, suspended solids, nutrients and metals. This sampling is complemented by quantifying changes in the abundance and diversity of a wide range of biota, including microbial, macro invertebrates and fish.This paper will detail the program and highlight some of the particular difficulties in conducting this type of research in ephemeral stream systems. A principal ferramenta de controle do processo BOF reside na regulagem dos parâmetros de sopro de oxigênio. As condições ótimas desse processo envolvem diversas variáveis, como vazão de oxigênio, distancia banho lança (DBL), número de furos para a saída de oxigênio na lança, entre outros fatores. Através de uma análise visual da penetração do jato e do volume movimentado, foram analisados os comportamentos para cada configuração de sopro entre diferentes combinações de bicos multifuros (3 a 6 furos), para uma distância banho lança (DBL) e vazão constantes. A análise dos parâmetros de interação entre o sopro e o banho líquido composta pelas frações de metal e escória, representados respectivamente por água e óleo de parafina é o principal objetivo deste trabalho. Foi necessário desenvolver nova metodologia para a determinação da penetração assim como proposta de nova fórmula e ajuste da constante empírica, fator K. As maiores penetrações foram alcançadas com os bicos de 3 e 4 furos. Para a configuração de 6 furos, foram encontrados os menores valores de penetração e maior volume de zonas de baixa movimentação em relação aos parâmetros estabelecidos.

The Siwek 20-L chamber is widely used throughout the world to evaluate the explosibility of dusts. This research evaluated the quality of dust dispersion in the Siwek 20-L chamber using Pittsburgh coal, Gilsonite, and purple K dusts. A Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL) optical dust probe was used to measure optical transmittance through the dust cloud at various locations within the chamber. A total of 540 tests were performed, with triplicate tests at five nominal dust concentrations and six locations. The two standard dispersion nozzles (rebound and perforated annular nozzle) were compared. The transmissions corresponding to the normal ignition delay period were used to: (a) determine variations in spatial uniformity of dispersion obtained with both nozzles; (b) make comparisons between the experimental transmission data and those calculated from theory for the three dusts; and (c) make comparisons with transmission data measured in the PRL 20-L and Fike 1-m3 dust explosion chambers. The uniformity of dispersion for the three dusts was similar with both nozzles, despite the differences in nozzle geometry and mode of operation. Transmission data of the three dusts were all significantly lower than those calculated from theory. This was discovered to be, in part, due to significant reduction in particle size that occurred during dispersion. By measuring particle sizes before and after dispersion, values of 60%, 50%, and 20% reduction in particle size (based on the surface-weighted mean diameter) were obtained for Pittsburgh coal, Gilsonite, and purple K, respectively. Transmission data from the PRL 20-L, Fike 1-m3 and the Siwek 20-L chambers indicated comparable results in terms of uniformity of dispersion. However, transmission data from the Siwek 20-L chamber were significantly lower than those of the PRL and Fike chambers. Again, this was attributed, in part, to the significant reduction in particle size that occurred during dispersion in the Siwek chamber. The design of the outlet (dispersion) valve of the Siwek 20-L apparatus charge vessel was largely responsible for the particle break-up. The contribution to particle break-up by the dispersion nozzles and the high level of turbulence in the chamber were found to be minimal. This is a significant finding in that the dust particle size tested for explosibility in the Siwek chamber is considerably smaller than the original dust sample.

A 25-mm diameter dense-medium cyclone was tested to investigate the effects of geometry and operating conditions on cyclone performance when processing -150 I'm coal. The emphasis was on examining those variables (e.g., flow rate and inlet velocity) which impact the separation kinetics (specifically the number of g's and the mean retention time) and the occurrence of apparent bypass. Apparent bypass, indicated by partition curve "tails", results from the short circuiting of the feed coal to one or both of the product streams and represents a loss and/or contamination of the clean coal. This paper presents the results for this series of tests.

"This paper describes the application of Raman Spectroscopy for characterizing superconducting YBCO thin film parameters. Attenuation of the substrate Raman spectrum as a function of material deposited is established. Also a correlation between film quality and Raman spectrum is explored. The identification and discrimination of superconducting and non-superconducting phases of YBCO is presented. The critical temperature (Tc) of a film as a function of its oxygen content is also established using Raman peak ratios. These results provide significant implications toward the use of Raman Spectroscopy for in situ monitoring and control of the PLD process. Film quality can be controlled via optimization of film oxygen content and reduction of improper YBCO phases. Film thickness can be controlled by monitoring the response of the substrate material. Also the PLD process can be studied and modeled using this powerful observation tool.IntroductionSuperconductors are materials that possess unique characteristics when cooled to sufficiently low temperatures. Below a material's critical temperature (Tc) it exhibits zero resistance to current flow. One such material, yttrium barium copper oxide (YBCO) has a critical temperature of approximately 92° K. Due to its high critical temperature YBCO is being aggressively researched for many possible applications, because of high current carrying capability and strong pinning of flux lines.YBCO in the 123 form is a ceramic material that was discovered in February, 1987. Its unit cell structure is shown in Figure 1 [ 1,2]."

PREPARATION of mechanically loaded coal in mines where seams contain considerable impurities is a subject that requires careful consideration before machines are installed, unless provision is made at the tipple for its preparation. Conditions vary a great deal in the different seams, so much so that a mechanical loader may be unsuccessful in one seam and yet the same machine may make good in another where conditions are different. The effect of impurities in the coal seam on mechanical loading will also vary according to the thickness of the seam. In thin seams impurities will be more difficult to remove than from thick seams, as will appear later. For the past several years the New River Co. has done considerable experimenting with loading equipment and during this process has changed from one machine to another.

Wheel loaders are currently being used in many mining applications for a variety of reasons. While they sometimes provide the lowest loading cost, a primary advantage of the wheel loader versus other loading systems is the increased versatility and mobility inherent in a wheeled vehicle. The advent of large wheel loaders with much greater digging capability enhanced wheel loader usage in severe loading applications. To match these severe conditions, machines offered today were designed to work in these rocky conditions. Soon after the introduction of large wheel loaders into rocky conditions, however, it became apparent to many users that tire costs could at times account for up to 50% of total hourly operating costs on large wheel loaders. In some applications, tire costs alone pushed wheel loader economics beyond the economic feasibility for these jobs, prohibiting their use. In an effort to combat high tire costs, several attempts have been made to put fast moving steel around the tires to provide a strong interface between vehicle and ground. Some earlier attempts involved wrapping tracks around tires. Mechanical difficulties with these systems limited their customer acceptance. Subsequently, the development of protective tire chains came into favor. While tire chains offered added protection to the tires, the cost and maintenance of the chains remains a problem in 1972, the Dystred arrangement was announced for usage on a 6 cu yd wheel loader from Caterpillar Tractor Co. (See Figure 1). The Dystred offered the advantages of greatly increased tread life over conventional tires, as well as resistance to tread puncture in most situations. The arrangement basically employed a track system similar to that used on track type loaders. Pin and bushing wear often caused high hourly operating costs and excessive machine downtime. In addition, the connection of shoes through the use of links, pins, and bushings forced a limitation on too speed of the vehicle.

"Gold associations were established in a·biooxidized, chlorinated CIL residue assaying 0.02 oz Ault and in a biooxidized thiosulfate leach residue assaying 0.01 oz Au/t. A detailed mineralogical study involved: assays of screened fractions; light microscopy; ion probe microanalysis to quantify 'invisible' gold in sulfide minerals; proton probe microanalysis to detect and quantify preg-robbed gold. In the CIL residue, most of the gold is preg-robbed (71 %). In the thiosulfate leach residue, gold occurs mainly as submicroscopic disseminations in microcrystalline quartz (chert). In both residues, the 'invisible' gold in pyrite accounts for a minor fraction of the gold assay. Quantitative determination of the gold occurrence in the two residue samples established conclusively that gold adsorption on carbonaceous matter in the thiosulfate leach is of minor importance.Acknowledgement: published with permission of Newmont Gold Company."

"One of the most common emissions from detonating explosives are nitrogen oxides (NOx), which are potentially deadly if inhaled. Lab studies estimate emission quantities, though great variation is shown based on site-specific conditions, and lab tests may not fully represent field results. Field VALUES (have not been measured due to the vast area affected. OSMRE recently promised to release a ruling regarding surface mine NOx production. Once the ruling is implemented, it may eventually be necessary to monitor site-specific NOx production from blasting. A small unmanned aerial vehicle system (sUAS) is able to carry a NOx gas monitor, rapidly travel to the blast location, and to follow resulting clouds of dust and emission gasses. This project will perform laboratory tests to expand on current estimations, determine an optimal method for collecting data, and evaluate the ability for this unique application of sUAS to assist in health risk assessment for mine employees and nearby communities. Additionally, large initial NOx concentrations do not necessarily correlate to unsafe conditions, and this project will be ground breaking in observance of surface blasting emission dispersion. The project is still in early phases at the time of submission for this paper (Nov 1, 2017). Therefore, this paper focuses primarily on summarizing background research related to the project and a description of the project plan. INTRODUCTION Nitrogen oxide gases (NOx) are common emission by products of surface mine blasting. These gases can potentially cause risk to human health and safety, both for mine workers and communities near the blast site. However, these emission quantities are largely unmeasured and no attempts have been made to relate these VALUES (to human health risk. The primary objectives of this project are to determine actual quantities of emission gases produced during surface blasting, to evaluate immediate and long-term risks to nearby people, communities, and ecosystems, to develop a system for mine employees to easily monitor emission and risk levels, and then provide guidelines for mitigating health risks based on a location’s emission results. BACKGROUND Current research regarding health risk produced by surface mine blasting NOx emissions is extremely lacking. Estimations have been made based on laboratory research, though these same test results show wide ranges of possible gas quantities produced based on site-specific conditions. Even if these estimations are accurate, no method has been created to relate gas quantity produced to human exposure concentrations. To further understand this field, background research was studied pertaining to blasting emission gas formation, laboratory and field measurements, harmful effects of blasting emission gases, and relevant government regulations. It was established as a subsidiary of union pacific corporation in 1971 with responsibility for coal, uranium, and industrial minerals. We participate in four coal mining operations and a uranium mine and mill all in Wyoming, and an aggregate and an abrasive operation in Utah.

In these times of increasing costs and diminished returns, energy consumption is one source of savings that remains relatively untapped in the mining sector. Typically, 15% to 40% of operational costs can be attributed to energy in mining operations. This ?process variable? is a complex, multi-faceted variable that involves government regulations, societal pressures, cost and competitiveness. A mining company able to successfully embrace an energy efficiency program is more often than not a successful mining company. Production optimization programs, relatively common today, provide increased production, increased availability of assets and, in many cases, improved quality. They generally ignore the energy question altogether. Production Energy Optimization combines reductions in energy consumption with production improvements to reduce the cost per unit of production while improving emissions reporting. An energy strategy in mining and mineral processing operations is a critical component of Production Energy Optimization. This strategy must support the financial and operational integrity of the business. Developing a successful energy strategy requires a well structured approach such as following: ??Understanding where energy is being used and why, ??Recommending and implementing energy conservation measures, ??Driving visibility to targets and results, ??Re-evaluating continuously. The objective of this paper is to help you better understand the process, tools and technologies that enable mining organizations today to address energy and sustainability issues more tactically and proactively.
