O refino de grão da estrutura bruta de solidificação da liga Cu-8%Sn com a adição de Zr foi estudado através da análise térmica e da observação da macro e microestrutura. Os resultados macro e microestruturais mostram que a adição de Zr causa a diminuição do tamanho médio de grão em até 90%. A diminuição do super-resfriamento da recalescência e do período da recalescência, medidos nas curvas de resfriamento, estão correlacionados com a diminuição do tamanho médio de grão causado pela crescente adição de Zr, indicando uma possibilidade de controle do tamanho de grão a partir da análise térmica. A análise da microestrutura das amostras em conjunto com a técnica de extração de precipitados por réplica mostra evidências de que o mecanismo de inoculação é a nucleação heterogênea da fase Cu-a sobre as partículas de ZrC formadas no banho líquido a partir das adições de Zr.

Refractory gold concentrates often contain submicroscopic gold that is encapsulated within the crystal matrix of iron sulfide minerals, such as pyrite, pyrrhotite and arsenopyrite. To recover the gold, the host mineral must generally be broken down chemically by oxidative processes, such as roasting, pressure oxidation or bacterial leaching, which expose the gold for subsequent recovery by leaching in cyanide solution. The focus of attention in these pretreatment processes is usually the oxidation of the sulfides to elemental sulfur, sulfur dioxide gas or sulfate ions. Less attention is paid to the deportment of iron and the changes in its oxidation state, although this can have a profound effect on gold and silver liberation, as well as downstream operating costs. Iron sulfide minerals break down completely during pressure oxidation, and dissolve in the sulfuric acid solution that is gener-ated from oxidation of the sulfides. This dissolution liberates the tiny gold particles that were originally trapped in the sulfide crystals, and gold recovery during subsequent cyanidation is usually very high (>95%). Iron goes into solution in the oxidation process, initially as ferrous sulfate, but this compound is rapidly oxidized to ferric sulfate, which then hydrolyzes and reprecipitates. The form of the precipitate varies depending on the operating conditions in the autoclave and the presence of certain metal cations. When the acidity in the autoclave is quite low (<20 g/L H2SO4) and the temperature is high (>200°C), the formation of hematite is favored. When the acidity is high (>20 g/L H2SO4) and the temperature is relatively low (160 to 200°C), the formation of basic iron sulfate is favored. If the ore or the leach solution contains significant levels of certain cations (such as Na+, K+, NH4+, Ag+ or Pb2+) and the acidity is high (>20 g/L H2SO4), jarosite compounds are favored. Hematite is the desired iron product in the autoclave discharge, for both metallurgical and environmental reasons, but it is difficult to operate an autoclave under the conditions required for effective liberation of gold without converting some of the iron to basic iron sulfate and/or jarosite. These compounds fall into a category of iron compounds known generically as iron hydroxy sulfates, all of which can cause significant processing and environmental problems in the downstream gold process. This paper deals specifically with basic iron sulfate: the conditions under which it is formed in an autoclave, the problems that are caused by its presence in the feed to a cyanidation plant and possible remedial strategies that can be adopted, both in the autoclave and downstream.

A remoção de inclusões nos distribuidores de lingotamento contínuo tem sido investigada por meio de modelamentos físicos e matemáticos. Recentemente, a injeção de gás nos distribuidores tem sido considerada como uma alternativa para aprimorar a remoção de inclusões. Vários trabalhos vêm sendo desenvolvidos analisando os efeitos da injeção de gás e sua interação com as inclusões. No entanto, existe espaço para mais investigações envolvendo o efeito da vazão do gás e a localização do sistema de injeção de gás na eficiência de remoção de inclusões. No presente trabalho, foi usado um modelo físico construído em escala 1:3 de um distribuidor industrial de 40 toneladas de capacidade nominal, para analisar o efeito da injeção de gás. Os experimentos incluíram contagem on-line de partículas pela sonda APS III e análise de curvas DTR. O resultado mostrou que a injeção de gás é benéfica à remoção de inclusões e que a análise pura dos volumes característicos, calculados a partir das curvas DTR, não é suficiente para avaliar a eficiência de remoção.

An experimental and numerical study was conducted on the geomechanical behaviour of oil sands during penetration tests in which a steel wedge with an apex angle of either 20 degrees or 30 degrees was forced into compacted oil sands. The boundary conditions simulated in the laboratory tests are similar to shovel penetration into oil sands. The objective of the laboratory tests was to measure the force required to push a steel wedge into compacted oil sands. A wedge penetration test differs from conventional triaxial tests in that much more shear is generated. The laboratory data was needed to improve calibration of micro-mechanical input parameters for a two-dimensional discrete element model of oil sands constructed with Particle Flow Code (PFC). Initial model calibration was performed with triaxial test data and then a PFC model of the wedge penetration test was constructed. The measured force-displacement behaviour of the steel wedge was compared with PFC modelling results. It was found that different combinations of PFC particle and bond parameters could equally well replicate the laboratory triaxial compression data for bitumen-rich oil sands. When the wedge model was run, it was found that the resulting force required to penetrate the wedge into the oil sands was about four to six times higher than that measured. This clearly indicates that further research is required to improve the predictive capability of PFC models of oil sands.

A study was conducted to evaluate the applicability of large wheel loaders (Cat 994 class) as primary loading equipment in open pit iron ore operations. Field visits were made to taconite and gold mines that used large wheel loaders. Data were gathered on loader selection rationale; operating and maintenance experience; and production, availability, and cost information. Brief time studies were conducted to indicate machine performance and utilization. The paper summarizes the field data and includes economic comparisons of wheel loaders versus cable shovels in an iron ore application.

Foram estudadas as cinéticas de oxidação a altas temperaturas ao ar de um aço inoxidável austenítico laminado e de quatro juntas soldadas produzidas através do processo MIG/MAG com diferentes gases de proteção, dentro de um projeto que visava estudar o comportamento de juntas soldadas de aços inoxidáveis austeníticos a altas temperaturas. Utilizou-se o metal base 253MA, o consumível de soldagem 22.12.HT e diferentes concentrações de gases de proteção: 100% Ar, Ar + 2% CO2, Ar +4% CO2 e Ar + 20% CO2. Para cada mistura gasosa, foi soldado um corpo de prova. Observou-se aumento no teor de carbono e consequente diminuição da resistência à oxidação a altas temperaturas ao ar nas juntas soldadas com gases de proteção com maiores concentrações de CO2.

"INTRODUCTION As virtually no published data are available on the sintering of fine, minus-100-mesh, ferrograde manganese ores, it is most opportune to present data on the amenability of various fine ores and mill products to the sintering process. These data cover the sintering or nodulizing of finely crushed, high-grade pyrolusite and rhodochrosite ores, sintering of manganese carbonate flotation concentrate, sintering or nodulizing the calcine from the deleading of a manganese oxide flotation concentrate, and sintering the calcines made in a Herreshoff furnace from the treatment of manganese sulfate products.If finely sized products are to be smelted in the present electric or blast ferromanganese furnaces, they must be sintered or nodulized. The only specification as to the size of the sintered or nodulized product is that it must pass a 6-inch screen and not contain over 1t-1/2 percent minus 20-mesh material. The minimum-maximum size has not been established. Undoubtedly this opti mum size will be set by the ferromanganese industry when ample quantities of manganese oxide sinters have been smelted."

A method of monitoring roof stability in underground mines by detecting the changes in resistivity of roof material was tested. The device built by the USBM was tested over a 16 month period at the White Pine Copper Mine in White Pine, Michigan. Three falls of ground were monitored by means of as many as 11 sensors. Data indicate a correlation between changes in resistivity and impending structural failure. Problems were encountered with the high roof electrode impedance in the winter and spring due to the drying out of the roof material. Difficulties also developed in obtaining a permanent bond between the roof rock, the conductive epoxy and the electrode plate. Some data were lost due to timer and fuse problems within the unit. These were eventually rectified.

China’s land area, comparable in size to United States or Canada, contains diverse geological environments and mineral resource potential. The diversity in geological environments is such that the potential for developing many world-class mineral deposits in China is good. However, China’s mining sector was not open to foreign investment until the1990s. The long-term prospect for Chinese resource development is attractive because of China’s enormous population and cumulative demand for minerals. Approximately 33 foreign mineral companies, including 11 major internationals, are to various degrees active in China. Chinese mining laws and regulations pertaining to joint ventures with foreign companies are, from the international investment prospective, evolving slowly, but positively. This positive trend is continuing under the current government reform process, which is moving China towards a freer market economy. Although improving the enforcement of relevant laws and regulations is an ongoing process, the environment for mineral investment and joint ventures is increasingly more accommodating to foreign companies.

The United States Bureau of Mines contracted Norecol to prepare a report identifying the regulatory processes associated with metal mine development in British Columbia using the Snip Mine as a case study. The intent of this study is to assist industry and regulatory agencies in developing understanding as to differences in objectives, perspectives and operating methods. The case study will be incorporated into a larger report summarizing the comparative advantages and disadvantages of metal mine permitting in British Columbia and Alaska. The purpose of the report is to identify the development schedule and permitting process at Snip which will assist the U.S. Bureau of Mines in suggesting improvements in environmental review and permitting processes for mine developments. The report provides an abstract of the environmental assessment review processes in Canada and the Mine Development Review Process in British Columbia and provides an understanding of the linkages between policy, legislation, and environmental review.

"In recent years, the mining industry has been inundated with new technologies and software systems to aid in productivity improvement. Accompanying this increased level of technology and computer systems has been the exponential growth in data sources and sinks for all aspects of a mining operation. This rapid growth in data and technology has evolved through vendor “push” approaches and user “pull” scenarios, the result of which has been that currently, no standards exist defining how data from new technology should be accessed and transferred from surface mining equipment and systems. Consequently, many incremental benefits of the systems have not been realized. This paper will present a discussion of this important issue and introduce a new committee formed to address standards to assist the industry in making effective use of current and future technology. Potential benefits accruing from the development of these standards will be illustrated through the use of a case study at Fording Coal Limited. IntroductionThe mining industry is currently faced with a rapid evolution in the computing-based systems capabilities of mobile production equipment. At the same time, there is a trend toward the introduction of even larger machines, with novel designs or incorporation of new technologies within existing designs. Computing and control technology will be required to operate and acquire knowledge about equipment operation, utilization, and performance. Such knowledge has the potential to lead to enhanced equipment design, more appropriate equipment selection, and optimized equipment performance. The equipment systems will be required to be integrated with mine production monitoring systems, maintenance management software, and a wealth of other information systems to provide a complete understanding of the effects of various factors such as maintenance, equipment design and production on economics (Roman and Daneshmend, 2001). This will lead to a better understanding and implementation of the opportunities to enhance the performance of the mine through interaction of the mine operations."

O presente trabalho tem por objetivo apresentar alguns exemplos de aplicações na Indústria Siderúrgica e de Mineração (Prensa de Rolos e Torre de Resfriamento) mostrando que com o emprego de uma confiável metodologia para determinação dos benefícios energéticos é possível a implantação das medidas de conservação de energia em sistemas de força motriz instalados nestas indústrias com o simples uso de Lubrificantes Sintéticos Especiais em substituição ao largo emprego de óleos minerais. Esta solução também proporciona ganhos energéticos e financeiros expressivos e mais atrativos do que as já consagradas soluções de eficiência energética como troca de lâmpadas e /ou motores de alto rendimento. Além do mais, a troca de lubrificante já é rotina implementada nas indústrias e seus profissionais da área de manutenção, não sendo preciso treinamento adicional para implementação, tornando esta ação com o propósito de economizar energia simples e fácil de ser implementada. Within the scope the collaborative research centre 599 (Medical University of Hanover, University of Veterinary Medicine Hanover, University of Hanover) the behaviour of the degradation of magnesium materials as implants are investigated by using animal experiments (rabbits). Thus extruded cylindrical pins from the magnesium alloys MgCa0.8%, WE43 and LAE 442 were implanted intramedullary in the tibiadiaphyses. The implantation duration was 3 and 6 month. After the explantation 3 point bending tests were carried out to investigate the possible changes of the mechanical properties. Clearly changes in dependence of the implantation duration could be determined. The three magnesium alloys show a decrease of the mechanical resistance with an increasing implantation time. To evaluate the degradation process, wich is the reason for the changes, micrographs and element analyses (EDX) have been accomplished after the 3 point bending tests. The micrographs show for all used magnesium alloys corroded surfaces but no preferred corrosion on the grain boundarys. The element analyses show beside a layer which is rich in calcium and phosphorus an agglomeration of rare earth elements in this layer. With these results a using of magnesium alloys as a material for implants can be announced.

A produção de aço com baixo teor de enxofre é de extrema importância para a indústria naval e de tubos para a indústria de petróleo. Porém, a fabricação destes aços acarreta um maior desgaste do revestimento refratário das panelas de transporte/tratamento de aço das aciarias devido às condições operacionais mais severas (maiores tempos de processo, maiores temperaturas, adições de fluxantes de escória, etc.) exigidas durante o processamento destes aços. Neste trabalho é apresentado o modelamento estatístico do impacto da fabricação deste tipo de aço, via rota de tratamento metalúrgico de dessulfuração de aço, na campanha refrataria (vida) das panelas conjuntamente com a análise post-mortem de tijolos refratários da linha de escória de uma das panelas. O modelamento levou em consideração os dados de 6 meses de operação da aciaria de uma usina integrada com capacidade de 4,5 Mt/ano. A análise dos resultados revelou que os altos tempos de tratamento no refino secundário, especialmente utilizando o forno panela como equipamento de dessulfuração, a adição de compostos fluxantes de escórias contendo sódio, como nefelina, são os principais fatores que degradam a vida do refratário de tais panelas. The ordering reaction and its effect on dislocation awangements in alloys based on Mg3Cd has been studied by transmission electron microscopy. Ordering occurs by the growth of ordered domains until they impinge, thus producing an antiphase domain boundary (APB) network. In the disordered alloy, slip is confined to the basal plane while in the ordered condition slip occurs on the basal, prism, and pyramidal planes. Superdislocations have been identuied on these planes and their origin and expected spacings are discussed and compared with the observations. The APBs between the dislocation pairs have been resolved and have proved useful in the identification of superdislocations. Observed slip structures are related to the changes in mechanical properties produced by ordering. At high temperatures magnesium and cadmium form a continuous series of disordered hexagonal solid solutions. At lower temperatures three ordering reactions occur; two based on the compositions Mg3Cd and MgCd3 are transformations to DO19-type superlattices while alloys based on the composition MgCd transform to a B19 lattice. The ordering process in alloys near the composition Mg3Cd has been studied by several workers&apos;-4 and it has been shown to be a first-order type transformation. The variation of mechanical properties with the degree of order and temperature have been reported in some detail by Stoloff and Davies.5 It was shown that the disordered alloy was stronger and less ductile than the ordered alloy, the differences being attributed to changes in the number of active slip planes and to the presence of short-range order in the disordered alloy. In this investigation the ordering reaction has been qualitatively followed by transmission electron microscopy. The effect of this ordering transformation on the dislocation arrangements in deformed specimens has been studied in some detail. EXPERIMENTAL Alloys were melted in a stainless-steel crucible under a flux and chill cast; both melting and casting were performed in an argon atmosphere. The ingots were hot-rolled and tensile specimens cut from the resultant strips. Some large-grained specimens were grown by the strain-anneal method. Heat treatment was carried out in inert atmosphere furnaces and in oil baths at the lower temperatures. Thin foils for transmission electron microscopy were produced by electropolishing in a cooled solution (temp = -40°C) containing 50 cu cm of nitric acid and 180 cu cm of methanol at a potential of 10 v. The ordering reaction was followed by transmission electron microscopy, X-ray, and electrical resistivity measurements but this paper will be concerned chiefly with the electron-microscopy results. Much of the work described in this paper was performed on an alloy containing 26.10 at. pct Cd although two of the micrographs are taken from work on a 25.55 at. pct Cd alloy. RESULTS i) The Quenched Solid Solution. Specimens which were quenched from above the critical temperature showed diffuse superlattice reflections. sark-field analysis on these reflections failed to reveal the presence of ordered domains and thus the superlattice reflections were assumed to arise from regions of short-range order. Quenching from temperatures of 400" to 450°C results in the formation of dislocation loops and helical dislocations. Such defects have been observed and analyzed in detail in several hexagonal metals6-&apos; and as the crystallography and interactions of such loops appear similar in this alloy they will not be reported in detail. INTRODUCTION Classification of coal seams as thin, medium, and thick is both subjective and relative and is more a reflection of the statistical mode of the thicknesses en- countered in a mining region. A geological factor more precisely understood as defined than thickness is the inclination of the seams to the horizontal, commonly referred to as the pitch or the dip of the seam. Thick and steeply pitching seams present far more challenges to the ingenuity of the mining men to devise methods for their extraction than the thick and less steeply inclined ones. In a marginal case, where a thick coal seam may be minable by surface or underground methods, the decision bears a close relationship to the technological developments in the mining scene. Near surface thick coal seams are a special gift of nature and are not as wide- spread as the ones that call for the application of under- ground methods. Recent advancements in surface mining equipment have made it possible to surface mine to great depths. Stripping ratios of 30: 1 (cu yd of over- burden removed per ton of coal) have been achieved. The extraction of thick seams which preclude the use of surface methods is the concern of this chapter. Specifically, the objective here is to outline the special technological factors in underground mining of thick coal seams and to illustrate through several case histories the methods that are practiced in the North American continent. For the purposes of this chapter, a thick seam is defined as one which is not readily minable with currently available equipment without modifications to the extraction method or the equipment. At the present time, a thickness of 4.8 m (16 ft) can be considered as the lower limit, although developments in equipment and methods can be expected to push this limit upwards. The data for the case histories were collected from two extended mine visits in 1975 and 1978, and from other published accounts of the mines visited. Reference is drawn particularly to reports by Bise, Ramani, and Stefanko (1976) and Rarnani and Kenzy (1979). THICK SEAM MINING METHODS The various methods of mining thick seams can generally be grouped into three major categories: full face methods, where the entire thickness of the seam is re- covered in a single pass; slicing methods, where the seam is extracted to its full thickness by horizontal or inclined slices either in an ascending or descending order; and caving methods, where the seam is undercut and the en- tire coal seam is recovered by caving the top coal into the excavated cut, or some variations of the basic sub- level caving method. As shown in Table 1, in each of these methods, the coal is removed by either room-and-pillar or longwall methods. Hydraulic mining and transport of the coal in open flumes or in pipelines are also practiced. Addition- ally, the void created by the removal of coal may be filled with a packing material (stowing) except in the caving methods. The pitch (dip) of the seam, particularly when it is greater than 0.26 rad (150), imposes severe operational limitations on mobile equipment. A more detailed general discussion of the methods can be found in Bise et al. (1976) and Vorobjev and Deshmukh (1964). INTRODUCTION Conveyor belt fires represent a serious hazard in underground mines. This fact is well understood in most mining countries. The statistical data for Ontario mines (1) indicates that the majority of the conveyor fires occurred at the head pulley of the conveyor belt. The main emphasis for fire prevention and detection should then be concentrated at the drive pulley of the conveyor designed to transport non-combustible material. In the case of conveyor belt fires, it is of utmost importance to detect the hazard at an early stage, when the overheating has not yet reached the ignition point. Thermal noise detection sensors were installed in 1987 at several conveyor sites at Inco mines. PRODUCTS OF COMBUSTION THERMAL DEGRADATION OF CONVEYOR BELT Various investigations on conveyor belt fire hazards have been made in the past (2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7). Several belt samples (6, 7) were subjected to thermal oxidative degradation. The belts used in these tests were neoprene, polyvinyl chloride and styrene-butadiene rubber (6). About 70 different compounds were identified in the volatile thermooxidative products. As expected, hydrogen chloride was the major toxic product formed, accompanied by relatively low quantities of other toxic compounds such as carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, carbon disulfide, hydrogen sulfide, benzene, chloroprene, cresols, chloroethanol, formic acid and C8 hydrocarbons. The research investigation (8) performed by the USBM indicated that "smoldering combustibles generate a very low level of CO compared to the level of smoke produced". The cited publication (8), states that, "During smoldering combustion, typical mine combustibles produce about 2.5 times more smoke than CO. As fires develop to their flaming stages, the trend reverses and about eight times as much CO is produced as smoke." The reader is referred to several significant sources of additional information pertaining to emission products that can be found in references (8), (9), and (10). ANALYSIS OF FIRE HAZARDS U.S.A. AND ENGLAND Nearly 15 percent of all underground coal mine fires in the United States involved ignition of conveyor belts (7). In many cases, the fires propagated through thousands of feet of belt entry and created losses in the millions of dollars. Some of these fires consisted of rubber belts. Some involved polyvinyl chloride and neoprene belts that were classified "fire resistant". Typically, a belt fire begins after the conveyor is stopped. The fire is initiated by burning coal dust and grease accumulation around defective rollers or belt drives that have become heated by friction (7). An analysis of 113 conveyor fires (11) showed that 41 originated at the driving pulleys, 32 at the defective rollers, and 40 elsewhere on the conveyor system. The severity of the fire, which can spread along a conveyor road, has been emphasized by the disaster at Creswell Colliery, Derbyshire, on September 26, 1950, when 80 men were overcome and killed by toxic fumes from the fire (12). With the destruction of the US-90 Bridge spanning St. Louis Bay by Hurricane Katrina, the State of Mississippi awarded its first major design-build contract in order to have a completed four-lane bridge in a period of less than two years. The structure consists of 76 pre-cast concrete beam spans with a total bridge length from Bent 1 to Bent 77 of 11,124 ft (2.1 miles). All 77 bents are founded on pre-cast, pre-stressed concrete piles and consist of two foundation types: pile bents and water line footings. A total of 53 pile bents were utilized where the deck is less than 52 ft above the water. Further divided, 10 pile bents, supported by 24 in. square, solid piles, are located on land. The remainder of the pile bents are located within St. Louis Bay and supported by 36 in. square, voided piles. All the waterline footings are supported by 30 in. square, voided piles. In total, 138 -24 in., 437 -30 in., and 463 -36 in. piles support the structure. Production pile design was based upon information gathered from the subsurface investigation, design soil profile and 23 out-of-position test piles. Verification of the design was established by monitoring the first production pile driven at each bent using the Pile Driving Analyzer. Particular challenges included highly variable coastal deposits, loads in excess of 1600 kips per pile and a compressed construction schedule. Initial drive capacity of a portion of the production test piles was less than expected resulting in a minimum 14 day setup. Following the setup period, restrikes were necessary to verify capacity. Project production piles ranging from 50 ft in length to in excess of 160 ft in length were used to achieve the required resistance. This paper includes a brief overview of the foundation design and indicator test pile program. The main objective is to provide a summary of the quality control procedures including establishing the driving criteria for each bent and to present issues that arose during production pile driving and the solutions that followed.

Based on our finding that commercial copper chelating solvent extractants such as LIX65N® and LIX63® are excellent collectors for copper minerals, a detailed study was made using several water-soluble chelating agents belonging to the class of aromatic hydroxyoximes and having a gradual structural variation. A basic study of the system salicylaldoxime-tenorite was also carried out. Microflotation tests as a function of concentration of oxime, pH, addition of copper etc., using oxidic copper minerals such as chrysocolla and tenorite, and batch laboratory flotation tests using synthetic mixtures of quartz and oxidic copper minerals were carried out. The studies were aimed at an understanding of the collector function of the hydroxyoximes and of the general flotation behavior in these systems, in addition to studying the structural aspects of oximes vis-a-vis flotation. The results have demonstrated that all of the hydroxyoximes studied here have comparable collector property, and in all cases the oxime was found to be partitioned between the mineral surface and the copper in the bulk aqueous phase in the form of a bulk copper chelate. The occurrence of the latter could be accounted for by the formation in the bulk phase of a chelate between oxime and copper released from the mineral and/or by the detachment of the surface chelate. The role of surface and bulk chelates in flotation is discussed based on the results of partitioning of chelating agent into bulk and surface chelates in the system salicylaldoximetenorite. The effect of substitution of CH2 groups or benzene ring in the chelating agent molecule on its collector property is also discussed, in addition to the finding that only the anti-isomer has the ability to collect.
