MR. CHAIRMAN, Members of the C.I.M., and Friends -particularly friends, because I am not entirely a stranger in your city. I was last here some five years ago and it has given me a great deal of pleasure this evening to be able to say "Hello" again to those I had met at that time, when Bourlamaque and V al d'Or were very busy centres of intensive and successful gold exploration. My remarks this evening have to .do with Canada's Place in the Atomic Age. They will be of a general nature but I hope to tell you ?enough to whet your appetite so that you may be provoked into per-.suing the subject further. Now, atomic developments have become quite commonplace. Words like radioactivity, reactors, nuclear fission, and so on are known to everyone, even the youngsters. I re-member two or three years ago one of my office boys came to me and said "Mr. Joubin, I would like a raise." I gave the request a few seconds of serious thought and finally said "Alright, Jimmy, we'll give you a raise." However, he made no effort to leave, so after a -couple of seconds more I said, "Is there something else ?" and he said "Yes, Mr. Joubin, could you make that raise 'radioactive' to the first .of the year ?"

"A laboratory study was undertaken to determine the condensed equilibrium phase relations at 600°C in that portion of the quaternary Fe-Ni-Cu-S system which lies in the neighbourhood of the monosulphide solid solution (MSS). The study sought to determine to w hat extent copper affects the temperatures of stability and compositions of iron-nickel sulphides in bulk compositions similar to those of massive Fe-Ni-Cu ores. Experimental data, including stable phase assemblages and phase compositions, are presented.In the quaternary system at 600°C MSS forms stable phase assemblages with pentlandite, chalcopyrite solid solution, pyrite and vaesite. Over the range of bulk compositions displayed by natural ores copper as well as metal/sulphur ratio have a significant effect on the thermal stability of pyrite and pentlandite. Errors therefore accompany the widespread practice of ignoring copper or chalcopyrite when the mineralogical and compositional changes that have accompanied the initial cooling of primary magmatic sulphides or their subsequent homogenization during isochemical metamorphism are being deciphered. These errors are most significant for ores the bulk compositions of which lie tow ard the sulphur-deficient side of the cupriferous MSS. Temperatures as much as 300°C above the copper-absent value are possible for the interpreted upper stability limits of pentlandite in these ores.The experimental data show that up to 2.0 at% copper can occur in pentlandite stable at 600°C in a bulk composition equivalent to natural magmatic ores. This is equivalent to nearly 10 vol% chalcopyrite. Pentlandite contains more copper than coexisting MSS and the copper content of both phases increases with increasing iron."

It is a well-known industry fact that many mine sites around the globe experience blast holes that have elevated temperatures due to reactive ground, geochemical reactions, geomorphic reactions, sub level open fires, etc. It has been reported in many previous industry publications (White, Saputra et al) that elevated blast hole temperatures are a norm at many mine sites and are dealt with on an ongoing basis while the drill and blast process continues under elevated states of alert. The choice of explosives products including the type of detonator, primer, accessory, and bulk product all must be taken into consideration when loading blast holes where there is a known potential for elevated temperature conditions. It should also be noted that these elevated temperatures inside blast holes can be consistent throughout the blast hole length or vary in position within the blast hole depending on the mine conditions mentioned in the opening statement above. The risks associated with the loading of primers and bulk explosives in holes where elevated temperatures are present include: the ejection of the bulk explosives product, deflagration of the explosives during initiation of the blast or premature and uncontrolled initiation of a blast hole(s). This paper describes a unique and novel approach to the active monitoring of the temperature within blast holes with the application of electronic detonators with integrated temperature measuring (ITM) capabilities, deployed and demonstrated at a mine site in Mexico during January 2023 to March 2023. The deployment of ITM capable electronic detonators allows a user to monitor and record the real time temperature at multiple locations (e.g., toe, middle and collar) at each electronic detonator’s position within the blast hole, with the ability to react instantaneously to elevations in temperature reported. The measurement of the temperature can be for a single ITM electronic detonator, or simultaneous for an array of ITM electronic detonators, allowing for the potential for the data to be represented by a time/temperature/hole depth three-dimensional heat map. Changes in temperature at different borehole positions can vary, however, often the collar position is expected to be the most reactive due the combination of bulk explosive product and oxygen exposure, which can be confirmed with the application of the ITM electronic detonators. A mine site’s reaction to a measured elevated temperature within a blast hole can vary depending on the temperature measured and the change in temperature from the last measurement made. The study was found to produce real-time in-hole temperature information which was previously unobtainable without the introduction of another device. New and adaptive elevated temperature hole policies can be created and adapted proactively as real time information is received, leading to a safer mining operation.

Based on the simple-beam theory, a stress analysis model was established for undermining in multiple seam strip-pillar mining when the strip pillars were not columnized; the effects of various mining factors (e.g., mining depth, inter-burden thickness, recovery ratio, etc.) on inter-burden stability were analyzed; the changes in inter-burden stress distribution were investigated; and the important role that the inter-burden spacing and the mining width of the lower seams on inter-burden stability was studied. Finally, the actual practice used in Feng Feng Mine area was used as an example to demonstrate the rational mining width for a fixed mining depth.

Large is the applicable adjective here. The largest hydraulic shovel in the world, the largest copper mine in the world, the largest copper producing company in the world. The O&K RH 300 hydraulic excavator has been put into service to move overburden and mine ore at the Chuquicamata open pit mine of the Chilean state copper mining company, Corporation Nacional de Corbre de Chile (Codelco). A large shovel: Equipped with a 26-m3 (34-yd') rock shovel, the RH 300 is able to fill a 170-t (187-st) truck in three passes with cycle times of 30 seconds. A large mine: At present, the Chuquicamata pit is 4 km (2.5 miles) long, 2 km (1.2 miles) wide, and 520 m (1700 ft) deep from rim to bottom bench. The current 450 kt/d (496,000 stpd) of material mined will increase to 600 kt/d (661,000 stpd) when the expanded production rate is reached in 1989. (Chuqui Expansion details, p. 20). A large mining company: Codelco's total output from its two open pit and three underground copper mines is more than 1.1 Mt/a (1.2 million stpy) of copper. This makes Codelco by far the largest copper producer in the world. It accounts for about 15% of the Western World's copper requirements. Chuquicamata is located in the hot and arid Atacama desert of northern Chile. The mine is located 240 km (150 miles) northeast of the port city of Antofagasta. Mine elevation is 2700 m (8850 ft). Chuquicamata's known reserves of oxide and sulfide ores amount to more than 450 Mt (496 million st) of contained copper. There are also reserves of more then 1.4 Mt (1.5 million st) of contained molybdenum. Originally, Chuquicamata was a rail pit. The shovels loaded rail cars hauled by locis on tracks along the benches. During the 1970s, the rail transport was replaced by truck haulage. Crushing and conveying rock waste in the pit is the latest step in the continuing evolution of more productive and economical methods of materials movement. In 1990, the in-pit crushing plant will be in operation. The waste will be mainly transported out of the pit on belt conveyors rather than trucks. The system will incorporate a 9.6-kt/h (10,600-stph) semi-portable crushing station, a 14-km (8.7-mile) conveyor using 1.8 m (6 ft) wide heavy duty belts, and a tripper-spreader to stack the waste dumps. Since Chuqui went into production in 1915, more than 2.5 Gt (2.8 billion st) of material has been excavated. This includes nearly 1.7 Gt (1.9 billion st) of ore from which some 16.4 Mt (18 million st) of copper has been recovered. The Chuquicamata porphyry type ore body is an altered and fractured intrusive granodiorite or quartz-monzonite porphyry that carries the mineralization. The action of ground water on primary sulfide minerals in geo¬logic time has created oxide ores and a zone of secondary enrich¬ment. The oxides occur above the sulfide zone and are also mixed with the upper parts of the latter. At Chuquicamata, the current grade of 1.5% copper is expected to decline to about 1% by 1995. THIS is a progress report of an experiment being undertaken in cooperation with the Bethlehem Steel Corp., the Crucible Steel Co., and the Rock Bit Sales and Service Co., involving heat treatment of the shank ends of drill steel. This experiment is being conducted by the U. S. Bureau of Mines in its experimental mine, Mining Research Branch, Bluemont, Va. The purpose of the experiment is to determine the effect of an increase in the time the steel soaks in the furnace during the hardening heat. It has been thought that increasing this time produces a soft zone below the lugs resulting in a metallurgical notch that causes early failure. Each of the steel companies furnished enough 11/4 - in. straight carbon, hollow, round steel to make up 10 sets of drill steel, in each instance the steel bars were from the same heat. These sets of drill steel, consisting of 2-ft, 4-ft, 6-ft, and 8-ft lengths were fabricated by the Rock Bit Sales and Service Co. Special attention was given to the forging of the steel to produce the best rods possible. The heat treatment of all thread ends was identical and followed the best practice. The heat treatment of the shank ends of five sets of steel from each company produced a soft zone 2 to 4 in. in front of the lugs. It was decided that possibly the best way to obtain this effect was not to overlap the hardening heat but to let the steel soak for an additional 30 min before quenching. Therefore the only variable in the test steels is the length of time the shank ends were in the furnace. The remaining drill steel shanks were treated as follows: Heat treatment in pyrometer-controlled furnace at 1550°F. Quenching oil at 105°F to 125°F temperature. Areas for heat treatment were; shanks, 11 in.; threads, 9 in. Time at heat, standard practice, 20 min for 11/4-in. steel. Actual drilling tests were made in greenstone, (a metamorphosed basaltic rock), and in epidosite. Greenstone has a specific gravity of 2.96 and a compressive strength of 44,200 psi. Epidosite has a specific gravity of 3.26 and a compressive strength of 63,100 psi. All drilling tests were made using a 31/2-in. column-mounted, automatic feed drifter, with a controlled air pressure of 90 psi at the throttle. Tungsten-carbide bits of 2 in. diameter were used for all drilling. Contrary to expectations the drill steels that were allowed to soak for the additional 30 min before quenching performed better than the steels that were heat treated according to standard practice. This performance, as shown in Table I, was especially noticeable in the drilling of epidosite. The "longheat" drill steels furnished by Company "A" drilled 154 pct more minutes than the "standard-heat" steel. Expressed in feet, the "long-heat" steel drilled 114.60 ft more before failure than the "standard-heat" steel. The "long-heat" steel furnished by Company "B" drilled 37 pet more minutes or 60.39 ft more before failure than the "standard-heat" drill steel. The effect of the long heat treatment was not as evident when the steels were drilling in greenstone (Table II). In greenstone, the increase in minutes drilled by the "long-heat" steel over the "standard-heat" steel was 47 pet and 1 pet, respectively, for Companies "A" and "B."

While coal occurs beneath about 18 percent of Utah, only 4 percent of the state has minable reserves. Utah's coal fields are mostly bituminous. Current coal production in Utah is largely by underground mining, making Utah unique among the coal-producing states. Most coal seams are more than 8 feet thick. Utah's coal resources are about 6.3 billion tons, 1.3 percent of the national reserve. Most of Utah's coal resources are held by the Federal Government and Indian tribes and are mined under lease. The climate of the Utah coal region is characterized by hot, dry summers and cold, relatively moist winters. Normal precipition varies from 6 inches in the lower valleys to more than 40 inches on some high plateaus. The growing season ranges from 5 months in some valleys to less than 3 months in mountainous regions. These extreme climatic conditions make reclamation difficult. Utah gained primacy when its regulatory program was conditionally approved January 21, 1981. Full program approval was obtained March 7, 1983. The Abandoned Mine Land Program was approved June 3,1983. A Federal Lands Cooperative Agreement was signed in March 1987; Utah performs all enforcement activities and some permitting activities on federal lands.

For shortwall mining to be profitable, the additional capital investment of about $1 million for shortwall roof supports must be offset by decreased total operating costs and/or increased coal production. The Bureau of Mines therefore conducted a demonstration project to compare shortwall and room-and-pillar mining. Daily two-shift production from the bureau of Mines-Beth-Elkhorn Corp. shortwall demonstration n project averaged 975 tons of raw coal, compared with 905 tons from a room-and-pillar unit operating undo r similar conditions. The estimated direct operating costs for the shortwall and room-and-pillar unite were $4.21 and $4.03 pier ton, respectively. The profitability of the shortwall system was found to depend not only on the increased depreciation cost of the powered roof supports and the decreased cost of supplies and materials but also on such factors as the fixed and variable indirect costs and the selling price of the coal. Shortwall mining was demonstrated to be a viable alternative to room-and-pillar mining.

Modern underground mines operate fleets of mobile production equipment including drill jumbos, long-hole drills, load-haul-dump machines, trucks and bolters. Their availability has a substantial impact onto production cost and thus onto mine profitability. Through appropriate collection of pertinent data and information, use of adequate performance measures and their analyses, mine operators can identify the most promising and cost effective opportunities to get more from their equipment and to reduce the overall cost. This paper presents results of the study aimed to review and analyse means and measures used to quantify equipment availability and its contributing factors (reliability, maintainability and maintenance support) in several Canadian underground mines. It overviews current reporting procedures, sources, quality and quantity of the data and information collected as well as examines performance measures and their definitions used by the surveyed mines. Problems concerning data acquisition as well as meaningfulness and usefulness of the above mentioned metrics are also discussed. The paper concludes with some suggestions and recommendations concerning several aspects of equipment availability assessment. It is believed that the latter may become a more useful tool for mine operators in their efforts to reduce production cost than it seems to be the case at present.

Of the several possible causes considered, the swelling is attributed to the physical surface action of water on gouge and flaky rocks at the periphery of the mine opening.

O mercado siderúrgico atual encontra-se cada vez mais competitivo e exige das empresas esforços na diminuição do custo de produção para que seus produtos mantenham atratividade no cenário global. A incorporação crescente de produtos siderúrgicos oriundos da Ásia no mercado ocidental obriga as indústrias encontrarem alternativas de diminuição de custo de produção, as rotas para que tal objetivo seja alcançado geralmente estão ligadas ao aumento do rendimento metálico e diminuição no tempo de processamento dos produtos. O equipamento gargalo na linha de laminação a quente da CSN, é a cadeira reversível da laminação de desbaste, R2, e pequenas reduções de tempo no processamento de placas são responsáveis por incrementos elevados na produtividade da laminação. Visando ampliar a competitividade da CSN no cenário siderúrgico foi criada uma função, chamada RM-NECK, no modelo matemático do laminador que classifica todos os materiais gargalo desbaste por grau, espessura, largura, número de fornos de reaquecimento e comprimento de placa, permitindo assim, a diminuição no tempo de processamento na zona do VE2/R2. O estudo evoluiu para um verdadeiro trabalho em equipe, envolvendo especialistas da manutenção e operação e, consolidando anos de experiência no desenvolvimento de um algorítmo inteligente o suficiente para reduzir o tempo de processo observando os princípios da teoria das restrições.

Consumption of abrasive materials in the United States increased 22% in value over that of 1982 to $320 million; of which, 59% was manufactured abrasive, 35% was industrial diamond (natural and synthetic), and 6% was natural abrasive. Production value of natural abrasives, excluding industrial diamond, remained virtually unchanged. Production of crude tripol, a porous siliceous rock, decreased slightly; however, shipments of processed tripoli increased 13% in quantity and 32% in value. Production of garnet, an abundant iron-aluminum silicate, continued to increase primarily because of further increases in production from one plant that had completed an expansion program in late 1981. Production of special silica stone, both crude and finished, decreased in 1983 because of reduced demand for oilstones

The Minera Yanacocha operation presents various operating challenges, due to the complex structure of several heaps interconnected with ponds and gold recovery plants. A comprehensive process model has been developed in order to better understand the effects of certain operating parameters on issues such as water usage and inventory. An integral component of the water/mass balance of the process is a model of each heap that describes the flow and chemical behavior based on the individual characteristics of the heap. A computational fluid dynamic (CFD) software framework is used to model the individual heaps. The structure, calibration and validation of the model are described. Several examples demonstrating application of the process heap model are presented for the La Quinua heap. The effects of loss of solution flow to the heap (i.e., pump failure), increased cyanide levels in applied solutions and higher copper head grades on the process operation and balance are investigated with model simulations and compared to the baseline operating conditions. An example of estimating gold production and inventory based on projected heap loading plans is provided.

Mining companies and operations across the globe typically target best practice financial management, along with a focus on economically driven mine plans. Not only is this inherent in running a successful mining business, but also critical in addressing investor scrutiny. The standards for social and environmental practices is less consistent than this, with most companies adopting standards that are driven through legislative and compliance requirements of the nations in which they operate. Although there is still room for improvement, Australian is a country that stands at the forefront of social and environmental legislation, driving more sustainable planning practices for mining operations, with an ever-increasing focus on mine closure considerations. Of the many nations yet to reach such a legislative position, Kazakhstan is a place where some companies are driving towards world class standards beyond what is government mandated. O processo de pelotização foi desenvolvido com a finalidade de aproveitar as partículas finas e ultrafinas geradas nas operações de exploração e tratamento do minério de ferro. Os principais minérios que alimentam as usinas de Pelotização de Tubarão/Vitória/ES são provenientes das minas Brucutu, Fábrica Nova, Alegria, Conceição e Cauê. Os estudos de caracterização mineralógica e testes tecnológicos são realizados para auxiliar o processamento de minérios. Entretanto, alguns minérios possuem grande variabilidade de participação de minerais em sua composição, gerando necessidade de ajustes no processamento dos mesmos. Ter a previsibilidade mineralógica dos minérios é muito importante para atuar no processo com antecedência, realizando ajustes operacionais caso necessário, a fim de ganhar qualidade e reduzir custos. O método de cálculo normativo mineralógico é uma técnica nova que utiliza os resultados de análise química como base para quantificar minerais presentes no minério de ferro. O objetivo principal deste trabalho foi avaliar a aplicabilidade da metodologia de cálculo mineralógico normativo por meio de correlação com a microscopia ótica. As amostras analisadas foram pellet feed das minas de Fábrica Nova, Alegria e Brucutu. O estudo mostrou que existem diferenças entre as técnicas, entretanto os resultados foram promissores e satisfatórios.

O presente trabalho buscou explorar a aplicação da ultramicrodureza instrumentada na caracterização microestrutural e mecânica de materiais metálicos aço inoxidável 304L e liga NiTi Rica em Ni, ambos no campo austenítico. Para isso foi utilizado um ultramicrodurômetro instrumentado (Shimadzu, modelo DUH–211S) com medidas a temperatura ambiente e distintas cargas máximas e tempos de permanência. De acordo com algumas das possibilidades apresentadas, pode-se concluir que a ultramicrodureza instrumentada é uma ferramenta poderosa para a caracterização mecânica correlacionada aos aspectos microestruturais de materiais metálicos.

O desenvolvimento de estruturas com dimensionamento confiável requer o monitoramento de seus materiais, entretanto alguns processos de fabricação muitas vezes induzem modificações em seu comportamento mecânico. Isso faz com que as estruturas sejam menos confiáveis podendo causar redução da vida útil. Um dos processos onde isso acontece é a soldagem. Seu aporte térmico, modifica a microestrutura do material de tal forma a gerar três regiões mecanicamente distintas na junta soldada: Metal de Solda (MS), Zona Afetada pelo Calor (ZAC) e Metal de Base (MB), fazendo com que haja concentração de tensão na região afetada. Este trabalho se deteve em analisar o comportamento mecânico de uma junta soldada de aço inoxidável AISI 304 em comparação com o mesmo material não-soldado através da identificação dos gradientes de deformação, utilizando da Correlação Digital de Imagens (CDI) aplicada ao ensaio de tração. Os resultados provaram a capacidade da técnica de CDI em identificar campos de deformação mesmo em materiais anisotrópicos, como uma junta soldada.

The performances of ten field-scale experimental final covers were evaluated over an eight-year period. The covers were evaluated as part of the rehabilitation of acid generating coarse coal reject dumps and opencast coalmines in the Northern KwaZulu Natal province in South Africa. The main purpose of the experimental covers was to restrict rainfall infiltration into acid generating coal discard. The mean average rainfall over the monitoring period was 839 mm with 84 per cent occurring between October and April. The average evaporation was 2100 mm. The site is described as a ædry siteÆ since the evaporation exceeds rainfall by a significant margin. Approximately 30 per cent of rainfall infiltrated the uncovered cells. Rainfall infiltration into the fine coal discard was reduced to 20 per cent and 15 per cent for a 300 mm and 500 mm cover respectively. Infiltration was reduced to ten and 12 per cent of rainfall for fine coal discard provided with a 1000 mm double soil cover and a compacted bottom layer. This relatively high infiltration was probably caused by moisture being entrapped in the bottom retentive layer, and not being released by evapotranspiration. The best performing cover comprised 1000 mm single soil with a compacted bottom layer and infiltration was reduced to four per cent of rainfall. Rainfall infiltration into sloped cells varied between seven per cent and 14 per cent of rainfall. The computer software, SoilCover, was used to predict infiltration and moisture content in the cover. Predictions of rainfall infiltration were accurate, but were less accurate for covers where the hydraulic properties of field compacted soils were not adequately characterised. Oxygen ingress was significantly reduced for cells provided with a 1000 mm cover. Oxygen concentrations were generally below one per cent, with the exception during exceptionally dry periods when the cover dried out, resulting in increased oxygen ingress. For other covers, and the uncovered cells, oxygen concentrations were close to atmospheric concentrations. During the eight-year monitoring period, acid breakthrough occurred in five of the cells, including three uncovered cells, one cell with a 300 mm cover and one sloped cell. In contrast, cells covered with 1000 mm, bottom compacted soils shows a marked improvement of leachate quality, indicating that sulfide oxidation processes have been slowed. There was a distinct relationship between oxygen ingress and leachate quality for all of the cells. No cover degradation was evident over the eight-year period, except for some erosion observed on a sloped cell. The results indicate that the onset of acid drainage can be delayed by perhaps hundreds of years and salinity loads can be reduced by more than 90 per cent, if coarse coal reject dumps in the KwaZulu-Natal provinces in South Africa are provided by an adequate cover system. These research outcomes can be extrapolated and applied to other dry site regions where similar materials are being considered.

The use and application of shotcrete for ground support in the Asia Pacific Region is as diverse as the countries that make up this region. This paper will attempt to describe the many methods used on selected projects within that region. The project description(s) will include project logistics, equipment, mix design, products and application methods utilized along with specifications and performance results (where available). The author will attempt to reach a conclusive opinion on the success, or nonsuccess, of the various shotcrete methods employed and the development of shotcrete within the Asia Pacific Region.

"From June 16 to 19, more than 1,400 tunneling and underground construction professionals gathered in Chicago, IL for the bienial Rapid Excavation and Tunneling Conference (RETC). There, they were greeted by a full technical program and an exciting exhibit hall that provided a comprehensive look at the world’s bustling tunneling and underground construction industry.The successful conference was a reflection of the industry itself, which is to say, busy. As much of the world has begun to focus on creating a cleaner and greener environment, the global tunneling industry has seen an uptick in infrastructure projects move from design-build to construction phase. With a global shift away from the use of fossil fuels, major cities around the world are looking to increase public transportation options, which leads to the need for more transportation tunnels.
