The building is within a containment structure under a negative pressure, so that no radioactive material is leaked out to the environment. A new approach was developed to make this work possible.

The new, 2.600 m long pipe under the river Elbe in Hamburg/Germany required for 2 traffic lanes, emergency lane and space for utilities a boring diameter of 14,20 m(46,6 ft). According the geology (glacial deposits consisting of clay, sand and marl, all containing big boulders) a Slurry-Shield with crusher was selected. With a minimum cover of 7 m and a maximum pressure of 5,6 bar extensive ground treatment was necessary to make the drive feasible. The machine contains a lot of new developments. The drive was finished in spring 2000 so all experiences can be reported. A special risk sharing contract avoided completely litigation.

Laboratory and underground studies were conducted by the Bureau of Mines to evaluate the effectiveness of a water-powered scrubber and a brattice partition to create a clean split of air for longwall workers at the tailgate. In simulated laboratory tests, the system was very effective in creating a clean split of air. Observed system efficiencies were 74 and 84 pct with induced airflows of approximately 2,000 and 2,500 cfm, respectively. Underground evaluations indicated that the system was capable of reducing respirable dust at the tailgate. The first underground evaluation resulted in protection efficiencies of 30.7 and 42.5 pct at scrubber water pressures of 150 and 450 psig, respectively. A 33.7-pct protection efficiency was observed in the second underground evaluation with a modified partition and the scrubber operating at 250-psig water pressure. To be most effective, the system should have the scrubber operating at a flowrate of 10 gpm at 500 psig to deliver a maximum quantity of cleaned air behind a well-sealed partition.

"Higher production demands across all bulk handling segments require increased efficiency at the lowest cost of operation, in the safest and most effective manner possible. As conveyor systems become wider, faster and longer, more energy output and more controlled throughput will be needed. Add an increasingly stringent regulatory environment and cost-conscious plant managers must closely review which new equipment and design options align with their long-term goals for the best return on investment (ROI).There are primarily two separate market segments using conveyor belts. One is in process industries such as food, chemicals, paper and powders. Handled in relatively low volumes, the bulk materials that enter these processes are generally of a consistent size and quality. The other market includes mining, coal handling and cement, where the bulk material’s quality and size vary, and the volumes are typically much greater. While both segments face similar issues with safety and environmental control, the properties of the materials handled and the volumes transferred suggest different approaches, with one thing in common: increased belt speeds requiring modern equipment upgrades.Safety at higher belt speedsWith companies recognizing that safety does indeed pay, safety is likely to become a new source of cost reduction. The percentage of mines and processing facilities with a robust safety culture are likely to increase over the next 30 years to the point where it is the norm, not the exception. In most cases, with only a marginal adjustment to the belt speed, operators quickly discover unanticipated problems in existing equipment and workplace safety. These problems are commonly indicated by the larger volume of spillage, increased dust emissions, belt misalignment and more frequent equipment wear or failures."

Work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs) affect the wellbeing of workers and result in poor quality work, lower work performance and decreased motivation. In contrast to ‘occupational’ diseases where there is a direct cause-and-effect relationship between hazard and disease (e.g., asbestos and asbestosis, lead and lead poisoning), ‘work-related’ diseases are multifactorial, where the work environment and the type of work that is performed contribute significantly to musculoskeletal disorders. WMSD is the term used to describe disorders and diseases of the musculoskeletal system (i.e. muscles, joints, ligaments, tendons and nerves). WMSDs are by definition a work-related phenomenon. The literature shows inarguably that certain jobs and certain work-related factors are associated with a significant risk of contracting a WMSD. It is assumed that repeated movements and postures, static work, continuous loading of the tissue structures or lack of recovery time, trigger or cause a pathological process that then manifests itself as a WMSD. This paper looks at the prevalence of the WMSD condition at three mines in South Africa: a coal, a gold and a platinum mine. Predisposing factors that include work factors, presentation of symptoms and psychological factors will be discussed in the paper.

On the basis of laboratory test results a comparison of various parameters (unconfined compressive strength, CERCHAR and LCPC abrasivity indexes, mineralogy) is presented and discussed in order to outline certain correlations between them. Samples cover a wide range of lithological types coming from various sites of tunnels. "Due diligence reviews are an essential part of mineral property acquisitions. One of the primary reasons to complete an environmental review prior to exploration property acquisition is to assess the potential environmental liability. It is critical to identify the potential reclamation costs or existing environmental liability associated with the exploration property. A review of the existing condition of the property and its history can allow prioritization of exploration targets and ease future expenditures for historic damages. IntroductionIn Canada and some other jurisdictions, the purchaser of a property is assumed to know, and is (in the absence of deceit or fraud) financially responsible for, what is purchased. A plea of ignorance, at least from the perspective of environmental liability, is not an acceptable excuse to avoid responsibility (Nelson, 1994). Therefore, if an exploration company (for the purposes of this paper, any organization conducting exploration work) purchases a property that has environmental contamination, the new owner is liable for the cost to reclaim the site to an acceptable level. The cost to reclaim the site is the environmental liability. The new owner is responsible for existing environmental liability of the property, even if the exploration company’s personnel were not aware of the problem. In simplest terms, buyers beware. Therefore, in order to protect the exploration company’s interests, the exploration manager should determine the characteristics of the property of interest prior to purchase or other involvement, and exercise due diligence.The term “due diligence” is often used in the mining industry. To ensure clarity, in this paper’s context, the author has chosen to use the following meaning: “… due diligence is used to describe a detailed data review, generally in connection with the purchase or sale of a mineral property, the approval of a large capital expenditure, or the borrowing of a large sum of money” (Smith, 1997).Directors of the exploration company are held liable for the decisions made, unless they have relied in good faith on,“…a written report of the auditor, or a report of a lawyer, accountant, engineer, appraiser, or other person whose profession lends credibility to a statement made by any such person” (OBCA, 1994)."

The paper addresses five questions concerning the economic of gold exploration in the western Canadian shield. Can historical footprints be used to project future gold prices for exploration planning? Experience suggests that gold price forecast are too clo ely tied to current market events to provide meaningful guidelines. What range of breakeven gold price will typically be required to ju tify gold exploration in Canada? Minimum price requirements. initially asses ed at $540 to $1080 per ounce, probably lie in the range of $480 to $760 per ounce (expressed in 1985 Canadian dollar). Within Canada, what role do regional conditions and taxation policies play in determining the viability of prospective gold exploration targets? Striking interprovincial differences are found to exist, given the same geological circum tance -Nova Scotia, ew Brunswick, and Quebec rank towards the top in term of motivating exploration, Briti h Columbia provides the least investment incentive, while Saskatchewan and Manitoba place around the middle of the Canadian league. How can minimum acceptable tonnage-grade conditions for gold targets in the western shield be established and, then, constructively applied to provide exploration planning guidelines? Minimum target conditions, realis tically defined in terms of a broad band of doubt, can be used judiciously to help balance the direct costs of uneconomic exploration with the opportunity costs associated with rejecting economic deposits. How does the average cost per ounce of gold discovered in the western shield compare with the overall Canadian experience? Average discovery costs for the we tern shield, apprai ed at $100 per ounce, are shown to compare favourably with the Canada-wide record.

The thermochemistry of the systems SCN-H2O, Au-SCN-H2O and Ag-SCN-H2O is discussed. Potential-pH diagrams at 25°C are drawn for each system considering several sets of concentrations of the species involved. The information provided by the potential-pH diagrams is.complemented by distribution curves for each series of gold and silver complexes with thiocyanate. The analysis includes comparisons between the thiocyanate systems and the analogous cyanide systems, pointing out analogies and differences between the leaching of gold and silver with thiocyanate and with cyanide. The possibility of using soluble oxidizing agents such as ferric ions, hydrogen peroxide and Caro's acid is evaluated. The thermodynamic data used in the calculations and the chemical reactions represented in the Pourbaix diagrams are all reported in three Appendices. The overall results indicate the thermodynamic conditions for gold and silver leaching by thiocyanate.

Devido ao fato que a exigência por menores teores de enxofre em alguns tipos de aços, torna-se interessante investigar a eficiência na dessulfuração dos materiais já conhecidos com matérias primas alternativas. Duas dessas novas matérias primas que podem ser utilizadas no processo de dessulfuração são o resíduo de mármore e a sodalita. Desta forma, o presente trabalho tem como objetivo avaliar a eficiência de dessulfuração em ferro-gusa por misturas contendo resíduo de mármore, sodalita e agentes dessulfurantes convencionalmente utilizados. Os testes foram realizados a 1400°C, em uma atmosfera inerte (Ar) com agitação constante. Os testes experimentais mostraram que 50 a 90% da dessulfuração ocorreu em até 15 minutos. As misturas contendo fluorita foram os que apresentaram maior eficiência de dessulfuração. A adição de sodalita ocasionou uma queda na eficiência de dessulfuração.

This circular, which is a revision and combination of two previous publications,3 4/ presents information on the different types of equipment that may be used to analyze mine atmospheres, with particular reference to the application and limitations of each type. Such information is frequently requested by mining companies, State mining departments, and other agencies concerned with safety in mining who wish advice regarding methods of analysis of mine atmospheres and the equipment necessary for establishing laboratories for that purpose. Since the Haldane-type apparatus is particularly applicable to the accurate determination of carbon dioxide, oxygen, and combustible gases such as methane in mine atmospheres, that apparatus and the method of operation are described in detail. The circular presents results of a critical study of the accuracy attainable with the Haldane-type apparatus in the determination of methane in concentrations of the order of 0.25 percent, by volume. Analytical procedures involved in the other methods discussed are presented in publications referenced in this circular. Information is given also on the various accessory equipment needed in a laboratory for the analysis of mine atmospheres, and suggestions on laboratory design are included. Five industrial installations of large lead-acid battery energy storage systems in operation in the United States, West Germany and the 'Republic of South Africa will be described. One example is for a deep mine shaft in which air ventilation and personnel evacuation require the highest reliability for emergency power. The battery system is designed for additional cost-effective benefits of peak load lopping and reactive power control. Commercially available lead-acid batteries of the following types are in use1 traction, truck, submarine, high power, and gel. Electrode grids of both the calcium and antimony alloy types are used. Applications include deep and shallow cycling as well as float and intermittent use. The advantages of sealed lead-acid batteries in UPS (uninterruptible power source) systems are well established throughout the world, and such system suppliers could readily develop markets for industrial emergency and peak power lead-acid storage battery installations.

Water constitutes one of the most valuable resources employed in mineral recovery and processing. Identifying potential problems encountered in mineral processing in waters unusable for drinking or agriculture (including seawater and even hypersaline waters), understanding chemical factor interactions, and optimization of flotation reagents will greatly expand our ability to create more sustainable beneficiation technologies. The current paucity of our knowledgebase regarding high salinity effects on flotation clearly signals a need for a significant research effort. We report here results of a study designed to probe effects of pulp chemistry on metallurgical performance in the flotation of Cu and Cu-Mo ores in saline waters. The results clearly demonstrate that pH (more correctly dosage of pH modifier to target a pH set point) has the most significant effect on Mo recovery when using seawater. This is linked to the formation/precipitation of Mg(OH)2 when pH = 10.3 (in seawater). The type of pH modifier used, NaOH or Ca(OH)2, had no impact on Cu or Mo recovery, indicating that Ca2+ ions were not involved in any reduction in Mo recovery in the pH range of 9-11. Our results in tap water spiked with either Ca2+ or Mg2+ ions in the same pH range (controlled by NaOH), confirmed that Ca2+ ions had no effect on Cu or Mo recovery, but that addition of Mg2+ ions had a severe adverse effect on Mo recovery at pH = 9.5, and to a lesser extent on Cu recovery. The onset of Mg(OH)2 precipitation occurred at a higher pH, and the adverse impact of Mg(OH)2 on Cu recovery (and perhaps Mo recovery as well) was less, in sea water than in tap water spiked with Mg2+. These effects are attributed to the mitigating role of the high electrolyte concentration, notably NaCl.

Small and medium-sized flotation plants with no assaying instrumentation still depend much upon the art of the operator to produce acceptable and consistent results. Improved performance can be accomplished by the use of the simple microscope set up as a control device. The visual recognition of products in the circuit does much to eliminate uncertain shift operating decisions and is an easy technique to acquire. Mineral staining methods further assist in the determination of components within the mill products. Simple mounting upon scotch tape and other adhesives is rapid and convenient. The microscope also has a practical role for the plant metallurgist or laboratory technician when evaluating middling products, and their routing within the circuit. Examples are reviewed where the microscope has been used for operational control in both sulfide and nonmetallic mineral flotation plants.

The Dallas Mill Creek Drainage Relief Tunnel is an 8.04 km (5 mile) tunnel that will provide 100-year flood protection for impacted neighborhoods in the east Dallas area. “Big Tex” is a main beam gripper TBM capable of changing diameters in mid-tunnel to excavate 2.83 km (9,290 ft) of 11.45 m (37.58 ft) diameter tunnel and 5.21 km (17,095 LF) of 9.93 m (32.58 ft) diameter tunnel. Construction began in April 2018 and is anticipated to be completed in 2024. This paper will discuss the challenges and lessons learned during assembly and re-assembly, start-up and mining with “Big Tex.”

Diferentes mecanismos podem atuar e governar a deformação plástica de uma liga metálica. Estes mecanismos são fortemente dependentes de características como composição química, estrutura cristalina e energia de falha de empilhamento. Com o objetivo de se avaliar o comportamento do aço inoxidável duplex UNS S32304 quando submetido a esforços trativos e considerando a importância desta informação durante a conformação mecânica, este trabalho estudou a influência da taxa de deformação sobre as principais propriedades mecânicas medidas no ensaio de tração. Para a realização deste estudo, corpos de prova de tração foram usinados a partir de chapas do referido aço laminado a frio com espessura final de 2,5mm. Cada conjunto de 3 corpos de prova foi submetido às taxas de deformação de 7x10-4 s-1, 7x10-3 s-1 e 4x10-2 s-1. Por meio da análise dos resultados, observou-se uma diminuição na ductilidade e um aumento no limite de escoamento com o aumento da taxa de deformação. Entretanto, o limite de resistência não variou de forma significativa nas diferentes taxas estudadas.

Historically, mica usage has been low because of limited availability; as a by-product of many small processors, who have lacked motivation for extensive R & D. The discovery of a 30 million ton deposit of 85-90% pure phlogopite, when existing markets are only 300,000 tonnes annually, forced the search for large volume new markets. Increasing costs of energy, petrochemicals, plastics and glass fibers, and environmental constraints on asbestos usage, have led to new opportunities for mica as a reinforcing filler. Extensive research and developments; in beneficiating, processing and treating mica, has been necessary to satisfy these new markets.

Esse trabalho tem como objetivo apresentar a estratégia adotada para a migração dos sistemas de otimização de processo dos três Altos Fornos da ArcelorMittal Tubarão. O desenvolvimento dos novos sistemas é baseado no Plano Diretor de Tecnologia de Automação (PDTA) que definiu a arquitetura, tecnologias e elaborou o Framework como base das aplicações. Para a migração dos sistemas foi elaborada uma especificação detalhada de todos os módulos e funcionalidades existentes, permitindo dessa forma a criação de uma camada com as principais regras de negócios relativas ao processo para serem reutilizados em todos os Altos Fornos. Essa camada deu origem ao Framework dos Altos Fornos. Os resultados obtidos já podem ser vistos nos três sistemas migrados para a nova plataforma, com um alto desempenho e estabilidade, garantido dessa forma a segurança operacional objetivada.

Nickel solubilities in spent pickling solutions (i.e. HF-HNO3-H2O solutions ) were measured as a function of HF and HNO3 acid concentrations. The chemical analysis of the industrial pickling solutions and sludges were made. The stable phases observed in the sludges are FeF3?3H2O, and ( FeCr ) F3?3H2O. Pure Ni, and stainless steel type 316 were used in this study. The results showed that the solubility of Ni increased with increase in concentrations of HF in pickling solution at a fixed concentration of HNO3: An excellent agreement between the experimental solubility data and the theoretical data was obtained. X-ray diffraction analysis showed that the solid solubility product formed is mainly NiF2?4H2O compound.
