When using alternating current submerged arc welding (SAW) to produce pipes from microalloyed linepipe steels, it is critical to balance penetration depth and deposition rates, in order to minimize the number of weld passes while still maintaining good heat affected zone (HAZ) microstructures and properties. A series of bead-on-plate (BOP) submerged arc welds were performed on X70 steel, using different waveform variable settings (i.e., balance, offset and frequency). Weld bead cross-section profile deposition and penetration areas were measured, and both Vickers hardness and Charpy V-notch impact testing were performed. Both single electrode and tandem electrode welds were evaluated.

Este artigo apresenta uma ferramenta de simulação computacional desenvolvida com o objetivo de auxiliar a adoção de melhores práticas de controle do forno durante períodos sem produção. O sistema desenvolvido permite simular as temperaturas do revestimento refratário de um forno de tratamento térmico de tubos em função da evolução da temperatura da atmosfera interna em diferentes cenários. O simulador foi desenvolvido baseado em um modelo matemático dinâmico validado, que utiliza um sistema de equações de transferência de calor discretizadas. Realizou-se a validação desta ferramenta computacional com a utilização de dados reais de uma campanha de medição de temperaturas. A comparação dos resultados apresentou pequeno erro entre simulação e valores reais coletados. A utilização desta ferramenta auxiliou a definição de estratégias de controle do forno durante períodos improdutivos, possibilitando redução do consumo de energia e retomada da produção com garantia da qualidade do produto.

O presente trabalho teve como objetivo analisar as diferentes microestruturas do aço inoxidável duplex UNS S32304 obtidas pelo processo de soldagem Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW). As regiões do metal base, zona fundida e zona afetada pelo calor foram investigadas nos corpos de prova com diferentes aportes térmicos. As microestruturas obtidas foram caracterizadas utilizando-se a microscopia óptica (MO). As imagens de Mo obtidas na zona afetada pelo calor mostram que a fração de austenita aumentou com o aumento do aporte térmico. Este aumento está relacionado ao alto teor de cromo e molibdênio presentes no metal de adição utilizado na soldagem. Na zona fundida, a fração de austenita de widmansttaten foi observada com maior frequência na microestrutura do corpo de prova soldado com o aporte térmico de 1,87KJ/mm. Essa maior fração de austenita de widmansttaten observada para o aporte térmico de 1,87KJ/mm está relacionada com o maior tempo de permanência em altas temperaturas deste corpo de prova em relação aos outros corpos de prova investigados. Vale ressaltar que a adição de nitrogênio também promove a formação desta fase. De modo geral, os resultados da metalografia quantitativa mostram que a porcentagem de ferrita foi superior a 65% nas zonas termicamente afetadas e fundidas.

O trabalho apresenta estudos de cenários técnico e econômico para a implantação de uma pequena fábrica cerâmica, através do estudo de caso de uma prospecção de argila vermelha no interior do Pará. O estudo consistiu na execução de sondagem à trado (ST) na área, para cálculo volumétrico da reserva, e recolhimento de amostra para caracterizações em laboratório. A argila coletada foi submetida a análises do teor de umidade, química (Fluorescência de Raios-X) e mineralógica (Difratometria de Raios-X). Um cenário para uma empresa entre micro e pequena produtora de cerâmica foi estabelecido visando estimativas preliminares para um possível empreendimento. A análise de cenários levou a uma possibilidade de implementação de uma unidade fabril de cerâmica com capacidade produtiva de até 140 mil peças/mês. Restrições quanto ao tipo de produto desejado e a característica da argila prospectada devem ser consideradas, podendo ser necessário a mistura de argilas de base “gorda”, com maior quantidade de argilominerais.

Em virtude da periculosidade do Pó de aciaria (PAE), práticas alternativas, como a reinserção do resíduo no processo produtivo, ou sua incorporação em outros materiais fizeram com que a reciclagem tenha se tornado uma via para este subproduto. O presente trabalho tem como objetivo identificar as áreas de desenvolvimento tecnológico de utilização do PAE, avaliar a potencialidade de reaproveitamento e reciclagem do resíduo oriundo do processo de produção do aço carbono, comparando as características obtidas do PAE analisado com os requisitos indicados através da análise de patentes. O PAE produzido no estado de Pernambuco foi caracterizado pelas técnicas de Fluorescência de raios X (FRX), separação granulométrica via peneiramento, distribuição do tamanho de partículas, Difração de raios X (DRX), Microscopia eletrônica de varredura (MEV) e Espectroscopia por energia dispersiva (EDS). A prospecção tecnológica foi realizada nas bases de patentes europeia EPO e na base nacional de patentes nacional do INPI. As análises realizadas mostraram que o material apresentou aproximadamente 28,5% de suas partículas com granulometria inferior a 53μm, composto em sua maioria por ferro e zinco presentes na forma de óxidos, organizados nas fases franklinita, zincita e magnetita. A baixa granulometria e composição química possibilitam a sua aplicação no campo dos materiais cerâmicos, bem como sua reinserção no processo de fabricação. O resíduo estudado apresentou características similares com os demais resíduos observados nas patentes.

The characteristic of stope supports plays a vital role in the design of the supports. This paper deals with the characterisation of both cellular lightweight concrete and timber supports since both supports absorb and dissipate the energy in different ways. The behaviour of the support and hence its performance is simulated for different loading conditions by constructing a model consisting of various mechanical components like springs, dampers and blow-off valves. When the force exerted by the stope support increases significantly during deformation of the support, the stresses in the hangingwall could exceed values where failure of the hangingwall may occur. There is a need to understand this phenomena and the work presented in this paper is a first attempt to start with the characterisation of the stope support. Les caractéristiques des supports de taille jouent un rôle vital dans la conception des supports. L’étude présente traite de la caractérisation des supports cellulaires en béton léger et en bois, puisque ces deux types absorbent et dissipent l’énergie de façons différentes. Le comportement du support et par conséquent sa performance est simulée pour des conditions différentes de chargement en construisant un modèle qui consiste en des organes mécaniques variés tels que ressorts, registres et valves d’échappement. Quand la force exercée par le support de taille augmente considérablement pendant la déformation du support, les contraintes dans le toit peuvent dépasser des valeurs qui pourraient entraîner la défaillance du toit. Il est nécessaire de comprendre ce phénomène et l’étude ici présentée constitue un premier essai dans la caractérisation du support de taille. Die Charakteristika der Strossenunterstützung spielt im Design von Unterstützungen eine vitale Rolle. Diese Arbeit befaßt sich mit der Charaketerisierung sowohl der porösen Leichtgewichtbeton- als auch mit der Holzunterstützung, da beide Unterstützungen Energien auf verschiedene Art und Weise absorbieren und auflösen. Das Verhalten der Unterstützung und folglich seine Leistung wird für unterschiedliche Ladezustände simuliert, indem ein Model konstruiert wird, welches verschiedene mechanische Komponenten wie Federn, Dämpfer und Ausblaseventile enthält. Wenn die von Strossenunterstützung während einer Unterstützungsdeformation aufgebotene Kraft signifikant ansteigt, könnten die Spannungen im Bereiche des Stollenfirstes Werte überschreiten wo ein Versagen des Stollenfirstes eintreten kann. Es besteht die Notwendigkeit dieses Phänomen zu verstehen, und die Arbeit, die in diesem Elaborat dargestellt wird, ist ein erster Versuch, mit der Charaketerisierung der Strossenunterstützung zu beginnen.

Foram utilizadas diferentes temperaturas e tempos de encharque, e posteriormente distintos passes de redução no processo de Encruamento. As microestruturas resultantes das variações dos parâmetros de processo foram analisadas e correlacionadas com as características magnéticas obtidas por ensaio Epstein.

The CANMET Western Research Centre (CWRC) has developed a hydrocyclone model simulation of dewatering and fine particle separation circuits. The simulation is based on an existing empirical model. Utilizing a cyclone manufacturer’s published data, some modifications have been developed and integrated into the model. Feed stream characteristics, cyclone mechanical dimensions, and operating conditions are used in the CWRC modelling simulation. The computer results are presented in 3D graphs and corresponding 2D maps showing the cyclone mass recovery, percent solids by mass in underflow and overflow, and cut size as functions of the cyclone apex diameter and cyclone throughput (i.e., inlet pressure or pressure drop). Results of the computer simulation have been used in the economic feasibility and design of several dewatering circuits in oil sand plants.

Surface subsidence is becoming an increasingly important factor in the economics of mining Louisiana salt domes due to, amongst others, excessive shaft deformations and land loss to encroaching sea water. The vast majority of subsidence studies have been undertaken on bedded, tabular deposits. It is important to understand the causes of subsidence due to mining domal salt and how it can be minimized. The paper will review the major differences between subsidence caused by domal and tabular evaporite mines, the problems encountered in predicting subsidence, the factors that influence subsidence and, finally, possible alternative mining methods.

Serão comparados os nivéis de irreversibilidade dos componentes que compõem a unidade. A escolha do ciclo regenerativo com a referência em análise, é devido sua eficiência global. Isso é proporcionado através do aquecimento da água de alimentação da caldeira, com isso, consequentemente ocorre uma diminuição da necessidade de energia imposta na caldeira. A análise realizada também mostra as irreversibilidades da planta através da análise de exergia.

O presente trabalho estuda a evolução microestrutural e mecânica ao longo do processo de produção de um aço baixo carbono com micro adição de molibdênio, destinado a produção de chapas de aço dual phase galvanizadas. Para realização do estudo foi feita a caracterização microestrutural e mecânica ao longo do processo produtivo de amostras (placa, chapa laminada a quente, chapa laminada a frio “full hard”, e galvanizada) deste aço via microscopia ótica e eletrônica de varredura das amostras, avaliação da dureza via microdurômetro, do comportamento mecânico via ensaio de tração, este último somente nas amostras de chapa laminada a quente e galvanizada. Os resultados obtidos revelaram um aumento significativo na resistência mecânica do material conjugada uma alta ductilidade, devido principalmente ao refino de grão e a formação de dispersão de martensita.

Despite the recognised importance of tailings management, there remain little data on the potential benefits of biological treatments compared with physical and chemical treatments. The operation of the majority of tailings storage facilities (TSFs) continues to employ mainly physical solutions, such as sub-aerial tailings slurry deposition, with increasing adoption of thickening, paste and filtration to dewater the tailings involving the addition of chemicals such as flocculants and coagulants. However, with tailings production continuing to escalate rapidly due to the increasing demand for commodities and reducing ore grades, available technologies have not demonstrated cost-effective performance at high tailings production rates. This paper examines the emerging role of bacteria to better manage tailings, reducing risks and optimising storage capacity. Bacteria have the potential to enhance tailings dewatering, maintain their permeability, delay the onset of desiccation cracking, and improve their shear strength. Bacteria-treated tailings may be suitable for use as construction materials. Bacteria also have potential in limiting the dusting of tailings and facilitating rehabilitation on closure. The paper describes a series of laboratory involving the addition of harmless bacteria to a range of tailings. The bacteria form a compact material called calcite (a common and stable form of calcium carbonate), which immobilises the tailings particles, releases water, and cements the tailings in a stable and natural matrix. The water released can be recovered or evaporated, depending on site objectives. The bacterial reactions are linked to physical and chemical processes, providing the potential for an optimal mix of technologies for particular tailings and site conditions.CITATION:Cifuentes, H and Williams, D J, 2018. A major thrust in Industrial automation over the past few years has been the exploration and incorporation of higher level (supervisory and optimizing) control strategies aimed at more fully exploiting the existing control system infrastructure. There is little doubt that this is worthwhile pursuit, however, one must not lose sight of the maintenance and development requirements of the basic control system. Statistics on loop performance indicate that this too is an area of considerable potential. In this paper the authors look at some of the less elegant, but arguably equally important issues in mineral processing plant control. The focus is on controller structures, loop tuning, sampling, filtering, and some of the other principal components of the regulatory control foundations. In many cases significant improvements In control performance can be achieved by getting back to the basics.

In a flotation process of copper ore three factors were measured: copper grade in concentrate (β), copper grade in tailings (J) and recovery of copper in concentrate (e). The experiment was conducted by means of the Jameson cell. The factors influencing the quality of the process were particle size (d), time of separation (t), type of the collector (k) and dosage of the collector (s). The considered vector function was then [β(d, t, k, s), J(d, t, k, s), e(d, t, k, s)]. Optimisation achieved was based on determining the values of the adjustable factors (d, t, k, s). The goal was to obtain the highest possible values of functions β and e (maximum) and the lowest possible values of function J (minimum). To this purpose the taxonomic methods were applied. Successful technology commercialization occurs when a company is focused on creating shareholder value by providing a reliable product at a price point attractive to the market, while at the same time maintaining strict control of its internal cash burn rates. Developing a technology platform and a market platform are equally important in the commercialization of new technologies such as fuel cells. This paper will discuss some of the key barriers that may prevent successful market entry for emerging and disruptive technologies, such as: R&D priorities, supply chain / manufacturing issues, materials, cost reduction strategies, customer needs, developing a market pull strategy, institutional barriers such as existing regulatory/approvals processes and/or current design/purchasing practices, product reliability and resilience, and finding the right path to market. SDTC is an arms length foundation that aims to financially support the successful market entry of emerging and disruptive technologies that can provide significant environmental benefits to Canada. The fuel cell industry, which represents one such technology, is at a critical point in its evolution where market receptivity and the technology platform are converging to potentially create significant customer advantages for fuel cell products being developed today. Since its inception in 2001, SDTC has received over 850 business cases from which it has identified successful strategies to overcome the noted barriers to commercialization. While maintaining commercial confidentiality, the SDTC database will be mined to: Identify specific success stories that have overcome various barriers and discuss their strategy; Identify specific fuel cell related industry experiences that hinder successful market uptake. The general attributes and trends of successful technology developments identified in this paper will hopefully provide guidance to technology developers and prepare them to successfully tackle the next set of hurdles on the path to commercializing their technology, once they have proven their technology works in the laboratory.

Kidston Gold Mine in Queensland, Australia has a 310 ha tailings impoundment that has undergone final closure rehabilitation. Kidston Gold Mine evaluated their closure options for this low acid generating tailings impoundment, and due to a lack of cover soils and the cost of importing material, the mine decided to investigate the possibility of direct vegetation onto the tailings impoundment surface. The mine subsequently embarked upon a well planned and detailed research program to determine the feasibility and sustainability of this closure option. The research program included vegetation trials, toxicology studies for metal uptake by vegetation, as well as a comprehensive closure water balance model for the tailings impoundment complex. This paper describes the results of the long-term closure water balance for the tailings impoundment complex for the pre-closure state of the impoundment, as well as predictions towards the impoundment performance once final rehabilitation of the tailings impoundment complex has been achieved. The water balance presented is unique in that it is founded on unsaturated flow principles and accounts in full the impacts of the surface flux boundary conditions. This novel approach enables the prediction of actual infiltration rates into the tailings impoundment surface, which in turn allows for the calculation of how much seepage will exit from the tailings dam toe drains.

A aplicação de vidros planos com eficiência energética está aumentando de forma significativa no mercado mundial. A performance energética, bem como as propriedades estéticas, cor, reflexão e transmissão, são os motivos pelos quais estes vidros são aplicados na construção civil. Estes vidros planos com eficiência energética são produtos constituídos por uma lâmina de vidro tipo Soda-Cálcio revestida por filmes finos em escala nanométrica. Tais filmes finos são em sua maioria constituídos de ligas metálicas, metais puros e materiais cerâmicos, como óxidos e nitretos. As propriedades físicas e químicas de cada camada afetam diretamente as propriedades ópticas e a performance do produto. Este trabalho tem por objetivo o estudo das propriedades ópticas de filmes finos de Nitreto de Silício, depositados por Magnetron Sputtering Reativo sobre substrato de vidro Soda-Cálcio.
