In this work, activated carbons (ACs) were prepared using Sewage sludge as starting material. The ACs were pyrolyzed in an inert atmosphere at 550 °C after independent chemical treatment with ZnCl2 or KOH with ratio of 1:1. The materials were used as adsorbents for removal of Cu(II) from aqueous solutions. The adsorbents were characterized using adsorption/desorption nitrogen isotherm, SEM (scanning electron microscopy). The results showed that copper removal could be linked to surface pH and compounds present on the surface of adsorbent. KOH-treated adsorbent has smaller surface area (186 m2 g-1) than ZnCl2-treated adsorbent (192 m2 g-1), however, KOH-treated adsorbent exhibited higher removal of Cu(II). The performance of KOH-treated adsorbent could be attributed to the presence of basic groups on the adsorbent surface. Liu isotherm model gave the best description of the equilibrium data. From the Liu isotherm, the maximum adsorption capacities at 298 K for KOH-treated, ZnCl2-treated and sewage sludge (without inorganic activation) adsorbents are 31.85, 19.79 and 3.513 mg g-1, respectively. The best desorption experiment was obtained using 1.50 mol L-1 of HNO3 as eluent. Recoveries of Cu(II) from Cu(II)-loaded adsorbents are 98.9% (ZnCl2-treated) and 95.5% (KOH-treated.

THIS paper describes a series of tests performed at the Hollinger mill during the past four years, in which both metal and rubber-lined pumps were used for pumping sand and slime. While conditions will not be the same at other mills, it is felt that the information gained from the tests should be of value to other operators and of assistance to them in selecting the most efficient size of pump and kind of lining for economical operation. For the successful operation of pumps with rubber linings there are certain conditions, which, if recognized at the outset, will save the operator a good deal of work and trouble. First is the necessity of keeping sharp pieces of steel, or anything that might cut the lining, out of the pumps. This can be effected by placing screens in the proper locations. Second is to recognize the fact that the rubber lining of the shell, and the rubber cover of the impeller, are subjected to very different conditions. The shell lining, :being at rest and well supported by the metal case, has a relatively easy job compared ? with the impeller covering, which is subjected to centrifugal force and has a tendency to tear itself away from the metal core. Also, the pulp travels through and past the impeller at a high velocity. These two factors, centrifugal force and velocity of the pulp, would appear to set a limit to the speed at which, for a given set of conditions, it is economical to run a rubber-covered impeller. Therefore, a pump should be large enough for the work to be done. To get the best mechanical efficiency, it must be operated somewhere near the limit of its capacity, but this may not give the best overall cost, because the saving in power, due to the high efficiency, may easily be lost through excessive wear on the lining. It would appear that this condition is more critical in a rubber-lined pump than in one lined with metal.

The Bureau of Mines determined agents that are effective in foaming heavy brines and oil from gas wells in severe concentrations of sodium chloride, in severe concentrations of calcium chloride, or in moderate oil-brine mixtures. Dynamic foam tests were designed to select the more effective foaming agents. Numerous foaming agents were tested in concentrated simulated brines, in oilfield brines having varied concentrations of ions, in heavy natural brines, and in a commercial brine generally used as a reservoir pressure-balancing fluid. Several agents were detected that could perform efficiently in the field under the most severe saline conditions. Agents that promote foaming in oil-brine mixtures were also determined.

The paper aims at clarifying the up-to-now misappreciated role taken by pore water on the design of deep tunnels in saturated porous media. Numerical simulations with a non-dimensional FEM-model emphasise the influence of pore water characteristics (in situ pressure and compressibility) and boundary conditions (lining permeability) on the short and long term underground-structure equilibrium states. These results cannot be achieved by means of monophasic total stress analyses. Electronic detonators have been in commercial use for a decade, with an excellent safety record. This paper lists known incidents involving electronic detonators. Typical standards required by regulatory bodies for static electricity and electromagnetic fields are reviewed. The performance of some detonators is compared to these standards; in general the minimum standards are easily exceeded. The general resistance of electronic detonators to extraneous electrical energy that can be derived from the body of test results is compared to danger levels for exposure of humans to these energies; it is shown that electronic detonators can safely tolerate higher electrical energies than people can. This comparison includes comparable data for electric detonators, which are shown to be more vulnerable to extraneous electrical energy than people are. Electronic detonators also bring significant safety benefits in blasting due to their testability, two-way communications, reliability, programmability and precision. The links between these attributes and enhanced safety are discussed with examples from actual blasting. Although electronic detonators are usually more vulnerable to extraneous electricity than non-electric initiation systems, the paper shows that the net safety benefit in handling and blasting is in favor of electronic detonators, which are the safest initiation system that has ever been offered to the mining industry.

The Upper Group 2 (UG2) chromitite reef is a shallow-dipping stratiform tabular orebody in the South African Bushveld Complex, which strikes for hundreds of kilometres. Mining is extensive, with depths ranging from close-to-surface to 2 500 m. Pillars are widely used to support the open stopes and bords. Little work has been done in the past to determine the strength of pillars on the UG2 Reef and design was done using formulae developed for other hard-rock mines. This has led to oversized pillars with consequent sterilization of ore. In this paper we describe a back-analysis of stable and failed UG2 pillars on the Bushveld platinum mines, and provides a strength formula for UG2 pillars. The formula may be used cautiously on all Bushveld platinum mines with similar geotechnical, geometrical, and geomechanical conditions to the pillars in the database.

National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health method 7703 is a portable field procedure for the analysis of workplace air filter samples for hexavalent chromium (CrVI) content immediately after the samples are collected. The field method prescribes CrVI extraction from air filter samples with an ammonium sulfate/ammonium hydroxide extraction buffer using ultrasonic extraction (UE). Strong anion-exchange solidphase extraction (SAE-SPE) is then used to separate CrVI from trivalent chromium and other interferences. Portable spectrophotometric measurement of CrVI is then conducted using the 1,5-diphenylcarbazide (DPC) method. However, it has been found that the ammonium extraction buffer does not dequately bring insoluble CrVI compounds into solution during the UE process. Thus, it was deemed necessary to modify the field method so that it would provide acceptable recoveries for insoluble CrVI compounds. To this end, a more alkaline extraction solution—sodium carbonate/sodium bicarbonate buffer—was investigated. The modified procedure using the highly alkaline extraction solution was demonstrated to be compatible with SAE-SPE cartridges when determining insoluble CrVI in air filter samples. It was found that the carbonate/bicarbonate buffer was equally effective for complete dissolution of both insoluble and soluble forms of CrVI. Furthermore, the modified procedure met desired performance criteria established for air sampling and analytical methods. A necessidade de treinamento é uma realidade nas indústrias. A qualificação de operadores é importante para garantir segurança e prevenir perdas econômicas. Nesse contexto, o objetivo desse trabalho é desenvolver e avaliar um simulador de treinamento de operador. O estudo de caso é um moinho vertical, comumente utilizado na indústria de cimento. Nessa direção, passou-se pela construção de um supervisório, pela modelagem e simulação dinâmica de um moinho vertical e, por fim, pela elaboração e execução de um treinamento. Para tal, foram construídos três cenários de situações anormais, além da consideração da operação normal. Ainda em relação à metodologia, treinaram-se dois grupos de alunos com métodos distintos de ensino: o primeiro recebeu apenas um treinamento teórico, através de uma apresentação multimídia; e o segundo, após esse treinamento teórico, recebeu um treinamento prático, ou seja, do tipo aprender fazendo, a partir do contato direto com o simulador de processos. De modo geral, percebeu-se que o contato com a prática possibilitou um maior entendimento da operação do moinho vertical, do grau de dependência entre as variáveis de entrada e de saída, e das variáveis utilizadas para a recuperação do processo à operação normal, contribuindo ainda para uma maior fixação do conhecimento teórico. Esse trabalho é resultado de uma parceria UniversidadeEmpresa, cujas atividades foram desenvolvidas por um grupo de alunos de graduação em Engenharia Química.

Thunder Basin Coal Company received the 1987 Wyoming Excellence in Surface Mining Award for construction of the State's first major sediment control reservoir to be designed using the new settleable sol ids standard. Use of this standard resulted in construction cost savings of more than $250,000; reduced water quality monitoring; enhanced downstream channel stability because of more natural sediment loading; allowed simultaneous establishment of permanent waterfowl and fisheries habitat; and provided a quality recreational site. This article will address factors associated with the design and construction of that sediment reservoir and the benefits that were realized. A brief resume follows of some recent activities of the Division of Coal-Mine Inspection that have had a favorable effect on health, safety, and the reduction of injuries at coal mines: 1. The Federal Mine Safety Code for Bituminous-Coal and Lignite Mines of the United States was issued originally by the Director of the Bureau of Mines on July 24, 1946, after consultation with management and labor representatives of the coal-mining industry. The code has been used by Federal coal-mine inspectors during their inspections of bituminous-coal and lignite mines as a basis for determining the existence of unhealthful and unsafe conditions and practices in these mines. A revised code was issued by the Secretary of the Interior October 8, 1953, following further consultations with representatives of management and mine workers, and was incorporated by reference in the 1952 and subsequent bituminous-coal wage agreements. The agreement of May 29, 1946, between the Secretary of the Interior, acting as Coal Mines Administrator under authority of Executive Order 9728, and the United Mine Workers of America, covering bituminous-coal and lignite mines in Government possession, charged Federal coal-mine inspectors with the responsibility of making periodic investigations of the mines and reporting to the Coal Mines Administrator any violations of the Federal Mine Safety Code. The inspectors were active in making prompt investigations of hazardous mines that had been closed by order of the Coal Mines Administrator to determine if enough improvements had been made to allow the mines to reopen. Federal coal-mine inspectors also had temporary authority to close mines they found to be imminently dangerous, but such authority (under Executive Order 9728) was removed on June 30, 1947, when Government control of the mines was terminated.

Mercury is introduced into EZ's electroly tic zinc/sulphuric acid plant complex at Risdon, Tasmania, in zinc sulphide concentrate. Mercury is volatilised during the roasting operation and then distributed in the sulphuric acid plant effluents and product acid. Following an investigation of the factors determining the mercury distribution, a plan was formulated to-provide an environmentally accep- table degree of mercury containment at Risdon. This paper discusses details of the various control measures investigated and out- lines the reasons for selecting the particular procedures finally adopted for the Risdon plant.

"Nickel-base Alloy 617 is being considered as a structural material for application in the secondary heat exchanger of the New Generation Nuclear Plant, a very high temperature gascooled reactor. Thermal aging of Alloy 617 plate and welds is being performed with tensile, Charpy impact, and fracture toughness tests conducted at temperatures to 950°C. Results of testing for thermal aging to 5,300 h have been obtained and are presented; varying effects of thermal aging temperature and time on fracture toughness are observed. The 9Cr-1MoV (Grade 91) ferritic steel is a candidate for structural applications in the sodium fast reactor. Fracture toughness testing of unaged Grade 91 steel has been performed to evaluate specimen size effects in preparation for future testing of the material in the thermally aged condition. Results for material in the mill-annealed and heat treated conditions are presented and show that this heat of Grade 91 steel does not indicate a small specimen bias on the fracture toughness Master Curve reference temperature.IntroductionThe behavior of advanced engineering materials will be a critical factor in the performance of Generation IV reactors. In the case of materials utilized for reactor internals and pressure vessels, the effects of irradiation and long time thermal aging are major issues. The environmental conditions for some of the Gen IV reactors are generally beyond present day reactor technology, requiring new experimental data as well as analytical predictions of expected behavior of candidate materials at conditions for which there are only sparse or no experimental data. The radiation environments and several key materials issues for some Gen IV systems are summarized in Section 5 of [l] as a starting point for modeling and microstructural analysis of Generation IV materials. More detailed descriptions of materials research and development needs and recommended activities for the SCWR, VHTR, and GFR are provided in references [2, 3, 4], respectively. Mansur, et. al. provide an interesting comparison of materials needs for Generation IV reactors to corresponding needs for fusion reactors and spallation neutron sources in [5]. Este trabalho visa apresentar alguns resultados obtidos através de ensaios balísticos realizados em sistemas de blindagem multicamada. Seguindo as especificações da norma americana NIJ 0101.06, foram realizados ensaios utilizando munição de calibre 7,62x 51 mm, que possui velocidade acima de 800 m/s. A blindagem multicamada utilizada possui como camada frontal uma pastilha hexagonal cerâmica (alumina dopada com 4% de nióbia), segunda camada de compósito de matriz poliéster reforçada com tecido de juta e como terceira camada uma placa de alumino 5052 H34. A utilização de compósitos poliméricos reforçados com fibras naturais em substituição às fibras de aramida é de grande interesse, pois além de desempenharem a mesma função no sistema de blindagem, possuem um valor de mercado bem menor. Com os resultados obtidos do ensaio balístico, os valores foram associados com o seu comportamento dinâmico utilizando o método do casamento de impedâncias.

THE Greenhill mine of West Canadian Collieries, Limited, is situated at Blairmore, Alberta, and produces 2,500 tons per day of bituminous coal. On Monday, October 25th, 1943, smoke was discovered by a party of firebosses on their regular weekly inspection of air-ways. Probably the fire had been smouldering for several days but, as it had started on the outcrop at the top of an old raise filled with dirt, only a small quantity of smoke could filter through, and the plume of mist that crowns the fan at that season had prevented the fan-man from noticing it. This raise is only about 200 feet from the fan, and is 70 feet long between the fan-drift and the outcrop. It was impossible to prove the origin of the fire, as it had probably started several days before it was discovered, but it is possible that a careless smoker may have thrown a match into the opening at the outcrop, and that the old, dry timber had caught fire. The airways are in No. 2 seam, a bituminous seam 18 to 25 feet thick surmounted by shales and sandstones. Only 45 feet vertically above it is No. 1 seam, 12 feet thick, overlain by a strong conglomerate. In that vicinity, No. 1 seam had been worked out about ten years ago and the strata between the two seams are undoubtedly fissured. The pitch of both seams is 43 degrees.

In many parts of the country, electric utilities use spot market coal to make up the difference between the amount of contract coal and the total amount burned. The utilities involved will normally have a structured contract for those companies supplying that spot coal. These contracts will often involve a pricing schedule with bonuses or penalties for coal above or below the specified coal quality goals. Normally, penalties will be assessed on the sulfur, ash, and other coal quality variables. This paper deals with some aspects of the pricing schedule of one of the eastern utilities that buys coal on the spot market. This utility has a number of plants that a supplier can attempt to supply through bidding procedures. The existence of the pricing schedule gives the supplier a number of different options. To the single-mine producer, options are available to send the coal to any demand site and to clean all, part, or none of the coal. In other words, he can ship to a number of different sites and can send different coal qualities to each site depending upon the level of preparation. In addition, the options to deliver blended coal to any given site will provide an additional level of complexity to the problem.

Colorado has recorded more than 100 years of industrial mineral production. Much of the state's history, culture, and economy is based in mining, but the industrial minerals and construction materials comprising the nonmetallics sector of the industry very often are overlooked or overshadowed by mineral fuels and the metals. Indeed, many of these materials find use in seemingly unimportant industrial applications essential to our economy and life style and yet are not so recognized by the consumer. Unlike many other mineral resources, the numerous industrial minerals occur in many different and often exotic geologic environments, some of which are characteristic only of the western states. In Colorado only a few of these minerals have continued production through the years; many saw only "boom" periods or other critical times of need, such as the world wars. The changing needs and demands of our society in the 1980s will stimulate yet another era of intensive activity in our industrial minerals storehouse. Researchers are finding new uses and applications for these materials in dealing with the energy crisis and fuel shortages, the need to develop domestic mineral reserves of all kinds, and the goals of reuse and recycling. Some of Colorado's little-used and unused industrial minerals hold extraordinary promise in solving some of these problems on the regional and national levels. In this paper we will look at the history of development of Colorado's more prominent nonmetallics and especially at current research on and future potential of several other commodities among which Colorado contains the largest known reserves.

Low metal prices and increasingly stringent environmental regulations, coupled with the threat of higher governmental royalties are adversely affecting both existing and new operations. Existing operations must therefore be run at maximum operating efficiencies to enable mining companies to survive and grow. Well planned and executed "outsider" reviews can help achieve this goal. Many mine managers and those who direct them resist the idea of "outsider" reviews for a variety of reasons, some valid and some not. Those managers who do bring in the "outsiders" are nearly unanimous in reporting that the exercise in self-discipline was well worth the pain and effort and repaid the cost many times over. This paper makes a strong case for "outsider" reviews and gives recommendations on the kinds of reviews to undertake. The authors draw upon their nearly 70 years combined experience, much of which has been in operations.

THIS method of briquetting flue-dust, or flue-dust mixed with fine ores, or, in a few exceptional cases, coke-dust, has come into large commercial use in Europe, and a small plant is already in operation in the United States. It promises to become of such great importance to the iron industry of the United States that the following description will certainly interest the majority of our pig-iron producers. Discovered in 1908, the process rests upon the observation of Dr. Schumacher that blast-furnace flue-dust, while possessing of itself no binding or cementing properties, acquires strong cementing properties if mixed with a very small amount of certain salt solutions, the amount of which is so small that the resulting cementation appears to be rather by catalytic action of the salts added than by the mass-action of such chemicals. To be more specific, fresh blast-furnace flue-dust mixed with from 5 to 10 per cent. of its weight of magnesium chloride or calcium chloride solution-that is to say, with from 0.25 to 2 per cent. of its weight of magnesium chloride or calcium chloride-acquires the property of setting within a short time, from 15 to 60 min., and forming a hard cemented briquette. Alkaline solutions appear to have no action such as described, and they even interfere, if present, with the action of the magnesium and calcium solutions. When treated in this way the flue-dust briquette sets very hard, apparently from pure excess of cementing- and setting-power. It is, therefore, possible to . mix with the flue-dust a considerable proportion of inert ore or like material, which has no setting-power by this process, and thus to make a compound briquette containing large quantities of ore mixed with flue-dust, but in which the flue-dust may be regarded as the cement or binding-material. An advanced semi-stochastic algorithm for constrained multi-objective optimization has been adapted and combined with experimental testing and verification to determine optimum concentrations of aJ10ying elements in heat-resistant and corrosion-resistant H-Series austenitic stainless steel alloys. The objective was to simultaneously maximize a number of alloy's mechanical properties. This research will result in a rigorous tool for the design of high-strength H-Series steels and other types of alloys unattainable by any means existing at the present time. Such a material-by-design tool will also be able to reduce or minimize the need for the addition of expensive elements such as Cr, Ni, Co, Nb, Ti, V, etc. and still obtain the optimum properties of an aJ1oy.
