A corrosão é definida como sendo um conjunto de fenômenos de deterioração dos materiais em consequência de reações entre o material e o meio. Em instalações metálicas, tais processos são monitorados através de cupons de perda de massa. Quando o ataque se evidencia pela formação de cavidades com pouca perda uniforme, ele é denominado corrosão por pites. As empresas de monitoramento de corrosão adquirem cupons de diferentes fornecedores, e pouco se observa quanto ao tipo de processamento durante a fabricação, a composição química, a microestrutura, entre outros parâmetros e o quanto, podem alterar a confiabilidade dos resultados. O presente trabalho tem como objetivo avaliar o desempenho de cupons aço carbono, relacionando a composição química, densidade de inclusões e pites de corrosão presente em cupons. Na caracterização foram envolvidas as análises química e microscópica. Os cupons foram ensaiados em loop de corrosão tendo como fluido a água potável. Para determinar a densidade, área e profundidade dos pites de corrosão foram adotados as normas NACERP0775 e ASTM G46-94. Foi observada uma relação direta entre o teor de enxofre e a densidade de inclusões e, consequentemente, entre a densidade de pites presente nos cupons, após ensaio em loop de corrosão.

Aesthetics is the philosphy of taste. It is concerned with the appreciation of things rather than what they really are. To isolate the tailings basin so surrounding land is not degraded. The first step here is stabilization of the surface to prevent wind and water erosion."

O cobre é um dos metais mais utilizados desde os primórdios da indústria, principalmente para a fabricação de fios e cabos para fins elétricos. Dentre as diversas propriedades do cobre, as mais importantes são: capacidade que o material tem de conduzir corrente elétrica e quantidade de energia utilizada para realizar o recozimento garantindo o alongamento especificado. Essas propriedades são diretamente influenciadas pelo teor de oxigênio adicionado como elemento de liga durante a fabricação do vergalhão de cobre eletrolítico. Neste contexto, o artigo tem o objetivo de apresentar como realizar o controle do oxigênio no processo de laminação e quais as influências desse elemento para diminuir os custos com energia elétrica, reduzir as quebras no processo de trefilação e aumentar a condutividade elétrica dos produtos de cobre.

The safety record established by the coal-mining industry of the United States during 1934, although not as favorable as that for the previous year, was better than the record for any other year during the period 1930-34 for which complete figures covering fatal and nonfatal accidents at the mines are available. The number of accidents was 89.98 per million man-hours of employment compared with 86.74 for the year 1933, the latter being the lowest rate in any of the 5 years referred to. The rate was 105.60 for 1930, the first year covered by available data. Employment increased in 1934; the number of workers represented an increase of 8 percent over the year 1933, man-shifts of labor increased 16 percent, and the number of man-hours of labor increased 7 percent. The total number of man-hours of employment also exceeded the number reported for 1932, and was almost equal to the record for 1931.

Hydrocyclones are the most commonly used classifiers in the mining industry. The reason for this is their low operating cost and a small footprint. Data from plant trials where screens replaced hydrocyclones indicated that lower bypass of fines and sharper separation could improve breakage rates, with a positive effect on flotation circuit performance throughput. Despite the importance of classification, hydrocyclones have not received as much attention as more expensive comminution units, and their technological progress has been incremental. Noticeable water split (Rf) reductions of a semi-inverted hydrocyclone have been reported in the past. According to theory, the hydrocyclone with reduced Rf will improve classification of fines. A classification study using semi-inverted hydrocyclones was conducted to determine if a hydrocyclone could be operated in a way that would minimise misclassified fines. The classification performance of a semi-inverted hydrocyclone will be presented in this paper and other potential applications will be discussed. During the past decade, considerable effort has been made to develop improved flotation strategies for the sedimentary phosphate resources from Florida, particularly the dolomitic phosphate resources. New flotation equipment and alternate flotation strategies have been evaluated. These developments are reviewed for both traditional siliceous resources and future dolomitic resources. Most process strategies involve variation in the reagent sequence and/or the use of depressants/dispersants. Further research and development efforts in flotation technology are needed to increase flotation plant capacity by elimination of the conventional double float process, to improve the recovery of coarse phosphate, and to achieve the desired selectivity with respect to carbonate minerals, particularly dolomite.

V-AI alloys have been used commercially to produce pure vanadium by Electron Beam Melting (EBM), as well as to obtain Ti-based alloys (ex. Ti-6AI-4V). The aluminothermic reduction of vanadium pentoxide (V205) is the primary method to obtain these alloys. Concerning the obtention of pure vanadium, earlier studies have indicated alloys presenting Al content between 10 and 15wt% as the most suitable alloys for direct EBM. In the present work we investigated the aluminothermic reduction of V205 in order to define process parameters for the obtention of V-AI alloys with composition in the previously mentioned range. It was studied basically the effect of excess AI, CaO addition and reaction atmosphere (air, argon) on the alloy composition (AI, 0, N). In addition, microstructural analysis of selected alloys by SEM (BSE images) and EPMA (WDX) were also performed.

In open pit blasting, energy is released and transmitted through the geology. Negative effects can impact operations and can affect mine production. This paper presents recommendations for blast design to prevent damage due to ground motion from blasting on adjacent concrete structures of underground operations. It includes a case study describing a problem regarding an open pit mine expansion and asks whether production blasting will damage concrete shaft structures due to blast stress waves and blast-induced ground motion.

STATNAMIC load testing augmented with embedded instrumentation has been successfully used to obtain structural and geotechnical design information on large diameter spun cast concrete cylinder piles on many large marine construction projects. The paper focuses on one particularly interesting large marine project involving a new bridge to St. George Island, Florida where instrumentation and STATNAMIC load testing was used in conjunction with static load testing on high capacity piles. The information presented includes embedded instrumentation measurements taken during pile fabrication (post-tensioning), during pile driving, during static load testing, and STATNAMIC load testing. As much of this data is the first of its kind on concrete cylinder piles, it is exciting to present the foundation industry with this additional insight as to the behavior of this pile type and the accuracy of the methods used to test them.

Os pós fluxantes têm como base o sistema CaO-SiO2-Al2O3-Na2O-CaF2 sendo que, em alguns casos, podem conter também MgO, Li2O, K2O e B2O3. Os resíduos de mármore e granito, oriundos dos processos de produção de rochas ornamentais, são passivos ambientais na região sudeste, sobretudo no estado do Espírito Santo. As composições destes resíduos são similares a dos pós fluxantes utilizados nos processos de lingotamento contínuo e portanto serão utilizados neste trabalho para formulação de novos fluxantes. Uma mistura de granito, pó de mármore e adições foi realizada com o objetivo de produzir um fluxante similar aos comerciais encontrados no mercado. O novo fluxante foi caracterizado por difração de Raios X antes e depois de passar pelo teste de susceptibilidade de formação de fases cristalinas ou “teste de Stollberg” modificado. Os resultados mostraram que existe a formação de fases similares às observadas em fluxantes comerciais. Avanços nesta área podem viabilizar economia de matéria-prima e a diminuição do impacto ambiental causado pelo mercado de rochas.

More than twenty years ago Sasol, ISCOR, and some parastatals played a major role in ensuring that South Africa had sufficient technical skills. When the economy became tight and business and government were pressurized to decrease costs, the first budgets that were reduced were the training budgets. It seemed to be too expensive and too time-consuming to train apprentices. According to Stacey2, this is a major strategic issue facing the mining industry in South Africa. Two factors added to the shortage of skills challenge: ? Skills erosion and job losses ? Artisans ? currently the economy produces 5 000 but the need is 12 500 ? Level of mechanization in South Africa less than 10 per cent ? Average age of operators and artisans is 50 ? Greater awareness of occupational health effects of hand-held drilling. ? The Bureau of Mines examined a fibrous talc sample from the Gouverneur talc district in New York by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and polarized light microscopy to determine the mineralogical relationship of the fibrous talc to the amphiboles present in the sample. Two am-phiboles, anthophyllite and tremolite, were present in the sample. Tremolite occurred as a separate mineral phase, which was blocky in habit. Only a few composite tremolite-talc grains were observed. An-thophyllite, however, was present only in the fibrous talc grains. Mi-crodiffraction study of the fibrous talc grains containing anthophyllite showed that the anthophyllite was intermixed with the talc on a fine scale and that there was a crystallographic relationship between the talc and anthophyllite lattices in the fibrous talc grains. A mechanism similar to the process that forms biopyriboles could explain the structural defects, the fibrous habit of the talc, and the structural relationship between the talc and anthophyllite in the fibrous talc grains. Because of these characteristics, phase contrast microscopy and a provisional TEM technique for monitoring asbestos exposure would not distinguish between fibrous talc and fibrous amphiboles. TEM techniques employing electron diffraction and energy-dispersive X-ray analysis are recommended to positively identify the fibrous phases for regulatory purposes.

A estabilização do aço inoxidável ferrítico ASTM 409 na aplicação em sistemas de exaustão de automóveis é cada vez mais exigida em função do aumento das garantias e de desempenho neste sistema, particularmente em temperaturas mais elevadas dos gases de escape. O Ti é um dos elementos mais utilizado como estabilizante da estrutura ferrítica. No entanto, teores elevados deste elemento pioram as condições de lingotabilidade durante a produção do aço, aumentando a sua suscetibilidade a problemas de qualidade superficial. Desta forma, a dupla estabilização com Ti e Nb é uma solução para reduzir o teor de titânio. Assim, o objetivo deste trabalho foi investigar o efeito da adição de Nb na microestrutura por meio da comparação entre o aço ferrítico estabilizado ao Ti (409H) e bi-estabilizado ao Ti e Nb (409S). Os resultados deste trabalho mostraram que o aço 409S é afetado diretamente pela microestrutura mais deformada após laminação a quente em relação ao aço 409H, gerando maior força motriz para recristalização no recozimento final.

The present study aims at the reduction of the dolomitic limestone by the addition of lime added with high MgO (magnesium oxide) content in the sintering process. To verify the feasibility of the use of additive lime as an alternative source of magnesium oxide, sintering tests were carried out at pot grate with different percentages of additive lime addition and with proportional reduction of the calcite lime dosage, evaluating the effects on the sintering process. The results showed that the additive lime is a good source of MgO for consumption in the sintering process of iron ore.

Newmont's research, operations, history and experience with pre-treatment of preg-robbing carbonaceous ores are described, with emphasis on the chemistry, physics and kinetics of chlorine treatment. Present operations, control strategy and projected changes are also described, including a summary of the adsorption of chlorine into pulps and off-gas scrubbing. Conditions of chlorination have been optimized by the use of Eh-pH diagrams of the gold-chlorine-water system, and have resulted in significant increases in gold recoveries and decreases in chlorine consumptions.

The contribution presents a new finite element approach in which the common updated Lagrangian formulation is replaced by a spatial flow formulation applying a special arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian for-mulation (ALE). The description separates spatially the process in a die inside zone and in a profile zone. For the description of the inside zone, where the filling process occurs, a special Euler time independent mesh is applied. By this formulation the mesh has to be generated only once, which simplifies the generation of spatially optimized meshes. For mapping of the material flow during the filling process the method uses a flow surface traction method as applied in casting simulations. A further strength of the new method is the computational efficiency which allows the modelling of extrusion process with the highest complexity with a response time of 12 hours, which is important for the industrial optimization process.

La gasificación por plasma es un proceso térmico a alta temperatura en el que los desechos se descomponen en elementos fundamentales y compuestos simples en un entorno anaeróbico. El sistema presentado en este artículo actúa como un digestor al transformar las moléculas de carbono y otras sustancias en compuestos menos contaminantes. Se utilizó una mezcla de cianuro disuelto en agua como muestra de ensayo —procedente de aguas de una mina—, que se sometió al componente radiante de plasma, y se estudió la energía generada actuando sobre la purificación y transformación de las muestras.

O crescente aumento da produção do setor moveleiro tem fortemente contribuído para a economia do país. No entanto, o setor gera grande quantidade de resíduos sólidos. Este trabalho visa avaliar o resíduo em pó de MDF, com o intuito de identificar a melhor forma de valorização do mesmo. Para isso, realizou-se um diagnóstico ambiental de uma fábrica de móveis de pequeno porte, e procedeu-se a caracterização do resíduo de MDF na forma de pó. O diagnóstico ambiental identificou que o resíduo na forma de pó está presente em todas as etapas do processo. As etapas de maiores impactos ambientais são a de corte e acabamento/polimento, já que nestas ocorre a maior geração de resíduo sólido, bem como consumo de energia e geração de material particulado. A caracterização da amostra identificou o material com algumas limitações para aplicações em processos industriais, mas que podem ser atenuadas com algum tipo de beneficiamento, podendo o mesmo ser utilizado como carga de reforço em matriz polimérica.

A resistência à corrosão e mecânica dos aços inoxidáveis duplex dependem da distribuição de fases, portanto, é fundamental a compreensão das transformações microestruturais que ocorrem na zona termicamente afetada (ZTA) em função do aporte de calor em processos de soldagem. A fim de investigar a evolução microestrutural no aço inoxidável duplex SAF 2205 durante a soldagem, foram simulados na Gleeble dois ciclos térmicos com aporte de calor de 15 e 30 kJ/cm, considerando a temperatura de pico de 1350°C, seguido de têmpera a 500 e 250°C. As microestruturas na condição de como recebido e da ZTA simulada foram caracterizadas através de microscopia óptica (MO) e de microscopia eletrônica de varredura (MEV). Foram utilizadas diferentes técnicas metalográficas para a caracterização da microestrutura e identificadas três diferentes morfologias de austenita: nos contornos de grão, austenita Widmanstätten e a austenita intragranular, assim como diferentes frações volumétricas destas fases.
