The present paper describes state-of-the-art Pulverized Coal Injection technology with focus to Dynamic Distribution guaranteeing highest accuracy on equal distribution and being thus one of the key factors enabling constantly highest injection rates. As an alternative to the construction of a new plant, existing plants may be modernized and upgraded to latest technology. Two recent examples are presented. As a conclusion, two case studies of return on investment are showing that the PCI technology, both for new facilities as well as for upgrades, is very profitable and mandatory for high blast furnace operation effectiveness.

ABSTRACT Stope backfilling is a common operation in many underground mines, which requires a barricade at the base of the stope near the drift entrance to retain the backfill in place. In this paper, the distribution of pore-water pressure in barricades made of waste rock is analyzed. An analytical solution is introduced and applied to estimate the pore-water pressure along the base and full height of the barricade. Results show that the analytical solution generally accurately predicts the distribution of pore-water pressure obtained from the numerical calculations, especially in the upstream part of the barricade, where it is most critical.

An 8.5-km (5-mile) conveyor has gone into operation in western Turkey to eco¬nomically transport crushed lignite from the mine area to a power plant. This conveyor has replaced trucks as the principal mode of transporting the lignite. One principal element of Turkish govern¬ment policy is the country's commitment to increase electricity supplies for mining and other industries. Lignite is an important source of electric power supply in Turkey. Production was about 48 Mt (53 million st) in 1987, amounting to more than 20% of the total power supply in Turkey. In the western Anatolia supply network, it plays a major role for power generation. Deposits are located in the Soma region of western Turkey. The lignite is of low quality, deposits are scattered, and the terrain is dif¬ficult and hilly. These conditions demand an economical and technically feasible method of transporting the raw material from mining areas to the central thermal power plant. The Soma power plant is located about 120 km (75 miles) northeast of Izmir, near the coast of Aegean Sea. An overland conveyor of a unique design has gone into commercial operation at the Soma power plant facilities of the Turkish state electricity organization, Türkiye El¬ektrik Kurumu (TEK). The conveyor re¬places truck transport to ensure economical use of the lignite deposits. Computer-aided design (CAD) added more precision, qual¬ity, and flexibility of engineering in design activities. It also helped quick realization of the project that was executed in cooperation with the German company Krupp Industri¬etechnik and the Turkish firm Gama Endüstri AS. Unique features The conveyor includes several major features rarely combined in a single flight: Overland long distance conveyor. • Horizontal curves. -Steep vertical concave and convex curves to match the difficult terrain. Down-hill conveying. Frequency converter drives with vari¬ able belt speed. Generating operation mode to backfeed the energy to the network. Layout The 8.5 km (5 mile) long conveyor takes the -200 mm (-8 in.) lignite from the primary crushing plant located near the mine to the central, final crushing plant located in the stockyard area near the power station. The drive and belt tensioning assemblies are situated near the tail end of the flight. The high voltage switchgear is housed in a room in the primary crushing plant build¬ing upstream from the conveyor flight. The frequency converters are installed in the low voltage switchgear room located below the control room within the primary crushing plant building. MR. FOOTE: This paper deals with blasting and mechanical loading. The Union Pacific Coal Company does all of its blasting with permissible powder and electric shooting, but this paper deals principally with blasting in connection with mechanical loading. With the introduction of mechanical loading into the coal fields of southern Wyoming one of the main problems to be taken into consideration was the drilling and blasting of the coal. The methods used in blasting coal for hand loading were found to be ill adapted to the mechanical practice, so numerous tests were conducted from time to time to determine a system or systems whereby the coal might be blasted in a form to be easily handled by the loading units. The general practice in blasting coal for hand loading, for example in a room 24 feet wide and seven feet high with an undercut of seven feet, would be to shoot one or two strong breaking shots in the center and one on each rib. While much of the cut would be blasted down in good lump, some coal would be left hanging at the back and ribs. With hand loading, the miners would have time to pull this coal down with a pick between cars and eventually would clean up the place ready for the cutting machine. The loading machine, however, cannot get this coal down and its operation would be delayed while the men were doing the necessary pick work.

A MELT of pure electrolytic iron with about 0.4 per cent. sulfur and 7 per cent. manganese was prepared in connection with a study of inclusions in iron. The alloy darkened rapidly when etched with a 10 per cent. alcoholic solution of nitric acid, and microscopic examination revealed the presence of a semimartensitic, semi-Widmanstättian structure (Figs. 1 and 2) closely resembling the structures found by Benedicks in his artificially prepared "meteoric iron." 1 The structures found by Benedicks were readily explained by the presence in his alloy of the two well known iron-nickel solid solutions, taenite and kamacite, and of their eutectoid (?) aggregate, plessite. By analogy, one would infer the existence of similar phases in the iron-manganese alloy just described, such as inference being strengthened by the similarity displayed in many ways by nickel and manganese in their effects on iron. IRON-MANGANESE ALLOTS ARE REGARDED AS HOMOGENEOUS Heterogeneity of iron-manganese alloys has not been recognized heretofore, judging from the data of standard metallographic books and those of original papers. In fact, iron and manganese are quite generally regarded as completely miscible in the solid state. Dr. Rosenhain,2 for example, writes: Alloys of group (a), of which those of gold-silver, iron-manganese, and copper-nickel are examples, when allowed to crystallize sufficiently slowly to attain their condition of final equilibrium, present a microstructure exactly similar to that of a pure metal-the homogeneous character of the molten solution is in that case so completely maintained that the microscope cannot detect the presence of any second constituent.

An exchange of coal mine specialists was made with the USSR under an "Agreement on Exchanges and Cooperation in Scientific, Technical, Cultural, and other Fields for 1972-73," which was signed by President Nixon and Chairman Breshnev on April 11, 1972.* This exchange, in the field of coal mine safety and scientific research in hazard control technologies, was one of 16 technical exchanges covered under the above agreement. A six-man USA delegation visited the Soviet Union from September 9 to September 21, 1973. The delegation visited four deep mines, three in the Donets Basin and one in the Moscow Basin, a State Safety Research Institute, a Mine Research Station and associated Research and Design Institute, two Research and Design mining equipment institutes, and a Trade Union-sponsored health sanitarium. In Moscow, the delegation received a briefing on the Soviet coal industry from First Deputy Minister Vladimir Fedanov. A similar briefing was given to us on the Donets coal basin by the Deputy Minister S. Saratikyanz of the Ukrainian Coal Ministry. Lengthy technical discussions were held with the mines staff and research personnel at the institutes we visited. In addition, we had detailed discussions with key staff members of two combinats "Donetskugol" and "Tulaugol." In all these meetings, principal topics were matters of safety related to hazards associated with face mechanization, coal transport, methane gas control measures, gas outbursts, coal and rock outbursts, fire fighting add control, explosion suppression and control measures and other related hazard factors. There was also much discussion on miner training, miner's attitudes toward safety and accident prevention practices, and preparation and enforcement of safety rules and regulations. The delegation was very warmly received and constant attention was given to our needs. Our numerous questions were answered with candor although quite often in not as much detail as we would have liked.

This article discusses the effect of physical and chemical modifications of starches on the anionic and cationic flotation of silica from oxidized iron ores and magnetite-taconite concentrates, and the results of the interaction of starch, pH, and calcium ions on the flocculation, clarification, and filtration of iron ore slimes and magnetite-taconite tailings. Starches, particularly when anionically modified, were found to be effective depressants in anionic silica flotation. British gums and dextrins were beneficial for oxidized iron ores, but none of the starches or starch derivatives appeared to have any effect on magnetite-taconite concentrates. The flocculation and filtration of iron ore slimes were most strongly affected by the level of starch, to a lesser degree by the pH, and were virtually independent of the level of calcium chloride. The clarification of iron ore slimes was complexly dependent on these three factors. The flocculation of magnetite-taconite tailings depended mainly on the level of starch, whereas their clarification depended on the level of lime. As previously reported in the literature, selective flocculation and partial upgrading of a semi-taconite could be readily attained with starch and calcium chloride.

Recent publication of United States Bureau of Mines figures showed that the sand and gravel (3) industry is the largest single mining industry in the United States in term of yearly tonnage produced. The yearly production of over 500,000,000 tons per year now exceed bituminous coal production. This disclosure caught unawares many observers who have not been following closely the rapid-growth of this phase of mining. Along with this steady growth in production, the sand and gravel industry has gone through an accelerated and varied program of beneficiation in a period of the last ten years.

This report summarizes the results of preliminary mineral-dressing studies by the Bureau of Mines on five samples of copper-bearing ore from various Alaska de-posits. The work on each sample was not extensive enough to warrant individual publication. The results, however, indicate the possibilities and limitations of concentration of the respective ores. The information therefore may be helpful in future development of these ore bodies. Four of the five samples tested were submitted to the laboratory by engineers of the Bureau of Mines as part of the examinations and survey investigations of strategic-mineral deposits in Alaska. This program is conducted to assist development of mineral resources in the Territory and particularly to aid economic exploitation of marginal or complex ores. The fifth sample was submitted by engineers of the Defense Minerals Exploration Administration.

"Failures of coal ribs are major hazards in underground coal mines. For the period of 2010 to 2014, rib falls were the leading cause of groundfall fatalities and accounted for 35% of all groundfall-related fatalities. Currently, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is conducting a research project to develop an engineering-based design methodology for rib control in underground coal mines to reduce rib fall accidents and fatalities. Numerical models can be used as part of the design methodology provided the models are appropriately calibrated and verified.This paper presents a coal rib model to simulate the mechanism of coal deformation and fracturing that can lead to stress-driven rib falls. The proposed coal rib model was calibrated against published data from an instrumented rib site at the West Cliff Mine in Australia. Fracturing of the coal rib was defined by critical VALUES (of plastic shear strain of the coal material and rib displacement. A critical plastic shear strain of 2.8% and a sudden increase of rib displacement of 30 to 45 mm were sufficient to develop a fracture plane in the rib model. Accordingly, a discontinuous rib deformation was achieved and it compared favorably against field monitoring data.INTRODUCTIONCoal ribs are the vertical walls of coal formed when entries are developed in a coal bed. Failures of coal ribs are a major hazard in underground coal mines. Furthermore, failing ribs can contribute indirectly to roof and floor instability by increasing opening widths across intersections and entryways. Over the last 18 years, there has been a continual occurrence of injuries and fatalities in underground coal mines due to rib falls. For the period of 2010 to 2014, rib falls (excluding longwall face failure and bursts) were the leading cause of ground fall fatalities and accounted for 35% of all groundfall-related fatalities (MSHA, 2015)."

Potential cement raw materials are widely distributed but deposit size, quality, transport, market and environmental considerations are important in determining economic value. Major production locations are in a variety of geological environments ranging from Lower Paleozoic crystalline limestones to Tertiary and Recent polyzoal limestones and limesands, both onshore and offshore. Raw material transportation is by road, rail, sea, aerial ropeway and pipeline; road/rail transportation of the finished product is traditional but movement by sea of clinker and cement is increasingly a feature of the industry.

The Bureau of Mines studied the compaction characteristics of metal and nonmetal tailings. Densities of the tailings and zone of compaction influence, compactive effort, and cost of equipment are related to changes in the factor of safety for specific grain-sized tailings and embankment configurations. Field testing was accomplished in two distinct phases. The first phase investigated the effectiveness of using a nuclear gauge on metal and nonmetal tailings to produce rapid, instantaneous measurements of moisture content, wet density, and dry density. The results of the nuclear gauge testing are presented in chapter 1. Chapter 2 presents a comparison of the compactive effectiveness of three different pieces of construction equipment on a coarse-grained metal tailings pond. The three pieces of equipment chosen for study were a DBH track-mounted dozer, a DSOO rubber-tired dozer, and a SP848 vibratory smooth-drum compactor.

This paper is one of a series being prepared for and published by the United States Bureau of Mines describing the mining and treatment methods and costs obtained in sand and gravel plants throughout the United States. These papers are designed to disseminate technical information regarding the methods used. The cost tabulations represent operating expenditures only and not total costs. It is recognized that publication of total costs might in many instances cause embarrassment to individual operators as well as to the industry as a whole. On the other hand operating costs are essential to the technical discussion and study of the methods employed. The attention of the reader is specifically called to this differentiation in order that no misunderstanding of the scope of the cost tabulations shall ensue.

Ilmenite (iron titanate) is the source of over 90% of all the titanium produced in the world today. At some point during production of titanium dioxide or titanium metal the iron impurity must be removed. Too often it becomes a waste instead of a product. DuPont and MINPRO have developed a solid-state process which separates the iron and titanium components of ilmenite into different high-purity powders, which can be separated using conventional mineral processing techniques. The main reactor in this process is a unique high-temperature ball mill, where the iron segregates from the ilmenite lattice with the assistance of catalytic quantities of He\. The results of lab, pilot plant, theoretical, and scale-up studies are presented and discussed.

Corrosion of GaAs in aqueous electrolytes is a major limitation in implementing GaAs-based photoelectrochemical solar energy conversion systems, In this work, the corrosion behavior was investigated by electrochemical methods and surface analysis approaches, in both H2SO4 and NH3?H2O solutions, Open-circuit measurements showed that the cleaned GaAs surface was very sensitive to water/air, Impedance measurements for n-GaAs showed that an inductive loop only appeared at a high corrosion rate because a reaction intermediate is the oxidant for a further decomposition step in combination with chemical reaction with water, The results suggest that the same corrosion/decomposition mechanism occurred on n-GaAs in the two solutions, When the surface-hole concentration was low, the hole injection or generation process was the rate-determining step, At large reverse bias on n-GaAs, with high-hole concentration, the corrosion rate was limited by a Faradaic adsorption process, involving an adsorbed intermediate, The different surface compositions after corrosion in the two solutions can be explained by the dissolution of As(0), Further oxidation of As(0) to As(III) in NH3?H2O solution is still slow, as suggested from X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis,

A geometallurgical model is currently built in two different ways. The first and the most common way relies on geometallurgical testing, where a large number of samples are analysed for metallurgical response using small-scale laboratory tests, eg Davis tube testing. The second, mineralogical approach focuses on collecting mineralogical information over the orebody and building the metallurgical model based on mineralogy. At Lules University of Technology, Sweden, the latter method has been adopted and taken further in four ongoing PhD studies. The geological model gives modal composition by the help of element-to-mineral conversion and Rietveld X-ray diffraction. Texturally, the orebody is divided into different archetypes, and liberation measurements for each of them are carried out in processing fineness using IncaMineral, a SEM-based technique. The grindability and liberation spectrum of any given geological unit (sample, ore block, domain) are extrapolated from the archetypes. The process model is taken into a liberation level by mass balancing selected metallurgical tests using the particle tracking technique. The approach is general and can be applied to any type of ores. The characteristics of gold leaching from carbonaceous matter by sodium cyanide, and sorption of gold cyanide to carbonaceous matter in autoclaved and non -autoclaved gold ore from Barrick Goldstrike Mines Inc. (BGMI), Nevada, was investigated. Much greater gold cyanide complex sorption was observed for the carbonaceous matter in high preg-robbing ores relative to the low preg-robbing ores. This observation corroborates previous reports that have attributed observed preg-robbing behavior to the carbon in the ore. Gold cyanide complex sorption was found to be reversible for carbonaceous matter from low preg-robbing ore, but was irreversible for carbonaceous matter from high preg-robbing ores. Autoclaving the ore appeared to enhance the sorptive behavior of the carbonaceous matter from both high and low preg-robbing ores.

Devido a seu preço competitivo e alta resistência à fluência e à corrosão, atualmente as colunas dos fornos de reforma são confeccionadas com tubos fundidos por centrifugação de aços inoxidáveis austeníticos da classe HP modificados ao nióbio. Apesar de projetadas para uma vida mínima de 100.000 horas em serviço, falham frequentemente devido a intercorrências operacionais que levam ao superaquecimento localizado, designados surtos de temperatura. No presente trabalho, microscopia eletrônica de varredura (MEV) e microanálise por energia dispersiva de raios-X (EDS) foram utilizadas para estudar duas colunas trincadas após um surto de temperatura. Descobriu-se que o NbC reprecipita na morfologia de pequenas partículas nos sítios onde a fase G foi dissolvida durante o surto de temperatura. Desta forma estas partículas servem como marcadores microestruturais da ocorrência do surto.

This report presents experimental work conducted on a number of coals found within the boundaries of the Missouri River Basin, which were, to an extent, a selection of coals typical of that region. In the min, the laboratory work falls into three general classifications: (1) Laboratory distillation assay of coal to establish yields on carbonization; (2) chemical analyses of the coal samples before drying or carbonization; and (3) chemical analyses of the products of carbonization. It will be seen in the following discussion that these data derived from the small-scale laboratory apparatus are useful in predicting yields from pilot plants or industrial units. Coal is produced in about 48 general areas or mining fields in the Western States, of which approximately 18 fall within the limits of the Missouri Basin.3/ Beginning with the Northern Colorado field, through the Central and Western Wyoming fields, the coal is principally bituminous and subbituminous rank. The western Montana coals are also of these ranks. Progressing northeast from central Wyoming the coal decreases in rank, as shown by the subbituminous C coals of the Gillette field in northern Wyoming and the lignites of eastern Montana and North Dakota.
