Um estudo visando à caracterização metalográfica e metalúrgica foi realizado em um aço ARBL (alta resistência e baixa liga) tipo X80, soldado com o processo arame tubular (FCAW) robotizado, com três diferentes níveis de energia de soldagem. Para tal foram utilizadas técnicas de metalografia óptica e microdureza Vickers (Hv). Foram depositados cordões de solda em forma de camadas sobre chapas do aço X80, variando a energia de soldagem e sem pré-aquecimento, no estado como soldado. Os resultados mostram que a técnica de sobreposição utilizada, com baixa e média energia de soldagem, não foi suficientemente adequada para melhorar as propriedades metalúrgicas dos cordões depositados anteriormente, inclusive da ZTA do metal de base.Os cordões depositados com alta energia de soldagem promoveram crescimento do tamanho de grão da GGZTA do aço X80 com a consequente diminuição da resistência ao impacto.Este trabalho da subsídios para uma melhor compreensão das soldas multipasses.

Conventional treatment of oxide and oxidised sulphide minerals by flotation involves the use of sodium sulphide for sulphidisation. Sodium sulphide is generally applied in a "slug" dosing fashion with manual regulation. However, it is recognised that "over addition" or "under addition" of sulphidising reagent can result in poor flotation recoveries. Thus, control of sodium sulphide additions is an important aspect of a sulphidisation circuit, both commercially and metallurgically. In any plant where the flotation feed is "constant" it is possible to operate at a constant rate of addition of sodium sulphide. In actual plant practice, however, it is difficult to maintain a truly constant feed for any reasonable duration because this implies not only a constant feed-rate, but also constant mineral composition and particle size range. These factors can vary significantly and ideally require corresponding variations in the additions of sodium sulphide to maintain optimum recoveries. To cope with variations in the feed, it is essential to have automatic rather than manual regulation of the sulphide reagent addition. The CPS process achieves this control by utilising a sulphide ion-selective electrode as a control instrument in sulphidisation. The CPS process which uses a selective electrode, enables the sulphide ion concentration in the flotation pulp to be monitored and controlled continuously throughout the stage of sulphidisation.

THE John Fritz Medal Board of Award, at its regu¬lar annual meeting Oct. 19, awarded its gold medal to Herbert Clark Hoover. Thus ended a process of selection begun a few years ago. The Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with three Minnesota agencies (Department of Natural Resources, Geological Survey, and the Iron Range Resources and Rehabilitation Board), investigated the potential of using glacial lake clay from Minnesota, as well as other areas, as a binder for iron ore pellets. The best clay-characterizing procedures for predicting binder effectiveness were the cation exchange capacity (CEC) using the methylene blue method and the plate water absorption test (PWAT). The best clay binder was found in the Red River Valley. However, compared to a typical western bentonite at the 0.5-pct-addition level, addition of about 2 pct Minnesota clay was required to obtain comparable unfired (green) pellet strengths. Soda ash addition only slightly improved the binding properties of Minnesota clay, but considerable improvement was obtained by the addition of a small quantity of water absorbing organic compounds. For example, with a mixture of 0.5 pct Minnesota clay or paint rock and 0.1 pct pregelatinized starch, the unfired and fired physical pellet properties were about the same as with 0.5 pct of typical western bentonite. The reduction rate at the 40-pct reduction level and the percentage of plus 6.3-mm particles from the reduction disintegration index test were also about the same.

The value of mineral production in Alabama increased 1 percent above the record high set in 1965. Alabama ranked second among the States in the production of bauxite, third in the production of masonry cement, native asphalt, and scrap mica, sixth in the production of portland cement, ninth in the production of iron ore, and tenth in the production of lime. The mineral industry of Alabama was dominated by the mining and processing of coal and stone, the manufacturing of cement, and the production of crude petroleum. These industries accounted for 87 percent of the State's total value of mineral production, compared with 85 percent in 1965.

Geological assessment of active mine faces enables ore grade control, geological modelling and exploration planning. Monitoring of the mine advancement at every drill-blast-muck cycle allows for effective production management. However, geological assessments are performed infrequently due to the need to travel to active mine faces, and detailed surveys to map the mine progress are performed at the end of the month. Instant Mine Modeller (iMM) is a portable ruggedized stereo-vision system that creates photo-realistic three-dimensional models of underground mine faces on-site. The 3D models are generated automatically within minutes and can be viewed underground and annotated with geological information. The overall ore percentages of the face are calculated automatically for grade control. Annotated 3D models are located in the mine coordinate system and can be imported into mine management systems. iMM allows for daily monitoring of the mine progress and geology, and for re-visiting the mine virtually as it existed. iMM has been deployed in an underground hard rock mine for 18 months, and it effectively brings the underground work face into mine management offices enabling the right decisions at the right time. iMM has demonstrated benefits to various mine processes including grade control, geological mapping, 3D photo-realistic as-built and production volume.

"INTRODUCTION Moisture can be a villain, so new technologies have been explored to make more viable the production of high moisture iron ores. The current work presents the attempt of the utilization of a superabsorbent polymer (SAP) to aid in the screening process and in the ore handling process, such as stockpiles reclaiming and vessels/trains discharge in sub-zero temperature conditions. The results have shown that the polymer can be used in certain cases to improve productivity and increase safety in the process of handling the material (by increasing the TML). However, for size separation no advantages were found upon the use of the polymers. WATER ADSORPTION MECHANISMS The use of water in mineral processing is constant as its utilization brings an increase in the efficiency of separation. Although we have better results in the processing with water, materials with a high content of “natural” moisture can be very difficult to be treated by the conventional methods of separation. Nowadays many studies have been conducted in order to understand the effect of adsorption of water in the particles of complex minerals. Those studies have being divided in many different lines of research such as contact angle of a drop of water and the surface of the mineral to determine hydrophobicity, the particle size distribution and the porosity of particles. Mainly two forms of adsorption of water by the particles are possible: one the water is retained inside porosity of the particles. Laboratory tests developed in China have showed that capillary adsorption is faster in coarser particles that achieve the saturation degree earlier than finer particles (Xuewei Lv et al., 2011). The so called non-porous model considers the effect of water in the bulk sample of iron ores, in a physical connection when all the water works as a binder between particles as shown in the figure 1.If we take into account the compressibility of the system and compaction due to the weight of the bed over the particles, the thickness of the water film between particles is the same but the volume inside different particle size systems is much higher than in a system with particles of same size."

Almost every form of iron ore and carbon material has been used as a raw material in the production of pig iron in electric reduction furnaces. Experience derived from the operation of the large 33,000-kva. Tysland-Hole furnaces, however, indicates that production results are very much influenced by the raw material conditions. The author presents the principle pattern of the metallurgical structure of the interior of an electric pig iron furnace. On the basis of this, he discusses the variations of electrical and metallurgical conditions for the process which will take place with changing raw materials. The formation of a coke bed underneath the electrodes, and its influence on the furnace operation, is illustrated. Bougainville Copper Limited operates a porphyry copper mine in Papua New Guinea. The waste dumps will contain 400 to 500 million tomes of rock at the end of nine life. The direct retorting of zinc sulfide concentrates in the presence of lime and carbon was examined on a laboratory scale with ten-gram charges of loose mix or fifteen-gram ones of pellets. A slow stream of nitrogen swept through the furnace tube over the boat of reactants, carrying with it the zinc vapor, which condensed on a rolled-up steel sheet near the exit, permitting weight of zinc produced to be obtained after completion of a run. Variables explored were percent of theoretical reagents, temperature, and time. During the runs gas samples were analysed periodically, and the content of CO2, CO and nitrogen were obtained. The quantities of the carbon gases could be calculated because the nitogen flow rate was measured. The gases were also examined for sulfur species, but neither COS nor SO2 could be detected at maximum sensitivity. Zinc recovery increased with excess carbon and lime and with temperature. It ranged from 77% at a ten percent deficiency to 90% at a ten percent excess at 1100°C. Going to 1200°C and theoretical reagents gave 93% recovery. Increasing time from 200 minutes to 300 minutes increased zinc yield by up to 10%. Results from sphalerite and a commercial concentrate from AMAX gave generally similar results. The reaction rate of zinc sulfide as sphalerite and of calcined sphalerite indicated that the latter reacted almost twice as fast, and recovery of zinc was five percent higher. Though the retorting step using sulfide, lime, and carbon proved to be non-polluting, it was feared that on storage the calcium sulfide in the residues would decompose, giving off noxious gases. Consequently the stabilization of the residues by oxidation was essayed. Because of the presence of unreacted zinc sulfide, the first product of oxidation was S02. Reaction of CaS to CaSO4 was incomplete, going from 20% at 800°C to 90% at 1200°C. Thus the non-polluting nature of the process as a whole is in doubt, and its economics are likely to be unfavorable compared to the traditional way of calcining the concentrates, followed by retorting of the oxide with carbon.

This report covers investigations of the Bureau of Mines for the period of June 15, 1952, to June 15, 1953, on a research project for the Materials Laboratory, Wright Patterson Air Force Base, Dayton, Ohio. The primary purpose of this investigation was to make high-purity chromium-base alloys having room-temperature ductility and high-temperature strength. The Nonferrous Metals Branch of the Bureau of Mines, Albany, Oreg., has, during the past 7 years, developed on a laboratory scale a hydrogen treatment method for making high-purity chromium that can be fabricated into thin sheet and wire. This material can be bent at room temperature. The object of this investigation was to use this material to develop improved chromium-rich alloys for high-temperature uses.

"INTRODUCTION Project Overview The Southeast Collector (SeC) is a new 15km long 3.0m internal diameter wastewater tunnel designed by Hatch Mott MacDonald (HMM) that twins the existing 2.6m diameter York-Durham Sewage System (YDSS) tunnel. Both sewage tunnels are located north of the City of Toronto in Ontario, Canada. The SeC provides much needed conveyance capacity for the rapidly growing York Region population, supporting development until 2036 and increasing sewage system security (Hatch Mott MacDonald and AECOM 2011). Construction of the SeC will also permit flows of the twinned section of the YDSS to be bypassed in order to clean, inspect and carry out any essential maintenance within the YDSS tunnel. Although owned and operated by York Region, the SeC spans two regional municipalities beginning upstream from the intersection of Ninth Line and Rouge Bank Drive in the City of Markham in York Region to the downstream Finch Avenue and Valley Farm Road intersection in the City of Pickering in Durham Region. See Figure 1 for the SeC and YDSS alignment. The project includes 19 shafts and chambers with depths ranging from 8 to 48m in addition to seven facilities supporting the operation and maintenance of the sewer. The construction contract was awarded to Strabag Inc. in July 2011 for $291M CAD. Construction Management services were provided by a joint venture team of Hatch Mott MacDonald and AECOM. Existing York-Durham Sewage System The YDSS tunnel was completed in 1979 and was constructed using an open shielded TBM with ribs and lagging temporary support, followed by installation of a 380mm thick unreinforced cast-in-place (CIP) concrete final lining. The YDSS sewer system has numerous connections that accumulate flows from various urban areas within York Region. The section of the YDSS twinned by the SeC flows under gravity conditions and had been putting a strain on the municipality’s potential for population and development growth having reached its maximum capacity of 420 ML/d. According to the York Region’s Water and Wastewater Master Plan, the existing YDSS would not have been able to handle wet weather flows past 2016 (Genivar and XCG Consultants 2009). The dependability of this section of the YDSS is also of concern because it is the main and critical connection between the sewer systems upstream and the downstream Duffin Creek Water Pollution Control Plant (WPCP)."

O aço inoxidável duplex combina as propriedades mecânicas da ferrita à resistência à corrosão da austenita, sendo muito utilizado em aplicações industriais que requerem um bom desempenho quanto a essas propriedades. Quando esse aço é submetido a ciclos térmicos, fases secundárias podem se precipitar, o que causa a deterioração de suas propriedades. Dentre as fases que podem surgir, a fase sigma é a de maior relevância. O presente trabalho tem como objetivo avaliar e quantificar a precipitação da fase sigma quando o aço duplex UNS 31803 é submetido ao recozimento em diferentes temperaturas. Para essa análise foram utilizados a microscopia óptica e eletrônica, difração por elétrons retroespalhados, difração de raios - X, e espectometria de raios - X por dispersão em energia. Observou - se a presença da fase sigma em três das quatro condições adotadas no trabalho. A presença mais acentuada da fase foi observada na condição em que a velocidade de precipitação é máxima.

Investigation of an extensive deposit of chromite-bearing actinolite-talc schist situated on the summit of Casper Mountain, 10 miles south of Casper, Wyo., was one of the first projects Undertaken by the Bureau of Mines under the Strategic Materials Act (Public 117, 76th Cong., Ch. 190, 1st sess.), for which an appropriation became available August 9, 1939. During the previous summer; the Geological Survey? made? a magnetometrical survey of the area in which the schist occurred. It was exposed in several small lenses and two larger ones aggregating about 19?acres in area. Although the occurrence of chromite here had been known for many years, the only work done on the deposit was the digging of? a few shallow pits on some of the more promising outcrops. From August 23 to December 3, 1939, the Bureau of Mines investigated the larger of the two main schist bodies. Twenty-four trenches having a total length of 8,073 feet were dug across the deposit, and its subsurface extension was explored by 3,623 feet of diamond drilling. Over 32 tons of samples were shipped to the Metallurgical Division of the Bureau of Mines at Reno, Nev., for reduction, analysis, and ore testing. In all, there were 853 individual samples. Geological maps, based upon examination of outcrops, trenches, and drill cores, as well as a contour map of the area were made by the Geological Survey.
