THE preparation of this paper is in response to many requests for in-formation on the mining and smelting developments which have been carried on for the past three years or more by the Chromium Mining and Smelting Corporation of Canada. By way of introduction, the following paragraphs, relating to the early history and present status of the chrome-mining industry in the United States, are of interest. They are quoted from Bulletin No. 76 of the California State Mining Bureau, published in August, 1918: 'Chromium was discovered about 1797 by a French chemist, Louis Nicolaus Vauquelin, in ore from Siberia. From that time until 1827, the Urals, in the region of Ekaterinburg, supplied the chromium used in . Europe. In the summer of 1827, as the historian advises us, Isaac Tyson, Jr., saw in a Baltimore market-place a cart containing a cider barrel, which was held from rolling about by some heavy black stones. He had made a study of such stones at the first-known American locality, the Bare hills near his father's home, six miles from Baltimore, and he recognized the black stones as chromite. On inquiry, he found the chromite came from the Reed farm in Harford county, 27 miles northeast of Baltimore. At this time, Tyson was one of the very few men in the country who knew the value of chromite, and in the next few years he took full advantage of this knowledge. He immediately bought the Reed farm. He found about 30 tons of float-ore on the surface, but there was no outcrop of ore in place. Never-theless, he sank a shaft, and at a depth of eight feet struck an ore-pocket which proved to be 80 ft. long, 25 ft. wide, and 8 ft. in maximum thickness. His next discovery was of placer chromite in the sands in the beds of brooks on an estate called Soldiers' Delight, 16 miles northwest of Baltimore. Thus far, Tyson's observations had shown him that chromite occurred apparently only in serpentine areas. His explorations were now leading him farther afield. In 1828, he found on the Wood Farm, in Lancaster county, Pennsylvania, a deposit of float chromite which led him to lease the ore-right of the farm, which he finally purChased in 1832. Here he developed the famous Wood mine, the largest single producer of chromite in the world.

THE oxidation resistance of chromium and Fe-Cr alloys is increased by small additions of yttrium or other rare earth metals.1,2 In addition, the presence of the additives increases the resistance of these alloys to spalling of the external oxide above 1000°C. This ability to prevent spalling appears to be related to the formation of an internal oxide in alloys containing yttrium or the other rare earth metals. The internal oxide is found in the form of a filamentary growth concentrated in the grain boundaries of the unoxidized metal. In alloys containing yttrium this internal oxide was found to be either Y2O3 Or YCrO3.' In an earlier report,' the growth of the external oxide was found to be controlled by diffusion through the oxide layer. Thermal balance studies were used to establish the kinetics of external oxide formation. In this related study the rate of growth of the internal filamentary oxide has also been studied. The results obtained indicate that the growth of the internal oxide is also diffusion controlled. Internal oxidation appears to occur in at least two ways. Using copper alloys containing small amounts of silicon, Rhines 3 found that between 600" and 1000oC a subscale was formed which consisted of particles of silica dispersed in the metallic matrix. The conditions requisite to internal oxidation as suggested by Rhines are: 1) a solubility of oxygen in the alloy, 2) the ability of oxygen to diffuse at an appreciable rate into the alloy, 3) the possibility of the formation by the alloying element of an oxide more stable than the oxide of the host metal, and 4) a relatively low solubility of this oxide in the metal. These conditions are fulfilled for a number of other copper alloys.3-5 Furthermore, the relationship between the depth to which the internal oxide is formed and the oxidation time follows the simple parabolic law.6 The activation energy for copper containing small amounts of silicon, germanium, iron, or manganese as calculated from Rhines data6 is about 48 kcal per mole. In some cases the internal oxide is found segregated at the grain boundaries, especially near the the surface. Observations of this type of oxide formation have been reported by stead,7 Rhines,* and Lustman. Barium anomalies in drainage sediments can act as indicators of barite mineralization and path- finders for lead-zinc mineralization. Their detection in an arid climate has been investigated in two areas of Saudi Arabia. At Rabigh, 150 km north of Jeddah, barium anomalies found in wadi sediments reflect barite veins which occupy Tertiary faults in Precambrian metavolcanics and granodiorite. In the Wadi ad Dawasir area, 650 km east of Jeddah, the sediments of wadis draining the Jabal Tuwayq escarpment have been found to contain anomalous concentrations of barium derived from diagenetic barite in the Sudair formation siltstones and shales. Barium dispersion in these wadis is predominantly clastic. Near to the source rocks, barium occurs in relatively coarse grains of barite. Owing to the three well-developed cleavages of barite, its crystals readily break into cleavage flakes during fluvial transport in flash floods; as a result, the longest anomalous dispersion trains are found in the 250 to 600 um fraction. Wadi sediments finer than 250 um have relatively constant and low barium contents, being dominantly composed of windblown sand.

Muito se tem estudado sobre materiais alternativos, como os compósitos de matriz polimérica reforçados por fibras lignocelulósicas. Isso se justifica pelo fato das fibras naturais terem vantagens no que tange ao meio ambiente, bem como relativo baixo custo. Além disso, a fibra natural apresenta características de interface com a matriz polimérica que favorecem as propriedades mecânicas pela estrutura do compósito. Esse presente trabalho objetiva analisar as propriedades de tração de compósitos de matriz de poliéster reforçados com 10,20 e 30% em fração volumétrica de fibras de cânhamo, que foram preparados alinhando as fibras em moldes e deixando-os curar por 24 horas em temperatura ambiente. Os corpos de prova foram testados numa máquina de ensaios Instron e os resultados mostraram um aumento na tensão máxima de ruptura com o aumento da porcentagem de fibra incorporada.

PbSO4 is a commonly encountered component of the materials used in lead recycling (e.g. battery paste) and in by-products of metallurgical processes (e.g. residues from zinc hydrometallurgy, dust from copper smelting). Smelting of battery paste results in SO2 emission and in generation of significant amounts of hazardous ‘white slag’. Those adverse phenomena can be eliminated by removal of sulphur from the paste. Lead-bearing by-product materials are of polymetallic character with usually low Pb content, which makes lead recovery technologically difficult and uneconomic. However it can be successfully achieved by extraction of lead sulphate from solid phase with triethylenetetramine (TETA) water solutions. That compound has capability for selective solvation of a whole lead sulphate molecule. Virtually pure lead carbonate can be precipitated by means of saturation of lead-loaded aqueous TETA solution with carbon dioxide, and complete regeneration of the extractant is achieved by fixing of sulphate ion into gypsum through operation of calcium hydroxide suspension. The paper presents results of the lab and pilot scale studies into process of battery paste desulphurisation and recovery of lead from the residue of zinc calcine leaching.

"The paper describes the results of stripping of copper production dusts by leaching with aqueous soda, nitric acid solutions and recovery from solutions resulting in the production of lead sulphate, tribasic lead sulfate (TBLS), ammonium perrhenate, zinc, copper-cadmium cake.The combination of two stripping operations under chosen optimal conditions allows the recovery of 98% rhenium, 82% lead, 92 % copper, and 96% zinc and cadmium each. The major amount of rhenium (~ 80%) is recovered at the carbonization stage, and other metals - at the nitric acid leaching stage.Lead sulfate was precipitated by mixing solutions resulting from carbonization and leaching. Tribasic lead sulfate was produced by dissolving lead sulfate in sodium hydroxide solutions. Rhenium was recovered from mother liquor resulting from lead sulfate precipitation by liquid-liquid extraction and zinc was recovered from raffinates. Trialkylamine (TAA) was used as an extractant for rhenium recovery and di-2- ethylhexylphosphoric acid was used for zinc recovery. Optimal liquid-liquid extraction parameters have been defined allowing the recovery of 96% rhenium in crude ammonium perrhenate and 94% zinc in sulfuric acid solution. Based on the experimental data, the flowchart for dust processing to produce salable products - lead, rhenium, zinc salts has been suggested."

Backfill is usually considered a necessary evil that contributes little to the principal objective of the operation, ore production. Consequently, it is relegated to an auxiliary role in the operation with minimal equipment and resource allocation in planning and is only superficially considered during feasibility studies. In many mines, the inadequacy of the design and operation of the backfill system ultimately leads to frequent delays, excessive costs and, in the worst cases, major instabilities which result in reduced ore production and lost or unrecoverable ore reserves. The primary objective of backfill is to prevent the progressive deterioration of mined out excavations. With the exception of narrow vein operations, it is too weak to alter the mining induced stress regime and control stress concentrations caused by stope extractions. However, the direct benefits of backfill include the possibility to consider a wider range of mining methods, recovery of 100 per cent of the planned resource and the selection of a stoping sequence that minimises the regional stability problems that cause production shortfalls in the later years of mine production. Indirectly, backfill is a practical means of solving other issues, such as waste disposal, that impact the viability of mining. In Australia, the geotechnical conditions of many mines are becoming more difficult and increased attention to the importance of backfill is warranted. This paper describes realistic aspects of backfilling and the positive impacts a well co-ordinated fill system can have on mining activities as a whole. Examples are presented where an integrated approach to backfill systems have offered significant benefits to the operation.

The fundamental error associated to the sampling of heterogeneous ore particles is unavoidable and can only be minimized by an adequate selection of the sample mass and/or size reduction of the sample before division into sub samples for testing or assaying. The preparation of ore batches to carry out the mineral processing evaluation of an ore is a sampling process. The fundamental error associated with the division of the ore into batches is responsible for the differences in the composition of the batches. This paper attempts by various means to assess the reproducibility of the gold content of test batches prepared from a gold ore sample. The results of the investigation shows that for fine gold grain sizes the variability in the composition of the batches is less than that predicted by Gy?s formula and that the gold grain size is a strategic information in the assessment of the gold content variability of test batches.

It was decided to demonstrate the use of latex as a soil sealant by irrigating three small plots at Lanse coded 03A on the west of Brown's run, 3C on the east of the stream, and SB, an area on the spoil bank. Earlier plans to sprinkle latex on twenty acres of the side were abandoned because of easement difficulties. On the basis of results from laboratory soil columns and small plot experiments at Lanse, Naugatex J-3471 was the latex of choice. The irrigation system consisted of plastic pipe (two inch size) for the main line from the water meter to the irrigation area because of lower price and ease of handling. Because the municipal water supply was limited to 20 gpm, low-volume 14V-LA-TNT Rainbow sprinklers were specified with low angle 20° 3/32 inch nozzles to reduce wind effects. At the expected nozzle pressure of 50 psig, each sprinkler covers a 56 foot diameter area at a delivery rate of 1.64 gpm. Each of the three test areas was covered with twelve sprinklers, six used with water alone as a control area and six used with latex and subsequent water spraying. One-quarterturn inlet valves were positioned on the main lines leading to each area. Flow to the treated and untreated areas was set at 10 gpm by Dole flow control valves in the' main entry lateral to each of the six sprinklers. To avoid the use of dilution tanks, a Moyno pump operated by a 1/2 HP, 1140 rpm 5:1 reducing drive was used to deliver 1/2 gpm 48% latex for mixing with 10 gpm water. A 3500 watt gasoline generator provided power for pump and light. Latex was applied at night to take advantage of the lower evaporation and higher humidity. Neutron gauge access tubes were placed in orthogonal arrangement in the areas that were irrigated, with four tubes in the section that were sprinkled with latex and four tubes in the untreated irrigation section in each of the three locations. Each tube, five and one-half feet long and sealed at one end with a plug welded in place, was inserted five feet into the ground in a cored hole. In each irrigation area, the left section of six sprinklers spread the dilute latex while the right section sprinkled the same amount of water to serve as a control plot. As shown in Figure 7 each sprinkler has a 56-foot sprinkling diameter at 50 psig design water pressure. The sprinklers are 30 feet apart on the laterals and 35 feet apart between the laterals. The access tubes (coded AT on Figure 7) were placed in comparable spots on the two sections of each area, so that four soil moisture measurements on the two sections could be compared. Bouyoucos resistance blocks (BB) were also placed in areas 03A and 3C at one, two and three foot depths, but not on the spoil bank area.

This paper will outline the problems and solutions of the new generation washeries, as well as the recent technological advances which are being considered for future coal preparation plants. The subjects to be covered will include: - reasons for considering coal preparation plants; - raw coal crushing and handling systems; - types of coal cleaning equipment being used versus new equipment being considered; - fine coal circuit sizing; - clean coal centrifuging and dewatering; - thermal dryer problems and changes; - fine refuse dewatering systems; - clean coal storage problems and changes; - materials handling within the plants; and - control systems for preparation plants. The design and integration of the various circuits that form a modern coal preparation plant have led to the creation of an exciting new field of industrial research. As the need for energy sources increases, efficient methods of preparing coals for specific markets will become more important.

"While there is a large industry based on recovering platinum group metals (PGM) from complex sulphide ores containing Cu and Ni, there is little information on the thermodynamics of the matte phase formed on smelting the ore and in particular the behaviour of Pt in the matte.The equilibrium between metallic platinum and industrial mattes was studied in a series of experiments where a small quantity of matte (5g) and platinum foil of 150 µm thickness (0.5 g) were equilibrated in magnesia crucibles at 1400°C under conditions where the oxygen and sulphur partial pressures were fixed.The chemical composition of the phases was determined from EDS analysis using a scanning electron microscope. Line scans were initially used to confirm that the foils had attained a uniform composition across their thickness. The composition of the matte was determined from analysis of an area of matte including the small metallic droplets and dendrites.The results of the equilibrium study are presented in terms of how the oxygen and the sulphur pressure affect the distribution of Pt, between the matte and the alloy foil (Lmatte/alloy). Other variables investigated were matte chemistry, i.e., the Fe content and the temperature. The activities of platinum in the mattes were calculated using a regular solution model describing the activity-composition relationship in the alloy."

Gold and precious stones were mined in Egypt in prehistoric times. This mining, carried on at intervals, extended over thousands of years, until about 1300 A. D. Then ensued a dormant period of several hundred yoars. In the mean- time Europe made great rogress in mining practice, metallurgy, and geology and sent out various expeditions during the nineteenth century to investigate ancient mines. But the exploratory work produced no material results, and not until the beginning of the present century did actual mining recommence. The reopening of old gold mines in Rhodesia aroused interest in London and Paris, and these cities provided the capital necessary for the investigation of the ancient minee in West Africa and Egypt. Speculation resulted in the division of most of the uncultivated area of Egypt and the Sudan into huge concessions, and a number of expeditions were made; but after an unprecedented activity in West Africa, roaction set in, and the flow of capital ceased. There is no single factor that determines the appropriate capacity for a mining project. It is driven by the size of the resource, the capacity of the market, the availability of capital, the availability of power, the availability of water, and a myriad of other considerations. There is also no single solution to the question of how big the project should be. However, to develop a project, the study team needs to select the configuration options that it regards as the best for the project. To be able to make this selection, the study team should consider the range of available options and do so at a level of detail that gives it confidence in the conclusion but does not lead to multiple detailed design exercises. Having considered the range of options, and with a clear definition of the project owner’s objectives and constraints, the work to be carried into feasibility studies can be focused appropriately. This paper discusses the process of completing strategic mine planning to identify project configuration options to assist in the selection of the processing plant throughput rate (Capacity Study) for a large greenfield open pit mine. The processes described in this paper allow for the basis of design to be set for subsequent studies that meets the objectives at a risk profile acceptable to the owner.

This paper describes the ventilation planning that was per- formed at the Barrick Gold Corporation, El lndio Mine. The El lndio Mine is located at an elevation of approximately 4,000 m in the Andes mountains east of the coastal city of La Serena, Chile. The ventilation planning program consisted of a detailed ventilation survey of the mine and the establishment of a correlated com- puter model. A series of network simulations were conducted to determine the optimum position, size, and configuration of new ventilation raises and main fan exhaust system. Modifications to existing mine infrastructure including; driving of drifts, slashing of airways, and positioning of ventilation controls were examined. Detailed costing information was developed to optimize the location of the new main exhaust raises and fan system. The final ventilation system is expected to increase the mine airflow from the existing 157 m=/s to over 315 mls. This increase was necessary to accommodate an expansion in mine production, diesel equipment utilization, and deeper mine development. Furthermore, the increased airflow was required because of the de-rating of diesel equipment and large air volumes necessary to dilute diesel exhaust at high elevation.

Geological logging by mine and exploration geologists involves the application of a logging code that requires a geologist to make a subjective decision to classify a particular rock unit. This will most likely result in inconsistencies in logging that will be difficult to monitor or assess over time. A potential solution to this problem is to have an objective method to determine the true nature of a given rock unit. This can be achieved using portable X-ray fluorescence technology (pXRF), as large geochemical data sets can be collected rapidly and at low cost. Plutonic Gold Mine (Plutonic), Western Australia, has a growing data set of more than 150 000 pXRF multi-element analyses from core and underground face samples, reconciled to Au fire-assay concentration, and logging codes. This study investigates and statistically validates the consistency with which the logging codes have been applied at Plutonic for the last four years, with respect to both Au distribution and other elements. In doing so, we have developed a schema that allows objective logging to occur once core has been sent for assay and analysed by pXRF. Hard rock mining has grown in importance in the Yukon Territory during the last 10 years while Alaskan hard rock mining has declined. One asbestos deposit in Alaska is dormant, but an asbestos deposit 55 miles to the east in the Yukon Territory is being mined by the Clinton Mine Div., Cassiar Asbestos Corp., Ltd. In this Bureau of Mines report, the economics of mining in the two locations were derived using the Clinton mine as a model. Both deposits were assumed to be of equal size and mined by similar methods. Conventional open pit mining and processing methods were assumed, and capital and operating costs were derived using flowsheets and standard costing methods. The estimated cost for the mine, mill, and support facilities in Alaska was about 30 percent more expensive than that in the Yukon Territory. The higher labor rates in Alaska were the primary contributor to the higher construction costs; freight rates added only slightly to the total costs. Approximately two-thirds of the additional annual costs of operating in Alaska were for wages and fringe benefits. The price required for the Alaskan asbestos fiber was $356.65 per ton compared with $287.44 for Yukon fiber, plus or minus 20 percent. A 12 percent discounted cash flow rate of return, 100 percent equity financing, and a rapid writeoff of assets were assumed.

Good mining is central to any approach to value tracking. Good mining occurs where the ore is correctly delineated, measured and fed to the mill. This process is usually referred to as grade control, ore control or quality control. There are now ways to measure the efficiency of this process, such as by using conditional simulation, and a brief synopsis is presented. Resource estimation is the foundation of ore reserve estimation, which should enable useful prediction of the expected metal to be recovered from mining and milling. Significant improvements have resulted from applying new techniques such as the Chain of Mining (CoM) method, which models the mining process. Again, a brief synopsis is presented. Tracking value from the mine through the mill implies a linear sequence of processes that can be modelled. Reality is more complex and there are error components, feedback loops and breaks in the Chain of Value. Modelling the total production process in a number of operations is considered, including the various impacts on producing reconciliations. Procedures are also discussed for handling a number of difficult issues such as: different data supports, stockpiling strategies, blending from multiple ore sources, blast movement and underground ore extraction.

As part of the Federal effort to help maintain an adequate supply of fertilizer minerals, the Bureau of Mines is conducting research to characterize complex, low-grade western phosphate rock and to develop methods for economic recovery of phosphate. The rock varies from soft, friable, altered phosphatic shale to hard, tightly cemented, unaltered phosphate rock. To supplement current beneficiation by sizing, a flotation procedure was devised that included depression of phosphate minerals with H2SiF6 and anionic flotation of carbonate minerals, followed immediately by cationic flotation of silicate minerals. Application of the procedure to several different ores resulted in phosphate concentrates that ranged from 28 to 31 pct P20S in grade and from 60 to 70 pct in phosphate recovery.

Anthracite barley is considerably cheaper than rice. Its use, therefore, is attractive from a cost standpoint, - but its smaller size (through 3/16 inch over 3/32 inch round-mesh screen) makes it more difficult to use on some equipment when fairly high combustion rates are necessary to carry plant loads. Tests wore made in one plant to determine the performance of rice and various types of barley on a chain-grate stoker in a two-arch refractory furnace. In general, the efficiency and capacity increased with increased fuel size and volatile content. This performance is presented in tabular and curve form, together with a short review of the ignition and burning process on chain-grate stokers and a discussion of the operating procedures and limitations during the tests. In this particular installation, higher combustion rates and efficiencies could have been obtained with barley if the grate links had been designed for more uniform air flow through the grate surface. Careful maintenance and operation are particularly necessary for satisfactory results with barley on equipment not especially designed for its use.
