Sandur Schist Belt of Karnataka Craton constitutes a hub of iron ore mining activity. The iron ore deposits of the region are closely associated with Banded Hematite Quartzite (BHQ), Shale, phyllites, & Graywackes. The gradual depletion of high-grade iron ores due to extensive utilization has necessitated the exploitation of low-grade iron ore including BHQ, which are available abundantly in different parts of India. In the present investigation, BHQ samples from Kammaturu mines of Sandur schist belt was studied to assess the possibility of upgrading the iron content to the maximum possible extent, so that it may find the better use in iron and steel industries. The sample collected from the study area analyzing 39.76% Fe, 39.8% SiO2, 0.66% Al2O3, and 1.92% LOI was subjected to beneficiation studies. The mineralogical studies reveals that the samples are predominately consists of hematite as an iron mineral and quartz as gangue mineral. Liberation studies and chemical analysis were carried out prior to the beneficiation process, which is flotation. Cationic Reverse flotation studies were carried out and discussed by varying different process variables such as feed size, depressant, collector cum frother dosage & pH. The results obtained are encouraging with an appreciable improvement in the iron content up to 62.8% Fe with Fe recovery of 50.43%. The concentrate obtained from the flotation can be used for pellet making process.

This paper presents the results of test work performed with a Pacific Electric Motors (PEM) high intensity magnetic separator (20 kilogauss) , a unit capable of separating weakly, as well as strongly, magnetic minerals in the particle size range of sands to clays. Tests were performed on some 40 industrial minerals. With some minerals excellent separations were attained and with others intermediate and poor separations were accomplished. This study is a preliminary survey and many of the intermediate and poor results can be improved as separation problems are worked out with additional test work. It is demonstrated that with a number of industrial minerals high intensity magnetic separation is a viable beneficiation technique that is economic ally feasible.

LIX® 34 liquid ion exchange reagent, one of a totally new class of metal extractants, is discussed in terms of its properties. Specifically, these properties include improved selectivity for copper and greater recovery. Some comparisons to the well known General Mills' LIX® 64N have been made. Particular emphasis is given to treating solutions containing very low copper values and high impurity levels.

THE HOISTING PLANT at the Stobie section of the FroodStobie mine is a two-shaft installation designed to handle a daily production of 18,000 tons of ore at depth. The two vertical shafts are within 100 feet of -each other, an arrangement made to provide the needed capacity and to give flexibility of operation (Figure 1). No. 7 shaft, used for handling men and supplies as well as for hoisting ore, has been sunk to the 3000 level and is served by a manhoist handling two cages and an orehoist with two 14-ton capacity Kimberley skips. No. 8 shaft, so far completed to a depth of 1,900 feet, handles only ore. The hoist is semiautomatic with push-button control and the skips are 15-ton capacity bottom-dump. The ore-loading pocket for first stage hoisting at both shafts is 120 feet below 1,600 lev-el and additional pockets are planned, as the shafts are deepened, at 800 foot intervals down to 4,000 feet.

To keep the net impact positive is critical for sustainable development. For mineral processing industry, the value of a mineral is in the actual value as perceived by the end user. The process designs, investments in technology development all have direct relationship with the value of use and making a net positive impact on our ecosystem The value proposition has shifted towards raw materials and is a big differentiator. The availability of good quality raw material is difficult or is available at a premium. The challenge today is to develop green technologies that make effective and efficient usage of low grade raw materials The low grade raw materials as available pose a significant opportunity for human race for delivering value. They offer an easier reach to a value as perceived in end use but the journey is full of challenges. The first challenge is development of technology for maximizing grade recovery as required by the downstream process. The second challenge is to make the technology viable so that it contributes value to end use and the third challenge is to keep the net impact of the process positive The mining and mineral processing fraternity, being at the beginning of this value chain is set to take the first step in this journey for a tryst with ultimate human well being. "The control of fugitive dust in high-latitude openpit mines is challenging due to unique atmospheric phenomena resulting in complicated flow regimes as well as atmospheric inversion due to the lack of adequate insolation during prolonged winter seasons. In this study, two idealized (one conical and one trapezoidal) three-dimensional openpit mine geometries were simulated for different seasonal conditions using a computational-fluid-dynamics package from Software Cradle. The airflow was solved by Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations using the standard kappa-epsilon turbulence model. The concept of particle tracking was used to predict the flow patterns of dust particles. For various climatic conditions and two different pit geometries, fugitive dust particles varying in size, from PM0.1 to PM10, and concentration were generated at various locations and dispersed by the airflows inside the openpit mine. The amount and location of dust particles inside the pit were reported at various time intervals. In the summer season, airborne dust particles were quickly transported outside the openpit domain. In the winter season, however, the development of atmospheric inversion significantly affected the amount of dust retention inside the openpit domain. IntroductionThe computational-fluid-dynamics (CFD) modeling of openpit mines is challenging. In a recent paper (2015), we presented different constraints and challenges in developing a three-dimensional CFD model. In order to obtain realistic results from a simulation, however, appropriate values of various inputs are required. The simulation results of a three-dimensional nonhydrostatic model by Shi et al. (2000) showed that both the mechanical and thermal forces are important mechanisms, controlling the development of the atmosphere inside an openpit mine. Alvarez et al. (2007) used a CFD model for predicting dust dispersions in a medium-sized limestone quarry, and presented several iso-surfaces of varying dust concentrations using ANSYS CFX. A similar study by Torno et al. (2010) introduced a more sophisticated parameterization of the dust sources. Flores et al. (2014) used an OpenFOAM CFD simulation package to simulate and predict pollutant dispersion in an idealized and an actual openpit mine in Chile with an intense insolation condition. The model was simulated for three different conditions: (1) air-advection (10 m/s, or 33 ft/ sec)-driven mechanical turbulence, (2) surface-heat-flux (240 W/m2, or 76 Btu/ ft2-h)-driven thermal buoyancy and (3) both air-advection- and surfaceheat- flux-driven conditions. The results of the simulations showed that the buoyant currents contribute to the removal of a large percentage of the dust particles. The buoyant currents modify the purely mechanical-turbulence- induced flow pattern and reduce the particle residence time, commonly observed in a purely mechanical turbulent flow (nonbuoyant case)."

Economics and environmental considerations along with the increasing demand of hydrogen encourage development of novel technologies such as plasma processing of hydrocarbons and thermal cracking of natural gas. Plasma discharges, either in thermal or non-thermal regimes are expected to allow low temperature and fuel flexible on-site hydrogen generation. The main drawback of thermal plasma reformers is the high-energy consumption resulting from high-temperature operation. On the other hand, non-thermal plasma, generated by dielectric barrier discharge (DBD), is able to simulate the chemical reactions employing much lower energies than those required by thermal treatment processes. The non-thermal plasma process allows for instance, a direct conversion of methane into hydrogen and carbon black with no CO2 release. The focus of this research was on the GHG-free method of H2 generation in compact non-thermal plasma reactors using low, medium and high permittivity dielectric ceramics. A stable, non-thermal plasma was generated by placing a dielectric ceramic between two electrodes with a 25 thou gap and applying an alternating current of 1-5kHz and voltages of 4-8kV. In order to ensure energetic efficient plasmas, experiments were conducted to analyze the behaviour of different permittivity ceramics. It was found that the dielectric properties of a ceramic, when used in a DBD reactor, have a strong influence on the discharge characteristics, which in turn influence the power consumption. Higher dielectric constant resulted in higher conversion rates of methane (higher yield of hydrogen and carbon). At the same time, the mechanical properties of the dielectric material, which are closely associated with its processability, influenced its resistance to electron bombardment, as well as thermal and mechanical damage. Therefore a reliable ceramic should have good dielectric properties, in addition to good thermo-mechanical stability.

Manganese-oxide minerals occur in irregular pockets distributed through the residual clays of the Cartersville district, which lies 45 miles north-west of Atlanta in Bartow County, Ga. The district produces, or has produced, limonite, barite, specular hematite, ochre, ferruginous manganese, manganiferous iron are, as well as manganese. Bureau of Mines engineers have visited the district on three occasions - in December 1939, February 1941, and October 1942. During the visit of February 1941, 80 tons of samples of manganese-bearing clays were taken from seven properties for ore-dressing tests, which were conducted at the Bureau of Mines laboratory at Rolla, Mo. The. October 1942 visit was for the purpose of reappraising the district in the light of knowledge gained from the ore-dressing studies and to prepare a plan for the district's development. Exploratory drilling was begun in March l943 and was continued until June 1945. Nine properties were explored that, roughly follow a line beginning near Cartersville and extend to a point 2 miles northeast of the village of White. The work consisted of bulldozer trenching, rotary bucket churn drilling, sampling, and analytical determinations. The manganese district is 18 miles long with a maximum width of 7 miles at Cartersville, which lies at the center of the district. The work of the Bureau was confined to the northern half of the district between Cartersville and Pine Log. The properties explored comprise but a small portion of the Potential producing area.

"Field inspections and data relative to the use of rubber-sheathed trailing cables in mines show that much cable is ruined or its probable life shortened by being overheated in service.The length of cable required to make connection from a source of supply to a machine at the face workings may be 100 to 500 feet. As a rule, the cable is carried on a reel and unreeled as required; and thus in most cases soma of the cable is not removed from the reel. The overheating generally occurs in that part of the cable which is left on the reel.Factors that determine the heating of trailing cables are:1. The size of the conductors in the cable.2. The maximum energy to be supplied through the cable, based upon the horsepower of the motor and the degree to which the motor is loaded.3. To determine the potentialities of nickel as a substitute for cobalt in catalysts for the synthesis of hydrocarbons from carbon monoxide and hydrogen, RESULTS The maximum oil yields obtained in bench-scale equipment were as follows: Using 100N1:20Mn:100 kaolin:200 diatomaceous earth catalyst, a maximum yield of 133.8 cm.3/m.3 of pure CO+2H2 was obtained from one pass of the feed gas, With a nickel:cobalt mixed catalyst (Ni:Co - 3:7) having the composition 100(Ni+Co):8MgO: 5Th02:200 diatomaceous earth, a maximum of 172.2 cm.3/m.3 of pure C0+2H2 was obtained.

For many years it has been considered that an average of 50 percent of the coal in the deposits exploited has been recovered. Owing to many changes in mining methods during the past two decades, this study was initiated to obtain an up-to-date measurement of recovery percentage and thus establish part of the basis from which presently recoverable reserves may be estimated. Recovery percentages were determined within mined areas of 200 underground coal mines. These comprised a statistical sample selected to be representative of operating mines in relation to their significance to depletion of reserves. The results ranged from 29 to 91 percent and averaged 57.0 ± 1.7 percent (95-percent confidence limit). Six factors were identified mathematically as significantly affecting recovery percentages: (1) Pillaring system, (2) top rock and conditions, (3) bottom rock and conditions, (4) marketability, (5) coalbed thickness, and (6) productivity. Skill and attitude of mine operators toward recovery, although not measured, were probable factors. Five other variables that were tested did not show any significant relationship with recovery percentages. Also, five mining equipment features were identified, through discussions with mine officials, as affecting adversely recovery percentage at some mines.

Rock falls in coal mines cause many injuries each year. Most of these injuries are not caused by major roof collapses, but from falls of smaller rocks from the immediate top or roof skin. Even though safety professionals and mine operators strive to reduce these types of injuries, there has not been a substantial decrease in the rock fall injury rate over the past decade. Various surface controls are used in mines to control the roof skin. One control that has proven to be very effective is roof screening. Roof screen effectively controls roof skin and provides a high roof surface coverage. Although many mines are reluctant to use screen for primary skin control because of the additional costs of time and materials, others are having great success at controlling both the costs and surface rock. In this study, injury data are presented that show a dramatic reduction in roof skin injuries when screening is used. Much of this success is due to the protection from falling rock that the operators receive from roof screen. Five case studies in which roof screen was used are presented along with the associated costs of materials, impact on bolting advance rates, and potential ergonomic risks. The effects of roof screening on skin control and safety are also included. Finally, this paper provides information about best practices and features of roof bolting machines that affect production and safety.

The celebrations which took place in 1986 to mark South Australia's Jubilee 150 served to focus attention on all aspects of the State's heritage. Until that time the sites and relics of South Aus- tralia's early mines had been generally neglected. Marked by the ruins of enginehouses and littered with the remains of the massive technology of the Industrial Revolution, these sites have now been recognised as containing the threads of a fascinat- ing story. In the early days of settlement the economy of the Colony was based on land and farming. Droughts caused periods of economic depression which were alleviated by chance discoveries of gold, lead, silver, and copper ore. Some of the mines which were opened on the copper deposits were the largest in the world at that time and their names well-known throughout mining circles. Working by hand with primitive equipment, the early miners excavated vast networks of shafts and stopes often extending to great depths: at Moonta- Wallaroo Mines for example workings extended to 860 m below ground. Because of the presence of underground water, mining to these depths would not have been possible without the Cornish pumping engine. Operated by steam power these massive engines and their associated equipment were transported from Cornwall by clipper and delivered to the mines by bullock cart. At this time the engines were at the peak of their devel- opment and, although expensive to import and install, they were highly reliable: the engine oper- ating Hughes pump at Moonta worked continu- ously for sixty years without a major breakdown.

This bulletin is a detailed study of low-temperature, entrained-bed carbonization of a Texas lignite. The lignite studied was from the Sandow strip mine and is representative of the Rockdale formation of the Wilcox formational group. Carbonization was conducted in a continuous entrained-bed reactor at several temperatures in the 8801 to 1,52°C F range, and at air-coal ratios it the 0 to 10.30 scf/lb range (moisture- and ash-free basis). Carbonization rates ranged from 97.1 to 410.0 lb/hr (as-received basis), At the higher air-to-coal ratios employed, all or most of the carbonization heat was provided by internal combustion with air in the reactor. At the lower air-to-coal ratios, parts of the heat for carbonization was supplied externally. It was demonstrated that the entrained-bed carbonization of lignite is a complex reaction and that several variables, of which carbonization temperature, air-to-lignite ratio, and the average size of lignite are important, act together to influence both the carbonization yields and the properties of the resultant products, Process variables established by pant tests were used to design the industrial scale carbonizer operated at Rockdale, Texas, by the Texas Power & Light Company as agents for the Aluminum Company of America. Properties of the carbonization product obtained from the industrial scale reactor were essentially the same as those obtained from the pilot plant reactor operated under the same conditions.

A determinação de características microestruturais como base de controle de qualidade tem demonstrado cada vez mais a sua importância nos processos de aglomeração de minério de ferro. A linha de pesquisa do presente trabalho envolveu o desenvolvimento de técnicas de embutimento de pelotas seccionadas em resina condutora, de desbaste e polimento da superfície das amostras e emprego do microscópio eletrônico de varredura em conjunto com a técnica de Electron Backscattering Difraction. Por meio das técnicas empregadas de microscopia baseadas em parâmetros cristalográficos específicos, foram obtidas ilustrações forescatter e mapas de fases minerais ferríticas, silicatos e óxido de ferro que caracterizam a microestrutura de pelotas tratadas termicamente em forno piloto. O desenvolvimento desta metodologia promove subsídios para estabelecer futuramente uma relação das estruturas observadas em escala microscópica com as propriedades reconhecidas e mapeadas no produto final.

"Approximately 32 per cent of the worldÆs total gold production has come from greenstone belts (Frimmel, 2008). In these regions numerous small to large, quartz vein-associated gold deposits are hosted in metamorphic rocks ranging from lower greenschist to granulite facies. Historical exploration has focused its efforts on rocks of greenschist to lower amphibolite facies because these seem to contain the most deposits. Consequently, these regions are now reaching mature brownfield status, particularly in developed nations, and finding new deposits is becoming progressively more difficult. In comparison, regions of similar tectonic setting, but instead containing high-grade metamorphic rocks of mid-amphibolite to granulite facies, have received little attention because the first explorers found fewer deposits there.However, these regions certainly do contain some very significant gold deposits such as Hemlo in Canada (~684 t Au), Renco in Zimbabwe (~31 t Au mined since 1980), the very profitable Challenger deposit in South Australia (~36 t Au; recovered + reserve + resource), and the most recently discovered Tropicana deposit in Western Australia (~182 t Au; reserve + resource). High-grade metamorphic terrains therefore offer explorationists an excellent opportunity to move onto relatively green fields within developed nations, which carry less risk associated with development. However, explorationists have comparatively little knowledge of the geological controls on gold distribution in high-grade terranes because: industry experience lies in traditional lode-style gold deposits these gold deposits are geologically more complex there has simply been minimal research conducted on these deposits as a holistic group.Furthermore, research conducted in the last five years has shown us that the previous widely accepted model for gold genesis in these terranes, the crustal continuum model, is incorrect. Here, I discuss features from several gold deposits hosted in high-grade metamorphic rocks and use these to define two categories for explorationists to consider: deposits that formed prior to peak metamorphism (metamorphosed gold deposits) deposits that formed well after peak metamorphism (post-metamorphic gold deposits). Published optical microscopic and X- ray diffraction characteristics of the following compounds are critically evaluated and compared with Bureau of Mines data : Tricalcium aluminate , calcium monoa luminate , dodecacalcium heptaluminate , dicalcium silicate , tricalcium silicate , and sodium aluminate . A recommended set of definitive optical and X- ray diffraction characteristics is presented . These values are used to identify products of the lime soda sinter process for production of alumina . Polymorphism of gamma- , beta- , and alpha prime - dicalcium silicate is reexamined , and new data are presented on polymorphism of tricalcium silicate and sodium aluminate by high- temperature X- ray diffractometry . Polymorphism is not observed for tricalcium aluminate , calcium monoaluminate , and dodecacalcium heptaluminate . Bureau of Mines data indicating a stoichiometry of 12Ca0.7A10 for the phase 5Ca0.3A1 0₂ are discussed . A critical review of the literature concerning calcium dia luminate and sodium undecaluminate ( 8 -A10 ) is also included .

This publication covers the work of the Division of Coal Mine Inspection, Bureau of Mines, as performed under provisions of the Federal Coal Mine Safety Act. It presents background information and data since 1952 when the Act became effective and includes up-to-date statistics for the calendar year 1962. During that year, approximately 9,704 coal mines were active in the United States, and the Bureau made 12,810 regular inspections. BACKGROUND The Federal coal-mine inspection program was established to carry out the provisions in Public Law 49, 77th Congress, (H. R. 2082) approved May 7, 1941. This act has since been amended as Title I, Advisory Powers Relating to Health and Safety Conditions in Mines, under Public Law 552, 82d Congress, approved July 16, 1952, which also included Title 11, Prevention of Major Disasters in Mines. Public Law 552 is known as the Federal Coal Mine Safety Act.

El presente texto tiene como objetivo la evaluación del oro nativo y electrum encontrado en su forma libre, diseminado, encapsulado en matrices sulfurosas y sulfatadas que fue empleado en los procesos de flotación y lixiviación. Para ello, se estudiaron 54 muestras que fueron analizadas por difracción de rayos X y clasificadas en tres grupos con 18 muestras cada uno e identificadas de matrices oxidada, sulfatada y sulfurosa. Después de tamizadas fueron colocadas en briquetas de 4 mm de diámetro y analizadas por microscopía electrónica para los estudios estadísticos de los minerales portadores de oro y para los estudios de microscopía óptica.
