At a meeting of the Anthracite Investigations Advisory Committee in July 1944 at Washington, D. C., the initial work and objectives of the Anthracite Mechanical Mining Section of the Federal Bureau of Mines were discussed. It was learned that interest existed in an improved performance of mining thin, steeply pitching beds above the gangway by mechanical methods. One company offered the use of one of its mines for experimental work, and this offer was accepted. Following acceptance, an effort was made by Bureau engineers to devise a mechanical method with a performance better than that of a new hand method proposed by company engineers for an actual mining condition. The method proposed by the Bureau was to drive 30-degree slant chutes across a 10-foot bed pitching 85 degrees. These chutes were to be advanced by using a lightweight, compressed air-powered, shearing machine of German origin that had been tried in a flat Pennsylvania anthracite bed in 1934, and which did not then prove successful because of blasting difficulties. An attempt was made to obtain one of these machines from England, where it was known machines of this type had been used. Shortly thereafter John W. Buch was sent to Europe as a member of the Solid Fuels Mission to the European Theater of Operations organized by the Technical Industrial Intelligence Committee of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Through his efforts the Bureau of Mines obtained two such machines, known as the Eickhoff model DEK, one from England and one from Germany. This report covers the preliminary testing of these machines in order to obtain mechanical operating data for use in determining the power requirements for cutting anthracite with machines of this design.

The Federal Bureau of Mines and the Alabama Power Company conducted an experiment in underground gasification of coal at Gorgas, Ala. involving the use of hydraulic fracturing to increase the air acceptance of a coalbed for the introduction of combustion air and removal of product gases. Air acceptance is defined as the flow rate of air which can be injected into the coalbed at 65 p.s.i.g. This was the second time the hydraulic-fracturing technique was used at Gorgas. Sand suspended in a heavy oil served as the fracturing fluid in the first experiment; in the second the sand was two to six times larger and was suspended in a water-starch gel. In addition to providing further tests of the underground-gasification process, the purpose of the second experiment was to determine the effects of the larger sand and greater volumes of a water-base fluid on (1) the extent of the fractured area, (2) the air acceptance of the coal, and (3) the rate at which a gasification path could be carbonized (linked) through the coal, and to compare these results with those of the first experiment. The coal was fractured by injecting 11,000 lb. of sand and 33,580 gal. of water and water-gel at 200 to 600 g.p.m. and 900 to 1,000 p.s.i. The fluid fractured the coal and the sand served as a propping agent to hold the cracks and crevices open. Pressures during the fracturing operation at test boreholes indicated that the fracturing fluid extended only about 150 ft. from borehole H, the point of application of the fracture. Injection of air revealed that the air acceptance of the coalbed within this e t was materially increased. On the other hand, increased air acceptance also was noted at boreholes up to 280 ft. from borehole H and at the electrolinking area 300 to 400 ft. away, indicating that the fracture effects extended considerably farther than was evident from observation. Similar effects were noted at approximately the same distances after the first hydraulic fracture.

Canister-type gas masks have become an essential part of the equipment of many industries not only for use in emergencies, but also in performing normal operations of industrial processes and procedures, particularly where ventilation is not practically or economically feasible. They are also used widely for enhancing safety of operations which previous to the development of gas masks had been performed in harmful atmospheres. Since the inception of industrial gas masks the Bureau of Mines has been actively engaged in endeavoring to increase the efficiency and safety of these devices and this bureau has become a source of advice to manufacturers in producing devices of good quality and to industry in the proper selection and use of these devices. In order to give first-hand information and keep current with the demands and needs of industry it is necessary to perform investigations from time to time. This report deals with tests of certain types of commercial gas-mask canisters for protection against mercury vapor.

Condensates produced by SiO(g) and CO(g) have a crucial importance in silicon production. Condensation will follow the reactions 3 SiOðgÞ+COðgÞ→ 2 SiO2 + SiC and 2 SiO ðgÞ→Si+SiO2. Solid compounds generated during silicon production contain Si, SiO2 and SiC in different microstructures and amounts. In industrial systems, condensates limit the SiO(g) escape to the off-gas system. On the other hand, they can block the gas flowing from the high temperature zone, hence the necessity of studying an optimized condensation process. This review discusses SiO(g) condensation and its interaction with CO(g). The report gives an overview of the condensates found both at laboratory and at industrial scale. The two main compounds are the Si–SiO2 and the SiOx–SiC mixtures. The hypothesis on the mechanism of formation of SiC–SiOx condensates is presented through a wide selection of performed works. The advantages and disadvantages of the former experimental procedures are discussed.

Eldorado Gold Corporation of Vancouver, B.C. owns and operates three gold mines. The São Bento underground gold mine in Minas Gerais State, Brazil produced 105,907 ounces in1997. The La Colorada and La Trinidad open pit, heap leach mines in Mexico produced over 83,000ounces in 1997. With a deteriorating gold market plaguing the industry throughout 1997 Eldorado had to take critical measures at each mine to enhance gold production while lowering cash operating costs. Each mine had its own unique problems to confront. This case study will discuss three distinct courses of action taken at the three mine sites.

The petroleum industry experienced a year of satisfactory accomplishment in Oklahoma during 1945. Crude oil production was increased, a new record for recent years was established in well completions, and refinery operations were maintained at a maximum level. Daily average crude oil production increased to 382,000 bbl., reflecting a 13.5 per cent gain compared with production during the previous pear. Total wells drilled during 1945 amounted to 2556, a gain of 28.7 per cent over 1944 Refinery throughout averaged 187,500 bbl. daily, an increase of approximately 4 percent over the preceding year.

The flotation separation of apatite and calcium-bearing gangue minerals (dolomite and calcite) has always been a problem in phosphate ore mineral processing research. The crystal structure and surface properties of minerals have an important influence on their floatability. In this paper, the theoretical and comparative analysis of the crystal structure and surface electronic properties of apatite, dolomite and calcite were carried out using the first principle calculation based on density functional theory. As a supplement and validation, the surface wettability of three minerals under different flotation conditions were compared and analysed by contact angle test. The results theoretically revealed that the three calcium-bearing mineral surfaces have similar surface electronic properties and thus exhibit similar floatability. In the flotation process, the anion difference between apatite and carbonate gangue should be fully utilised, and the minerals can be separated only after surface modification by flotation reagent. The contact angle test shows that phosphate and carbonate can be separated by using anion flotation collector after surface modification with acid. It is expected that this research is of interest for understanding the surface structure and electronic properties of apatite and carbonate gangue minerals and providing the theoretical basis for surface interaction. Os aços austeníticos 304L quando processados tem suas propriedades mecânicas afetadas pelas transformações martensíticas induzidas pela deformação plástica (efeito TRIP). O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar esse comportamento em corpos de prova que sofreram deformações gradativas por meio de ensaios de tração uniaxial a partir de diferentes técnicas de análises microestruturais e mecânicas, a saber: ferritoscopia, difração de raios-x e ultramicrodureza. Os resultados obtidos foram satisfatórios e permitiram estimar o efeito da deformação na transformação martensítica e comparar as técnicas utilizadas.

Other than being reasonably certain of the average vertical stress being lithostatic, there can be little certainty about stress in the ground. The stresses and strains in rock are a function of gravitational effects, external load, thermal changes, diagenesis and their mechanical properties including elastic, creep and post failure behaviours. It is highly desirable to measure stress where mining is going to take place, even if the virgin stress condition has already been changed by mining. The concept of some far field stress value that is more or less constant is usually invalid and can be dangerous to use in mine design. Measuring stress is not simple. The basic processes are broken into two categories, one where the rock will not fail around the borehole in which the stress is being measured and one where the rock has failed or will fail. Because of the complexity and cost in obtaining a single, precise stress measurement it is highly desirable to have some system to be able to obtain an idea of the uniformity, or otherwise of the stress situation between precise measurements. Table 1 shows the methods for measuring stress. The first five methods work on the basis of some fairly direct measurement of mechanical rock behaviour while the last three are attempts to get some idea of stress out of core long after it is removed from the host rock. While these latter methods appear to tick all the boxes for applicability there is a great deal of uncertainty in the results that they deliver. This paper reviews the methods for measuring stress and presents two new methods. These are a three dimensional overcore system to provide precise stress measurements in rocks that will not fail around the borehole and a core ovality system. The latter can be used to provide information on the stress difference orthogonal to the core. It is particularly useful because it can be used every metre of core length.

The development of a new means of measuring the relative abrasivity of a slurry came about by necessity in 1967 during a full scale loop test of a 560 H.P. reciprocating pump handling magnetite slurry. In order to evaluate the life of expendable fluid end parts, the question of the amount of attrition in a re-circulated slurry had to be considered. An expected reduction in abrasivity as a result of this attrition would certainly give erroneous data on a parts life test. There- fore, some means of measuring such change in abrasivity became imperative. Several test methods were investigated1 but it was felt that these did not fully represent the wear due to back and forth rubbing action associated with a reciprocating pump. A "rubbing block" device used some years ago to determine the quality of hard facing materials was recalled, along with its shortcomings, in that an attempt was made to suspend a small percentage of abrasive particles in a colloidal viscous "mud". Erratic results were attributed to the fact that it was difficult to maintain a consistent slurry concentration under the metal wear block and the reciprocating speed was not great enough to maintain good agitation.

Traditional loading systems have relied for many years on wheel and track loaders, power shovels, conveyor belts, and more recently, hydraulic front shovels. Each has certain advantages and disadvantages, depending largely on job conditions. Hydraulic backhoes were introduced several years ago as still another truck loading option. At first, buckets were small and backhoe use was limited to small earthmoving projects. Now, as backhoes are equipped with shorter sticks and bigger buckets to move larger quantities of earth. The "mass excavation" concept offers an excellent truck loading option in many situations. System Development and Advantages Mass excavation was first used successfully by contractors in site development and highway construction, loading both on-highway and off-highway trucks. Operators were able to take advantage of the excavator's ability to work in poor underfoot conditions and dig in tough materials. The technique was first applied to mining in the kaolin mines of central Georgia. Kaolin, one of the world's most abundant minerals, is used to make paper, paint, ceramics, rubber, plastics, and many other products. Since kaolin clay is slippery when wet, load-out with wheel loaders is very inefficient. Also, kaolin is found in very spotty deposits due to the weathering process involved in its formation. Consequently, draglines are also impractical for kaolin mining since they don't have the mobility to move between clay deposits. In response to these mining conditions and kaolin characteristics, mines began using excavators in mass excavation as early as 1976. They have developed a system that takes advantage of the excavator's •high penetration and breakout force in tight materials; •fast-cycling hydraulics; •ability to work in poor underfoot conditions; and •mobility in comparison to draglines. This loading method has been successful in Georgia's kaolin mines and now can be applied to other mining operations as well. The following is a Maintainability Design Checklist for coal mining equipment. The purpose of the checklist is to provide a summary of design review points for the maintainability assessment of new or existing underground equipment. It specifically focuses on the identification of equipment design features, tasks, or procedures that impact equipment downtime, repair costs, labor hours and maintainer skill level requirements. Some checklist points are general in nature. The checklist was designed to be used across all categories of underground equipment. The intent is to draw attention to design features and maintenance procedures that will increase maintainability requirements. You are encouraged to adapt this checklist to site specific or machine specific requirements by: Inserting specific performance criteria for various categories of maintenance tasks. For example; all hydraulic lines on a shuttle car should be replaceable in 15 minutes or 25 minutes, etc. Adding or deleting checklist items for different categories of equipment. You would include environmental control equipment, for example, on face equipment and not on shuttle cars or man trips. Adding additional checklist items based on site or equipment specific maintenance histories or experience, company maintenance standards, or other factors.

The occurrence of borates and zeolites at Mesa del Alamo is well documented by McAnulty and Hoffer (1) and Lefond and Barker (2). Further investigation indicates the presence of priceite and meyerhofferite in addition to the howlite (1) and colemanite (2). Analcime occurs in addition to the clinoptilolite and phillipsite (2). The Mesa del Alamo area is about 200 !a south of Tucson, Arizona, and 13 km southeast of Magdalena, Sonora, Mexico, just south of the unpaved road to Cucurpe (Figure 1). The geology and mineralogy of northcentral Sonora is known only on a regional basis except for small areas mapped in detail during copper exploration. The study area is within the Basin and Range province of North America from which borates and zeolites are now produced in California. The borates and zeolites at Mesa del Alamo occur in geological environments similar to those of the Mojave and Death Valley regions of California (3, 4). Thus, a detailed exploration pro- gram in the Magdalena area could result in the discovery of economic borate and/or zeolite deposits.

O presente estudo fez uso de uma liga de NiTi, rica em Ni, elaborada em um forno de fusão por indução a vácuo - VIM e posteriormente refundida em fornos de arco elétrico com eletrodo não consumível de tungstênio – VAR. Com base nos resultados de Calorimetria Diferencial de Varredura (DSC), Difração de Raios-X (DRX) e Microscopia Eletrônica de Varredura (MEV) / Espectroscopia de Energia Dispersiva de Raios-X (EDS), foi possível observar a heterogeneidade composicional/ típica de fundido por processo convencionais, as inclusões de TiC e Ti4Ni2O provenientes da fusão no forno VIM, e o refinamento microestrutural e manutenção da sua composição original com uso de cadinho de cobre e câmara/atmosfera dos fornos VAR.

Strip mining in Western Canada, though of considerable importance, is a fairly recent development for many of the operators in the district. Adding to the difficulty of unfamiliarity is the fact that a great deal of the stripping is done on pitching seams, for which the engineering and economic principles of setting the most advantageous strip ratio are not readily apparent. The novelty of the operation combined with the complexity of the principles involved can easily lead to misconceptions as to the determination of the economic ratio. Definition of Strip Ration There are two commonly accepted meanings of the term strip ratio: (1) The ratio of feet of overburden to be stripped per foot of coal recoverable. (2) The ratio of cubic yards of overburden per cubic yard or ton of coal. The first definition is inapplicable to pitching seams so, throughout this paper, strip ratio will be taken as the ratio of cubic yards of overburden to be removed per cubic yard of coal recoverable. Economic Ratio In the case of flat seams, the strip ratio is fixed by existing natural conditions, and the magnitude of this ratio determines whether stripping is economically feasible. With pitching seams, however, the strip ratio is a variable. On the outcrop, there is usually some coal which can be obtained with little or no stripping. As the work is carried down the pitch of the coal seam, the proportion of overburden continually increases until a point is reached where it is no longer economical to continue the operation. The question immediately arises as to the location of this point, and this resolves into the problem of determining the most favourable strip ratio, or, to use the accepted term, the economic ratio.

Published experimental coke data from a pilot plant slot-type oven were examined by statistical regression analysis. Quantitative relationships were found to exist between the coking rate, bulk density, and fine grinding of the coal, sole-oven expansion, volatile matter, moisture, ash, and carbon con-tent of the coal and coke parameters indicative of size and strength. Regression equations developed from coke data were shown to yield computed values that were in good agreement with experimental results for 11 coke properties. Prediction equations developed were evaluated with an independent set of data. Present results indicate that the variables cited undergo much interaction and the sum of these interactions determines coke size and strength.

This paper outlines the results of a study of opinions of practicing engineers concerning the value of environmental engineering courses in a mining engineering curriculum. One hundred engineers with significant experience in mining-related engineering work were carefully chosen. Of the sixty-seven responses received, about half were from mining engineers and half from environmental engineers. The results of the survey are outlined in detail. The number and type of courses recommended by the respondents are summarized as well as the specific topics recommended for inclusion in a mining engineering curriculum. The survey form also asked for the stages in the mine life when environmental experts were needed and the percentage of environmental engineering performed by outside experts for many mining-related environmental tasks. The results of this line of questions are provided. Finally, the paper offers a comparison of the results for environmental engineers and mining engineers and analyzes the differences.

The development and distribution of gold placers in Otago û Southland is related primarily to the evolution and architecture of three distinctly different drainage networks that developed during and since Gondwana breakup: +        Late-Gondwana û Pre-marine; +        Middle Tertiary Post-marine; and +        Modern. Late Gondwana û Pre-marine drainage was dominantly recti-linear and controlled by normal faults and sedimentary basins formed before or during Gondwana breakup. Placers formed dominantly in 2nd order transverse drainages with primary sources in their catchments. This drainage network was progressively destroyed by inundation and burial by marine strata during Late Cretaceous û Middle Tertiary marine transgression that ultimately covered most of New Zealand. Middle Tertiary Post-marine drainage evolved on and incised the newly emergent low-relief landscape during regional marine regression driven by development of the present plate boundary through South Island. Most of Central Otago was drained into Southland and to the southern coast via a large braided river system with an extensive network of tributaries in its Central Otago reach. East Otago was drained by several smaller systems. Placers formed dominantly in proximal and medial reaches of 1st and 2nd order drainages with primary or pre-existing placers in their catchments. This drainage network was destroyed by inundation and burial of the Central Otago reach of the major system by lacustrine strata following tectonic damning of its middle reach by range uplift and development of a lake complex that covered >5000km2 of Central Otago. The Modern drainage network evolved from the Middle Tertiary network through complex response, firstly to uplift of NW-trending and NE-trending ranges throughout the region since the Late Miocene, and secondly to the effects of major Pleistocene glacial advances in West Otago. Placers formed in alluvial fans at range margins, proximal and medial pre-glacial fluvial systems and glacial outwash sequences. Evolution of each of these drainage networks has been accompanied by widespread sedimentary recycling of alluvial gold from older to younger placers, augmented locally by input of first-cycle gold derived from erosion of primary sources in the repeatedly exhumed basement rocks.

Gekko Systems has developed an underground pre-concentration plant (Python) to reduce mine operating costs. Many ores liberate favourably using either high pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) or vertical shaft impactors (VSI). Using these comminution circuits for mineral liberation; rather than for the final recovery process and by utilising a high mass pull, high recovery process route (gravity/flotation), a narrow, low head, compact processing plant was developed that can sensibly be operated underground. The Python underground processing plant can provide a number of advantages for narrow vein mines including lower haulage costs, improved mine call factor and lower operating costs. The focus on fine crushing reduces the power requirement of the plant to approximately 8 kWh/tonne. The Python underground processing plant has been designed to be towed down the decline or lowered down a shaft, and is capable of being installed in sloping, non-linear drives for placement close to the working face. The overall benefit to mining companies of this concept has been estimated to be a saving in mining costs and a significantly smaller environmental footprint.

Electric-furnace smelting for simultaneous recovery of zinc spelter and lead bullion from complex lead-zinc sinter was investigated. Reduction of lead and zinc was satisfactory. Condensation of lead and zinc vapor to pyrophoric metal powder in a water-cooled, shock-condensing system produced excellent recoveries. Metal-splash condensation to produce zinc spelter was unsatisfactory. Special smelting experiments differentiated the effects of several smelting parameters on zinc metal recovery. The principal cause for unsatisfactory zinc metal recovery was transfer of iron to the condenser and subsequent degradation of zinc in a mixture composed of lead and an iron-zinc intermetallic compound. Limitations of the process were determined. Slag-resistance open-bath electric smelting of complex lead-zinc sinter is not considered feasible.
