The recent non-equilibrium electro-phoretic mobility measurements by laser-Doppler electrophoresis coupled with the stability and prevalence of collector colloids in soluble salt flotation systems suggest that the selective flotation of alkali halides is due to the adsorption of oppositely charged collector colloids by hetero-coagulation. Previously reported flotation results confirm this surface charge/collector colloid adsorption model. However, the nature of the inter-particle forces responsible for hetero-coagulation of such oppositely charged particles at high ionic strengths remains to be determined. In this regard, atomic force microscopy was used for inter-particle force measurements at high ionic strengths. Model systems such as polystyrene/quartz and silica/sapphire were studied to measure the particle interaction forces prevalent at high ionic strengths. Results from this study indicate that while repulsive hydration forces exist between similarly charged hydrophilic particles, attractive forces exist between oppositely charged hydrophilic particles in high ionic strength solutions. The repulsive forces between similarly charged hydrophilic surfaces at high ionic strengths (2-4 M) are described by a double exponential function with decay lengths of 0.17 and 1.4 nm depending upon the surfaces involved. On the other hand, attractive forces were observed between oppositely charged hydrophilic surfaces at high ionic strengths (2-4M) and were described by a single exponential function with decay lengths of up to 9 nm depending upon the surfaces involved.

"The Ohio River Bridge East End Crossing Tunnel requires a 75-year service life of its cast-in-place reinforced concrete lining. This twin-tube 3-lane (each tube) highway tunnel is about 55-ft wide and 30-ft high. Since unified tunnel service life prediction methodology does not exist in the US, challenges occurred during the design-build phase of this project. These challenges include the methodologies in determining the reinforced concrete’s degradation mode, the lining’s surface chloride concentration level, the reinforcing steel’s critical chloride threshold value for corrosion, how to verify the concrete’s diffusion coefficient, and the durability impact from concrete crack width. This paper presents a methodology in verifying the proposed concrete mix can achieve the service life requirements. This methodology can be adopted for service life prediction for future tunnels to be built in the US. INTRODUCTION The Ohio River Bridge East End Crossing (ORBEE) Tunnel is part of a Public Private Partnership project, which connects transportation network between Louisville, Kentucky and southern Indiana. Located in Louisville, Kentucky, the twin-tube highway tunnel provides northbound and southbound lanes of the Kentucky approach to a new bridge across the Ohio River. Tunnel lengths are approximately 1,675-ft and 1,685 for the northbound tube and the southbound tube, respectively. Connected by two cross-passages, both tubes have a roadway width of 40-ft, for 3-lane traffic, and a vertical clearance of 26.5-ft.The tunnel was constructed by drill and blast method with shotcrete and rock dowels as initial ground supports. The final tunnel lining system includes: •,Nominal 16” cast-in-place reinforced concrete lining, with 2” and 3” concrete covers over reinforcing steel for its extrados and intrados, respectively. •,20” cast-in-place reinforced concrete invert slab, with 4” and 3” concrete covers over reinforcing steel on its top face and bottom face, respectively. •,PVC waterproofing system around tunnel perimeter, excluding invert slab. •,Perforated PVC groundwater collection pipes on both sides of the tubes and one below the invert slab of each tube."

En quoi consistent les études de suivi des effets sur l?environnement (ESEE)? Les ESEE constituent une méthode de suivi scientifique que l?on peut employer pour déterminer la santé des écosystèmes aquatiques (qui peuvent être touchés par l?activité humaine) et l?efficacité des mesures de protection de l?environnement. Les ESEE sont des évaluations scientifiques itératives du poisson, de l?habitat du poisson et des ressources halieutiques. Le programme comporte des phases séquentielles de deux à six ans de suivi, d?interprétation et de compte rendu au cours desquelles la fréquence et le type de suivi dépendent des résultats des études précédentes. Le programme des ESEE pour les mines de métaux est fondé sur un accord conclu à l?unanimité entre les intervenants. Les exigences du programme et les guides techniques connexes ont été élaborés à la suite d?une consultation multilatérale à laquelle ont participé les représentants du secteur privé, du gouvernement et des collectivités. Toutes les mines assujetties au Règlement sur les effluents des mines de métaux (REMM), aux termes de la Loi sur les pê ches, doivent procéder à une ESEE dans le cadre de l?autorisation qu?ils ont reç ue de rejeter des effluents. "8.1. IntroductionThe stoichiometry of most named platinum-group minerals (POM) is known (cf. Cabri, 1981b, in Chapter 7), but, because these minerals are subject to a wide range of element substitutions, representative analyses require treatment in a separate chapter (section 8.2). The analyses, in all cases done by electron microprobe, are grouped in sections according to the principal platinum-group element (POE) for each POM, and then follow sequentially with increasing amounts of the principal POE starting with the ideal composition, when known. In order to facilitate reference to specific POM by name, an alphabetical listing is also given (Table 8.1). A range of compositions, in addition to one or several ""representative"" analyses, is given for some POM when more than one analysis has been reported for a particular locality. The tables of POM analyses (Tables 8.2 to 8. 76) include at least one analysis for every locality for which data have been published, to the best of the authors' knowledge. All analyses are referenced for locality and publication source, and include several unpublished analyses (all but one done at CANMET). Most analyses have been rounded off to one decimal place for amounts more than one per cent and their formulae calculated on the basis of an even number of total atoms. In all tables, ''n.d.'' stands for elements sought for but not detected and a dash signifies elements not sought, or when these haven't been specificed in the publication source.Section 8.3 contains tabulated analyses and, in some cases, also includes a critical assessment of POE-bearing minerals in which the POE occur in trace or minor quantities. The organization of the data in this section is by mineral groups; e.g., sulphides, sulpharsenides, silicates, etc. Some of these data are also discussed in Chapter 4 by Crocket (1981) and are discussed briefly in Chapter 6 by Crocket and Cabri (1981)."

The use of the Bond Work Index to size industrial grinding equipment is well known. Its use to measure grinding efficiency was presented by C.A. Rowland, Jr. at an AIME meeting in 1976. However, due to a bureaucratic error, the paper was never submitted for publication. This metric has nevertheless been adopted by industry as a widely used standard. The purpose of this paper is to re-present and update the application of this tool as a standard for measuring grinding circuit efficiency. Definition ?standard, n. something established for use as a rule or basis of comparison in measuring or judging capacity, content, extent, value, quality, etc.; as standards of weight and measure? (Webster, 1958).

ALTHOUGH the iron-carbon diagram has undergone many changes in the last 20 years, the region below the eutectoid line and up to approxi-mately 1.7 per cent carbon has been little affected. This region is generally considered to consist of cementite and ferrite. Graphite has been noted occasionally in the hypereutectoid steel region, and the ready formation of graphite nodules in malleable cast iron is a phenomenon difficult to interpret in the light of cementite, supposedly stable at sub-eutectoid temperatures. In this case the graphite formation has been partly explained by the presence of silicon, and many have believed that silicon acts to change the stable state rather than to accelerate reactions so as to arrive at the stable state in a briefer period of time. Consider-ation of this phenomenon indicates that cementite is not the stable phase in the temperature composition zone referred to. In the course of examining a low-carbon steel tube taken from a petroleum cracking still, which had been in service for approximately three years at temperatures somewhat below the eutectoid temperature, observations were made that shed light on this entire subject. The tube in question analyzed:1 C, 0.15 per cent; Mn, 0.49; Si, 0.02; S, 0.023; P, 0.015. The microstructure of the tube after service is shown in Figs. 1 and 2. From these it is evident that cementite as such is absent, and that in its place nodular graphite has been formed. In order to check this observation further, samples taken from the tube were heated at 850° C. for varying periods of time. On July 2nd, 2007, LCPC and LOADTEST performed a static loading test with an Osterberg-cell on a bored pile of 1600 mm diameter. The 56.50 meters deep test pile constructed by Trevi Spa for Soares da Costa group, was near the Cacheu river in Guinea Bissau. This test was conducted to validate the design of the foundations of the Sao Vicente bridge; a project undertaken by the Ministry of Public Works of the Republic of Guinea Bissau and funded by the European Development Fund. Sub-surface conditions at the test pile location consist primarily of layers of weak sands and clays. The piles were loaded statically using the O-cell® bi-directional method 25 days after concreting. The maximum sustained bi-directional load applied to the pile was 11.7 MN. At the maximum load, the displacements above and below the O-cell assembly were 6.6 mm and 81.9 mm, respectively. The resulting pile head behavior has been calculated for a combined skin friction and end-bearing load of 29.3 MN. The piles were also instrumented using LCPC removable extensometers, which made it possible to measure the mobilization of shaft friction and toe resistance. The adjusted test data indicated that this pile would settle approximately 12.2 mm for the service load of 12MN applied at the head of the pile. This paper provides a very brief presentation of the bridge project and the test pile instrumentation: LCPC removable extensometers and O-cell® instrumentation. The results are detailed and analyzed herein and the combined use of these two instrumentation systems is a world première.

A 5-hole pattern was drilled from the surface at a site near Oak Grove, Jefferson County, Ala., to degasify the gassy Mary Lee coal bed in advance of mining. Gas and water production was monitored for 1 year, 4 months to allow gas flow to stabilize fully. A thickened water stimulation treatment was designed and applied in one hole of the pattern to evaluate this degasification technique for the Mary Lee coalbed. A gas production rate of 70,000 fts/day after stimulation treatment indicates that the use of vertical boreholes coupled with hydraulic fracturing in advance of mining the Mary Lee coalbed would provide for more rapid degasification and could provide a possible source of natural gas.

Accurate estimation of rock load and selection of types of ground reinforcement to match post-failure behaviour of rock mass are important issues to assure tunnel stability. This paper focuses on the main factors affecting rock load to evaluate the capabilities of the existing models for prediction of rock load. Rock mass properties, project features and excavation method, as well as ground conditions and stress condition were found to be the key factors affecting the magnitude of rock load. Field data from tunnels of about 37.5?km driven in several geological structures in non-squeezing ground was used in this study. An in depth statistical analysis was performed on data to find correlations between the input parameters and measured/observed rock load. A weighting system was proposed to obtain the proper contribution of each factor for estimation of rock load in tunnelling through various ground conditions. The new classification system offered predicted values for rock load that were in a good agreement with the actual field measurements. The high disturbance factor (D>0.4) was the prime factor which controlled the rock load. Rock mass quality was the second key factor influencing rock load, which could be estimated by GSI, GSIresidual , especially when combined with tunnel depth.CITATION:Afshar, T, Sharifzadeh, M and Rostami, J, 2014. "The Bushveld Complex is a large layered igneous intrusion, located in the northern parts of the Republic of South Africa. The complex hosts the largest known reserves of Platinum Group Metals in the world. On the western limb of the complex, mining of the Merensky economic horizon and UG2 chromitite layer has been conducted for many years by several mining companies, including Impala Platinum Limited. Over the past decade, Impala has planned a new generation of greenfield vertical shafts, commencing with comprehensive geological and geotechnical studies. As part of the geotechnical studies, numerous tests have been conducted to quantify the mechanical properties of the various near-reef rock types. These tests include point load tests conducted in the field, as well as uni-axial compressive strength, triaxial compressive strength, and Brazilian disc tensile strength tests conducted in specialist laboratories. The authors have compiled an extensive database containing a large number of tests for different rock types, ranging from felsic Anorthosite to mafic Pegmatoid. The database was analysed to quantify the mechanical properties and values for Mohr Coulomb and Hoek Brown failure criteria for each rock type typically exposed by mining. The paper will provide a data set of rock mechanical properties typically used in numerical modelling and other design processes. Using the significant number of tests available, data describing the variability of the various parameters will be included."

A field study was made by the Bureau of Mines in cooperation with oil companies to determine the feasibility of changing the injection profile of water-input wells after water breakthrough at producing oil wells. A secondary objective was to study the particle size and quantity of plugging material required to change the input profile and the methods of applying these materials. Fifty-three injection wells were treated with various amounts and types of plugging materials and the injection profile was definitely changed in most of the wells treated. Increased efficiency of water injection after treatment was indicated by tracer surveys and injection-well performance. There were some indications that the rate of water production was reduced and the rate of oil production was increased as a result of selective-plugging treatments, but ,s found that an immediate change in the rate of oil and water production did not normally occur. In many cases, beneficial results from a treatment may never be observed in the rate of oil or water production due to the many factors that affect the performance of producing and injection wells.

The Bureau of Mines made laboratory absorption measurements on oil shale samples, which showed that the amount of methane absorbed is proportional to pressure and oil yield, and can be much larger than would be predicted based solely on porosity. Oil shale cores collected in the field were also measured for their gas content using the Bureau of Mines direct method. Cores taken from deep locations and far from outcrops yielded more gas than cores from shallower locations or at outcrops, when taking into account variations in oil yield, and all data indicate that oil shale mines that are both deep and far from an out-crop will emit low levels of methane gas.

Luscar Stereo commenced construction of the mine at Coal Valley, Alberta, in August, 1976. It is designed to produce approximately 2.5 million clean short tons of steam coal annually - 2.0 million tons per year being committed to Ontario Hydro and 0.5 million tons per year being committed to Neptune Terminals for sale on the export market. The project involves constructing a heavy-media coal preparation plant, erecting a 42-cubic-yard dragline, constructing a shop/office complex, and developing three surface mining zones and associated facilities. As there were no existing facilities in the Coal Valley area, it was necessary to establish access roads, an airstrip, temporary utilities, fuel supplies, a construction camp, rail upgrading and communication services.

Faults, sandstone channels, and abandoned mine workings present severe safety hazards, disrupt mining, and necessitate costly precautions or discontinuance of operations. In addition to fault detection, mining companies have a need to map discontinuities such as seam thinning and previously mined areas in both longwall and room-and-pillar operations. Initial field tests demonstrated successful generation and propagation of higher order guided wave modes. Theoretical studies indicate potential for improved resolution by sensing small details in the coal seam and roof structure. Controlled-waveform source transducers and specialized detectors are particularly useful to preferentially excite and detect the Love (SH) and Rayleigh-type (P-SV) waves, including the higher frequency modes. The distinct observation of reflections using the transducers in the shear wave mode makes feasible the detection of the water-filled voids.

The rapid depletion of known deposits of high-grade ore and the need for development of additional reserves, together with increased interest in open-pit mining of low-grade zinc-lead ores in the Tri-State District, led the Bureau of Mines to examine likely mining sites. Underground operations failed to remove all of the ore in a number of areas, and it appeared possible that some of them might be reworked successfully by low-cost open-pit methods. The South Carthage or Hull tract in Jasper County, Mo., was selected by Bureau engineers as favorable for the development of an open-pit mine.

Ilmenite concentrate and methane are fed to a non-transferred arc thermal plasma reactor to produce a powder that is primarily TiC and Fe. This material has promising characteristics for powder metallurgy applications. Free energy minimization plots were used to predict the feasibility of the reaction. An estimate of the optimum molar ratio between the ilmenite concentrate and methane was made based on the mineral composition. Argon-helium mixtures were used as plasma gases. The effects of power input level, carrier gas flow rate, powder feeding rate, and methane-ilmenite molar ratio were studied and the behavior of the system characterized. Two different powder injection angles were tried. A mathematical model to describe the temperature profiles in the reactor was formulated and solved. The product has been characterized by x-ray diffraction and atomic absorption. A conversion of 97 % of Ti to TiC was achieved. It was found that minor amounts of titanium oxides, iron carbide and free carbon are also present. TEM and SEM were used to study the morphology.

New York City is an urban environment with a history spanning over 200 years. The coastline of New York has changed over the years. In the East River, old bulkhead and remnant of relieving platforms together with variable bedrock elevations pose challenges in the design and construction of deep foundations. This paper presents a Case History of high capacity deep foundations along the Franklin D. Roosevelt (FDR) Drive on the Upper East Side in New York City. The project consists of a ramp that overpasses the FDR Drive allowing heavy trucks to access the Marine Transfer Station (MTS) facility built over the East River. Large diameter drilled shafts and mini-piles socketed to bedrock were designed and constructed. Remnant of old bulkhead was encountered at the site and a Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) investigation was completed during the subsurface investigation phase of the design. This paper discusses details of the subsurface investigation program and design methodology of the high capacity drilled shafts and mini-piles. It also describes construction methods and results of Osterberg Load tests documenting the field values of skin friction through the rock socket. Other construction challenges include construction and drilling rock sockets for drilled shafts over sloping bedrock. 1. INTRODUCTION New York City is a renowned urban city that always calls for the most delicate, yet complex, and robust superstructures and most importantly substructure designs. The historic preservation of this large 200 years old city of 319 square miles is ever changing. Shorelines are often extended to accommodate new infrastructure and very often many miscellaneous structures are discovered below the ground surface. The East 91st Street Ramp was constructed to provide access to the East 91st Street Marine Transfer Station over FDR Drive and York Avenue. Another alternative ramp will be relocated to the South Bound (SD) of the FDR Drive at 92nd Street. A subsurface exploration program was completed in accordance with the New York City Department of Design and Construction (NYCDDC) general requirements, Section 4.5, to perform subsurface investigation along the FDR Drive in Manhattan, New York.

The coking coal or clean coal from raw material division, Tata Steel Ltd. is a prime source of energy for inhouse steel making. Coal reserves of semi soft coking coal at West Bokaro is beneficiated by dense media cyclone and froth flotation processes to produce clean coal. In dense media cyclone process two byproducts-middling and rejects are also produced along with clean coal. With the growing demand for clean coal, it becomes imperative to maximize the recovery of clean coal in beneficiation processes. This will help, not only in reduction in cost of production, but also in raw resource conservation, and proper utilization. In this context, a case study was conducted at West Bokaro to identify opportunities for clean coal recovery from by-products. This paper mainly discusses the process for recovery of clean coal from byproducts and study of further liberation of clean coal from byproducts for economic consideration.

The criteria used to design, operate and control flotation columns are significantly different from those used for conventional flotation machines. Therefore, a computer-aided design (CAD) package for column flotation has been developed. The simulator has been set up using guidelines developed at Virginia Tech and information published in literature during the past few years. The simulator is useful for determining the proper design and appropriate operating conditions for a column cell to fit a specific set of conditions. In addition, the simulator can be used for training in column operation and for trouble-shooting operational problems. Simulation results have been found to be in good agreement with experimental data obtained using laboratory columns.
