The Red Dog zinc-lead-silver deposit is located in the DeLong Mountains of the western Brooks Range in northwest Alaska. The region is located 145 km(90 miles) north of the village of Kotzebue (Fig. 1).Red Dog’s current resource base is 143 Mt (157 million st) averaging 16.1% zinc, 4.3% lead and 83g/t (2.4 oz/st) silver. It is contained in four structurally separate deposits— the Hilltop, Main Deposit, Aqqaluk and the newly discovered Paalaaq deposit. Recent exploration for the Aqqaluk and the Paalaaq deposits has contributed to Cominco American’s understanding of the detailed structural geology of the district and its role in the placement of individual ore bodies.

Ongoing mining of the East Ertsberg Skarn System orebody below the Gunung Bijih Timur and Intermediate Ore Zone caves has been relatively successful and a ramp up to 80 000 t/d was achieved in the Deep Ore Zone Mine. However, the distribution of production, the overall drawpoint availability as well as the rate of change of the cave back profile has not followed the anticipated path. Several key factors influencing cave growth and progress, grade variation, fragmentation, wet muck and surface subsidence have been recognised over the life-of-mine that now have to be taken into account for planning the later stages of mining.The paper will discuss the influence of geological controls of lithology and structure – how this as well as other contributing aspects have impacted ore flow, contributing to some of the widespread panel damage, and been a key factor in compacted draw columns and caused an accelerated appearance of water ingress. This in turn has rapidly changed the distribution of wet drawpoints requiring remote mucking and special controls that also affect the call from the remaining dry drawpoints. Comment is also made on the potential final cave profile if it continues along the current trend and some discussion is offered about possible mitigation measures if this were to come about.CITATION:Wilson, A D, Purba, A M and Sjadat, A, 2016. Exposure to respirable crystalline silica (RCS) remains a serious health hazard to the US mining workforce who are potentially exposed as various ore bodies are drilled, blasted, hauled by truck, crushed, screened, and transported to their destinations. The current Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) permissible exposure limit (PEL) for RCS remains at approximately 100 μg/m3 , but it is noteworthy that the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has lowered its PEL to 50 μg/ m3 (with enforcement dates staggered through 2022 for various sectors), and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has held a 50 μg/m3 recommended standard since 1976. To examine a method for reducing RCS exposure using a NIOSH-developed video exposure monitoring (VEM) technology (referred to as Helmet-CAM), video and respirable dust concentration data were collected on eighty miners across seven unique mining sites. The data was then collated and partitioned using a thresholding scheme to determine exposures that were in excess of ten times the mean exposure for that worker. Focusing on these short duration, high magnitude exposures can provide insight to implement controls and interventions that can dramatically lower the employee’s overall average exposure. In 19 of the 80 cases analyzed, it was found that exposure could be significantly lowered by 20% or more by reducing exposures that occur during just 10 min of work per 8-hour shift. This approach provides a method to quickly analyze and determine which activities are creating the greatest health concerns. In most cases, once identified, focused control technologies or behavioral modifications can be applied to those tasks.

The paper is a general review of practice in design of sub-level open stopes in Northern Rhodesian copper mines and gives examples of some interesting developments during the last five or six years. It discusses the effect of hangingwall subsidence and the methods used to combat rock pressure on working areas.INTRODUCTIONAll producing mines on the Northern Rhodesian Copperbelt have large ore reserves and are designed for high rates of production. The three mines (Mufulira, Rhokana Corporation, and Roan Antelope) where sub-level open stoping is used, hoist from 250,000 to over 400,000 short tons of ore a month so that any stoping method used must be adaptable to concentrated' mining. Alternative methods of analyzing data acquired by the Morenci copper concentrator process control instrument-computer system are presented. Experimental measures of ore characteristics, for proposed feed forward control, are introduced. These include on-line indexes of ore hardness, ore density, ore dusting, and ore color. Comparison of metallurgical results before and after computerized process control implementation, allowing for differing ore grades, oxidation, hardness, and fineness of grind, also is described.

The relative significance of corrosive and erosive wear in magnetic taconite grinding is examined. The influence of different types of aeration (nitrogen, air, and oxygen) on ball wear was established for mild steel and high carbon low alloy steel balls. Ball wear data from dry and wet grinding tests are compared with those obtained in the presence of an organic solvent that does not promote electrochemical corrosion. Marked ball grinding tests and electrochemical measurements involving ball material and magnetite electrodes indicate that contribution from oxygen toward wear (corrosive wear) is relatively small, and abrasive wear appears to be significant. Rheological properties of the slurry appear to have an important bearing on the abrasive wear of grinding balls.

Post-tertiary training programmes have been designed and produced for geologists at different levels of understanding and expertise in the relationship between gold mineralization and shear zones. A workshop format was used as it allowed both clients and facilitators to participate in the learning process. Evaluation by facilitators and participants refined the workshop programme as an effective skills oriented learning process. The general observation is that post-tertiary training in small, interactive, practical, learning oriented groups is far better than lecture oriented short courses for developing skills based learning. The evaluation indicates that the process in post-tertiary training must include aspects which are both useful and used.

McLanahan RSS14x50 scrubber screens have individually processed over 50 Mt of Pilbara iron ore. The first stage of separation in these plants with abrasive, high specific gravity, large lumps is an extremely arduous duty with high wear rates. With the Scrubber Screen layout this occurs in the attached trommel section. The initial supply of the replaceable trommel panels were of steel-backed rubber with a service life of approx. six weeks. Site Personnel established a goal of 26 week wear life in conjunction with 100 per cent reliability and while field trials were undertaken using a variety of hardened and cast steels that demonstrated wear life to the nominated requirement some unpredicted failures still occurred. With a long evaluation time and challenges to create repeatable conditions with field testing, a purpose built test unit was designed and constructed to allow controlled evaluation of a number of materials and designs. During 2016 tests were conducted with eight different materials, of varying thickness to simulate impact conditions and a number of aperture profiles to evaluate both impact and abrasion effects. From these results two designs were selected for full scale implementation to confirm the nominated goals. Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of MSc (Eng) degree Solid state sintered silicon carbide ceramics are used in aggressive environments as sealings. There exist data concerning corrosion, but there are only few data concerning their electrocorrosion behaviour. Therefore the electrochemical corrosion of solid state sintered silicon carbide (SSiC) ceramics has been studied at room temperature in acidic and alkaline environments by using potentiodynamic polarization measurements. The investigation showed a pronounced electrochemical corrosion in bases and acids. In HCl andHNO3pseudo-passivity features due to the formation of a thin layer of SiO2on the surface were observed, whereas in NaOH soluble silicate ions were observed, resulting in more pronounced corrosion. The microstructural observations of initial and corroded samples reveal that the residual carbon found in the microstructure do not dissolve preferentially. Cessation of mining on the Bendigo goldfield makes it evident that, as the older generation fades away, knowledge of the famous Bendigo saddle reefs will be limited in the future by their written records. It is important therefore that the summarised account by D. E. Thomas (1953) in the Geology of Australian Ore Deposits should not be misleading. Fig. 6 in this article is stated to portray a cross section and longitudinal section through a series of gold shoots in the Garden Gully 300 ft. reef. The gold shoot along the capof the saddle reef is represented as extending down the east leg in a series of prongs, with the tips of the prongs about 50 ft. apart. It is the purpose of this note to indicate that this illustration can be suspected to be a diagram of the old stopes instead of a diagram of the distribution of gold in the quartz.The original sketches of Figs. 6 and 7 in Thomas' account were extracted, I believe, from the field note books of H. S. Whitelaw, years after his death in the late twenties. Whitelaw was stationed in the Bendigo office of the Geological Survey of Victoria, carrying out geological surveys of the Bendigo mines. He was there for many years before the Gold Research committee started its investigations in 1916 and he was acutely aware of the problem attached to the distribution of gold in the reefs. He had felt concern that manyauriferous reefs were being mined without adequate study and record and he decided, as he expressed it to me, to pick up what he could as he went along. There can be little doubt that the diagrams of Figs. 6 and 7 are products of this resolve.Opportunities to investigate gold occurrences at Bendigo were limited before 1916 because the field was operated by Manuscript received at The Institute 18th November, 1960.

This paper suggests an alternative design approach for an innovative shovel dipper, for use in ground conditions where cutting of virgin ground rather than scooping of blasted material is required. Not only does the new design have an optimized dimension ratio (width:height:depth) and attachment arrangement (angle, position), but also a non-linear pro¯le in 2D and 3D. The approach is based on the simulation of a shovel's duty cycle to verify a pilot dipper model. In order to achieve a realistic simulation that could be used to evaluate a dipper design, the model is e®ectively a descriptor of actual shovel activity under soft ground conditions. The shovel geometry, motion and operation, with an emphasis on digging and dumping kinematics and dynamics are the principal elements of the simulation. The simulation considers a fresh face location, repeating tucking, digging and dumping swing motions within the geometric range of the machine, ending when no more face material remaining within reach without re- positioning. The simulation yields digging force, friction force, trajectory, ¯ll time, ¯ll factor, etc, which may be integrated into two basic considerations: power draw (output) and volume delivered (production), as indicators of dipper performance. The simulation has been used as a tool to modify an existing dipper design, prior to looping further simulation cycles. Ultimately, an optimized or totally-new-concept shape is realized. A prototype dipper as a fractional scale model will be built to verity the performance under actual mining conditions.

The pressure of low commodity prices forced the design process for the second lift of Northparkes E26 Mine to adopt a continuous improvement philosophy. The emphasis was to minimise capital expenditure while still maintaining the excellent low operating costs achieved on Lift 1. Although the first block cave lift at Northparkes is the most productive underground mine in the world and is held up as a benchmark for the use of technology in mining, areas for improvement were identified. Every area was critically assessed and investigated for the possible application of new techniques and technologies. Key learnings from the construction and production phases of Lift 1 were captured, documented and used as the starting point for the Lift 2 design. This paper shows how and why the design parameters initially used onLift 1 were changed to become the current E26 Lift 2 developmentproposal. The main differences between the two block caves arehighlighted. The mining industry is facing some key challenges that provide a compelling case for geometallurgy initiatives. Over the last 30 years, the average grade of Australian orebodies being mined has halved while the waste removed to access the minerals has more than doubled. In the last eight years, the industry’s energy consumption has increased 70 per cent while multi-factored productivity has fallen 24 per cent. The paper documents a broad range of industry case studies which demonstrate strategies for gaining value from geometallurgy.The mining industry constantly faces the key questions of how significant ore variability is on mine valuation and how would knowledge of the variability change the mining schedule, mine to mill design and operation. Using case studies the paper describes the methods used for incorporating mineral extraction attributes into orebody models and their technical integration into daily operation as well as mine planning optimisation. While pit optimisation from a fully attributed geometallurgical model highlights areas of opportunity and risk it is shown that during the scheduling phase of mine planning that significant value can be added. The benefits from these projects included reducing geotechnical and environmental risk, improving mine to mill performance, option analysis and quantified cash flow risk. There is growing acceptance within the minerals industry that ‘realistically assumed modifying factors’ defined by a competent person/s are not sufficient to mitigate the risk of funding mining ventures. Geometallurgy is moving away from factored ore reserves to data-rich block models providing reliable information for mining, metallurgical and environmental considerations.

An award is a form of recognition given for superior performance in a special field of endeavor. Each year awards are given by the Joseph A. Holmes Safety Association and the National Safety Council to the coal-mining industry's underground and open-pit mines that have worked a specific number of man-hours without a lost-time injury. These awards have a dual significance in that they prove efficiency can be attained without injury to persons. Safety awards do not result from luck or good fortune but do result from sincere desire coupled with sufficient effort and cooperation to achieve a desired goal.

Barrick Goldstrike’s (Goldstrike) AA Heap Leach Pad is an HDPE lined facility used for gold recovery from low grade ores using conventional cyanide heap leach technology, operated from 1987 through 1999. Goldstrike prepared a unique reclamation plan for the AA Leach Pad Facility to provide for a cost-effective, environmentally sound facility closure and to fulfill the State of Nevada’s closure requirements. Traditional Nevada leach pad closure has involved rinsing to reduce cyanide concentration to an acceptable level, followed by reclamation. However, certain metals and compounds are not typically reduced by rinsing and some constituents may increase in concentration with rinsing. A closure scenario to effect limited infiltration through installation of a capillary cover for the leach pad was developed. The capillary cover was constructed by placing a fine-grained layer above the coarse-grained spent leach material to create a capillary break. In an arid climate such as Nevada, the fine-grained layer will rarely reach full saturation and the cover will be able to store water during precipitation and allow removal of water through evaporation and transpiration (ET) during the growing season. A 1.22 m (4 ft) cover thickness was selected as the optimum design cover thickness. The drainage network on the surface of the re-contoured AA Heap Leach Pad was specifically designed to enhance the revegetation, reclamation, and sediment yield control aspects of the AA Heap Leach Pad closure, while resulting in a natural looking surface, compatible with the surrounding topography. Adjacent natural topographic features were used to establish target design parameters for re-contouring and erosion control design.

When the Organic Act of 1910 established the Bureau of Mines within the Department of the Interior, the Bureau's programs involved only health and safety research and, education, and fuels testing. As the Federal Government's primary agency for research in minerals, the Bureau has expanded its scientific and technological investigations to mining, processing mineral substances, eliminating occupational health and safety hazards in the mineral industries, economic development, and resource conservation. Today, Bureau activities cover a broad spectrum of programs for meeting the diverse (and sometimes conflicting) needs of mineral industries, government, and the public. In the 1960's, the Bureau initiated programs to resolve environmental problems associated with past mining and mineral processing. In the 1970's, the energy crisis raised the national consciousness concerning our limited supplies of domestic mineral and fuel resources. Dependence on foreign sources of raw materials critical to our national economy and competition from other countries for these world supplies stimulated the need to conserve and use with intelligence the Nation's minerals, metals, and fuels.1
