This evening I intend to explain the position of the gold mining industry in the light of post war trends and events.I propose initially to comment on gold production throughout the World and then proceed to the state of the industry in Australia, with an account of the efforts made within the industry to maintain levels of production. "Commissioning of a circulating dry scrubber (CDS) plant was recently completed at an existing facility in Québec, Canada. The CDS plant treats the sulphur dioxide off-gas emitted from rotary kilns in order to meet increasingly stringent environmental requirements. This installation enables the existing facility to reduce their sulphur emissions by over 90%.Proper planning of the different commissioning stages and staffing an integrated team are the most important factors required for a successful plant start-up. A strong Operational Readiness plan must be in place as early as the start of construction in order to ensure a smooth transition from commissioning to operations. Plant performance can meet or exceed performance criteria within the required timeframe if the proper group dynamic and good communication is established between construction, commissioning and operations teams.The road blocks encountered are often from systems that one assumes will operate without trouble such as air-conditioning, or design assumptions that were taken years earlier in feasibility process stages, namely the capacity of existing systems that will connect the new plant to the existing facilities. The challenges associated with rectifying these issues in addition to the requirements to properly start-up and operate a new plant without impacting production are great, and it is imperative to have the necessary resources to react quickly to any problems.IntroductionCommissioning of a circulating dry scrubber (CDS) plant was recently completed at an existing facility in Québec, Canada. The combined, de-dusted off-gas from multiple kilns is sent to the CDS, which acts as an entrained fluid bed, where the gas is contacted with a water mist, re-circulated solids and hydrated lime. The SO2 from the gas stream and the available calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)2) from the hydrated lime dissolve in the water and react to ultimately form calcium sulphites and gypsum. The solid residue (referred to as CDS residue), is the primary by-product of the process."

Keywords: Pyrometallurgy, furnace, copper coolers, freeze lining, monitoring, Saveway The use of water-cooled copper components as sidewall elements of submerged arc furnaces and other pyrometallurgical applications has become increasingly common. The high cooling efficiency of copper has made it possible to increase the service life of furnace refractories when compared to conventional refractory linings. However even the self-healing effect of ?freezing? worn areas of the lining does not necessarily protect the copper coolers against wear or corrosion completely. In order to avoid furnace explosions, various methods have been used to monitor the wear of coolers. Unfortunately, these have not been able to consistently identify localized wear. Thos Begbie (South African) and SAVEWAY (German) jointly developed technology to embed a line sensor into the copper cooler during the casting process. This system allows an exhaustive monitoring of the copper cooler. A SAVELINE sensor is placed inside the copper-cooling panel between the water-cooling passage and the hot face of the panel. The sensor follows the meandering shape of the cooling water channels. In the first instance, the sensor provides analogue information as the thickness of the copper reduces. Secondly, this wear signal will be confirmed by a signal of interruption if the sensor is washed away. Because of the structure of the sensor, a self-diagnosis is possible and indications can be confirmed (double proofed). Subsequent to the manufacture of some test pieces, coolers for a large submerged arc furnace were manufactured. The sensorized coolers have been installed at the intermittent surface (slag line) where the largest amount of corrosion has been encountered. The system has been operating since December 2005 in what is considered one of the largest submerged arc furnaces in South Africa.

A cooperative study was conducted with Emerald Coal Resources, L.P., an affiliate of Foundation Coal Corporation, and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to evaluate the effectiveness of (partially) pre-driven longwall recovery rooms supported with pumpable roof supports. This paper evaluates the load transfer mechanics associated with the advancement of the longwall face into the pre-driven recovery room and the widening of the room to recover the longwall shields. The results show that the yielding of the panel fender produced uncontrollable convergence that caused yielding of the shields and stiff pumpable roof supports when the face was approximately 10 ft from the recovery room. The shields continued to yield until the face advanced into the recovery room. Convergence in the pre-driven recovery room typically reached 6-8 in once the pumpable supports yielded and shed load through a declining residual load capacity prior to being cut out by the longwall shearer. Roof deformations occurred beyond the 32-ft horizon with total deformation ranging from 2 to 4 in, indicating that standing support was necessary to help control the span as the longwall face advanced into the pre-driven recovery room. Stability improved as the pumpable supports were cut out, thereby reducing the span between the shields and the outby pillars. In the end, the shields were successfully recovered under stable ground conditions. However, a disconcerting discovery was the load shedding of the outby pillars as the recovery room was mined into. It is postulated that this may be due to the progression of the rear “abutment” moving toward the recovery room as the panel fender and standing support in the recovery room yield and shed load. This behavior was not expected with a relatively narrow room that is fully supported with standing support. If this mechanism is indeed occurring, the width of the room and performance of the standing support becomes even more critical. Premature failure of the support can lead to excessive convergence on the shield line that cannot be controlled even with modern shields, resulting in roof instabilities that can lead to catastrophic results.

The Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) District will be extending BART service south along an 8.7-km (5.4-mile) -long corridor in the city of Fremont, California as part of the Warm Springs Extension (WSX). The WSX project will link the existing BART system to the future BART to San Jose extension. A segment of WSX is located in Fremont Central Park (referred to as the Fremont Central Park Subway Project). The Fremont Central Park Subway is considered the most complicated and geotechnically challenging portion of the project with an underground subway box being constructed near the active Hayward Fault which is capable of ground motions up to 0.75 g and is located in an aquifer which is used for water storage and supply. Soil-structure interaction analysis was used in the design of the subway box to resist deformations due to earthquake ground motions. A water-tight excavation support system has been designed to allow subway box construction while minimizing impacts to the aquifer.

The recent introduction of small coal jigs in Alabama to meet the needs of truck - mine operators for cheap and economical cleaning equipment marks another step in Alabama's pioneering record in the mechanical cleaning and preparation of coal . During the past 4 or 5 years a number of these small jigs , with capacity of 5 to 10 tons per hour , have been installed at Alabama truck mines and at a few truck mines in Illinois , Tennessee , and Pennsylvania . Most of the installations have been at mines that specialize in the production of domestic , stoker coal . This report describes three models of small jigs and includes performance data obtained recently on one of the models by the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior , in cooperation with the University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa , Ala . , for the purpose of comparing it with fullsize jigs on a performance basis . With literally hundreds of truck mines now in operation throughout the country , it has been assumed in preparing this report that there is widespread interest in the availability of small - scale inexpensive preparation equipment for use at such mines in the production of steam and domestic coal and in some instances coal for manufacture of coke . Practically none of the coal from Alabama truck mines is scld to coke - oven plants ; but in some sections of the country truck mines supply a considerable amount of coking coal, and the use of small, inexpensive washers at some of them might be very advantageous during the present war emergency from the standpoint of increasing pig - iron production through improvements in coke quality .

The Turquoise Ridge Joint Venture (TRJV) is located in northern central Nevada, and is situated within the Basin and Range province, near the northeast end of the Osgood Mountains (see Figure 1). The TRJV mine consists of typical Carlin type- gold mineralization characterized by low strength rock of altered limestones, siltstones, and mudstones. The weak nature of the ground facilitates the underhand cut and fill mining methods. TRJV has been working to optimize ground support and mechanize top cut drift sizes and eliminate operating hazards associated with jackleg drilling. Safety Factor analysis based on bolt strengths has allowed us to pursue larger sized top cut drifts and to evaluate bolt length sizes and spacing. Switching from jackleg sized drifts of 10?W x 10?H to a mechanized 12?H x12?W top cut drift design has the potential to decrease overbreak, provide more uniform drift design sizes and bolt patterns, and increase ore production by at least 38%.

To help insure the continued viability of the minerals and materials sector of the U.S. economy, the Bureau of Mines is conducting research and disseminating technology that will result in more efficient minerals extraction. As part of this effort, a process is being investigated that involves an aqueous chlorine-oxygen leaching procedure to treat complex sulfide concentrates to produce ZnCl2. Subsequent fused-salt electrolysis of the ZnCI2 produces high-purity zinc metal. Previous reports described preliminary, small-scale research on the chlorine-oxygen leaching system and fused-salt electrolysis of ZnCl2. This report discusses the details of design, construction, and longterm, continuous operation of both monopolar and bipolar fused-salt cells. The effects of temperature, electrode gap, current density, electrolyte composition, and electrode configuration on current efficiency and energy consumption were determined for a ZnCl2-KC1-NaCl electrolyte system. Zinc metal was produced at the rate of about 50 lb/day in a monopolar cell which was operated continuously for 60 days with current efficiencies from 85.8 to 98.6 pct and an average power consumption of 2.1 kwhr/lb. Bipolar cells with several different electrode configurations were operated for 90 days. A current efficiency of about 70 pct and power consumption of about 1.7 kwhr/lb of zinc were achieved using a three-electrode-pair, bipolar assembly with a chlorine gas lift pump to circulate electrolyte.

INTRODUCTION The Sacramento Regional County Sanitation District (SRCSD) serves unincorporated areas of Sacramento County, parts of the cities of Sacramento and Folsom, and the cities of Citrus Heights, West Sacramento, Rancho Cordova, and Elk Grove. SRCSD maintains 145 kilometers (km) (90 miles) of interceptors that convey a combined total of 0.6 million meters3 per day (160 million gallons per day) or more of waste-water, with additional miles of sewer interceptors that are scheduled to be built by 2020. Wastewater is conveyed to the Sacramento Regional Wastewater Treatment Plant in the southwestern portion of the County, also managed and operated by SRCSD, in interceptors with diameters as large as 3.0 m (120 inches.) As part of its overall expansion program, SRCSD has constructed a number of major interceptors over the last few years with tunneling methods due to concerns associated with either the impacts of open cut construction in an urban environment (traffic, safety, noise, environmental concerns) or the need to achieve a crossing of a stream, river, or transportation corridor. This paper focuses on a specific issue that affected construction of the Upper Northwest Interceptor (UNWI) Sections 3&4 project, located at the northern limit of the SRCSD service boundary and within the limits of the City of Sacramento. This project involved the construction of 3.2 km (2 miles) of 2.1-meter (84-inch) and 2.4 km (1.5 miles) of 1.7-meter (66-inch) diameter reinforced concrete pipe (RCP) using MTBM, EPBM, and 3.3-meter (130-inch) two-pass TBM methods. The owner elected to install the RCP using tunneling for a number of reasons including a desire to avoid traffic impacts in a dense urban corridor, to minimize disturbance to the neighborhood, and to avoid potential dewatering-induced settlement issues along the western one-third of the project. For the western portion of the alignment the 2.1-meter (84-inch) reinforced concrete interceptor pipe was to be installed using a 2.7-meter (105-inch) earth pressure balance machine (EPBM). No external dewatering of shafts or tunnels was permitted for reasons of concern about settlement, discussed previously. At the intersection of Elkhorn Boulevard and Natomas Boulevard (at the extreme northwest corner of the project) the 2.7-meter (105-inch) EPBM tunneled past a recently constructed 11-million liter (3-million gallon) water storage reservoir, passing within 3 meters (10 feet) of the tank?s shallow foundation while tunneling through clean sands with a shallow groundwater table. The paper will discuss the implemented solution to mitigate additional settlement risk that was developed as a joint collaboration between the owner, CM, designer, and contractor.

Fording Coal Limited's mine in the Rocky Mountains near Elkford, B.C. has produced 21.8 million clean tonnes of metallurgical coal from 1971 to 1980, inclusive. This production has come from several pit areas and required the removal of 149.1 million bank cubic meters of waste rock and overburden by truck-shovel and dragline operations. Waste dumps from 30m to 200m in height have been successfully constructed on natural slopes, generally between 10° and 26°. Design considerations for the dumps include foundation and soil conditions, natural slope angles and containment of weak overburden or rehandle materials. Dump control is maintained by monitoring the crest and the face of an active dump area. Crest movement is measured by extensometers locally termed "Spoil Monitors". When crest movement rates progressively increase above normal, dumping operations are temporarily relocated. Some unstable conditions and mass failures have occurred as the result of natural foundation slopes being in excess of 26°, failure of weak water saturated foundation soils or weak material being placed on the dump.

A study of the electrolysis of PbS in molten PbCl2 showed cathode efficiencies which increased with current density at fixed sulphide concentrations, and decreased with increasing sulphide concentration at fixed current densities. The anodically produced sulphur dissolved rapidly in the melt, the rate increasing with temperature and sulphide concentration. Experiments with diaphragm cells, made to determine the relative effects that dissolution of lead and sulphur have on the cathodic current efficiency, demonstrated that dissolution of sulphur was the major contributor to the lowering in efficiency.

It becomes my pleasant duty to call the meeting to order. This is our fiftieth regular meeting. And the session we are opening today, I am sure: will be as interesting and informative as those in the past. These gatherings present a fruitful opportunity for an exchange of experiences and ideas that will aid all of us in our work in the various segments within the coal industry. Walter Johnson and his Program Committee have arranged a wonderful program for us; Walter, due to his standing in the industry and his large acquaintanceship with the leaders of the industry, has really gone to town in bringing outstanding speakers and personalities to deliberate with us in our proceedings. A lot of things have happened since we last met; in the operating end, and in safety we have made marvellous headway, but we have slipped badly in the marketing end. However, I am sure the messages and discussion you will hear will point out ways and means of overcoming at least some of our difficulties. Before we get on with the program, I want to thank our hard working Secretary, Fred Whiteside, who, by the way, is a charter member of the Institute and has attended every one of the fifty meetings we have held; and the various committees who have been meeting for the past several months and who have arranged this fine program you are to hear. I hope all of you enjoy the convention; the business as well as the social sessions.

This report examines practical considerations in longwall support selection that have evolved from Bureau of Mines ground control research. The scope of discussion includes trends in support selection, analysis of shield designs, performance testing, and an examination of support and strata interaction theories and their relevance to in situ support loading. Application recommendations are made for two-leg shields. four-leg shields, and chock-shields. Two-leg shields account for 67 pct of the current active longwall installations and are used in a variety of applications. Automated control systems are likely to continue to grow in utilization. The next major change in shield design is likely to be the application of wider supports. The most effective method of performance testing longwall shields is by controlled displacement of the canopy relative to the base. Controlled force application does not control the load transfer through the shield and may not produce maximum loading in all support components. Theories of estimating support capacity based upon a detached roof block that must be maintained in equilibrium by the powered support are being challenged by concepts based upon the equivalent stiffness of the total ground supporting system.

In recent years it has been more and more recognised that applied geology can be of service to the mining industry, and many mining companies overseas now have permanent geological staff as part of the operating organisation.Most of these companies insist that the geological department must pay for itself by the savings it can make in operating cost, and the growing use of the geologist is proof that such savings are made.The geological problems in every district are different, and a description of the problems and method of attack in a specified district is a useful addition to the literature of mining geology. Very few contributions, from the standpoint of the mining company geologist, have appeared in the Australian literature so that, although the operations of Bendigo Mines Limited are still in the development stage, and its geological work newly established, a description of the routine geological work at Bendigo should beof interest.Although most Bendigo mining companies have not employed permanent geologists, they have utilised geological guidance wherever possible, and a great body of data has grown up. Acknowledgment is made here to the valuable work of the Geological Survey of Victoria, especially the writings of E. J. Dunn, H. Herman, and H. S. Whitelaw, and the maps of Caleb Thomas and H. S. Whitelaw; and also to the work of independent investigators, notably Chief Geologist, Bendigo Mines Ltd.

The purpose of this work was to investigate the hafnium-carbon phase diagram. Alloys used to study this system were prepared from high-purity components by both consumable-and nonconsumable-electrode arc melting. Data for the diagram were obtained on the alloys by metallography, optical pyrometry, thermal analysis, heat treatment, and X-ray diffraction. The data indicate that a carbide compound occurs over considerable range of composition, and that one of each of the following types of reactions occurs in the hafnium-carbon system: Peritectoid, peritectic, and eutectic. The maximum melting temperature of hafnium carbide is 3,840° C at 49 to 50 atomic percent carbon, and the composition range of hafnium carbide at temperatures of 2,150° to 2,380° C is from 37.0 to 48.5 atomic percent carbon. The hafnium a-S transformation temperature is raised on alloying with carbon from 1,750° to 1,890° C, where a peritectoid reaction isotherm occurs. Alloying hafnium with carbon increases the hafnium melting temperature from 2,190° to 2,250° C, at which temperature a peritectic reaction occurs. Hafnium carbide and carbon react at 3,055° C to form a eutectic of 68.3 atomic percent carbon.

THE Aldrich Mining Co. holds under lease from the Illinois Central R. R. Co. about 14,000 acres, in the East half of Township 12, Range 12 `V., in Marion county, Alabama, and owns other lands, of which about 1,000 acres adjoin this leased tract, making a total area of about 15,000 acres, all of which is underlain by the coal-seam upon which the company is operating. This seam is nearly horizontal ; and a ravine, diagonally crossing the tract, exposes the outcrop on either side for about 2 miles. The territory has been so divided that nearly the whole of it can be worked out by two collieries. The mines at Brilliant were opened in the Fall of 1898, and shipments began in the following spring. The original plan was to furnish steam-coal for locomotives to the Illinois Central R. R. Co.; and upon this expectation the investment of capital was made. The field was entirely new; and the softness of the coal at the outcrop induced the belief that it could be very cheaply mined. A contract for the delivery of a large quantity of coal to the railroad was accordingly executed. But with the advance of the entries to increasing distances from the outcrop, the coal proved so hard that it could no longer be drilled with a breast-auger; and the expense of mining became so great that the contract for cheap steam-coal had to be cancelled. It became evident that the work must be done with machinery and explosives, if it could be profitably done at all. On the other hand, the excellent quality of this coal opened, at the same time, a possible market not specially contemplated at the outset-namely, that of a first-rate coal for domestic and general uses. Because of the renewed importance of the strategic metal manganese the Bureau of Mines in conducting further research on pyrometallurgical methods of beneficiating manganiferous iron ores and low-grade manganese ores. Published data on the Pyrometallurgical of manganese ores have been reviewed by Joseph.5/ A method of treatment that has received less consideration than others is the matte smelting of manganese or the separation of manganese from the iron and the gangue in an ore b, formation of a matte, that consists principally of esulfide of manganese. A procedure of this type has been patented by Betts.6/ Lofquist7/ claims advantages for the production of a sulfide-oxide matte as a method of recovering manganese in alloys containing manganese and iron.
