"This paper reports the hydrometallurgical treatment of gravity concentrates of gold samples and outcrops associated with graphite ores obtained from:• flotation tailings of crystalline graphite minerals• outcrop samples of graphitic rock associated with auriferous minerals and free gold located in the Villa Union district and surrounding areas - La Rioja Province - Argentina.Previous studies of the flotation potential of crystalline graphite minerals failed to consider the presence of noble metals.The samples represent a mineralized zone of crystalline graphite which is distributed in different formations with a NE - SW trend in Maz, Punta Colorada and Las Ramaditas hills, covering an area of about 300 square kilometers."

This paper evaluates the effectiveness of remotely applied nitrogen-enhanced foam to aid in efforts to isolate and suppress a mine fire. The foam, in combination with a remotely-installed cementitious mine seal and a novel borehole pressure sampling methodology to determine the location of the suspected ignition source, was used to help control ventilation and inert the area surrounding the suspected ignition source by isolating it from oxygen. This allowed mine rescue teams to safely enter the mine, seal the area, and begin recovery operations to successfully return the mine to full production.

"Collecting mineral resources from the seabed using a seafloor crawling robot is the firststep in the mining operation. The second-step is lifting the collected ore up to the water surface. For lifting through a riser pipe, prevention of pipe clogging (flow assurance) and economic and eco-friendly up-transferring is of the utmost concern.During collection of mineral ores, the production rate can be highly variable because of the variability in the distribution of the mineral deposit, variations in seafloor topography, fluctuations robot speed, and variations in performance of the mining robot, etc. Direct transfer of the collected ore to the riser pipe might cause unpredictable and serious problems such as over-loading of the lift pump, reduction in the life of the equipment, pipe clogging, severe increase of down-time, critical damage of equipment, further propagation of damages, and total failure after all.As a counter measure to these potential problems, a buffer station has been adopted, which is capable of storing the collected ore for a certain time and simultaneously regulating the transfer of the ore into the riser pipe. A pilot buffer has been developed by KRISO/KIOST (see Fig. 1)."

"SynopsisThe global resources and commodities market has become highly competitive. While southern Africa’s abundance of minerals resources is still unrivalled, it has lost considerable dominance in terms of production output. The sustainability of southern Africa’s mining industry is increasingly becoming dependent on its ability to manage the performance of its operations well. A valuable tool for monitoring and managing performance is the use of key performance areas (KPAs) – which are those areas of performance that are reflected explicitly or implicitly in the vision and strategies of an organization and reflect the critical success factors of the organization. This paper is a review of key performance areas in the southern African mining delivery environment. The KPAs discussed in this paper have been identified by comparing KPAs of the several mining houses engaged in surface mining operations in southern Africa and then extracting those KPAs that are common to most of them. Although the authors support the view that each organization should develop KPAs to specifically fit its needs, the study reveals that five KPAs – safety and health, costs, product quality, fleet management, and delivery should form a default list that covers the key areas that any organization should consider when choosing KPAs. KPIs are those subsets of KPAs that we measure in order to manage KPAs.IntroductionThe global resources and commodities market has become highly competitive. Efforts to win an enriched manganiferous product from the Missouri Valley deposits of South Dakota have included an application of most known ore-dressing devices and have been largely unsuccessful. At least two methods showed some promise of success and were the subjects of detailed Investigation by the Bureau of Mines during the period from July 1945 to August 1947. A series of mining and beneficiation tests were undertaken to determine conditions under which the most feasible concentration methods could be employed and to define the limits of such applications in terms of the character of the final beneficiated product. In the absence of a significant current market for any conceivable product of beneficiation, the extent to which applied methods might be considered successful was measured in terms of ratios of recoveries to grade, regardless of the adaptability of such beneficiated products to further metallurgical or direct usage. The results of all investigations show that production of a shale-free, concretionary, manganese-bearing product by any known method requires great sacrifices in manganese recovery. Products of beneficiation, with specifications permitting some inclusion of shale, can probably be most effectively produced by methods employing specialized jigging equipment as the principal functional unit of a process.

Several spatially and/or temporally distinct phases of epithermal activity can be recognised in the Horohoro-Matahana Basin area of the Taupo Volcanic Zone. In the northern Matahana Basin a 140 - 350 ka age range is proposed for mineralised debris flow clasts and related (?) epithermal  mineralisation intersected in a recent drillhole. To the east, a ca. 40 - 50 ka age range is suggested for epithermal activity in the Waikaukau alteration zone which was focused along the Guthrie Fault. Hydrothermal explosion breccias occur over 13 km within the Guthrie Graben, and are probably sourced from vents in the south. Assuming a common origin, these breccias are constrained to a 45 - 50 ka age range. Within the Horohoro hydrothermal system (around the present hot spring), older (15 - 50 ka) and younger (0 - 15 ka) features can be distinguished.

This paper describes the use of dynamic scheduling and discrete event control to provide coordinated control of multiple automated vehicles. In the past decade there have been significant advances in the field of robotics for underground mining. As this trend progresses toward a realization of a completely automated underground mine the need for a central control system, capable of providing coordination for multiple vehicles in a semistructured environment, becomes more evident. In the past year general research into multi-robot coordination has been applied to the underground mining scenario and demonstrated in a scaled model underground mine in a laboratory setting. This system shows significant potential to be adopted into a full-scale implementation for mine wide automation.

Undisturbed minor sedimentary structures-cross-bedding, ripplemarking, scour-and-fill, slumping-are present in most of the rock types in the Willyama Series of the Broken Hill district and in the orebodies.This indicates that there has not been any significant movement of mineral matter within or into the rocks during or after metamorphism, that the rocks have not flowed during tectonic deformation or during metamorphism, and that the ore is an original sedimentary deposit in its sedimentary position.Sedimentary processes, depositional and mechanical, are indicated to explain the deposition of sedimentary metallic minerals and their concentration into large masses. The Broken Hill orebodies show evidence of these processes.INTRODUCTIONI visited Broken Hill for one week in May, 1958, at the invitation of Mr. Haddon F. King, Director of Consolidated Zinc Pty. Ltd. He asked me to examine the rocks and orebodies in the mines and outcrops at Broken Hill for:1. Sedimentary structures that might be used to determine the facing of the banding;2. Indications of the original nature of the rocks if I considered they may have been sedimentary; and3. During 1986, the Government continued with efforts to ease the country's almost total reliance on coffee exports for trade revenues by allocating 45% of the Government's budget to commerce and industrial projects. The collapse in coffee prices in 1985 continued to exacerbate the country's growing trade deficit, weakened currency, and dwindling reserves of foreign exchange in 1986. Amoco Burundi Petroleum Corp., a subsidiary of Amoco International Oil Co., continued with plans to drill at least two exploration wells in Lake Tanganyika in 1987. Both offshore and onshore drilling exploration was planned by Amoco Burundi. Any oil or gas finds were expected to have substantial impact on the Burundian economy, as a major portion of the country's trade deficit was directly attributable to petroleum and gas imports.

STATISTICS of injuries in the quarrying and related industries in the United States first became available when the Bureau of Mines collected reports from the operating companies for the calendar year 1911. Since then reports have been collected annually. The present bulletin, covering the calendar year 1952, is the 33d publication containing statistical data on injuries at quarries and related plants, and it is the first to be published since 1944. The last publication was Bulletin 458, Quarry Accidents in the United States during the Calendar Year 1942. The unpublished statistics for 1942-51 may be found in the Appendix of this bulletin. The Bureau of Mines is authorized to collect data on injuries at quarries, but there is no Federal law that compels operators to supply such data, and the reports received from operators are voluntary responses to the Bureau's requests for information. Although the figures presented herein may not be complete for the entire industry, every effort has been exerted to make them so, and the figures given are believed to be thoroughly representative of the hazards to which quarry workers are exposed. Moreover, the figures are com¬parable as between States -which is significant in view of the lack of uniformity among the States as regards classes of plants covered by State laws, classes of injuries covered by State reports, and other factors that tend to make it impracticable or impossible to compare the injury experience of one State with that of another or to comprehend the relative importance of the various causes of injuries in the industry as a whole.

This paper discusses the background, requirements, need and content of plans for management of drinking water self-supplied to mining-related operations, including construction camps, especially in remote areas of Western Australia. The paper discusses the importance of cooperation between regulators, the mine site operator and the consultant in preparing a plan fully compliant with the Australian Drinking Water Guidelines to protect the quality and safety of drinking water supplied to mine sites. The paper outlines some of the issues that need to be addressed in preparing a drinking water quality management plan, such as hazard identification, risk assessment, the multiple-barrier approach and the concept of critical control points. Shallow rainfall-induced landslides in residual and colluvial hillslopes and steep embankments are a common occurrence in many settings [1, 2, 3]. While occasionally posing a threat to property and life-safety, they more often present an ongoing maintenance problem and can lead to the initiation of larger failures. Typically, these slides consist of 2 to 4-foot thick translational movements of silty and clayey soils down slope through the reduction of strength from increases in pore water pressures. Direct surficial infiltration and indirect groundwater seepage are the normative triggers for failure. In the residential community of Blackhawk, California, located east of the San Francisco Bay, these types of landslides are a common occurrence (Figure 1). However, shallow landslides have also been a repetitive and constant problem along many state highways where steep embankments have been constructed in close proximity to busy thoroughfares. Given the real threat to property values in residential and commercial settings and the constant maintenance problem posed to lifeline structures such as utilities, roadways, and pipelines, new methods to deal with these landslides are needed.

An absorption-desorption model of particle reactivity was employed to describe the observed relationship between two apparently diverse phenomena which have been the subject of considerable study at the U.S. Bureau of Mines: (1) coal-rock dust reflectance and (2) coal-rock dust explosibility. The model accounts for heterogeneities in particle-size and material properties; however, in the present report, only particle-size distribution is considered. A mean particle-size parameter, appropriate to the explosion extinction process, is derived, and then taken as appropriate to describing optical reflectance. The derived form-to-function relationships for the two processes, when compared with experimental data, suggest that a problem exists with previously derived theory relating optical reflectance to rock dust concentration. A reexamination of that theory leads to a new theoretical expression, changed by a factor of 2, for the variation of rock dust concentration with reflectance which is in quite good agreement with experimental results. The current work offers justification for measuring and establishing rock dust requirements for specific coal dust size distribution(s) found in the mine-distributions that undoubtedly depend on the mining method and the type of coalbed.

The number of extended cut mining systems has increased significantly in coal mines over the last decade, and there is a constant push to extend the face ventilation systems to even greater setback distances. The need to maintain airflow at setback distances of 12.2 m (40 ft) and beyond requires that methods for delivering intake air to the face be improved, or alternative ventilation techniques be implemented. The emphasis of this research effort was to examine various techniques to improve the distribution of available air at the mining face in order to reduce face methane levels. A study was conducted comparing the performance of a jet fan, used in conjunction with a machine mounted scrubber, with blowing curtain ventilation in a 27.5 m (90 ft) heading. In addition, a second study was performed on blowing curtain systems examining how scrubber flow, intake air velocity, and curtain setback influence face methane concentrations. Results showed that when the heading advances to a depth of 27.5 m (90 ft) blowing curtain systems were more efficient at diluting face methane levels when compared to a jet fan. Also, increases in scrubber flows and curtain velocity resulted in lower face methane concentrations for blowing curtain systems at 9.2 and 15.2 m (30 and 50 ft) setbacks.

This information circular describes the application of modern methods and equipment in sinking a vertical, 916-foot-deep by 16-foot-diameter, concrete-lined access shaft for the Harold D. Roberts tunnel near Montezuma, Colo. Although the access shaft was merely a construction facility to expedite completion of a 23-mile water-diversion tunnel, a circular shaft of this type would be equally adaptable for mine development or other purposes. Comparable sinking methods and equipment could be used for similar shafts within a wide range of sizes and depths. SUMMARY In addition to excavation and support of the basic access shaft to tunnel grade, the overall sinking project involved initial preparation of a surface site and plant, subsequent construction of a tunnel-level station and loading pocket at the shaft bottom, and ultimate conversion of the basic shaft into a hoisting and access facility for tunnel operations. The sinking period for the basic shaft approximated one year. Actual tunnel operations through the converted shaft began on April 3, 1958, approximately 19 months after the project was initiated.

"A model for gold leaching was developed and implemented into a simulator. The simulator uses a description of the ore that is based on the mineral composition and precious metal content. The model accounts for the distribution of minerals and precious metals through the size intervals. An ore texture model based on precious metals and minerals grain sizes within the ore is used to predict the exposed surface of the species in the various size intervals. A model is proposed to predict the rate of dissolution of any species dissolution using the exposed surface, particle size, cyanide and oxygen concentrations, temperature, pH and agitation. The flow of slurry through a leaching tank is modelled using a parallel arrangement of perfect mixers to simulate a bypass and a Cholette-Cloutier mixer model. The simulator can be used for circuit optimization but was developed to provide an environment for learning the basic concepts of process analysis methods. Examples are given to illustrate the application of the simulator for planning tracer tests and sampling campaigns.INTRODUCTIONThe constant pressure to improve the operation of processes that are already close to optimum imposes to plant engineers to be aware of the available process analysis tools and to be able to use them to assess process operation and make a diagnosis to possible problems. Some of these tools are:•,Sampling the streams of a process;•,Data reconciliation;•,Analysis of mixing in reactors;•,Estimation of rate parameters;•,Optimal tuning and flow sheet modification;•,Automatic control and real time optimization.Although some of these tools are part of the curriculum of many university engineering programs, the students are not exposed to actual process analysis problems. In addition the complexity of the ore dressing processes compounded with unavoidable measurement errors and plant disturbances can discourage many motivated engineers. These factors often lead to an incomplete valorization of the collected data and a poor return on the investment associated with the sampling, testing and analysis of the samples.Simulators are readily available for process optimization (Yalcin and Shang, 2006) by allowing:•,The simulation of various flow sheet configurations;•,The simulation of a change of operating conditions;•,The simulation of various control strategies;•,The training of plant operators.However few simulators have been developed with the objective of providing an environment for training plant engineers and technicians to the use of tools for process analysis and optimisation."

"IN 1975, Nova Scotia produced 1.8 million tons of coal with a FOB mine value of $47.6 million. Of this total, about 30 per cent or 600,000 tons was coking coal and the remainder was steam and industrial-grade coal. The Nova Scotia Power Corporation consumed 630,000 tons in three generating stations and 570,000 tons were sold to Sydney Steel for making coke for its steel operations. Exports, principally to Great Britain, comprised 370,000 tons in 1975 in addition to the 300,- 000 tons shipped to other provinces for use by cement and pulp and paper companies. In 1975, just over 100,000 tons of coking coal were imported into the province from Alberta. Before 1975, low-volatile coking coal was traditionally obtained from the United States. In 1975, production came from seven individual mines and one project involving reclamation from mine dumps in Pictou County. Of the seven producers, four are owned by the Cape Breton Development Corporation, a federal Crown corporation; the remaining three are small independent mines, but, even though small, they are sizeable contributors to the economies of their local areas. After 101 years of continuous operation, Devco's Princess mine was closed in 1975. The Nova Scotia coal industry, in terms of value, accounted for about half of total mineral production in 1975. The industry provides jobs for 3,000 men and women. It is also significant that in 1975 Nova Scotia produced about 6.5 per cent of Canada's total coal production of 28.3 million tons. An examination is made of some of the consequences of a magmatic gas phase developed during a late stage of differentiation of an acidic magma. Elements possessing halides with high partial pressures (Sn, Mo, W) may be removed from the magma by distillation into gas bubbles in the manner suggested by Fenner (1933). The common chalcophile elements are not affected by this mechanism, but form sulphides which may become attached to rising gas bubbles by one of three distinct mechanisms. The gas bubbles may then carry the sulphides upwards and concentrate them in some favourable locus, giving rise to an ore-forming fluid. The process would operate selectively upon different sulphides and is capable of providing an explanation of the paragenetic succession observed in ore deposits as well as other important geological criteria of ore genesis.INTRODUCTIONThere is a widespread belief among contemporary geologists that a large and important class of ore deposits is genetically related in some way·to acidic igneous rocks. This class includes the tin-tungsten-molybdenum-bismuth type of mineralization as well as a variety of sulphide deposits.A basic problem confronting explanation of the genesis of these deposits is the manner in which trace elements which were originally widely dispersed in granitic magmas were segregated therefrom and concentrated into economic mineral deposits.The principles underlying the formation of one group of minerals deposits (pegmatites) related to granitic magmas ate reasonably well understood, largely due to the labours of Goldschmidt and his school. Longwall mining has gained the reputation as being the safest extraction method in underground coal mines. However, one of the most difficult tasks associated with longwall mining is moving the face once a panel is completed. Based on Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) fatality reports since 1996, longwall face recovery operations have claimed the lives of 5 U.S. miners and have resulted in numerous injuries. Recovery operations can be hazardous because they involve moving large pieces of equipment in very confined spaces. They are also conducted in highly stressed ground conditions due to front abutment loads generated by panel extraction. Shield removal is the most hazardous operation during face recovery because miners are constantly exposed to the unpredictable gob edge. To protect the miners, one or more walking shields, cribbing and/or other supplemental roof and standing supports are typically employed as breaker line supports as each shield is removed. At the Harris No. 1 Mine in southern WV, mobile roof supports (MRS?s) have been used in lieu of traditional walking shields on 17 face moves since 1997. MRS?s are shield-like support units mounted on crawler tracks and are commonly used during room-and-pillar retreat mining operations. For longwall recovery, the two biggest advantages that MRS?s have over traditional walking shields are that they are remotely controlled and are highly maneuverable. MRS?s have contributed to safer shield recovery and shorter move times at the Harris No. 1 Mine. This paper will address both the safety and the operational issues associated with MRS usage during shield recovery. It will also discuss new developments, including the use of the inherently safer battery powered MRS?s, which have been recently certified by the Mine Safety and Health Administration.
