Wellbore enlargement was tested using hydrazine hydrate in a gas-storage well in Ohio to increase the well productivity. The wellbore was to be enlarged by chemical disaggregation of the sandstone adjacent to the wellbore. Productivity immediately declined 49.1 percent and gradually declined to zero in 7 months. A down-hole camera survey showed a white-to-gray precipitate covering the entire wellbore surface. The precipitate was chemically analyzed and identified as mostly carbazic acid, a hydrazine derivative of carbonic acid. Formation of this precipitate was not anticipated; this viscous sub-stance caused the gradual loss in productivity of the well. The wellbore was not enlarged. Laboratory tests were run to determine what clay stabilization measures could be taken in sandstone cores to prevent clay swelling and particle migration caused by hydrazine hydrate. Normal clay stabilization methods did not prevent the virtually complete loss in permeability to hydrazine hydrate. Other laboratory tests using natural gas diluted with small amounts of carbon dioxide confirmed the ease with which carbazic acid could be formed in a hydrazine hydrate-saturated environment within and adjacent to the wellbore.

During the 1970?s, the Bureau of Mines investigated a particle agglomeration technique for improving the flow of leaching solution through heaps of clayey or crushed, low-grade gold-silver ores. This technology has been adopted on a broad scale by the precious-metal-processing industry. This report presents information on the application of agglomeration technology to finely ground precious-metal-bearing tailings. Two commercial operations that have benefited from agglomeration technology are discussed. The technology is cost effective because of decreased leach times and improved precious metal recoveries.

The Weber pool in Washington County, Okla. (fig. 1), covers an area extending from 2 miles east and slightly north of Bartlesville, Okla., to a point approximately 2-1P tiles northeast of Dewey, Okla. The pool is a part of the area designated by the Standing Committee on Oil Field Nomenclature, Kansas-Oklahoma Division, Mid-Continent Oil & Gas Association, as the Bartlesville-Dewey field. In the following discussion of the geology, development, and exploitation of the Weber pool, the writers, by means of structure maps, cross sections through various parts of the reservoir, and tabulated development data and production statistics, have recorded salient information on a field that was developed before .1910 in an Area that has been repressured since 1926. The total oil production to January 1, 19.0., from the 2,639 developed acres considered in this report, was approximately 14 million barrels, or a recovery of about 5,3;2 barrels per acre, or 227 barrels per acre-foot. The production of the estimated 18 million barrels of recoverable oil remaining in the Bartlesville sand reservoir will require the initiation of additional secondary-recovery practices on some of the leases and the application of a more systematic repressuring program on others.

THIS paper discusses elementary laws pertaining to seismic reflection methods and presents a general and simple criterion for determining the direction of dipping of a reflection horizon from observational data of distance and time. The important development of practical geophysics and the successful results obtained in America, Germany, and other countries, caused introduction of geophysical methods of prospecting in Poland. Of all methods, seismic prospecting has proved most successful in the area of the Carpathian foreland, where new oil reserves are to be expected. Because of the great depth of the sedimentary column in that area, rang-ing sometimes over 2000 meters, it was obvious that only the seismic reflection method could give reliable information regarding the structural features of these strata at such a depth. During the experimental surveys it appeared that the complicated geological conditions of that area do not always allow prediction of the depth and the angle of dipping of reflecting horizons, and for that reason information about the inclination of a given horizon has great importance in the determination of subsurface structure. Therefore the problem arises of obtaining from seismic reflection data reliable information as to the direction of dipping of reflecting strata, without any previous knowledge of the average velocity and depth of geologic horizons under consideration.

"The comminution energy curve is a profoundly simple graphical technique that displays detailed operating efficiency information for industrial comminution processes. The database underlying the methodology has recently more than doubled, to now contain a substantial fraction of the international comminution output (1.7 billion tonnes of rock per year) across more than 8 major commodities. This increase has deepened the analytical capabilities and effectiveness for assessing comminution circuit performance in relation to comparable operating mines. This paper will explore how the energy curve methodology can be used to examine the ability of stirred mill technologies to increase efficiency.Specifically, this paper explores how the energy curves methodology can be used to present energy efficiency gains achieved at three mines employing a stirred mill technology under different duties. The first of these cases studies was conducted by Rosa (2014) who compared the performance of two ball mills operating in parallel with a Vertimill in the regrinding circuit at the Samarco Iron project in South East Brazil. The Vertimill was found to achieve the same product specification while consuming 40% less energy. Brissette (2010) investigated the impact of grinding media on the performance of both ball mills and Vertimills. The energy savings achieved varied from 10% to 40% for the ball mills and 30% to 60% for the Vertimills. Lastly, Bergerman (2012) investigated the operating conditions of the Sossego regrind circuit from 2006 to 2011 against design specifications and laboratory testing. A new high intensity grinding technology has been developed and is now being commercialized by Hicom International of Australia. This has led to the development and manufacture of Hicom 120 grinding mills which are now being sold internationally for a range of mining industry applications. The first commercial process application has been for the diamond sector, where the ability of the mill to remove host kimberlite rock by attritioning, with no damage to the thereby liberated diamonds, is seen to be a most beneficial attribute. There are, however, many other mineral industry applications for this mill. The design of the Hicom mill is unique. Based on a high speed centrifugal motion of the grinding chamber, very high power intensity is delivered to the grinding process. Most significantly, a high acceleration field, 50 times stronger than gravity is produced, creating very high power input per unit of mill volume, and exceptionally fast particle breakage rates, typically 50 - 100 times greater than those in conventional tumbling mills. A mill developing such forces has significant implications to comminution technology and practice.

The Electrolytic Zinc Company of Australasia Limited commenced productive operations during February, 1936, at the- Rosebery and Hercules mines, which are situated near Rosebery, Tasmania. At this time it was decided that before re-organizing the steel sharpening shop a test should be made of the relative merits of conventional drill-steel and detachable bits. For this purpose Ingersoll-Rand type"I" thread centre hole.jackbits were selected and seventy-two of these were tested against conventional steel. Results indicated that, under the conditions pertaining at these mines, j ackbits should prove more economical than conventional drill-steel bits, and that a large-scale test, under working conditions, should be made. This was done by gradually replacing conventional drill-steel with jackbits at the Rosebery mine. Results were satisfactory and by the end of 1936 both mines were using only the jackbits.

This paper presents the experience gained and the lessons learned over the last decade within the numerous offshore foundation projects undertaken in the offshore waters of Denmark and Belgium by COWI A/S of Denmark. This experience derives from the close collaboration with, and interaction between the owners, contractors, and engineers in the various stages of project development. In turn, the experience draws on COWI's experience within foundation of large bridges world wide over half a century. Focus is on two pioneering gravity base foundation projects: ? Nysted in Denmark, currently the largest offshore windfarm worldwide with 72 Nos Bonus 2.3 MW turbines in water depths up to 10 m in the relatively benign inner Danish waters ? Thornton Bank in Belgium, where the first phase - comprising 6 Nos REpower 5MW-turbines of a total of 60 - are planned to be built in the rough North Sea in water depths exceeding 25 m.

In recent development of piled raft design, the contribution of both raft and piles to tolerate the loads is taken into account, depending on the stiffness and contributions of involved elements i.e.; piles, raft and surrounding soil. The piles are usually required not to ensure the overall stability of the foundation but to act as settlement reducers. One alternative method of foundation design is therefore to introduce piles purely as a means of improving or enhancing the stiffness of the base soil by structurally disconnecting the piles from the raft. In this paper, two and three dimensional finite element analysis of disconnected pile-raft systems are performed on three case studies including a 12-storey residential building in Iran, a 39-storey twin tower in Indonesia, and the 256m height of Messeturm tower in Frankfurt, Germany. The analysis include different geometrical parameters, e.g., pile spacing and embedment length, arrangement and raft thickness for foundation system to obtain the optimized design functions and to clarify the role of each parameter and method of analysis. The parametric study results and comparison to a few field measurements indicate that by concentrating the piles in the central area of the raft foundation leads to the optimum design with the minimum total length of piles. This achievement can be considered as a criterion for project cost efficiency. On the other hand, disconnected piled-raft systems can significantly reduce the settlements and raft internal bending moments. Finally, the comparison indicates that simple and faster 2D analysis has almost the identical results to 3D analysis which is complicated and time consuming.

Introduction The Sydney coal-field extends for a distance of thirty miles along the northeastern coast of Cape Breton island. At a central focal point at the tip of the south arm of Sydney harbour, seven miles or so in from the Atlantic ocean, is the city of Sydney, with Port Morien to the southeast and Sydney Mines to the north . Mining centres along the ocean coast between these points include Birchgrove, Reserve, Glace Bay, and Waterford. The field is divided into three districts or 'basins', namely, Morien basin to the south, Glace Bay in the centre, and the Lingan-Sydney Mines basin to the northeast. The eastern and western portions of the latter are known as the Lingan and the Sydney Mines basins, respectively. Six distinct coal seams are described as existing in the Morien basin, nine in the Glace Bay basin, and six in both the Lingan and the Sydney Mines basin. Although known by different names in the several basins, a definite continuity of the seams has been established.

The Commission maintains a data base first computerised in 1957 and containing information from over 18 000 boreholes located mainly in the Latrobe Valley area. Some of the borehole derived information dates from the turn of the century, although most of it has been collected as a result of Commission investigations conducted over the past 40 years. The Resource Data Base contains not only information gained directly from the drilling itself but includes the results of chemical and physical testing on many hundreds of thousands of samples retrieved from boreholes. Replacement value of the Resource Data Base has been estimated to be around $200 million, and it's integrity and accessibility is clearly of paramount importance, not only to existing mining and power generating functions but to the future evaluation and use of the vast brown coal Resource.

Since 1920, the Bureau of Mines and, other agencies have conducted numerous investigations of methods of communication for use in mines in times of disaster or emergency. The results of these investigations have been reported in various publications (3, 4; 5, 6, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16). In November 1944, the Bureau of Mines resumed the study of emergency underground communications. Until March 1946, the program was directed toward reexamining methods of underground communication that indicated possibilities of success. Since April 1946, the principal interest of this investigation has been in methods of application of radio to communication in mines, low-frequency radio seeming to offer the most promise as a successful method of emergency mine communication. Results achieved in reexamining other methods and in the investigation or the application of low-frequency radio between November 1944 and September 1946 were reported previously in a publication entitled "Some Studies on Emergency Mine Communications".

This report describes a study, conducted jointly by BethEnergy Mines Inc. and the Bureau of Mines, to assess the effects of longwall front abutment loading on various supplemental support materials utilized in a predriven recovery room. The purpose of the predriven recovery room is to reduce longwall equipment transfer time by eliminating the premove preparation associated with conventional recovery methods. In addition, the room provides a large area in which face salvage equipment can maneuver. Results of four recovery-room study areas show the progression and influence of the front abutment on the longwall panel and supports and their subsequent behavior. The best performance (i. e. the support that most facilitated recovery) of support material was achieved through the use of a concrete mixture which had a sand content of 35 percent by volume. The longwall transfer time was reduced by 30 percent which translates to a production advantage of 37,000 raw tons of coal per panel.

A Iaboratory drilling rig has been devised and placed in operation which permits the application of hydrostatic, terrastatic, and formation pore pressures to a rock sample for drilling under controlled conditions. Calibrated rests of this equipment in-dicate qualitative agreerment with field results on the effect of weight on bit, rotary speed, and rate of circ~~lation on drilling rate. Tests under pressure, using water and air as the drilling fluids, indicate that when drilling saturated limestone samples, a pressure differential between hydrostatic and formation pressure is the only pressure which affects drilling rate. A differential in either direction causes a reduction in rate, but the same diflerential from the wellbore into the formation causes the greater reduction. Also, in lime.stone, air favorably affected drilling rote only when compared to water at high hydrostatic pressurre, all other conditions remaining constant. Large increases in drilling rate with air could be obtained in the laboratory only while drilling a shale, which offered a limited permeability to nitrogen and which could be drilled with a differential from the formation into the wellbore. In general, the magnitude of the changes due to the pressure effect were small compared to changes in drilling rate obtainable by changing either bit weight or rotary speed. INTRODUCTION In the course of Humble's drilling research program, the desirability of investigating several factors which lend themselves to laboratory rather than field study became obvious. Principal reasons for this are the expense involved in field studies and the difficulty of exercising the required degree of control. Of primary importance are investigations of the effect of fluid pressure on rock rate, the effect of pressure on rock drillability, and a study of the fundamental mechanics of rock failure and chip generation. Several years ago some work in the laboratory on the effect of mud properties on drilling rate was re- ported to the API', but the completion of this work and the investigation of the other variables affecting drilling rate required equipment somewhat more elaborate than that used on these earlier tests. This equipment has been assembled to form Humble's Drilling Engineering laboratory. To date only the effect of pressure on rock drillability while using water and air has been investigated, and this work is not yet complete. Facilities are available to investigate the effect of fluid properties on rate of penetration, and information is being assembled on a current basis on the mechanics of drilling. The biggest Port of Latin America - the Santos Port in São Paulo, Brazil - has been drilled and blasted by controlled underwater techniques in order to remove around 40,000 m3 (52,318 cubic yard) of rock divided in two outcrop rocks: Teffé and Itapema. Underwater pumped explosive, in combination with small cartridges areas, was successfully used in order to reach a target depth of -15m (-49 ft) and a width of 220m (722 ft) in the navigation channel. It was the first time that a pumped explosive was used in underwater blasting in Brazil and it represents a historic benchmark for projects of this kind in this country. The main challenges faced in this project include the control of the ground vibration, due to the necessity to carry out detonations 40m (131 ft) away from the quay wall - where the passenger terminal and the 80 year-old warehouse were located – and the rush schedule available, in order to finish the underwater drilling and blasting phase before the coming cruise season. Therefore, the perfect combination of an ideal pumped product with an effective pumping system has permitted to carry out the project in a record of less time than 3 months (against to the original expected time of 18 months), with all vibration events under control as result of the special ground vibration program carried out.

This study has been carried out to use the waste sludges generated at Pohang Iron & Steel Co. Ltd. (POSCO) as the raw materials of Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC). The burnability index of the raw mixture and the hydration characteristics and compressive strength of clinker have been examined. The waste sludges were mainly composed of CaO, SiO2, Al2O3, and Fe2O3, the main component of OPC. The Burnability index of mixture was improved, according to the replacement content of POSCO sludge increase. POSCO sludge can be used as a raw material for cement because the state of mineral development and property of clinker produced from POSCO sludge are similar to the plain. Therefore, POSCO sludges can be used as the source materials of iron and calcium oxide.

The authors describe two stratiform intrusions within a two miles thick ophiolite belt, one of the many ophiolite (serpentine) belts of the eugeosynclinal sequences of the Kalgoorlie System (metamorphic age c.2700 million years). Unusually good evidence of gravitational differentiation involving cumulates for an Alpine type peridotite-gabbro intrusion has been obtained, in spite of modifications of the original igneous rocks imposed by regional metamorphism. Unmetamorphosed relics of cumulate rocks are a surprising feature of this occurIfence.'fhe differentiation process reflected in the layered sequences is compared to that of the Stillwater Intrusion, Montana. Phase, cryptic and rhythmic layering are recognized. The economic significance of this study lies not only in the possibility of nickel mineralization in this ophiolite belt, but also in that much detailed information on the nature of these belts, which is difficult to obtain in the case of the more altered and sheared rocks of the belts carrying gold and nickel ore deposits nearby, is gathered from the Yilmia occurrences.

The objective of the work reported herein was to evaluate state-of-the-art repeaters used in wireless communications to determine their suitability for use in extending the range of portable and mobile communications in underground mine applications. The scope of the work included wireless repeaters in the frequency range from LF (500 kilohertz) up to the one giga-hertz range. These repeaters included not only single-channel repeaters, that is F1/F1 repeaters for short range simplex party line communications, but in addition, F1/F2 type repeaters currently commercially available in the HF, VHF and UHF bands.

Davis tube tests were conducted on a Koolanooka magnetite iron ore sample, supplied by Kingstream Steel Ltd, to determine the optimum grind size, maximum iron recovery and the cleanness of the products from low intensity magnetic separation (LIMS). The ore sample contained 38.6 per cent iron, 37.8 per cent silica, 6.5 per cent magnesia and 0.54 per cent alumina. XRD and microscopic examination showed that the main minerals in the ore were amphibole (42 per cent), magnetite (39 per cent), and quartz (14 per cent). Amphibole, (Mg, Ca, Fe),Si8O22.2(OH), containing 50.3 per cent SiO2, 35 per cent FeO and 11.5 per cent MgO is the main gangue mineral in the ore, and about 30 per cent of the total iron in the ore is contained in the amphibole. Heavy liquid separation tests showed that it is very difficult to separate iron from silica by gravity separation to obtain a high quality iron concentrate. Three grind sizes were initially tested, ie 45, 38 and 20 ¦m. It was found that grinding to 100 per cent -38 ¦m (P80 of 29 ¦m) appeared to be the best option for liberating the magnetite from gangue minerals. The iron recovery to the LIMS magnetic product for the 100 per cent -38 ¦m sample reached 73 per cent and the iron content was 65 per cent. Further test work suggested that the optimum grind size was a Psu of 25 ¦m.
