X-ray diffraction and metallographic examination of binary Mn-rich alloys with Ti revealed the presence of intermediate phases in this system. A binary R phase has been identified and also a phase having an a-Mn type structure. The X-ray pattern of the phase TiMn3 is presented and a tentative phase diagram for the Mn-rich portion of this binary system has been constndcted. MANGANESE-rich alloys with titanium have been subjected to thermal analysis at temperatures down to 1100°C by Hellawell and Hume-Rothery.1 Their results indicate the existence of an intermediate phase TiMn3 in this binary system. This phase appears to coexist with the Laves phase TiMn2, and with terminal solid solutions based on the allotropes of manganese, at least down to 1100°C. The above investigators did not attempt to determine the crystal structure of this phase, however. Since, by analogy to the binary systems Mn-V and Mn-Cr3 one might expect to find a phase in this region of the diagram, it seemed desirable to obtain X-ray diffraction patterns of alloys in the concentration range in question, in order to ascertain whether the sigma phase or related structures occur. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES Alloys were prepared by arc-melting electrolytic manganese and iodide titanium in a water-cooled copper crucible under a helium atmosphere. Excess manganese was added to each melt in order to allow for losses incurred during melting. The alloys were then wrapped in molybdenum foil and sealed in evacuated quartz tubes for annealing at various temperatures, as shown in Table I, followed by quenching in cold water. Although the inside of the tubes showed evidence for some loss of manganese from the specimen during annealing, there was no evidence of any reaction between the specimen and either the molybdenum foil or the quartz tube at these temperatures. It was later found that the manganese loss was considerably reduced by annealing these alloys in sealed quartz tubes containing one atmosphere of purified argon. As an added precaution the surface of each specimen was ground off before crushing the alloys to -270 mesh powder, using a hardened steel mortar and pestle. X-ray powder patterns were obtained using either FeKa or CrKa radiation in an asymmetrical focusing camera, which gave excellent dispersion of the closely spaced lines. Pictures were also obtained using a Debye camera of 5-cm radius which provided data in the angular region not covered by the focusing camera. The alloy specimens were polished and examined metallographically, using an etchant consisting of 60 pct glycerine, 20 pct nitric acid, and 20 pct hydrofluoric acid. The 10-g buttons were in each case broken in half and found to be well-melted and free of any gross segregation. One half of certain alloy buttons was submitted to chemical analysis in the "as-cast" condition. No appreciable change in composition seemed to occur during annealing . There is a considerable amount of lignite reserve in the form of thick seams in Turkey. It is rather complicated to predict the characteristics of strata response to mining operation in thick seams. However, a comprehensive evaluation of ground behaviour is a prerequisite for maintaining an efficient production, especially when top coal winning by means of caving behind the face is applied. A comprehensive modelling of deformations and induced stresses is vital for the selection of optimum production strategy. In this study, numerical modelling and analysis of a longwall panel at Omerler underground coalmine have been carried out by using the software called FLAC3D developed based on the finite difference technique. Firstly, a 3-D numerical model of the M3 panel has been prepared. Secondly, induced stresses formed around the longwall face have been determined as a function of face advance where the face was located at the bottom of thick coal-seam. Results obtained from modelling studies have revealed that the front abutment vertical stress was maximum at 7 metres in front of the face and magnitude of front abutment stress was found to increase up to a distance of 200 metres away from the face start line. As the face was further advanced after 200 m from the face start line, there was not any significant change in the characteristics of front abutment stresses. Results of numerical analysis of the panel were in good agreement with in situ observations.

In the Canadian mining industry, there are at present no comprehensive regulations or standards for valuation of mineral properties. In January 1999, the Mining Standards Task Force of the Toronto Stock Exchange and the Ontario Securities Commission recommended that the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM) establish a committee to review and advise on approaches and methodologies for the valuation of mineral properties. The authors were subsequently appointed Co-chairs of the CIM Special Committee on Valuation of Mineral Properties (CIMVal). A committee of experts from the mining industry, consulting, financial and legal communities was established with the task of reviewing available information, investigating various valuation methodologies and practices, soliciting input from interested parties, and recommending a Canadian code or standards plus guidelines for the valuation of mineral properties. As an initial stage of its work, the CIMVal Committee organized a one day session at the Mining Millennium 2000 Convention in Toronto in March 2000 on valuation of mineral properties. The 10 invited papers have been published by CIM. As a second stage, CIMVal has requested input and comments from all interested parties. The next stage will be to prepare a preliminary draft with a recommended code or standards and guidelines. This will be circulated for further input and comments prior to revision and publication of another draft. The final CIMVal report should be completed in early 2001. A variety of methods are in common usage for the valuation of mineral properties, depending on the stage of development of the property, the data available and the experience of the valuator. For example, the discounted cash flow method is commonly used for properties in production or at the feasibility stage, but is not generally considered appropriate for exploration properties. Market approaches such as comparable transactions are in wide general use, and various cost approaches are used for exploration properties. The option pricing approach has promise for valuation of marginal properties, but is not commonly used.

This paper reviews the role of oxygen potential and the advances that have been made in the application of tonnage oxygen in copper smelting. Brief reference is made to reaction kinetics before attention is turned to the thermodynamic considerations in copper melting to illustrate the importance of oxygen and. oxygen potential in the component parts of the overall smelting process. The chemical potential diagram for the Cu-Fe-S-O-Si02 system is used to elucidate the difference b etween the conventional matte smelting process and the modern continuous processes. A progressive oxidation scale' is constructed to show the common elements which exist, and the matte grades produced, during the smelting of concentrates to blister copper in commercially available copper smelting processes and those under development. The common route in producing blister copper from molten mattes, regardless of process, is illustrated on the Cu-Fe-S equilibrium phase diagram. The essential features of oxygen enrichment, in terms of its effect on combustion conditions (i.e. oxidation of fuel and sulphide minerals) and the heat balance are outlined. The benefits of oxygen enrichment are listed. The influence of tonnage oxygen and its effect on productivity, fuel savings, gas volume and strength in various copper melting processes are examined as a state-of-the-art review. Reference is made to the economics of tonnage oxygen utilization.

This circular describes the activities and publications of the Bureau of Mines, Explosives Research Laboratory4 for the fiscal year 1960 (July 1, 1959 -June 30, 1960). Part 1 describes briefly the principal projects that were active during the report period, and presents some data not scheduled for publication elsewhere in the near future. Certain of the results are only preliminary and should be regarded as tentative, pending the findings of the completed investigation. Publications that appeared during the report period are listed and described briefly in part 2. In general, the research activities reported in these publications antedate fiscal year 1960. The published material relating to activities that are still current is indicated by references in part 1.

Ecstall Mining Limited, a subsidiary of Texas Gulf Sulphur Company, operates the Kidd Creek Mine, a 10000 tons per day base metal producer, near Timmins, Ontario. Two different types of ore are mined and milled: copper-zinc and silver-lead-zinc. At the highly automated Ecstall concentrator the ores are processed by selective flotation in three individual circuits. One of the most important metallurgical tools for process control is a sample system incorporating continuous on-stream X-ray analysis. Recently this system was automated further by the addition of computer control of reagents for two copper-zinc flotation circuits. The computer programs, utilizing optimum seeking methods and smelter contract terms, have increased copper recovery by 1.1 per cent, zinc recovery by 1.4 per cent, and have reduced reagent costs by 16 per cent. Although not expected, copper and zinc concentrate grades were improved slightly as well.

"CP-06 is an NATM cross passage which connects up-line and down-line metro tunnels near Kilpauk Medical College, Chennai. It lies completely in loose silty sand to dense sand with water table almost touching the ground surface after Chennai floods. Pre-grouting was done before excavation to seal the area and to ensure no-loose pockets. The heading was excavated successfully but while benching excavation huge water ingress started seeping out. Sand also permeated along with water which became unstoppable due to cavity formation and caused the up-line tunnel to sink considerably. A large grouting exercise was carried out with different grout materials and techniques both from the ground surface and inside of tunnel to stop the water ingress and stabilize the tunnel. This paper describes the chronology of events that occurred in the tunnel during CP-06 issue. It elaborates all the different grouting techniques involved in the whole process of the tunnel stabilization. It includes a finite element analysis using Rocscience RS2 9.0 software showing the possible cause of sand incursion with water from the CP invert which lead to the tunnel settlement. This paper also describes the after effects and the lesson learnt from the whole incident.INTRODUCTIONConstruction of Metro Rails has become the latest alternative to cope up with the transportation demand of the growing urban cities population. L&T SUCG JV constructed Chennai Rail Metro Phase II Contract UAA-04 which included design and construction of approximately 4 km of route length of underground mass transit railway including 3 underground stations. This package also includes 12 cross passages which are NATM tunnels connecting upline and down-line side of TBM tunnel for safe evacuation of passengers in case of emergency. As per NFPA guidelines, this is a mandatory structure and there should be atleast one cross passage in 244m tunnel length.CP-06 is a cross passage connecting upline and downline tunnel between Pachiyappa College Station and KMC Station, in Chennai Metro. During the construction of CP-06, heavy water seepage of around 450 liters per minute was encountered during second round of benching excavation after full heading was excavated. An inflow of around 12-15 cum of sand and silt was also observed inside the tunnel along with the seepage water, which created piping inside the TBM tunnel causing it to settle continuously with time. A huge effort was made to stop the water ingress along with loose sand which was causing the running tunnel to settle, involving all possible grouting methods and temporary support installation."

The site of the First Quality Tissue plant is located on a previous paper production facility in Lock Haven, Pennsylvania. The new development, which included the construction of a tissue machine building, baled building, converting building, various storage buildings and an electrical switchgear building, required the use of deep foundation systems to transfer loads below compressible fill and alluvial soils. Loading details provided by Jacobs Engineering, the project structural engineer, detailed braced steel frame buildings with typical column loads ranging from 75 to 150 kips and slab live loads of 250 to 300 psf. As an exception to this, however, the tissue machine and stock preparation building, which had a roof height ranging up to 85 feet, had column loads ranging up to 800 kips in addition to high dynamic loads. The First Tissue plant is located in a river valley in the hills of Western Pennsylvania. To evaluate the proposed site conditions and to formulate recommendations for the structure foundations, a geotechnical study was performed by the owner. Approximately 30 borings were advanced to bedrock, with wire-line coring performed in the tissue machine building. The borings disclosed a soil profile comprising of the following:

Rare earth elements (REE) and their compounds are critical ingredients in numerous necessities of modern life including: the permanent magnets used in electric motors, generators, speaker and hard drives; high performance automobile tires; catalysts; phosphors; optical glass; etc. World production of REE in 2014 was about 110,000 t with about 98,000 t/a being “Light” (LREE) and the balance “Heavy” (HREE). Unlike other mined commodities, the majority of the LREE produced in the world is a by-product and that from a single iron ore mine in China. The balance of the LREE production comes from four REE-only mines, two in China, one in Australia and one in the USA (now on Care and Maintenance basis). The LREE operations comprise very unusual flotation processes and complex hydrometallurgical plants. In contrast, most of the HREE come from a multitude of small in-situ leach operations exploiting a single, dispersed deposit in China using hydrometallurgy alone. All of the current REE operations produce an intermediate mixed REE product that must be separated to yield the high purity, individual, REE required by the market. This paper describes the processes being used to produce LREE and HREE intermediate products and the separation plants used to make the high purity REE compounds that are key ingredients in the magnets in earbuds, turbines, and automobiles; catalysts used in the production of gasoline, and so on.

The processing of sweated aluminum electronic scrap was investigated to develop methods for recovering the aluminum and concentrating the other metals, including copper, lead, gold, and silver, into a product that can be separated by known methods. Two molten-salt electrorefining processes were developed and tested. The first process utilized a three-layer refining cell with a BaCI2-NaF-AIF3 electrolyte, which operated at 750° to 850° C. The second process used an all-chloride electrolyte of NaCI-KCI-AICI3 at 750° to 800° C, with separate anode and cathode compartments. High-quality aluminum was recovered that averaged 99.8-percent pure in the three-layer cell and 99.6-percent pure in the compartment cell. Over 94 percent of the aluminum was recovered with cathode current efficiencies of approximately 90 percent in both methods. The copper, lead, tin, silver, gold, and other metals were concentrated threefold in an anode product. Separation of lead and part of the tin by liquation from this product seemed feasible. The anode product was smelted to prepare a 96-percent copper bullion that contained 690 ounces of silver and 65 ounces of gold per ton, with 98 percent recovery of these values.

The objective of the ? 200 million ($280 million) project Parma Railways Station-Urban Transformation was the reconnection of the North and South parts of the town by constructing an 80 m (250 ft) wide sunken artery passing under the four double railway tracks of the station without any impact on train traffic. The site of the project, adjacent to the Parma River, presented water seepage problems at any excavation depth. The use of conventional large diameter bored pile machinery was not allowed by the Railway Authority because equipment dimension and construction phases do not comply with train traffic safety regulations. Foundations for the bypass were thus constructed by minipiles nested into jet-grouted soil using machinery operating within the existing head room and at a safe distance from the tracks. Jet-grouting treatment reached depths of 25 to 28 m (80 to 90 ft) from tracks? grade and embedded minipile-heads were terminated at 2 to 3 m (6.6 to 10 ft) below grade. Load tests on minipiles were pushed to failure. Failure occurred at a 240 t (265 t) load without breakage of the bond between the jet grouted soil and the minipiles. A 0.93 MPa (135 psi) shear resistance ??? between minipile steel casing and the jet grouted soil was measured prior to the failure of the steel casings. Overall measured foundation settlements were well within expected values and were considered insignificant.

In many cases, the use of hydrocyclone control is desirable for the stabilization of separation in the setting of changing feed conditions. Control concepts based on exact mathematical models are not satisfactory due to the complexity of the physical process. In this case, fuzzy control is a suitable solution. The data are primarily derived from an optical sensor that monitors the outside view of the free underflow stream. A throttling valve, serving as an actuator, is installed in the overflow pipe that regulates the volume split of the cyclone. Applications in closed circuit grinding and in separation plants for tunnel driving, fine sand dewatering, and classification of kaolin demonstrate the typical use of this development. Additionally, the technological characteristics of the cyclone may be improved by this control, which is mainly caused by the increased discharge capacity of the un-der flow nozzle. A further advantage is the option to operate at an optimal operation point. In many cases, this point is located at the transition spray/rope discharge. The improved operation characteristics present new options for extensive applications of fuzzy cyclone control.

The phosphate fertilizer industry is at present based mainly on the use of sulfuric acid. This technology results in the generation of large amounts of radioactive gypsum that represents disposal and environmental problems. Also it involves the use of expensive reactors for acidification that necessitates the frequent replacing the damaged agitators. Applying hydrometallurgical techniques such as in-situ, heap, or vat leaching to phosphate processing could solve these problems. In this case, however, nitric acid must be used and dicalcium phosphate (40% P2O5) may be obtained as a final product. It is insoluble in water but soluble in citric acid and is an excellent fertilizer. This technology does not interfere with uranium recovery if desired. In addition it permits the recovery of rare earths which are otherwise lost in the gypsum.

THE history of mining in South Africa differs somewhat from that of other countries in the part taken by the aborigines in the development ?of the mineral deposits. The Spaniards in America, and the fortune-seekers of Australia and New Zealand, found large numbers of natives in these new countries, but the inhabitants did not become willing or efficient workers ill the mines which the white men started. The Kaffirs of South. Africa have not shown the same antipathy to labor, nor do they show any signs of dying out in the presence of the white man's civilization. They are a virile race, and so far the vices of civilization have not killed. them. While it is true that the brain and skill necessary for the exploitation of the mineral resources of this sub-continent-have been supplied by the white race, it is also a fact that most of the rough labor in the development of the mining industry of South Africa has been done by the Kaffirs. The Kaffir tribes differ greatly in their mental and physical capabilities. Compare, for instance, a Zulu of Natal with a Bechuana, or a Xosa of Cape Colony with some of the degenerate tribes of Central or East Africa, and you will find that they have little in common, save that their skin is black and that they do not believe in clothes. As a general rule, the tribe's in the milder, healthier climates are far superior, both in mind and body, to the Kaffirs brought up in the hot malarial sections of Central Africa; and it naturally follows that the black men from the temperate zones of the country, are much finer workmen than the degenerates from less favorable sections: It is universal in South Africa to speak. of the .Kaffirs as " boys." No matter if he is 90 years old, the Kaffir is always a " boy," and in this paper the word " boy " is synonymous with Kaffir.

Based upon the previous work of Norman & Loeb, a method was used to assess the comparative wearing properties of ten different alloys being used, or being considered for use, as mill liners and grinding media at Mount Isa, The materials to be tested were obtained in the form of large diameter balls, and were run, along with the regular ball charge, in a large ball mill operating under normal grinding conditions. At selected intervals, the test balls were removed from the mill, weighed and identified, and their relative wear rates determined.INTRODUCTIONInformation in metallurgical journals, from local iron and steel foundries, and from various metal promotional organizations has suggested that the various alloy compositions available should be examined and assessed for possible use as milllfners and grinding media.Previous attempts at evaluation of recommended materials for these applications elsewhere, have usually involved the purchase of large quantities of grinding balls or complete mill liner sets, requiring running periods of up to two years or more. As well as being both a costly and lengthy procedure, the information obtained may be of little significance, due to changes in milling practice, and ore characteristics during the period of operation.To overcome these difficuities, a method was adopted based on the short time wear rate test recommended by Norman & Loeb (1949) and Norman (1957) in which all the materialsunder consideration are ·subjected·concurrently to the conditions of service.Previous calculations of wear rates have been dependent1. "The El Mochito Mine located in Honduras, Central America, has produced lead, zinc and silver in concentrates since the 1950s. The paper discusses changes made in both lead and zinc circuits to reduce costs while maintaining production during the recent period of low metal prices.The intent of this paper is to show that sometimes thinking “outside the box” is beneficial for progress. Also, in striving for better metallurgical results we should not forget the basics of flotation. Sometimes the latest trends may not be applicable to the ore we are treating and may not meet the operating cost constraints.A major beneficial impact on El Mochito metallurgy was achieved when the overall grind was coarsened, eliminating the significant percentage of slimes. Switching from two parallel twostage grinding circuits to one circuit with three-stage series grinding has resulted in a significant reduction in power and steel consumption. With minor layout/reagent modifications, both lead and zinc circuits gained not only in retention time but as well in producing better grade products.Of course, the challenges are still there; they exist and only with the full support of operational data collection and metallurgical laboratory investigation success can come. That is why, we as professionals, can never stop in trying to make the most of what we have.INTRODUCTIONThe El Mochito Mine is owned by American Pacific Honduras S.A. de C.V. (AMPAC) a subsidiary of Breakwater Resources Ltd. Of Toronto, Canada. The mine is located in western Honduras, approximately 220 kilometers northwest of the capital city, Tegucigalpa and 90 kilometers south of the country’s second largest city, San Pedro Sula. The mine began operating in 1948 and to date has produced more than 19 million tonnes grading 240 g/t Ag, 3.5% Pb and 7.4% Zn. Production in 2005 was 700,190 tonnes grading 87 g/t Ag, 1.85% Pb and 6.61% Zn.Decreasing metal content in the ore followed by the lowest zinc price on the market in the last 15 years (see Figure 1) has reduced the cash flow and endangered to stop the operation."
