An outline is given of the general position of earthsciences information in Australia, the background to development of the Australian Earth Sciences Information System (AESIS) and the role of the Australian Mineral Foundation in developing and co-ordinating the projeot in co-operation with the CSIRO, BMR, National Library of Australia, AGIA, and many companies.Details 'of the system, method and anticipated rate of input (especially of unpublished material at which the System particularly aims), mode of dissemination, and use of the data base are discussed. Information on theAustralian Thesaurus of Earth Sciences and Related Terms and brief details of some 30 earth sciences information collections in Australia is given.

Northparkes was the first mine in Australia to use block cave mining method which relies on gravity and natural rock stresses to fragment and recover the ore. It was also the first hard rock mine to use hydraulic fracturing, in conjunction with CSIRO, to promote caving of E26 Lift 1. The technique was later used on E26 Lift 2 wedge and E48 prior to undercutting.Northparkes production is currently sourced from the E48 Lift 1 block cave mine and E26SLC. The E48 block cave contains economic ore to the north and south of the current cave footprint. To recover this ore the footprint has been extended on the north and south with two extraction drives and one extraction drive, respectively. Modelling of cavability above the additional drives indicated that the cave would not readily propagate to a sufficient height of draw to mobilise the ore and tended to arch over into the existing cave. To address the modelling results and to reduce the risk of the project, rock mass preconditioning was adopted.This fracturing campaign was performed from surface drill holes adjacent the subsidence zone angled to intersect the higher grade and higher elevation ore zones.Optical televiewer surveys, run prior to fracturing, picked intervals and fault zones to be avoided. Holes were resurveyed post-fracturing to detect newly created fractures and as a measure of success of the program.During fracturing operations water and gel fractures were run at varying depths and pumping pressure was logged for each fracture. The mine seismic system monitored significant events and dye in the fluids utilised for tracking water inflow locations during underground inspections.Towards the end of the project, guar fibres from gel were detected within the mill circuit and required treatment to resume optimum processing.CITATION:Webster, S, Snyman, L and Samosir, J, 2016. History The Aldermac mine is situated on the Nipissing Central railway near the ' centre of the township of Boischatel, Quebec, and is about ten miles west of Noranda. Aldermac Mines, Limited, is a subsidiary company of Towagamac Exploration Company. The property was staked by Messrs. Alderson and MacKay and McMartin, during the winter of 1922-23. During October, 1925, a copper discovery was made by K. W. Fritzsche, who was in charge of exploration work at that time, the first trench on this discovery averaging 8 per cent copper over a width of ten feet. This led to the discovery of another body 200 feet to the north, with an average of 3 per cent copper over fifteen feet in width. A magnetic survey was then carried out which led to the location of the large pyrite ore-bodies which have been developed in the past few years. Development work was carried on to a depth of 1,125 feet, and approximately three million tons of massive pyrite ore was indicated. Extensive metallurgical tests were conducted in the laboratories of the Mines Branch of the Department of Mines at Ottawa to determine the proper metallurgical treatment and the economic possibilities of the ore. Owing to the comparatively low copper content, and the uncertainty of the copper market, it was doubtful if the mine could be profitably operated for the production of copper alone. Messrs. Alderson & MacKay, however, realized the possibility of utilizing the large tonnage of pyrite as a substitute for native sulphur, 'which in past years has been imported into .Canada for the manufacture of acid and sulphate pulp in paper mills. They therefore organized the Sulphite Research Corporation with the object of developing an economical process of utilizing the pyrite.

"Quinsam coal mine is located about 25 km west of Campbell River on the east coast of Vancouver Island, British Columbia. Using continuous miners in a fully mechanized retreat room-and-pillar operation, it produces low sulphur, “super compliance” thermal coal for domestic and international markets at a rate of about 2600 t/d. Currently, 65 people work at the site, including some corporate employees.Opened in 1993, the Quinsam mine had a dismal safety record until 1997. Lost time injuries and medical aids were unacceptably high. In 1998, a change in corporate structure brought a change in safety attitudes; a total and unequivocal commitment to safety as job No.1 by corporate and site management. This commitment was clearly spelled out in a new mission statement, circulated to all employees by the new President and CEO, David Slater: “Safety is job No. 1; Production flows from safety; and Think safety at all times.” As well as re-defining workplace safety practices, QCC tightened engineering controls and enforced strict adherence to mine plans.This paper provides a general background to the mining operation, and describes the safety practices that have resulted in an enviable safety record in recent years, reflected by provincial and national recognition."

Brown iron ore resources in Barbour, Butler, Crenshaw, and Pike Counties were investigated in a drilling program and geological study by the Federal Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the Alabama Geological Survey and the University of Alabama. The aggregate footage drilled was 18,010 linear feet. When developed, reserves of 12,664,000 long tons of crude ore were indicated, containing from 26.9 to 29.0 percent iron and 0.2 to 1.6 percent manganese under a maximum overburden of 40 feet. Total inferred crude ore for the four counties was calculated to be 827,700,000 long tons. Beneficiation of samples by simulated log washing and use of a 1/8-inch screen yielded from 46.8 to 51.7 percent iron and 0.2 to 2.6 percent manganese. Screen-test studies indicated no appreciable interlocking between the iron and manganese minerals and the waste particles of materials retained on a 200-mesh screen. Clay was prominent in micron-size slimes. Silica was deleterious in the minus 20-mesh size. While an indicated 2,198,000 dry long tons of usable iron ore can be recovered, sink-and-float tests show that it may be possible for 4,654,000 dry long tons to be recovered by other than log washing. However, applicable commercial processes have not been demonstrated.

"SynopsisSeismically active mines generally experience an increase in seismic hazard due to rock mass instability following blasting. Re-entry protocols commonly include measures to limit the spatial and temporal exposure of personnel to increased seismic hazard induced by blasting. The management of periods of increased seismic hazard requires the development of re-entry protocols for a unique mining environment. Identifying mining conditions that may result in significant seismicity following blasting relies on retrospective analysis, which is often focused on seismicity occurring within a certain period after blasting and within a certain radius of the blast in the broader context of site-specific experience.The analysis of seismicity without considering blasting times and locations allows for the relationship between seismicity and blasting to be investigated without prior assumptions concerning dependency. To achieve independent analysis, seismicity that is clustered in space and time (referred to as a seismic sequence) must be identified by assessment utilizing only seismic parameters. An automated algorithm is implemented that assesses the timing, location, and quantity of seismicity to identify seismic sequences, represented by the time of the first event and mean location of all events in the sequence.The relationship between sequences and blasts is assessed by calculating the distance and time from each sequence to the closest blast in space and time. Establishing an independent classification between sequences and blasting provides insight into the unique cases where seismic sequences are remote and/or delayed with respect to blasts and identifies cases when sequences exhibit a weak relation to blasting. The nature of seismic responses to blasting has direct implications for the management of the increased seismic hazard associated with seismic sequences.The approach presented in this study contributes to the management of seismic hazard by providing empirical support for the relationship between seismic sequences and blasting. These relationships indicate the portions of sequences that can and cannot be practically managed using tactical approaches. Furthermore, the analysis of sequences reveals the nature and evolution of rock mass responses to blasting. These results have implications for the extent of spatial or temporal re-entry restrictions required for the optimal management of time-dependent rock mass response to mining."

The Thirlmere aqueduct was constructed over 110 years ago to provide water from the Lake District (in the north-west of England) to the city of Manchester some 60 miles (100 km) away. The aqueduct remains, to this day, a key piece of infrastructure in the distribution of raw water in the north-west of England. A short section of the aqueduct was identified as being in poor condition during routine inspections by the owner. Subsequent investigations attributed the conduit damage to the movement of unstable ground over the conduit. Bachy Soletanche Ltd was subsequently appointed to carry out the design and construction of the slope stabilisation works and to undertake repairs inside the damaged conduit. The works were undertaken on an existing slope which, in places stands at a gradient of up to 40º to the horizontal. Strict limitations on plant and equipment were imposed by the client (United Utilities) to ensure that slope and conduit loading and associated vibrations were kept to an absolute minimum during construction. An intensive instrumentation system was installed to monitor surface movements, ground movements at depth, conduit movement and strains across existing planes of weaknesses within the conduit. The solution comprised the installation of spaced piles up-slope and down-slope of the conduit. Restrictions were imposed on the minimum stand-off distance between the outside face of the conduit and the piling works so targeted permeation grouting was undertaken to improve the ?connection? between the conduit and the down-slope piles. The presence of existing sub conduit groundwater flows was suspected and the permeation grouting was focused in areas to minimize disruption to the groundwater regime. The paper presents the basis of the design and highlights the combined construction and instrumentation methods adopted to minimise damage to this valuable asset.

This case history describes the engineering design and construction for the Contractor of a 35-ft-deep excavation for an 800-square-foot addition to an existing sewage pump station. The site posed unexpected geotechnical complications that included deep gravelly soil, a history of local construction difficulties, groundwater consisting of heavy salt brine, and the need to underpin the existing pump station. The project took an interesting twist when the Owner issued a change order limiting the dewatering discharge to a fraction of that required to lower the water table. This documents the interesting circumstances of this job and documents the unusual subsurface conditions in the Syracuse, NY Lakefront area.

This paper describes the Contractor’s value engineering design and the construction of the Interstate I-90 highway tunnel sections under the South Station railroad yard in Boston, MA for the Central Artery/Tunnel Project, using tunnel jacking and ground freezing techniques. Three tunnel box sections were constructed and installed, with typical cross-sectional dimensions of 11.6 m x 23.8 m, and respective lengths of 50.9 m, 78.7 m and 115.6 m. A 12-compartment concrete shield was built as part of the front of each multi-sectional tunnel box structure. The jacking systems employed consisted of rear and intermediate jacking stations and up to 87 individual jacks, providing a maximum total thrust capacity of 42,300 t. The tunnel alignments pass through a geologic profile consisting of historic fill, which contains remnants of old waterfront structures, building foundations and a forest of 19th century vintage timber piles, underlain by organic sediments and marine clay. Ground cover over the tunnels is in the range of 1.8–7.6 m. The groundwater table is at depths of 1.5–3 m below surface grade. The paper discusses the techniques developed and equipment used to successfully build and install these tunnel box structures with minimal impact on the commuter and long distance railroad operations directly above the tunnel alignments. Figure 1 shows the track area at the I-90 EB and WB tunnels.

The Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) is the largest international geoscience project in the world, and the state-of-the-art drill ship, the JOIDES Resolution, is permanently at sea. Each year there are six scientific cruises (legs) which each last approximately two months. These legs are designed by geoscientists from the nineteen countries that subscribe to ODP.Australia and Canada presently share ODP membership under the banner of the AUSCAN Consortium. The benefits of Australia's involvement in ODP include internationalisation of Australian geoscience, advanced graduate training, and unique scientific investigations of the ocean floors in the Australasian region. In addition, visits to Australian ports by the ODP drill ship, the JOIDES Resolution, contribute up to $2 million per visit to the local economy. Amongst the many other aspects of ten years of scientific drilling, OOP has significantly contributed to our understanding of hydrothermal processes on the seafloor. To date, three hydrothermal sites have been drilled to date by the OOP, Snakepit (MAR), Middle Valley (Juan de Fuca Ridge) and TAG (MAR). Two more hydrothermal sites are scheduled for 1996.

Thermal, metallographic, and vapor pressure data were obtained to establish the phase diagram for the thorium-zinc system. Four compounds corresponding to the stoichiometric formulas Th2Zn, ThZn2, ThZn4, and Th2Zn17 were observed. The melting points of these compounds under constrained vapor conditions were found to be 1055°, 1105°, 1095°, and 1015°C respectively. Four eutectics exist in this system with the following eutectic temperatures and thorium contents in wt pct: 1040°C, 89 Th; 945°C, 79 Th; 1045°C, 55 Th; and 995°C, 35 Th. The standard free energy, enthalpy, and entropy of formation for the compounds were determined from zinc vapor pressure data. ALTHOUGH the thorium-zinc system has been of technical importance in the commercial production of thorium and more recently of interest to some proposed pyrometallurgical separations processes for reactor fuels or blanket materials no detailed investigation of this system has been made in the past. Some previous work has been reviewed by Hanssen.1 The existence of four compounds, Th2Zn17, ThZn4, ThZn2, and Th2Zn has been established and their crystal structures have been studied by X-ray diffraction techniques.2-4 Smirnov et al.,5 determined the solubility of thorium in zinc and investigated the two-phase region between Th2Zn17 and zinc. They calculated some of the thermodynamic properties for these alloys from emf measurements on the cells Th/ThCl4(fused)/Cl2, C and Th2Zn17(s)+ Zn (l)/ThCl4(fused)/Cl2, C. The possibility of reaction between the anode materials and fused thorium tetrachloride to produce a lower valent thorium salt would have to be resolved in order to evaluate the results obtained. The purpose of the present investigation is to establish the phase diagram for the thorium-zinc system and to determine the standard free energy, enthalpy, and entropy of formation for the compounds formed. MATERIALS AND EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES The metals employed in the preparation of alloys were Bunker Hill slab zinc, 99.99 pct pure and Ames Lalboratory thorium. The major impurities in the thorium in parts per million were oxygen—1250, carbon—350, iron—100, nitrogen-75, and silicon—70. The metals in the form of several small massive pieces, total weight about 30 g, were cleaned with acid, washed with water and acetone, and dried just prior to their use for alloy preparation. Tantalum containers were found to be suitable for all the alloys studied and were used throughout this investigation. The metals were sealed inside of small 1-in.-diam tantalum crucibles by welding on preformed tantalum covers. Economic investigations indicate that bituminous coal can be mined underground in the Uinta region and marketed at a cost competitive with that of other energy sources in the West. A selling price of $3.90 per ton of coal was calculated from a cost analysis of a projected coal mine in the Emery coal- field of Utah. Although mines in some of the coalfields have extremely difficult mining conditions and cannot compete in the energy market at this price level, at least two other coalfields in the Uinta region contain coal reserves that could be mined and sold at a price of approximately $3.90 per ton. Projections by power companies and other coal-consuming industries indicate a strong future market for the large coal reserves in the Uinta region.

Gold mining require high levels of dilution control due the high value of ore. These types of operations employ short benches, which are suitable for ore control, lower displacement and more representative block models. However, shorter benches makes fragmentation by blasting difficult because blast designs tend to be stiff in regards to burden/bench height ratio. This is especially relevant in hard, massive ore bodies where usual drilling diameters lead to poor energy distribution. In regards to control ore loss and dilution, there are different techniques to minimize both, which include: panel blasting, buffer blasting to muck piles and differential loading of areas of the blast bench. All of them should be sequenced with appropriate displacement along the ore/waste contacts. This paper describes extensive engineering approaches to achieve both dilution control while not hurting fragmentation in the very hard, massive ore sections of a mine case study. Ore Tracker microchips are used to correlate performance of these designs at the SAG mill (bottleneck of this specific operation). Another gold mine uses the same technology to detect when and where operational dilution is happening. The system tells where flagging of the different ore bodies has been followed in order to detect which operators pass the excavation limits beyond ore control flagging.

The Belize economy recorded modest growth during 1980; the growth of the gross domestic product (GDP) in real terms was between 1% and 2%. At current prices, the 1980 GDP reached $108 million2. This output was largely attributed to the performance of a few industries, mostly nonminerals. Such performance improved significantly the balance of payments situation by reducing the deficit from $19 million in 1979 to $4 million in 1980. The rate of inflation was an estimated 18% in 1980 and would have been greater if not for a conservative monetary policy and price control on a number of essential items. Expert earnings increased $43 million, or 50%, from the 1979 level. After increasing more than 25% in 1979, imports increased only 6% in 1980 to a level of $141 million owing to the decline in investment and stabilization of petroleum prices. The balance of trade deficit was $9.8 million in 1980, a marked improvement from the 1979 level of $45.1 million. The mineral output for Belize accounted for only a fraction of 1% of the GDP. Such activity was limited to the production of limestone, marl, and sand and gravel, all of which were primarily used in construction of the Northern Highway between Orangewalk and Belize City. Mineral resources are deficient or nonexistent in Belize for the majority of metals and nonmetals, although the Government and others continue to believe that petroleum must exist in Belize. The proximity to Mexican oilfields and the growing finds in the Peters area of Guatemala support this expectation. When stress wave propagates through fractured rock masses, the wave will be slowed and attenuated due to the presence of these fractures. If the amplitude of stress wave is large enough to mobilize nonlinear deformation of these fractures, they will present different effects on one-dimensional P-wave propagation compared with those of linear deformational fractures. The static BB model is adopted to describe the nonlinear deformational behavior. Method of characteristics combined with displacement discontinuity theory is used to build analytical solutions of wave particle velocities and wave stresses. These equations are numerically solved with sufficient accuracy.

Highwall stability is a major consideration in optimising opencast mine geometry. It involves assessing the risk of those slope failures that are large enough to have significant cost, safety and/or operational implications. These risks are then balanced against the value of the resource to arrive at an acceptable slope design. Load-deformation models (commonly referred to as ænumericalÆ models) of slopes provide a powerful tool in this decision-making process since they can be verified well before slope failure occurs. This gives the slope designer increased confidence in reviewing designs during excavation, potentially allowing early revision of pit geometry to either increase or decrease safety margins as appropriate. However, these models are not always adopted as they depend heavily on an appropriate choice of constitutive model and material parameters.   A preliminary load-deformation model of a 170m highwall in Solid Energy North (SEN) OperationsÆ Awaroa 4 opencast coal mine in the Rotowaro Coalfield has been prepared. This uses a strain-dependent constitutive model based on laboratory test results, strength parameters developed by SEN and excavation monitoring data. The laboratory testing has included triaxial compression tests on large-diameter fractured samples to characterise the stress-strain response of the closely-jointed soft rock masses that exist in many parts of the mine. Data from the monitoring of a 25m cut made during excavation of a haul road has been used to refine and verify the constitutive model. The resulting highwall model has predicted highwall crest movements corresponding to the excavation of each bench, for comparison with monitored values. Key model outputs are total horizontal movements of about 0.5m near the highwall crest and shear strains of 0.5-0.7% at the locations of potential bedding-parallel shear planes underlying the highwall. Most of the movement is expected to occur as creep rather than as an immediate response to excavation.

SAG mill liner development draws primarily on practical experience from SAG milling operations supported by computer-based modeling of charge motion in SAG mills and on established good design practice. Liner design needs to respond to the process aspects of mill liner action that are critical to good SAG mill performance, i.e., the impact of shell liners on the grinding action and of grates and pulp lifters on pulp discharge. In recent years, the trend in large SAG mills has been to use wide-spaced shell lifters with large lifter face angles, primarily to reduce packing and ball/liner damage, and to use larger, hence fewer, mill liner parts to reduce downtime at liner change-outs.
