Ongoing development work on ultra-fine grinding for various applications at the Group?s concentrators has been conducted by Anglo Platinum over the last few years. Current potential applications for mainstream grinding and concentrate grinding are the subject of a group-wide research and development programme. The first 10 000-litre 2.6 MW IsaMill was jointly developed by Anglo Platinum, Xstrata Technology and Netszch for installation at the Western Limb Tailings Re-treatment project in Rustenburg, South Africa. The unit was commissioned in late 2003/early 2004, and has operated in an intermediate concentrate regrind application successfully since. This paper describes the operational performance to date, as compared with the original duty specifications and objectives. The first mainstream M10 000 IsaMill with a 3 MW drive will be operational in November 2006 at the Potgietersrus Platinum (PPL)?Platreef? Sandsloot Concentrator in South Africa?s Limpopo Province. The critical distance determination test through direct recording for the mine in Phase 03 was carried out in January 2024, and in it the vibration and pressure models were obtained for the Sedimentary breccia unit. The method of obtaining the records is based on the capture of individual pressure waves generated by distant loads, sequenced in periods of 600 ms for easy identification. The test set up corresponds to a variation of that used to obtain the vibration model, and uses 08 wells for loads and 04 for instrumentation. The results apply a safety factor of 1.2 and 1.5, being 16,000 PSI and 13,250 PSI respectively. The values are valid for any distance greater than 5.5 m, this being the minimum established between wells for loads according to the configuration defined in the field, also considering that in 5.0 m of instrumentation the section of the drill hole with the sensor called S1 collapsed. The results of the analysis of the test, generated with Heavy Anfo 82 explosive, with a final density of 1.15 g/cc, are presented. The results of the modeling and generation of the graphs and tables presented show behavior in line with the concept of scaled distance. It is important to consider that in water conditions there is a high impact by the condition, which causes the records to be higher than those expected in dry conditions and present less variability. It is for the above reason that the row corresponding to distance with safety factor 1.5 is declared valid. The results are only valid for the rock analyzed, whose medium is homogeneous and constant in terms of lithological composition and that present similar resistance characteristics, fracture frequency and water table levels. As future steps, the objective is to quantify the increase in pressure generated between wells by analyzing time and sequence factors. This analysis aims to explain the occurrence of dynamic pressure events in areas where critical safety distances are observed.

Introduction The Hollinger cyanidation mill commenced operating in June, 1912, and 49,779,978 tons of solids had been discarded by the end of 1950. The present tailing disposal plant has been in operation since 1924 and holds 39,762,250 tons. The tailing disposal plant is on the property of Kayorum Gold Mines, Limited, about a mile and a quarter south of the mill. The area available for tailing covers 640 acres and is roughly l ¼ miles long by ¾ mile wide. Tailing was first deposited on the McKay veteran claims, l mile long by 1/2 mile wide, which were later included in the Kayorum property. This site sloped from northeast to southwest, the slope amounting to 106 feet between the northeast corner and the low land to the southwest. The low land was wet and a considerable area was covered with muskeg up to 17 feet deep. It was drained by a brook running across the property in a southwesterly direction. Later, when more ground was needed, the low-lying mining claims adjacent to the south and west boundaries were acquired to allow for the extension of the plant. This entailed some extra difficulties and expense that would not have been encountered had the whole of the present site been acquired with the original purchase. At the present time, the top of the tailing deposit stands at two elevations, but eventually the tailing deposited on the extension to the original plant will be raised to the same height as the older deposit. Previous to 1924, all of the tailing was deposited on Low land and in lakes near the mil1. Between 1924 and 1926 an increasing tonnage was sent to the McKay claims until, in 1926, all of it was being sent there. In 1936, the area of the deposit was extended and shortly afterwards all of the tailing was deposited on the new site.

"Sampling is an important step for ore body evaluation and daily plant material balances. The Gy’s equation is regularly used to assess the size of the samples to be collected and to estimate the reproducibility of the collected samples. The equation works well for iron and base metal ores but seems to produce pessimistic estimates of the gold content reproducibility for gold ores. A model is proposed to simulate the division of samples using a standard splitter and discrepancies are observed between the Gy’s equation predictions and simulated samples reproducibility for crushed gold ore. Results of the simulation show that sampling a pile of ore crushed to -2 mm should lead to more reproducible gold content than it is observed in practice and predicted by the Gy’s equation.INTRODUCTION With current gold prices above $1400 per troy ounce operators seek for new economical ore bodies. The metallurgical evaluation of an ore body is one of the numerous steps required to justify the investment for the development of a gold mine. Metallurgical testing requires to sample the ore body and to prepare the ore sample for the grinding and separation tests. The preparation implies crushing the ore usually to less than 2mm and its division into batches of a given weight for subsequent processing. For gold ore testing a batch of crushed ore is ground in a laboratory mill and leached using cyanide. Gold recovered in the solution is used as an indicator of the ore processing amenability. One difficulty associated with ore testing is due to the reproducibility of gold content measurements of the feed sample. According to the Gy’s equation (Gy, 1979; Morisson, 2009) the division of a 20 kg batch of -2 mm ore containing 5 g/t of gold into batches of 1 kg may lead to batches containing 5 ± 5 g/t of gold. For this reason the gold content of a feed sample is usually back calculated from the assays of the solution and solids residues of the leaching process. However, these two assays may contain measurement errors that can propagate through the calculation of the gold recovery. The use of the feed assays as a redundant information could add robustness in the evaluation of ore amenability to processing. This paper discusses the problem of sampling reproducibility for a gold ore. The analysis is carried out with reference to the Gy’s equation for the sampling of particular materials."

For many years, Newmont has focused on improving its operations. After the merger between Newmont and Santa Fe Pacific Gold, Newmont created synergies of more than $50 million a year in Nevada. This was done primarily through optimal ore movements and consolidation of various functions. During the current period of low gold and copper prices, Newmont has refocused its efforts on efficient operations worldwide. At its mine facilities in Nevada, Newmont has used a combination of several strategies to decrease the costs of operations and to increase profitability. These include computer technology, optimal use of infrastructures, procurement strategies, functional consolidation, enhanced mine planning and several available metallurgical processing options.

Os aços inoxidáveis ABNT da série 300 são ligas austeníticas Fe-C(< 0,08%) - Cr(18 a 20%) - Ni(8 a 10%) são muito aplicados, pois apresentam alta estampabilidade, alta soldabilidade, boa resistência à corrosão uniforme em vários meios corrosivos, no entanto, sofrem corrosão localizada (pites, corrosão sob tensão, fresta e corrosão intergranular). Os aços inoxidáveis da família UNS S32304, têm 23%Cr e 4%Ni. Por terem teor de carbono inferior a 300ppm (0,03% em massa) são resistentes à corrosão intergranular, sofrem pites e corrosão sob tensão (CST). Devido ao alto teor de cromo, o aço UNS 32304 apresenta boa resistência à corrosão uniforme, sendo que na corrosão por pites o mesmo apresenta um comportamento melhor que os aços ABNT 304 (sem Mo) e ABNT 316 (com Mo), de acordo com o Número Equivalente de Resistência ao Pite (PREN). O PREN dos aços UNS 322304 é 26, e para os aços ABNT 304 e 316 são 18 e 25, respectivamente. Este trabalho caracterizou os diferentes aços inoxidáveis química, metalográfica e eletroquimicamente em meios contendo íons cloretos. A partir de ensaios de caracterização eletroquímica, por polarização potenciodinâmica, verificou-se que o aço ABNT 304 apresentou potencial de pite inferior aos aços ABNT 316 e o UNS 32304, em soluções aquosas contendo 3,5% (massa) de NaCl. Verificou-se que estes aços sofreram CST empregando-se ensaios de deformação (corpo de prova em U) e carga constante (corpo de prova de tração liso) nos eletrodos em soluções aquosas contendo 42% (massa) de MgCl2 na temperatura de aproximadamente 143°C. Salienta-se que o comportamento em CST do aço ABNT 304 foi inferior aos demais. As amostras ensaiadas foram caracterizadas fratograficamente (macro e microfratograficamente - empregando-se microscopia eletrônica de varredura). Os corpos de prova que sofreram CST apresentaram facetas de clivagem e “marcas de rios”, características da fratura frágil.

Recent Bureau of Mines research in earth grounding safety is documented in three separate papers. First, guidelines for the design of a 5- ohm borehole ground are presented. Next, an inexpensive practical means to construct a low-resistance bed in high-resistivity soil is described. Finally, a procedure that employs a commercial resistivity meter to measure shock potentials around grounded objects is explained step-by-step. These papers complement the material presented at an earlier technology transfer seminar and published as IC 8767.

In some underground hard-rock mines, squeezing compressive ground conditions are influenced by the presence of rock foliation and high stress. In these cases, the orientation of the foliation with respect to the drift direction has a considerable impact on the magnitude of the resulting deformation. Irrespective of the reinforcement and support strategy, keeping drives developed sub-parallel to the rock foliation operational is difficult, and often requires excessive rehabilitation during the lifetime of the excavation. This study uses field observations and convergence measurements at the LaRonde and Lapa mines of Agnico Eagle Mines Ltd to provide guidelines of the anticipated squeezing levels at these operations.

This will continue to be so in the foreseeable future as the technology is most efficient, both process and economy-wise. However, as the world is moving into the next millennium, a critical look is being given to the process primarily because of its non-ecofriendliness (as a result of extensive use of metallurgical coal/coke requiring elaborate pollution control facilities) and huge investment involved for supporting facilities like extensive raw material preparation and handling, agglomeration, adoption of sophisticated instrumentation and control system, etc.

What is special about being a female mine manager? We do not believe that the challenge is greater for women in managing a mine compared to managerial positions in other male-dominated businesses. The challenge lies in the fact that it is a male-dominated business. Being a leader belonging to a minority creates a situation where competence not only lies in having technical knowledge or general leadership characteristics, but also in acquiring an understanding of the male norm and being able to behave and communicate effectively in the organisation.In order to move towards a better gender balance at senior levels it is important to set measurable objectives on desirable proportions between women and men at management levels within the company. Focus and action are required to achieve this goal. At LKAB, the current target is to reach 25 per cent women in the total workforce by 2020. To date, LKAB has reached 19.4 per cent women in the total workforce, and the number of women in management positions is 19.9 per cent.It is of vital importance to create a non-discriminating working environment to achieve equal opportunities at the workplace, to be able to use the whole workforce as a resource for recruitment of professionals and managers, thereby improving decision-making, productivity, efficiency and profitability.Women as mine managers is not a utopia, but rather an effect of long-term investments in actions that result in equal opportunities for all employees.CITATION:Quinteiro, M and Sundqvist, Å, 2016. IT has been observed by Grange and Garvey' that the homogenization of boron-treated steels could lead to complete elimination of the hardenability effect caused by boron. The experimental conditions leading to this conclusion involved the heating of steel specimens with and without boron at 2350°F for 24 hr. To prevent oxidation and decarburization, the specimens were encapsulated under vacuum in silica tubes. This observation of permanent deterioration of boron effect was noted in both a 0.63 pct plain carbon steel and a 0.25 pct C low alloy steel, both of which had been treated with ferroboron and homogenized at 2350°F for 24 hr. In another series of boron-treated steels which had been homogenized for shorter times, the effect was to reduce, but not completely eliminate, the boron effect. Under these circumstances, it was presumed that longer heating times would cause permanent deterioration of the boron effect in this series of steels also. Since the characteristic grain boundary constituent could not be formed in any of these steels after homogenization, it was concluded that possibly boron was being converted into an ineffective form through chemical combination resulting from prolonged heating at high temperatures. Assuming the validity of this observation, a series of experiments to establish the relationship between temperature of homogenization and kinetics of deterioration was contemplated. Initially an attempt was made to reproduce the results just described. For this purpose commercial lots of AISI 8640 and AISI 86B40 steels were used. The analyses of these steels appear in Table I. Hardenability evaluation was on the basis of the hardness of normalized sections. Grange and Garvey' pointed out that these steels are air hardening to some extent and such a technique can be used. For these tests the specimens were held for 20 min in a salt bath at 1600°F and then cooled in still air. Several evacuated silica capsules containing pairs of the test steels were made up and heated for 24 hr at 2350°F. A number of failures occurred among these capsules, but evaluation of the specimens successfully treated indicated a complete deterioration of the boron effect. However, examination of the surface of the treated specimens showed that some reaction, probably with the silica tube, had taken place, since none of the specimens was bright. One further test was made at 2350°F for 12 hr, using a pair of specimens wrapped in tantalum foil prior to encapsulation. These specimens appeared bright after treatment, and their hardenability evaluation showed that no deterioration had taken place. Since these steels are extremely sensitive to de-boronization at high temperatures and particularly at long times of holding, the experimental observations raised some doubt as to the real occurrence of the permanent deterioration effect. To resolve this question an experiment was undertaken in which the high temperature portion of the treatment was completed in vacuum. For this purpose a molybdenum wound resistance furnace capable of maintaining good vacuum was used. All the pertinent accessories to this furnace were machined from molybdenum stock in order to withstand the high temperature involved in the experiment. With this equipment a temperature of 2400 °F was obtained and held under a pressure of 5x10-" mm Hg for 24 hr. A specimen of each of the two test steels was suspended in the furnace and both were heated simultaneously. Temperature was measured with a standardized Pt—Pt-13 pct Rh thermocouple, whose millivoltage at 2400°F was extrapolated from the standardization equation, good up to 2200°F. The complete evaluation of these specimens is shown in Table 11. The hardness values attained by each steel after normalizing, both before and after the prolonged high temperature treatment, remain the same. A microscopic study of the decomposition products present in the microstructures of specimens at various points in the heat treatment correlated with the hardness values observed. It seems that no permanent loss of boron hardenability effect occurs, at least in these Grainal-treated steels, when deboronization is circumvented. My selection of the Australian coal industry as the theme of this Presidential Address arose from the fact that it is one of our most important mineral industries. The industry is presently prospering.M.ore coal, mostly of better quality (except for certarn power-house types), is being produced more cheaply in terms of real money than at any time in the past, and exports overseas are currently at a highlevel.In. spite of this, concern has been expressed in certam quarters about the future of some phases of the industry; for example, there has been some public comment on the selling price of our coking coal to Japan, the possible over-export of our coking coals from New South Wales, the introduction of foreign capital to develop large-scale mining ventures in Queensland, and the proposed export of substantial quantities of coking coal from the same State.Furthermore, proposals for the introduction of atomic power plants into several States well endowed with reserves of coal have given rise to comment, and recently the Department of National Development(1968) warned that insufficient attention is being paid to "orderly development and careful husbanding of the nation's coal.To reach a balanced judgment on whether these views are well founded it is essential to make a broad survey of the present position of the coal industry in the Australian economy. I therefore propose to deal briefly with several aspects, and to comment, in particular, on the important subjects of exploration and research in progress at present on Australian coals.Detailed descriptions of the Australian coalfields are to be found in existing technical publications (e.g.. Andrew, 1965; McLeod, 1965) and the data on coal reserves have been progressively revised as more accurate information has become available. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), in partnership with the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), is conducting research to test, evaluate, improve or modify coal mine fire-fighting strategies and methodologies through large-scale tests. Since wood is the second most abundant fuel available during a coal mine fire, it was decided that series of large-scale wood crib fire tests were needed to measure the products of combustion and to observe the capability of commonly available direct application fire suppression equipment, namely, fire extinguishers, water and gas-enhanced foam. This paper discusses the wood crib fire tests, provides insight into the products of combustion and describes observations made during the application of the fire suppression agents.

"In recent years the recovery of copper from low grade oxide ores has received widespread attention. The cost of treating such ores using conventional technology, such as milling and flotation, is frequently prohibitively high and copper recovery is generally low. The introduction of heap leaching, solvent extraction (SX) and electrowinning (EW) has resulted in high recoveries, good copper cathode quality and low production costs. This technology has now been successfully applied on a worldwide basis.This paper reviews the various process and design options and gives approximate capital and operating costs for a 1.0% copper ore.INTRODUCTIONAs a result of the low copper prices that prevailed for much of the last two decades, aggressive attempts were made by the industry to cut operating costs. Under such circumstances heap leaching, solvent extraction and electrowinning, to recover low cost copper from oxide ores, has received particular attention and ultimately widespread acceptance.Low grade copper ore (typically containing less than 1.0% Cu), which could not be economically treated by other methods, is placed on heaps and leached with dilute solutions of sulphuric acid. The copper rich, pregnant solution, drains from the heap into a collecting pond and is pumped to a solvent extraction plant where it is purified and upgraded. The resulting solution, termed the pregnant electrolyte, passes to the electrowinning section where the copper is recovered as high grade cathodes and sulphuric acid is regenerated, (Figure 1).This paper specifically describes the processing of copper oxides. Other copper minerals such as chalcocite and chrysocolla are also leached by dilute solutions of sulphuric acid. In practice the oxide minerals are frequently associated to varying degrees with less easily leached sulphides, such as chalcopyrite. In some cases, once the oxidized capping of the ore body is removed, the oxides are totally replaced by more refractory sulphides. Under these circumstances the leaching recovery is significantly reduced. However the principles described here for solvent extraction and electrowinning are also applicable to solutions received from heaps containing sulphide minerals, which are leached more slowly and involve bacterially induced reactions."

Ocean mining has a number of problems which are critical to its development: ? Political hurdles on national and international stages ? The worldwide economic situation, with the possibliity of a recession ? Financial difficulties in funding further work ? Technical problems for the development of ocean mining and transport subsystems ? Demands for technology transfer This paper touches the last two points and provides some thoughts for discussion and creative objectification. The many technical problems of ocean mining will be identified and some proposed solutions will be investigated relative to the state-of-the-art technology of ocean mining and nodule transport. An outlook into the future attempts identification of the steps necessary to eventually develop components for workable systems that are not only technically but also economically feasible.

Characterization of ore and waste-rock material using automated quantitative micro-mineralogical techniques (e.g., QEMSCAN® and MLA) has the potential to complement traditional acid-base accounting and humidity cell techniques when predicting acid generation and metal release. These characterization techniques, which most commonly are used for metallurgical, mineral-processing, and geometallurgical applications, can be broadly applied throughout the mine-life cycle to include numerous environmental applications. Critical insights into mineral liberation, mineral associations, particle size, particle texture, and mineralogical residence phase(s) of environmentally important elements can be used to anticipate potential environmental challenges. Resources spent on initial characterization result in lower uncertainties of potential environmental impacts and possible cost savings associated with remediation and closure. Examples illustrate mineralogical and textural characterization of fluvial tailings material from the upper Arkansas River in Colorado.

Geochemical conditions within a leaching operation are heterogeneous. This variability arises mainly from hydrological controls imparted by physical characteristics of the ore and by heterogeneous metallurgical properties at the rock-fragment and industrial heap scale. The resulting chemical conditions are responsible for stratified mineral recovery, non-uniform extraction and prolonged leach cycles. This paper presents field data from a sulfide-leaching operation which clearly demonstrate the impact of chemical heterogeneity on metal recovery and the potential use of modern measuring techniques to facilitate operational monitoring and decision making for optimization of leaching operations.

"A fire design innovation of the concrete lining of the Ohio River Bridges East End Crossing Tunnel has been developed. As a result from a fire suppression and tunnel ventilation system, the project design Heat Release Rate (HRR) was able to be constrained from 300 MW to about 50 MW. With this reduced HRR, concrete lining without passive fire protection may be acceptable, if the tunnel concrete lining will not result in explosive spalling during the designed fire event. Concrete explosive spalling test was proposed to verify this assumption. Since no standard concrete fire explosive spalling testing procedure exists, a project specific testing procedure was developed and fire tests conducted. From fire test results, it is concluded that the proposed tunnel concrete lining, in conjunction with the proposed fire suppressing and ventilation system, will not experience explosive spalling and does not require a passive fire protection system. INTRODUCTION The Ohio River Bridge East End Crossing Tunnel is part of a Public Private Partnership project, which connects transportation network between Louisville, Kentucky and southern Indiana. Located in Louisville, Kentucky, the twin-tube highway tunnel provides northbound and southbound lanes of the Kentucky approach to a new bridge across the Ohio River. Tunnel lengths are approximately 1,675-ft and 1,685 for the northbound tube and the southbound tube, respectively. Connected by two cross-passages, both tubes have a roadway width of 40-ft, for 3-lane traffic, and a vertical clearance of 26.5-ft.The Tunnel was constructed by drill and blast method with shotcrete and rock dowels as initial ground supports. The final tunnel lining consists of 16 inches cast-in-place concrete lining and 20 inches invert slab, with a waterproofing system around the tunnel perimeter. Two (2) tunnel side drains and one (1) invert drain were provided for each tube. This paper describes the rational in assessing fire design requirements of the tunnel final concrete lining, to answer the question whether a passive fire protection system is needed or not."

The proposed Second Avenue Subway is a new two-track subway line running from 125th Street and Park Avenue at the north, east along 125th Street to Second Avenue and south along Second Avenue to the Financial District in lower Manhattan, NY with 16 new stations and 13.6 km (8.5 miles) of track. The project has been broken into four construction phases. The initial Phase 1 operating segment includes three new stations (96th, 86th and 72nd Street stations) with a connection to the existing Broadway line at the 63rd Street Station at Lexington Avenue. Rehabilitation of the 63rd Street Station is also included in the scope of Phase 1. Subsequent phases extend service north and west to 125th Street (Phase 2), south to Houston Street (Phase 3) and finally to Hanover Square (Phase 4). The DMJM Harris/Arup Joint Venture (DHAJV) prepared the Contract Documents MTA for Phase 1. Parsons Brinckerhoff is providing the MTA with construction inspection services for Contract C-26002. In April 2007, NYCT awarded first Phase 1 for $337 million to S3 Tunnel Constructors, a tri-venture comprised of Skanska USA Civil, Schiavone and Shea. Contract C26002 is for the construction of the tunnel boring ma-chine (TBM) launch box and the mining of the TBM tunnels from 92nd Street to 63rd Street. The major part of the contract is to construct a shaft, commonly referred to as the launch box, from East 92nd Street to East 95th Street having dimensions of 244-m- (800-ft-) long by 18.9-m- (62-ft-) wide and a depth of 19.8 m (65 ft), including more than 91,000 m3 (119,000 cu yd) of soil and rock contained within its walls. The launch box will ultimately become the southern half of the 96th Street Station. The focus here is geological conditions at the launch box and existing structures along the launch box. These geologic conditions and existing structures had a major influence on the selection and design of the support of excavation system (SOE), the SOE bracing system, construction staging, the ground movements, dewatering and other challenges of constructing the launch box (Fig. 1).
