The socio economic risks of mining in South Africa have been emerging for some time now, and have been brought into sharp relief by recent events in the platinum sector. The slow pace of social upliftment in the country has lead to widespread social unrest with consequent calls for different forms of resource nationalism. Fundamentally, the key stakeholders are not fully aligned, and are not engaging productively. This poses significant above-the-ground risk to mining companies. Measuring social impact, deploying inclusive solutions and engaging effectively with stakeholders are three ways in which mining companies can mitigate this risk. Uranium exploration was commenced in 1973 and carried out at a regional scale over a wide area of the northern part of the Camarvon Basin of Western Australia by Minatome Australia Pty Limited and their joint-venture partners. As a result, pervasive uranium mineralization has been found in the Cretaceous sandstones near Manyingee Hills in the Onslow Region, which were probably deposited in a near-shore, fluvia deltaic palaeo-environment.Mineralization is generally found in poorly sorted argillaceous sandstones and siltstones near redox fronts formed by oxidizing waters circulating in reduced sediments. The principal minerals found in the two Manyingee deposits delineated so far are coffinite, uraninite with associated pyrite in the reduced zones, and phosphuranylite, siderite and limonite in the oxidized zones. The presence of dissolved uranium in the superficial aquifers, of secondary uranium minerals as coatings on granitic rocks, and of recent uranium-bearing calcrete sediments, suggest that the whole Cretaceous-Precambrian system has been subjected to the formation ofroll-front type uranium deposits since the Cretaceous. Continuing exploration is locating additional uranium occurrences. The deposits outlined so far are being evaluated for their amenability to in situ leaching tests planned for 1982-1983.

As the first barrier to prevent accidents caused by explosions in underground coal mines, the integrity and stability of mine seals have great effects on mine workers’ lives and underground production safety. In this paper, the mechanical responding performance of typical mine seals under the impact load are studied by using numerical simulation method. By such simulation studies, the safety of different seals subjected to the explosion load is evaluated. Seals’stability are also investigated under effects caused by various influence factors including thickness of mine seal, cutting depth into surrounding rocks, rock type, and the roof-tofloor convergence under given the explosion load. The research results can provide theoretical basis and reasonable improvements for mine seal’s construction practices for improving its anti-explosion performance.

"In the past decade, there have been many developments in processing of nickel/copper sulfide ores. Improved pentlandite/pyrrhotite flotation selectivity with the use of new reagents, fine regrinding and Redox measurement (control) has led to increased pyrrhotite rejection and thus higher concentrate grades. Flash flotation has increased overall nickel and associated precious group metal recoveries. Recovery of both fine and coarse particles has been improved through an understanding of flotation cell hydrodynamics. The separation of copper from nickel in such ores has seen a similar level of development. From the late 80s to very recently, the use of flotation columns, the use of pyrrhotite depressing reagents and the improved understanding of the complex mineralogy of chalcopyrite, pentlandite and pyrrhotite have considerably increased copper / nickel separation efficiency. Copper concentrate with more than 30% copper and less than 0.5% nickel grade is now obtainable at 80-85% copper recovery from mill feed compared to 70-75% copper recovery with 30% copper and 1% nickel grade only a few years ago. Improved copper / nickel separation in milling operations has the potential to substantially improve the processing of the resulting concentrates and thus the overall return from the extraction of nickel and copper from sulfide ores.INTRODUCTIONNickel metal by itself or in alloys with other metals and materials makes a significant contribution to modern society. The relatively high price that nickel commands compared to other base metals is a reflection of the fact that, although abundant in the universe, nickel is sparingly distributed in the earth’s crust. There are two types of nickel deposits that are currently being exploited: complex sulfide ores and lateritic oxide ores. Lateritic contain no copper but in sulfide deposits, nickel– bearing minerals, principally pentlandite (Pn, [Ni,Fe]8S9), some millerite (NiS) and violarite ([Ni,Fe]S) are often found in association with copper-bearing minerals, mainly chalcopyrite (Cp, CuFeS2) and cubanite (CuFe2S3). The copper content of such ores can vary considerably from as high as 5-8% (in some Sudbury basin ores) to as low as 0.1% (in ores mined by Western Mining at Mount Keith, Western Australia and by Inco in Thompson, Manitoba). The valuable minerals Pn and Cp are almost invariably found associated with pyrrhotite (Po, Fe7S8) which along with nonsulphide rock has to be rejected to tails in the primary milling stage. The bulk concentrate from the primary stage is then treated to depress Pn and float Cp. A complete Cu/Ni separation at the mill would be highly desirable but this is not possible because of locking between a small fraction of the valuable minerals. As a result, Cu/Ni separation has to be carried out both during milling and during refining of the matte following smelting. At Inco, Jinchuan and in Norilsk, a chalcocite / heazlewoodite separation is made by flotation following slow cooling of the matte. In the present Sudbury Inco operations, Cu/Ni separation has not been conducted at the mill since 1991 and all Cu/Ni separation takes place at the matte processing plant. Because of the rising ratio of Cu to Ni in the ore, this strategy is under review and this paper describes some recent studies of circuits in preparation for possible installation of a copper / nickel separation circuit at Inco’s Clarabelle Mill in the Sudbury area."

This is the final report on Grant No. G0144067. The report presents the results of a number of laboratory studies carried cut in several different ways to determine the effectiveness of foam for blocking the flow of gas in coal. The effectiveness; (of foam for retarding or blocking the flow gas in various porous media has been observed by many investigators1-4 but we are not aware of similar detailed studies in coal. Because of the diversity of our experiments, the key findings and general conclusions are presented very briefly in Section II. As a convenience to the reader a complete table of cements is included to enable the reader to find those experiments and studies of greatest interest.

With some notable exceptions, marine placers located just below, or just above, present sea level, are responsible for much of today's production of detrital ilmenite, rutile, zircon, and other minerals of value. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the paleogeographic and paleo-oceanographic factors which may have determined the location of presently submerged marine placers. These factors include changes in sea level, burial by recent marine sediments, stream capture and other changes in drainage patterns, and recent changes in climate. Selected geologic situations in the Yellow Sea off the coast of Korea, in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Portugal, in the Bering Sea off the coast of Alaska, and in the Arabian Sea off the coast of India, will be used to illustrate the author's point of view.

In an effort to improve efficiencies and reduce costs, AngloGold has embarked on a process to develop and deliver consistent, high quality, tailings based support or construction products to stopes and tunnels on request. A three-phase approach of product conceptualisation, design and delivery has been adopted. To date a substantial amount of laboratory development has taken place with promising results, indicating that the project aims are achievable. Dans un effort pour améliorer le rendement et réduire les coûts, AngloGold s’est embarqué dans une opération qui vise à développer et fournir aux chantiers d’extraction et tunnels, sur demande, des produits de construction ou de support basés sur rejets qui sont réguliers et de haute qualité. A potentiometric model study has been made of the effect of vertical fractures existing in the matrix of the reservoir on the flooding or cycling performance. Fractures can have unusual flow characteristics. Fluid entering one side of a fracture can emerge on either the same or opposite side of the fracture, depending on the particular streamline. Fracture orientation has a great influence on the sweep efficiency. However, sustained fluid injection may still permit large areas to be swept. INTRODUCTION One can find considerable information available in the literature on the effect of fractures originating at the wellbore on sweep efficiencies of water-flooding or gas cycling programs.1-5 However, there arc few, if any, quantitative data reported in the literature on the effect of vertical or horizontal fractures existing out in the reservoir matrix on secondary recovery performance. Several papers have been presented on the effect of vertical and horizontal fractures on the productivity or conductivity of waterflood and gas injection patterns, but in all cases the fractures initiated at the well and simulated commercial fractures.6,7 It is believed that natural fractures may exist out in the reservoir matrix and would effect the displacement performance. The purpose of this report was to study the effect of a few isolated vertical fractures existing out in the reservoir matrix on the performance of waterflood or gas injection patterns. DESCRIPTION AND EQUIPMENT Since the potentiometric model was described by Lee8 it has been widely used to study numerous types of fluid displacement problems. The potentio- metric model can be used for fluid displacement studies when the following assumptions are valid: (a) steady-state conditions exist; (b) the mobilicy ratio is one; and (c) the capillary and gravitational effects can be neglected. Five-spot and direct line drive square patterns were studied using a copper strip of the desired length and orientation to simulate a vertical fracture in the reservoir matrix. The 20 x 20-in. model was considered to represent only one element of an infinite array of similar patterns. DISCUSSION AND RESULTS FIVE-SPOT PATTERN — ONE FRACTURE BETWEEN INJECTION AND PRODUCING WELLS Fig. 1 shows a quadrant of a five-spot pattem with the vertical fracture existing out in the matrix along a line connecting the injection and producing wells. Length of the fracture was equal to 35.4 per cent of the distance between injection and producing wells. In this particular pattern it is noted that fluid breaks through from the injection well to the producing well when the dimensionless time is equivalent to 26.9. In January 1998 Sydney Water Corporation formed an Alliance with construction contractor Transfield, and engineering consultants Connell Wagner and Montgomery Watson, to design and construct the Northside Storage Tunnel. The project is part of WaterPlan 21, Sydney WaterÆs strategy for cleaning up the harbours, bays, rivers and beaches within its business area. WaterPlan 21 is an integral part of the NSW GovernmentÆs $3.1 billion Waterways Package which establishes targets and initiatives for sustainable wastewater management within NSW. The project is being delivered under an Alliance Agreement, which has a number of non-traditional features in terms of partnering, management principles and design and construct. Construction began in mid-1998 and is on target to meet the completion deadline for the Sydney 2000 Olympics.

The converting of high-grade nickel matte for production of low-sulphur matte or nickel metal is a process which has eluded metallurgists in the past because of the limitations of conventional converting furnaces. The high temperatures required and the refractory nature of nickel oxide has prevented practical success in a process which has been known to be theoretically feasible for a long time. The Ausmelt top submerged lancing system is capable of operating under close control of the smelting conditions. High temperatures and both rapid oxidation and rapid reduction can be achieved. These features have provided the basis for successful pilot plant trials of the desulphurisation of high-grade matte from the Kalgoorlie Nickel Smelter. Sulphur level in product was lowered from 20 to 25% to as low as 0.2%, with iron levels in matte in the range of 1.0 to 3.5%. The theoretical background of matte desulphurisation is surveyed and the pilot plant operations described. The implications of the results in relation to commercial plants and possible refinery operations are summarised.

Brown iron ore resources in Barbour, Butler, Crenshaw, and Pike Counties were investigated in a drilling program and geological study by the Federal Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the Alabama Geological Survey and the University of Alabama. The aggregate footage drilled was 18,010 linear feet. When developed, reserves of 12,664,000 long tons of crude ore were indicated, containing from 26.9 to 29.0 percent iron and 0.2 to 1.6 percent manganese under a maximum overburden of 40 feet. Total inferred crude ore for the four counties was calculated to be 827,700,000 long tons. Beneficiation of samples by simulated log washing and use of a 118-inch screen yielded from 46.8 to 51.7 percent iron and 0.2 to 2.6 percent manganese. Screen-test studies indicated no appreciable interlocking between the iron and manganese minerals and the waste particles of materials retained on a 200-mesh screen. Clay was prominent in micron-size slimes. Silica was deleterious in the minus 20-mesh size. While an indicated 2,198,000 dry long tons of usable iron ore can be recovered, sink-and-float tests show that it may be possible for 4,654,000 dry long tons to be recovered by other than log washing. However, applicable commercial processes have not been demonstrated.

An original concept of JRC-diagram that can evaluate JRC and its size-effect by using a fractal model was proposed. In order to confirm the applicability of the JRC-diagram, first, JRC of the tensile fracture surfaces of a granite and a sandstone were evaluated by both the JRC-diagram and Barton's JRC-profiles, and then, it was compared with the JRC inversely calculated from the peak shear strength that is obtained from the shear test for each fracture using Barton's empirical equation. As a result, JRC evaluated by the JRC-profiles was much smaller than the inversely calculated JRC. On the other hand, it became clear that JRC evaluated by the JRC-diagram is almost the same with the inversely calculated JRC, if the size of interlocking is evaluated correctly. Therefore, for the JRC evaluation, it is thought that the JRC-diagram is more applicable than the JRC-profiles. Als ein neues Verfahren zur Bewertung des Rauheitsindexes JRC für die Bruchfläche von Felsenschichten anhand eines fraktalen Modells, wobei auch der Maßeffekt berücksichtigt wird, wird ein JRC-Diagramm vorgeschlagen. Um die Angemessenheit der Bewertung vom JRC mit diesem JRC-Diagramm festzustellen, wurden die JRC-Werte an einer Bruchfläche zwischen Granit und Sandstein sowohl mit dem JRC-Diagramm als auch mit dem herkömmlichen JRC-Profilverfahren bewertet. Anschließend wurden die durch die beiden Verfahren ermittelten Werten mit den JRC-Werten verglichen, die von den Schertestergebnissen mit Hilfe von Bartonschen Erfahrungsformel zurückgerechnet werden können. Daraus ergab sich, daß das JRC-Profilverfahren ziemlich kleinere JRC-Werte gibt als bei der Zurückrechnung, während die JRC-Werte durch das JRC-Diagramm unter entsprechender Bewertung des Ineinandergreifungsmaßes an der Bruchfläche beinahe gleich sind wie die zurückgerechneten Werte. Diese Tatsache weist darauf hin, daß das JRC-Diagramm eine bessere JRC-Bewertungsmethode als das JRC-Profilverfahren darstellt. Nous avons proposé le diagramme JRC, nouvelle méthode d'évaluer JRC qui est un indice de rugosité superficielle d'une fracture de roche à l'aide du modèle de fracturation, compte tenu de son effet d'échelle. Pour vérifier la validité de JRC évalué au moyen de ce diagramme, nous avons évalué JRC d'une fracture de roche, granite et grès, par le diagramme JRC et le profil JRC, méthode conventionnelle, et les résultats ainsi obtenus ont été comparés avec la valeur de JRC calculée en sens inverse à l'aide de la formule empirique Barton sur la base des résultats de l'essai de cisaillement des fractures. Il en résulte que la valeur de JRC obtenue par le profil JRC était assez faible en comparaison avec la valeur calculée en sens inverse alors que celle de JRC obtenue par le diagramme JRC correspondait approximativement à la valeur calculée en sens inverse à condition d'évaluer l'échelle d'endentement d'une fracture. Par conséquent, nous considérons que le diagramme JRC est une meilleure méthode d'évaluation de JRC par rapport au profil JRC.

Two Rivers Platinum Mine (TRP) is a 55:45 joint venture between African Rainbow Minerals and Impala Platinum, respectively. TRP is situated on the farm Dwarsrivier 372KT, in the southern sector of the eastern limb of the Bushveld Complex. Dwarsrivier is underlain by rock formations of the Critical Zone (Winterveld norite-anorthosite) and the Main Zone (Winnarshoek norite- anorthosite). Two economically significant PGE-bearing layers namely the Merensky Reef and the UG2 chromitite are found within the upper Critical Zone. These are approximately 140 m vertically apart, separated by a series of barren norites and anorthosites. At Two Rivers Platinum, only the UG2 chromitite layer is currently being mined for PGEs. The UG2 sub-outcrops north/south along the Klein Dwarsrivier river valley with a very gentle dip to the west of 7º?10º. At Two Rivers the UG2 averages about 120 cm in thickness, overlain by a waste pyroxenite parting about 20 cm thick, above which is a leader seam about 20 cm in thickness. The mineable cut consists of the leader seam, the waste pyroxenite parting, the UG2 chromitite layer including 25 cm of pegmatoidal pyroxenite footwall, below the UG2 reef to a minimum of 185 cm trackless mining cut. The mining method is a mechanized bord and pillar layout, which will yield a total of 185 000 tons at full run of mine production from the underground UG2 mine.

Understanding the interaction between rock bolts and underground rock movement is critical for safe and cost effective underground excavation design. Although early research on this subject involved a balance of theoretical analysis and field measurement, recent work has been heavily focused on analytical and numerical studies. This paper describes technologies that have the potential to redress the balance through instrumentation of rock bolts deployed under routine operating conditions in underground mines. Two new products are presented in this paper. Firstly the U-cell coupler is a load cell device that can be routinely coupled to the threaded end of a bolt prior to installation. It measures the ?series? load at the head of the bolt. Secondly, the d-REBAR involves an array of small-diameter, long-base length displacement sensors recessed into grooves along the entire length of the bolt. Both new instruments are interfaced with on-board digital signal conditioning and telemetry. Methodologies for the deployment of the new instrumentation and guidelines are presented for the interpretation of results based on data obtained from field trials. Successful field installations demonstrate the viability and practicality of these new technologies and, moreover, provide important insight in to rock bolt/rock mass interaction.

February 2, 1999 marks a milestone in earth-moving technology at the San Miguel Lignite Mine. It was on that date that The North American Coal Corporation (NAC) took delivery of three Leica Dozer 2000 GPS grade control systems for use on its bulldozers. The primary reason for the purchase of these grade control systems was to prove that GPS technology could safely and economically be utilized on heavy equipment to assist operators in defining grades. If these properties were successfully demonstrated, the ultimate vision of the project was to expand the system to a point were GPS would become the primary means of providing grade control information to the mine’s heavy equipment operators. Twenty nine months and more than $500,000 later this vision was realized when the final bulldozer operating at the San Miguel Lignite Mine was equipped with Dozer 2000. Presently North American Coal has a total of nine Dozer 2000 GPS grade control systems at San Miguel providing cut and fill information to operators 24 hours a day. These grade control systems have allowed the San Miguel operation to increase safety, reduce costs, improve operator attitude, and better ensure environmental compliance. This article discusses both the nature of these benefits and some of the issues that had to be dealt with along the way.

SINCE the development of dispersion-hardenable lead-antimony alloys1 in the laboratories of the Western Electric Co., Inc., studies have been made of the effect of various third constituents on these alloys.2 This paper covers a study of the effect of small amounts of arsenic. This element is important since it occurs as an impurity in many commercial antimonial leads and the results obtained are particularly interesting as indicating a class of addition agents which exert a stabilizing effect on dispersion-hardened alloys. EXPERIMENTAL In order to-study the effect ,of increasing amounts of arsenic, a series of alloys were made up containing 1 per cent. antimony, and arsenic varying from 0. to 0.10 per cent., the balance Doe Run lead (99.997 per FIG. 1..-CHANGE OF MICRO-BRINELL HARDNESS WITH TIME OF 1 PER CENT. LEAD-ANTIMONY ALLOY. cent. lead). The alloys were cast into bars 1 ½ in. wide by ¾ in. thick and cold-rolled to about 1/8 in. thickness. Between 1977 and 1984, No. 26 Colliery, at Glace Bay in the Sydney Coalfield, suffered from a series of 37 rock/gas outbursts. These events were characterized by the complete pulverization of a sandstone which was propelled into the mine roadway and an associated release of methane gas. The events began to appear at a depth of 700 m and increased in intensity and damage to the excavation as the mining depth increased. At the time of the closure of No. 26 Colliery (as a result of an unrelated fire), these outbursts were the subject of intensive investigation. Although No. 26 is now closed, there is concern that similar events could appear at Phalen Colliery where current development work is proceeding at a depth close to the 700 m threshold. Past investigations into rock/gas outbursts included studies of in situ stresses, the simulation of outburst events in the laboratory, investigations into the potential for destressing an& degassing of problem sandstone and the development of numerical models to assist in the design of openings in outburst prone ground. However, despite this work, methods of predicting outburst conditions are presently limited to examination of probe hole cores for core discing, and methods of working under such conditions are limited to boring and firing and using volley firing techniques to initiate any outbursts while workers are safely out of the heading. During this investigation of worldwide occurrences of this phenomena, literature obtained suggested that outbursts might generate microseismic precursors. An intrinsically safe (IS) microseismic monitoring system was designed and developed based on CANMET's rockburst monitoring system currently in use in hardrock mines, and installed in a development roadway at the deepest extent of the Phalen Colliery. The system will record microseismic activity associated with development work to try to identify characteristic precursors of outburst-prone conditions. This paper describes the steps taken to identify a microseismic system suitable for use at Phalen colliery, of which part of the requirement was that it be IS and approved for use in the Sydney Coalfield. The modifications to the selected system are described, along with its capabilities and the preliminary results of its performance over the first few months of use.

The conservation of fuel became a critical problem during the recent war, particularly in the East. Fuel-oil supplies were short, the demands for coal increased, and householders were called upon to reduce the temper- atures in their homes. Home owners were urged to employ every means avail- able to reduce fuel consumption, the most important of which was to insulate their dwellings. The Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the In- terior, took steps to promote the conservation of fuel by issuing a report3/ on home insulation which has been widely circulated. The American populace responded patriotically to the requests of various Government agencies for voluntary conservation of fuels; they accepted cheerfully the restrictions imposed, the crisis was weathered, and with termination of hostilities the unhappy situation was relieved. Fuel conservation, however, is not merely a war emergency problem; it is a continuous, ever present issue. Coal and petroleum resources are ir- replaceable assets, and when fuel is burned it is exhausted - there is no scrap recovery. Fortunately, the United States has been richly endowed with mineral fuels; but population is growing, industrial demands for fuel are increasing, and mines and oil wells are becoming deeper and more costly to operate. For the sake of generations to come all national resources, particularly irreplaceable fuels, should be conserved. A long step in the direction of fuel conservation is the general rec- ognition that insulation is an essential element of dwelling construction. Fortunately, when the home owner takes measures to conserve fuel, he is not called upon to make purely unselfish (altruistic) sacrifices to advance the general welfare; he has the added incentives of saving money and promoting more comfortable living in his own home.
