There is still a huge challenge in efficiently recovering the arsenides minerals that are largely concentrated in the Platreef Bushveld Complex which constitutes about 21 per cent of the platinum group minerals (PGMs). Therefore new collectors are required to improve the recovery separation of hard to float minerals, in particular sperrylite. The triazine modifications are promising reagents for mineral flotation and have not been given much attention in minerals processing. The adsorption of sodium 2,6-dithio-4-butylamino-1,3,5-triazine (SDTBAT), sodium 2,6- ditrithiocarbonate-4-butylamino-1,3,5-triazine (SDTTCBAT) and sodium normal butyl xanthate (SNBX) on sperrylite (100) surface were performed to identify a well performing collector molecule. We observed that the triazine collectors preferred to bridge on surface As and Pt atoms through the S atoms. We found that the adsorption energies were in the order: SDTTCBAT > SDTBAT > SNBX, indicating that the SDTTCBAT had strong exothermic adsorption on sperrylite and pyrite. These results showed that the ditrithiocarbamate had a great influence in the adsorption strength on the sperrylite surface. Importantly it was found that the triazine collector had stronger adsorption than the xanthate, which portrayed a promising replacement of xanthate collector. These results paved a way for design of novel collector for sperrylite and other chalcogenide minerals to improve their recovery.

It is composed of three distinct components: collaring or marking error, alignment error and trajectory deviation. This study has focussed on the dependence of trajectory or natural deviation on the geological features of the rock mass being drilled.

Syria has about 500 million ton deposit of minerals having 34 per cent iron content with alumina and silica as major impurities. Efforts were made to see the feasibility of concentration by four different methods involving washing, high intensity magnetic separation, reduction roasting and magnetic separation and acid leaching technique. It was observed that the reduction roasting with magnetic separation yields a concentrate with high iron (62.3 per cent) content without requiring water which is a scarce raw material in the region. The paper concludes that the detailed study may be made following this route to optimise the process Parameters.

The Ridgeway gold mine has been an enigma of the international underground hard rock community for nearly 20 years. It nearly didn’t eventuate as it was more than 500 m below a farmer’s paddock in Central New South Wales when the exploration team, looking for open pit deposits, got a sniff on its last attempt and then drilled the high-grade discovery hole. It took separate studies to find an economic mining approach. Newcrest, then a mid-tier mining company, took the venture that set it on a path of growth and built what was to become the backbone of the company for the next 15 years.The initial mining method was sublevel caving (SLC) for the upper 300 m of the orebody. The nameplate production rate for the SLC was 4 Mt/a, which was reached in June 2002 shortly after the commissioning of the materials handling system. The ultimate production rate was subsequently lifted to around 6 Mt/a through a series of innovative and efficiency initiatives. In June 2007, approval was granted for the development of a block cave (BC) operation to extract the ore reserve situated immediately below the existing SLC operations, Ridgeway Deeps. The BC was designed at approximately 6 Mt/a to match the concentrator and a systematic improvement process through the entire underground system again saw delivery rates consistently around 10 Mt/a.In line with the production rate increases, Newcrest was also committed to advancing caving knowledge through a number of targeted research and development experiments and new processes. These were primarily related to improving cave ore recovery through systematic draw marker trials, cave propagation through preconditioning techniques with associated monitoring systems. New technologies were also developed to improve the safety and efficiency of the mine through data collection, cave establishment techniques, production dispatching and autonomous loading.CITATION:Dunstan, G, 2016. Three of the five primary aluminum producers in the Pacific Northwest have facilities in the region to make aluminum mill products. Only one of the three, however, produces a variety of shapes and forms. The principal reason for the lag in development of an aluminum mill products industry was found to be transportation cost. The long range outlook is for expansion, based mainly on growth of the western market for aluminum used in construction, containers and packaging, electrical applications, diesel trucks, mobile homes, and irregation pipe. Consumption of western aluminum mill products in 1985 is projected at 1.1 million tons, compared with estimated consumption of 250,000 tons in 1961.

The Scully Mine, situated in the Labrador Trough near the Quebec-Labrador boundary, is one of the world's largest continuous ore deposits. This paper outlines the sequence of the mining operations from the planning stages to the delivery of the ore to the crusher at an average rate of 50,000 tons per day, 7 days per week. The principal equipment required to maintain this production rate includes four 12.\1.1-inch rotary drills, seven 8-cu.-yd electric shovels and a fleet of large haulage trucks. Particular attention is given to grade control, programmed by computer, drilling and blasting techniques and operational aspects inherent with open-pit mining in Canada's North.

The increase in the price of gold in 1933 was the cause of starting many activities in gold prospecting and mining; it led to investigations of many of the so-called desert placers in the Southwest, which heretofore had not been deemed of commercial importance. Among these, attention was called to some of the gravel beds in the vicinity of the Randsburg-Atolia mining districts of Kern and San Bernardino Counties, Calif., in which gold and scheelite, (calcium tungstate, CaW04) were said to be present. Following a partial sampling and testing of the gravel, large-scale operations were begun in 1935. During the same year more detailed sampling and testing of the gravel beds were done by the author. During 147 days, 1,239 test holes 28 inches in diameter were drilled; their total depth amounted to 16,705 feet. These test holes furnished 2,495 samples of an average volume of 1.0583 cubic yards bank run each; all of the material was run through a sample mill constructed on the property. Original and rather unusual sampling and testing methods had to be used; milling and mining methods for large-scale operations also offered difficulties. The primary purpose of this drilling and sampling campaign was to determine, over a large area, the amounts of gold and scheelite recovered by placer methods such as were already in use on the property. This paper describes sampling and testing methods employed by the author during the 1935 drilling campaign. LOCATION The gold and scheelite placer deposit is in the Atolia tungsten mining district about one-half mile west of the small mining town of Atolia and about 5 miles south of Randsburg in the Randsburg gold-mining district. The deposit lies near the foot of the Rand Hills, in the Mojave desert. The territory is served by hard-surfaced roads from the north and south; Los Angeles is 150 miles to the southwest. A branch of the Southern Pacific Railroad passes within 5 miles of Randsburg.

The diffusion of carbon in Co-5% Fe alloy was studied in a belt-type pressure system at temperatures of up to 1330°C and press loads or nominal pressures of 7 020 tons or 42±3 kbar. Under these conditions, this alloy is in the solid state. Discs of graphite and prealloyed Co-5%Fe were used to make up the diffusion couple. The diffusion coefficient increased with increasing press load due to the tendency of the low density graphite to dissolve in the metallic phase reducing the overall volume and increasing the density of the system. Furthermore, inhomogeneous plastic deformation may have promoted diffusion by creating defects in the alloy. Diffusion couples treated at atmospheric pressure exhibited graphite particles in the metal, while those treated at high pressures exhibited carbide in the form of Widmanstatten laths. Carbon analyses indicated increased carbon solubility with increasing pressure. This was confirmed from calculated high-pressure phase diagrams.

A series of explosive detonation experiments was conducted in NIOSH’s Bruceton and Lake Lynn Experimental Mines to evaluate low level (<6 psig) detonation wave propagation behavior in single and multiple entry configurations. Entry cross-sectional area varied from 5 to140 m2 and explosive weights of Pentolite ranged from 0.24 to 2.4 kg. Behavior of the detonation wave was evaluated through recording of the pressure as a function of time and distance from the explosive detonation in single and multiple entry interconnecting tunnels. Peak pressure from detonation of an explosive in an underground mine maintains magnitude for a greater distance than is the case on the surface and is shown to follow the simple scaling rela-tionship P = 702.8(W/Vt)0.514(0.65)n, where P is the peak detonation pressure in kPa, W is the weight of the explosive charge in kg, Vt is the total volume in m3, and n is the number of splits, n = 0, 1, 2, …n. The total energy, or impulse, I, generated by these detonations can be expressed as I = 1.34(W/A)0.64n, where W is the weight of the explosive charge in kg, A is the area of the main tunnel in m2, and n is the number of side en-tries, n = 0, 1, 2, …n.

Conversion of hydraulic equipment to fire resistant fluids has been hampered by less than satisfactory component performance and in some cases, catastrophic equipment failure. Concern over identifying possible causes to these problems led to a joint research project between the Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan Mining Limited and the University of Saskatchewan. This paper summarizes some of the results and conclusions derived from this joint project. In this study, the research was limited to evaluating the effects of potash contamination on the performance of hydraulic equipment. Two separate types of tests were conducted in order to provide a basis upon which trends could be established. This study concluded that the presence of potash dust in the hydraulic fluid can induce severe wear over relatively short periods of time. It was also deduced that a contaminant free fluid combined with proper fluid maintenance could extend the performance of hydraulic components using fire resistant fluids even under very severe operating conditions, such as elevated pressures and temperatures. Recommendations as to how to achieve this goal and the practicality of doing so are presented.

Foamed cement packs offer a viable alternative to conventional timber or other forms of packs for permanent underground support. These packs comprise steel mesh and hoop containment with an outer bag for the grout; woven, laminated polypropylene fabric being ideal for the purpose. The grout is supplied in 25kg bags and fed into a purpose ? designed foam placer machine which delivers the foamed grout directly to the packs from 60 metre long delivery hose. Foamed cement grout as a fill material offers attractive properties for support packs, in summary these are: Variable Grout Strength Grout strength is controlled by the grout density being delivered from the placer machine. This can be changed by the machine settings. Strength Development Fast rate of strength development is possible so that support is available quickly. Pack yield The foamed grouts are compressible so that yielding of the grout pack can be achieved without loss of support. Rate of Filling Three sizes of placer machine are available, these use one, two, or three 25kg bags per minute of grout, pack filling time is therefore a matter of minutes, a typical 0.75m diameter pack x 1.2m high taking some 17 minutes to fill. Tests in a 1000 tonne press have confirmed that the above characteristics can be achieved with foamed cement packs at acceptable cost. This will be illustrated in the paper with experience to date.

Porgera mine is 95 per cent owned by Barrick Gold Corporation. It is located at an altitude of 2200–2700 m above sea level in the Enga province of Papua New Guinea and produces approximately 460 000 oz per annum with a proven and probable reserve of 6.2 Moz. The refractory ore is ground in a conventional semi-autogenous grinding and ball mill circuit. After the gravity gold is recovered, the slurry is floated, oxidised in the autoclaves and then leached. This paper will focus on the flotation circuit and the recent upgrade of the control system. The five interdependent flotation circuits were challenging for operations to control as they dealt with variable grade, throughput and circulating loads, as well as the physical limitations of the equipment. With the installation of 18 Portage Froth Characterization® (PFC) cameras, the plant’s operation has been converted from a level-control based strategy that was focused on individual cells to one that targets grade and recovery control across the entire circuit. Variability in feed and the corresponding launder issues were addressed with a unique site initiative of deflector plates to indicate filling level. Non-linear closed loop control was implemented directly in the DeltaV Distributed Control System (DCS) using Portage Advantage Regulatory Control (PARC) algorithms and optimised with AwaRE advanced controllers. The most noticeable benefits achieved with the upgrade include improved flotation gold recovery, consistent flotation sulfur grade and autoclave performance. Geologic resource assessments describe the location, general characteristics, and estimated volumes of resources, whether in-situ or technically recoverable. Such compilations are only an initial step in economic resource evaluation. Forecasts that assume that resources that exist in nature can be commercially produced as needed ignore economic constraints. This paper identifies, by example, the salient features of a geologic assessment that will assure its usefulness for economic analysis. These features are demonstrated with examples of coal resource assessments and coal bed gas assessments.

"The purpose of this paper are (1) to present a broad picture of the recognized methods of measuring the various forms of atmospheric pollution; (2) to evaluate the significance of such measurements; and (3) to suggest suitable methods for obtaining comparative information on the concentration of contaminants in city air.The atmosphere (the gaseous envelope surrounding the earth) consists of a mixture of gases. These gases and their usual proportions are:4/The volume of water vapor in the atmosphere ranges from almost zero (in very cold weather) to about 5 percent arid averages about 1.2 percent.Strictly speaking, any other substance in the atmosphere or an excess of any of the substances mentioned (with the possible exception of water) is a contaminant. Needless to say, there are many contaminants in the atmosphere.In accordance with their physical state, contaminants may be classified as gaseous or particulate, and the latter may be classified as solid or liquid matter. Particulate matter, especially when dispersed in some medium such as air or some other gas, sometimes is referred to as dispersoid, and the complete system of gas and dispersoid is referred to as aerosol.All substances on the earth are potential sources of atmospheric contaminants. Combustible materials (particularly fuel for heating and power), sea water, earth or soil, metals, and animals (including man) are some of the important sources of contaminants.Ordinarily gases are produced by chemical processes, whereas dispersoids are produced by both chemical and physical processes. There are two general dispersoid-producing processes: (1) Condensation, in which molecules join to form larger units or particles, and (2) disintegration, in which large units are reduced to the particulate range (which for the purpose of this article may be considered to be from 100 microns, or 1/254 inch, down to molecular size) by such processes as crushing, grinding, abrading, and atomizing.“Condensoid"" is a convenient term for dispersoids formed by condensation, and ""disintegrasoid"" for those formed by disintegration. The Coal Resources Survey commenced in 1974 as a search for Huntly Power Station coal, but soon developed into the most detailed regional coal search programme to be instituted in New Zealand. The program was initially conceived as geological in nature, but later included geotechnical, geohydrological, mining assessment, coal use, and environmental considerations in its investigations. The programme never undertook development work but has provided Government and the private sector with a sound basis for identifying development options. The discovery of large-scale coal resources in the Mokau, Waikato, and Taranaki regions and the lignite resources of Otago and Southland are a measure of the Survey&apos;s success. The directive by Government to phase out the NZCRS to a large extent coincides with the completion stage of the program. With most of the detailed regional study finished, it now remains to collate the data and publish summary reports at Coalfield and Coal Region level, in order to maximise the use and value of the data collected over the years.

An experimental evaluation of a selective agglomeration process in which an agglomerated coal rich phase was produced as a result of mixing light oil to various raw coal slurries is described. The beneficiation achieved by this method is compared to that obtained bv conventional froth flotation. The results suggest&apos; that oil agglomeration is a more selective process than froth flotation and is less sensitive to variations in feed pulp density. Selective agglomeration has the additional advantage of producing a low moisture content product. The effect of replacing flotation filter cake with an equivalent amount of selectively agglomerated product in coke-making was studied with the aid of a pilot-scale coke oven. The results suggest that the principal effect of such a measure is to increase the bulk density of the charge.

conditions. The soils included 65 m of rock not exceeding an unconfined compressive strength (UCS) of 200 kgf/cm2, 130 meters of soft clay, silt, and sand not exceeding 30standard penetration test SPT blows per 300 mm, and 220 m of rock ranging between an UCS of 400-600 kgf/cm2. The river crossing, utilizing 1778 mm OD x 19 mm wall x600 mm steel casing pipe without intermediate jacking stations, was part of a seven kilometer liquefied natural gas (LNG) transmission line in South Korea. This 440-m, 1,442-ft, river crossing was microtunneled through three different ground conditions and completed in just over three months. The crossing was achieved with an average of 25 m of ground cover and 15 m of water cover. The Kwang Yang River Crossing was part of a 7 km liquefied natural gas pipeline project for POSCO, a Korean steel producer. The microtunneling machine was custom built for this project. The microtunneling machine selected for this project was tooled with 7 button bits and 2 roller bits. None of the cutter bits were replaced during the drive. Inside the machine, before the spoils laden slurry was pump back to the surface, it would pass through an independent cone crusher. The crusher is placed in the slurry flow to make sure that none of the spoils are so large as to stop the return flow of the slurry. An additional requirement was for the inclusion of a compressed air lock. The air lock was required in the event that the cutter tools required replacement. The cutters were back loaded so that the workers would have access to change the cutters in the event of cutter failure or wear out. No intermediate jacking stations were installed for the drive. The soils included 65 meters of rock not exceeding an unconfined compressive strength (UCS) of 200 kgf/cm2 with production averaging between 7 and 20 mm/minute. The second zone contained 130 meters of soft clay, silt, and sand not exceeding 30 standard penetration test (SPT) blows per 300 mm with production averaging between 80 and 180 mm/minute. The third zone contained 220 m of rock ranging between an UCS of 400-600 kgf/cm2 with production averaging between 7 and20 mm/minute. The steel casing pipe was 1778 mm OD x 19 mm wall x 6000 mm long. The project profile, see Figure 1, shows the soil conditions. The hand written numbers locate just above the pipeline are the production dates. The circled numbers are the 10 pipe joint increments. The Maragorik Prospect represents a partially eroded Pliocene acid sulphate style epithermal gold system hosted within the Sigule Volcanics and Riet Bed sediments which is inferred to have formed from a degassing porphyry body at depth. A regional sinistral rotation provided by transform faults associated with the opening of the Manus Basin imparts a dilational character to mineralised NE trending faults formed parallel to the Warangoi Graben. A controlled-source audio magneto-tellurics (CSAMT) survey has identified E-W trending buried conductors which may represent alteration formed within dilation zones. While some gold mineralisation occurs within vuggy silica at Palang Hill, the target is auriferous enargite (luzonite)-bearing breccias from the LK1 and Gureki areas.
