The feasibility of developing the Underground Science City below the Kent Ridge Park has been investigated. The primary aim of the study has been to explore the possibility of creating underground space to house a new community of research laboratories and offices. The investigation represents the first such study undertaken in Singapore for a non-military underground facility. The paper describes the geology of the Underground Science City site and illustrates the layout and plan of the Underground Science City. The geology and rock mass below the Kent Ridge Park is generally favorable for the development of an underground cavern complex. Underground Science City can be potentially developed housed in a cavern complex. Several potential development schemes are studied; with various combination of deep/shallow mined caverns of different span sizes and access options. The preferred scheme is shallow, mined room-and-pillar caverns with large spans and shaft accesses at both existing surface Science Park 1 and Science Park 2. The scheme can be potentially expanded laterally to create more underground space for new Underground Science Cities at Kent Ridge area.

The mineral sector is a fundamental part of the U.S. economy. It contributes to the real gross domestic product (GDP) at several stages —basic (mining), intermediate processing, manufacturing of finished goods and construction. The real GDP increased by 3.5 percent from 2004 to 2005. The nominal GDP was $12.5 trillion at the end of 2005. Housing starts were up by more than 5 percent for the year, and the unemployment rate decreased to 5.1 percent in 2005 from 5.5 percent in 2004. The prime interest rate increased from 5.25 percent at the beginning of the year to 7.25 percent at the end of the year. The value of minerals mined in the United States in 2005 rose significantly because of increased unit prices for some metals —particularly molybdenum — and significantly increased production for some industrial minerals, mainly cement, construction sand and gravel, and crushed stone.

In 2001, at the CIM AGM in Quebec, a paper discussing poor ground conditions in a newly opened area at Agrium?s Vanscoy Potash Operation?s, suggested load transfer around old workings as a possible reason for the early room failure. High closure rates are expected in deeper regions however the rapid failure of walls immediately behind the face resulted in protective guards being mounted on and behind the borer. The high closure and early rib failure continued well past any reasonable distance to be explained by load transfer around old workings and investigations continued into possible reasons other than simply depth. Detailed investigations into the mineralogy and crystal fabric of the ore zone provided one possibility, which combined with a changed borer cutting profile are now believed to have contributed greatly to the poor conditions.

O aumento crescente dos requisitos de segurança a serem atingidos pela indústria automotiva vem cada vez mais exigindo a utilização de aços com maior conteúdo tecnológico, que é o caso do aço bifásico (“dual-phase”), que são caracterizados por uma microestrutura ferrítico-martensítica. Neste trabalho, estudaram-se, em escala laboratorial, os efeitos das temperaturas de encharque intercríticas (750, 800 e 850°C) e distintas taxas obtidas por dois diferentes meios de resfriamento (ar e ar forçado) na obtenção de microestrutura bifásica a partir de dois aços laminados a frio “full-hard” (produzidos industrialmente), com micro-adições de Nb e Mo e diferentes teores de C e Mn. Utilizando ensaios mecânicos de tração, microscopia óptica (MO) e eletrônica de varredura (MEV), observaram-se as influências da temperatura de encharque e da taxa de resfriamento sobre as microestruturas resultantes e as influências da presença de ferrita encruada, dos carbonetos não dissolvidos e da morfologia da segunda fase sobre as propriedades mecânicas das amostras estudadas.

Train services through the Channel Tunnel linking Britain and France where scheduled to be fully restored in February 2009 following several months of repairs after a major fire in the tunnel on Sept. 11, 2008. A lorry caught fire on a shuttle train carrying heavy goods vehicles bound for France through the 50-km- (31-mile-) long northern tunnel. The fire, that spread to other vehicles, raged for about 16 hours. The extreme temperatures of up to 1,000º C (1,832° F) caused extensive damage to about 600 m (2,000 ft) of the 7.6-m- (25-ft-) diameter tunnel?s concrete lining, approximately 11 km (7 miles) in from the French entrance. The Channel Tunnel operator, Eurotunnel, awarded the repair con-tract, estimated to be between ?50 to 60 million, to a consortium of Freyssinet, Eurovia Travaux Ferroviaires (ETF) and Vinci Energies. Freyssinet was appointed to look after the civil engineering works, while ETF would be responsible for track and overhead wire restoration and Vinci Energies responsible for other equipment. The technique of hydrodemolition, which uses high-pressure water jets to remove concrete from various structures, was specified as the method to remove the fire damaged concrete. Freyssinet subcontracted the concrete removal to the specialist hydrodemolition and industrial cleaning contractor Philip Lasserat.

"IntroductionCemented backfill has been placed underground in slurry form in Inco Limited's Ontario Division mines since the early 196Os. The slurry was traditionally mixed on surface at between 65 and 70 wt% solids* and transported underground via gravity through a borehole-pipeline distribution system. This method of placement, while simple and dependable, has proven to be costly because of the large amounts of transport water involved.A significant quantity of the slimes buildup on mine levels is caused by the backfill water carrying cement and other fine material out of the stopes. The level cleanup and eventual pumping or hoisting of the slimes and water back to surface result in substantial indirect backfilling costs.The cement that remains in the stope is always overhydrated because of the high water cement ratios that exist. As a consequence, high concentrations of Portland cement must be added to the backfill to produce the fill strengths required for the different mining methods.Pouring backfill at these densities also demands extensive fill preparatory work in the stopes to withstand the hydraulic heads created by the slurried fill. This, along with the delays in pouring necessary to allow for water drainage, result in significant losses in productivity.These negative aspects of slurry placed fill has led Inco Limited to investigate several methods of transporting backfill underground via pipeline, at higher densities (i.e. 75 to 95 wt.% solids). Three separate transport methods are presently being experimented with by the Company's Mines Research Department. Each utilizes a different technique or form of flow transport, i.e. concrete pumping technology, high density slurry flow, and pneumatic conveying."

There are multiple stages in a mining operation that a mining engineer has to draw polygons to be used as operation guidelines. These polygons are drawn by hand and based on engineer?s experience. However, having automatic procedures for forming the shapes can increase the quality and decrease the efforts required. These shapes need to be homogenous in grades and rock types so that the quality and dilution of material sent to the plant can be estimated with the good approximation. In this paper, a clustering algorithm with shape control is introduced which can provide reasonable guidelines for all the aforementioned shapes by manipulating its parameters. At the end, implementations of the algorithm on a small part of a gold deposit with different mining strategies is presented and evaluated based on homogeneity of grade, rock types and determined destinations as well as the shape.

AT Bunker Hill the original charge storage and preparation system was installed in 1917 to accommodate lead-silver gravity mill products. Only minor tonnages of wet fines such as vanner and flotation concentrates were received. Charge flux and diluent requirements were provided by an ample supply of siderite middlings and coarse lime-rock. While oversize material was crushed through %-in., the use of roll crushers in series resulted in a more or less granular, free-running charge of adequate porosity. Under such conditions, receipts could be proportioned directly from receiving bins, and suitable blending was obtained by passing the resultant layered composite through a small Stedman disintegrator. This elementary system served well for production and smelting of an extremely lead-rich sinter, in the low column blast furnace. Here sinter physical quality is less critical, and appreciable quantities of raw flux and oxidized ore may be charged directly to the blast furnace without seriously impairing furnace capacity. Prior to 1938 the relative proportions of zinc receipts were low and extraneous flux requirements at a minimum. However, subsequent war-inflated zinc demands brought marked increase in fine concentrate and slimy zinc leach residue receipts and an abrupt introduction to smelting a more refractory zinciferous charge. The higher temperature demands of the more refractory zinciferous charge required a higher smelting column and the higher column, in turn, rendered the blast furnace less receptive to improperly prepared feed. Inadequate presinter processing facilities prevented the production of acceptable sinter, and blast furnace production declined to 50 pct of former capacity. In view of a prevailing contention among lead metallurgists as to the deleterious action of high zinc slag on blast furnace capacity, it was natural to overstress this factor and to concentrate on possible changes in furnace design. Another interpretation was that primary correction should be sought through expanded sintering facilities. The processes of magnetic separation and cyclone classification are common in the mineral processing industry, and frequently the two are found in consecutive stages in the beneficiation of a magnetic mineral ore. The application of a magnetic field across the cyclone, to combine the two stages in treating a magnetic mineral pulp, has been investigated with a view to possible practical applications in the mineral industry The results of this research reveal that magnetic particles can be manipulated within the cyclone body by the application of a magnetic field, and that magnetic grades may be significantly upgraded with recoveries in excess of 90%.

This paper reviews the potential hazards posed by the toxic fumes produced by detonating explosives in surface mining and construction operations. Blasting operations produce both toxic and nontoxic gaseous products; the toxic being mainly carbon monoxide (CO) and the oxides of nitrogen (NO x ). The quantity of toxic gases produced by an explosive is affected by formulation, confinement, age of the explosive, and contamination of the explosive with water or drill cuttings, among others. Techniques to protect workers and the public from the potential hazards of explosive-related toxic fumes are discussed.

A hard lump char containing only 4 to 5 per cent ash, 0·25-0·30 per cent sulphur and a trace of phosphorus has been produced from Latrobe Valley brown coal by slow drying and carbonization of ordinary industrial briquettes at temperatures between 7000 C and 14000 C. The briquette char can be made with a variety of reactivities by varying the maximum temperature of carbonization; the higher the temperature, the lower the reactivity. The strength of the fuel compares favourably with metallurgical coke made from black coal, though it may not be quite so resistant to abrasion. Experiments in a small experimental cupola indicate that it will make a satisfactory fuel for use in iron foundries. It may also find extensive application as a smokeless fuel in other branches of industry and in household heating appliances.INTRODUCTIONVictoria, like South Australia and Western Australia, is apparently without 'significant deposits of black coal of coking quality but there are huge reserves of brown coal of high moisture content (60-66 per cent) in the Latrobe Valley (well over 20,000 million tons have been proved) and there are other important deposits in the south central portion of the State (Herman, 1952).For three decades Victorian industries, including a few metallurgical firms, have been using the briquettes made at the Yallourn factory of the State Electricity Commission of Victoria (S.E.C.). These briquettes, having a moisture content of about 15 per cent and a calorific value of approximately 9,500 B.T.U. per pound, are satisfactory for certain grate-type furnaces but they are not suitable for use in cupolas of other shaft furnaces because they disintegrate badly on rapid heating.

BCT® - Belt Casting Technology is the new horizontal near-net-shape casting process to produce flat steel products. BCT is the revolutionary leap in casting technology, designed for the production of special and conventional steel grades. Within a partnership between Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH and SMS Siemag AG, the worldwide first caster is now in operation. SMS Siemag AG (in cooperation with Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH) has erected the first industrial-scale casting machine located at Peine steelworks. The lecture will start with an overview about the highlights of the BCT® process with regard to the mechanical engineering aspects, while the second part will present current commissioning results and operation experiences. Since December 2012, the BCT plant is running. Up to March 2015 more than 90 casts have been carried out, 26 with FeMn-alloys. Never before flat steel was casted in dimensions of 1000 mm * 15 mm and with casting speeds more than 14 m/min.

Jetstream pressure distributions and coal cutting rates were determined for a number of nozzles and under different operating conditions. The jetstrearn pressure distribution data were fitted to an assumed curvilinear equation by the utilization of a numerical least-squares technique with the aid of a digital computer. Subsequent manipulation of the approximation equation showed that the total force of the jetstream, rather than its maximum pressure or total kinetic energy per unit Lime, was the most significant quantity affecting the coal cutting rate. A shorter method for assessing the ability of a nozzle to cut coal was found.

"A Demag CC1800 crawler crane was partially erected on crane mats adjacent to a seawall when settlements near a corner of the crane mat area were observed to be slightly larger than previously assessed. A ground improvement program including installation of dry soil cement mix (DSM) piers was implemented to improve soil bearing capacity. Due to near-surface obstructions, only 75 percent of the DSM piers were installed to the design depth. Because of the partial installation of the DSM piers, an evaluation of the crane pad stability and the effect of the crane loading on the stability of an adjacent 10-ft high concrete seawall, which was believed to have limited (if any) reserve capacity, was required. A two-dimensional finite element model was developed to evaluate the responses of the partially improved ground and the sea wall to the loads imposed by the crane. Geotechnical site investigation and laboratory testing programs were performed to better define the subsurface conditions near the area where settlements occurred and to provide the required mechanical parameters for the soil constitutive model. Analysis results indicate that total and differential settlements of the crane pad and the increase in load on the seawall were tolerable provided limited excavation and replacement of weak dredged soils outside the DSM area would be implemented.INTRODUCTION & BACKGROUNDA Demag CC1800 was erected on 8 ft × 16 ft crane lattice mats at about 12 ft from an existing seawall. Approximately 3.5 in. of subsidence was observed at one corner of the crane mats, while the crane was partially erected and stationary. The approximate location of the crane mats with respect to the existing seawall when the subsidence occurred is shown on Fig. 1.The seawall consists of a reinforced concrete wall connected by reinforced concrete bents to a composite section of sheet pile wall; the total depth of the seawall is about 29 ft. The bents are spaced at about 20’4” and supported by five piles at each bent location. The composite sheet pile consists of concrete and a sheet pile section with a reinforced concrete wale section. The retaining wall is about 10 ft in height and is supported at three levels. The first support level comprises a 2-½” diameter steel rod near the top of the wall spaced at 40’8” the second and third level supports comprise 1-½” diameter steel rods spaced at about 5’6”. The second level support is inclined at about 10 degrees below horizontal and the third level support is oriented horizontally through the wall footing. A schematic of the seawall section is shown on Fig. 2.A geotechnical site investigation was implemented soon after the subsidence was observed. The program included advancing four borings to a depth ranging from 16 ft below ground surface (bgs) to about 30 ft bgs. In general, the investigation showed sandy material (likely fill that was used behind the retaining wall) from the ground surface in two borings located immediately behind the retaining wall. The other two borings furthest from the retaining wall showed very soft to soft clay (possibly dredged material) from the ground surface to a depth of about 10 ft bgs. Based on this information, the ultimate bearing capacity of the subsoils was estimated to range from 1,200 to 2,000 pounds per square feet (psf). From the anticipated crane loading (weight of the crane and loading lifts), a minimum allowable bearing capacity of about 1,500 psf would be required for safe operation. To achieve the required bearing capacity a ground improvement program was selected and implemented."

This U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) report summarizes a field demonstration of pneumatic backfilling technologies conducted at the abandoned Hillside Coal and Iron Slope in Vandling, P A. Researchers demonstrated two pneumatic backfilling technologies recently developed under the USBM's Abandoned Mine Reclamation Research Program, the Pneumatic Pipefeeder and the High-Efficiency Ejector. Both systems had previously been evaluated at the USBM's subsidence abatement investigation laboratory near Fairchance, P A. The objective of the demonstration was to fill 100% of the abandoned tunnel with backfill stone to prevent further subsidence. The Pneumatic Pipefeeder was used for 21 days, at a rate of 63 to 124 t/ d (69 to 136 st/d), to fill 88% of the tunnel. The High-Efficiency Ejector was used for 2 days, at a rate of 125 to 132 t/d (138 to 146 st/d) to fill the remaining 12% of the tunnel. The backfill placed by both systems was tightly compacted. The major problem encountered was wear on the polyethylene pipeline from the abrasion of the high-velocity backfill. The use of heavier steel pipe minimized the problem. A cost analysis for the entire project is given.

Slags produced by modern smelting furnaces contain copper values which are unacceptably high for discard. The electric arc furnace is employed commercially to clean copper from flash furnace slags but the addition of highly oxidized converter slags to an electric furnace has created operational problems. Highly oxidized Noranda Reactor slags have not been processed successfully in a pyrometallurgical process. These slags, which contain large concentrations of copper (5 to 10 per cent), are treated in slag concentrators (controlled cooling, crushing and milling, and flotation) which produce a copper concentrate that must be resmelted. Though commercially operable, it will be shown that the slag concentrator has important process and cost disadvantages as compared to a pyrometallurgical process. In this paper an economic comparison is made between a pyrometallurgical process and the slag concentrator. For the analysis, five hypothetical smelting plants are considered. Each plant treats 1200 tons of copper concentrate per day and produces 109,000 tons of copper annually. The plant configurations used in this study are:

"As part of a major diversification project, RHI AG, through its plant in Drogheda Ireland, has developed a Caustic Calcined Magnesium Oxide (CCM) for use in the Cobalt (Co) & Nickel (Ni) hydrometallurgical extraction industry. In the course of the project, the company investigated the chemical and physical properties of a number of different Magnesia’s used in Co & Ni hydrometallurgy applications and has been able to determine the important parameters for a successful Magnesia for this application. A number of live plant trials have confirmed the results of this testwork and the company is now proceeding to produce this product in commercial quantities at Premier Periclase Ltd., the RHI AG plant in Drogheda, Ireland. This paper will outline the development work conducted by the company and highlight the important chemical and physical properties that make a successful CCM. Much of the research was conducted at the RHI Technology Centre in Leoben, Austria. In addition, a number of external laboratory studies were conducted on behalf of RHI AG. The result of this work has allowed the company to develop a Magnesia product with optimised properties for use in the Cobalt and Nickel hydrometallurgical extraction process.INTRODUCTION Premier Periclase is part of RHI AG, a globally operating supplier of refractory products, systems and services, headquartered in Vienna, Austria. The company produces Magnesia from seawater at its plant in Drogheda, Ireland. While the main focus is on production of refractory grade Dead Burned Magnesia for the steel industry, the plant also produces a number of different grades of Caustic Calcined Magnesia as well as Magnesium Hydroxide products. As part of a major project to diversify the company’s product base, the use of CCM in the Cobalt (Co) & Nickel (Ni) hydrometallurgical extraction industry was investigated. One of the company’s highly reactive grades of Caustic Calcined Magnesia was found to be particularly suitable for this application. In an effort to understand what makes a successful Magnesia for hydrometallurgy the chemical and physical properties of different Magnesia’s used in Co & Ni hydrometallurgy were investigated. This paper and conference presentation outlines the findings of this process."

Tremendous interest has been evidenced in the subject of dewatering and drying ooal for the past 10 years, and yet little effort has been made to summarize the literature, at least so far as this country is concerned. Only a few published articles have dealt solely with dewatering and drying coal. In most cases the subject has been discussed briefly, either in general terms or as to specific installations. It is desirable that a compendium be prepared collecting in one place information on the dewatering and drying of coal, the needs for this process in various fields, the available equipment, and the current American practice in regard to it. This work was underta..lten by the :Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the University of Alabama. New coal-washing plants in which various types of dewatering and drying equipment were in operation were visited in-Pennsylvania; Ohio, India...~a~ and Illinois. The dewatering·and drying of coel has .been studied in this coimtry by the Surface Preparation ·Committee of the ·coal Operato~s• Committee of the .American Mining ·Oongress. "BackgroundThe paper discusses post-mining land use however, the essence of the topic is the emotional motivation behind the decisions related to mining investment and development. Therefore this is not a typical SAIMM technical paper about the science and techniques of post-mining land use. There are already numerous papers written and conferences held on this aspect of post-mine land use; the science is well understood, but the evidence of the practical application of the (environmental, social, and economic) science is sparse. At a recent conference held in November 2017 on the theme of ‘Science, Business, Society Dialogue – linking science, society, business and policy for the sustainable use of abandoned mines in the SADC region’, it was demonstrated through the delivery of several papers on the possible viable options of post-mine land use. The conference was structured in nine sessions, covering the following relevant topics:? Sessions 1 and 2: Nature and magnitude of the problem: raising awareness? Sessions 3 and 4: International experiences in remediation: case studies? Sessions 5, 6 and, 7: Technological solutions: converting liabilities into assets? Session 8: Implementing solutions: social and legal aspects? Session 9: Wrap up, lessons learned: conference resolution.Summaries of the key outcomes of the sessions are available for reference.The aim of this paper, accompanied by the video speech, is to provide a visualization of the possibilities of post-mine land use. Mining contributes approximately 7% to South Africa’s GDP - this is the lowest it has ever been and is attributable to both a diversifying economy and to poor mining and investment policy which has resulted in reduced investment in the sector. The objective of the paper is to highlight the opportunities, for succeeding and diversifying economic activity following mining and mineral extraction which can continue to sustain the livelihoods and wellbeing of communities and societies beyond mining.During mining, very few alternative and local economies develop. Dependence on mining and its value chain prevails until mining ceases. This idea is conveyed in Figures 1a and b."
