The REGCHEM (Regional Exploration Geochemistry) stream sediment geochemistry database of open file mining company data, managed by GNS Science, was recently made accessible via the internet (http://maps.gns.cri.nz/website/minmap/). REGCHEM provides coverage of selected elements in mineral rich areas of New Zealand. Analysis of REGCHEM data highlights problems with inconsistencies between different surveys in terms of sampling methods, number and types of elements analysed, analytical techniques and detection limits. New, consistent multi-element geochemical surveys with national coverage are required. To test sampling, analytical and data treatment techniques for the new surveys, a pilot stream sediment geochemical survey was carried out in the Thames area, Hauraki Goldfield. Seventy samples were collected in an area of 220 km2 representing about one sample every 3 km2. The samples were analysed for 50 elements, mostly by XRF.   Regional patterns are apparent in the concentrations of some elements. Several elements, such as As, Cd, Cu, K, Pb, Sb, Se, and Zn exhibit anomalous concentrations mainly in the western part of the study area, related to Au-Ag-Zn-Pb-Cu epithermal quartz veins and porphyry Cu occurrences in hydrothermally altered andesitic terrane.   Mercury is anomalous in southern samples, reflecting cinnabar occurrences in the Kauaeranga valley (eg Mangakirikiri), and the occurrence of cinnabar as a late stage mineral in some of the Thames epithermal veins. Ba and U are anomalous in the eastern samples, and these anomalies are probably related to the presence of rhyolitic rocks in the eastern part of the project area.

Heavy mineral deposits have been known from Liberia since the1950s from both river and beach placers. The heavy mineral content of beach sands ranges between 28?62% and the suite includes ilmenite, rutile, zircon and magnetite. These occur together with kyanite, sillimanite, staurolite and garnet. The average ilmenite content is 82% with minor zircon (11%), rutile (6%) and monazite (1%). The ilmenite is, however, of poor quality with haematite intergrowths and a titanium content ranging from10?42.4% (average ±25% TiO2). The amounts of rutile and zircon, while of suitable quality, have also previously been deemed too low for economic exploitation.

Amphiboles are hydrated mineral silicates five of which occur in asbestiform habits as asbestos grunerite (amosite) asbestos, riebeckite (crocidolite) asbestos, anthophyllite asbestos, tremolite asbestos and actinolite asbestos] and non-asbestiform habits (grunerite, riebeckite, anthophyllite, tremolite and actinolite). The asbestiform varieties are characterized by long, thin fibers while non-asbestiform varieties such as cleavage fragments form short fibers with larger widths. The U.S. regulatory method for counting asbestos fibers (aspect ratio [>]3:1, length [>]5 µm) does not distinguish between asbestos and cleavage fragments. The method biases toward increased counts of non-asbestiform cleavage fragments compared to long, thin asbestos fibers. One consequence of this regulatory approach is that workers can be erroneously classified as exposed to concentrations of asbestos (asbestiform amphiboles) above the U.S. 0.1 f/mL exposure standard when in fact they are not exposed to asbestos at all but non-asbestiform amphibole cleavage fragments. Another consequence is that the known carcinogenic effects of asbestos may be falsely attributed to non-asbestiform amphibole cleavage fragments of the same mineral. The purpose of this review is to assess whether amphibole cleavage fragments pose the same risk of lung cancer and mesothelioma characteristic of amphibole asbestos fibers. We identified three groups of workers exposed to non-asbestiform amphiboles: two groups exposed to grunerite (Homestake gold miners and taconite miners) and one group exposed to industrial talc containing non-asbestiform tremolite and anthophyllite in St. Lawrence County, NY. In addition to assessing strength of association and exposure?response trends in the non-asbestiform amphibole cohorts, comparisons were also made with cohorts exposed to the asbestiform counterpart (positive control) and cohorts exposed to the mineral (e.g. talc) that does not contain amphiboles (negative controls). The cohorts exposed to non-asbestiform amphiboles had no excesses of lung cancer or mesothelioma. Similar results were observed in the negative control groups, in stark contrast to the excess risks of asbestos-related disease found in the asbestos cohorts. The only possible exception is the twofold increased risk of lung cancer where exposure was to industrial talc containing cleavage fragments of tremolite and anthophyllite. However, this risk is not considered attributable to the talc or amphibole cleavage fragments for several reasons. A similar increased risk of lung cancer was found in Vermont talc workers, studied in the same time period. Their exposure was to relatively pure talc. There was no relationship between lung cancer mortality and exposure measured as mg/m3 years and years worked. A case?control study reported that all the lung cancer cases were smokers (or former smokers) and attributed the excess to smoking. There were two mesothelioma cases among the NY State talc workers exposed to cleavage fragments of tremolite and anthophyllite, but talc is not a plausible cause because of too short latency and potential for previous asbestos exposure. The positive controls of tremolite asbestos and anthophyllite asbestos exposed workers showed excess risks of both lung cancer and mesothelioma and positive exposure? response trends. St. Lawrence, NY talc does not produce mesotheliomas in animals while amphibole asbestos does. In sum, the weight of evidence fully supports a conclusion that non-asbestiform amphiboles do not increase the risk of lung cancer or mesothelioma. ©2008 Published by Elsevier Inc. "Industry practice for defining acid consumption is based on column tests. Freeport-McMoRan (FCX) has adopted a practice of leach operation using a defined pH or gpl acid in the raffinate based on the column test program. The acid consumption can be easily calculated using the leach operating parameters of SX-EW efficiency, lift height, bulk density, irrigation rate, primary leach cycle time, acid cure dose and acid concentration in the raffinate. The column leach test results and a column to heap efficiency factor are used to define the copper extraction. The maximum acid consumption will occur when zero acid is contained in the raffinate. The term Net Extracted Value (NEV) is to define the maximum extracted value relative to acid consumed.This paper presents the operating logic and method used to calculate acid consumption based on column tests and operating parameters.INTRODUCTIONIndustry practice for defining acid consumption is based on column tests. This may result in lower economic value if the tests are not designed to account for operating variables. A test program is described to assist in defining lift height and the influence of gangue on solution chemistry. A simple spreadsheet is presented that will use the leach operating parameters of SXEW efficiency, lift height, bulk density, irrigation rate, primary leach cycle time, acid cure dose and acid concentration in the raffinate to calculate the acid consumption for a proposed operation.A review of current leach operations solution chemistry will help to define acid consumption. This is recommended for all current leach operations.DISCUSSIONThe current practice at Freeport-McMoRan (FCX) is the use of column test results to define operating parameters. The monitoring of operational solution chemistry and copper production addresses any changes needed in operational parameters. This practice maximizes the value extracted from each tonne of ore leached."

Until recently, the fire protection systems used to protect mining equipment were based on generically designed, off the- shelf concepts. These systems were reliant on single agent approaches and were generally comprised of a series of small twenty or thirty pound chemical canisters that would discharge their contents when triggered by thermal detection means. As the equipment grew in capacity, the logic used to increase the protection was to add more chemical canisters to the system. Hydraulic excavators and large-scale mining trucks grew dramatically in size into the 1990?s and beyond; with this growth came the increase in major losses due to fire. This was evidenced throughout this period, and continues to be of great concern today. During this presentation you will learn of the significant changes that have come about as a result of this history. Today, dual-agent products, infrared detection and unit-specific, engineered systems are the primary phrases used when discussing how to best protect this equipment from fire loss. This session is a must for anybody looking to optimally protect their equipment assets and for those looking to renew and/or secure new insurance for high value equipment in the future.

Two methods of calibrating the parameters K and Alpha for use in Gy’s formula for the fundamental sampling error were investigated. Approximately 480 kg of broken ore from Harmony’s Target gold mine in South Africa was used to compile the replicate samples for two experiments. The duplicate series analysis (DSA) and segregation free analysis (SFA) methods differ in terms of their approach to recovering the sized materials required for the calibration procedure. In this experiment the DSA method split off six more-or-less equal masses of material from a 75 kg lot that was successively crushed to finer and finer fragment sizes. The sublots so formed were split into 32 samples and fire assayed for gold. The SFA method used approximately 250 kg of broken ore crushed to 95 per cent passing 2.50 cm, which was then passed through successively finer screens until a sublot of less than 0.0075 cm was obtained. Each of the 15 sublots obtained in this way were split using a riffle splitter into 32 samples that were fire assayed. A total of 672 fire assays were used in these experiments. The sampling parameters K and Alpha were used for the compilation of a nomogram and to calculate the gold liberation size of the ores. While there are no definitive results in terms of the actual gold grain sizes against which the calculated sizes can be compared, it appears that the DSA method produces more acceptable results.CITATION:Minnitt, R, 2014. The purpose of the research described in this report was to develop techniques for using ilmenite from domestic deposits for the production of titanium tetrachloride. The research was done by the Federal Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the General Services Administration under contract DMP-116, Utilization of Domestic Ilmenite. Bench-scale continuous chlorination of an Idaho ilmenite containing 27.9 percent titanium and 35.6 percent iron yielded a crude titanium tetrachloride suitable for purification and for the production of titanium metal and pigment. A summary of the results of 380 hours of operation showed that 82.4 percent of the titanium was chlorinated, with 92.5 percent utilization of chlorine. The construction- of a. quartz tube chlorinator 4-inches in diameter and 24 inches long is described with the necessary details of operation.

"One of the outstanding problems confronting automotive engineers in attempting to construct motors of greater economy is that of eliminating the ""knock"" from the operation of the engine. Recent investigations of this detonation or knock in internal-combustion engines, especially of the high-compression type, have demonstrated that it can be eliminated or reduced by decreasing the reaction velocity of combustion by adding small quantities of certain compounds to the gasoline, This makes it possible to use engines of a higher compression ratio, thereby greatly increasing the mileage per gallon of gasoline consumed. The savings in fuel reserves from increasing the proportion of crude oil marketable as motor fuel and in permitting the designing of more efficient engines are obvious.Ethyl gasoline, one of the widely used anti-knock fuels, is ordinary motor gasoline to which has been added 3 c.c. of tetraethyl lead and 2 c.c. of a halogen carrier, as ethylene dibromide or trichiorethylene, or approximately 0.06 per cent of the lead compound and 0.04 per cent of ethylene dibromide by volume. Ethyl gasoline should not be confused with ethyl fluid, which is a mixture of concentrated tetraethyl lead and ethylene dibromide in the prowler proportions for mixing with gasoline, but is not a motor fuel and is not sold to the public. Also tetraethyl lead is not a motor fuel, and likewise is act sold to the public."

Pile foundations are extensively used in the construction of various types of superstructures, including tall buildings, bridges, freeways and offshore structures. A fully constrained tip embedment such as a rock-socket offers an attractive solution for achieving significant tip resistance and improving the load-carrying capability of the foundation element. In profiles with very soft surficial soil, rock-socketing often provides the only reliable source of axial and lateral resistance. In preparation of a large-scale testing program on rock-socketed piles at UC Irvine (UCI) geared towards studying the magnitude of shear amplification at the rock-soil boundary of pile foundations, a pre-test model-scale experiment was executed in the UCI Structural Laboratory. The objective of the model-scale experiment was to iterate and validate the test setup, study the influence of important boundary conditions, assess instrumentation techniques and sensor placement, and to gain preliminary insight into the small-scale specimen non- linearity. In addition, this model-scale study provides ample opportunity to compare lateral performance parameters with analytically predicted lateral load behavior using traditional soil resistance functions and limit state analyses and explore new techniques for the derivation of soil resistance functions. The pile specimen had a pile diameter (D) of 10 inches and a total pile length of 125 inches. The pile was embedded in a 40 inch simulated rock socket overlain by 52 inch of medium dense sand (DR~50%). The pile extended 32 inches above the soil surface, where cyclic lateral loading was applied. The pile was installed in a laminar metal frame box with inside dimensions of 39 inches in width (W), 73 inches in length (L) and 86.1 inches in height (H) as shown in Figure 1. During testing, the box was restrained using a rigid bracing system consisting of concrete reaction blocks, wooden braces and steel girders.

The publication of the Lerchs Grossmann paper in 1965 outlining a threedimensional graph algorithm for ultimate pit definition set the standard for the mining industry regarding pit optimization. Although the algorithm provides a solution from a static standpoint (i.e., assumes instantaneous mining), it is widely used for commercial packages to generate ultimate pit limits and intermediate phases. However, the solutions delivered are presented in canned reports lacking connection to the original data, which prevents further data analysis and extended reporting. The approach presented in this paper attempts to overcome such barriers by performing openpit optimization through databases. An adaptation of the Lerchs Grossmann graph algorithm is used to generate nodes, arcs and tree structures in customized tables to determine the maximum closure of a graph.

In an industrial setting, operational changes are continually introduced, driven by new technologies or changing economics. Because of day-to-day variability, quantifying the impact of these changes based on metallurgical performance requires long trial periods to achieve statistically significant results. Tools and techniques developed by the mineral processing group at McGill University have allowed for direct measurement of process variables (e.g., bubble size, gas and solid holdup). Two case studies are described where direct measurement techniques were used to evaluate: a) a new rotor stator mechanism; and b ), the introduction of a new frother type. Application of these methods has accelerated the evaluation of process changes and improved confidence in results.

500 Folsom Street is part of the new Transbay neighborhood in San Francisco, which is being redeveloped after the 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake damaged a freeway viaduct; removal of the viaduct created parcels of land available for development. The development consists of a 42-story residential tower with a six-level basement. The slender, core-only structure was designed using performance-based seismic design. Subsurface conditions include undocumented fill, Dune sand, marsh deposits, sand, and clay, all overlying sloping bedrock of the Franciscan Formation. The building is supported on a 10-foot-thick mat foundation approximately 62 to 72 feet below street grades; clay, sand, and bedrock are all present at mat subgrade. Under a portion of the mat, sand susceptible to liquefaction was present. The variable subgrade conditions and potential for ground failure, along with the depth of mat subgrade below street grade, created a challenge for the design and construction team to solve. The ground below mat subgrade needed to be improved to mitigate the liquefaction potential and provide more uniform support. The areal extent and depth of ground improvement necessary to support the mat with an acceptable amount of deformation was determined. Settlement was analyzed and subgrade moduli were provided for design of the mat, with multiple iterations performed to converge between the geotechnical and structural models. Based on the project schedule and logistics, it was beneficial to work from street grade to improve the ground. In order to target the depths below the mat and minimize wasted effort and materials within the depth of excavation, grids of jet grouting were determined to be the most economical ground improvement method; however, it was challenging to install the columns from 65 feet above the top of the target zone. During installation, QA/QC was performed to check that the jet-grouted columns were installed to the design depth and diameter and developed the design strength.

The performance of seals in boreholes, shafts, and tunnels is an important concern in mine safety, in the control of effluents from operating and abandoned mines, and in the underground containment of hazardous wastes (Einarson and Abel, 1990; Mining Waste Study, 1988). Despite the clear need for effective seals, few documented test results are available concerning the performance of in-situ seals. Some evidence indicates that horizontal or near-horizontal holes are especially difficult to seal properly (Kelsall and others, 1982). This research involved the installation, extensive hydraulic testing, removal, and post-test examination of a l0-cm-long by 10-cm-diameter cement grout seal in a near-horizontal borehole in limestone. The work was performed in an underground mine on Marble peak in the Santa Catalina Mountains, Arizona. A test hole was diamond cored in the re-crystallized limestone of the Escabrosa formation. The hole is 33.24 m long, 10 cm in diameter, and dips at 10.4 degrees. The hole extends between two drifts and thus is accessible from both ends.

The tensile behavior of copper foils prepared from rolled bulk material has been studied over the thickness range 2 to 53 , and for a range of pain sizes. For foils of comparable grain size, having the cube texture and tested along (100), yield strength increases with decreasing foil thickness t below -26p, with a corresponding decrease in ductility. Deformation occurs in the form of localized slip clusters distributed throughout the gage section. To the extent that the tensile strength (10 to 18 kg mm-) is unaffected by foil thickness, and that the foils possess fair ductility, the stress-strain behavior resembles that of bulk material rather than that of whiskers or evaporated films of comparable dimensions. The dependence of yield strength o on foil thickness t below -26p is of the form: oy = oo + kt-1/2. Possible explanations for the stress increase are considered based on 1) the dependence of active dislocation source length on foil dimensions, 2) the locking of surface sources, or the blocking of mobile sources at the surface due to surface film. It is now well-established that filamentary whiskers of many materials show exceptionally high strength compared with bulk crystals.'-11 As the diameter of the whiskers decreases to -1, the observed fracture strength approaches, and in certain cases exceeds, the calculated shear stress for the nucleation of slip in a perfect crystal.' In general, the stress-strain curve is entirely elastic, with strains at fracture approaching 1 pct. Similarly, thin films12-24 of evaporated or electrodeposi-ted material have been shown to possess tensile strengths three to seven times that of bulk material, with total strains at fracture -1 to 2 pct. In the present study, attention has been directed to the room-temperature tensile behavior of thin foils of copper over the thickness range 2 to 53, prepared from rolled bulk material. Yield stress, ultimate tensile strength, elongation to fracture, and work-hardening behavior are measured as a function of grain size and foil thickness. Structurally such foils are superior to either evaporated or electrodeposited films, and in the recrystallized condition exhibit considerable ductility. Apart from preliminary work by Sumino and Yamamoto25 on the work-hardening behavior of rolled and recrystallized copper foils, no systematic tensile studies have been carried out on material of this form. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Tensile specimens were prepared from 99.995 pct purity rolled copper foils of thickness 2, 6, 12, 26, and 53, obtained from the Hamilton Watch Co., Lancaster, Pa. Irrespective of specimen shape, it is necessary to use tensile foils with edges free from notches or tears. To this end, any form of cutting operation was excluded, and the tensile foils prepared using a photoengraving process, the details of which are described elsewhere.26 Since tensile data are required under conditions of uni-axial stress, the specimen shape is extremely important. Ideally, the foil should be infinitely long, allowing a gradual taper from the grip area to the gage section; however, from a practical standpoint, long foils are easily damaged during testing. A modified tensile specimen was therefore selected having a parallel gage section 1.25 by 0.20 in. with a tapered shoulder section increasing to 0.5 in. at the grips, and an over-all length between grips of 4 in., Fig. 1. In practically all tests, these foils fractured within the parallel gage section. By approximating the foil contour (Fig. 1) to a hyperbola it is possible to analyze the stress distribution in the tensile foil using two-dimensional elasticity

New data on the geology of the Late Jurassic to Holocene sediments cover of the World and associated mineral resources (oil, gas, ferromanganese nodules, ores of massive sulphides and other metals) have been compilled in the Atlas at scale 1:25,000,000 and 1:10,000,000. The work was performed by scientists from four Institutes of Russia (VNIIzarubezhgeologia, VNIIoceangeologia, Vernadsky Institute of Geochemistry and Analytical Chemistry of theRussian Academy of Sciences and Geological Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences). The Atlas shows variation of thickness and formational composition of the large complexes (Upper Jurassic-Early Cretaceous, Upper Cretaceous Eocene, Oligocene-Neogene, Pliocene-Pleistocene), distribution of oil/gas and ore deposits in each complex, data of deepsea drilling (leg 1-130),  thermo-pressure condition in the sedimentary basins within Circum-Pacific Rim.

The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) conducted a respirable dust survey to evaluate the effectiveness of a water curtain utilized for dust control on continuous miner sections. The purpose of this survey was to determine if the water curtain was effective in reducing respirable dust concentrations, since several mines currently use water curtains to control miners? respirable dust exposures. The survey was conducted on a supersection of an underground coal mine, which utilized two continuous miners on the same split of air. Each continuous miner alternated taking a cut so that both continuous miners would not operate at the same time. The underground coal mine is located in Knox County, Indiana. The water curtain evaluated in this survey was located in the last open crosscut between the intake side continuous miner and the return side continuous miner. When the intake side continuous miner cuts coal, its exhaust air would be used to ventilate the return side of the section. The intent of the water curtain was to reduce the intake air respirable dust concentration (generated by the intake side continuous miner) before the air stream ventilated the return side of the section. To determine the effectiveness of the water curtain in reducing respirable dust concentrations, respirable dust sampling pumps were placed on both the intake side and the return side of the water curtain. Additional respirable dust sampling pumps were placed farther downstream from the water curtain to monitor dust levels downstream of the water curtain, but in an area where respirable dust would not be created by anything other than the intake side continuous miner or additional section air. The water curtain and the respirable dust sampling pumps were operated only when the intake side continuous miner was cutting coal. The samples were analyzed for respirable dust and quartz content. The water curtain showed minimal effect in controlling respirable dust and respirable quartz dust, but the reduction was so negligible that this survey could not quantify the reduction. The measured reductions are within the accuracy of the sampling equipment.

Enhanced gravity separators (EGS) provide a more efficient separation than froth flotation when cleaning coal in the 150 x 25 µm particle size range. To improve the performance of an EGS unit, air bubbles were injected into the feed stream in an attempt to decrease the apparent density of the coal particles due to the formation of bubble-coal particle agglomerates. Air injection had a significant impact on operating characteristics and separation performance. Coal recovery was increased by 10 to 20 absolute percentage points while a 2 percentage point drop in the minimum product ash content was also achieved.

"Secant bored pile walls are frequently used as retaining walls in watertight excavations to cut off ground water aquifers and are subsequently exposed to ground water pressure loading in addition to earth pressure loads. To avoid extra loading from ground water pressure in soils with limited permeability, it can be useful to arrange drainage windows within secant bored pile walls by means of single primary piles filled with porous concrete without reinforcement cages, which usually have to be placed within casings in submerged conditions. This concrete may serve as a horizontal arch between the reinforced secondary piles, but it must however enable vertical draining between load carrying construction beams and the bottom of the excavated pit. In the present submission, the results of several material tests with different mix designs of porous concrete with certain admixtures are presented together with first and important experiences with a wellsuited placement technique for porous concrete casings in small- and large-scale laboratory tests. It can be shown that the usual placement technique of employing a tremie pipe is not suited for this type of unsaturated concrete. Instead, pouring with a particular kind of cone and an open conductor pipe has proven successful.Additionally, special testing methods are currently developed for judging the suitability of the desired concrete mix design in preparation for an upcoming real-scale experimental pile installation in Germany.1. INTRODUCTIONRetaining walls are often built as secant bored pile walls in order to cut off aquifers saturated with groundwater against deep building pits. In soil types with relatively low permeability, however, seepage flow may be permitted, because the quantity of groundwater to be pumped is limited, and the range of influence due to dewatering is not reaching far. Thus, the hydrostatic water pressure on the retaining wall can be considerably reduced, leading to a more economic design (see Fig. 1).In unsaturated soils, the dewatering effect can be achieved by means of porous pervious concrete with a uniform grainsize distribution of aggregates typically placed in a borehole under dry conditions. With regard to the use of porous concrete to be placed at the ground surface in road pavement applications, experience is sufficiently available as shown, for instance, by Neithalath et el. (2010). However placing the porous concrete in a bored pile using a tremie pipe under submerged conditions is a challenge and a completely new approach, because there is a considerable risk of segregation of the fresh concrete, separating the cement lime paste from the aggregates when in contact with water and leaving only neat gravel on the one hand as well as a tight cemented area at the bottom of the pile on the other hand. If this concrete placement is successful, additional dewatering by means of extra wells behind the retaining wall can be avoided. Of course the seepage flow in the adjacent soil needs to be regarded seriously."
