Initial experiments towards preparation of hollow ceramic microtubes by dip-coating of fibrous plants with water based alumina gel-casting slurries using hemp and coconut fibres as templates have been done. It has been found that the wettability of fibres and accordingly the stability of the developed ceramic layer on their surface during slurry gelation varied significantly within the different fibre types. Good correlation between the diameters of the template fibres and the resulting channels has been found at the level of solids loadings used, 31 %. Hemp fibres used as bundles have led to formation of multi channel patterns while the coconut fibres-templated process resulted in uniform monochannel materials. The micro tubes have show good mechanical handling.

It is not uncommon to find large quantities of combustible materials in underground metal and non-metal mines. Support timber is the predominant combustible material. Spontaneous combustion, welding and cutting, shorted or overloaded electrical cables and careless smoking are common ignition sources. More recently, there is increased use of diesel mobile equipment that requires fuel storage and transfer areas. Diesel fuel spillage on hot engine manifolds and motors can result in rapid flame growth and heavy smoke accumulation in a matter of seconds. In-expensive, reliable fire detection and suppression systems are available to provide early warning of fire conditions and to isolate and extinguish fires that originate in fuel storage and transfer areas. This report presents an example of how technology developed and demonstrated under Bureau of Mines Contract H0242016, Mine Shaft Fire and Smoke Protection System, may be applied to protect underground diesel fuel storage and transfer areas. "The Ernest Henry Mining (EHM) ore body is an iron oxide copper gold deposit with an average grade of 1.1 percent copper, 0.5 g/tonne gold and 22 percent magnetite. At the end of 2009, EHM converted the ball mill media charge from forged steel to high chrome media. At high pH values (above 10.5), forged media is passivated, so as the pH of the system drops the media corrosion rate increases and floods the system with corrosion products, affecting flotation. As the high chrome media is much more inert, pH has less of an effect on copper flotation response. Given this, the pH in the roughers was dropped from 10.6 to 9.6 and it was found that there was a slight increase in copper recovery and no statistical change in either the rougher or final copper concentrate grades for copper and gold. With the reduction in pH, there was a noticeable reduction in lime usage from 0.85 kg of lime per tonne of ore processed to 0.55 kg/t. This reduction in lime is equivalent to approximately $700,000 per annum at current production rates.INTRODUCTION The Xstrata Copper Ernest Henry Mine (EHM) is situated 38 km north east of Cloncurry, Australia. The mine began as an open-cut operation in 1998 and transitioned to a multi-sourced operation in December of 2011, utilising ore from the newly completed underground mine in addition to ore mined from the Mount Margaret Mining operations. EHM produces a combined copper gold concentrate containing 25 000 t of copper and 35 000 oz of gold annually, utilising a three stage grinding circuit along with a four stage flotation circuit. In addition to this EHM also produces 1 000 000 t of magnetite concentrate annually via a further grinding and three stage magnetic separation circuit. Based on metallurgical test work performed by Magotteaux between 2002 and 2008, the step to change from forged steel media to 18 percent chrome media was taken in 2009 in a bid to alter the pulp chemistry to improve the flotation performance in the plant (Greet, Kinal, Twomey, & Peatey, 2010). This plant trial resulted in: • Increased dissolved oxygen levels within the pulp, • A ball mill discharge Eh shift of 25 mV to more oxidising pulp potentials, and • An EDTA extractable iron percentage reduction. These improvements in the pulp chemistry resulted in an increase of 1.7 ± 0.6 percent in copper recovery and an increase of 2.9 ± 1.7 percent in gold recovery. As the plant trial using high chrome media was successful, the use of the media was adopted as the standard for the ball mill. This implementation opened the door for further process improvements around the flotation circuit."

The Tren Urbano project in Puerto Rico includes a 19 m diameter tunnel constructed by the stacked drift method, which involves installation of a pre-supported concrete arch using multiple tunnels. Geotechnical conditions consisted of weak rock and highly weathered, unstable alluvial soils. Due to low cover, reinforcement of the arch was required. Ground behavior ranged from firm ground to mixed-face to raveling and flowing ground. Consequently, construction of the individual drifts involved many different soft-ground techniques such as steel set supports, shotcrete support, shield tunneling, forepoling, and consolidation grouting. During construction, the design was modified to improve constructability. Although settlement was experienced during excavation of the drifts, arch movements were within predicted limits and minimal surface settlement was observed upon excavation of the interior.

In 1992, the Bureau of Mines evaluated mineral resources of the 34,043-hectare Caribou City and 41,943-hectare Stump Creek study areas in southeastern Idaho. No resources were delineated. The areas had been proposed for wilderness. Rocks underlying the study area are part of the Idaho-Wyoming Thrust Belt. At Caribou Mountain they have been intruded by diorite-monzodiorite. Where the intrusive rocks contact calcareous members of the thrust belt, skarn bodies have formed that host metal deposits. Gold, both placer and lode, occurs in the Caribou City area, and salt occurs in the Stump Creek area. Production records show 73.5 kg (2,363 ounces) of placer gold were produced; however, field studies indicate more than 2,000 kg (67,000 ounces) probably were recovered. Minor amounts of lode gold, silver, and copper were recovered from the hard rock mines. Production of salt from the Stump Creek study area in the 1860's was used by emigrants on the Oregon trail and also shipped to various mining districts for use in silver recovery. Oil and gas were drilled for, but all holes are plugged and abandoned. There are no current leases. Examined workings consisted of 25 adits, 3 shafts, 50 prospect pits, and extensive placer workings all in the northern tip of the Caribou City area, Current BLM records show 168 placer and 146 lode claims; 14 claims are patented.

“Given the increasing scrutiny of the mining industry and its relatively poor record with regards to mine tailings management, increased requirements to minimise water usage (often accompanied by very high costs of water) and the need to demonstrate achievable long-term closure strategies, it is likely that the option of a filtered tailings system will need to be considered in many operations in future.” (Australian Centre for Geomechanics, 2018). Given such a statement as a conference introduction, it is only appropriate that a range of potential technologies are investigated and compared, to create awareness for even underrated but appropriate technologies. The advantages and disadvantages of all technologies need to be considered and analysed. Suppliers are swift to promote their technologies advantages; however aspects of sustainability are not always fully understood. Perhaps a combination of two filtration technologies is appropriate. This paper delves into the technical details, good or bad, of four mechanical dewatering technologies in tailings dewatering and provides insight on an undervalued and, in the author’s opinion, young technology – the screw press.

"Zn-Pb sulfide mineralization at Abbeytown mine and Twigspark quarry comprise the only known car¬bonate-hosted base metal sulfide deposits in the Sligo syncline, northwest Ireland. Limestone sedimentation occurred uniformly throughout the region during the Early Carboniferous (Mississippian) as observed by field relationships and lithofacies; however, petrographic and stable isotope evidence indicate that host-rock dolomitization occurred under different conditions at localities to the west and east of the Ox Mountains inlier, suggesting significant uplift and geologic isolation of these areas prior to dolomitization. Localized fluid flow systems are thought to be responsible for sulfide mineralization and associated epigenetic carbonate cements. West of the Ox Mountains inlier at Abbeytown, evidence of three geochemically distinct fluids are observed: (1) a lower-temperature, lower-salinity fluid (70°-130-°C, 4-9 wt.% equiv. NaCl); (2) a lower-temperature, higher-salinity fluid (70°-140°C, 15-24 wt.% equiv. NaCl); and (3) a higher-temperature, moderate-salinity fluid (165°-220°C, 8-14 wt.% equiv. NaCl). Similar fluid types were observed at the Twigspark deposit. The source of the higher-salinity fluid is likely seawater evaporated to near the point of halite precipitation. The higher-temperature fluid is thought to have been derived from deep circulation of basinal brines. It is speculated that mixing of the higher-salinity fluid with the high-temperature fluid was vital for ore formation at Abbeytown because fluid inclusions in sphalerite have homogenization temperatures and salinity values that fall along a mixing trajectory of these end member fluids. Also, areas where the high-salinity end member fluid is absent are barren of sulfides. Less complex fluid systems are indicated for sites east of the Ox Mountains inlier where no sulfide mineralization was observed. Data from base metal sulfide prospects in northwest Ireland indicate no connection with the regionally extensive flow system thought to be responsible for Zn-Pb deposits throughout the Irish Midlands.Les minéralisations en sulfures de Zn-Pb de la mine Abbeytown et de la carrière Twigspark sont les seules gîtes de métaux usuels à encaissant carbonaté connus dans le synclinal de Sligo, au nord-ouest de l’Irlande. A survey of selected West Coast Streams was undertaken in Summer 2001, Summer 2002 and Winter 2002 to establish the degree of arsenic (As) contamination in waters and sediments downstream of old coal and gold mine workings on the West Coast. Of the catchments studied, Soldiers/Ford Creek and Rapid Stream showed the most significant elevated As concentrations, predominantly in dissolved form, and evidence of AMD or ARD contamination (high sulfate concentrations and/or acidity). The rate and processes of removal of dissolved arsenic from the water column (attenuation) have been studied in these catchments. The Rapid Stream and Soldiers/Ford Creek catchments are directly affected by adit drainage from the Sullivan and Blackball coal mines respectively. Both catchments have high As concentrations in the sediments, with up to 770 mg/kg in Soldiers Creek and 490 mg/kg in Rapid Stream. Dissolved As concentrations are significantly elevated in the neutral pH waters of Soldiers Creek; typically as high as 100 - 200 ¦g/kg, up to 500 m downstream of the main adit discharge (800 ¦g/kg As). Adit inflows to Rapid Stream were acidic and contained 20 - 30 ¦g/kg dissolved As, with relatively high concentrations of arsenic in the stream water in winter (up to 18 ¦g/kg), but not in summer. Analysis of concentration trends and As:SO4 ratios downstream of these obvious As sources confirmed that dissolved As had been actively removed from the water column, but varied seasonally with greater removal evident in summer. Adsorption of arsenic onto iron oxide in the stream sediments is the most likely mechanism of removal. The Snowy River catchment, on the other hand, has relatively high As concentrations in both the sediments and the water column, but there was little evidence of a distinct AMD or ARD input from the Blackwater gold mining area. Preliminary investigation suggests that dilution rather than attenuation is responsible for decreasing As concentrations downstream.

Enhancement of Energy Efficiency in Fine Grinding of Copper Sulfide Minerals Using a Pilot-Scale Stirred Media Mill - IsaMill The mineral liberation size of run of mine ores has dramatically reduced over recent years. As a result, the demand for fine grinding which is the most energy-intensive form of grinding has markedly increased in the minerals industry. Furthermore, the fine grinding costs increase exponentially with decreasing product particle size. As a result of the increased energy requirement for fine grinding, it is desirable to optimise fine grinding processes such as stirred media milling (ie IsaMill) to enhance energy efficiency, throughput and the product fineness. In the present study, the influence of slurry rheology, grinding media type and grinding media-to-feed size ratio on energy efficiency in a pilot-scale IsaMill was investigated under certain industrially relevant pulp processing conditions. It was shown that a critical rheological state existed, below which the energy required to achieve an 80 per cent passing (ie P80) 20 ¦m product size was unaffected by shear rheology (ie apparent viscosity and shear yield stress) whilst above which the grinding energy required increased dramatically with increasing shear rheology. Colorado River sand (3.35 mm) showed higher energy efficiency than MT1 ceramic media (2.5 mm) for a target P80 of 20 ¦m in the solids concentration range of 38 to 55 per cent by weight, but the former experienced more than four times the wear rate of the later. The high wear rate of the Colorado River sand may be due to its much lower hardness. For feeds with an 80 per cent passing (ie F80) 70 to 110 ¦m, 2.0 or 2.5 mm MT1 media appeared to be more energy efficient than 3.5 mm MT1 media whilst a media-to-feed size ratio of 41 to 53 is applicable for ~50 ¦m (ie F80) feeds for efficient grinding.

Previous methods for measuring the flow of solids in Jnrdraulic conveying have not considered the important effects of slip velocity and particle concentration. In this paper an extension of the method proposed byShirato et al. (J. Chem. Engng. 'Japan, 1: 164-167) for determining mass flow in a vertical conduit is outlined.The present method consists of measuring' the volumetric flow of the slurry (by a magnetic flow meter for instance) and the density of the slurry in two pipe sections of different diameters. Effects of variation of slip withparticle concentration, not previously considered, are allowed.Problems involved in estimating the density of a slurry from differential pressure measurement are discussed.The major problem is the uncertainties in estimating frictional losses due to the wall in two-phase flows. The greater reliability of a more "direct" technique, such as by 'Y-ray absorption, for measuring solid concentration is emphasized.

We Americans fondly believe that ours is the greatest , most progressive and most civilized country in the world , but the cold statistical facts reveal that we apparently have little appreciation for the lives of those whose efforts of various kinds give us whatever greatness we have . The latest available statistics indicate that the annual death rate per 100,000 persons , from accidents is nearly 80 , or far higher than that of any other country in the world ; it is more than double the rate in Denmark , Belgium, Netherlands , France , Sweden , Italy , Ireland , Germany , Norway, and Austria; it is practically double the rate in England and Wales and in Japan , and is from 25 to 60 per cent higher than the corresponding rate in Scotland , New Zealand , Australia, Switzerland , and Canada . And added to this is the fact that of the main industries of the United States mining has by far the worst accident record , viewed from either the frequency or the severity basis . The National Safety Council's latest figures for 27 of the country's main industries give mining the highest or worst accident frequency rate, 74.43 in 1929 ; meat packing comes next with 55.94 , and construction third with 50.41 . In accident severity in 1929 mining also was the worst offender , with a rate of 9.99 ; quarrying is second with 6.11 , and construction third with 4.62 . Metal mining's frequency rate in 1929 was 52.16 , as against 69.25 for bituminous coal mining ,99.68 for anthracite mining, and 74.43 for the entire mining industry ; accident severity for metal mining in 1929 was 5.99 , as against 11.69 for bituminous coal mining , 10.87 for anthracite mining , and 9.99 for the mining industry as a whole . Although this figure indicated that metal mining is on a much safer plane than either bituminous or anthracite coal mining, the frequency rate of 52.16 for metal mining was higher in 1929 than the frequency rate of all but one of the other 26 industries about which data are available ; the metal mining severity rate of 5.99 , while much better

This paper details Keeler/ Dorr-Oliver's experience with the application of fluid bed combustion technology to the burning of coal-mining waste. The designs of two stage fluid bed combustors/dryers are demonstrated as useful in the drying of coal, slag and coke, using coal and coal refuse (gob) as fuel. Anthracite mining refuse (culm) is more than abundant in Northeastern Pennsylvania. After demonstration at Shamokin, Pennsylvania, a full commercial-sized fluid bed boiler using culm is used for district heating in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. Limited research work has shown the utility of using fine coal as filter aid in sludge in¬cineration. With the rising avenues of the suitability of coal as auxiliary fuel in fluid bed sludge incineration, an expansion of these concepts combines the use of coal or coal refuse as filter aid and auxiliary fuel. How can employees be stopped from engaging in unsafe work practices? It is often easier to prevent employees from performing unsafe acts through manipulations of the work environment than through various training or motivational programs. Therefore, it is important that accident prevention programs seek to identify the reasons for the unsafe behavior and to redesign tasks and the work environment (e.g., tools, equipment, physical surroundings) in order to remove employees from sources of harm and to prevent situations from arising that would prompt them to perform unsafe acts. Unfortunately, in the mining industry the work environment is often innately hazardous, rapidly changing, and difficult to predict, making it very difficult, perhaps impossible, to fully protect the employee by environmental manipulations. Therefore, it is important that effective methods be identified for influencing mine employees to work safely. Various strategies have been used to convince employees to avoid unsafe acts and/or adopt self protective behaviors. The intent of this article is to provide guidance to mine operators concerning the use of four techniques for influencing mine employees to work safely: (1) employee surveys, (2) incentives, (3) fear communications, and (4) disciplinary actions.

Although hosted within an Ordovician magmatic arc, the Peak Hill high sulphidation system displays features typical of youngerPacific Rim high sulphidation epithermal gold deposits. Regional NW trending transfer structures are inferred to localise the magmatic source at their intersection of the NS trending arc. Fluids have migrated from the magmatic source along NW structures and thence exploited permeable horizons, which have become silicified. Alteration displays typical zonation from silicification through assemblages characterised by alunite, pyrophyllite and kaolinite and is followed by breccia/fracture controlled sulphide and gold deposition. Sinistral rotation on the NS arc has dilated NW trending fractures to produce the WNW to EW dilational fractures which host the higher grade ore. Mineral assemblages are typical of formation distal to the magmatic source in an epithermal environment. The combination of alteration and mineralisation zonation with structure provide fluid vectors which target a magmatic source to the SE of Peak Hill.

Many factors influence the results of hydraulic fracturing to stimulate well productivity. Most of these factors have been studied and their effects discussed in the literature. However, the movement of sand through the crack during fracturing has received little consideration. Exactly where the sand goes in the fracture, how it gets there, and how this might influence results have not been studied, judging from published reports. To get an answer to some of these questions we have studied sand movement through a simulated crack segment in the laboratory. Although the work is preliminary, we have answered some questions about sand movement in a semiquantitative sense. We are reporting our results at this time in the hope of stimulating interest and further study in this important aspect of fracturing. LABORATORY EXPERIMENTS Fig. 1 is a schematic diagram of equipment used in this study. A segment of a vertical crack 0.25-in. wide was formed between two Plexiglas plates, and movement of sand in fluid through the crack was observed under various conditions. Sand and fluid were injected into the crack at constant rates. The top and bottom of the crack were closed so that the fluid flowed horizontally. Because of gravity most of the sand settled to the bottom before moving very far through the crack. If the fluid velocity exceeded a certain critical value, then all the sand injected was washed on through the crack even though it had settled to the bottom. When the fluid velocity was less than this value when sand injection was started, most of the sand which settled in the crack remained in place until enough of the area open to fluid flow was blocked by the settled sand to increase the fluid velocity to the critical value.. At this point all injected sand moved on through the crack even though it settled to the lower portion of the moving fluid section. All sand previously settled remained in place. When fluid velocity was increased at this paint by increasing fluid injection rate (without also increasing sand injection rate), some of the previously settled sand was washed out until enough area was open to flow that the velocity dropped to the critical value. Conversely, when the fluid velocity was decreased by decreasing the fluid injection rate (without changing the rate of sand injection), additional sand would settle until the critical velocity was again attained. In short, the critical velocity is an equilibrium value which the system will automatically seek, if possible. The equilibrium (or critical) velocity was measured under several conditions. The results of these measurements are shown in Pig. 2 where the equilibrium velocity is shown as a function of the amount of sand injected per minute. The points falling in the shaded band shown in Fig. 2 were obtained with water. The higher viscosities were obtained by adding CMC (carboxymethylcellu-lose). Data indicate that the equilibrium velocity is not very sensitive to sand size or transport fluid viscosity, or to sand injection rate (except at very low rates). Points connected by the solid CUrve in Fig. 2 were obtained with water and 20- to 40-mesh steel shot. The equilibrium velocity is apparently fairly sensitive to difference in density between particle and fluid. Only one run was made with a gelled fluid and that was gelled water at zero sand injection rate as shown in Fig. 2. "Cash flow modelling during project evaluation is enhanced when probabilistic methods are applied to the inputs. One of the important inputs is the quarterly production profile. Typically, the steady-state production profile provided to project evaluation practitioners is deterministic, with each quarter the same as every other quarter. This is unrealistic as actual production profiles from existing mines exhibit a range or quarter-on-quarter variance. Monte Carlo stochastic simulation of the production profile can be used to provide a range of possible outcomes, but how are these ranges selected? This paper describes the use of quarterly production variance from a large database of mines worldwide as a benchmark to inform the appropriate selection of ranges. The coefficient of variation is used to rank the production from mines, with quartile analysis applied to indicate industry best, median and worst variation. Due diligence of existing mines and evaluation of future production performance can be quantitatively assessed using this approach. Control and mitigation of building response to construction activities are assuming a greater role in design decisions for underground construction. Alternatives for controlling building response have multiplied with the continued development of ground modification methods, better control of construction activities that cause ground movements, and increased understanding of building behavior and response. This paper describes approaches to estimating building response to construction-related ground displacements caused by adjacent excavation and highlights the discussion with several case history examples. Examples discussed includes experiences with two, seven-story historic structures, supported by timber piles with granite block pile caps, which were underpinned in preparation for ground-freezing ground stabilization and tunnel construction beneath the buildings. The elevation of each building column was monitored and elevation adjustments were actively performed during construction. The second example examines the performance of a slurry wall braced cut, 45 to 50 feet deep penetrating through a stiff crust into a soft clay layer and associated building response. This cut was immediately adjacent to two, approximately 15-story office buildings, which were supported by deep foundations founded in the stiff crust.

PURPOSE OF THE PROJECT The Big Walnut Augmentation Rickenbacker Interceptor project began in 1995with the preparation of the Scope of Services for the design of the Rickenbacker Interceptor, with service to and around the Rickenbacker Air Force base. The air base was soon to be placed under civilian control through a Port Authority, with an expected influx of businesses and services, requiring increased sanitary service capability. Due to political differences regarding annexation and other issues, the project was placed on hold. In mid 1996 the Scope of Services was rewritten with more emphasis on a tunneling option, but still only addressing the air base and surrounding tributary are a sanitary service requirements. The consultant selection process began in late 1996 with the Request for Statements of Qualifications issued in December. Three firms were selected to furnish proposals based on the revised Scope of Services that now included requirements for hydraulic modeling of the service areas and the Big Walnut Outfall (BWO) and an expanded soil investigation requirement. All three firms were requested to make presentations to the selection committee, with the committee selecting URS Greiner for further consideration and negotiation. A contract was entered into in August of 1997with URS Greiner. The major sub-consultants were Lachel and Associates, Inc., H.R.Gray and Associates and Solar Testing Laboratories, Inc. The project began with geological investigations, preliminary soil borings, well investigations, tributary area evaluations, hydraulic modeling of the BWO system and research into other projects planned for the Rickenbacker airport and surrounding area. The hydraulic modeling of the BWO and the proposed Rickenbacker Interceptor confirmed that the BWO suffered wet weather surcharging and would require augmentation to properly convey the future flows to the Southerly Wastewater Treatment Plant(SWWTP). The project scope expanded to include evaluation of both the Rickenbacker Interceptor and the Big Walnut Augmentation projects. Both projects previously identified in the Capital Improvements Program. The work on the expanded scope for the Big Walnut Augmentation and the Rickenbacker Interceptor began with the evaluation of a parallel 2.75 meter (108") diameter augmentation sewer from SWWTP to S.R. 317and Parsons Avenue, then continuing east along S.R. 317 as the Rickenbacker Interceptor. Within the mining industry there is a growing trend of placing inexperienced technical people into positions of responsibility beyond their readiness. Their responsibilities often include providing the fundamental basis for decision-making: the resource model or even the daily grade control estimates. Whilst software continues to make the processes more accessible, the thinking and rationale for selecting parameters still requires control rather than auto-piloting. Operators run these systems in virtual isolation, and have limited immediate access to experts. Beyond the stress of the professional burden are the increased risks to the mining operations and overall project success.While many experienced experts recall being thrown in the deep end, the relative isolation from experts coupled with the gravity of professional burden before readiness, is less familiar. Many recall in intimate detail the experts who gave them direction, assisted them along the way and even helped them claw out of inadvertent mistakes. Experienced professionals all have a responsibility to enable capability across the generations, to ease the burden and to mitigate the risks.This paper provides an outline of how mentoring as an on-the-job professional development process can be structured to more fully enable success of a mentoring program.
